Herbert G. Lien
Veteran, firefighter 

Greenville – Herbert G. Lien, 86, of Saugerties, formerly of Norton Hill and Greenville Center died at the Benedictine Hospital in Kingston on Aug. 28, 2006. 

He was born in Staten Island on Aug. 2, 1920, son of the late Mathias and Ella (Gabrielsen) Lien. Herb served in the Army during WWII and received the American Theater of Operations Service ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal.

He was a retired carpenter and millwright.

He was a member of the James Austin Lodge No. 557 F&AM, and a former member of the Greenville Volunteer Fire Company. He enjoyed his gardening and was known for his love of animals and his pets.

He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather and a friend to all who knew him.

He was predeceased by his wife, Carolyn (Scott) Lien; a brother, Clifford (Warren) Lien; and a sister, Irene Long.

Funeral service will be Saturday, 1 pm at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 6 to 9pm. The James Austin Lodge F&AM will conduct services at the funeral home on Friday evening at 7:30pm.

Interment with military honors will be in the Greenville Cemetery.

Frederick W. Janz, Jr.
Korean War veteran

Catskill – Frederick William Janz, Jr., 76, of 85 Woodland Ave., Catskill, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson. He was born Aug. 19, 1930 in Brooklyn.

Mr. Janz served in the US Navy and Army during the Korean War. He was an employee of W.B. McGuire in Hudson prior to his retirement. Fred was a member of the American Legion.

Mr. Janz is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret E. (Hallenbeck) Janz of Catskill; two sons, Frederick Janz III of Connecticut and Bruce Janz of Hunter; three daughters, Cathy Goodrich of Hunter, LouAnn Janz of Palenville and Patricia Pilaar of Cairo; a stepson, Charles DiStasio of Atlanta, GA; two stepdaughters, Andrea Daisernia of North Carolina and Alana Durkee of North Carolina; a stepson, Mark Wormuth of Florida; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services with full military honors will be held 11am Tuesday at the Town of Catskill Cemetery. The Rev. James Clark will be officiating.

Ronald I. Johnson, Sr.
US Army veteran

Cairo – Ronald Johnson, Sr., 70, of Brookside Mobile Home Park, South Cairo, died Aug. 30, 2006, at Community Hospice, at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson, after a long illness with cancer.  

He was born in Catskill Oct. 8, 1935, and was the son of the late Coley and Doris (Bush) Johnson.

Funeral services will take place this evening at 8:30pm at the Richards Funeral Home, 29 Bross St., Cairo, with the Rev. Doris Teijen officiating.

Private cremation will follow at the Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands.

Ronald is a lifetime resident of Cairo. Prior to his retirement he was employed by Jackie Graham who owned and operated Empire Masonry. He was devoted to his trade. Ronald served his country from 1957 to 1959 in the United States Army.

He is survived by his wife Caroline M. (Poole) Jones of South Cairo; four sons, James Poole of Florida, Roger Poole of Leeds, Ronald Johnson, Jr. of South Cairo, Donald Johnson, Sr. of Catskill; three daughters, Melissa Weisenger of Kiskatom, Bonnie Lackie of Athens, Charlene Ralph of Albany; a sister, Joyce Cioffi of Leeds, and is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brother, Donald F. Johnson and wife Linda of North Carolina.

Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his daughter Ronda and brother Alwyn Poole.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at the Richards Funeral Home, 29 Bross Street, Cairo, today from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.

Fred E. Riccobono, Sr.

Catskill – Mr. Fred E. Riccobono Sr., age 78, of Catskill, died Wednesday, August 30, 2006, at home, surrounded by his family. He was born December 23, 1927, in Manhattan, New York City, the son of the late Erasmo and Anna (Scalise) Riccobono.

Fred served in the United States Army during World War II. He was an employer of I.B.M. of Kingston for over 35 years prior to his retirement. Fred was a life member of Catskill Hose Company #1 and was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club.

Mr. Riccobono was predeceased by his wife, Mrs. Gloria M. (Palermo) Riccobono on July 20, 2004; and two brothers, Joseph Riccobono and Frank Riccobono.

Mr. Riccobono is survived by three sons, Fred Riccobono Jr. of Catskill, Orrie Riccobono and wife Gail of Catksill, and Christopher Riccobono and wife Denise of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren, Peter, Sarah, Nicole, Mark, Kellen, and Joshua Riccobono; and many cousins nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call at Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill, on Saturday from 1 to 4pm. Private interment will be at the convenience of the family.

Frank P. Fabrizio

Cairo – Frank P. Fabrizio, 90, of 127 Mountain Ave., Cairo, died Sept. 1, 2006, at Community Hospice at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson after a brief illness.

He was born in the Bronx Nov. 4, 1915, and was the son of the late Joseph and Anna (Nicoletti) Fabrizio.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11am at the Sacred Heart Church, Cairo, with the Rev. Fr. J. Murphy, pastor, the celebrant.

Interment will follow in the family plot of St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Catskill, near his late son, Vincent P. Fabrizio.

Mr. Fabrizio was the founder and owner, for over 70 years, of the Fabrizio Fuel Company located in Cairo. He was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo. He was past president of the Holy Names Society of the Sacred Heart Church, Cairo. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Knock Council, No.6439 of East Durham. He was also a member of the Cairo Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jacqueline (Ruta) Fabrizio of Cairo; two daughters, Mrs. Vincent (Theresa) Dorio of Cairo and Mrs. Joseph (Joanne) (Spencer) Kaliszczjka of Nesconet; also survived by three brothers, Cosmo Fabrizio of Plymouth, Mass., Anthony Fabrizio and Joseph Fabrizio, both of California; also survived by two sisters Mary Shippe of East Durham and Ann Clucken of California; also surviving are six grandchildren, Vincent, Joseph and David Dorio and Crista (Spencer) Coughlin, Cara and Cayla Spencer. There are also two great-grandchildren, Gary Benware and Robert Dorio.

Besides his parents and his son, Vincent P. Fabrizio, he is predeceased by his sister Paula (Pauline) Raffa and his brother John Fabrizio who died on Aug. 10, 2006.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at the Richards Funeral Home, 29 Bross St., Cairo, on Sunday from 7-9pm and on Monday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.

