Record of Baptisms

Frederick, and Leonard, infant children of Henry Peck, were baptised Sept. 21^st 1851.

The committee appointed by the Northern associated presbytery at their session at Windham in September last to form a Church of Christ in Big Hollow, met for that purpose Dec 10.th A. D. 1822.

Present, minesters, Rev. Seth Williston & Rev. James Jewel. Delegates Deac. Benjamin Hubbard from 2d Church Durham & Deacon David Baldwin from 1^st Church Do. Rev. David Harrower being present was invited to take his seat and set with the committee—Reverend Seth Williston was chosen chairman & Dea. David Baldwin Clerk of the committee. The meeting was opened with prayer by the Chairman and the object of the meeting stated to the people, Letters of recommendation from those Churches to which the members who had made application belonged were then read. The committee then proceeded to examine the several members in regard to their Christian experience and practice and their views of the doctrines of the scriptures, And at half past nine OC, P. M. adjourned to meet again at the school house on the morrow at eight O.C. A. M. Meeting closed with prayer.

Dec. 11^th Met agreeable to adjournment and opened with prayer Resumed the examination of the members whose letters were read and finished the same Eli P. Robinson and Abigail Chapman offered themselves for examination with a view to making a public profession of religion & were examined accordingly. The committee after conferring together unanimously approved of all the candidates examined as suitable persons to be formed into a church.

The people proposing to be formed into—a church were then seperately asked if they could receive each other as brethren and –sisters in the Lord and covenant to walk together as such in all the ordinances and institutions of the Gospel and they all replied that they could do it without excepting any one. After a recess of one hour met at two oclock P. M. for the purpose of attending public worship and forming them into a church. The Rev. David Harrower preached a sermon on the occasion from Psalms 133d 1^st Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity. A prayer was then offered adapted to the occasion and the following persons professed their belief in the articles of faith recommended by the Presbytery and took the vows of the covenant upon themselves-Viz.

They were then declared to be a Church of Christ, and as such having a right to the special ordinances of the Gospel and under obligation to maintain discipline in the Church agreeable to the direction of Gods word. The Church then elected Lemuel Hitchcock Deacon and Lemuel Hitchcock Jun. Clerk and Rev. David Harrower as Ministerial moderator of the Church till the session of the Presbytery in June next. The Church resolved that this Church be denominated the second Congregational Church of Windham.

Baptisms Dec. 11^th 1822 Eli P. Robinson adult and Susannah Bagley infant Dec. 25^th 1822. Met agreeable to appointment and examined three persons.

Dec. 29^th 1822- Admitted to the Church by letters Isaac Pain, Eli Pain, Theron Hough, Phebe Hitchcock & Emily Chapman. Harriet Chapman infant baptized Dec 29^th 1822, John Newton Evans infant was baptized July 2, 1823, Mrs. Selina Payne received into the church by letter Sept. 15^th 1823. Mary Elizabeth Bagley, infant was baptized May 9^th 1824. Parson Fisk Hitchcock infant was baptized July 4^th 1824.

Asa Law having been previously examined and propounded was admitted to communion with the Church July 4^th 1824. Sarah Brunson Atwater infant was baptized August 29^th 1824. Isaac Newton Payne infant baptized March 13^th 1825. Henry Martin Evans infant baptized March 13^th 1825.

Rhoena Hitchcock died May 7^th 1825

Henry Martin Evans died Sept. 26^th 1825 aged one year twenty two days.

Eliza Ann Hitchcock died Dec. 23d 1825.

Confession of Eli Payne 1824. I now confess with shame and blushing that I stole the money from Mr. Lynes and have said that which was false respecting it, for which if I know my own feelings on sincerely sorry knowing that I have done great injury to the cause of religion and likewise deeply wounded the feelings of the brethren of the Church I therefore humbly ask their forgiveness hoping that they will be earnest at the throne of grace that I may be forgiven of him whom I have most offended. I would also wish to be forgiven by the congregation at large and hope none of them will take occasion by my misconduct to speak reproachfully of religion for notwithstanding my past errors I still believe there is reality in religion without which no man can ever expect happiness in this life or that which is to come. I feel that the crime is offensive to God and rendered more so by denying it. I do view with deep regret my unchristian walk for months past and consider neglect of duty and deviation from the commands of God as the leading steps to this great wickedness, I acknowledge I have not felt the reverence for the holy sabbath which I ought to have felt. Laura Candace Bagley infant was baptized May 28^th 1826.

Being informed by a letter from the Clerk of the Columbia presbytery of our reception in to their body according to our request we therefore commence our records from that date September 27^th 1826 2d Church Windham.

Elder Harry R. Avery Presented a certificate form the Church of Hunter, and after being examined by the Rev. Mr. Harrower and the Church was received Oct. 29^th 1826.

The Presbytery appointed the Reverend Daniel Beers to officiate in organizing the Church he accordingly appeared on the first Sabbath in Nov. 1826. The Church presented to him a nomination for Elders Viz. Lemuel Hitchcock, Harry R. Avery, Lemuel Hitchcock Jun., Samuel Bagley & Zalmon Hitchcock, these being previously appointed by the Church were accordingly ordained No., 5^th 1826.

Dec.15^th 1826 session met according to agreement present Deac. Lemuel Hitchcock, Harry R. Avery, Lemuel Hitchcock, Samuel Bagley, Zalmon Hitchcock. Meeting opened by prayer adjourned for one week closed with prayer.

Dec. 19^th 1826 session met according to adjournment present Deac. Lemuel Hitchcock, Harry E. Avery, Lemuel Hitchcock Jun., Samuel Bagley, Zalmon Hitchcock opened with prayer appointed a committee to visit every member of this Church to enquire in to the state of their minds relative to choir religious exercises and other duties closed with prayer.

April 4^th 1827 session met present Dec. Lemuel Hitchcock, Harry R. Avery, Lemuel Hitchcock, Samuel Bagley, Zalmon Hitchcock, opened with prayer appointed Lemuel Hitchcock Jun. to attend the presbytery at Catskill closed with prayer.

June 17^th 1827 Session met all present opened with prayer appointed Harry R. Avery a delegate to attend presbytery at Hunter close with prayer.

Deacon Lemuel Hitchcock died June the twenty fifth in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty seven in the seventy eighth year of his age.

January 27^th 1828 session met all present opened with prayer appointed a committee to enquire into the case of Eli P. Robinson relative to reports of unchristian conduct closed with prayer.

February 11^th 1828 session met present Harry R. Avery, Lemuel Hitchcock, Samuel Bagley, Zalmon Hitchcock. Opened with prayer committee report they have gained their brother Mr. Robinson being present voluntarily confessed all that the reports imply session unanimously accepted of the confession by consent that it should be made public voted to give him and his wife a letter of recommendation to the first Church Windham. Closed with prayer.

At session meeting Dec. 6^th 1828 present Mr. Samuel Schafer, Harry R. Avery, Lemuel Hitchcock, Samuel Bagley, Zalmon Hitchcock opened with prayer attended to the examination of three person Viz. Amelia the wife of Theron Hough and Mary the wife of Henry Tuttle and Sabrina H. Root they were approved of as proper subjects for admission to the church. closed with prayer.

Sabbath Dec. 14^th 1828 Amelia Hough & Sabrina H. Root united with the church Rev. Mr. Goodrich officiates.

Dec. 25^th 1828 session met present Samuel Schaffer, Harry R. Avery, Lemuel Hitchcock, Samuel Bagley, Zalmon Hitchcock opened with prayer attended to the examination of two candidates Viz. Luther Ford & Benjamin Haight approved of their experience closed with prayer.

Sabbath March 15^th 1829 admitted to the Church Henry Tuttle & Mary his wife & Benjamin Haight. Mr. Haight received baptism & the children of Mr. & Mrs. Tuttle viz Julius Mary Bronson & Hannah Clark & George Phelps the son of John Chapman Rev. Mr. Durfey officiated.

April 8^th 1829 session met present Samuel Schaffer, Henry R. Avery, L. Hitchcock, S. Bagley, Z. Hitchcock opened with a prayer examined the following persons viz Samuel Avery, Juliaett the wife of John Chapman Sally Ann More Cleo More Elizabeth Bray Sarah Hitchcock Closed with prayer.

