Formerly of Medusa
Margaret B. Deatrick, 87, of Greenville, SC, married to the late Robert S. Deatrick for 62 years, passed away at the Brushy Creek Cottages in Greer, SC, on Thursday, December 20. 2007.
Mrs. Deatrick formerly resided at The Gardens at Eastside in Greenville, SC. Born in New York City on April 29, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Walter D. and Elizabeth (Deagan) Butterworth.
The Deatricks were residents of Dumont, NJ, for 35 years and in their retirement years divided their time between Medusa, NY and Naples, FL. Mrs. Deatrick became a resident of Greenville, SC in 2004 and was a parishioner of St. Mary Magdalene Church in Simpsonville, SC.
She is survived by her children, Nancy D. LaRocca (John) of Medusa, Marilyn D. Knoblauch (Peter) of Greenville, SC and William C. Deatrick (Kathleen) of Aurora, IL.; nine grandchildren, Michael Knoblauch (B.J.) of Georgia, Patricia Knoblauch, Scott Knoblauch, David Knoblauch (Lori) all of South Carolina, Mark LaRocca (Nina) and Elizabeth Whiteman (Robert) of New York, Christine Markey (Evan) and John Deatrick of California and Meghan Deatrick of Illinois; great-grandchildren John, Katie and Matthew Knoblauch, Sophie and Ellie Whiteman, Kibo and Kyesa LaRocca, and Rachel, Cole and Hannah Knoblauch; a sister, Mildred Mercadante; and a brother, Walter D. Butterworth.
A sister, Lillian Schmidt, predeceased her.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial followed by interment in the Medusa cemetery in the early spring.

HAROLD HENDERSON
Driver
Harold P. Henderson Sr., 77, of East Durham, died Thursday, December 27, 2007 at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany.
He was born in Queens December 13, 1930, the son of the late Arthur and Ruth (Lambrechts) Henderson.
Harold served in the Air Force during the Korean War.
He was a truck driver and drove for various trucking companies, one of which was Ryder Trucking in Selkirk. He was an excellent mechanic as well.
Harold was a member of the Catskill Elks Club. He was community minded and took care of his neighbors and their needs. He enjoyed traveling and was known for his organizational skills.
Surviving are his wife, Mary (Birk) Henderson; his three sons, Harold P. Henderson Jr. and wife Linda of Greenville, Arthur F. Henderson and wife Shirley of Plainfield, CT, and Patrick J. Henderson and wife Patricia of Glenville; four brothers, Arthur, Frederick, George and Paul Henderson; two sisters, Ruth Cawley and Violet Statham; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Interment was in the Cornwallville Cemetery.
Arrangements were with Cunningham Funeral Home, Greenville.

ROSEMARY MCDONNELL
Active in community
Rosemary McDonnell, 71, of Durham, died at the home of her daughter in Poughkeepsie on Sunday, December 23, 2007.
She was born in County Meath, Ireland, April 27, 1936, the daughter of the late James and Annie (Rehill) Finnegan.
An active lady, she enjoyed playing golf, was a doll collector and loved to garden and knit. She also was active in the community as a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Michael J. Quill Irish Cultural and Sports Centre and Our Lady of Knock Council Knights of Columbus Auxiliary.
Surviving are her husband, Francis “Frank” McDonnell; two sons, Jim McDonnell (Denise) and Tom McDonnell; two daughters, Mary Amendola (Victor) and Jacqueline Reed (Patrick); nine grandchildren; four sisters; and four brothers.
Burial was in the Winston Cemetery, East Durham.

