I would appreciate any information about the family of my great-great-grandfather Jacob Ebblie ( 3-2-1812-----4-25-1885). We will soon be visiting Lowville & other nearby communities, will see the graves in Ebbley Cemetery, and look for records. Where should we inquire for marriage record of Alvin Morris Ebbley and Marcella Comstock (married 11-10-1845)? Are there descendents of Jacob Ebblie in Lowville? (We will be visiting a great granddaughter in Evans Mills.)

Thank you for any information.

Seeking information about the Michael Kelley family. Michael was born approximately 1814 in Ireland, was married to a woman named Mary, also born approx 1814. They had a son, Patrick, while still living in Ireland, possible in 1840. Their next child, my 2nd great grandmother, Mary A. was born in 1844/45 in Croghan.

The next record I have of this family is the 1860 census and they are living in Manheim, Herkimer County. Here Mary met and married James Costello. They eventually settled in Amsterdam, NY, after a brief stay in Camden, Oneida County.

Michael and his wife returned to Lewis County at some point, where they are listed in the 1880 Census in Belfort. Sons Thomas (age 23) and Robert (age 16) along with daughter Lizzie (19) are living with them. Michael and Mary are buried in St.Vincent de Paul Cemetery. Michael's father's name may have been Patrick.

Any information about when this family came to America, where they lived in Ireland, or where they were between 1845 and 1860 is appreciated. I am happy to share any other information I have.

The founder of our university – Edward Payson Hart was born in Middlesex, VT in 1835. His parents are Moses Lester Hart and Emeline Mobra (Stowell) Hart. I have had decent success tracking Emeline’s line back through a STONE family.

But NO luck with Moses Lester Hart. Here is what I have:

He is in McHenry, IL 1860 census
He is Burlington, VT - 1850 Census
Hyde Park, VT - 1840 Census

His son, Edward Payson Hart was born in Middlesex VT in 1835, so I am ASSUMING they Lived in Middlesex, VT in 1835… after that nothing.

I have two leads:

Nathanial Hart – from Hyde Park, VT
Samuel Hart – from Stowe, Vermont….

In the 1830 census there is a STEPHEN HART and a Nathaniel Hart living next to each other in Turin, Lewis County, NY. Both men are 60-70…. Stephen has a son 20-30. Nathaniel has a son 30-40.

Trying to find out if any of these NEW YORK men are ML Hart’s dad, and if so, to keep tracking backwards in the genealogy in New York….

Any leads or assistance is greatly appreciated….

Colonel John Spafford b 1752 Salisbury Litchfield Connecticut died in Lowville Lewis Co New York 24 May[?] 1823 and is recorded buried in Spaffords Landing Cemetery Beaches Bridge Lowville. He is recorded in 1810 Census in Lowville but not in 1820. His wife returned to Tinmouth Vermont after his death, where they had settled previously lived, and died there 9 Sept 1842. I am related to their daughter Sophia born 1791 who married a Richard Williams. Can find no record of her or Richard after 1807. Did she live in Lowville too? Her sister Hannah married a Reverend Royal Phelps and she died in Lowville in 1831 and is buried with father in Spafford's Landing Cemetery. Only these two Spafford's are recorded as buried in this cemetery. Did any of these families stay in Lewis County? The Frederick Martin family owned the land the cemetery is located on in 1965 when the cemetery transcription was carried out. Does anyone know where the cemetery is actually located so that I might visit?

My brick wall is William Washburn, b 1803 VT (have him on 1850 census, Van Buren Co MI and gravestone 1859) m Electa Morgan b abt 1810 NY. Cannot find any other info or reseachers for this family. Especially need their parents. Don't know that Washburns were from NY but since he married a NY woman, trying that line of research. Am currently looking at all NY county census for Washburns and Morgans. Stone is another family I need with nothing to go on. William Stone b NY 1815, emigrated to Ashtabula Co OH and he, spouse Betsy and sons to Van Buren Co MI . 1870 census. Have a land transaction for Wm Stone 1839 in Van Buren Co but son born in Ashtabula Co OH in 1850s. So either is not correct Wm Stone or he returned to Ohio. He married Betsy Waters (I think - may have been Savage). 1870 census Van Buren Co MI son Solomon was born NY. Son S. Jerome born OH. I am trying to identify a possible link between Content Leeds HALL and Jonathan HALL, who is listed in the 1810-1840 federal census in Leyden, Lewis County, New York. Jonathan is listed as Content's father on her death record, other records point to her father being Nathaniel Hall.

