This burying ground is on the east side of Route 32, known as the Cairo-Saxton Rd. It is about two miles south of the intersection of Routes 32 and 23A. About 100 feet east of the highway, just over a rise of the ground. The southern boundary of Greene County is only several feet south of the burying ground. The burying ground at this date (1963) is covered with short brush and weeds; it has been kept cut but is growing up. The King plot in the southwest corner has a good iron fence around it and the grass kept mowed. There are also two other small plots with fences around them. There must be many people buried here without markers and some where the markers have disappeared. According to Mr. George Saile who lives nearby there are several Indian graves in the southeast corner, a large red cedar stands there now. The burying ground is large, a bout one acre or more in size.

This is a very early burying ground, and has one of the oldest dated stones seen thus far, 1723 S*S, on a small piece of blue stone. There are several veteran graves and one soldier of the revolution. Also the early stones with the name Kernricke on it has come down to be called Carnwright. This is explained in Mr. Chadwick and Mrs. J.V.V. Vedders book, "The Old Times Corner", page 115.

This burying ground come off the Myer-Wyncoop Patents who owned all the land around here. The Wynkoop and Myer families built the two old stone houses across the highway from the burying ground. Later these stone houses were owned by the Sailes and Abeels. (Old Times Corner, page 24). The Wynkoops also had a stone house at the Drummond Falls at Palenville. The Drummond family house was also near the falls.

Although known as the Saile-Abeel burying ground there are quite a few family plots in it. The King family home is about half a mile south of the burying ground in Ulster County., just off Route 32, on the Nelson Hoff Road. There was a Benj. Peck living on what is now Pennsylvania Ave. Palenville in the 1850’s. The Plugh, Burhans and Marriott families were related to the Sailes by marriage.

The old stones are on the north end of the burying ground in the center about 50 to 75 feet south of the fence. The Burhans and Kernricke stones, the "1723" and "M.Y. 1784" and the stone with "here lies the body of Tobias Wynkoop" are here. This Tobias Wynkoop must be the original settler of the patent. The last burial here was J. Lewis Scutt of Palenville, who died in Jan. 1963 and was buried here in May 1963. More about the families buried here and the country about can be read in Mrs. J.V.V. Vedders "History of Greene County" and "The Old Times Corner."
