The census of the residents of the Lewis County Poor House, located in the Town of Lowville, was filed July 17, 1860. The keeper of the poor house was Warren White, who resided in the same building as the poor house. At the time of the reading there were 39 residents, of which 8 were children aged 11 and under, 14 were aged 60 and over (about 36%), 5 adults were classified as "insane," 3 adults were classified as "idiotic," and 1 was "blind." A total of 17 claimed foreign birth (close to 44%) and 5 (about 13%) claimed birth in New England. 18 residents were female, 21 male. The turnaround of the population since the 1850 poor house census was almost total, although four female residents were still in residence. Few 1860 residents would have been able to contribute much to the economic self-sufficiency of the poor house.
This is a literal transcription, letter for letter. Where I couldn't discern a name, or it made no sense, I've noted so with a "?". Poor house records are an often underutilized or unknown resource when looking for aged parents or children who are missing from a family group, or siblings who have "disappeared."
