Joan Anne Anis, Resident of Cairo

Cairo---Joan Anne Anis, 66, of Cairo, formerly of Windham, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2002 at her residence.

Born in Queens, Aug. 12, 1936, she was the daughter of James Hickey and Ann (Roesch) Hickey.

Ms. Anis was an instructor at the Culinary Institute of America.

Survivors included her children, Joy Martin, Karl, Clifton, and Steven Anshanslin; granddaughters, Bridget Joan Martin and Amanda Searles; brothers, Ken Kurz and James Hickey; sister, Valerie Lindstrom; and many dear friends.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, Sept. 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham.

Services will follow at the funeral home with the Rev. David Overton officiating.

Interment will follow immediately in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Ashland.

Doris N. Benson, Former co-owner of Oakwood Hotel

During World War II, Mrs. Benson helped with the war effort in Ohio. Formerly of Brooklyn and Merrick, L.I., Mrs. Benson was an executive secretary on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan prior to becoming a Palenville resident in 1972. She co-owned and operated the Oakwood Hotel in Palenville. She was predeceased by her husband Robert H. Benson Jr., on Feb. 5, 1992.

Mrs. Benson is survived by a son, Robert H. Benson III and wife Barbi, of West Valley; three daughters, Elyse Shanley, Lynne Benson-Oakley and Lois Arnold and husband Timothy of Palenville; a brother, Kenneth Johnson of Long Island; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and one on the way; and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call at the  Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held 8:45 a. m. Monday from the funeral home. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Palenville with the Rev. William J. Winkler, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Palenville Cemetery.

Joyce C. Harbig, Ameribag sales clerk

Rosendale---Joyce C. Harbig, 54, of DeWitt Mills Road, died suddenly Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002 at Benedictine Hospital. She was born Sept. 15, 1947 in Catskill, the daughter of Adele Dibble Taylor and the late Warren Taylor.

An area resident most of her life, she was employed as a sales clerk at Ameribag Co. in Kingston. She was formerly employed by Iron Mountain Records Center in Rosendale as an account manager for 20 years. She was a member of the Bloomington Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

In addition to her mother, of Cairo, she is survived by her husband of 36 years, William H. Harbig; two sons, William W. Harbig of Catskill and Darren D. Harbig of Kingston, a sister, Darlene Ann Moylan of Bloomington; and a brother David W. Taylor of Woodstock. She is also survived by a granddaughter, a goddaughter and several nephews.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the George J Moylan Funeral Home, Inc. Route 32, Rosendale. The Rev. Nicholas Miles, pastor of the United Reformed Church of Rosendale, will officiate. Cremation will be at the Wiltwyck Cemetery in Kingston.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The family suggests donations in her memory to the Commitment to Kids c/o Bloomington Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary, P. O. Box 223, Bloomington, N. Y. 12411.

James John McCormack, Greene County Planning Board member

Windham---James John McCormack, 58, of Lexington, died Sept. 4, 2002 at Albany Medical Center.

Born July 15,1944 in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Thomas Francis and Mary Agnes (nee Powers). He is survived by  his wife Janet (nee Losey); children Thomas, Kimberly and Courtney; grandchildren Morgan and Brenna; sisters Frances Clare Moog, Kathleen Miller, Margaret Wright and Patricia King.

Mr. McCormack was a customer engineer of IBM located in West Orange, N.J. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving from 1963-1964. He was a member of the Greene County Planning Board and the Town of Lexington Planning Board as well. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1675 located in Staten Island and the American Legion Post No. 338 located in Leonardo, N. J.  He also served as a member of the Leonardo, N.J. First Aid Squad.

Services will be conducted at the Decker Funeral Home, Windham, on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Cooke officiating, Cremation will follow at the Albany Rural Crematory in Albany.

Charles F. Cook Jr., Catskill resident

He was born Nov. 28, 1873 in Hudson, the son of Charles Cook Sr., and Gail (Millett) Big Mountain, both of Catskill.

Survivors include two sons, Alexander C. Cook of Catskill and Connor L. Hillicross of Coxsackie; a brother, Jack Winters of Catskill; grandparents, Jack and Geraldine Millett of Catskill; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be held Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Pastor Rick Snowden of the First Baptist Church of Catskill will be officiating.

Private cremation will be preformed at Park View Crematory in Schenectady.

