Barbara J. Glover
Barbara J. Glover, 42 years, of Cornwallville, New York, passed away suddenly, on January 1, 2004 at the Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York.
Barbara was born in Albany, New York, on December 5, 1961, daughter of the late Robert and Ruth (Motala) Bynes. She was employed as a bus driver by Coxsackie Transport in Coxsackie, New York.
Barbara loved her family and loved being in the mountains and being outdoors. She was the proud mother of a daughter A1C/Tiara Glover serving her country in U. S. Air Force. Besides her parents Barbara was also predeceased by her brother, Steven Bynes, and a sister Susan Ann Bynes.
Surviving are her daughter Tiara Glover of Columbus Air Force Base in Columbus, Mississippi; a stepson Jimmy Glover of Kiefer, Oklahoma; her significant other, Dan Stewart of Cornwallville, New York; two brothers Robert Bynes and his wife Donna of Climax, New York and Edward Byrnes of Cornwallville, New York; three sisters, Judy Grosse and her husband, Albert of Selkirk, Diane Urell of Bixby, Oklahoma and Cindy Powdrill and her husband Wayne of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held from the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81 Greenville, New York on Monday at 10:30 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham, New York. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Route 9W Glenmont, New York.

Marie E. Peters
Marie E. Peters, age 86 years, formerly of Selkirk, died January 5, 2004, at Green Manor Nursing Home, Ghent, after a long illness.
She was born in Brooklyn, New York, May 12, 1917, and was the daughter of the late Louis and Elizabeth (Schmeckenbecker) Junod.
She had been an area resident since 1980, moving from Hempstead, Long Island to Selkirk, New York. She loved to read, knit and visit restaurants.
She loved her family and spoiling her grandchildren. She also loved music and dancing.
Prior to her retiring, she was a secretary manager for T. Schwartz Furniture Company in West Hempstead, Long Island.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Vikki) Demase of Jefferson Heights, Catskill; a brother, Louis and wife Frances Junod of Levitton, New York; three sisters, Elizabeth Noland and Elsie Peragine, both of Levitton, New York, and Mrs. John (Mildred) Thimmons of Cairo; two grandchildren, Mrs. Rupert (Judith) Eisgruber and Joan Schear and fiancé Bill Williams; six great-grandchildren, Stephanie Lane-Thiele and husband Corey, Jennifer and husband Willard Moore, William Shear, Tiffany Eisgruber, Lauren Shear, Michael Eisgruber. Also, five great-grandchildren, Tyler Lane, Jordan Lane, Savannah Huntsman, Taylor Huntsman and Makenzie Moore.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at the W. C. Brady’s Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion Street, Coxsackie, on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral services will take place Friday at the W. C. Brady Funeral Home, 97 Mansion Street, Coxsackie at 11 a. m. Officiating will be Rev. Harrison Putnam, pastor of the Zion Lutheran Church of Athens.
Interment will take place in the family plot of the Catskill Rural Cemetery.

Thelma B. Theiss
Thelma B. “Teddy” Theiss, 74 years, of Durham, New York, passed away on January 4, 2004 at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn in Albany, New York. She was born in Richmond Hill, New York on June 7, 1929, daughter of Thelma Bell and the late Marshall Bell.
Teddy was a 1947 graduate of Greenville Central High School. She also completed a year of postgraduate education. She was a secretary with the Pioneer Insurance Company and Steven’s Hahne (Hahne & Link) Insurance Company where she was employed for 15 years.
Teddy and her beloved husband Daniel married on September 16, 1950 and shared 53 years of marriage. She was a life member of the Oak Hill-Durham Vol. Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the Greene Co. Vol. Fireman’s Assn. Ladies Auxiliary and a member of The Grange.
Surviving are her husband Daniel Theiss and her mother Thelma Bell, both of Durham, New York.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville, New York.

