Sir

A letter was maled at this office September 14th for New Bergen P Office – written by Samuel Drew addressed to Nancy his wife, containing money, say 2 ten & 1 five doll’r bills in all $20 – It appears that said Nancy left your place on her way here to join her said husband – previous to the recpt of said letter – she giving instructions to her brother Hiram Hotchkiss to call for said letter, to open it & convert the contents thereof to his own use – he having advanced to her the money in anticipation of said letter & contents –  

The enclosed letter written by Hiram Hotchkiss dated Septr. 24th – addressed to James Drew at Coxsackie & mailed at Brockport P. Office – as you will perceive – was handed to me this day by L Wheeler Esqr. – who it appears lent said Drew the money contained in said letter in order to defray the expenses of his wife to him here – moreover Mr. H. Brown Assistant P. Master in this office recollects the circumstance – he being requested to make a memorandum at this time –  

My object in enclosing to you the within letter, is to place before you a portion of the transaction, in order to enable you to form some Idea of the Character & Complection of the Actors in this business – Also to learn from you whether the statements contained in said enclosed letter, are correct 

You will please to return to this office the enclosed letter – also to furnish such information relating to the foregoing transaction as may come to your knowledge –