Albina B. Mazzarese, Earlton resident

She was born Jan. 19, 1939 in Yonkers, the daughter of the late Michael J. and  Agnes (Boudoin) Hoscoe.

One of Mrs. Mazzarese’s hobbies was she loved crafts.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph M. Mazzarese of Earlton; two daughters, Theresa M. Dooley of North Carolina and Marion M. Vriale of Greenville; two sisters, Gloria Kirchbaum of Greenville and Helen Sherwood of North Carolina; and three grandchildren, Lauren Vriale, Danielle Vriale and Ryan Vriale, all of Greenville.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the W. C. Brady’s Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie.

Private cremation will take place at the convenience of the family Wednesday, Sept. 4 at the Albany Rural Crematory, Menands.

Clementine R. Yager, Former Hunter town clerk

Hunter---Clementine Raensch Yager, 97, of Tannersville, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002 at the Benedictine Hospital in Kingston after a brief illness.

Born June 7, 1905 in Tannersville, she was the daughter of Frank and Hattie Witcke Raensch.

Active her entire life, Mrs. Yager started work as a typesetter for a local newspaper. While her husband was head custodian at the Tannersville school, she provided after-practice refreshments to the athletic teams in their school basement apartment.

In addition to working as a postal clerk at the Tannersville Post Office, she was a moving force in the Tannersville Public Health having joined the group in 1949. In 1959 she was elected Town of Hunter clerk/tax collector, a position she held until 1975 when she was forced to retire at the age of 70. During her term as town clerk/tax collector she also serviced as police and ambulance dispatcher from 1968 until 1975. In July 1999 she was awarded a New York Senatorial Award for her many years of public service.

Survivors includes her children, Betty Garrison, Donald and his wife Joan, Beverly Feml and her husband Bruce, Charles (Bobby) and his wife Dawne, Frank (Dickie) and his wife Marjorie (Mickie), and Thomas and his wife Hope; 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her husband Charles; son-in-law Sanford Garrison; two grandchildren, Daniel Yager and Sherry Yager; brothers Edward and Richard; and sister Alice.

Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Aston Basagic Funeral Home, Main Street, Hunter.

Funeral services will be held 11 a. m. Thursday at the Kaaterskill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gregory Ferriss officiating.

Interment will follow in the family plot of the Evergreen Cemetery on Bloomer Road in Tannersville.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Tannersville Rescue Squad, Tannersville.

Sam Crocetti, Brooklyn Dodgers scout

Watertown, Mass.---Sam Crocetti, 84, died Aug. 5, 2002 in Watertown, Mass., after a short illness.

A former Boy’s Club executive director in Catskill during the 1950s and 1960s and then in Newton, Mass., Mr. Crocetti was well known for his leadership and fair play to both boys and girls.

As a Brooklyn Dodger scout he introduced the former Yankee pitcher Bill Stafford to the Brooklyn Dodgers’ staff and catcher Roy Campanula caught for him at a tryout before Stafford signed with the Yankees.

Survivors include his wife, Antoinette Martin, formerly of Catskill; two sons, Francis and Stephen; a daughter, Eileen and their families; a brother, Dominic Crocetti and his family; and 7 grandchildren.

Among his closest acquaintances and friends in the Catskill area and former Boy’s Club members are the Hon. George Cobb, the later attorney Charles Clay, Maynard Peloke, Marvin Simms and Joe Boy DiStefano.

Emma Kligerman, Area resident for three years 

Cairo---Emme Kligerman, 93, of the Martin Residence, Hudson, formerly of New York City and Cairo, died Sept. 3, 2002, at the Community Hospice at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.  

She was born in New York City on Feb. 13, 1909 and was the daughter of the late Charles and Emma (Lacomita) Camenish.

She was an area resident for three years.  

Graveside services will take place at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Riverside Cemetery, Rochelle Park, N.Y.

She is survived by two sons, Kenneth and daughter-in-law Maria Kligerman of Cairo and Michael Kligerman of Cairo; a daughter, Susan Kligerman of Florida; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Allen.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at the Richards Funeral Home, 383 Bross St., Cairo, from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5.

Charles P. Lucas, Memorial mass

He was predeceased by his parents Charles and Elizabeth Lucas and brother John Lucas, of Whitestone.

Carol S. Mason, Raised in Catskill

Jacksonville Beach, Fla.---Carol S. Mason, 66, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., beloved wife, mother and friend of many, died peacefully and comfortably at her home on Sept. 2, 2002 after a valiant and lengthy battle with mixed mullerian ovarian cancer. Her family was by her side.

