JOHN S STEMPEL, JR.

Greenville - John S. Stempel, Jr., (89) of Greenville, NY formerly of East Berne, NY passed away at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn on March 1, 2007. He was born in Newark, NJ on Jan. 9, 1918 son of the late John and Teriza Stempel. John had a Dairy Farm and was employed by the Town of Berne Highway Dept. He was elected the Highway Superintendent for the Town of Berne and worked for the highway dept. for 37 years retiring in 1989. He was also a member of the East Berne Vol. Fire Co. for 25 years. He and His wife traveled in their motor home and spent the winter months in FL. He loved to work in his garage and was known as a “Mr. Fix It” and enjoyed working on small engines.

Surviving are his wife Mamie (Weis) Stempel, five children, Dorothy Fisher (Doug), Mary Stempel, Robert Stempel (Audra), Virginia Krug (Robert), Sheri Cucuruto (Lance) his step-children, Shirley Bryan (William), Arlene Lutz (William), Vicki Palmer (John), Lori Manning (Jerry) and Randolph Mahne (Michelle) also two brothers, Rudolph and Patrick Stempel, 5 grandchildren, 14 step-grandchildren and several great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Veronica Stempel.

Friends may call at the Cunningham Funeral Home on Sunday 2 to 4pm. The East Berne Vol. Fire Co. will conduct services at the funeral home on Sunday at 4pm. Graveside service will be in the spring at the Oak Hill Cemetery. ELEANOR JACOB 

Potter Hollow - Eleanor Jacob (80) of Potter Hollow, NY passed away at St. Peter’s Hospital on Feb. 26, 2007. She was born in New York City on July 1, 1926 daughter of Herman and Elsie Gronwaldt. A life long homemaker she was pre-deceased by her husband David Jacob, Jr. A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she will be missed by her family and many friends.  

Surviving are two sons, Arthur Jacob (Rosalie) of Union City, NJ, Douglas Jacob (Donna) of Earlton, NY, two daughters, Lorraine Dowdall (James) of Middleburg, NY, Kathleen Albertson (Charles) of Hensonville, NY, 11 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and a brother Richard Presedo, of FL. 

Funeral services were held on Fri. 8pm at the Cunningham Funeral Home, Greenville. Friends were invited to call at the funeral home on Fri. 2 to 8pm prior to the service. Spring interment will be in the Potter Hollow Cemetery.

EDWARD USHER 

Westerlo – Edward Usher, 81, of Westerlo, NY passed away at St. Peter’s Hospital on Feb. 28, 2007. A veteran of the US Army he was a retired History teacher having retired in 1983 from G.C.S.

Surviving are his wife, Gloria (Sibek) Usher, a daughter Margaret Usher and a grand daughter Jennifer Jusino.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Church, Greenville, NY on March 15, at 3pm. Interment will be in the Saratoga National Cemetery.

ANN K. MAIKIS

Durham, NY - Ann K. Maikis, 90, of Durham, NY, where she lived since 1975, died Sunday, March 4th at her residence in Fishkill. She was born May 6, 1916 in the Bronx and was the daughter of the late William and Mae Higgins Ford.

Ann was a communicant of Our Lady of Knock Roman Catholic Church in Durham and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary in Durham.

While living in New Hyde Park, Ann was employed as a crossing guard for the Nassau County Police Department.

Ann was the widow of Rudolph Maikis, who predeceased her on January 15, 1999. She is survived by two daughters, Anne Bracken of Stormville, NY, and Denise Young of Natick, MA; three sons, Rudolph Maikis and his wife, Barbara of Yuma, AZ, Richard Maikis and his wife, Rosemary, of Huntington, LI, and Kevin Maikis and his wife, Debbie, of Gilbert, AZ; one brother, Arthur Ford of Islip, LI; 14 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Calling hours were held on Wednesday, March 7th from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Home, 900 St. 82, Hopewell Junction, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 8th at 10am at St. Columba Church, Hopewell Junction, NY. Spring burial will take place at the Oakhill Cemetery, Durham, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, Rt. 145, East Durham, NY 12422 or Hospice Inc., 374 Violet Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.

