Durham July 12, 1847 (Monday)

Dear Brother
We arrived here safely thursday AM and found mother more comfortable than we anticipated. I expected to have set out for home this morning, but on mentioning my design to mother found she prefered I should wait a day or two in order to effect  a settlement of matters pertaining to her business which Mr. Baldwin & myself had judged not expedient to say any thing to her about considering the feeble State of her health. But as she has mentioned it, and feels desirous of having the business attended to now, we all feel as though I had better remain.

We met with Mr. Sayer & wife on the Steam Boat at NY and came in company with them here. Mr. Sayre met his carriage here (which was left him by Mr. Mulford of Mt. Rose) and designs to set out on Wednesday for home.

I think I shall accompany him and shall probably get home on Saturday - though this is some what uncertain. At any rate I shall get homeward as fast as I conveniently can.

My health is much better then when I left home. - The rest of our company are well.
