CATSKILL – Dorothy Mary Barra, 85, long-time Catskill and Barefoot Bay , Fla. resident, died June 29, 2007 at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston .

Born July 15, 1921 in Climax, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mabel (Wagenbaugh) Yannone.

She was a beautician for more than 25 years at Arthur’s Beauty Salon in Catskill prior to her retirement.  She has been a Barefoot Bay, Fla. resident for the past 20 years, and recently returned to the Catskill area.

She is survived by her husband, Anthony “Bub” Barra of Catskill; sons, Joseph and wife Cherly of Pine Bush, Michael and wife Consuelo of Middletown, and Anthony “Bub” Barra Jr. and wife Jill of Newport; daughter, Patricia Hallam and husband Donn of Saugerties; brothers, Joseph Yannone and wife Bea of Catskill, and Robert Yannone and wife Gloria of Catskill; sister, Laura Romak of Catskill; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights , Catskill, on Monday from 4-8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. John J. Murphy officiating. Interment will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Catskill.

Memorials in her name may be made to the American Heart Association.

JOSEPH   P. MURPHY

KINGSTON – Joseph P. Murphy, 66, of Deer Run Road , died June 29, 2007 at the Kingston City Hospital after a brief illness.

Born Jan 2, 1941 in Boston , Mass. , he was the son of the late Charles J. and Mary McVeigh Murphy.

An area resident since 1993, he formerly resided in Wilmington , Del.

He was a graduate of St. Peter’s High School in New Castle , Del. , and joined the U.S. Navy.  He served aboard the U.S.S. Forrestal during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal upon discharge.  

He was a graduate of the culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park in 1965 and began a career in food service in the supervisory capacity in many areas including Saudi Arabia .  He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hiking in the mountains, running and scuba diving.

He is survived by a brother, Charles J. Murphy of Maryland ; sister, Elizabeth A. Murphy of Delaware ; his companion, Trudy Lee of Kingston ; and several aunts and uncles.

His funeral procession will form 12:15 p.m. Monday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home Inc., corner of John and Lafayette Streets, thence to St. Catherine Labouree Roman Catholic Church where a 1 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered.

Interment will be in Wilmington , Del.

Avid woodworker

SMITHS LANDING – Ronald S. Schlenker, 63, of Pine Street , died suddenly June 29, 2007 at his residence.

Born May 25, 1944 in Kingston , he was the son of Ellen Crandall Schlenker and the late Spence Schlenker.

A U.S. Army Veteran, he was a lifetime area resident.

He was a former employee of F.L. Russell Corporation in Mount Marion , Vulcan Information Packaging of Saugerties and was currently employed at Ginsberg Corporation in Hudson .

He was a member of the Cementon Sportsmans Club. An avid woodworker, he enjoyed the fine art of home brewing and each year hosted an Octoberfest with friends, neighbors and family.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Carol; five sons, Michael R. of Berkley , Mich. , Christopher J. of Athens, Joseph S. of Leeds, Jason J. of Miami and Matthew K. Schlenker of Catskill; brothers, Christian of North Carolina and Allan Schlenker of Alabama; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral procession will form 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home Inc., corner of John and Lafayette streets, thence to St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church where a 9 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered.

Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

WILLIAM LINSCOTT
Vietnam veteran

CATSKILL – William J. “Bill” Linscott, 63, of Valley Road , Catskill, died Thursday, June 28, 2007, at home following a brief illness.

Born Jan. 9, 1944 in Troy , he was the son of the late Gordon and Lillian Powers Linscott.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Linscott was a member of Sullivan-Teator VFW Post 770 in Catskill.  He was also a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle enthusiast and loved animals.

Survivors include his wife, Marilynn Nelson Linscott of Catskill; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Kathryn and Robert Linscott of Catskill, Rebecca Linscott of Catskill and Laura and Pierre Nacinales of California; seven grandchildren, James, Emily, Bryan and Tristian Komaromi, Bailey and Jordan Linscott and Traejin Ivery; four nieces and nephews; and many friends and extended family. 

He was predeceased by a brother, George Linscott.

A memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, Jefferson Heights, Catskill with the Rev. Joyce Wilkerson, pastor of the Catskill United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment with full military honors will be in the Town of Catskill Cemetery Veterans Section .

Memorial contributions may be made to the Community-Hospice of Columbia Greene or the Columbia-Greene Humane Society.

SMITHS LANDING – Ronald S. Schlenker, 63, of Pine Street , died suddenly June 29, 2007 at his residence.

RED HOOK – Patricia M. Miller, 71, of Red Hook, died Sunday, July 1, 2007, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson .

Born Oct. 31, 1935 in Hudson , she was the daughter of the late Lawrence J. and Helen Jastrombeck Clapper.

She attended St. Mary’s Academy in Hudson and continued her education at St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated with a registered nursing degree.

On January 4, 1958 in Hudson , she married Kenneth J. Miller, who predeceased her on July 17, 1998.

Mrs. Miller worked as a registered nurse prior to raising her family.  She was then employed as a bookkeeper for the 1st National Bank of Red Hook, and then at the 1st National Bank of Rhinebeck before retiring.  