Content was born in 1792, reportly in Leyden, Massachusetts. She married Caleb OLMSTEAD in 1812 also in Leyden, Mass., but it's possible that these could have been in Leyden, New York instead. The Hall name does not appear in Leyden, Massachusetts. In addition, one of Content's children carries the name HUBBARD, and there seems to be a number of Hubbards in Leyden, New York.

My grandmother was born Helen M. Tulley in Lowville, NY in 1894. Her father's name was James Tulley (sometimes spelled "Tully"). They later moved to Malone, NY and I have been able to find them in the 1900 Malone census. Recently, I did a search on an online NY State library website for "Tulley", and a record from Lowville, NY, 1895 appeared - a bankruptcy notice of the "Tulley Store". I know that James did go bankrupt, and that he later owned a store in Malone.

Does anyone know anything (owner, location, photos, history) of the Tulley Store in Lowville, NY, circa 1895?

I saw the Ziegler surname in your site. I'd like to know if it has some relationship with a man called Franz Ziegler (I'm not really sure about the name). He was my great grandfather, and lived in USA. He had a sugar mill there, and I'd like to know more about the people related in the site for this reason. Maybe we are lost parents. My correctly surname is not Sigler, it was to be Ziegler, but when my parents moved to Brasil my grandmother didn't know to write or read and in the documents (I don't know much about it) it was turned to Sigler.

Please, could you tell me more about it? Could you tell me more about all you Ziegler history?

Really thanks,

I am trying to find the cemetery where my great grandfather is buried. He was born in Jefferson County, but toward the end of the 19th century, he moved to Lewis County. Family tradition indicates that he lived near Port Leyden. Military records confirm Port Leyden as his place of residence. He died on January 23, 1896 and his death certificate is signed by Doctor Wm H. Johnston of Port Leyden. The death certificate indicates his burial to be in Port Leyden and the undertaker is listed as DM Coe or Cue. The death certificate is registered in the town of Lyonsdale of Lewis County, New York.

If it is helpful. He was a Catholic. That might narrow the search down. I don't know if you have more than one Catholic cemetery in Port Leyden or not. But if there is only one, chances are he is buried there. The reason I would like to find the cemetery is so I can place a stone marker in his honor. He served honorably as a member of the 20th New York Calvary (Company E) during the Civil War. In fact, his death was caused by complications generated by an injury received in the line of duty just weeks before his discharge from the U. S. Army. He has been a great inspiration to me and my son, who recently served in our most recent war (Operation Iraqi Freedom).

This man is my great grandfather and His wife was impoverished by doctor bills and funeral expenses. For that reason she was not able to place a marker on his grave. Now after 108 years of lying in an unmarked grave, I think it is time for our nation to pay respects to him. I plan to make that a reality. Your help in locating the cemetery will be greatly appreciated. Once I know what cemetery he is buried in, I will need to figure out some way of locating his grave. If I can't do that, perhaps there is some procedure for placing a marker somewhere in the cemetery near where he is buried. I am attaching the James Murray's death certificate to this email. I am also attaching a photo. The photo might not be any help in the task at hand, but perhaps it is of some interest to the people in Lewis County.

Thanks for your help.

Would this son have been born in a hospital?

If so where would the hospital be and what is the name of it?

What paper would a birth announcement go to?

How would I find a marriage certificate if I don't know the date or town the person was married in or even the year.

I appreciate any thoughts and always loads of help.

Thanks

I am looking for information on Dorothea Reed. Her maiden name was Dorothea Sutz and she was married to John Reed.

Dorothea was born 6 Apr 1969 and moved to Lewis County in 1806 from Palatine, Stone Arabia, Montgomery Co. NY with her husband John Reed who was born in 1762 and died in 1837. His research that my uncle did says that on his tombstone he was born in 1763 a revolutionary soldier and was buried with his wife Polly born in 1767 died in 1834. John and Dorothea's last child was born in 1810 but the 1810 census shows that there was no female anywhere near his age. By the 1820 census there was a female his age. I would like to know any information on when and where Dorothea Reed died/buried. Also would like to know when John Reed married Polly (also a maiden name would be helpful). John and Dorothea had the following children.