Irene Clark Earl
Cairo Schools teacher

Cairo – Irene Clark Earl, 99, formerly of Main Street in Cairo, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at Eden Park Health Care Center where she has been a resident since Aug. 17, 2006. She was also a resident of the Pavilion for a period of time.

Born Nov. 5, 1907 in Lexington, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Inez Treusdell Clark.

Mrs. Earl moved to Cairo in 1930 and graduated from the New Paltz Normal School  and became an elementary teacher in the Cairo Central School system.

She married John B. Earl, who owned and operated the local pharmacy in Cairo, in 1935. He predeceased her.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Cairo, United Methodist Women, honorary member of the Monday Council Club and past matron and 55-year member of Cairo Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star 380.

Survivors include a niece, Mary T. Osborn; a nephew, Bruce M. Tompkins; and several great nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Viola E. Tompkins.

Calling hours will be 7 to 9pm Wednesday at the Richards Funeral home, 29/383 Bross St., Cairo.

The Cairo Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star 380 will hold services 7:30pm Wednesday.

Funeral services will be held 10am Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Retta Lykens, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Cairo, officiating.

Interment will follow next to her husband in the Ashland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Asbury Memorial Fund of the United Methodist Church.

Joseph A. Rutana
Businessman, teacher

Coxsackie – Joseph A. Rutana, 89, of 10 Kings Road, West Coxsackie, died Sept. 4, 2006, at Albany Medical Center, after injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born on Jan. 13, 1917, in Amsterdam, and was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Albert Rutana.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Coxsackie, at 9am on Friday.

Interment will take place with full military honors in the family plot next to his late wife Lois (Morris) Rutana, who predeceased him in 1985, in the St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, Coxsackie.

He has been an area resident since the early 1960’s. He owned and operated Rutana’s Shoe Repair Shop. He served in the US Army during World War II. He loved gardening and traveling. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 548 of Coxsackie. He also was a teacher the Coxsackie Correctional Facility.

He is survived by three daughters, Kimberly Rutano of Catskill, Pamela Ward of Coxsackie, Joanne Rutana of Buffalo; three sisters, Bertha Hankins of Texas and Sybil Rutana and Edna Rutana, both of Amsterdam; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and his wife, he is predeceased by a brother, John Rutana, and two sisters, Helen Rutana and Eleanor Easton.

Dorothy Tompkins Decker

Catskill – Dorothy Tompkins Decker, 88, of Catskill died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, at her residence following a short illness.

Born in Leeds on July 3, 1918, she was the wife of the late John J. Decker for 62 years, and the daughter of the late Harry E. and Beatrice Deyo Tompkins.

A Catskill resident all of her life and a graduate of Catskill High School, Mrs. Decker was a devoted member of the Catskill High School, Mrs. Decker was a devoted member of the Catskill United Methodist Church where she was very active and served as treasurer of their Memorial Fund for many years. She was a 50-member of the Hose Co., No. 1 Ladies Auxiliary, as well as having been very active with the Boy Scouts of America with her three sons. Mrs. Decker worked as the Guidance Office secretary in the Catskill High School for many years after starting with the Grandview Elementary School.

Mrs. Decker is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Sharon Decker of Saugerties, and Thomas and Mary Jane Decker of Catskill; six grandchildren, William Decker of Red Hook, Lisa Rivenburgh, Benjamin and David Decker, all of Catskill, Donald and Toni Jo Decker of Joplin, Mo.; six great-grandchildren; brother, Harold Tompkins and sister Florence Gavigan, both of Catskill; in addition to many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Donald Decker in 1984; brother Chester Tompkins and husband, John J. Decker on Oct. 27, 2004.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 11am in the Remembrance Chapel of the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill with the Rev. Arthur Hewett officiating.

Interment will follow in the Town of Catskill Cemetery.

Joan Grace Lerner Greenberg
Veteran educator

Columbus, Ohio – Joan Grace Lerner Greenberg, 74, of Columbus, Ohio, died with her family by her side at her home on Wednesday, September 6, 2006, after a long illness.

Formerly a longtime Bexley resident, she was a veteran educator in retirement. Following a short stint with Reynoldsburg City Schools, she positively impacted thousands of students’ lives in Bexley City Schools for more than three decades, during which she was honored multiple times for her unbridled commitment to enriching the lives of students at Bexley Junior High School. Such was her love for education and those she mentored that immediately after her retirement in 2001, she pursued and was active in substitute teaching at Bexley City Schools.

Born to Isidore and Margaret Lerner on Dec. 11, 1931, in Albany, she was reared in Catskill.

Known to family and friends as “Joanie”, she graduated from the Edgewood School of Greenwich, Conn., in 1949 and Simmons College at Boston, Mass., in 1953.

She also completed graduate-level bridge, gardening, tennis and travel. Nothing was more important to Joanie than her family. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Bob Greenburg; son Steve Greenberg, his wife, Sally, and their daughters, Annie and Rachel, of Carmel, Ind.; son Peter Greenburg, his wife, Jennifer, their daughter, Emily, and their son, Sam, of Bexley; brothers Dr. Martin Lerner (Gerline) of Suffolk, Va., and Robert Lerner (Gilda) of West Hartford, Conn.; cousins Jerry Lerner (Arlene) of Standfordville, Carol Lubetsky of New York, Laurel Lerner of Cranbury, NJ, and Norman Price of Philadelphia three nieces, two nephews, two great nieces and eleven great nephews; and countless friends and colleagues.

Schenectady – Vincent M. Seeley, 58, of Schenectady, formerly of Greene County, died at home, Friday Sept. 8, 2006 in the arms of his loving family.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday evening from 4 until 7pm at Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Vincent De Paul, 900 Madison Ave. at a time to be announced.

Athens – Kevin R. Fitzgerald, 48, of South Washington Street, died suddenly Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, in Jamaica on Long Island. (September 8, 2006 in Sept. 12, 2006 obituary)

Born in the Bronx, he was the son of James and Marie Jacobson Fitzgerald.

Mr. Fitzgerald had been a resident of Athens for three years and was also an employee of the Long Island Railroad for more than 25 years.

He enjoyed golfing and NASCAR racing.

Survivors include a son, James Fitzgerald of Athens; a daughter, Cecily Fitzgerald of Athens; two brothers, James Fitzgerald of Fishkill and Stanley Fitzgerald of Huntington, Long Island; a sister, (Patricia – in Sept. 12th obituary) Hillicross of Athens; three nieces and three nephews.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm Wednesday at WC Brady’ s Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9am Thursday at St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Coxsackie with the Rev. John Moyna, pastor, officiating.