April 16^th 1829 session met present all the session opened with prayer the following person presented themselves for examination viz. Thomas Southard Jessey T. Chapman, Samuel Law, Nancy H. Root & Cynthia the wife of Asa Law. Closed with prayer.

July 5, 1829 The Session convened at the school house, and was opened with pray by the moderator. Present each of the Elders. John Chapman was examined with a view to being received into the church; on motion resolved that his examination be sustained Closed with prayer Att-Lemuel Hitchcock Clk

1829 – July 19 – The Sacrament of the Lord’s supper was administered to this church, by the Rev. M. Durfy of Hunter. Baptism was administered to Cloe More, S. Law – L. Hitchcock – Att. Clerk.

1829 – Sept. 2 The session convened at the dwelling house of Mr. Pain, and was opened by prayer from the moderator present each of the elders. On motion, resolved that letters of dismission and recommendation be granted to Ely Pain, Selina his wife. Closed with prayer. Att- L. Hitchcock, clk.

At a session meeting of the 2d Church Windham present all the elders opened with prayer. Resolved that we will not only abstain from all intoxicating liquors ourselves and from making selling or giving to any one whether visitor or workman except prescribed by a physician. But that we adopt it as a standing rule in the examination of candidates for membership that we will not admit them except they consent to adopt the same resolution.

1830 April 3 The session convened at the meeting house, and was opened by prayer from the Rev. Calvin Durfy who presided as moderator. Present each of the Elders. On motion resolved that Henry R. Avery be the delegate to represent this chh at the next meeting of the Presbytery to be held at Hudson April 20. As a ruling elder; and Samuel Bagley to be his alternate. Att. L. Hitchcock, Clerk.

1830 April 4. The sacrament of the Lord’s supper was administered to this Church by Rev. M. Durfy and the ordinance of baptism was administered to William Chester infant son of Barry R. and Sarah Avery also to Betsy infant daughter of Asa and Cyntha Law. Attest L. Hichcock Clk.

Sept. 19^th 1830 session convened at the house of Harry R. Avery, was opened by prayer from the moderator present H. R. Avery, L. Hitchcock, S. Bagley, on motion resolved that Lemuel Hitchcock be the delegate to represent this Chh, at the next meeting to be held at Windham 21^st Sept. 1830 as a ruling elder. Att. Lemuel Hitchcock Clk.

1830 Sept. 8^th session convened at the east schoolhouse opened with prayer present elders Harry R. Avery, Lemuel Hitchcock, Samuel Bagley Mr. Gardener presided agreed to invite the Rev. Mr. Johnson to assist us in making out a call to Mr. Alfred Gardener to settle over us as our pastor closed with prayer. L. Hitchcock, Clerk.

Sept. 13. 1830 the Reverend Mr. Johnson appeared preached a sermon on the occasion and then attended to taking votes of the society a very great majority gave in their votes and all in favor of settleing Mr. Gardener as our pastor. Att. L. Hitchcock Clerk.

Sept. 21^st 1830 presented the call to the Columbia presbytery then in session at Windham after some enquires and regulations the Presbytery agreed to adjourn to the meeting house in East Windham on the 23 day of Sept. 1830 The presbytery accordingly met at the place and time appointed by them and after attending to a sermon preached by Rev. Mr. Woodbridge proceeded to ordain & install Mr. Alfred Gardener over this Church. Att. Lemuel Hitchcock, Clk.

October 24^th 1830 session convened at the meeting house and was opened by prayer by the moderator present each of the elders on motion resolved that letters of dismission and recommendation be granted to Henry Tuttle and Mary his wife. Closed with prayer. Attest L. Hitchcock Clk.

October 31^st 1830 the ordinance of baptism was administered by Reverend Alfred Gardener to the following children viz. Roger Winters, Horace Newton, and Sidney L. the sons of Luther and Cynthia Ford. Also Asahel Morgan infant son of Theron & Amelia Hough and Emeline the infant daughter of Zalmon & Ann Hitchcock & Caroline infant daughter of Samuel & Laura Bagley also William & Gilbert the sons of Albert & Sally Ann Moor.

Nov. 20 1830 session convened at the meeting house and was opened with prayer by the moderator present each of the elders Alanson Saxton & Cyntha the wife of Luther Ford offered themselves for examination with a view to unite with the Chh the former was approved by a majority of the session the latter by all Closed with prayr. Nov. 7 1830 Alanson Saxton & Cyntha the wife of Luther Ford was admitted to the Chh and the ordinance of baptism was administered to Ruth & Emeline the daughters of Alanson and Orpha Saxton also the sacrament of the Lords Supper was administered by the Pastor Rev. Alfred Gardener at a meeting of the session held at the house of Jehial Winchell according to appointment.

Dec. 13^th 1830 Elders present Samuel Bagley Harry R. Avery Pastor present Alfred Gardner. Session was opened with prayer by the Moderator Mr. Jesse Barker, Mrs. Sally Henson Mrs. Winchel the wife of Jehiel Winchell and Mrs. Winchell the wife of Ephriam Winchell presented to the session letters of dismission & recommendation from the Church of Christ in Hunter with request to be received into the 2d Presbyterian Church of East Windham By a unanimous vote of the session they were received into the Church. January 2d 1831 the Lords Supper was administered by the Pastor

January 9^th 1831 the Sacrament of baptism was administered to Charlotte Fowler the infant daughter of Lemuel & Hannah Hitchcock.

At a meeting of session held at Mr. Freman Snows on East Kill March 2, 1831 Present elders Lemuel Hitchcock Harry R. Avery Samuel Bagley Zalmon Hitchcock Samuel Atwater Pastor, present, meeting opened with prayer by moderator.

March 2d 1831 Mr. Samuel Henson appeared before session and presented a letter of dismission and recommendation from the Chh of Christ in Hunter after being examined by the session was received into the Chh. Mr. Joel Peck and wife appeared before session with letters of dismission & recommendation from the Chh of Christ in Catskill, to the session they were accordingly examined and received, Meeting was closed with prayer. March 4^th 1831 Session convened in the meetinghouse present each of the elders opened with prayer by the moderator Catharin the wife of Erastus Peck presented a letter of dismission & recommendation from the 1^st Chh in Durham after being examined was received into the Church Closed with prayer. April 17 1831 Session convened and was opened with prayer by the moderator. Present all of the elders Harry R. Avery was appointed delegate to attend the meeting of Presbytery, to be held in Catskill and on the 19^th of April 1831 Closed with prayer. Lemuel Hitchcock Clk.

June 10^th 1831 Session convened at the house of Jehiel Winchell Hunter Elders present Lemuel Hitchcock Zalmon Hitchcock Samuel Bagley Samuel Atwater Harry R. Avery Absent Samuel Chapman. The meeting was opened with prayer. The following person were examined on experimental & doctrinal religion for admission into the Church. Harlum Baldwin and Sally his wife and son Lewis. Seth Peck Elizabeth Peck Kesiah Winchell Julia Wolcott. Ralf Coe appeared before Session with a letter from the Chh. of Lexington was examined & received with the above names. The Session was closed with prayer. Alfred Gardner Mod. Of Session L. Hitchcock Clk.

The above named persons were publicly received into the Church on the 1^st Sabbath in July. The Lords Supper was administered by the Pasture and the ordinance of baptism was administered to Sally, the wife of Harlum Baldwin & their son Lewis, L. Hitchcock Clk.

Mr. Jehiel Winchell presented a letter from Lexington Chh after examination by the Session was received into the Church the 1^st Sabbath in September. The Lords Supper was administered and three children were baptized Viz. Beri Bradely the infant daughter of Ephraim & Lola Winchell and Orinda Sibbel daughter of Joel & Betsey Peck.

Sept. 18^th 1831 Session convened at the meeting house opened with prayer appointed Samuel Atwater to attend the Presbytery at Hunter 3d Tuesday Sept. Closed with prayer. L. Hitchcock Clk.

At a public meeting on East Kill at the house of Jesse Barker after a lecture was delivered the following children were baptized viz. the children of Harlum and Sally Baldwin William, Lucina Ira C. Adaline Elizabeth Erastus Ervin & Osmer? Wheeler the children of Jesse & Esther Barker Viz Ezra Eunice Elizabeth & Lucy Oct. 27^th 1831 L. Hitchcock Clk.

