GERALD WINANS
Stiefel retiree

Gerald “GP” Winans, 71, of Preston Hollow, died Saturday, May 31 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital, Albany.

He was born in Livingston September 30, 1936, the son of the later Cecil and Dorothy (Engle) Winans.

He had retired from Stiefel Laboratory and had also worked for Ralston Purina in Voorheesville.

An avid hunter, trapper and fisherman, “GP” enjoyed the outdoors, camping and was a life member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the New York State Trappers Association. “GP” also served in the Army Reserve.

He will be remembered as a loving grandfather and family man, and a friend to all he met.

Surviving are his wife, Donna (Goodfellow); a daughter, Kimberly Winans; a son, Gregg Winans (Ani); six grandchildren, Timothy, Sarah, Kayla and Heather Rooney, and Jessica and Nicole Winans; and a greatgranddaughter, Halie Rooney.

Interment was in Brookside Cemetery, Preston Hollow.

WINIFRED KRAUS
Horticulturist

Winifred J. (Kent) Kraus, 74, died suddenly at her home in Odessa, FL., on Friday, May 23. 

She was born on September 5, 1933 to the late Stanley and Cora Kent of Hannacroix. 

She was married to Tony Kraus and raised her family in Narrowsburg, where she was a horticulturist. 

In the Medway area she was an active member of the Medway Fire Company Auxiliary and the Medway Congregational Church, and also sang in the church choir.

She later moved back to the Hannacroix area to take care of her mother and father until their final days, then moved to Odessa, Fl, to live with her youngest daughter.

Three brothers, David Kent of West Coxsackie and Ronald and John Kent of Hannacroix; two daughters, Leona Morse of Honesdale, PA, and Karen Dugan of Odessa, FL; and several nieces and nephews and five grandchildren survive her.

Interment is in the Medway Congregational Christian Church Cemetery on Sunday, June 29 at 2 p.m.

MARY M. KENNELLY
Homemaker

Mary M. Kennelly, 80, of Cornwallville, died Saturday, May 31 at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson.

Born in Limerick, Ireland, June 20, 1927, she was the daughter of the late John and Margaret (O’Donnell) Horrigan.

Mary was a homemaker and a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister.  She was a communicant of Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham.

Surviving are her two daughters, Beatrice Clappin (Philip) and Yvonne Fogarty (Mark); her two sons, Daniel Kennelly (Sharon) and Philip Kennelly (Edie); her sisters and brothers, Beatrice Mahoney, Ollie Horrigan, Sean Horrigan, Donald Horrigan, Evelyn Ambrose and Rita Finnerty.

Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband John Kennelly in 1997, and a sister and brothers, Bernadette, Patrick, Noel, Jay and Gerald.

Funeral services are Monday, June 9 at 10:15 a.m. from Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 a.m.  at Our Lady of Knock Shrine. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday, June 8 from 4 to 8 p.m.

Burial is in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, on Tuesday, June 10 at 1 p.m.

RICHARD L. KURTZ II
Freight conductor

Richard L .Kurtz II, 52, of Durham, died suddenly at his home on Friday, May 30.

He was born in Syracuse December 27, 1955, the son of the late Richard T. and Alice (Temple) Kurtz I.

Richard was a freight conductor for Conrail.  He loved hunting, fishing and his dogs.

Besides his parents, Richard was predeceased by an infant daughter, Eliza Kurtz.

Surviving are his four children, Richard T. Kurtz III, William K. Kurtz, Christine M. Kurtz and Kevin M. Haverly; a sister, Kathleen (Randy) Beam; a grandchild, Richard T. Kurtz; and a niece, Rebecca Beam.

A memorial service takes place at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Those who wish may contribute in Richard’s memory to the Town of Durham Ambulance.

JOSEPHINE GILIBERTO
Active with fire police

Josephine Giliberto, 85, of Westerlo, died Monday, June 9 Albany Medical Center Hospital following a long illness.

Josephine was born in New York City, February 15, 1923, the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine (West) Carter.