Riley VanHoesen, Jr.
Riley VanHoesen, Jr., passed away on January 5, 2004 at Albany Medical Center Hospital. He was born in Otsego, New York on August 6, 1926 and was the son of the late Riley and Belle Brandow VanHoesen.
Riley was a dairy farmer for half of his life. He drove a tractor-trailer for American Steel, and more recently, worked at Albany Medical College in maintenance as a plumber for 17 years, before retiring in 1989.
He was a member of Helderberg Reformed Church in Guilderland Center, where he belonged to “Young at Heart” and the Helderberg Hilltopper RV Club. During the 1960’s, he was the fire police captain of the Oak Hill Durham Fire Department. Riley was a past member of the Elks Club Lodge No. 49 and the Moose Club in Palm Bay, Florida.
Riley, known to most as “Jake,” was a loving devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was the husband of Betty Wallace VanHoesen; father of Howard VanHoesen and his wife Patricia of East Durham, and Joyce Peterson of Valatie; stepfather of Rich Wallace and his wife Scherry of Guilderland Center, and Ronald Wallace and his wife Donna of Altamont; brother of Ella Thompkins of Catskill. Riley was the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. VanHoesen was predeceased by his daughter, Barbara Maxwell Case; and his brothers, Burt and Carlton VanHoesen; and his sister Alyce Partridge.
Funeral services will be Friday morning at 10 a.m. at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie (Rt. 155 – south of Central Avenue). Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Memory’s Garden, Colonie. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Northeastern N.Y., 3 Winners Circle, Suite 300, Albany, NY 12205 in memory of Riley VanHoesen.

Robert L. Rox
Robert L. Rox, 84 years of Freehold, New York, passed away on January 12, 2004 at the Samuel Stratton V.A. Medical Center Hospital in Albany, New York. He was born in Shelby, Ohio on November 17, 1919, son of the late Ormond L. and Mary (Payne) Rox.
Bob served his country during WW II in the U. S. Navy. While serving aboard the USS Chateau Theirry he was wounded and received the Purple Heart Medal.
Bob was a truck driver for Allied Van Lines in Great Neck, Long Island, New York. He also was the former owner of the Clover Motel in East Durham, New York. He was a member of the Durham Valley American Legion Post No. 1416 and Tri-town Memorial VFW Post No. 7229. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham, New York. Bob was predeceased by his first wife, Helen Kunick Rox, and a stepson, Neil Lynch.
Surviving are his wife Eileen McHough of Freehold, New York; a daughter Fredlyn and a granddaughter in Dove, Delaware; two brothers Dean Rox and Harry Rox; and a sister, JoAnn Bonnett, all of Shelby, Ohio.
A funeral will be held Thursday, 10:30 a.m. from the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville, New York, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham. Friends called at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in the Freehold Cemetery in the spring. Julia R. Rundell
Julia R. Rundell, 95 years, of Greenville, New York passed away at the home of her daughter in Los Angeles, California on January 2, 2004. She was born in Paterson, New Jersey on September 10, 1908, daughter of the late Martin and Kataryna (Puzio) Soltys.
She was a lifelong homemaker and she was predeceased by two husbands, John Ruskin and Edwin Rundell; a son, Stephen Soltys; and two sisters Sophie Stronzek and Mary Kopec.
Surviving are two daughters, Ann Taranino of Los Angeles, California and Julia Elliott of Kingston, New York; five grandchildren a sister, Anna Maxwell of Bellflower, California and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was Tuesday from the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 DR 81, Greenville, New York. Interment will be in the Town of Catskill Cemetery.

Carl L. Barkman
Carl L. Barkman, 73, of Route 9W, Glenmont, and formerly of Greenville, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, January 8, 2004. Born on August 4, 1930, he was the son of the late Leslie and Lida (Proper) Barkman.
Carl was a graduate of Greenville Central School and a self-mad man. He was employed by Orange Motors in Albany for 27 years, until his retirement in 1978 as vice-president and general manager. He was co-owner of Barkman Farms of Glenmont with his wife Peggy.
Carl was a member of the Bethlehem Elks Lodge No. 2233 in Selkirk, the Norton Hill Wildlife Club, The Florida Eagles, and the James M. Austin Masonic Lodge No. 557 in Greenville. He as also a member of the North East Stock Car Old Timers and a former member of the Greenville Democratic Club.
Carl was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was a natural leader who will be remembered and missed for his caring an generous spirit. Carl enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, cooking, entertaining, living life to the fullest and being the boss.
Carl is survived by his wife Margaret (Peggy) Miller Barkman; his sons Carl. D. Barkman of Sarasota, Florida, Randy Barkman and his wife Mary of Medusa, New York. Gary Barkman and his wife Debra of Selkirk and Paul Miller of St. Louis, Missouri; his daughters Leslie Martin of Cobleskill, New York, Beverly Moore and her husband James of Medusa, and Valeri Hotaling of Coeymans Hollow, New York. He was a grandfather of Lindsay, Rachel, Lacey, Cutis, Kohlton and Garrett Barkman, James and Melissa Moore, Drew and Neal Martin, Jessalyn, Evan and Jamie Hotaling and Tyler Miller. Carl was also survived by an aunt, Phyllis Barkman of Hudson, New York; three nieces, Annemarie, Marlene and Lisa, and a nephew, Michael. He was predeceased by a brother Paul Barkman.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 12 at he Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Avenue, Delmar. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Selkirk.

