Ethyl (Bone) Hoose
Ethel Marie Hoose
loved life and had a strong belief in God and the hereafter. She was kind,
humble and non-judgmental, and had a great sense of humor.
Hoose, 64, who
lived in Cairo and Athens for many years and, most recently was a winter
resident of Orange City, FL, died Saturday, March 5 of cancer.
She was born in
Ellenville December 10, 1940, the daughter of the late Russell and Rachel
(Newman) Bone.
Hoose was raised
in Cairo and was well know throughout the area.
“Her smile,
good humor, strong spirit and unconditional love won over many hearts,” said
youngest sister Patricia Cominos. “She was always a social butterfly. She
loved being around large groups of people and entertaining them, and being
entertained.”
Though Hoose
never graduated from Cairo Central School, she was always welcomed to the alumni
dinners. She made it many years, except last year, when something else came up,
her sister said.
Hoose loved
traveling, bingo, the New York Yankees and the television game show
“Jeopardy.” She also was an Elvis Presley fan who at one time owned every
one of his albums. Her biggest thrill was a trip to the King’s Memphis estate,
Graceland.
Cominos said she
had considered sending her sister a life-sized cutout of Elvis for her birthday
last year, but instead opted for a poster, since space was limited at her
sister’s Florida home. That poster was on the wall in the nursing home where
Hoose spent her last days.
Hoose was a hard
worker and was employed by American Thermostat in South Cairo for many years,
while raising her five children. In later years, she worked for Community Action
of Greene County, and after moving to Florida, she volunteered as a hospice
worker at Deland Hospital.
While living in
Athens, she became active in the Federated Church of Athens and was a member of
the choir.
“She was
spiritual. She believed in God very strongly,” Cominos said. “If you got
right with God your life would be good, and if you didn’t get right with God
your life would never be good.”
She said Hoose
also was empathetic about other people’s problems and very giving. On
Thanksgiving, she said, Hoose would welcome strangers to her table for a meal.
Cominos said
older sister, nicknamed “Sissy,” was a pleasure to grow up with. “She’d
always get herself into trouble somehow. Some days were like watching a Lucy
show, only she wasn’t Ethel, she was Lucy.”
Young Patty and
others would play with a neighbor’s geese and ducks on Jerome Avenue in Cairo
and then pass on by. When Ethel would tag along, the geese got up their dander
and would bite and chase her. “She’d run home screaming,” her sister said.
Cominos, six
years younger, taught her sister a thing or two, including how to correctly tie
her shoes. “She was doing it the shortcut way and they’d fall open all the
time,” said Cominos. “She used to laugh when I reminded her of it.”
Hoose also taught
her sister important life lessons. “…She was a teacher in her own way. Over
the years she helped teach me to love people unconditionally, how to forgive and
how to be your own person without sitting in judgment of others.”
Survivors include
her children, John and Charles Hoose, Margaret Barker and Loretta McDonald, all
of Florida, and Donna Fox of Utah; two sisters, Theresa “Tena” Morrison of
Homosassa, FL, and Patricia Cominos of Catskill; two brothers, Gerald Bone of
Knoxville, TN, and John Bone of Tucson, AZ; 13 grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; the Robinson family of Athens,
with whom she made her home for many years; and a dear friend, John Hallenbeck
of Athens.
A granddaughter,
Sara Rachel Hoose, predeceased her.
A memorial
service takes place today, March 10, at 6 p.m. at the Federated Church of
Athens, 18 North Franklin Street. A service is planned in Florida on Saturday,
March 12.
A Private service
takes place in the spring in the Cairo Cemetery, where she will be buried near
her mother and infant granddaughter