William born Dec 6, 1789
Peter born Mar 6, 1791
George born Jan 22, 1793
Polly born Sep 19, 1794
Hannah "Anna" born Oct 4, 1796

Jacob born Aug 10, 1806
Dorothea "Dolly" born May 15, 1808 (Lewis Co)

According to the 1850 census Porter was living with his parents in Diana, Lewis, NY., therefore I suspect that Porter and Clara may have been married in Lewis County. My great-grandfather was Herman Petzoldt who is buried in Beaver Falls Old Cemetary with dates that say 1856 - 1894.

I have been looking for his birthplace, and parentage for many months, and have turned up only dates. He had brothers, Amos, Joseph, Edward and William and they do not turn up on census data as yet. He died in Little Falls, New York in 1894 ( why there is a mystery ) when his wife Hannah Haller and my grandmother Bertha Petzoldt were then living in Watertown, New York.

What do you suggest for my next avenue of research?? I have written to the Lewis County Historical Society, and spoken with them on the phone. They are backed up with moving into a new building etc. but hopefully, they will get to my request.

Hoping you can help me -- thank you so much.

I am working on my mothers side of our geneology and am not finding any relatives or sites with there names except two cemetaries where some of them are buried. I have marriage and birthdates on several of them. They are located in St. Stephen's in Croghan, NY and St. Michael's in Mohawk Hill.

St. Michaels, Mohawk Hill cemetery reports Theresa Scharbach as Theresa on one website and Theresia on your website. I believe it is actually Theresa but would like confirmation. Her maiden name I believe was Heldt. She was my Gr-Gr-grandmother. Mary A. Scharbach is her daughter and my Gr-grandmother.

I have birthdates and marriage dates on some of these people.

St. Stephen's cemetery in Croghan are a lot of my Louis family kin. Great and Gr-Gr grandparents and aunts and uncles and their wives. I also have marriage and birthdates and some children of these people. Have you had any other inquiries on any of them. Also Mary Louis L'Huillier is part of the Louis family. She would be my gr aunt.

If you can help or are interested in the information I have for dates and people and who they married, please let me know.

My mother was born near Constableville to Herman F. Bush and Philomena Louis and there were 15 children so I am sure there are a lot of relatives out there.

My husband has been working on genealogy and we found a website that has a picture of "A Kilborn Family Plot in Copenhagen, town of Denmark, Lewis County, New York, a town bordering Jefferson County wher many Kilborns settled. The inscription on the top of the stone reads:

This portal is an adaptation of the entrance to Wood Ditton Church Kilburn Del England erected about 1000 years ago. Thomas Kilborne senior warden of this church settled in Connecticut with his family in 1635 and the following year whilst attemtping to rescue captives was killed by Indians."

My husband has traced his family tree back to Thomas Kilborne's great, great, great, great, great (I think I have that right) grandfather, Richard Kylburn born in 1434 in England.

We would be interested in seeing this "Kilborn Family Plot in Copenhagen". Would you be able to tell us where or what cemetery it might be in?

I checked your list of Lewis Co.,but didn't find anything helpful to help me with my ancestor William Wallace Nash, my gggrandfather and his wife Louisa. I contacted Jefferson Co., but didn't get much from them, either. I do have his death certificate which lists as his birth place Pillar Point which was in 1830 (approx.) I guess, as I can't find him in the census of N.Y. for that year. He died in Brownville in 1905, and I located his tombstone in a small cemetery in Pillar Point when I was back there briefly 3 years ago for my SUNY-Potsdam reunion. I don't have access to the N.Y. 1900 census which would show his where-abouts, spouse's maiden name, 2 male off spring's names and possibly his parents' names for sure. The D.C. lists them as a John Nash born in Vt.in 1800 who married in Town of Wilna, Jefferson Co., a Harriet Hawley Nash. Can't find an obit anywhere for either person. At one time there was a Wallace Nash living in Natural Bridge, N,Y., Town of Diana which may be in Lewis Co.