She was born  Sept. 28,1935 in Albany, and raised in Catskill.

She graduated from Hood College in Frederick, Md., and Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing in Boston with a B. S. degree in Nursing. She lived in New Rochelle; Wooster, Ohio and Pittsford; before moving to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1993. She practiced her profession at MGH in Boston and New York Hospital in New York. She was also the school nurse at the Allendale-Columbia School in the city of Rochester from 1976 to 1986, her proudest professional accomplishments.

She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., the Republican Club of Ponte Vedra Beach, Baptist Medical Center-Beaches Auxiliary, Newcomers Alumnae and served as Vice President and photographer for the Longtime Newcomers Club of the Beaches.

Surviving family members include her husband, Kenneth B. Mason; daughter Teena (Marteena) Mason of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; son Kenneth B. Mason III, his wife Eileen Mason; and grandsons Ryan Charles and Scott Kenneth Mason of Valrico, Fla.; brother Martin C. Smith and sister Nancy S. Ursprung of Catskill; and half-brother Roger Smith of Clearwater, Fla., and Peter Smith of Palenville.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6 at the Quinn-Shalz Chapel.  Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Joan Bryan officiating.

Rita Thomas, Former Cairo supervisor’s secretary 

She was born in New York City on June 7, 1923, and was the daughter of the late August and Molly (Ryan) Richter.  

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, Cairo, and the Rev. Jeremiah Nunan, pastor, will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the family plot of St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Catskill.  

Mrs. Thomas was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo. She had been an area resident for the past 38 years. Prior to her retirement, she was an executive secretary for Brooks Brothers Company, Madison Avenue, New York City. She was also employed by the town of Cairo as secretary to the town supervisor.  

Mrs. Thomas is survived by her husband of 58 years, Frank A. Thomas of Acra; a daughter, Maureen R. Blankley of Cherry Valley and son-in-law Keith A. Blankley. She is also survived by a grandson, Albert A. Blankley.

Formerly of Brooklyn, Ms. Vaughn was a beautician for many years prior to her retirement. She was a Greene County resident since 2001. Ms. Vaughn was predeceased by two sisters, Thelma Dinkins and Sadie Dinkins; and two brothers, Louis Dinkins and Hercules Dinkins. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mary A. Donohue, Devoted wife and mother 

Greeneville---Mary A. Donohue, 95, of Norton Hill, died Sept. 5, 2002 at St. Patrick’s Home in the Bronx.  She was born in County Cork, Ireland on Dec. 13,1906, daughter of the late Andrew and Mini Horan. She was a homemaker and devoted wife and mother. Mary was also a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her husband James J. Donohue in 1978.

Surviving are her daughter Kathleen Donohue of New York City and her son, Brother James Donohue of Providence, R. I.

Services will be from the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville, on Monday, Sept.9, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Greenville. George Steindl, Proprietor of Nautical Way 

Catskill---George Steindl, 62, of 15 Bogardus Avenue, Catskill, died Friday evening, Sept. 6, 2002, at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

Born June 7, 1940 in Muehlacker, Germany, the son of the late Johann and Maria (Engel) Steindl.

Mr. Steindl was the proprietor of the Nautical Way Restaurant for many years prior to his retirement in 2000.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin A. Steindl of Purling and Scott E. Steindl of East Marion, Long Island; a sister, Renate Evelyn Steindl of Catskill; two brothers, John Steindl of Ireland and Viktor Steindl of Long Island; a grandson, Kevin A. Steindl Jr. of Purling; and many nieces and nephews.  

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Anna G. Ascanio, Cairo resident 

Cairo---Anna G. Ascanio, 77, of Columbia Greene Long Term Care Nursing Home and Cairo died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002 a the Community Hospice at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

Born Aug. 5, 1925 in Cementon, now Smith’s Landing, Ms. Ascanio lived there most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Abraham and Helen (Ponick) Ascanio.

Prior to her retirement Ms. Ascanio was employed as a professional sewing machine operator.

Survivors include two sisters, Mary Ascanio of Fairground Estates, Cairo, and Virginia Christman of Catskill; and three brothers, James, Stephen and George.

Beside her parents she was predeceased by Angeline Maurizio, Rose Luzeckis and Ethel Ascanio.