Esther M. N. Mackey
Esther M. N. Mackey, age 87, passed away on Friday, January 16, 2004. Esther was born in Potter Hollow May 11, 1916 to the late John and Clara Nickerson. She was an only child and spent most of her years residing near the Preston Hollow are. She graduated from the “new” Greenville Central School June 1933. Esther and her loving husband Howard, married September 3, 1937 and spent several years raising milk cows, sheep and chickens on the old farmstead just north of Preston Hollow on Fox Creek Road. Howard and Esther sold the farm in 1981 and lived the rest of their years just up the road in a well-groomed ranch style home. Esther appropriately christened their new homestead “Wind Swept.” The doors were always open for anyone who would stop by. Many delicious meals and desserts were prepared effortlessly and enjoyed at Howard and Esther’s kitchen table.
Those who knew Esther could attest to her profound faith in our Lord God. For several years, Esther was an avid member of the Preston Hollow Baptist Church. She played the organ Sundays and for many special events occurring within the “Hollow.” Each Sunday she would create beautiful thematic arrangements with her homegrown flowers and other bits of nature as a centerpiece in the church vestibule. During her last years, Esther attended and played the organ for the Potter Hollow Union Church. She warmly considered members there as loved ones.
Considering the realm of talents. Esther was blessed with many. She was not only adept at playing the organ and arranging flowers, she also painted beautiful landscapes and portraits. Esther was also a talented letter writer and columnist for Middleburgh News, Greenville Local and News-Herald. “Fox Creek Facts and Fancies” was her column title. She never failed to recognize her neighbor’s accomplishments and sentiment over their mishaps. She so creatively made us chuckle over the antics of her grandchildren. Esther truly loved people and considered everyone her neighbor. He giving heart and trademark signoff, “Keep the Faith” will not be forgotten.
After her faith, the most important aspect of Esther’s life was centered on her grandchildren, Mary Helen, Christopher, Nicholas and her great-granddaughter, Lydia. They brought so much joy to her and she gave much love to them.
Esther was predeceased by he husband, Howard Mackey in 1992.
Surviving are her beloved son, John Mackey and his wife Margaret of Waynesville, Missouri, a daughter, Claire Mackey of Coxsackie, New York; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and one first cousin (“almost sisters”), Norma Fleischer of Kinderhook, New York.
Memorial services will be held at the Preston Hollow Baptist Church, Preston Hollow, New York on January 25, at 1:30 p.m.

Alice J. Powetek
Alice J. Powetek, 74 of Ravena, died Sunday, January 18, 2004 at the Albany County Nursing Home. Alice was born in New York City and had lived in Ravena over 60 years.
She was a home health aide for many families in the area. She was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church, Ravena and the Rosary Altar Society, a member of the Untied Methodist Workers, and a Charter and Life member of the Coeymans Hollow Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary. Alice enjoyed cooking, bingo and her grandchildren.
Alice was the wife of the late Joseph M. Powetek. Survivors include her children, Joseph P. (Sandra) Powetek of New Balitmore, Pauline F. (Al) Nahal of Boston, Marline A. (Frank) Stanton of Coeymans Hollow, and Kimberly A. (John) Rarick of Feura Bush; sister, Josephine Baumann of New York City; brother Chester Abramek of Long Island; seven grandchildren; dear and close friends of Sister Bernadette CR of St. Adalbert Church in Schenectady; and many nieces and nephews. Alice was predeceased by her son Michael D. Powetek, four brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were held January 231 at St. Patrick’s Church, Ravena with Rev. Vincent J. Ciotoli officiating. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Marie Edwards
Marie Edwards, 87 years, of Durham, New York, passed away at Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill, New York on January 19, 2004. She was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 10, 1916, daughter of the late Dominick and Rose Parente. She was retired purchasing agent having worked for Esquire Radio in Brooklyn, New York. She was an auxiliary policewoman in the 62nd Precinct. Upon moving to her home in Durham she loved the out of doors and her horses.
Surviving are her husband of 42 years, Harvey Edwards; a sister, Rose Libretti and a niece, Patricia Renee.
Funeral service were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville with a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 noon from Our Lady of Knock Shrine, East Durham. Friends called at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service. As to her wishes, cremation will be at the Albany Rural Cemetery.