AMEDEO “BART” DIBARTOLOMEO

Hannacroix – Amedeo “Bart” DiBartolomeo of Hannacroix entered eternal life after a brief illness on Monday March 5, 2007. Amedeo, 69, was born in New York City and had lived in Hannacroix for seven years.

Bart has a Masters Degree in special education and worked as a shop and technology teacher for the Sachem School District in Holbrook, NY until his retirement in 1993. He had coached the Police Athletic League and Little League on LI and in Hannacroix he worked on the annual New Baltimore Ag Fest.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth DiBartolomeo of Hannacroix; children, Joanne (Todd) Vogel of Ravena, Donna DiBartolomeo of CA, Robert (Kathy) DiBartolomeo of Troy, Daniel DiBartolomeo of LI and Kathleen (Ryan) English of Middleburg; 3 grandchildren; and sister Marie Petrik of OH.

Funeral services will be held 2pm Thursday, March 8th at St. Mary’s Church, Coxsackie. Burial will take place in the spring. Friends were invited to call at the Babcock Funeral Home, Ravena on Wednesday from 6 to 8pm. In lieu of flowers contributions to St. June Children’s Hospital would be appreciated.

DONALD E. (TONY) STROUD

Coxsackie – Donald E. (Tony) Stroud, age 57 years, of 30 Whitbeck Street, Village of Coxsackie, died suddenly March 1, 2007, at his residence.

He was born in Coxsackie, NY April 7, 1949, and was the son of the late Walter and Florence (Mattice) Stroud.

Funeral services took place Tuesday, at 3:00pm at The W.C. Brady’s Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion Street, Coxsackie, with Rev. Retta Lykens, Pastor, officiating.

Interment will take place in the springtime with full military honors in the family plot of the Chestnut Lawn Cemetery, New Baltimore.

He served his country in Vietnam in the United States Marine Corps., he was a member of the The V.F.W. in Catskill, a member of Hose Co. #3 of Coxsackie, he was employed by the C.S.X. Railroad since 1974.

He loved camping and the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Diane E. Jacobs Stroud of Coxsackie, two sons Jayson of Coxsackie and Daniel Stroud of Ravena, three daughters Surena Jacobs, Sherry (Stroud) Santiago and Virginia Stroud, both of Coxsackie, also survived by three brothers Carl Mattice of Kingston, Walter Stroud of Louisiana, and Kenneth Stroud of Climax, a sister Virginia Stroud of Cairo, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his sister Gloria Heath.

Relatives and friends were cordially invited to attend calling hours at the W.C. Brady’s Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion Street, Coxsackie, NY on Tuesday from 1-3pm.

JAMES P. WALSH 

Greenville – James Patrick Walsh, age 82 of Greenville, died Saturday, March 10 at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn following a long illness.

Mr. Walsh was born in County Kilkenney, Ireland on November 17, 1924 to the late Patrick and Julia Brennan Walsh. He served in the Irish Army during World War II and later immigrated to the United States. He was employed by CoEdison in Manhattan as a lineman until his retirement when he moved to the area.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Regen Walsh of Greenville; his brother William Walsh, and four sisters; Elsie Barry, Kit Sparling, Sheila Powers, and Birdie Wells, all of England; as well as many nieces and nephews; sister-in-law Mrs. Bill (Elaine) Behrens and cousins Richard and Mary Ann Peters of Athens. In addition to dear friends John Horan of Fishkill and John Delaney of Ireland.

Private cremation was conducted on Monday at the Albany Rural Crematorium with a committal service in the Town of Catskill Cemetery in the Spring under the direction of the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill.

ELIZABETH ROBINSON

Cairo – Elizabeth “Betty” Robinson, 81, of Cairo, died Saturday, March 10, 2007, at Eden Park Health Care Center in Catskill.