Oct. 28^th 1831 Session convened at the meeting house present Samuel Atwater, Samuel Bagley, Harry R. Avery & Zalmon Hitchcock Absent L. Hitchcock & S. Chapman Opened with prayer, appeared before session the following persons for examination vix. John Dewitt and Ann Dewitt and Elizabeth Dewitt.

Sabbath evening Oct. 30^th 1831 After lecture the children of Jehiel & Martha Winchell were baptized viz. Uriah Brown, Sylvester Henson & Matilda Antinette. L. Hitchcock, clk.

Nov. 6^th 1831 sabbath, Sacrament of the Lords Supper was administered by the Pasture.

Nov. 20^th 1831 Baptism was administered to the infant son of Alanson Saxton named Adison L. Porter. L. Hitchcock, Clk.

March 2^nd 1832 Session convened at the meeting house present all the elders opened with prayer. Ephraim Winchell presented himself as desirous of uniting with the Chh he was accordingly examined and received Closed with prayer. Alfred Gardner – Mod

Sabbath 4^th March 1832 Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper was administered by the pasture and the ordinance of baptism was administered to Ephraim Winchell an adult L. Hitchcock Ck.

March 16^th 1832 session convened at the house of Luther Ford to consult upon measures to be taken to settle some discord that existed to the Chh opened with prayer present all the elders Zalmon Hitchcock excepted Session appointed a committee of three to meet with the parties at variance Viz. Samuel Bagley Samuel Chapman and the Pasture. Adjourned to March 19^th to hear the report of the committee closed with prayer

Session convened according to adjournment present all the elders committee reported that the difficulties were settled. Closed with prayer. A. Gardiner Mod. Report was adopted.

At the adjourned meeting March 19^th 1832 session appointed Samuel Chapman to attend Presbytery at Hudson 3d Tuesday in April 1832 and Samuel Bagley his alternative Agreed also to give one dollar to commissioner’s fund. L. Hitchcock, Clk.

March 25^th 1832 Urana the infant daughter of Samuel & Sarah Atwater was baptized. Lemuel Hitchcock Clk.

A meeting of the session omited to be recorded Dec. 4^th 1831 Session met, Dec. 4, 1831 and voted letters of dismission and recommendation to Patience Hitchcock & Phebe Hitchcock to become united with the church of Christ in Mount Rose. Att. Alfred Gardner Modr.

April 22^nd 1832 Session convened at the house of Samuel Atwater opened with prayer and according to their request granted to Antrim & Louis Hitchcock & Julia Woolcott letters of dismission & recommendation to any Presbyterian Church with whom they might in divine Providence wish to be connected. Lucy Avery presented a letter of dismission and recommendation for the 3 Cong. Chh. in New Haven was examined and received. Closed with pray. Alfred Gardner, Mr.

Juliaett the wife of John Chapman died Oct. 12^th 1832

Nov. 4^th 1832 Sabbath. The Lords Supper was administered by the Pastor and the following children were baptized Viz. Laura Ann Baldwin, Harriet Newel Bagley, Catharin Dewitt, Sarah Eliza Avery, Charles Ford. L. Hitchcock Clk.

February 3d 1833 Our meeting house was consumed by fire betwixt the hour of 8 & 10 O. C. in the morning.

At the same meeting of session we took into consideration the proposition concerning the division of the Presbytery Preamble and resolutions Viz.

Whereas the Presbytery of Columbia is sufficiently large to constitute two respectable Presbyteries; and is extended over so wide a territory that most of its churches and ministers would be better accommodated by a division than they now are; and, whereas much time and expense of traveling would be saved to ministers and elders to be devoted to better purpose; And, whereas the Presbytery is yearly increasing and extending its limits; and as it is extremely difficult unsafe & expensive if not impracticable to cross the North River at certain seasons of the year; Therefore, resolved 1^st that in the opinion of this Session a division of the Presbytery of Columbia is expedient, desirable, and would be beneficial to the cause of Christ in this region. 2d resolved that the North River or some parallel near it be the dividing line. – Big Hollow March 18^th 1835 - Attest Alfred Gardner, Mod. The session met in the upper school house agreeably to notice of the Moderator May 20^th 1835 at half past six O’clock P. M. and was opened with prayer. Present, Lemuel Hitchcock, Zalmon Hitchcock, Harry R. Avery, Samuel Bagley, and Samuel Atwater absent Samuel Chapman.

Lemuel Hitchcock one of the ruling elders presented to session the following charge against Alanson Saxton a member of the Church, Viz. Circulating a report that he Lemuel Hitchcock lied under oath at Johnstown in Nov. 1834 in the case of Rev. William Evans. Mr. Hitchcock having stated to the Session that he had taken the first step of discipline with Mr. Saxton agreeably to the direction given in the 18th Chapter of Matthew and failing to gain him that he had taken the second step in presence of Mr. Luther Hayse a member of the Church who was present and agreed to the statement of Mr. Hitchcock in respect to the second step of discipline as unavailing to gain Mr. Saxton. Therefore on motion it was resolved that the charge of Mr. Hitchcock against Mr. Saxton is in order for the cognisance of the session. The Session authorized and directed the Moderator to issue a citation requesting Mr. Saxton to appear before session at its next meeting. Harry R. The Session met in the meeting house agreeably to notice of the Moderator June 1^st 1835 at 6 Oclock P. M. and was opened with prayer present the Moderator, Lemuel Hitchcock, Zalmon Hitchcock, Harry R. Avery, Samuel Bagley and Samuel Atwater. Absent Sam. Chapman. Mr. Avery a ruling elder stated he had served the citation on Mr. Saxton as directed by the Session. The following charges presented by Lemuel Hitchcock against Alanson Saxton was read to Mr. Saxton Viz. circulating a report that he Lemuel Hitchcock lied under oath at Johnstown in November 1834 in the case of Rev. Wm. Evans. Mr. Saxton was then called upon agreeably to book of Government on Discipline Chapter V Sec X to say whether he is guilty or not. To which he replied, "not guilty according to my knowledge." The Session then put into the hands of the accused a coppy of the charge together with the names of the witnesses by whom it is to be proved. The Session authorized and directed the Moderator to issue citations for all the witnesses that were named by the accuser to substantiate his charge, and for all the witnesses that the accused intends to adduce for his exculpation. On motion the Session resolved to meet in the meeting house on the first Wednesday in July 1835 at 9 Oclock A. M. to try and decide the case between Mr. Hitchcock and Mr. Saxton. The parties were cited to appear before Session at that time and place. Mr. Bagley requested to be excused from sitting and acting with the Session in the case of Hitchcock and Saxton and after assigning reasons which were deamed satisfactory by the Session his request was granted. The Session met in the meeting house June 22d 1835 at 6 Oclock P. M. agreeably to the call of the Moderator and was opened with prayer. Present the Moderator, Lemuel Hitchcock, Zalmon Hitchcock, Harry R. Avery, Samuel Atwater, Samuel Chapman, Samuel Bagley. Mr. Chapman was called upon to give his reasons for absence form several meetings of the Session. Accordingly Mr. Chapman assigned reasons for absence which were sustained. The Moderator stated to session that Mr. Saxton had recently called on him several times and expressed a desire to confess to the Session that on more mature reflection he was convinced that he had done wrong in circulation a letter written by Ref. Wm. Evans in which Mr. Lemuel Hitchcock conceives that he is charged with having lied under oath at Johnstown in Nov. 1834 in the case of Rev. Wm. Evans and Mr. Horning. Mr. Saxton personally came before Session and confessed that he viewed the subject of circulating Mr. Evans letter in a different light from that in which he had viewed it when he met with the Session at a previous meeting. And that he was now convinced that he had done wrong in circulating said letter. After hearing Mr. Saxton’s confession the session passed the following preamble and resolution.