Adelaide M. Rupp, 95, of Delmar, formerly of Westerlo and Callicoon Center, died Tuesday, December 18 at Albany Medical Center.
She was born in Brooklyn April 8, 1912, the daughter of the late George and Harriet (Morrison) Freund.
The family relocated to New Jersey, where Adelaide was raised. Following her primary education she completed business school and became a secretary at the National Commercial Investment Co. in New York City.
Adelaide and her husband William resided in Westerlo for 32 years after moving from Sullivan County. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Westerlo during that time.
Survivors include her daughter, Adelaide Devenpeck and husband Edgar of Delmar; two sisters, Mildred Stewart of Westwood, NJ, and Ruth Tichenor of Venice, FL; three grandchildren, Daryl Devenpeck Drahos of Spring City, PA, Duane G. Devenpeck and wife Diana of Sullivan County and Dorian Devenpeck of Fort Myers, FL; two great-grandchildren, Danielle and Amanda Drahos; and 22 nieces and nephews.
Adelaide was predeceased by her husband, William J. Rupp, and a son, George
Rupp.
Burial will
be in the Callicoon Center Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Gloria C. Vasta, 80, of Climax, died at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson on Sunday, December 23.
She was born August 10, 1927 in Hempstead, the daughter of the late John and Edna (Fisher) Freeth.
Gloria was employed as a home health aide in Catskill.
A 50-year area resident, she was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in
Catskill, the Athens American Legion Auxiliary, the Catskill
Senior
Citizens and the Catskill Bowling League.
She enjoyed playing cards and loved flowers and vegetables.
Survivors include her husband, Vincent J. Vasta; two sons, John and wife Celine

WILLIAM WINANS
WWII Army veteran
William “Bill” Winans, 94, of East Durham, died Saturday, December 28 at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson.
He was born in Preston Hollow June 4, 1913, the son of the late Coral and Cora (Young) Winans.
Bill served in the Army during World War II and was discharged as a staff sergeant. He was a platoon sergeant serving 11 months overseas in France, Germany and Austria and received three Battles Stars and a Distinguished Unit Citation.
A lifelong carpenter, he was well known for his meticulous construction and built many homes in the Albany and Greene County area.
He was a member of the Tri-Town Memorial VFW Post 7229 and a former member of the Durham Valley American Legion Post 1416.
In his early years, Bill enjoyed small game hunting. He also was an avid reader of history and biographies, and known for his love of skiing.
Survivors include his companion of 24 years, Louise Siegler; a son, John Winans of Catskill; a daughter, Gail Puliafico (Fred) of Glenville; three grandchildren, Michael, Stephen and Kristen Puliafico; three great-grandchildren, Kayleigh, Alexandria and Christopher Puliafico; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Irene (Brand) Winans; two brothers, Charles and Alan Winans; and three sisters, Vivian Bates, Myra Rivenburg and Jean Sankowski.
Funeral services are today, January 3, at 11 a.m. from Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville. Burial is in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Vincent C. Dowd, 89, of Fort Pierce, FL, died Sunday, December 30.
He was born in County Leitrim, Ireland, September 15, 1918.
He had been a resident of Fort Pierce for 12 years, having moved there from Greenville. He had retired from the New York City Transit Authority, where he had been a foreman/instructor.
He was a member of the Greenville Irish American Club, the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Knock Council in East Durham and St. Mark’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Dowd of Fort Pierce; two sons, Vincent Dowd of Annapolis, MD, and John Dowd of Woodbridge, VA; seven stepchildren, Rose Leahy and Michael Horan of New York City, John Horan of West Haven, CT, Maureen Riordan of Monroe, Edward Horan of Chester, Theresa Paschenko of Monroe and Susan Horan of Cairo; and 20 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Beatrice, and a daughter, Mary Dowd.
Services are Friday, January 4 at 10:30 a.m. from Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81 Greenville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church.
Calling is today, January 3, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The Knights of Columbus conduct a service at 7:30 p.m.
Interment is in the Greenville Cemetery.

JAMES BRESLIN
Formerly of Greenville
James Breslin, 90, of Melbourne, FL, formerly of Greenville, died at his home on Monday, January 7.
He was born June 30, 1917 in Brooklyn, the son of the late Michael and Agnes T. (Duffy) Breslin.
James served his country during World War II in the Army. Following his time in the service he was employed as a power maintainer for the MTA in New York City until his retirement in June 1972.
Surviving are his two daughters, Margaret Mary Cameron and Teresa A. Brennan.
James was predeceased by his wife, Mary M. (Kenny) Breslin in November 1984.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial is celebrated Friday, January 11 at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, Greenville. Interment follows in the Greenville Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