Greenville – Peter K. Jarozewski, 54, of Greenville, died suddenly Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006, at his home.

Born Nov. 17, 1951 in Sweden, he was the son of Ted and Karen Roos Jarozewski.

He enjoyed down hill and cross country skiing.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a brother, Thomas J. Jarozewski of Greenville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11am Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Church.

Interment will be in the Greenville Cemetery.

As to his wishes, he was cremated at the Albany Rural Cemetery.

Coxsackie – Catherine Marie Hertz Klein, of Coxsackie and formerly of Glenmont, died Saturday, September 9, 2006.

Born Dec. 20, 1918 in Albany, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Hertz and Magdalena Heinrichs Hertz.

Raised in Glenmont, she was the class president of Holy Names in 1937, having earlier attended Bethlehem Central, excelling academically, as well as in piano, organ and sports including becoming captain of the basketball team. She was an active member of 4-H, frequently winning prizes for dress design. She was a graduate of Mildred Elley School.

Mrs. Klein worked as a young woman at St. Peter’s Hospital, raised African violets for sale, ran a chair caning business, and volunteered at Hope House in Glenmont.

She attended St. Thomas Church in Delmar for most of her life, which her father helped found. She also enjoyed the Adirondacks.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Terence and Gail Klein, Mark and Elaine Klein and Paul and Theresa Klein; six grandchildren, Natalie Klein Cavanagh, Joel, Sarah, Erika, Stefan, Jacqueline, a great-grandson, a cousin; a nephew; and a niece.

She was predeceased by her husband of more than 50 years, Allan Richard Klein, who died in 1993; and a niece.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm Tuesday at the Brady Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie.

A funeral Mass will be held 9:30am Wednesday at St. Thomas Church in Delmar (Adams Place).

Interment will be at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Thomas School library in Delmar.

Cairo – A memorial service for Carl “Gus” Gustavson, 85, will be held will begin at 10:30am Saturday at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cairo.

A short visitation will follow at 11am with speakers and a worship service given by the Rev. Victor Nelson. Members of the Cairo American Legion Post983 will honor Mr. Gustavson at the church.

Interment will be in the Winston Cemetery, County Route 20, East Durham immediately following the church service.

There will be a gathering at the Pot o’ Gold in Acra after the cemetery service at approximately 1pm. Morty, Peg and family graciously offered to provide a buffet. Posters and memorabilia will be displayed at this time.

Lake Katrine – Caroline A. Bowman, 95, of Ten Broeck Commons, Lake Katrine, formerly of Esopus, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2006, at Ten Broeck Commons.

Born July 11, 1911 in Esopus, she was the daughter of the late George Hummel and Elizabeth Casey.

A graduate of Kingston High School, she attended Cornell University.

Mrs. Bowman was employed as a U.S. postal clerk for the West Park Post Office.

She was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Esopus, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary in the Esopus Fire Department, a member of her church’s Craft Club, former member of the town of Esopus Senior Citizens; a member of AARP; member and past president of Colonial Gardens Senior Citizens; life member of VFW ladies Auxiliary; past president of the Resident Council of Ten Broeck Commons; and member of Ten Broeck Commons Newsletter Committee.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, John J. and Helen Bowman of Athens, Joseph F. and Patricia Bowman of Mesa, Ariz. And James E. and Gail Bowman of Stratford, Conn.; one daughter, Mary Ann Ashdown and friend Allen of Lake Katrine; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence J. Bowman, on Jan. 4, 1977.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm Wednesday at Keyser Funeral Service Inc., 216 Broadway, Port Ewen, Ulster County.

The funeral procession will form 9:15am Thursday at the funeral home and proceed to Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church where a 10am Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Eugene Grohe.

Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Kingston.

Valatie – Dennis Thomas Murphy, 60, formerly of Brooklyn and Valatie, died Saturday, September 9, 2006, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

Born Aug. 23, 1946 in San Diego, Calif., he was the son of the late Patrick and Nina Coryal Murphy.

Mr. Murphy was an employee of the NYC Dept. of Parks and Recreation prior to his retirement.

He was an avid bowler and played in various leagues and tournaments in NYC.

Survivors include three sisters and brothers-in-law, Maureen and Melvin Mittman of Florida, Patricia and Jerry Feldman of Catskill and Kathleen and Phil Heath of Cairo; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7-9pm today at Traver and McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Catskill – Gladys Peck, 99, formerly of Maplecrest, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, at the Eden Park Health Care Center in Catskill.

She was born May 2, 1907 in Hobart, Delaware County.

She married Robert Peck in spring 1927. He predeceased her.

Mrs. Peck worked as a volunteer at the Nutrition Site in Catskill for more than 30 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Carole.

In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a daughter, Betty.

A memorial service will be held 11am Wednesday at the Decker Funeral Home in Windham with Rev. Ellen Oliveto officiating.

Interment will follow at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Ashland.

Cairo – A memorial service for Carl “Gus” Gustavson, 85, will be held Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, Cairo.

Athens – Joan Marie Olivett, 74, of Constantine Court, died at St. Peter’s Hospital following a brief illness on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006.

Born Nov. 30, 1931 in Troy, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Helena Willi.

She worked for both the State of New York in both Coxsackie and Hudson correctional facilities. She enjoyed baseball, crossword puzzles and visiting with her children and grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her brother, Jack Willi of San Jose, Calif.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of nearly 30 years, Joseph C. Olivett Jr. of Athens.

She is also survived by her children Dale Tuttle of Binghamton; Debra (Wayne) Butterworth of Hudson; Donna (Michael) Siciliano of Athens; Denise (Louis) Tomaso of Guilderland; Diane (Raymond) Swota of Canyon City, Colo.; and Dean Tuttle of Shreveport, La, her grandchildren Wayne Butterworth Jr. of Athens; Shawn Butterworth of Cairo; Michael Dominic and Spencer Siciliano of Athens, Alexandra Tomaso of Guilderland; Ladonna Allen of Menands; Nicholas Swota of Canyon City, Colo.; Kennedy Tuttle of Shreveport, La. She was fondly anticipating the arrival of her first great-grandchild.

