History of our Auxiliary No. 56

Our Auxiliary was begun on August 19, 1999 at the SUVCW Haskell-Marston Camp #56 annual ice cream social that was held at the Community House on Cousins Island in Yarmouth. There were seven women who attended and while the men held their meeting, we met on the porch to review the Auxiliary membership information packet that we had received from the Auxiliary National Recruiter. After determining that all seven of us were eligible to join as members of the Auxiliary, either by having a civil Civil War Union Soldier ancestor or as a wife of an SUVCW member and being of age (though Syndi Holmes did note that we just barely passed the twelve years of age minimum. We volunteered to take on some of the officer roles and prepared a list of possible members that we were going contact. We announced to the members of the SUVCW Camp #56 that we were in the process of forming an Auxiliary. The SUVCW members were asked to sponsor us help us with the recruitment of members so that we could meet the minimum required for a Charter, and that our first event was to hold a joint meeting and potluck supper at the Community House on October 21, 1999.