Born Jan. 31, 1926 in Cementon, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Agnes Fountain Merritt.

Survivors include a son, David F. Robinson, of Cairo; three daughters, Linda Hallock of South Cairo, Janet Robinson of Cairo and Sonia LaForge of South Cairo; two sisters, Marion Lucas of Catskill and Ruth Thorne of Saugerties; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick L. Robinson, on Aug. 5, 1997; three brothers, Percy, Arnold and Charles Merritt; and a sister, Dorothy Thorne.

Calling hours were 4 to 8pm Tuesday at the Traver and McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Funeral services were held 10am Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Diana Freeman, rector of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church of Catskill, officiating.

Interment followed at Catskill Rural Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Columbia-Greene, 47 Liberty St., Catskill, NY 12414.

YVONNE GIFFORD 

New Baltimore, NY – Yvonne P. (Webber) Gifford, 79, a resident of New Baltimore entered eternal life on Monday March 12, 2007 after a long illness with Heart disease. Yvonne was born on July 5, 1927. Daughter of the late Watson and Anna Webber and 1 1945 graduate of Bethlehem Central High School.

She was surrounded by her loving family while in the care of Home Hospice. Now reunited with predeceased loving husband Albert Gifford and daughter Judy Davis (Ballew).

Loving and dedicated mother of David (Carolyn) Gifford, Nancy (Sol) Foro, Debbie Van Amerongen (Nick), Steve Gifford, Patty (Tom) Wilsey. Grandmother of Kim, Manni, Jeff, Lori, Shari, Jessica, David, John, Ken, Melissa and Bryan. With 9 Great Grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Yvonne will be remembered for her thoughtful, giving, generous spirit.

Calling hours will be at the Babcock Funeral Home, Ravena, Saturday, March 17 from 2 to 6.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ravena Rescue Squad.

PETER M. KENNEDY

East Berne – Peter M. Kennedy, 27, died on Friday, March 23, 2007 at Albany Medical Center after a sudden illness. Peter was born on April 12, 1979, the son of Barbara A. Kennedy of East Berne and Kevin C. Kennedy of Selkirk. He was a graduate of Berne-Knox-Westerlo Central School and SUNY Cobleskill. He was employed at Patriot Glass in Schenectady. Peter was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He loved to ride his four wheelers and loved his Ford Mustangs.

He in addition to his parents is survived by; a sister, Jamie Lynn; his fiancée, Lisa Cole; his maternal grandmother, Shirley Roney Crews; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Kennedy; his great aunt Barbara A. Genter; his step-mother, Bonnie Kennedy; his step-brother, John A. and step-sister Jamie L. Pelletier, aunts, uncles, cousins and many, many special friends as well as a very special adopted grandmother, Annie Dippolito.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 8pm at the Fredendall Funeral Home, Altamont. Calling hours were prior to the service at the funeral home from 3-8pm. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Peter can be sent to Key Bank. Altamont to help cover his expenses or to the East Berne Fire Co., East Berne, NY 12059. At a date to be announced there will be a memorial 4wheel ride to scatter his cremains over High Point.

PHILIP STEWART 

Westerlo – Philip Stewart (92) of Westerlo, NY passed away at the St. Peter’s Hospice Inn in Albany, NY on March 19, 2007. He was born in Albany, NY on March 1, 1915, son of the late Clinton and Lottie (Sherman) Stewart. A long time farmer on the family farm (now the Boone Farm) until a farm accident caused him to retire from farming. He joined the Albany County Sheriff’s Dept. and served as a deputy sheriff for 19 years. A life long member of the First Baptist Church of Westerlo serving the church well in several different positions. He was pre-deceased by his wife Dellite (Mackey) Stewart and a sister Rita Stewart.

Surviving are his daughter JoAnn Garry, two grandsons, Robert & Steven Garry, two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Eve Garry.

A memorial service was held Friday March 23, 7pm at the First Baptist Church of Westerlo, Westerlo, NY.