Survivors also include her three sisters, Marilyn Carmody of Troy, Geri Carmody of Latham and Shirley Willi of Menands, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A private graveside service will be held. Arrangements have been made by the Richards Funeral Home, 28 North Vernon St., Athens.

Friends and family are invited to attend a buffet luncheon to be held at Hagar’s Harbor in Athens noon Friday.

A Mass will be held Tuesday, 10am at St. Patrick’s Church in Athens with the Rev. James Bortelsmann officiating.

Teacher at Greenville 

Schenectady – Vincent M. Seeley, 58, of Schenectady, formerly of Greene County, died at home Sept. 8, 2006, in the arms of his loving family.

Born in Beacon in 1948, he was the son of the late Vincent A. and Louise (Berinato) Seeley. He was raised in Wappingers Falls.

Vincent received his Associate in Arts Degree from Dutchess Community College, graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree  from the State University of New York College at Fredonia and received his Masters Degree from the State University of New York College at New Paltz.

Vince was a teacher. He gave his entire career to students of the Greenville Central School district, teaching there from 1971 until he retired in 2000. He taught social studies, advanced placement economics and the alternative education program. He was known as a remarkable and distinguished educator. He loved his students and followed their accomplishments with pride. A leader of the teachers’ union, he served as president of the Greenville Faculty Association for many years.

Vince loved the sport of curling and was a member of the Albany Curling Club. He was a former member of Thunderheart Golf Course in Freehold and enjoyed playing in leagues at Thunderheart and Stadium Golf Club. He also loved animals and rescued pets throughout his life.

Mr. Seeley is survived by his wife Sherrie (Close) Seeley and his son, Noel Seeley of Schenectady; his sister, Sandra (Stephen) Empert of Gloucester, Va.; his father and mother-in-law who loved him like a son, Donald and Nina Close; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of dear friends.

Vincent’s family thanks all those who helped during his struggle with cancer.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday evening from 4 until 7pm at Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady. A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 900 Madison Ave., Albany on Saturday at 10am.

Lulu was born in Coxsackie, Greene County, to the late Evelyn Hosford of Athens and Carl “Dusty” Cary, Sr., of Coxsackie.

She graduated from Coxsackie-Athens High School in 1957.

Lulu fulfilled her passion of motherhood. As a stay at home mom she provided a loving and nurturing environment for her seven children.

She also left a lasting legacy in the greater Coxsackie community by providing compassionate, caring and secure day care to a significant number of local children and families. She was known for her warm and caring heart and love for children.

Lulu is survived by her husband of 34 years, Stewart Seaburg, Jr. and seven children, including sons Alexander (Renee) “Sandy” Mathes, Jr., Jeffrey (Amy) Mathes, Craig (Missy) Seaburg; daughters Sheryl Mathes, Tammy (Mike) Sutherland, Elizabeth Bakerian, Diana (Matt) Heckman; stepsons Stewart W. Highland, Calif. – Duane C. Eastgate, 81, died Sept. 8, 2006 at Redlands Community Hospital of congestive heart failure and Alzheimer’s disease. The family appreciates the wonderful care he received from the Sunshine House Board and Care in Calimesa, Calif., by Mario Manjarrez and his staff Marcella, Eva and others.

Mr. Eastgate was the son of Sanford and Ada Nichol Eastgate of Catskill, formerly of North Dakota. He attended schools in Catskill and was in the Navy for two years as an electrician. Upon his discharge he was employed by New York Telephone for 31 years. He then moved to California and worked for GTE Telephone Co. until his retirement.

He enjoyed some years of traveling in their motor home around the western states and a trip to Alaska. Gardening and his workshop gave him much enjoyment.

He married Lois M. Duncan of South Cairo at the Presbyterian Church in Catskill.

Mr. Eastgate is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lois (Duncan) Eastgate; their son Jeffrey C. and his wife Janet M. (Abshire) Eastgate; and two grandchildren Cody E. and Shana E. Eastgate of Wasila, Alaska.

He wished for no viewing hours and he will be buried in the Greenville in a family plot.

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – Gerard N. Mower, 81, of Oakland Park and formerly of Saugerties, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at Manor Pines Nursing Home.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the US Army and was a retired employee of IBM in Kingston where he worked for more than 25 years.

He was a lifetime member of the Saugerties Knights of Columbus Council No. 4536.

Survivors include his wife, the former Marilyn Ploonsky Mower of Fort Lauderdale; three sons, Gerard “Jerry”, Paul and Steven Mower all of Saugerties; two daughters, JoAnn Murphy and Jean Cunningham both of Saugerties; two stepsons, Stephen and Bruce Polonsky of Florida; 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the convenience of the family. Local arrangements are under the direction of the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc., corner of John and Lafayette Streets, Saugerties.

Catskill – Ralph Arthur Phoenix, Jr., 91, of 7 Hudson Ave., Catskill, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

He was born Feb. 6, 1915 in Boston, the son of the late Ralph and Josephine (Noll) Phoenix Sr.

Ralph served in the US Coast Guard during World War II. He was an insurance agent for Prudential Insurance Co. in Catskill for many years prior to his retirement.  Ralph was a member of Catskill Senior Fellowship, St. Patrick’s Church in Catskill, Honeyford Memorial American Legion Post 110, and R.I.P.S.

Mr. Phoenix is survived by four children, James (Melly) Phoenix of Corpus Christi, Texas, Robert (Phyllis) Phoenix of Round Top, Susan (Thomas) Mccullough of South Cairo, and Nancy (Fred) Bittner of Mansfield, Mass; grandchildren Stephen Phoenix, Jennifer Phoenix, Melissa McCullough, Thomas Mccullough and fiancé Sarah Grover, Terry Weed, Timothy Mccullough, Kelly Miller, Amanda Miller, Andy and Jane Bittner; and two great-grandchildren, Evron Phoenix and Ashley Miller.

Mr. Phoenix was predeceased by a son, Thomas R. Phoenix on August 5, 1978, and his wife, Jane H. Phoenix on July 17, 1984.

Tannersville – Patricia Curran Byrne, 91, of Tannersville, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, Sept. 15, 2006.

Patricia, one of six children, was born on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1915.

The daughter of Michael and Catherine Curran, Patricia was predeceased by her husband, Owen P. Byrne.