The family moved to Maspeth, LI, where Josephine attended grade school and graduated high school.

She married Patrick Giliberto and lived on the lower east side of Manhattan prior to moving to Copiague, LI, with their two sons.

Josephine and her husband Patrick moved to Westerlo 37 years ago.  She was an active member of the Westerlo Volunteer Fire Co. Fire Police for many years.  She also was a member of the Greenville American Legion Post #291 Auxiliary.

Surviving are a son, William Giliberto of Texas; two sisters, Margaret Kartina of Wilmington, NC, and Mary Jackson of Hempstead, NC; two brothers, Joseph Carter of Wilmington, NC, and Thomas Carter of Stoughton, MA; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are today, June 12, at 12:30 p.m. from Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville.  A Mass of Christian Burial is celebrated at 1 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, Greenville.

Friends may call at the funeral home prior to the service, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Interment is in the Greenville Cemetery.

CLIFFORD MUNKENBECK
Formerly of Freehold

Clifford Munkenbeck who lived in Freehold for some 34 years, died Monday, January 14 at the age of 99.

Born in Brooklyn November 27, 1908, Thanksgiving Day, to Alma and Francis Munkenbeck, he was one of six children, two boys and four girls.

As a young boy, he moved with his family to Bellmore, and in 1932 he was awarded a certificate for the completion of a two-year course in industrial mechanical engineering in the School of Science and Technology at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.

In the early 1940’s, he married his wife, Mildred, whom he met when they both worked briefly at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York.

            During World War II, he worked for U.S. Rubber in Providence, RI, as part of a team designing rubber rafts for the military.  In the later years, he joined his father and brother in their plating business in Bellmore.

During these years on Long Island, he often spent weekends and vacations in Freehold, where his parents had bought property, and his sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Amos Baldwin, had built a house.

Moving to this property permanently in 1969, and not yet ready to retire, he worked for a time for the Johannesen family in their business, Royal Metal Products, in Greenville center.

His wife died in 1958 and in 2003 he sold his home on Red Mill Road and moved into the Greenwood Apartments in Greenville.

The outdoor was his lifelong passion.  From his earliest years on Long Island, he was an avid fisherman.  Later, the Catskills offered streams for fishing and woodlands for hiking with his beloved dogs.  Throughout his life, gardening was his avocation.  A consummate gardener, he took great pride in his trees, shrubs and flowers. His vegetable gardens were a great source of joy; he especially eager to share his bountiful harvest of prizewinning beefsteak tomatoes with family and friends.

He has a large and loving family living primarily on the east coast and in the western United States.  His younger sister, Mabel Coha, and her husband, Alfred, live in Arizona.

EDWARD F. LOW
Decorated Navy vet

Edward F. Low, 81, of Cornwallville, formerly of Milton, died at his home on Thursday, June 12. 

He was born in Brooklyn March 20, 1927, the son of the late Fred and Elfreda (Schultz) Low.

Edward served in the Navy during World War II and received the American Theatre Medal, the Asia Pacific Medal and the Victory Medal.

He was an installer/repairman with New York Telephone Co. in Newburgh for 33 years.

Edward was a past commander of the Durham Valley American Legion Post #1416, past commander and life member of Tri-Town Memorial VFW Post #7229, a member of AMVets Post 2004 and a life member of the Telephone Pioneers.

He loved hunting, gardening, watching sports and the outdoors.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Doris (Skry) Low; two sons, Bruce Low (Carla) and Dale Low (Rebecca); two sisters, Gertrude Unger (Daniel) and Elaine McMullen (Ruel); two brothers, Fred Low and Robert Low (Margaret),  and two granddaughters, Emma and Anna Low.

Besides his parents, Edward was predeceased by a son, Wayne M. Low.

Burial with military honors was in the Cornwallville Cemetery.

MILDRED MARTIN
Horse lover

Mildred H. Martin, 91 of West Coxsackie, died Saturday, June 7 at home.

She was born in Bethlehem Center August 12, 1916, the daughter of the late Ford E. and Florence E. (DeForest) Hannay.