Relatives and friends called at the Richards Funeral Home, 383 Bross St., Cairo, Tuesday morning. Funeral service followed at the funeral home.

The Rev. Richard Jacobs of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church officiated.

Margaret O’Connor, Freehold resident 

Freehold---Margaret O’Connor, 68, of Freehold, formerly of the Bronx, died Sept. 9, 2002, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany after a brief illness.

She was born in the Bronx on June 3, 1934, the daughter of the late Michael and Margaret (Corbett) Mulvihill. 

Mrs. O’Connor was married to the late John O’Connor of Newcastlewest, County Limerick, Ireland, for 44 years.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Parish in East Durham, the Ancient Order of Hibernians (Women’s Division) and the Greenville Irish American Club.

For the past eight years, Mrs. O’Connor had been working at Gavin’s Golden Hill House in East Durham.

Survivors include her children, the Rev. Msgr, Desmond O’Connor of New York City, Brendan and his wife Susan of Mahopac, Aidan and his wife Bernadette of Freehold, Nuala Robinson and her husband Michael of Briarcliff Manor, Deirdre Giancotti and her husband Scott of Fishkill; Maura Fox and her husband James of Lake Mohegan, Sean and his wife Kathy of Coxsackie and Mairead O’Connor of the Bronx; and her beloved grandchildren, Kelley Giancotti, Cara and Patricia O’Connor, Erin and Kerri Ann Fox, Kevin, Michael, Thomas, Aidan, Sean Eoin and William O’Connor; her brother, Padraic Mulvihill and his wife, Mattie of Jacksonville, Fla.

Calling hours will be 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville.

The Greenville Irish American Club and Ancient Order of Hibernians will conduct the services at the funeral homer on Wednesday evening.

Services will be 10:15 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. from Our Lady of Knock Shrine, East Durham.

Interment will be in the Greenville Cemetery.

Lorraine Coon, Former nurse

Birmingham, Ala---Lorraine Macarelli Coon died on Aug. 21, 2002 at her home in Birmingham, Ala. She was born in Catskill on Oct. 12, 1926, the daughter of the late William Macarelli Sr. and step-mother Amelia Macarelli.

She was LPN for 25 yeas at Fairhaven Nursing Home.

Ms.  Coon is survived by her children, Denise, Linda and Billy, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother William Macarelli of Catskill, and a sister, Sandra Silk of California.

Vernon W. Stevens, Former Phillips Components machinist

Albany---Vernon Wayne Stevens, 55, of Catskill, a former 30-year resident of Coxsackie, died at the Community Hospice of Albany at 315 S. Manning Blvd., Tuesday evening, Sept. 10, 2002 surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Stevens was born July 21, 1947 in Sandusky, Ohio, the son of Mary (Hunter) Hess who survives in Crowley, Texas, and the late Ralph Stevens.  He was married on Sept. 15, 1873 to Doris (Cary) Stevens who survives at home.

Mr. Stevens served our country from 1965 to 1969 in the Coast Guard. He was employed by Phillips Components in Saugerties as a machinist until his retirement.

 In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by one son, Scott Stevens and his wife Brandy of Catskill; a brother, Joseph Stevens, and sister, Vivian Bailey, both of Crowley, Texas, and a sister, Susan, of Florida. He is also survived by  nieces and nephews.

A service to commemorate his life will be conducted by the Rev. Lee Hardgrove at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, 2002 at the Sopris Funeral Homes Inc. 11877 Route 9W, Coxsackie. Interment will follow in Chestnut Lawn Cemetery, New Baltimore. Relatives and friends are respectively invited to attend and may call on Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Hamilton P. Beall Jr., Retired director of Schoharie County Probation Dept.

Greenville---Hamilton P. Beall Jr., 80, of Potter Hollow, died at the DVA Medical Center in Albany on Sept. 11, 2002.

Born in Waco, Texas, on Dec. 30, 1921, he was the son of the late Hamilton and Bernice (Slaughter) Beall Sr.

He served in the U. S. Army during World War II, serving in Algeria-French Morocco, Rome-Arno, Sicily and the Tunisia campaigns. 

Mr. Beall was retired and had been the Director of Probation for the Schoharie County Department of Probation.

He was also a member of the Clark White Post No. 589 American Legion for 41 years and was a past president of the Empire State Horse Council.

Mr. Beall was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Ranzitti, and a grandson, Gregory Cotter.