She is survived by a sister Irene Montie of Silver Springs, Md.; her five children, Sharon A. Van Dyke of Catskill, Maureen E. Byrne of Tarrytown, Kevin O’Byrne of New Providence, N.J.; Brian H. Byrne of Tannersville and Sean M. Byrne of Haines Falls; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A lifelong lover of long walks in the mountains, poetry and education. Patricia was raised in Elka Park, was valedictorian of her class at Hunter-Tannersville Central School, earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Hunter College in New York City and Master’s Degree in special education from SUNY New Paltz.

Patricia was a proud parent, teacher and owner of Curran’s Tavern in Tannersville.

Calling hours will be from 2-4 and 7-9pm on Monday, Sept. 18 at the Aston-Basagic Funeral Home, Main Street, Hunter. A funeral Mass will be held 1am Tuesday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Haines Falls with interment immediately thereafter.

Catskill – Marian Vivian Craig, 86, of Catskill died Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Kaaterskill Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Catskill where she had been a patient since Sept. 11.

Mrs. Craig was born in Saugerties on May 29, 1920 to the late Henry and Mildred Hardy Myer. She graduated from Saugerties High School and married John Robb Craig. She was a clerk at the Jamesway in Catskill for many years and following her retirement enjoyed shopping and lunching with family and friends.

Mrs. Craig is survived by her daughter, Mrs. David (Jodi) Guldenstern of Catskill; a granddaughter, Erin Guldenstern, currently a sophomore at Siena College; and a sister, Nancy Githner of Saugerties.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Robb Craig, on July 10, 1984, and a daughter, Janis Lennon on May 27, 2002.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 11am in the Remembrance Chapel of the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill with interment following in the Town of Catskill Cemetery.

Hunter – Jean A. Danet, 70, of Hunter died on Sept. 13, 2006 at the Benedictine Hospital in Kingston.

He was born April 20, 1936, son of the late Alexis and Madeleine Helbert Danet in Domfront en Champagne, France.

He was a master chef and was employed by many restaurants locally, in New York City and in several states. He purchased a restaurant in Hunter in the 1970s, formerly Maryann’s, and renamed it Le Bar Del’Equipe.

He was a member of the Societe Culinaire Philanthropique.

Survivors include a sister, Maryvonne Arnoux of France; nieces Armelle Pierrefontaine, Maryvonne Arnoux and her husband Jean and children Francois and Florent, Marie Jane Baker, Nadime Danet; and nephews Xavier Danet, Pascal Danet and his wife Andrea and children Nicolas and Cecile, all of France; and many friends, among them Joel Guerinot of Guilford, Conn.

Windham – Dorothy J. Bradley, 93, of Windham, formerly of New Jersey, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2006, at the Ferncliff Nursing Home, Rhinebeck, where she had been a resident for the past five years.

Born Feb. 25, 1913 in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of Harold and Agnes Gray McNeil.

Mrs. Bradley was an elementary school teacher for 25 years with the Archdiocese of Newark, N.J., working communities of Dumont, New Milford and Ridgefield Park.

She also served as a volunteer at Englewood Hospital also in New Jersey, where she completed 1,000 hours of service. She relocated to East Jewett and then to Windham after retiring in 1979.

Mrs. Bradley was a parishioner of St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church where she volunteered as a teacher in the religious education program. She also served as a literacy volunteer in Catskill and Cairo.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and Martin Conlon; a granddaughter, Suzanne Conlon; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, William, in 1972; a brother, Joseph McNeil; and a sister, Agnes Herlihy.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7pm Thursday at Decker Funeral Home, Windham.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 9:30am Friday at St. Theresa’s  Roman Catholic Church, Windham.

Catskill – Ralph A(rthur) Phoenix, Jr., 91, of 7 Hudson Ave., Catskill, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

Born Feb. 6, 1915 in Boston, he was the son of the late Ralph and Josephine Noll Phoenix Sr.

He served in the US Coast Guard during World War II.

Mr. Phoenix was an insurance agent for Prudential Insurance Co. in Catskill for many years prior to his retirement.

He was a member of Catskill Senior Fellowship, St. Patrick’s Church in Catskill, Honeyford Memorial American Legion Post 110 and R.I.P.S.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Melly Phoenix of Corpus Christi, Texas and Robert and Phyllis Phoenix of Round Top; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Thomas McCullough of South Cairo and Nancy and Fred Bittner of Mansfield, Mass; eight grandchildren, Steven Phoenix, Jennifer Phoenix, Melissa McCullough, Thomas McCullough and fiancé Sarah Grover, Kelly Miller, Amanda Miller and Andy and Jane Bittner; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, including Betty Jane Dovigh and Richard Warren Noll, and his loving companion Miriam Murphy.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jane H. Phoenix, on July 17, 1984; and a son, Thomas R. Phoenix, on Aug. 5, 1978.

Funeral services were held Friday at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, Catskill.

Athens – Hubert S. Ramsey, 81, of New Hartford, Oneida County, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006, at the Presbyterian Nursing Home after a long illness.

He was born Nov. 4, 1924 in Richmond, Va.

He was a carrier fighter pilot in World War II. He was also a graduate of SUNY Oswego.

After his retirement from the Navy, Mr. Ramsey was employed by the General Electric Company for 38 years as a manager in Pittsfield, Mass. and Schenectady Gas Turbine.

Following his retirement in 1985, he lived in Morehead City, NC and was a very active as a volunteer with the Wildwood Fire Department, Meals on Wheels and the American Red Cross. He was also a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Havelock, NC.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Lois; two daughters and a son-in-law, Christine Ramsey of Elkhart, Ind. and Kathleen and John Wagner of Athens; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Barbara Ramsey of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren, Rachel, Michael and Laura Ramsey; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Anne McGill.

Visitation will be 11 to 11:30am Wednesday at the Richards Funeral Home, 28 N. Vernon St., Athens, followed by a noon service at the Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mokry, pastor of Utica, officiating.

Interment will follow in the New Athens Rural Cemetery.

Catskill – Sadie Onyskiewicz, 89, of Lexington died at Eden Park Health Care Facility on Sept. 16, 2006.

 She was born in Brooklyn, the daughter of the late John and Verminc (Zapindoski) Kopowicz.

She was predeceased by her husband Vladamirerho, who was killed during World War II, and two children, Barbara and William.

She is survived by three grandchildren, Lorraine Tait, Thomas Cairns and William Cairns; as well as seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted today at the Decker Funeral Home in Windham at 10:30am.

