Kinghill Cemetery

Kinghill Cemetery
also known as the Losee Family Cemetery

The King Hill Cemetery is located in the town of Greenville, Greene County, New York.  Enclosed by a fence, it sits east and adjacent to the Surprise-Result Road which heads south from State Route 81.

The graves are positioned on both sides of a short road leading into the cemetery from west to east, creating north and south sections.  By the indication of the headstones, burials took place there from 1806-1967 with Simeon Losee's being the first grave.  A good number of the headstones of married women included their maiden names -- information which should be of value to genealogists.

The information recorded here does not represent the inscriptions verbatim but rather preserves in a more orderly method as much of the stones' data as it was possible to obtain (many stones are becoming illegible or are already too weathered to read).  The names are listed according to their position in the cemetery.  The sketch of the King Hill Cemetery delineates the north and south sides of the cemetery and further describes each row and the tombstones therein with numbers, thereby allowing the reader to locate the approximate site of any listed person's grave.

Explanation of the authors' marks and abbreviations:

1)  ( )  Parentheses indicate that the inscription was not legible and that the information recorded, if any, is an educated guess.

2)  [ ]  Brackets indicate an author's note to explain positions of graves or inscriptions and other known genealogical information.

3)   d. = died, y = years, m = months, and d = days, w = weeks.

Thanks are due to John Ryan of Westwood, New Jersey who assisted us in locating this cemetery where our ancestors rest, and to Raymond Beecher of the Greene County Historical Society who completed the information needed to publish this record.

Ed Hillicoss writes: My GGrandfather is buried in the King Hill Cemetery, his name was John Henry Reed, he was a resident of what is now Scutt Road, Greenville, NY. Leonard Borthwick Scutt was his Son-In-Law that purchased the plot, for the sum of $10.00. The burial spot would be ROW 11, North Side, # 3, on the map you have on the Palmer Cemetery Site. The Deed issued by the King Hill Cemetery Association, signed by Thompson K. Losee, President of the King Hill Cemetery Association and Witnessed by Elmer P. Flansburgh, Justice of the Peace, Deed issued 2 Sept 1922, states the plot is described as follows:

On the north by a vacant lot (still vacant). On the south by the plot of L. W. Hallock. On the west by the plot of H. L. Waldron. On the East by the fence extending north-south