Charlotte Anne Brunner, former Albany Medical Center Employee

Catskill--Charlotte Anne "Cookie" Brunner, 65, of Potic Mountain Road, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002 at Albany Medical Center where she had been a patient since Sept.8.

Mrs. Brunner was born in Cementon on march 27, 1937, to the late Frederick and Harriet Gardner Smith. She had been employed by American Thermostat, American Tree and Wreath and retired from Albany Medical Center where she was employed as a housekeeper. She was a life member of the Spinal Cord Society New York Region.

Services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. in the main chapel of Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill. The Rev. Richard Snowden, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate, with interment following in Catskill Rural Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to call at the funeral home on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mrs. Brunner is survived by her husband, John M. Brunner of Athens; four sons: George Mayr, Otto Mayr, John Mayr, and Joe Brunner, all of Catskill; two daughters: Mrs Fred (Rose) Sledzianowski and Donna Mayr, both of Catskill; five grandchildren: Steven Komaromi, Malinda Komaromi, Daniel Mayr, Gregory Mayr and Jacob Brunner; four sisters; Frances Lackie of Cairo, Helen Castle of Gilboa, Genevier Bittner of Kingston and Catherine Mangenilli of Albany; as well as several nieces and nephews, She was predeceased by two brothers, Eugene Smith and Charles Smith, and a sister, Rosemarie Smith.

Ernest Chester Hoelzer, World War 1 Vet

Coxsackie -- Ernest Chester Hoelzer, 105, of Cherrydale, Va., formerly of Coxsackie, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2002 at the Cherrydale Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Cherrydale, Va.

Born in New York City, Nov 13, 1896, he was the son of the late Frederick A. and Cornelia (Decker) Hoelzer.

Mr. Hoelzer was a retired electrical engineer. He served in the U.S. Army in World War 1. He was also a past member of the Masonic Lodge No. 250 of Long Island.

Calling hours are noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Wendy Steed, pastor of the Coxsackie United Methodist Church, officiating. 

Interment will follow in the family plot in the Riverside Cemetery, Coxsackie, next to his late wife, Florence, who died in 1989.

Emma B. Geerts, Born in Cairo

Staten Island ---Emma B. Geerts, 87, formerly of Coxsackie, died Friday, Sept. 13,2002, at the New Vanderbuilt Rehabilitation Nursing Home in Staten Island.

Born Feb. 9, 1915 in Cairo, she was  the daughter of the late Garfield and Nellie (Deyo) Burlett.

Before retirement, Mrs. Geerts worked at the American Valve Company in Coxsackie.

Survivors include five daughters, Mary Ellen Wolfson of St. Petersburg, Fla., Nancy Gantert of Coxsackie; Patrice Brogna of Staten Island; Emma Horn of Widefield, Colo; and Leanore Barror of Ravena; 21 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Mrs. Geerts was predeceased by her husband Anton Geerts Sr. and a son, Anton Jr., and a grandson, Anton Horn.

Calling hours will be 3 to 5 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the W. C. Brady’s Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St. Coxsackie.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Mary’s Church in Coxsackie, Father Richard Jacobs will be the celebrant.

He was the supervisor of the Department of Transportation in Newburgh.

Preston Hollow---Douglas C. Vaccaro, 54, of Preston Hollow, died suddenly at his home on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002. Mr. Vaccaro was born Dec. 2, 1947 in Port Chester. He was parts manager of Big “A” Auto Parts in White Plains for many years.

Edward Ellis Hoskins, Cairo resident

Born Sept. 20,1960 in Hartford, Conn., he was the son of the late Daniel and Mary (Ellis) Hoskins.

Mr. Hoskins was an area resident for eight years.  He loved to travel, he loved bicycle riding and he loved the field of artistry.

Survivors include his daughter, Laicee Eichler of Portland, Ore.; three brothers, Frederick of Rockville, Conn., Daniel Allen of Endfield, Conn., and William and his wife Sheila of South Cairo; a sister Rose (Mary Beth) Elko of Endfield, Conn.; several nieces and nephews; his companion, Adele Eicher of Eugene, Ore.; and a very dear friend, Robert White of Cairo.

Services will take place Saturday at noon at the Richards Funeral Home, 383 Bross St., Cairo, the Rev. Jeremiah Nunan, pastor of the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo, will officiate.

She was born in the Bronx on Sept. 15,1933, and was the daughter of the late Frederick and Anna (Hamburger) Engelhardt.