Calling hours will be from 9:30 to 10:30am.

Interment will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery in Jewett.

Navy veteran, firefighter

Ravena – Charles R. Ruso, 62, of Selkirk, died on Monday, Sept. 18, 2006 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Charles was a lifelong resident of Coeymans. He was a 1964 graduate of Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School. He was a Navy veteran serving during the Vietnam War. Charles was a life member of the Coeymans Fire Company for 45 years, life member of the Ravena Coeymans Sportsman’s Club, a member of the Ravena Coeymans Yacht Club and a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. In 2000 he retired after 30 years of service with the City of Albany.

Charles was the son of the late Ronald and Neta Ruso.

Survivors include his wife, Ella Swartout Ruso of Selkirk; children Allie and Chuck Wagoner of Selkirk and Tara and Brian Burns of Ravena; grandchildren, Tyler Gallagher, Breah, Haley and Brian Jr. Burns, and Noah and Caitlynne Wagoner; siblings, Bonnie J. Ruso, Millard and Jane Ruso, Lynne and Jack Wallace and Peggy and John Sowek; and several nieces and nerphews.

Charles was predeceased by his brothers. Floyd A. Ruso and Buford S. Layman.

Funeral services will be held 11am Friday, Sept. 22, at the Grace United Methodist Church, Ravena.

Interment will follow in Grove Cemetery, Coeymans.

Friends may call at the Babcock Funeral Home, Ravena on Thursday from 4 to 8pm.

Coxsackie – Jean E. Stevens, 72, of Bethany Village, West Coxsackie, died Sept. 18, 2006 at her residence.

She was born in Catskill on Nov. 10, 1933 and was the daughter of the late Milton and Pearl (Darringer) Decker.

She is survived by her husband, Douglas J. Stevens Sr., of West Coxsackie; two sons, Douglas J. Stevens Jr. of Albany and Joseph M. Stevens of Ravena; two daughters, Mrs. Andrew (Linda) Overbaugh of Greenville and Penny Stevens of Coxsackie; a brother, Milton Decker Jr. of New Orleans; a sister, Ruthmary Woodworth of East Jewett; many grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Prior to her retirement, Jean was a secretary for Greene County. She was a member of the First Reformed Church of Coxsackie, loved to draw and sew, and loved to spend time with her family.

Besides her parents, Jean was predeceased by a son, Michael.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at the W.C. Brady’s Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie today from 4 to 7pm.

Catskill – Angelo E. “Sonny” Balsano Sr., 71, of 297 Route 32A, Palenville, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, at Kingston Hospital after a long illness.

He was born May 29, 1932 in South Durham, the son of the late Chartles and Christine (Oliveri) Balsano.

Sonny served in the US Army and National Guard. He was an employee of IBM in Kingston for 15 years. Sonny also co-owned and operated Balsano Brothers Texaco of Catskill, and later was an employee of Catskill auto Parts until his retirement in 1998. Sonny was predeceased by a sister, Marie Balsano.

Balsano is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Dorothy M. (Patton) Balsano of Palenville; a daughter, Susan Sirianno and husband Daniel of Palenville; a son, Angelo E. Balsano Jr. of Catskill; three sisters, Eleanor Coutu; Johann Gagliardy and Charlotte Hyer, all of Catskill; a brother, Charles “Chuck” Balsano of Catskill; three grandchildren Jaclyn Sirianni, Jessica Sirianni and Daniel Sirianni; two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Kaden; and many nieces and nephews.

Glenmont – Theresa E. Kelly, 63, died Sept. 17, 2006 at her home. She was the daughter of Mercades Bollman Roberts of Pennsylvania and the late Edgar Roberts. Theresa received her BA from Mt. Mercy College on Pittsburgh and her MA from SUNY New Paltz. She was an active member of Alpha Nu. She taught English and Social Studies for 18 years in the Catskill High School.

Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Paul D. Kelly of Glenmont; daughter, Sarah A. Kelly of Rhode Island and son Christopher J. Kelly of Florida. She is the sister of Carol A. Scavotto of Florida and Jeffrey Roberts of Pennsylvania.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today at 9:30am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Delmar. Friends were invited to call Wednesday at the Durant Funeral Home, 17 Languish Place, Glenmont. Interment will be in the Cape Cod National Cemetery. Saugerties – Mary Pulling, 85, of Rowland Street and formerly of Pine Street in Cementon, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2006 at the Samuel S. Stratton Veteran’s Administration Hospital, Albany.

Born Feb. 17, 1921 in Massena, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Madeline Matutinovich Ceryanek.

A veteran of World War II, she served in the U.S. Army.

An area resident for many years, she was a former parishioner of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Cementon. She is currently a member of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Rock City Falls.

Predeceased by her husband, Merle Pulling in 1989, survivors include two daughters, Pamela Himmel of Ballston Spa and Virginia Pulling of Portland, Maine; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by brothers Philip and John Ceryanek, and sisters Catherine Ceryanek, Carmella Baran and Madeline Ceryaneck.

Her funeral service will be held 10am Friday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home Inc., corner of John and Lafayette Streets, Saugerties.

Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Catskill.

Greenville – Darcy L. Correia, 55, of Freehold died suddenly at her home in Sept. 20, 2006.

Mrs. Correia was born in Catskill on Oct. 31, 1950, she was the daughter of Edward and Mary (Lounsbury) Griffin.

She was a lifelong resident of the Town of Greenville. Darcy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and aunt. She loved animals especially birds and was a member of the Audubon Society.

Surviving her are her husband, James Correira of Freehold; a daughter, Vangie Van Auken and her husband James of Medusa; her grandchildren, Alexandria, Elizabeth, Edward and Samuel Van Auken of Medusa; her parents, Edward and Mary Griffin of Greenville; her grandfather, Burdett Griffin; her sister, Jyl DeGiovine and her husband Leonard of Greenville; her nephews, Ian, Aaron and Noel DeGiovine; and several other nieces and nephews.

As to Darcy’s wishes, she was cremated and will be interred in the Greenville Cemetery at the convenience of the family. All arrangements are under the direction of Cunningham Funeral Home, Route 81, Greenville.

Coxsackie – Suzanne M. Moore, 53, of 41 Freleigh Place, Village of Coxsackie, died Sept. 20, 2006, at her residence after a long illness.