Is ellisburg in Lewis Co.? I have a Jacob Nash there in his later years. He was father of James and was a Minute Man in the Rev. War.

Any suggestions or help about these early ancestors of mine would be appreciated.

My late husband had a grgr grandfather, Joel Hiscock, who died in Harrisville in July 1877, at the home of his daughter, Mary Jane (& Charles) Blood. I would like to find out if he is buried there somewhere in the Town of Diana. I have found that he is not buried in the Harrisville Cemetery. Joel had previously lived in Fine, NY, but he does not seem to be buried in any of the Town of Fine Cemeteries. He had made out his Will in Fine and it was finalized in the Village of Gouverneur. I would like to find out where he is buried, to possibly find out more about him from cemetery or death records for genealogy purposes. Although he is not in the Harrisville Cemetery there are several other Hiscock family members buried there, as are Charles & Mary J. Blood. I just found the location of their home on your 1875, I believe, map.

I understand that there are some cemetery records and/or obituaries there in the Harrisville Free Library. I wonder if there is anyone in that area who does "look-ups" for those living out of the area. Thank you for any help anyone can give.

Am looking for any information on 'John Lynts' family. Believe he was born approx. 1820-26. He married to Laura Elizabeth Rowley in 1848 in Elmira, NY.

They had three children: Helen Augusta Lynts born 1848 (West Leyden), William born approx. 1850 (West Leyden), George born 1857 (Rome, NY).

That's all I know except that John (Jr.) might have been in the Civil War. Can't find them in any of the Census reports but his War records has him enlisted in Elmira, NY. and mustering out in 1864.

I found a John Lynts, wife Margaret, daughter Mary in the 1850 Census but that's all. This is probably the parents because of the ages listed.

Is there anything anywhere about this man? He's my great-great-grandfather on my grandmother's side and I am trying to finish up our genealogy and print books for our family members and would dearly love to prove his existence.

I’m looking for information on a daughter of Levi Arthur and Sarah (Sally) Hovey Arthur. Census records for 1820 and 1830 show four daughters living with Levi, three of whom I have names for based on “History of Lewis County with Biographical Sketches” by Hough. (This source lists three daughters Jane Ann, Caroline, and Permelia who would be living in 1820 and 1830, and a daughter Melissa that died in 1815). That there is an unnamed daughter of Levi and Sally is also consistent with the 1840 census record, which shows three daughters (Caroline is supposed to have married before 1840).

Based on the census, this unnamed daughter would have to be born between 1815 and 1819. Given other sources of information I believe that her name was also Melissa and so would be the second Melissa born to this family – possibly as a twin with Alfred.

I’m also looking for marriage information for a Melissa Arthur to a Daniel Haight Ruttan (or Rutan, since there seems to be inconsistency in his spelling). The date of marriage is likely between the 1840 census date (say late 1840) and the end of 1844. Daniel Ruttan and family (Melissa, Levi A., Charles E., Daniel A., Matthew A., and Mary L. Note that the “A.” in each middle name is “Arthur”) appear in the 1860 Census for Martinsburg immediately after the entry for Orlando Arthur Jr. Melissa may or may not be related to Levi Arthur and Sally Hovey Arthur. I’m just trying to find her connection to the Martinsburg Arthur family if there is one.

The picture I have of Levi and Sally Hovey Arthur’s family is listed below. It is a compilation from different sources, some of which has not been validated: however, the names and birthdates for all but the unknown daughter derive from Hough. (Marriages for several also derive from Hough). There are a couple of opportunities for the birth of the fourth child in the 1815-1819 range, although again some age information I have on Melissa Ruttan suggests she might have been born in 1818, possibly making her a twin to Alfred (or perhaps Alfred was born prematurely?)