Albert Notarnicola, Avid skier, golfer and traveler

He was born Feb. 14,1936 in Catskill, the son of the late Donato and Margaret Notarnicola.

He served in the U. S. Army. He was employee of the International Business Machines in Kingston for over 24 years prior to his retirement in 1990.

Mr. Notarnicola was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Catskill. He was a avid skier, golfer and traveler.  He was  a Republican committeeman and a member of the board of directors at the Catskill Golf Club.

Mr. Notarnicola was predeceased by a daughter, Karen Ann Notarnicola, on June 9, 1985, and a brother, Anthony Notarnicola.

Mr. Notarnicola is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Emanuelsen Notarnicola of Catskill; a son, Robert S. Notarnicola of Revere, Mass.; a brother, Victor Notarnicola of Catskill; and  several nieces and nephews.

Charles W. Scardaci, Retired from the Mt. Vernon School system

He was born in Smithers, W. Va., April 19,1928, and was the son of the late Samuel and Anna (Pisano) Scardaci.

He was an area resident since 1993 and was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo. He was also member of the Third Order of St. Francis of Mt. Vernon, N.Y. While in the military, he served in the U. S. Marine Corps in World War II, and during the Korea Conflict he served in the U. S. Army. He is retired from the Mt. Vernon School System.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Margaret (Vance) Scardaci; his three sons; Russell and Daniel, both of Cairo, and Joseph of Yonkers; a sister-in-law, Thelma Scardaci, and a niece, Catherine Scardaci, both of Mt. Vernon; and several other nieces.

Private calling hours will take place in the Richards Funeral Home, 3893 Bross St., Cairo. Private Mass of the Christian Burial will take place at the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo.

Albina Hess, Former bookkeeper for Catskill Housing Authority

Hudson---Albina Hess, 77, of Catskill, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson where she had been a patient since Sept. 15.

She was born May 14, 1925 in Manhattan, the daughter of the late Paul and Veronica Kubinee. She was employed as a bookkeeper at the Housing Authority office on Hill Street in Catskill during the early 1960’s. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Coast Guard and the Ladies Auxiliary of Citizens Hose Co. No. 5 as well as the Catskill Yacht Club on West Main Street. She and her husband were avid boat enthusiasts.

Committal services will be held on Monday, Sept. 23 in St. Patrick’s Cemetery on North Jefferson Avenue. Those attending may meet at the Millspaugh Cremator Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights at 11 a.m. prior to the procession to the cemetery.

Mrs. Hess is survived by her husband, Cecil Hess of Catskill, as well as several friends and neighbors, including Katherine Rappleyea of South Cairo and Mr. and Mrs. Mark Jaeger of Catskill.

Hudson---Joseph T. Borfitz, 87, of 8 South Washington St., Athens, died Sept. 19, 2002, at Community Hospice at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

She was born in Catskill on Sept. 14,1915 and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Urban) Styga. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Richards Funeral Home, 28 North Vernon St., Athens.

The Rev. Father Richard Doyle, pastor of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church of Athens, will officiate.  Interment will follow next to her late husband Eugene in the family plot of the Athens Rural Cemetery.

Mrs. Borfitz, at the age of 19, moved from Athens to Queens with her husband Eugene, In 1966, Joseph moved back to Athens to set up home.  She was also a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church.

Mrs. Borfitz is survived by her daughter, Joan Borfitz of Athens; a son, Irving Borfitz of New Hyde Park; a brother, Michael Styga of Coxsackie; and three grandchildren, Donna  Graham; Debra Conboy and Daniel Borfitz and two great-grandchildren, Caitlin and Daniel Graham.

Herbert A. Helmedach, Former owner of Greenville Polishing

Mr. Helmedach was retired and the former owner of Greenville Polishing in Rensselaerville. He served his country in the U. S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and was a former member of the Catskill Moose and Greenville Rotary Club.

Surviving are the wife, Lorrie (Winn) Helmedach; his daughters, Joyce A Moorehouse, and her fiancé Peter Smith of Hudson, Patricia Lee of Rensselaerville, Tina M. Sisson and her fiancé Charles Carroll of Westerlo. Diane Davis, and her husband Robert, of Westerlo, Brenda Heath and her husband Gerald of Medusa, Dawn Utter and her husband Donald of Rensselaerville, Ann Berryann of Lake Lizerne, and Lorinda Burnham and her husband Henry of Westerlo.

Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and a sister, Carol Francis of Round Top. He was predeceased by a son , Herbert Helmedach Jr., and a brother Henry Helmedach.

Marilyn Holliday, Lifelong Catskill resident

Hudson---Marilyn Holliday, 59,of 17 Walnut St., Catskill, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.  She was born June 21,1943 in Catskill, the son (daughter?)of Mary Ann (Furyck) Cotich of Catskill and the late Anthony M. Cotich Sr.

A lifelong Catskill resident, she was a member of both St. Patrick’s Church and St. Luke’s Church of Catskill. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles E. Holliday Jr., on July 8, 1996; and a brother Anthony M. Cotich Jr.

Besides her mother, Marilyn is survived by two sons, Jeffery C. Holliday and Joel L. Holliday, both of Catskill; a daughter-in-law, Lori Holliday of Catskill; a brother, Stephen P. Cotich of West Coxsackie; one granddaughter, Kaylyn Nicole Holliday of Catskill; and several aunts, uncles cousins, nieces and nephews.

As per her wishes, she will be cremated at Park View Crematory in Schenectady. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Born June 16, 1913 in Pine Plains, N. Y., she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Agnes (Harper) Rockefeller.

Mrs. Shultz was a communicant at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Catskill.

She was an employee of the former J. J. Newberry’s Department Store in Catskill prior to her retirement.

Survivors include two daughters, Winifred Darling and husband Martin of Catskill and Ellen Andrews and husband Robert of Catskill; a son, Floyd H. (Jake) Shutlz Jr., and wife Gary, of Marstens Mills, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Colleen Mosley, Kathy Brandt, Doreen Darling Vail, Billy Shultz, Matt Shultz, Alyce Andrews, and Bobby Andres; four great-grandchildren and many cousins nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Shultz was predeceased by her husband Floyd H. Shutlz Sr. on Sept. 11,1972; five sisters, Sarah Williams, Theresa Kenny, Gladys Hotaling, Margaret Reilly, and Louella Steenburn.

Tannersville—Joseph C. Scano, 70, of Tannersville, died on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002 at his residence.

Born on July 16,1932, in the Bronx, he was the son of the later Constantino and the late Antionette Poggio Scano.

Mr. Scano was married to Joy (Emery) Scano. Along with his wife, Mr. Scano is survived by his sons, Anthony and Joseph; his brother, Anthony; his sister, Jeanie Castro; and his grandson, Joseph Anthony.

Mr. Scano was employed as a machinist for the Environmental Protection Agency of the City of New York. Cremation took place Monday, Sept. 23, 2002 at the Wiltwyck Crematory in Kingston.  A memorial service will be held at he convenience of the family.

Mildred Marie Guarino       Knitting mill seamstress

Haines Falls—Mildred Marie Guarino, 95, of Haines Falls, formerly of Masbeth, Queens, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002 at her home.

Born April 1907 in New York City, she was the daughter of Antonio and Rosa Creparola Papa.

She was a seamstress who worked in a knitting mill. She loved bingo and was also a homemaker.

Survivors include her son, Rocco, and his wife Patricia of Haines Falls; four grandchildren, Rocco Jr., Theresa, Gina and Daniel; and great-grandchildren, Joseph, Rocco and Gabriella.

Mr. Guarino was predeceased by her husband Rocco in 1995.

Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Aston-Basagic Funeral Home, Main Street, Hunter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26 at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Haines Falls. Officiating will be the Rev. Anthony Motta.

Peter Buckhoff      Former Carter’s Foundry employee

Coxsackie—Peter Buckhoff, 81, of Riverside Avenue, Village of Coxsackie, died at his residence Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, in the same home where he was born on April 20, 21, to the late Egnatius and Isabel (Simeon) Buckhoff.

He was a graduate of the Coxsackie High School and attended Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.  Mr. Buckhoff was married on May 27, 1945 in St. Mary’s Church, Coxsackie, to the former Mary Misuraca, who survives at home.

Mr. Buckhoff served our nation during World War II in the U. S. Navy as a chief boatswain mate and he was also a deep-sea diver.

He was a machinist for the State Wire and Cable and retired in 1986 from Carter’s Foundry, both in Coxsackie.