As the accuser Lemuel Hitchcock conceives that he is charged in the letter written by Rev. Wm. Evans with having lied under oath at Johnstown in Nov. 1834 in the case of Rev. Wm. Evans with Horning and as Mr. Hitchcock expected to substantiate his charge against Mr. Saxton by proveing that Mr. Saxton had circulated said letter. The Session met in the parsonage agreeably to notice of the Moderator Dec. 24^th 1835 at 2 O.C. P. M. and was opened with prayer. Present Lemuel Hitchcock, Zalmon Hitchcock, Harry R. Avery, Samuel Bagley, Samuel Atwater Absent Samuel Chapman. Jehial Winchell a member of the Chh presented to Session the following charges against Ephraim Winchell another member of the Chh. viz dishonesty in deal at Jehial Winchells barn Nov. 29^th 1835 and abusive language and conduct, Nov. 25^th do at Ephraim Winchells barn. Mr. J. Winchell having stated to the Session that he had taken the first step of discipline with Mr. E. Winchell agreeably to the direction given in the 18^th Chap. of Mathew and failing to gain him, that he had taken the 2d step in presence of Mr. Jesse Barker a member of the Chh. whose testimony agreed to the statement of Mr. Winchell in respect to the 2d step of discipline as unavailing to gain Mr. E. Winchell. Therefore on motion it was resolved that the charges of J. Winchell against E. Winchell are in order for the congnisance of the Session. Resolved that when the Session adjourn it adjourn to meet in the parsonage on Monday the 4^th day of January 1836 at 1 OC. P. M. The Session authorized and directed the Moderator to issue a citation requesting Mr. E. Winchell to appear before session at the next meeting. Harry R. The Session met in the parsonage agreeably to adjournment January 4^th 1836 at 1 OC P. M and was opened with prayer. Present L. Hitchcock, Z. Hitchcock, H. R. Avery, S. Chapman, S. Atwater, absent S. Bagley. Mr. Avery stated that he had served the citation on Mr. Winchell as directed by the session. The following charges as presented by J. Winchell against E. Winchell were read to E. Winchell Viz, dishonesty on deal Nov. 24^th 1835 at J. Winchell’s barn, and abusive language and conduct at E. Winchell’s barn Nov. 25^th 1835. Mr. E. Winchell was then called upon agreeably to book of Government on disipline to say whether he is guilty or not. Instead of a direct reply Mr. Winchell requested the privilege of giving what he deemed to be a correct statement of the whole affair. Session granted his request. After which he confessed his gilt in the charge of abusive language and conduct in E. Winchells barn, and the Session accepted his confession. But he plead not guilty to the charge of dishonest deal.

The Session then put into the hands of the accused a coppy of the charge of dishonesty together with the names of the witnesses by whom it is to be proved. The Session authorized and directed the Moderator to issue citations for all the witnesses that were named by the accuser to substantiate his charge and for all the witnesses that the accused intends to adduce for his exculpation. On motion the session voted to meet in the meeting house on Friday January 15^th 1836 at 10 OC A.M. to try and decide the case between Jehial Winchell and Ephraim Winchell. The parties were cited to appear before Session at that time and place. Closed with prayer. – L. Hitchcock Clk.

The Session met agreeably to adjournment in the meeting house Jan. 15^th 1836 opened with prayer present the mod L. Hitchcock, Z. Hitchcock, H. R. Avery, S. Chapman, S. Atwater, S. Bagley. It was moved that the minutes of the last meeting should be read, after which Mr. E. Winchell was called upon to say whether he was ready for trial to which he replied in the affirmative. The accuser was then called upon to substantiate his charge. He then called upon Samuel Winchell who was qualified and testifies as follows uncle Ephraim said to Father put on your coat and go up to the barn they had caught three sheep and put them out, I then asked Father why he did not put out that small sheep? Father said he had caught that sheep and he would not have it. Father said he would have the sheep weighed uncle Ephraim said he would take his choice. Father said well then I will have them weighted. They then went on and put out the eight sheep uncle Ephraim said you had better take this fine wooled sheep and let me have that horned sheep because it is heavier and I am going to weigh them. to Mr. Barker Q. by the accuser, Did Ephraim say he would take any sheep that had teeth. A. he said he would he did not care how old nor how coarse the wool if they had teeth. The accused then called on Samuel Avery who was qualified and testified that he went down to Jehial Winchells which he thinks was in December 1835 and heard him say he had let Ephraim have 8 sheep and that they had settled in consideration that the accuser should pay the accused nine pounds of wool next shearing time and he further stated that he would go to Ephraim and attend to weighting the sheep and if they weighed enough to ¼ double he should not have to pay the 9 pounds of wool and that if he would not pay him the wool and then he would have them weighed. Mr. Avery recollects that Mr. Winchell said that if Ephraim would take such sheep as they agreed on he would have given him 8 sheep and 9 pounds of wool. The accused then called on David Miller who was qualified and testified as follows that Mr. J. Winchell came to E. Winchells next morning after he had got the sheep home, and said he had concluded to have them weighed Ephraim said they should not be weighted there had been bargains enough about them Jehial said you agreed to have them weighed yesterday if I was a mind to, he further said it you will not have them weighed I will not pay you the wool. The question was then put to the parties whether they had any more testimony. The answer was not any. The Session then resolved that the parties should speak in their own defense and that the accused should first have the floor.

After the parties had spoken the session withdrew and the Clerk called the roll and upon each member of the session seperately who after speaking in view of the evidence which had been exhibited unanimously agreed and declared that the accuser had not sustained his charge against the accused. Whilst the session was siting and before it closed the Moderator presented a paper to session which had been previously handed to him by Mr. Jesse Barker a member of the Chh. containing the following charges against Mr. Ephraim Winchell and Jehial Winchell. Viz. quareling and fighting the said E. did twit his brother Jehial of being with Nancy Toms of telling a lie and did threaten twice of beating lashing or spliting out his brothers brains with an ax and did strike him with his fist and did lay violent hands on him and push him out of the barn. The said Jehial did then charge his brother Ephraim of telling a lie of being dishonest and said that was his character throughout the Town of Hunter Lexington and Windham and did pick up a club and call him a little infernal devil. It was also stated that these things were very public and that the cause of Christ was greatly slandered. Therefore on motion it was resolved that the charges presented by Mr. Barker against said Ephraim and Jehial Winchell are in order for the congnicance of the Session. The parties all begin present the Moderator read to them the charges and cited them to appear before session on Wednesday 27^th January 1836 at 10 O. A. M. Closed with prayer. - L. Hitchcock Clk.

Session met agreeably to adjournment at the house of Harry R. Avery Jan. 27^th 1836 Lemuel Hitchcock, Zalmon Hitchcock, Harry R. Avery, Samuel Bagley, Samuel Atwater absent Samuel Chapman opened with prayer. Mr. Ephraim Winchell appeared and threw in his plea which was that he had been tried by the session for the same offences and was acquitted on account of the absence of witnesses who had been cited to appear. Session met agreeably to adjournment at the house of Harry R. Avery Feb. 1^st 1836 present L. Hitchcock Z Hitchcock, H. R. Avery, Saml. Bagley Saml Atwater absent Saml. Chapman opened with prayer. It was moved and seconded that the charges against Ephraim Winchell and Jehial Winchell brought forward by Jesse Barker should be read. They were accordingly read, Mr. Ephraim Winchell then handed to the Moderator a paper containing a plea. On motion it was carried that Mr. Winchells plea should be read, after which, in reply to question of session Mr. Winchell says he is ready for trial. The accuser Jesse Barker introduced himself as a witness and was qualified, and in reply to question by the session what do you know about Ephraim Winchell persisting in slandering his brother since his trial and acquittal. Answer nothing since that time David Miller was then called upon and qualified and stated that some time he had heard Ephraim Winchell say while riding in a wagon with him that he was not sorry for what he had done but could not certainly tell whether it was before or after his trial and acquital but in answer to the question by the session what is your opinion my opinion is it was afterward Session withdraw and was unanimously acquitting Mr. Ephraim Winchell. Mr. Jehial Winchells case was then called on for investigation. Mr. Winchell plead guilty to all the charges brought against him by Mr. Barker but did not give satisfactory evidence to session of humility and repentance. After some consultation session resolved unanimously to suspend Mr. Winchell until he should give satisfactory evidence of repentance. Closed with prayer. – L. Hitchcock Clk

