Johans Sax Family Cemetery

From, Volume #2, Cemetery Records of Old Burying Grounds in the Town of Catskill 1946-1969. Recorded May 16, 1965 by Dorothy and Walter Smith. Retyped by Celeste MacCormack.

An old Sax burying ground on the Saugerties Road (9W). The old house is now down but stood on the east side of the highway about three-quarters of a mile north of the Brick School House Road. The burying ground is on the first high ridge east of where the house stood, almost a half a mile. It is also on the same ridge as Post junk yard about 1/4 mile south. Plot is in a clump of trees in an open field that is worked. These names were obtained from the files of Mrs. Vedder and Mrs. Rossi. As dated above have been to burying ground and the stones of Maria Sax and Frederick Sax are now gone. The Paul and Johans Sax stones are crude cut by hand. Must be quite a few people buried here.

Paul Sax born Sept 18, 1762 died March 22, 1800

Johans Sax born March 1731 died Nov. 3, 1795.

The following two names are on one large stone:
Benjamin Sax died June 6, 1876 aged 81 yrs, 5 mo, 19 days.
Margaret Hover, wife of Benjamin Sax died May 1, 1831 aged 26 yrs, 2 mo, 17 days.

Elizabeth Wynkoop, wife of John P. Sax died July 16, 1834 aged 86 yrs, 8 mo, 6 days.

Maria Sax, daughter of John P. and Eliz., W. Sax died Jan 18, 1832 aged 11 mo (stone gone).

Frederick E. Sax, son of John P. Eliz. W. Sax died Dec. 8, 1833 aged 4 yrs, 10 mo, 6 days. (stone gone).

Do not see that Maria and Frederick Sax could be the son and daughter of Eliz. W. and John P. Sax, unless the death date of Eliz. Sax is wrong.

On the old map of 1856 and Beers 1867 map the place was owned by B. Sax.