BURDETTE GRIFFIN
Former resort owner
Burdette E. Griffin, 102, of Greenville, died at his home on Monday, January 7.
He was born in Greenville October 25, 1905, the son of the late Burdette S. and Rhue (Evans) Griffin.
He was one of 11 children, eight of whom lived well past retirement age.
He married Evangeline Snyder of Medusa on Christmas Day 1927. She predeceased him in 1966.
Burdette purchased acreage on the Greene/Albany County line in 1934. He was a farmer and entrepreneur, building the resort known as Balsam Shade Farm.
Burdette enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and going to family events. He enjoyed going to cattle auctions once a week to by and sell cattle. He also enjoyed playing poker with his Friday night buddies and in later years he loved trips to Mohegan Sun with his best friend and companion of 40 years, Mary Cornell.
Surviving are his sons, Edward Griffin (Mary) of Greenville; two granddaughters, Jill DeGiovine (Len) and Keri Pettingill (Marvin); a grandson, Kyle Griffin; four great-grandchildren, Ian, Aaron and Noel DeGiovine and Vangie Van Auken (Ed); four great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Elizabeth, Edward and Samuel Van Auken; a sister-in-law, Roberta Griffin; several nieces and nephews; and longtime companion, Mary Cornell.
Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Griffin; brothers, Lewis and Max Griffin; sisters Myra Booth, Elizabeth Burnett, Ruth Eisert, Margaret Feugman and Stella Abrams; and a granddaughter, Darcy Correia.
A graveside service will take place in the Greenville Cemetery at a later date.

World War II veteran
John P. Spadaro, 88, formerly of Ravena, died Monday, December 17 after a long and courageous battle with failing health.
He was born February 26, 1919, the son of the late Thomaso and Fortunata Spadaro.
John was a World War II Army veteran. Before his retirement, he worked many years for John Hancock Insurance.
He was a member of the Sons of Norway and the Ravena VFW.
Survivors include his son, John Spadaro and wife Linda of North Carolina; grandchildren Lori Sariti of Virginia and Teresa Leiser of North Carolina; great-grandchildren Emily and Joshua Leiser, sister-in-law Rose Spadaro; great-nephew Chuck Martinez; several other nieces and nephews; and special friend Ruth Jones of Greenville.
John was predeceased by his wife, Ruth (Cummings) Spadaro, brothers Anthony, Charles, Ralph and Joseph, and sister Theresa.
A graveside service and interment of his cremains takes place in the spring.

Marie Katherine Nauman Broadhurst, 78 of New Baltimore, passed away December 31, 2007 at home. She was the wife of Kenneth E. Broadhurst Sr., who passed away March 19, 1989. Marie was a member of the New Baltimore Reformed Church.
Survivors include her children, Catherine Kelly of TX, Arlene McKeon of New Baltimore, Valerie (Dennis) Vandeslice of New Baltimore, Kenneth (Peg) Broadhurst Jr. of MI, Jeffrey Broadhurst of New Baltimore and Cathe (Bob) Emery of Coeymans; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; and her sister Eleanor Boehlke of AK. Marie was predeceased by her sister Frances Walker.
Funeral services were held at the New Baltimore Reformed Church.
Services were under the direction of the Babcock Funeral Home, Ravena.

A friend to all
Lawrence “Larry” C. Chichester, 82, of Greenville, NY passed away suddenly at his home on January 11, 2008. He was born in the Town of Broome on June 19, 1925 son of the late Coit and Molly (Lemon) Chichester.
A member of the Operating Engineers Local 106 Albany, NY, he was a heavy equipment operator. Larry enjoyed working and operating his equipment, and after his retirement he couldn’t wait to help a friend in need of his expertise. He was always doing something, “always on the go” and he enjoyed his grandchildren.
Active in the Masonic Lodge he was a member and Past Master of James Austin Lodge #557 F. & A.M., Patron of the Maranatha Valley Chapter #38, O.E.S. for 34 years, Present Associate Grand Sentinel of Grand Chapter, Past District Grand Lecturer of O.E.S. Greene-Ulster District, Past District Deputy Grand Master of Greene-Ulster District F. & A.M. of the Grand Lodge, State of NY, Member of Royal Arch Masons and Past High Priest, was also a Shriner and President of Past Masters Unit of Cyprus Shrine. He was also charter member of the Cairo-Durham Elks Lodge.
Surviving is his wife Sally (Reed) Chichester, a son Luman Chichester, four daughters, Robin Crist (Richard), Doreen Hedlund (Nils), Judy Bartholomew and Helen Shunman (Randy), 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, a brother George Chichester, a sister Margaret Zaharris and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four sisters, Ester Dunn, Mary Young, Gladys Cain and Dorothy Chichester, and five brothers, Edison, Arthur, Maynard, Ross and Austin (Barney) Chichester.
Services were under direction of Cunningham Funeral Home.