The cases of Ralf Coe and Luther Ford and Cynthia his wife members of the Chh were brought before session respecting their leaving our meeting and uniting with the methodist Chh and also denying some of the Doctrines they once professed to believe, after some conversation upon the subject, on motion a vote was taken and carried to postpone all further proceedings upon the subject until we should have the advise of presbytery. August 6^th 1837 Session met in the upper school house present the Mod. and all the Elders opened with prayer. Samantha the wife of Myron Merchant came forward and related to session her religious experience with a view of uniting with the Chh. the session were so situated that all of them did not distinctly hear so that no decission was made upon her case at that time. Sept. 12^th 1837 Session met at the upper school house present the Mod. Elders L. Hitchcock, Z. Hitchcock, S. Chapman, S. Atwater, S. Bagley absent H. R. Avery opened with prayer L. Hitchcock was appointed to attend meeting at Synod at Schnectady S. Bagley alternate and H. R. Avery was appointed to attend meeting of presbytery at Cairo 3d Tuesday Sept. Zalmon Hitchcock alternate. Samuel Law appeared before the Session and confessed what he had done wrong in speaking slanderous words against the Chh. Dec. 3d 1837 Session met at upper school house present mod. L. Hitchcock, Z. Hitchcock, S. Bagley, S. Atwater, absent H. R. Avery and S. Chapman opened with prayer. Mrs. Samantha Merchant who had before been examined was now received by vote of session. The cases of Luther Ford and his wife and Ralf Coe which were refered to presbytery for advise to know what to do. They having left our meeting and united with the methodist Chh and also deny some of the doctrines they once assented to. Session thought best at the time to abide by the advise of presbytery which was that session should say that they have irregularly withdrawn from the Church. Closed with prayer. - L. Hitchcock Clk.

Session met in the parsonage agreeably to appointment Feb.19^th 1838 present were the Mod and all the Elders opened with prayer. The Moderator stated to session that the object of the meeting was to ascertain what should be done in regard to the different offenses of which common fame accused the mebbers of the church viz. Jehiel Winchell of intoxication, Seth Peck of gambling and Lewis Baldwin of taking the divine name in vain. After having the statement of the Moderator session appointed Samuel Chapman a committee to ascertain what testimony if any can be obtained in reference to the case of Mr. Winchel and Harry R. Avery to ascertain what testimony can be obtained if any in respect to the case of Mr. Peck.

As Mr. Baldwin was expecting soon to remove to the west it was deemed expedient that a committee should be appointed to visit him. Zalmon Hitchcock was appointed that committee. Closed with prayer. - L. H. Clk

At the request of Mr. Baldwin session was called together and they met in the parsonage Feb. 23^rd at 4 O, clock P. M. present the Mod. And all the elders opened with prayer. The committee appointed to visit Mr. Baldwin reported that Mr. Baldwin did not admit the offence of which it was said common fame accused him, and requested that Session should proceed to adduce testimony if there was any to prove that he had taken the name of God in vain. The report was accepted and Mr. Chapman and Mr. Bagley were appointed committees to ascertain what testimony if any could be obtained in reference to the case of Mr. Baldwin. Session met Feb. 26^th 1838 at one Oclock P.M. in the parsonage agreeably to adjournment present the Mod. And all the elders opened with prayer. Mr. Baldwin appeared before Session and was questioned by the Mod. Whether he plead guilty he said not guilty. Mr. Horris Bagley was then called upon and qualified and testified that on the last of may or the first of June 1837 as he was coming home from work he heard Mr. Baldwin say under apparent irritation that Mr. Hough charged him to much for a days work, he said by God he would let him know if he was a boy he would do as much as a man Mr. Bagley says I have been in his company and heard him use profane language such as devil—Mr. Nelson Avery was next called upon and qualified and testified that on the last of June or the first of July 1837 heard Mr. Baldwin say God dam or God darn it, it was in consequence of a tree falling differently from which they expected. At other times I heard him say devil and little curse. Mr. Baldwin Q. ion you state any particular time when you hear me speak those bad words, witness A. in the sap bush working for your father I heard you say little devil. Mr. Wm. Drace was then called upon and qualified and testified that Mr. Baldwin say damn the infernal tree into eternity it is enough to make a minister swear. Mod. asked Mr. Baldwin if he had any witness A. not any. Mr. Baldwin retires. Mr. Bagley was first called upon to say whether the charge be sustained Answer, in my opinion it is. Mr. Chapman says I agree with Mr. Bagley Mr. H. R. Avery declines giving his opinion. Mr. Z. Hitchcock thinks the charge is sustained. L. Hitchcock thinks the chare is sustained. The Moderator declares the charge against Mr. Baldwin for taking the name of the Divine Being in vain, sustained. Session then suspended Mr. Baldwin to give him time for repentance. Mr. Baldwin was then called in and was asked by the Moderator if he acknowledged the crime proved against him. Answer I do not, The Moderator then declares Mr. Baldwin suspended from the communion of the church meeting. The Moderator announced to him that the charge was sustained. At the call of the Moderator session met in the parsonage April 9^th 1838 present the Mod. and all the elders opened with prayer. Mr. Avery the committee appointed to ascertain what evidence if any could be adduced in the case of Mr. Peck reported that from the best information he could obtain there is not testimony sufficient to substantiate the charge of which common fame accused him. At the call of the Mod. Session met in the parsonage April 27, 1838 present the Mod. elders L. Hitchcock, S. Bagley, H. R. Avery, Z. Hitchcock, S. Atwater absent S. Chapman opened with prayer. The Mod stated to session that the object of the meeting was to ascertain what should be done in regard to the offence of which common fame accused Mr. Edmond Avery & Rachel his wife Viz drinking to excess. Session appointed Samuel Bagley and Lemuel Hitchcock a committee to ascertain what evidence can be obtained in respect to the accused.

Mr. Atwater was appointed a committee to ascertain what evidence can be obtained in regard to Mr. Jehial Winchells case. Mr. Zalmon was appointed to serve a citation upon Mr. Luther Ford to appear before session to answer for denying some of the articles of faith at the time and place specified in the citation. The Mod. was authorized by session to issue the citation. Session adjourned to meet at the meeting house May 11^th at 3 O.c. P. M. –Closed with prayer. – L. Hitchcock

May 11^th 1838 Session convened in the meeting house agreeably to adjournment. Present L. Hitchcock, Z. Hitchcock, H. R. Avery, S. Chapman, absent S. Bagley, S. Atwater. opened with prayer. Mr. Ford appeared before session agreeably to the citation. The Mod. mentioned to Mr. Ford that accusation contained in the citation and enquired whether he acknowledged himself guilty he replied not guilty. Then at the request of Mr. Ford and the Church articles of faith were read and exceptions were made to the 8^th 9^th and 10^th articles by Mr. Ford should have liberty to prepare three articles which should embrace his view upon the 8^th 9^th & 10^th articles. May 25^th 1838 Session met at the meeting house agreeably to adjournment the Mod. and all the elders were present. opened with prayer. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved those members of session who were absent at the last meeting were called to an account and excused. The committee appointed to ascertain what evidence could be obtained in the case of Mr. & Mrs. Avery reported and their report was accepted. Mr. Samuel Chapman was appointed to serve a citation upon Mr. Edmond Avery and Rachel his wife to appear before Session to answer to offences of which common fame accused them. Resolved that the following paper be presented to session by Luther Ford purporting to contain an expression of this view of the 4^th 8^th 9^th and 10^th articles of the confession of faith of this church, recorded on pages 84,85,86 and 87 also on file with the Clerk—is in the opinion of the session not only contrary to those articles but appears to have been designed to cast contempt upon them. Session appointed Mr. S. Bagley a committee to inform Mr. Ford what the session had done and also to inform Mr. Ford that there was still an opportunity for him to come before session and give Christian satisfaction. Session met in the meetinghouse agreeably to adjournment June 5^th 5 OC P. M. present the Mod. and all the elders except Mr. Atwater. Mr. Edmond Avery appeared before session but denied the charge with which common fame accused him. Mr. Bagley who was appointed to visit Mr. Ford and read to him the following papers reported that he had done his duty. Mr. Ford, from the view which the session entertain of the paper bearing your signature, they are under the necessity of informing you that they understand it to contain a denial of the 4^th 8^th 9^th & 10^th articles of our confession of faith and as appearing to be designed to cast contempt upon them and that unless you come forward at the next meeting of session to be held in the meeting house on the 5^th day of June at 5 OC P. (On Fourth Article—Mr. Ford:)

