FALL 2005

Upcoming Events

The annual FFA fair will be held this year on October 7 and 8 at the Stissing Mountain Middle/High School. This year, our exhibit will be comprised of artifacts found during the initial archaeological work and subsequent renovation currently underway at the Graham Brush House. We encourage everyone to stop by and say hello.

The Society is in the beginning stages of planning some sort of celebration for the tercentennial of the Little Nine Partners Patent in the spring of 2006. Since the patent was comprised of territory encompassing the current towns of Milan, Pine Plains, and Northeast when it was granted in 1706, it was felt that any celebration should be a joint venture with all three towns.

Membership

Jim and Pat Murphy have been made Life Members of the Society as our way of saying “thank you” for their donation of some wonderful old records books (see below).

Please remit your annual membership dues at this time if you have not already done so.

Recent Events

Taking advantage of the number of people in town for the parade on Memorial Day, we opened the Graham Brush house to tours. The turnout was good and demonstrates how the house’s close proximity to the activities in the town center will be beneficial to the Society, as well as to the town.

Our $100 scholarship to a graduating senior was awarded this year to Michael C. Bachelet, who is continuing his education at SUNY Buffalo. The Society needs to think of ways of increasing the number of applicants, whether it might be through raising the dollar amount of the scholarship or getting the applications into the guidance office earlier, or a combination of the two. But, the number of applicants for this scholarship has been steadily decreasing every year since we started it.

Our Web Site

We get a lot or requests through our web site. If you are interested in helping with research, genealogical or otherwise, please contact Dyan Wapnick (398-5822).

Graham-Brush House

Now that the roof is done, the next tasks will be to remove the small addition on the back of the house and put in a poured foundation basement, also in back, that will be for our heat, water, and electric supply. The water and electric lines would follow our right of way from East Church Street around to the back of the house. The intent is that this will allow us to have a facility that can be open year-round, something we did not have with the Harris Husted House, while keeping the original historic portion of the house, with the original basement, intact and undisturbed.

Other

Great Discovery for the LNPHS - Jim & Patricia Murphy have donated to our society, and in our role as Town Historian we have accepted, four volumes of old records dating from 1772-1940. These books had been stored in an old barn for many years and amazingly are still in pretty good condition. The first volume contains records of Northeast Precinct of the Little Nine Partners from 1772 until the formation of the Town of Pine Plains in 1823.  We are looking into various ways of preserving and/or making copies of these very interesting documents.  Anyone who has any expertise in preserving historical documents, please contact us.

Donation of Tree – An American chestnut tree has been donated to the Society in memory of Jay Wilmarth by the Dutchess Environmental Management Council. It was decided that an appropriate place to plant the tree would be on the west side of the Graham Brush house.