Theodore G. Lennon
Theodore G. Lennon, 80 years of Coxsackie, New York passed away suddenly on January 14, 2004 at the Jackson County Hospital in Marianna, Florida. He was born in Durham, New York on December 19, 1923, son of the late Matthew and Marguerite (Bartholomew) Lennon. Ted retired from the New York State Department of Transportation in 1986 having worked in the Coxsackie area. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Lois (West) Lennon; a son, Theodore Lennon and his wife Deborah of Ravena, New York; three daughters, Susanne Lennon of Cottendale, Florida, Cindy Revcal and her husband Paul of Delanson, New York, and Debra Schnare and her husband Bill of Climax; also 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a brother, Donald Lennon of Bostic, North Carolina.

Eleanor L. Layman
Eleanor L. Layman, 67 years, of Valatie, New York, passed away suddenly at the Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, New York on January 18, 2004. She was born in Rensselaerville, New York on September 29, 1936, daughter of the late Raymond and Lena (Wood) Tanner.
She had moved from Huntington Station, Long Island having worked at Korvett’s as a salesperson and for a time owned the Village Hutte in Kinderhook, New York with her former husband. She than was employed at Universal Match in Hudson, New York and then for several years was a caregiver to many children in her home. Eleanor will be remembered for her giving nature, for her wonderful smile, for her charm and great sense of humor. She was a beautiful woman who was a loving mother, grandmother and a friend to many. She was the former wife of Ernest Millett and Raymond W. Layman.
She was the loving mother of Darlene L. Layman of Menands, New York, Raymond K. Layman of Arizona and Deborah Tutuska of Topeka, Kansas; beloved grandmother of Peter and Brianna Tutuska. Also surviving are a sister, Janet Furman of Clarksville, New York; two brothers, Douglas Tanner of Voorheesville, New York and Gardiner Tanner of Clarksville, New York; also several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Bernice Waldron and five brothers, Charles, Roland, Niles, Robert and Raymond Tanner.
A memorial service will be held Friday, January 23, 7 p.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville, New York.

Joan F. Albin
Joan F. Albin, 73 years, of Freehold, New York passed away January 23, 2004, at the Albany Medical Center Hospital in Albany New York. She was born in Bronx, New York on December 30, 1930, the daughter of the late Vincent and Agnes (McGill) Bigley. She was a telephone operator for several hotels in New York City, one of which was the Plaza Hotel. She relocated with her family to Freehold area in 1968. Joan was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Freehold Fire Company. Joan was a “Lifelong Fan” of the New York Yankees and loved doing her crossword puzzles. Joan was predeceased by a son Robert Albin.
Surviving are her beloved husband of 53 years, John Albin of Freehold, New York; four sons, John Albin Jr. and his wife Elizabeth, Jayme Albin and his wife Ann, Raymond Albin and his wife Stephanie, all of Greenville, New York, and Michael Albin and his wife Susan of Buena Park, California; three daughters, Karen Yacobucci of Freehold, New York, Michele Weidman and her husband Victor of Freehold, New York, and Ellen Stevens and her husband Orrin of Baldwinsville, New York; three brothers, William, Edward and Vincent Bigley; a sister, Margaret Wrynn; 14 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and a special “like a son” friend, Joseph Savino Jr.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, January 27, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville, New York.