That God created all things visable and invisible and is the ruler of the Heaven and of the earth is true; and after making man gave him ability to obey his commands and to keep the Law given him, and commanded him to keep the Law given him, and commanded him to love him to keep the Sabbath to do no murder not to steal nor commit adultery, Now because mankind do not love him more regard the Sabbath and murder and steel shall we say that it is according to the eternal plan of God that man should do these things and that he was moved upon or governed by an irresistable impulse to do them where then is the moral agency or accountability of man. Jeremiah 7^th 31^st The 8^th article I believe to embrace the doctrine of unconditional election which in my opinion is contrary to the word of God and to much advances towards Universalism. Elected or saved from Eternity they of course must have been the righteous, and Christ says he came not to call the righteous but siners to repentance I believe instead of 8^th article He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved and he that believeth not shall be damned Mark 16^th 16^th The ninth article too much builds up the 8^th that the elect seed said to have been given to Christ from Eternity although unwilling shall be made willing by a special favor or impulse which others do not have and of course are either left to themselves or to welter out a long Eternity under the wrath of God. For what? Because they never had the special calling –God is no respecter of persons but in every nation he that feareth him and worketh righteousness is accepted with him. Acts 10^th 34.35 The 10^th article is inseperably connected with the 8^th and 9^th and in my opinion is in one instance contrary to the word of God that the new birth according to the article proceeds repentance and faith which renders the punished sinner excusable and casts the blame on God that they could not repent and believe as they were commanded without being regenerated and this favor conferred upon none but he elect from Eternity. Christ says ye would not come unto me that ye might have life He does not say ye could not which evidently would be the case without the special call were the articles true. For the infallible connection between the change and Eternal Salvation see Ezekiel 18^th 26^th. In closing these remarks I would say I believe none can come unto Christ except the Father draw him and Christ says and I if I be lifted up from the earth will draw men unto me, and he evidently has been lifted up, as the serpent was in the wilderness that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life. And all have felt the drawings of the spirit, the grace of God that bringeth salvation that appeared unto all me, and we all have been irresistibly convinced of sin and that we must be born of the spirit or never enter the Kingdom of Heaven but this is not regeneration as many do have it, if it is and there is an infallible connection between it and eternal salvation then all will be saved. We may be irresistibly convinced but not converted irresistably but while we are under the convincing power of God if we will yield to be saved bygrace we may feel his converting power. But to believe that God commands the whole human family to repent, and except they do they shall all perish and at the same time has a descreetive will that some of them should not repent casts a stigma upon the character of Jehovah and which I will fear will awfully alarm those that advocate it in the Eternal world. For 10^th article and the whole if our Gospel is hid it is to them that are lost whom the god of this world hath blinded, the eyes of them that see not lest the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ who is the image of God should shine unto them 2d Cor 4^th 3d 4^th With these remarks I leave the event with God feeling no condemnation for endeavuring to embrace the truth and to build upon the Rock Christ Jesus and on no other foundation. And if our hearts condemn us not. Then have we confidence toward God and peace through our Lord Jesus Christ. Farewell may the lord be with you.

The session met agreeably to adjournment at the house of Mr. Monger April 5^th 1839 at 5 O.Clock P. M. and was opened with prayer. The Moderator, and elders excepting Mr. Atwater, and Mr. Bagley, were present. The Moderator read the Session a letter from Lewis Baldwin in which Mr. Baldwin requested a letter of dismission and recommendation for himself & wife. As Mr. Baldwin is under suspension, and as his letter contains no evidence of repentance, session resolved that his request be not granted. Session authorized the moderator to write to Mr. Baldwin and inform him of the reasons that his request could not be granted. Resolved, that the request of Mrs. Baldwin be granted, as soon as she shall herself signify her desire to be dismissed from this church and recommended to some Presbyterian Church which she shall designate. At the call of the Mod. Session met at the house of the pastor Dec. 22d 1840 2: OC P. M. present the Mod. and all the Elders except Mr. Bagley opened with prayer. Mr. Ephraim Winchell a member of the Chh presented to session three charges against Jesse Barker another member of the Chh. Two of which are the following viz; 1^st that Mr. Barker aided and assisted in taking and carrying off my buckwheat and potatoes 2d that he Jesse Barker reported that Ephraim Winchell had cheated widow Munson. Mr. Winchell then stated to session that he had taken the first step of discipline with Mr. Barker agreeably to the direction given in the 18^th chapter of Mathew and failing to gain him that he had taken the 2d step in presence of Thomas Hitchcock who was present and agreed to the statement of Mr. Winchell in respect to the second step of discipline as unavailing to gain Mr. Barker. Therefore on motion it was resolved that the first two charges of Mr. Winchell brought against Mr. Barker were in order for the cognizance of the session. The 3d charge session gave Mr. Winchell liberty to withdraw therefore on motion the session authorized and directed the Mod. to issue a citation requesting Mr. Barker appear before session at its next meeting. Mr. Orrin Peck a ruling Elder was directed to serve the citation. Adjourned to meet at the house of Mr. Gardner Jan. 1^st 1841 1. O.C. P. M. closed with prayer. – L. Hitchcock Clk

Session met at the house of the Pastor January 15^th 1841 at 10 Oclock A. M. agreeably to adjournment and was opened with prayer, present the Mod. and the elders L. Htichcock, H. R. Avery, and Sam. Atwater, absent Orrin Peck, Z. Hitchcock, Sam Bagley, the minutes of the last meeting were read. The accuser Mr. E. Winchell not appearing before the Session and the session having been credibly informed that he had taken the accused Jesse Barker with a warrant before a civil court for an assault and battery the session adopted the following preamble and resolution:

Whereas Ephraim Winchell the accused of Jesse Barker before the Session failed to appear before it at the time appointed for the trial of said Barker with a warrant for an assault and battery before a civil court at the identical time when the session of the Church were to meet to try his cause, Therefore resolved that the litigious spirit manifested by Mr. Winchell renders it improper and unconstitutional for the Session to take any further action in his case at present, An whereas common fame reports the said Jesse Barker and E. Winchell as having been recently guilty of unchristian and abusive conduct in respect to each other, Therefore resolved 2dly that when the cause between them shall be decided in the civil court or courts, session will proceed to take proper action in case. At the call of the Mod. session met at the house of Mr. Orrin Peck 4^th 1841 at evening present the Mod. and elders H. R. Avery, Lem Hitchcock, Orrin Peck. Opened with prayer. Mr. Oliver Coe and wife presented letters of dismission and recommendation from Hunter Chh to this Chh. They were accordingly examined on doctrinal and experimental religion and cordially received. Adjourned to meet at the meeting house next day March 5^th at half past 3 O.C. P. M.

Session met at the meetinghouse agreeably to adjournment March 5^th ½ past 3 OC P. M. present the Mod. and all the Elders opened with prayer. Eveline the wife of Lucius Hitchcock was examined by session upon doctrinal and experimental religion with a view of uniting with the Chh. Session sustained her examination and then adjourned to the house of the Pastor agreeably to a request of Mr. Edmond Avery whom common fame had accused of using spirituous liquors to excess he having previous notice that the session was about to take notice of his conduct. After some conversation with the session Mr. Avery concluded to make a public confession of his guilt which he did on the following public confession:

I, Jesse Barker hereby confess to the church and to the words that on the 13^th day of this month I did near my house inflict with a stick of considerable size several blows on the person of Ephraim Winchell and that by so doing I have sined against God wounded the cause of Christ, grieved the Church and given sinners occasion to speak reproachfully of the Christian religion which I have professed, having as I hope been brought to repentance for this offence and as I trust received the pardoning mercy of God I have confidence that I shall be forgiven of the Church Jan. 30^th 1841 And Mr. Ephraim Winchell having made the following confession to the session: I Ephraim Winchell hereby confess to the session that in taking Mr. Barker before a civil court at the time when I requested the session that in taking Mr. Barker before a civil court at the time when I requested the session to meet for the purpose of trying the case between me and Mr. Barker I showed a disrespect to the session and a contempt of their ecclesiastical authority. I therefore ask their forgiveness. I likewise consider that I did wrong in taking Mr. Barker before a civil court instead of bringing the case before the session. Hitchcock Resolved that Mr. Silvester Munger attend the meeting of synod at Troy, Oct. next. Resolved that Mr. S. Atwater be his Alternate. Resolved that we pay out of the Church treasury three dollars for commissioners fund to the General Assembly. Resolved that Mr. S. Munger be a committee to inquire into reports respecting Mr. J. Coe The Moderator stated to Session that the object of the meeting was to ascertain what should be done in reference to the offences of which Common fame charged Mr. Isaac Hull, viz: Absenting himself from the house of God and from the Sacraments of the Lords Supper for several months in succession, originating & circulating reports unfavoral to the character of the pastor to the church and also of the Session Session authorized the Moderator to issue a citation requiring Mr. Hull to appear before Session Nov. 17^th at One O. clk P. M. H. R. Avery was appointed to serve the citation Adjourned to meet in the meetinghouse Nov. 17^th 1841 at One O,Clk P. M. Closed with prayer.