She was born in East Meadow on March 4, 1953, and was the daughter of the late Edward and Ilene (Maurer) Peectsh.

Private cremation services will take place today at the Albany Rural Crematory in Menands.

Suzanne had been an area resident for most her life. She was employed at Betty Jean’s Dress Factory and with Laidlaw School Bus Transportation as a school bus aide. She loved to embroider and do needlepoint. She was an avid shopper, and she was dedicated to her family.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Rich, in 2003.

She is survived by a daughter, Lisa R. Moore of Coxsackie; a brother, Ralph Heinz of Selkirk; five sisters, Eilene Holmes of South Carolina, Barbara VanTassel of West Athens, Brenda Heinz of North Carolina, Linda Heinz of Georgia and Wilhelminia Salamak of Hannacroix; and three grandchildren, Kolby, Makayla and Reba.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the W.C. Brady’s Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie.

Interment of her remains will take place at a later date, in the Riverside Cemetery, Coxsackie, next to her late husband.

Born Oct. 20, 1923 in Eufau, Ala., he was the son of the late Flournoy and Anna Thomas Cooper.

An area resident for many years, he was a retired employee of Con Edison of New York, and was a steel worker as well.

Survivors include his wife Eloise; one son, Glenn Cooper Sr. of Kingston; one sister, Minnie Lewis of Kingston; one grandson and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Glenn Cooper Jr., and a brother, Flournoy Cooper.

His service will be held 10am today at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc. corner of John and Lafayette Streets, Saugerties.

Interment will be held in the Mount Marion Cemetery.

Hunter – Clyde F. Jensen, 81, of Haines Falls died Sept. 21, 2006 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson. He was born Sept. 7, 1925 to Oscar and Bessie Bunt Jensen in Tannersville. He was a plumber who worked at the former Police Recreation Center for 49 years and Hunter Mountain Ski Bowl for 15 years.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Convely Jensen of Haines Halls; a stepson, Thomas Joscelyn of Ulster Park, Kingston; a stepdaughter, Edith Bouton of Poland, Ky; two sisters, Doris Coll of Connecticut and Barbara O’Neil of Ravena; three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Amy and Tommy; and several nieces and nephews.

Hunter – Gregory P. Sergin, 56, died Sept. 15, 2006 in Hunter of heart failure.

He was born Sept. 17, 1949 in Queens. He was the son of the late George and Margaret Sergin.

He was recently appointed assistant general manager of Hunter Mountain after a distinguished career in the food service industry.

Survivors include his sister Patricia, a niece Nicole and a nephew Christopher.

Gregory was an extraordinary man whose warmth, love and friendship will be missed by one and all whose lives he touched.

Greenville – Carl Anderson, 84, of Greenville, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, at the Eden Park Nursing Home.

Born Jan. 23, 1922 in Sodermanland, Sweden, he was the son of the late Gustav & Thyra Eckstrom Anderson.

Mr. Anderson was a graduate of New Town High School in Elmhurst, Queens County, and the Alexander Hamilton Institute in New York City.

He served in the US Army during World War II serving in the Naples Foggia, North Apennines & the Rome Arno Campaigns. He received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

Mr. Anderson was also a professional drummer and was well known as a Scandanavian drummer.

He was past commander and life member of VFW Post 455 and a Mason for more than 40 years in the Valley Stream Lodge F&AM. He was  treasurer of his local church in Valley Stream and also donated his time at Christmas by playing Santa Claus throughout Nassau County. He also enjoyed baseball and coached and managed several teams.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Sandra Anderson of Southhampton, Long Island, and Carl E. and Ann Marie Anderson of Greenville; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Viola Thornquist Anderson.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4pm Tuesday at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville.

Funeral services will follow at 4pm.

As to his wishes, cremation will be at Albany Rural Cemetery with interment in the Greenville Cemetery.

Catskill – Catherine Chiesa, 87, formerly of New Baltimore, died Friday evening, Sept., 22, 2006 at the Albany County Nursing Home.

Born in the Bronx on March 4, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Inazio and Louise Gazzale.

She was married in the Bronx to Albert Chiesa, who died in 1991.

Catherine was the hostess at both Red’s Restaurant and the former Tick Tock in West Coxsackie for many years.

She was a member of the Ravena Seniors, the Senior Companion Program, St. Mary’s Church in Coxsackie and was a former Sunday School teacher.

She is survived by two sons, Paul W. Chiesa and wife Barbara of West Coxsackie, and Robert A, Chiesa and wife Susan of Latham; brother, Andrew Gazzale and wife Anita of West Coxsackie; grandchildren, Paul R., Michael J. (Joanna), Kenneth A., Matthew R. (Holly) and Christopher J. (Theresa) Chiesa; step-grandchildren, Norman (Paula) Mueller and Warren (Karen) Mueller; great-grandchildren, Paul, Andrew, Nicholas, Jamie, Amanda, Amy, Jenna, Sarah, William, Isabella, Anthony, Samuel and Natalie.

Born May 28, 1945 in Manhattan, he was the son of the late Dominick and Marion Falce Castano.

Mr. Castano owned and operated World Satellite of Catskill for many years.

He was a devoted Yankee fan and long-time supporter of Catskill Little League.

Survivors include his wife, Terri Castano of Catskill; five children, Christian Castano of Hauppauge, Long Island, Marion Castano of Catskill, Gary Castano Jr. of Catskill, Jennifer Kelly of Acra and John Kelly of Catskill; a sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and John Wilcox of Farmingdale, Long Island; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Albert Castano.

Coxsackie – Matthew J. Miller, 40, of 146 Kings Road, Coxsackie, died suddenly Sept. 25, 2006 as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born in Troy on Sept. 11, 1966, he was the son of Robert B. and Ruth A. (Wrzochalski) Miller.

Matthew was an avid craftsman; he loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He was self-employed as a contractor. He was a wonderful father and husband, and was deeply devoted to his family.

He is survived by his wife Stacey M. (Jones) Miller; two children Zachery M. and Amanda Lyn Miller, all of Coxsackie; three brothers, Martin of Troy, Mark of Albany and Michael of Ravena; two sisters, Michele Feiden of Clifton Park and Mary Wickkiser of Ravena; his grandmother, Helen Wzochalski of Watervliet; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, James and Charlotte Jones of Glenmont. Also surviving are the following brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Walter and Fran Jones of Colonie, Donna and Bert Carkmer of Glenmont, Lisa Marsh of Selkirk, Barbara Murray of Selkirk, Sherry Cavallaro of Lathan, Brenda and Gregg Warchol of Guilderland; also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.