Survivors include a son, Michael Miller of Lehigh Acres, Fla., four daughters and three sons-in-law, Karen Miller of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Lori and David Simmons of Conway, S.C., Ellen and Jerry Camisasca of Elizaville and Maureen and Jack Gregory of Germantown; eight grandchildren, Adam Mergenthaler and wife Marie, Jeremy Mergenthaler and wife Julie, Matthew Mergenthaler and wife Amy, Brittney Coon, Rachel and Alexis Gregory and Paige and Kelly Camisasca; and seven great-grandchildren.  

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Burnett & White Funeral Home, 7461 S. Broadway, Red Hook.  

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.  

Burial will be at St. Paul ’s Lutheran Cemetery , Red Hook.

JOHN A. MORGAN
Wormuth Foundry employee

ATHENS – John A. Morgan, 80, of Leeds Athens Road , died Monday, July 2, 2007, at Kaaterskill Care Nursing Home, Catskill.

Born Dec. 22, 1926 in Coxsackie, he was the son of the late Carlton and Alta Patterson Morgan.

At one time, Mr. Morgan was employed by the Wormuth Foundry in Athens .

He attended many Bible studies and supported financially three churches in Athens .

Survivors include his love and best friend, Amy McDevitt of Athens ; a sister, Lucille VanStenburgh of Kingston ; two best friends, John Hallenbeck and Kay Palmateer, both of Athens ; and many nieces and nephews.

Private cremation will take place today at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Interment of his cremains will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Athens .

Arrangements are under the direction of the Richards Funeral Home, Athens .

MARY E. RIVITUSO
WWII riveter

CATSKILL – Mary Elizabeth Rivituso, 81, of Catskill, died Monday, July 2, 2007 at home after a short illness.

Born Nov. 25, 1925 in Athens , she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine Apa Pulice.

She worked at Allie Boat Company as a riveter making life boats during World War II.  Her name was inscribed at the WWII Monument in Washington , D.C.

She had a passion for cooking.

Survivors include her husband of more than 59 years, Jack P. Rivituso of Catskill; a daughter and son-in-law Deborah and Ronald Smith of Catskill; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Meg Rivituso of Rotterdam and John and Valerie Rivituso of Clifton Park; four brothers, Joseph Pulice of Columbiaville and Frank Pulice, James Pulice and  John Pulice, all of Athens; three  sisters, Marguerite Masselli of Athens, Jeannette Fusco of Catskill and Cathy Craft of Saugerties; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Michael Pulice; and two sisters, Gilda Martin and Rose Pulice.

Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights , Catskill.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, followed by a noon Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, Bridge Street, Catskill with the Rev. Jeremiah Nunan officiating.

Private cremation will be performed at Park View Cemetery in Schenectady .

Entombment will be at Memories Garden in Colonie.

MARY LOUISA SCHENCK

SHAKOPEE, Minn. – Mary Louisa Whitbeck Schenck, 88, died Monday, April 16, 2007, in Shakopee.

Born March 6, 1919 in the village of Ravena , town of Coeymans , she was the daughter of the late Jacob L. and Lousia M. Kruger Whitbeck.

She grew up and lived in the Ravena area and graduated from Ravena High School in 1937, where she earned a college entrance certificate to the University at Albany .

In 1943, she married W. Allan Schenck.  They lived in New York City for three years, before moving to the Hunterdon County area in New Jersey .

Mrs. Schenck was a PTA member and was active with her sons in scouting as a den mother.  She was elected to the Flemington Raritan school board in 1963 and was proud of her initiative to have quality reproductions of art masterpieces in grade school classrooms.

In 1966, she and her husband moved to the Fox Valley in Wisconsin due to her husband’s career with the Reigel Paper Company.  There she took up curling and became a “Cheese head,” rooting for the Greene Bay Packers.

While in Wisconsin , she began a real estate career in residential sales and appraisal.

In 1982, she moved to Fort Myers , Fla. , where she continued her real estate career at Gateway.  While living in a town home in Myer Lee Gardens , she continued golf and swimming and began shell collecting and started ballroom dancing.  She also kept at her bridge playing and earned master points in competition,

Mrs. Schenck traveled internationally with friends and always returned with native artwork and artifacts that she collected and gave as gifts.  She also skied in the Rockies, Europe and toured the Mediterranean; Indonesia and the Far East intrigued her the most.

She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, Scrabble, gardening, camping and bowling and was an avid bridge player.

She lived for a short while at the Palms of Fort Myers and Calusa Harbor assisted living centers.  In December 2005, she fell and broke her hip and in May 2006, she moved to Shakopee Friendship Manor in Shakoope.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Mary Schenck of Jordan , Minn. ; and Robert and Lynn Schenck of St. Louis , MO. ; and a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Mark Feit of Indonesia .

She was predeceased by a brother, Roy; and a sister, Elizabeth.

Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Town of Catskill Cemetery with the Rev. Joyce Wilkerson, pastor of the Catskill United Methodist Church , officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, Catskill.