Florence loved horses, square dancing, camping and her great-grandsons.

Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Marion Martin Miller; granddaughter Melinda Martin; three great-grandsons, Steven Lutes, Dylan Smith and Caleb Maurer; and countless nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter W. Martin, and her son, Wendell J. Martin.

Arrangements were with Applebee Funeral Home, Delmar.

ANNE ANDERSON
Nurses’ aide

Anne M. Anderson, 61, of Greenville, died Sunday, June 22 at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson.

She was born in Brooklyn May 26, 1947, the daughter of the late Joseph and Jacqueline (Gargano) Saltalamacchia.

Anne was a nurses aide at St. Joseph’s Village and Kaaterskill Care.

She served on the advisory board of the Greenville FFA and loved traveling with the group.

Survivors include her husband, Carl E. Anderson Sr.; her four children, Carl E. Anderson Jr. and wife Vicky, Anne Allen and husband Bob, Jackie Anderson, and Joseph Anderson and wife Kim; a brother, Philip Salta and wife Ann Marie; and grandchildren Erik, Alex and Claudia Anderson, Kelly Anne Allen and Garrett Anderson.

Interment was in the Greenville Cemetery.

Those who wish may contribute in Anne’s memory to the Greenville FFA or the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 421 New Karner Road, Albany 12005.

JUDITH EILERTSEN
Born in Norway

Judity Eilertsen, 96, of Greenville, died Monday, June 16 at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn after a brief illness, only three weeks before her 97th birthday.

She was proud to call Norway her birthplace.  She was raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and moved to Greenville in 1970.

Survivors include her grandchildren and their spouses, Judi and Paul Kehoe of Delmar, John and Maureen Monkell of Pensacola, FL, Ken and Nobalee Monkell and Jackie and Chris Park of Greenville; and great-grandchildren Anne and Elaine Kehoe, Meredith and Matthew Monkell, Thomas, David, Brad and William Monkell, and Jason and Adam Park.  She also is sister/sister-in-law to Lillian Johannsen, Skip Johannesen, Morten and Margaret Johannesen and Karl Johannesen.

She was predeceased by her husband, Erling, in 1981, and her daughter, Linda Stevens, in 1955.

GREGORY FINKE
Bryant & Stratton grad

Gregory A. Finke, 23, of Durham, died suddenly on Sunday, June 15.

He was born in Staten Island April 22, 1985.

He was a graduate of Cairo-Durham High School and Bryant and Stratton, where he was employed at the time of his death.

Gregory loved going to movies and working on and with computers.  He loved his Pontiac Grand Am and was a friend to all he met.

Surviving are his mother, Darlene Finke; his father, Lawrence Mulcare; and sisters, Katie and Vanessa Mulcare.

Cremation took place at the Albany Rural Cemetery.

Arrangements were with Cunningham Funeral Home, Greenville.

JULIUS TRETICK
Worked at museums

Julius Tretick, 89, of Roanoke, VA, formerly of Westerlo and Alexandria, VA, died Sunday, June 22. 

Mr. Tretick served in the Marine Corps in World War II and the Korean Conflict.

For a number of years he was exhibits production chief for the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC. While living in Westerlo, he worked for the New York State Museum and Albany Institute of History and Art, followed by many years of self-employment in the sign business both in New York and Virginia.

Mr. Tretick was a member of Grace Baptist Temple.

Surviving is his son, Timothy B. Tretick of Woodbridge, VA and daughters, Marcy E. Harless and her husband Emory David of Radford, VA, Rebecca J. Byrd and husband David of Roanoke, VA, and Amy K. Watson and husband Paul of Greenville; eight grandchildren, D. Scott Harless and wife Kristie, Ashley Wall and husband Chad, Amanda Harless, Joshua Jensen and wife Naomi, Sarah and Jaimy Jensen, and David and Morgan Watson; six great-grandchildren, Will and Andrew Harless, Madeline and Caroline Wall, and Carter and Reagan Jensen; and numerous nieces an nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Pauline (Wood) Tretick.

Burial was in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