Jane Ann Arthur – b. 16 Feb 1807 d. ?
m. 17 Jan 1850 to Samuel Lanpher
Orlando Arthur – b. 4 June 1809 d. ?
m. 16 Jan 1834 to Eliza Ann Mastan
Caroline Arthur – b. 10 Jan. 1812 d. ?
m. Apr 1838 to Luther Barnes b. ? d. ?
Melissa Arthur (1) – b. 11 June 1814 d. 7 Sep 1815 Martinsburg age 15m
Unknown daughter: Hypothesis is Melissa Arthur (2) – b. 1817 to 1819 d. 3 Apr 1890
m. ? (est 1840) to Daniel Haight Ruttan (Rutan) b. 1817 d 1897
Alfred Arthur – b. 16 Aug 1818 d. ?
m. 1 Mar 1843 to Betsey (Mary Elizabeth) Peebles
m. 13 Oct 1857 to Laura Stater
Permelia Arthur – b. 20 Aug 1820 d. 23 Dec 1896
m. 14 Dec 1843 Charles W. Peebles b. 18 May 1821 d. 14 Apr 1864

I could certainly use some help in finding information about George Scrafford and family. He is listed in the 1880 census as living in Lyonsdale, Lewis Co., being age 39 and a farmer. His wife, Delilah was 38 and they had two children at the time, George M. age 4, and Myra B. age 2. My interest in this family is through Delilah, whose maiden name was Mereness. I have found info that she married George Scrafford on 10/25/1866 and he was listed as being from Port Leyden, Lewis Co. Delilah was a sister to my Great-Grandmother Ellen Mereness Collins. All of the family (at least 13 of them are known) were born in the Sharon Springs area. I couldn't imagine how Delilah would come to meet George until I realized that Delilah's sister, Mary Mereness, married William D. Coe of Port Leyden. He is listed as the son of Dennis M. and Emma Seymour Coe. Any information on theses families would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your interest.

I need real proof of the ancestry of Hiram Burr. I am looking for any information that can be CONFIRMED beyond doubt, about the parent's of: Hiram Burr, who died April 15, 1813 somewhere in Lewis or Jefferson Co , while in the NY Militia-46th Reg-Coxe's Mititia, and left a wife, Catherine Van Scriver [who then married in 1814, Grinman Austin, who died in 1834 in Denmark, Lewis Co, NY]

Hiram left at least 6 children: Eunice,b. 1800- Polly, b. 1802- Isaiah Burr, b. March 9 or 11, 1805, -Abram, b. 1807- , Harris, b. 1809-, & Duma Burr, b. 1812. There is some evidence these children were living in Denmark, since Abram & Duma married Munger sisters in Denmark.

Catherine [Van Scriver] Austin died August 9, 1872 in Denmark, Lewis Co, NY--She may have re-married a third time.[no longer with Austin as a last name] An obit on this date might confirm this.

Hiram Burr had 2 brothers, also in the militia in Lewis Co, Isaiah Burr died Nov 6, 1812 in Ogdensburg, St Lawrence Co, NY and Joab Burr, died March 10, 1828 in Martinsburgh-Obit in the Black River Gazette on Mar 12, 1828.

We have extensive Pension papers, but nothing confirms the ancestry of these 3 men.

Just found my great uncle's border entry cards on Sat. and was wondering what type of work would be bringing him from Casselman, Ontario to Croghan, NY during the period of 1908 thru 1917? On some of the cards it says that he was a laborer and on one of them it says "bushman". Sometimes he was there for a month and other times several months. Thank you for anyone who might help.

I lived in Lewis Co. for a large part of my life. I am trying to find information about my great Grandfather, David Philips. He was married to Hannah Hooper, and had 2 or three children. David, William and Sarah, I believe. I have researched the cemeteries in the Town of Turin, where I believe they settled on what was known as Swackhammer Hill, near Houseville. Do you have any suggestions for where I can continue this search.

I'm looking for info on the marriage of my great-grandparents. My ggrandmother, Grace Ingalls was born in Hartwick, NY in 1870 and married Jay Edwards some time in the 1890's (my grandfather was born in 1900 in Chicago). I'm assuming the marriage was in her hometown. Do you know if there are any marriage records for Otsego County in the 1890's anywhere. I'm at a loss and could use some big help. Do you know where I might inquire about such records?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I am interested in obtaining any available information on August and Josephine KEMP, listed in the 1860 Federal Census as living in West Turin, Lewis, NY. One son Edward, age 7, was listed. Birthplace for parents and son is listed as France. August's occupation was listed as butcher.