Ester R. Cleveland
Ester Ruth Cleveland, 80 of Coeymans, died Thursday, January 22, 2004 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital. Ester was born August 27, 1923, daughter of the late Elizabeth Haver.
Ester was predeceased by her husband, James H. Cleveland. Survivors include her children, Mary Margiotta and Joyce (Sandy) Castle, both of Florida, Rosemary (Harry) Lambert of West Coxsackie, Barbara (August) Jones of Voorheesville, Donna (James Pasquini of Coeymans, Tina Carl of Guilderland, and Kathy Benson of Hudson; 19 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. He son Herbert Cleveland, and daughter Betty Terrell, predeceased Ester.
All services will be private at the convenience of the family.
Contributions in memory of Ester may be made to the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association or the Community Hospice of Albany, Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital.

Joseph G. Orsino
Joseph G. Orsino, 80 of Coeymans, died Thursday, January 22, 2004 at St. Peter’s Hospital. Joe “Clean” was born in Ravena, son of the late William and Virginia Frangella Orsino, and lived most of his life in Coeymans.
He was a Navy veteran serving during WW II. Joe retired after many years of service with the New York Central Railroad. He was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church, Ravena, a member of The Knights of Columbus, VFW Post 9594, American Legion, and the Coeymans Fire Co.
Survivors include his wife, Santa Palmer Orsino of Coeymans; children, James J. Orsino and his wife Anita of Greeneville and Virginia Orsino and her husband Carl Sinter of Coeymans; grandson, James L. (Nicole) Orsino Jr.; great granddaughter Emma Orsino; and several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, James and William Orsino, predeceased Joseph.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 25 at the Babcock Funeral Home, Ravena with Rev. William Paper officiating. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Joseph may be made to St. Patrick’s Church, 21 Main St., Ravena, NY 12143.

Joseph Prosodic
Joseph Prosodic, 88 years, of Hanna Croix, New York, passed away on January 22, 2004 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was born in New York City, New York on December 4, 1915.
Joseph served his country during WW II in the US Army from 1943 to 1946. The US Post Office in the Bronx employed him as a postal worker until his retirement in 1972. Joseph was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He was active in Senior Services. He was also a member of a bowling league at Catskill Hoebowl in Catskill, New York.
Joseph was predeceased by his mother and father; a brother, Walter; a sister, Olga; and beloved wife, Esperanza “Hope” Procowich.
Surviving are his daughter, Providence Estrada of Virginia Beach, Virginia; a grand son, Kenneth Estrada; two great-grandsons, Joseph Paul and Thomas Michael Estrada and his dear friend Dorothy Freer.
A prayer service was held on Wednesday, January 28 at 4 p.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville. Friends called at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. The Greenville American Legion Post No. 291 conducted a service at 2:30 p.m. Interment will be in the spring in the Greenville Cemetery.

Damian M. Riozzi
Damian M. Riozzi (Dempsey), 81 years, of One Brick Row, Athens, died January 21, 2004 at the Eden Park Health Care Center, Catskill, where he had been a resident since August 27, 2003. He was born in Glason, Ulster County, on May 30, 1922, and was the son of the late Cosmo and Rose (Riccio) Riozzi Sr.
During WW II, in the South Pacific he served his country in the United States Army.
He retired from the Parts Department of the Milroy Chevrolet Cadillac Dealership of Catskill. He was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Athens.
He was a member of the Catskill Elks No. 1341, the Athens American Legion TGM, a member of the Rivertown Senior Citizens and the Athens Fire Department. He loved to walk, he loved all sports and he was a diehard Yankee fan.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Angelina J. (Romano) Riozzi, of Athens; two daughter, Rosemary Paolino and son-in-law Jeffery of Parkland, Florida; Joann Knabbe and son-in-law Robert of the town of Newburgh, New York. He is also survived by two brothers, Cosmo and John Riozzi, both of Hudson; a sister, Mary Romano of Ravena; five grandchildren, Ross and Lee Paolino, Lauren, Megan and Alison Knabbe; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Besides his parent, he is predeceased by one brother, Patrick, in 1970.
Relatives and friends attended calling hours at the Richard Funeral Home, 28 North Vernon Street in Athens on Friday. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, January 24 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, Athens with Father Garry Gilfenbein, Pastor of St. James Church, Chatham, as the celebrant.
Interment followed in the family plot of the New Athens Rural Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to St. Patrick’s Church, Athens, or the Athens Fire Company.
