William E. Collins
Retired Bank President

William E. (Bill) Collins, age 83, passed away on March 17, 2009, at home in the Town of Kinderhook surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer. The family would like to thank the Community Hospice of Columbia-Greene for the support that allowed Bill to be cared for at home during his illness.

Bill was born April 26, 1925 in New York City to William Collins and Agnes (Harkin) Collins; his beloved older sister Anne (Nancy) Rudolf died 2 years ago. He grew up in the Queens section of Floral Park, NY.

Bill served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a tail gunner in the Pacific during WWII.  He told the story of being stationed on the island if Tinian near the end of the war when everyone was talking about a plane that was being set up to carry just one bomb; the young soldiers thought the idea of a plane carrying a single bomb was crazy.  They later found out that this single bomb, dropped on Hiroshima, was instrumental in ending the long war.

Upon returning from the service in 1945, Bill attended Hofstra University and after graduation went to work for the FDIC. He married the love of his life, Joan F. Lawler, in 1954 and they had four children. The family moved from Long island to Kinderhook in 1966 when Bill became a supervisor for the NYS Banking Department. While working for the Banking Department, Bill completed his Master[‘]s Degree in Finance at SUNY Albany. After retirement from the State in 1980, Bill was asked to become the president of Hudson City Savings Institution. At the time the bank was involved in merger talks with another bank, but Bill felt he could make the bank profitable without the merger and save many local jobs. A few years after he took the helm, HCSI was one of the most profitable savings banks in the state. Bill retired from the bank in 1990 and lived in Florida most of the year, be he remained on the board of HCSI through its change to Hudson River Bank & Trust, and the merger with First Niagara. After the First Niagara merger, he retired from the board.

Bill and Joan lived in North Chatham for many years when not in Florida and worked at restoring their historic cottage. Two years ago they moved to Brookfield Farm Lane in the town of Kinderhook where Bill spent many hours on various projects in his workshop when not vacationing in sunny Florida.

In 2003, Bill and Joan became an integral part of starting a Christian school in Valatie, the Academy of Christian Leadership. Their generosity provided the seed money necessary to begin the school, where the mission is to provide a classical Christian education option to the community. Bill was always interested in helping people; he spent many years on the board of Columbia Memorial Hospital where he was committed to improving care to benefit local residents.

Bill is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan Collins and his four children: Patricia Cavagnaro and son-in-law Larry Cavagnaro; Ann (Nancy) Schwartz of Charlotte, NC; Joan Collins and son-in-law George Yellot of Pottsdam; and William R. Collins and daughter-in-law Debbie Sutherland Collins of New York City. He has seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews and extended family.