Served well
James Collins, 71 years, of Long Beach, NY, passed away at his home on January 8, 2008. He was born in New York City, NY on February 13, 1936, son of the late Patrick and Anne (Garvey) Collins. He served his country during the Korean War in the US Navy and later in the coast Guard Reserve. James was a fireman, skilled in Fire and Rescue with the NYC Fire Department until his retirement.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham, NY. Interment followed in the Greenville cemetery.
Services were under the direction of Cunningham Funeral Home.

Gregory M. Murphy, 67, of Greenville, NY, formerly of Jersey City, NJ, passed away on January 12, 2008. He was born in New York City on April 16, 1940.
He was the beloved husband of the late Joanne (Moll) Murphy. His loving life partner Ginger Passaro of Greenville, NY survives him. Loving father of three daughters; Dana McManus (Daniel) of Howell, NJ, Lynda Angrosina (David) of Brick, NJ and Joanne Panico of Jackson, NJ, devoted grandfather of nine; Meghan, Gregory, Dylan, Matthew, Kristen, Michael, Thomas, Amy and Maggie Rose. Dear brother of Bryan Murphy (Maureen) of Durham, NY and the late Brendan Murphy (Jo-Ann) of Atkinson, NH.
Funeral Mass was at Our Lady of Knock Shrine, Route 145, Durham, NY. Interment was in the Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, NJ.

Burdette E. Griffin, 102, of Greenville, died at his home on Monday, January 7, 2008.

STELLA M. ATWOOD
School bus driver
Stella M. Atwood, 91, of Greenville died Wednesday, January 16 at her home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
She was born November 2, 1916 in Brooklyn, the daughter of the late Joseph and Antonia (Ozga) Babula.
She graduated from Cherry Valley School and lived in Cooperstown with her family and husband, John M. Kubis, who died in 1956. She remarried in 1961 to Francis W. Atwood and moved to Clifton Park. He died in 1968.
Mrs. Atwood was a school bus driver for the Shenendehowa Central School District, retiring in 1981.
She was a homemaker, an avid gardener and enjoyed bowling, traveling and spending time with her family. She was an active longtime member of the Shenedehowa Senior Citizen Center.
Survivors include her daughter, Barbara White and husband Robert of Canton; her son, Richard Kubis of Endicott; four grandchildren, Katherine Palladino and husband Andrew of Greenville, Karen Mori and husband Lloyd of Plantation, FL, and Laurie Kubis and Jonathan Kubis, both of Endicott; and two great-grandchildren, Laura and Michael Mori.
Besides her parents and husbands, she was predeceased by a brother, Frank Babula, and a daughter-in-law, Gloria Kubis.
Interment is in the spring in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Cooperstown.