The Session met in the Meetinghouse Nov. 17^th 1841 at One O,Clk P. M. and was opened with prayer. Present the Moderator, and all the elders. The Moderator called on Mr. Avery to state whether he had served the citation on Mr. Hull. Mr. Avery stated that he had served it. Mr. Hull being present the Moderator read to him the following charges, of which common fame had accused him viz, 1. Voluntarily absenting yourself from the house of God on the Sabbath, and also from the Sacrament of the Lords Supper for several months in succession. 2. Originating & circulating reports unfavorable to the Christian & ministerial character of the pastor of the church of which you are a member. 3. Originating & circulating reports unfavorable to the character of the Session of the church of which you are a member.

The Moderator then called upon Mr. Hull to say whether he was guilty of the offenses contained in these charges. Mr. Hull replied, they are true. He proceeded immediately to make a confession, which covered the charges; and then asked the forgiveness of the Moderator or pastor and of the Session. Mr. Avery then moved that the confession of Mr. Hull be accepted. In connection with this motion, he decided not to say anything, upon the merits of the confession; but simply to take it into the hands of the Session, with a view to their deciding what they would do with it. The Motion having been seconded, the Moderator stated to Session that by voting to accept the confession, they did not say whether they would disapprove or approve of it. They simply took it into their hands for examination. With this explanation of them over, and the Moderator; the motion to accept the confession was carried. As the offences embraced in the charge had been widely spread the Session deemed it requisite for the honor of religion, the satisfaction of the church and the greatest good of the offender that the confession be made public, in which all the members participated, Session required Mr. Hull to make his confession public. To this requisition, Mr. Hull consented and although he did not specify the Sabbath when he would make his confession public, yet he said he would do it soon. Session authorized the Moderator to issue a citation for L. Baldwin a suspended member of the church S. Atwater appointed to cite him. Closed with prayer.

Session met in the study of the pastor Dec. 10^th 1841 at 6 O.clk P. M. at call of Moderator and was opened with prayer. Present the Moderator and the following elders. H. R. Avery, S. Atwater and O. Peck, absent Z. Hitchcock, L Hitchcock and O. Coe Mr. Lucius Lewis Baldwin appeared before Session agreeably to the citation that had been served upon him. On account of the absence of the record touching the case of Mr. Baldwin, and the fewness of the members of Session present, after hearing some statements from Mr. Baldwin, and requesting him to examine the records in reference to his case, Session adjourned to meet in the study of the pastor Dec. 15^th 1841 at 2 O,Clk P. The Session met in the study of the pastor, Dec. 15^th at 2 o.Clk p. M. agreeably to adjournment, and was opened with prayer. Present, the Moderator, and all the elders. Session discussed the case of Mr. Baldwin, but did not decide it. The following preamble and resolution, were adopted in relation to the case of Mr. Hull. Whereas common fame accused Mr. Hull a member of this church of persisting in offences of which he made confession before Session on the 17^th of Nov. last and whereas the said Mr. Hull, fails after having had ample time to make his confession public, as Session required him to do, and as he consented to do, and whereas session has no evidence of the sincerity of Mr. Hull’s confession, by any facts meet for repentance; therefore resolved that Mr. Hull be cited to appear before Session, at a meeting to be held in the study of the pastor, on the last Monday in Dec. 1841 at 12 O.clk P. M. to show cause, if he have any, why the Session should not proceed to carry out the principles of discipline applicable in his case. Mr. Coe appointed to cite Mr. Hull Closed with prayer.

The Session met in the study of the pastor, Dec. 27^th 1841 agreeably to adjournment, and was opened with prayer. Present the Moderator, and all the elders. After ascertaining that Elder Coe had served the citation to Mr. Hull, who being present acknowledged, that the citation has been served on him, the Moderator read to Mr. Hull the charge of persisting in the offences of which common fame had accused him, and of which he had made confession on the 17^th of Nov., and asked him if he were guilty of persisting in them? Mr. Hull replied in the affirmative; and said he was ready for trial. He then made to the Session some statements, in which though he had already confessed the truth of the charges alledged against him, he endeavored to justify his conduct and cast aspersions on the Session. The Moderator plainly and solemnly informed Mr. Hull what must be the inevitable result of persisting in his present course. Notwithstanding the solemn & affectionate admonitions of the judiciary in respect to the consequences of the course he was pursuing, Mr. Hull still manifested an entire act or aversion from making a publick confession of his offences; and expressed a total indifference in relation to what the Session might do in his case. The Moderator then solemnly reminded the Session that it was his duty to announce to them, that they were about to sit in a judicial capacity, and to enjoin on the members, to recollect, and regard their high character as judges of a court of Jesus Christ, and the solemn duty in which they were about to act. The Session then united with Mr. Coe, in prayer for the blessing of God on the offender, and for grace and wisdom, to guide them in the solemn duty, before them. Having expressed their views, it was moved and seconded that Isaac Hull, be and hereby is excommunicated from the Second Presbyterian Church of Windham. The motion passed unanimously. In accordance with this act, the Session instructed the Moderator to read from the pulpit, at the close of the services, on the second Sab. in Jan 1842, the sentence of excommunication. Session met in the study of the Pastor March 14^th 1842 at 2 OClk, P. M. agreeably to the call of the Moderator, and was opened with prayer. Present the Moderator and all the elders. Session appointed Lemuel Hitchcock to attend the meeting of Presbytery to be held at Stockport on the 3d Tuesday in April 1842, and Samuel Atwater his substitute. As the Session was about to consider and decide the case of Lewis Baldwin, a suspended member of the church, the Moderator enjoined on the members to recollect, and regard their high character, as judges of a court of Jesus Christ and the solemn duty in which they were about to act.