I have a typwritten page (looks like a draft copy for a news article) of family history on an Augustus KEMPF, married to E.L. MULLER, including the following information:
Leon Muller was Augustus' father-in-law.
Leon Muller, his father, two sisters and brothers-in-law came to Croghan from Alsace-Lorraine in 1855.
Augustus Kempf ran a grist mill in Croghan in 1855.
Augustus Kempf was the proprieter of a West Leyden Hotel in 1859.
Leon Muller was prominent in Boonville in the 1870's and 1880's.

On a Chicago IL death certificate for Edward Leo Kempf, birth is given as 27 March 1853 Rome, NY . Parents are listed as August and Josephine Kempf. (I am currently corresponding with Rome NY Historical Society to try to find record of birth for Edward Leo Kempf.)

My hope is to show that August and Josephine (Miller) Kemp from the census, and Augustus and E.L. (Muller) Kempf, from the family pages, are the same couple.

Is there anyone who can offer help here? Thank you.

I have been on the trail of my GGGG. Grandfather Elias Sage who was born in 1759 in Middletown CT. the son of Samuel-- going back to David Sage 1639 to Middletown 1652. We have found through the Revolutionary War Pension Records that he was Married in Denmark Lewis County in 1785 to a Elizabeth Chamberlin but in studying over these hand written personal testimonies from a judge and or Justice of the peace verifying that she was the widow of Elias Sage sr. who died in 1852, there are some grave discrepancies in dates etc. Their family consisted of 12 Children, including my GGG Grandfather Martin Sage b. 1784, and there is a census, I think the 1820, that shows him in Denmark, Lewis County. his son Lawrence, the next one in our line, was born in Champion in Jefferson County in 1810. Where we don't know but there may be a Baptism record available if we knew where to look.

There was an article in the Watertown Daily Times in Sept. 1951 showing a picture of a house built by the Elias Sage (jr.) who was a younger brother of our Martin Sage. The text on this article explained that Elias sr. who was from Sandisfield Massachusetts was removed to Lewis County in 1800 and there son Elias jr. attended district school there (somewhere in Lewis County ? -- it doesn't say where) and when he was 15 he was removed to South Champion and became an excellent carpenter and was chosen to help Deacon Granger build the LeRay mansion.

We are wondering if Elizabeth is the second wife for it appears that they had nine of their twelve children by the year 1800 and the other three in 1804, 1806 and 1809. We can't seem to find any documentation as to where Elias Sage sr. and Elizabeth got married and exactly when. Also, the same problem for Martin Sage who married Mary Jewett -- Pat James lists a Jewett Corners in her Jefferson County book (page 35) at LeRay now known as Sanford Corners, also page #132 shows the name Jewett in the section regarding Old Houses of The North Country as published in the Watertown Daily News and available at the Flower Memorial Library. This is where I found the good info on the Sage House.. I wonder if it is still standing? It ended up in the ownership of Seymour A. Woolworth who married Martha J. Sage daughter of Col. Elias Sage jr.(There is a connection to the F. W. Woolworth family here somewhere).

If you can help us find any answers or direct us to some one who can-- on the above we sure would appreciate it.

I have been looking for the parents and information on the ancestry of Carrie Klock. She was born in 1866, died in 1918 and is buried in the Carthage, NY cemetery. She was married to George Birchenough. In the 1900 census she was living with her husband and four children in Lewis County (I think in Montague) . Some time after that her husband left for Billings Montana and didn't return. I have looked for her obituary in Carthage and death record in Carthage, Pinkney and NY vital records to no avail. Any information would be appreciated

I am seeking information about an Alpheus White (Parents were Josiah and Rebecca (Simonds) White who came from Charlemont, Mass.) who was born in April 1788 in Mass. and moved with his parents to Jefferson and Lewis Counties, N.Y. Alpheus married Nancy Williams from Connecticut. Our family notes indicate that they had five children born in Lewis County: Alpheus Williams White,b 1815, James Henry White, b. 1817, James Everlyn White, b. 1823, Josiah White, b. 1823, and Rebecca, b. 1825. However, I cannot find any official record of the births of these children. Do you have any help? I have written to all the town clerks in Lewis County but their records do not go back beyond 1888. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you,

Governieur Morris Perkins enlisted Sept. 8, 1861 in Omro, WI, in Co. "C", 14th Wisconsin Infantry and was wounded at the battle for Cornith and was discharged with disability on Dec. 19, 1862.
