Maplecrest
Cemetery
(formerly known
as the Big Hollow Cemetery)
Maplecrest, Town of Windham, Greene County, NY
Section 1
The Maplecrest Cemetery (formerly known as the Big Hollow
Cemetery) is located along the west side of County Route 56, three-tenths of a
mile from the intersection of County Routes 40 and 56, in the hamlet of
Maplecrest, Town of Windham, Greene County, NY. The name of the hamlet was
changed from Big Hollow to Maplecrest on May 23, 1921. Burials made prior to
this date should be recorded in your genealogical records as having been made in
the Big Hollow Cemetery, as this is what will appear on death certificates and
in newspaper accounts. Burials made on or after that date should be recorded as
taking place in the Maplecrest Cemetery.
The cemetery is enclosed by a stone wall across the back and left side, and a
chain-link fence across the front and right side. There are two entrance gates.
This section, located to the left of the first gate, was added to the cemetery
in the spring of 1904.
The April 21, 1904, issue of The Windham Journal stated, "Work has
begun on the new cemetery grounds. Manly Mallory is laying out three tiers of
lots in good shape and has taken the wall away from between the new and old
ground, and will lay a nice wall on two sides of the new ground. A committee has
been appointed to try and raise money enough to place an iron fence front to
both the new and old cemeteries, and to otherwise improve the old ground.
Many in this locality have friends buried there, and it is desired that all
interested will do their part in contributing towards a long needed improvement.
Wm. H. Moseman and J. F. Moseman are the appointed committee to raise and
receive money from any desiring to give."
I have only listed the gravestones found in two of the three tiers
mentioned in the newspaper article. The third tier is located to the right of
the gate and will be included with the old section. Manly Mallory was given his
choice of burial plots in exchange for his labor. Ironically the first person to
be buried in this section was his wife, Ella Joslin.
These inscriptions were read on August 26, 2000, by Patricia Morrow, the Windham
Town Historian. Each row was read from left to right, starting at the front of
the cemetery.

Section 3 (newest section)
Within twelve years after the plots in Section 1 had been laid
out and sold, it became necessary to enlarge the cemetery a second time. This parcel,
bordering the oldest part of the cemetery on the north, was purchased. It is located to the right of the second gate. Like Section 1, it too was laid out
in three tiers. Full lots were ten by twenty feet and originally sold for fifty dollars. Half lots were ten by ten feet and cost twenty-five dollars.
These inscriptions were read on November 4, 2000, by Patricia Morrow, the Windham Town Historian. Each row was read from left to right, starting at the
front of the cemetery.

Section 2 (oldest section)
According to page 406 of the History of Greene County, New York, with
Biographical Sketches of Its Prominent Men, published by J. B. Beers &
Co., 1884, reprinted by Hope Farm Press in 1969: "The present burial ground
in the village of Big Hollow was donated to the society at that place by Harry
Avery early in 1827, and consists of about three-fourths of an acre of ground.
The first person buried here was Mrs. Avery, the wife of the donor, in April
1827. The cemetery is kept in nice shape and is surrounded by a substantial
stone wall." Note that her gravestone says that Lydia, wife of Harry R.
Avery, died on April 26, 1826.
The deed from Harry R. Avery and Charlotte, his wife, and Alfred Gardner and
Hannah, his wife, of Windham, to Zalmon Hitchcock, Erastus T. Peck and Silas
Beach, Trustees of the Second Presbyterian Society in Windham, was recorded at
the Greene County Courthouse in Catskill, NY on February 12, 1838, in Liber Y of
Deeds at Page 309. At that time the land was already occupied by the Second
Presbyterian Society of Windham for a meeting house and yard, and contained
about half an acre.
These inscriptions were recorded in October and November 2000, by Patricia
Morrow, the Windham Town Historian, and supplemented by a list of inscriptions
compiled in the mid 1950s. This oldest section is located between the two
entrance gates. All rows were read from left to right beginning in the front of
the cemetery. Gravestones with just initials have been omitted unless there were
no other stones for that person.

his wife, Sarah "Sally" Ann Ham dau of Jacob C. & Catherine
(Parkman) Ham - b. 10 Jan 1817; d. 28 Jun 1894
Palmer & Sally Joslin were attended by a physician who failed to report
their deaths to the Windham Town Clerk. Delayed death certificates were filed on
15 Apr 1895 by their brother-in-law, Martin Ham, husband of Sally’s sister,
Malinda Ham. Unfortunately neither certificate states where they were buried.
They lived less than a mile from this cemetery, so it seems likely that this
would have been the most convenient place unless they were buried on their farm
or in the Windham Cemetery with their son, John M. Joslin.