It was moved and seconded that the following preamble and resolution to adopted in relation to the case of Mr. Baldwin viz; Whereas it appears from the Records of Session found on pages 76, 77 and 78, that Lewis Baldwin was, in 1838, accused by common fame of using profane language, or taking the name of God in vain; that the charge was proved by unimpeached testimony and sustained by the Session; and that Mr. Baldwin, pleading not guilty was consequently suspended. And whereas the Session have delayed to take up the case of Mr. Baldwin again till recently, on account of his absence from the place; And whereas, Mr. Baldwin having recently been before the Session, continued to deny the charge proved against him in 1838; Therefore resolved that Lewis Baldwin be and hereby is excommunicated from the 2d Presbyterian church of Windham. The members were then called upon individually to express their views, with reference to taking the final vote. Having expressed their views, the above preamble and resolution were adopted. Peck is appointed his alternate. Resolved that Mr. Jehial Winchel be cited to appear before Session at the close of the next preparatory lecture on the third day of May 1844 at 2. Clk P. M. at the meeting house, to answer to the charge of intoxication of which common fame accuses him. Resolved that Mr. O. Peck serve the citation on Mr. J. Winchel. Resolved that the committee appointed to visit Mrs. Betts be required to visit her again and if she does not give satisfactory reason for her long absence from the house of God on the Sabbath that they cite her to appear before session at a meeting to be held in the meeting house above mentioned. And the moderator be authorized to issue a citation. Resolved that the treasurer of the Church be authorized to raise three dollars for the commissioners fund if necessary. All present. the committee appointed to visit Mrs. Betts reported that she gave several reasons for not attending meeting on the Sabbath first that she had no way of conveyance Second that she had no one to leave her small children with. Third, that she had (??) in the house of God. Resolved that in view of the reasons that Mrs. Betts gave the matter be deferred until more light Mr. J. Winchel appeared before session and made a sort of confession which was not accepted Resolved that Mr. J. Winchel be suspended from the Communion of this Church. The committee not able to obtain any evidence on Mr. J. Winchel case the session thought it best not to proceed any further. Session met at the house of the pastor Feb. 19^th 1845 at 2 Oclock P. M. agreeably to the call of the moderator at the request of two Elders. And was opened with prayer all present except Mr. Z. Hitchcock. On motion resolved that the Session take up the case of Edmond Avery a member of this Church Common fame having accused Mr. Avery of having been dis(??) with liquor in the month of September when returning from Hudson in company with his wife (now deceased), and with M. A. Atwater & wife. 2. of intoxication at his own house on the 3d of Feb. 1845. and Mr. Avery having been informed of this meeting its object and the witnesses that would be received against him. And he having consented to waive the constitutional right of ten days notice, and being present and declaring himself ready for trial. The witnesses also being present by request, the clerk read to Mr. Avery the charges. Alfred Atwater qualified & said, That he saw Mr. E. Avery drink over at Mr. Grants in Catskill, and that he did not appear to be himself, he appeared to be very much enraged all the way home and Mr. Avery tried lately to convince me that my wife did wrong. Mr. Atwater qualified and said that when we were on our way to Hudson we stopped at Mr. Olmsteds Tavern in Acra Mr. Avery asked his wife if she could not have some spirits and said that he had had a glass of gin. He appeared rational from this time till on our return to Catskill. He got to Mr. Grants, and came out with a glass of brandy to his wife and went back to the bar and drank I remarked to him that I was afraid that the cause of Christ would suffer. Mr. Avery was offended and reproved me for it. Jason Hitchcock qualified and says that he started on the third day of Feb. 1845 and went to go to Mr. A. Atwaters for a visit and when I got in sight of Mr. Avery house Mr. Avery was at the door appeared to be alocking the door, then I was out of sight of him, and when I came in sight and opposite of him, he went crooked and appeared to be intoxicated I had not intended to speak to him, he then turned round and ran up against the fence, as if he had no power of management, and said he was a poor miserable distressed creature. I then started my team on, and he started for his house. I went up to Mr. Atwaters and stayed about half an hour Mr. Atwater said that we would go and see if Mr. Avery had gone to Mr. Hunts and we went out of the door, and saw that Mr. Averys horse had gone. I said to Mr. Atwater that we had better go down and see to him. We went down and found Mr. Avery on the floor he spoke but seemed to know but very little, we saw broken bottles & chairs turned over, the appearance had them was cider or vinegar frozen over the stove. We then went down to the hollow, and saw Mr. Birnhess? & E. Peck and told them the situation they told us to go back, and make a fire as the weather was very cold. We went back to the house and found Mr. Avery on the bed with is over coat & boots on. I then asked him if we should not build a fire. He said yes, and when we was making the fire, he said there was a jug of whiskey in the buttery, he wanted I should get him a glass, for he said he should freeze to death, if he did not have it. We had found the jug and told him there was none. He through off the cloes & said it would take a drunkard to find the jug, he got up & went into the buttery to look for his jug, he went to other places & looked for it but did not find it he then wanted I should draw him some cider, he said if I wouldnot he would and drew some and drank of it. We then left him and went up to Mr. Atwaters. The witness questioned by the session and said the they were advised to secure the jug. Mr. Atwater said that he lived about 40 rods from Mr. Avery. Mr. A. Atwater says that on Saturday the first day of Feb. Mr. Avery was unable to take care of his health. As the weather was very cold I had occasion to be there often Mrs. Lucy Clarke & Lydia Avery was there and said was afraid to stay with him and wished me to come down on Saturday evening I went down with the view of staying all night if necessary. I stayed till about half past eight, but told Lydia several times in the evening to go home he did not want her there. he would not pay a cent for taking care of Mrs. Clark, who was quite sick that day he said he was agoing to sleep with her that night he would take better care of her than any woman in big hollow. Lydia told him he should not, he said he would soon after this he went to her with his over coat on and soon got to sleep. Sabbath evening I was in there and he asked me how he got to bed or how did I get to bed. Monday morning he came to my house soon after sunrise and wanted me to go and harness his horse, he said he would not, he stated that he was going to Mr. Hunts Tavern to hire a room, he said after 10 Oclk that day there would be no admittance in his house for Priest Levite or Denon(?) He wanted me to fodder in his cattle, he could hardly get about. The rest of my testimony does not differ from Mr. J. Hitchcock. A Monday night & Tuesday morning he continued very much the same drinking cider very often. Mrs. Lucy Atwater testified that on Monday the 3^rd of Feb 1845 that she thought from Mr. Averys appearance that he was intoxicated and that she saw him break two bottles on the stove and said property was of no consequence to him. He then said that he should get money and pay all his debts and put 50 dollars into Mr. Gardner’s hand to buy (?) with he said he hoped that Mrs. Clark would not be damned on his sins. Resolved that the charges against Mr. E. Avery be expelled from the communion of this Church to be delivered from the pulpit at the close of the services this coming Sabbath. Closed with Prayer O. Therefore resolved that Mr. Edmond Avery hereby be excommunicated from this church and the sentence of excommunication be read from the pulpit on one of the coming Sabbaths in this month at the opening or closing of public worship at the discretion of the moderator. Resolved that Mr. J. Winchel and the witness against him be cited to appear before Session at a meeting to be held a this place on Friday this 21^st inst at 2 O.Clk. P. M. for trial. Resolved that Mr. Samuel Atwater attend the meeting of presbytery at Lexington Heights the last Tuesday in April next. Mr. O. Peck was appointed his alternate. Whereas Mr. J. Winchel a member of the 2^nd Presbyterian Church of Windham was suspended from the communion of this Church May 3,1844 for the sin of intoxication of which common fame had accused him. And whereas he has recently made a written confession for a repetition of the same offence, which he has verbally denied to several members of session And whereas he utterly refused to be present, when the confession should be made public, and whereas he has made several confessions in years past for the same offence which were followed by reformation only for a short period, Therefore resolved that the said Jehiel Winchel be and hereby is excommunicated from this Church and the sentence of excommunication be read from the pulpit the coming sabbath. Hitchcock Mrs. Chloe Chapman presented to session a letter of dismission and recommendation from the congregational church in Durham which having been read and Mrs. C. being examined on the doctrines of the Bible and experimental religion, it was on motion, resolved unanimously that she be received as a member of the 2d Presbyterian Church of Windham, and she was received accordingly. The Session met at the house of the Moderator, agreeably at this call Oct 7^th 1850 at 11 Oclk A. M and was opened with prayer. William Brandow, Alfred Atwater having been chosen to the office of ruling elder, and ordained, are hereby recognized as member so the Session Elders present, Samuel Atwater, S. Munger, William Brandow, and Alfred Atwater, Lemuel Hitchcock. The Moderator read to the Session a letter from the Presbyterian Church in Hunter, dismission of Charles S. Beach from that Church and recommending him to the Second Presbyterian Church of Windham. He also read a letter from Mr. Beach in which he gives his Christian experiences accompanied with the request that he may be received as a member of this church. As Mr. Beach is of a considerable distance from the place and it is very important he should now be received with reference to his being taken under the care of Presbytery at its next meeting, therefore resolved that his request be granted. At the call to the Moderator Session met in the meeting house Sep. 3d 1852 at 3Oclk P. M. and opened with prayer. Present the Moderator and All the elders except Z Hitchcock The following candidates were examined on experimental religion and in respect to their belief of the doctrines of the Bible; Viz. Lois Hough, Sarah Ann Hitchcock, Nancy G. Peck and Julia Hitchcock. Their examination on motion was sustained. On motion, resolved that they be admitted into the church, the next Sabbath. They were accordingly after the baptism of Lydia Hitchcock admitted as member of the church on the 1^st Sabbath of Feb. 1852 Mr. Brandow was appointed to attend the meeting of Synod in the city of Albany and A. Session met at the call of the Moderator Feb. 6^th 1853 at 12 Oclock P.M. at his house and was opened with prayer. Present the moderator, and all the elders excepting Z Hitchcock and L. Hitchcock. On motion it was resolved, that a meeting of the male members of the church, be called on the 24^th of Feb. next at 2 O Clock P. M. to meet in the meeting house for the purpose of appointing commissioners to attend the next meeting of Presbytery and show cause if they have any why the Pastor should not have leave to resign his pastoral charge.