Margaret C. Dombek, 92, of East Durham, died at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson on Wednesday, January 16.
She was born in Brooklyn April 14, 1915, the daughter of the late Walter and Lina (Behrman) Connallon.
A lifelong homemaker, she loved to garden and to decorate her home for the holidays. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Oak Hill.
Surviving are her daughter, Judy Fremgen of Cairo; three granddaughters, Dawn Adams, Lisa Whitbeck and Melanie Amoroso; and six great-grandchildren, Andy Whitbeck, Tyler Fremgen, Kerrie Adams, Tim Whitbeck, Meredith Adams and Noelle Amoroso.
Interment is in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mauella P. (Patricia) Perkowski, 84, of Route 32, Greenville, died Sunday, January 20 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany.
Born in Greenville, Patricia was the daughter of the late Clarence and Manuella Boomhower and was one of the last true Greenville citizens remaining.
She was a homemaker and assisted in running her husband’s business of 50-plus years.
She was a charter and life member of the Greenville Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary and a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church.
In her early years she maintained a farm with her husband and always possessed great baking skills. Her family often looked forward to her annual Thanksgiving meal.
Surviving is her husband of 66 years, Felix J. Perkowski; son William of Athens; daughter Judith Van Amburgh (Wayne) of Castleton; grandchildren Dawn Varraro, William Perkowski Jr., Brooke Mabb, Mary Perkowski, Megan Van Amburgh and Ryan Van Amburgh; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four nieces; and a nephew.
She was predeceased by her brother, William Boomhower, and her sister, Marjorie Babcock.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 24 at Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville.
Interment is in the Greenville Cemetery, weather permitting.
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday, January 25 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Katherine “Kate” Rafferty, 100, formerly of Greenville, died January 28 at Eden Park Health Care Center, Catskill.
She was born in County Leitrim, Ireland, October 27, 1907, the daughter of the late John and Katherine (McWeeney) Travers.
Kate was a shipping service clerk for American News Co., New York City, until she retired.
She was a member of the Greenville Irish American Club and the Our Lady of Knock Council #6439 Knights of Columbus Auxiliary.
Surviving are two sisters-in-law, Annie Travers of Astoria and Rockland County, and Kathleen McElory of Co. Tyrone, Ireland; nieces May Marino and husband John of Astoria, Kathleen Whitney of Rockland County and Kathleen Carle of Boise, ID; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and a large extended family in Ireland.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Rafferty, in 1972, brothers Myles and Thomas Travers and sisters Nellie Gihooley and Mary Durivou.
Funeral services are Friday, February 1 at 8:30 a.m. from Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville. A Mass of Christian Burial is celebrated at 9 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church.
Calling is today, January 31, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Long Island National Cemetery, Pinelawn.

ELIZABETH CORTESE
Bryant’s employee
Elizabeth Cortese, 41, of Catskill, died January 22 at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson.
She was born in Albany, the daughter of Phillip Cortese and Ethelda (Proper) Lesnic.
She worked in many local businesses, the bakery in Bryant’s Supermarket, Extra-Mart, Shop Rite in Catskill and McDonald’s in Cairo.
Besides her parents, surviving are her daughter, Heather Fahrenkopf; two sons, Dustin Fahrenkopf and Phillip Cortese; a sister, Victoria Arnold; a brother Patrick Kennealy; three grandsons, Jose Cortese, Phillip Cortese Jr. and Nicholas Burroughs; and a granddaughter, Serenity Cortese.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her dear friend, Charlie Griffin.
Spring interment is in the Westerlo Central Cemetery.
Arrangements were with A.J. Cunningham Funeral Homes Inc., Greenville.

WILLIAM THERRIEN SR.
Racecar driver
William E. “Wild Bill” Therrien Sr, 86, of South Westerlo, died January 23 at Kaaterskill Care in Catskill.
He was born in Selkirk on June 4, 1921, the son of the late Emile and Irene (Halsdorf) Therrien.
"Wild Bill” enjoyed his years as a racecar driver and was proud to be the first feature race winner at Lebanon Valley Speedway when it opened on June 28, 1953. He was honored and inducted into the Speedway Hall of Fame on his 80th birthday.
Bill was also well known for his years of driving truck for Post brothers Auto Parts.
Surviving are his children, Irene Sanders (Steve) of Midland, TX, Wlliam E. Therrien Jr. and Wayne Therrien (Rebecca) of South Westerlo and Nobalee Monkell (Kenneth) of Greenville; grandchildren Tina and Chris Jauz, Mark Sanders, Janelle and James Bucci, Brenna Therrien (fiance Robert Debuc), Michael Acker, Rebecca, Adam, Wayne and Derrick Therrien, and Thomas David, Brad and William Monkell; great-grandchildren Cooper and Avery Jauz and Carmella Bucci; a brother, Emile Therrien (Pat); a sister, Elizabeth Scarcella; a sister-in-law, Louella Revette; a brother-in-law, Matthew Breitenbach (Ann); and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, John Therrien, brothers-in-law Frank Scarcella and Donald Revette, and his former wife Madeline Reddick.
Interment was in the Greenville Cemetery.