John Joseph Mitchell
Refrigeration company employee

Cairo – John Joseph Mitchell, 92, of 1097 Dean St., Schenectady, formerly of Pine Tree Garden Apartments, Acra, died Sept. 26, 2006, at St. Claire’s Hospital, Schenectady, after a long illness.

He was born in Ireland, Sept. 9, 1914, and was the son of the late James and Rose (McDonald) Mitchell.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11am at the Sacred Heart Church, Cairo, with the Rev. John Murphy the celebrant.

Interment will follow in the family plot of St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Catskill.

Prior to his retirement, John was employed by the Manhattan Refrigeration Company of New York City. He had been an area resident of Cairo since 1979. He was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church, Cairo. During World War II he served with the Royal Air Force of England. He was an avid bird watcher and bicyclist.

He is survived by several cousins in Ireland, on of which is Tony Whyte, and a dear friend, Mary Jo Melendez of Schenectady.

Catherine Chiesa
Restaurant hostess

Catskill – Catherine Chiesa, 87, formerly of New Baltimore, died Friday evening, Sept. 22, 2006 at the Albany County Nursing Home.

Born in the Bronx on March 4, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Inazio and Louise Gazzale.

She was married in the Bronx to Albert Chiesa, who died in 1991.

Catherine was the hostess at both Red’s Restaurant and the former Tick Tock in West Coxsackie for many years.

She was a member of the Ravena Seniors, the Senior Companion Program, St. Mary’s Church in Coxsackie and was a former Sunday School teacher.

She is survived by two sons, Paul W. Chiesa and wife Barbara of West Coxsackie and Robert A. Chiesa and wife Susan of Latham; brother, Andrew Gazzale and wife Anita of West Coxsackie; grandchildren, Paul R., Michael J. (Joanna), Kenneth A., Matthew R. (Holly) and Christopher J. (Theresa) Chiesa; step-grandchildren, Norman (Paula) Mueller and Warren (Karen) Mueller; great-grandchildren, Paul, Andrew, Nicholas, Jamie, Amanda, Amy, Jenna, Sarah, William, Isabella, Anthony, Samuel and Natalie.

Calling hours will be 4-7pm Monday, Sept. 25, 2006 at the Sopris-Murray Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. John Moyna on Tuesday at 8:45pm at St. Mary’s Church, 80 Mansion St., Coxsackie.

Relatives and friends are respectively invited to attend.

The family suggests memorial donations to be made to either St. Mary’s Church or the First Reformed Church of West Coxsackie youth programs.

Donald H. Hathaway
Owned Lou’s Restaurant

Coxsackie – Donald H. Hathaway, 71, of 22 Mander Road, Corinth, formerly of 1955 River Road, New Baltimore, died suddenly Sept. 28, 2006 at his residence.

He was born in Albany Aug. 29, 1935, and was the son of the late Lemuel and Eva (Hallock) Hathaway.

Donald was previously employed by the Grand Union Co. of Albany, and the Coxsackie A&P Tea Co. In his later years he was also employed at the Coxsackie Correctional Facility in the food service department. Donald serviced with the US Navy from 1954 to 1968. He also owned and operated Lou’s restaurant and The Back Room Tavern, both located in Ravena.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara H. (Sherman) Hathaway of Corinth; a son Mark Hathaway of Cobleskill, six stepsons, Walter, Anthony, Salvatore, William, Robert and Michael Hardy. Also surviving are three stepdaughters, Charlene Hunlock, Julia Xexk and Tisha Wagner; his sister Beverly Meservey of Florida; two grandchildren, Matthew and Ashley; 20 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at the W.C. Brady’s Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie on Tuesday from 2-4pm and 6-8pm.

Funeral services will take place Wednesday at 11am at the W.C. Brady’s  sons, Inc., 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie, with the Rev. Retta Lykens, pastor of the Cairo United Methodist church officiating.

Private cremation will follow at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands.

John P. Longthon
Owned West End Tavern

Coxsackie – John Patrick “Pat” Longthon, 63, of Burgaw. Formerly of Coxsackie, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, at home.

He was born Aug. 15, 1943 in Albany, son of the late John and Clara Revoir Longthon.

He was owner and operator of Alley Cats Restaurant and West End Tavern in Burgaw for many years. Pat was enjoying retirement and loved metal detecting and treasure hunting. He was a member of the Carolina Relic and Beach Hunting Society.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Watson; two sons, Patrick Longthon of Willard and Dean Longthon of Catskill; two stepchildren, Marie Watson and Buddy Watson; a granddaughter, Katherine Marie Longthon; and a sister, Margaret Fuller and her husband Jack of Selkirk.

A memorial service will be held Oct. 14, 2006 from 1to 4pm at the Quarry Steak House, Route 81, West Coxsackie. For information call (518) 731-1040.

Denis O’Connell
Maintenance man at Gavin’s

Cairo – Denis O’Connell, 67, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born March 4, 1939 in Scartaghen, County Kerry, Ireland, the son of the late Denis and Elizabeth (O’Brien) O’Connell.

He came to the United States in 1960 and worked as a construction laborer. For the last 32 years he worked as a maintenance man at Gavin’s Golden Hill House in East Durham. 

In addition to his parents, Denis was predeceased by two brothers, William and Edmund.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Agnes of Athens; three daughters, Mary Firstiun and husband Michael of Catskill, Elizabeth Cruz and husband Michael of Florida and Agnes Noel of Athens; three grandchildren, Michael Firstiun, Keith Noel and Julianne Noel; three brothers, Patrick and wife Mary of Ireland, John and wife Julia of Ireland and Joe and wife Denise of Pennsylvania; five sisters, Brigid Faughnan of Queens, Mary Donohoe of Connecticut, Eileen Mulvey and husband Ray of Florida and Catherine Martin of Kingston; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Richards Funeral Home in Cairo from 7-9pm, Sunday, Oct. 1. The funeral Mass will take place at 11am, Monday, Oct. 2, art Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham, followed by interment in the Athens Rural Cemetery.