Mr. Buckhoff was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and a  member of the American Legion Post No. 166. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their children: Kenneth (Robin) Buckhoff of Athens, Barbara (Bill) Nestlen of Athens, and Anne (Ted) Berrien of Interlackern: five grandchildren, Colleen, Tina and Bill Nestlen also Lee and Jason Berrien; his brother John Buckhoff of Schenectady and two sisters Isabel Slagus of Pennsylvania and Ann Weller of Scotia. He was predeceased by his brother Michael Buckhoff. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A memorial mass will be celebrated by the Rev. John Moyna, 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002 at St. Mary’s Church, Mansion Street, Coxsackie. Relatives, friends and members American Legion Post 166 are respectfully invited to attend. There will be no calling hours.

Interment will take place at later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Coxsackie. Mr. Buckhoff has graciously donated his remains to the anatomical gift program of the Albany Medical College. Memorial donations in Mr. Buckhoff name may be made to Community Hospice, 1 Liberty St., Catskill.

Louise B. Duncan      Rivertown Senior Citizens member

Athens—Louise B. (Garrison) Duncan, 90, died Sept. 26, 2002 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

She was born in Athens on Jan. 10, 1912 and was the daughter of the late Charles and Gladys (Travis) Garrison.

She was an active member of the Rivertown Senior Citizens.

Private cremation will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002 at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Athens at graveside. The Rev. Kathleen Hart Brumm, pastor of the First Reformed Church of Athens, will officiate.

She is survived by her son, James H. Duncan of Troy; and two daughters, Sheryl Burns of Saugerties and Marilyn Esposito of Ravena. He is also survived by five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her son, Donald W. Duncan. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Richards Funeral Home, 28 North Vernon St., Athens.

Lawrence E. Lamanec        Avid hunter, gardener, fisherman and creative cook

Cairo—Lawrence E. Lamanec, 59, died Sept. 24, 2002 as a result of a tractor accident.

A lifelong resident of Cairo and Purling, Mr. Lamanec was born on April 30, 1943, at Catskill Memorial Hospital to Doris (Gallon) and Julius Lamanec.

Mr. Lamanec attended Cairo Central School until joining the U. S. Navy in May of 1960. He served aboard the USS Preserver and was honorably discharged in April 1964 when he joined the Cairo Police Force as Deputy Constable.  He was a former Boy Scout leader and volunteer fireman.

In June of 1988 he retired after 30 years as a millwright in local No. 740. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, gardener and creative cook.

He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, the former Judy Patridge of Purling, his mother Doris Lamanec of Acra, son Larry and daughter-in-law Diane of Ashland, daughter Laura and son-in-law Rudy Bryan of Lutz, Fla., grandchildren Julie and Natalie Bryan and Lawrence Lamanec, a brother Tracy and sister-in-law Eileen Lamanec of Schenectady and Purling, and aunt Rose Shepherd of Cairo and an uncle Paul Gallon of Albany. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and many caring friends. He was predeceased by his father Julius Lamanec 15 year ago.

Mr. Lamanec will be remembered as a loving family man and by his friends as “Larry” who gave so generously of his time, artistic talent and unique sense of humor.

Relative and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at the Richards Funeral Home, 383 Bross St., Cairo, on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 1 p.m. to 4 .m.

Funeral services will take place at the Cairo United Methodist Church, Main Street, Cairo, on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Retta Lykens, pastor of the Cairo United Methodist Church, officiating. The day of the funeral, everyone is asked to meet at the church.

Private cremation will take place on Monday at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands, In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Ronald McDonald House or the Cairo Rescue Squad.

Eva Sylvia Nielsen       Hensonville resident

Hensonville—Eva Sylvia Neilsen, 90, of Hensonville, died Saturday, Sept. 28, at Greene Manor Adult Home in Ghent.

She was born in Helkensie, Finland, the daughter of Hjlmar and Ida (Nummela) Ahonious.

She worked for many years at the  A & P from which she retired. After retirement, she enjoyed several years as a resident of Florida before moving back to Hensonville with her daughter and son-in-law.

She was a past member of the Order of Eastern Star, Blue Lodge, New York City.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Frederick (Barbara) Decker of Hensonville, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Neilsen was predeceased by her husband Carl Christian and her son, John Christian.

Funeral services were held at the Decker Funeral Home, Windham, with Rev. Robert Johnson and Fr. Donald Doyle officiating.

Interment was at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Order of the Eastern Star No. 237, Main St. Windham, N.Y., 12496.