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. – Karen J. West, 59, of New Port Richey, died Monday, June 25, 2007, at Marliere Care Center in New Port Richey.

Born in Kingston , she moved to Florida from Athens .  

Survivors include her parents, Robert and Mildred West of New Port Richey; a brother, Robert of Hobart, Delaware County; a sister, Diana Blyth of Odessa , Fla. ; and many nieces and nephews.  

Funeral services were held Friday from the Thomas D. Dobies Funeral Home in New Port Richey.

Interment was in the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell , Fla.

LEROY D. COLWELL
Retired U.S. Air Force

CATSKILL – Leroy Delos Colwell, beloved husband and father, 78, of Route 385, Athens , died Monday, July 2, 2007 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson .

He was born July 16, 1928 in Albany , NY , the son of the late Clarence and Murial (Gritmon) Colwell.

Leroy served in the United States Air Force for 20 years prior to 1968.  He served two tours of duty in the Vietnam Conflict, specializing in radar reconnaissance.

Leroy later was an employee of Amos Post Company in Catskill for 20 years before he retired in 1990.

Leroy loved woodmaking, tinkering with old cars and took great pride in taking care of his lawns and gardens.

Mr. Colwell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marilyn (Shaw) Colwell of Athens; two daughters, Katy Halse and husband Mark of Catskill, Holly Vanni and husband Nicholas of New York City; a brother, Clarence “Clancy” Colwell and wife Ann of Hillsboro, N.C.; a sister, Donna Ames and husband Earl of Coxsackie; six grandchildren, Timothy P. Halse, Chase J. Halse, Andrew C. Halse, Alicia A. Halse, Gregory B. Vanni and Everett Vanni; and many nieces and nephews.

Leroy was predeceased by two sisters, Barbara Shanks Powers and Marilyn Ferro.

Relatives and friends may call at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights , Catskill , NY 12414 on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, followed by a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, Route 38, Athens .  Fr. Richard Shaw will be officiating.

Interment with full military honors will follow at the Town of Catskill Cemetery Veterans Section .

VERNER JOHN BAUMBERGER
WW II veteran

ROUND TOP – Verner John Baumberger, 91, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and Catholic gentleman, of Round Top, NY, died Wednesday, July 4, 2007, at home after a five-month battle with cancer.

He was born February 20, 1916, in Huntimer , SD , the son of the late Jakob and Alice (Huntimer) Baumberger.

He served in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant in the Signal Corps during World War II.  

Following the war, he worked as district manager for DeKalb Research, Inc., in Iowa , Minnesota , Colorado , Wyoming , and Nebraska and retired after thirty-five years.

Mr. Baumberger is survived by his wife of sixty years, Berneith (Siemonsma) Baumberger;  two sons , Father Paul Baumberger of Round Top, and Joseph and wife Irma of Fort Morgan, CO; two daughters, Mary Berger and husband Joseph of Round Top, and Anne Baumberger of Round Top; and two grandchildren, Jakob Berger and Christina Baumberger.

Relatives and friends may call at Richard’s Funeral Home, Cairo , NY , between the hours of 6 and 9 p.m., on Friday, July 6.  Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 8 p.m. during the visiting hours.

A Solemn Requiem High Mass will be offered for the repose of Mr. Baumberger’s soul on Saturday, July 7, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Chapel, St. Joseph ’s Novitiate, Round Top, with interment at St. Joseph ’s Cemetery in Round Top.

EARLTON – Randy Curless, 30 of Earlton, died at St. Peter’s Hospital on July 4, 2007.

A big “teddy bear,” he was a friend to all he met and will be missed.

Survivors include his mother, Linda Curless-Maurer; siblings, Tony, Anthony, Robert and David Dingman, Joey Merrit, Christopher Maurer and Jennifer Cline; step-fathers, Anthony Dingman Sr., and George Maurer; sister-in-law, Jennifer Maurer; nieces, Isis Dingman and Chloe Maurer; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his grandparents, Eugene and Irene (Busch) Curless Sr.

Graveside services will be 7 p.m. Monday in the Rensselaerville Cemetery .

Arrangements are with the Cunningham Funeral Home, Greenville .

FREDERICK R. RHOADES
Retired NYPD officer

CAIRO – Frederick R. Rhoades, 81, of 46 County Estates , South Cairo , died Thursday, June 28, 2007 at home after a long illness.

He was born Jan. 5, 2007 (probably a typo and should have been 1926) in the Bronx , N.Y., the son of the late Frederick and Blanche (Kingsley) Rhoades Sr.

Fred served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations.  He was a police officer for the New York City Police Department for 20 years of dedicated service prior to his retirement in 1977.  Formerly of Brooklyn , and a longtime Greene county summer resident, Fred has been a Catskill area resident since 1977. He was a past-district commander and a life member of Sullivan-Teator VFW Post 770 in Catskill.

He was predeceased by a brother, Benjamin Rhoades.

Frederick was a devoted husband and father.  He is survived by his loving wife Frances (Candilora) Rhoades of South Cairo.  They would have celebrated their 60th anniversary on July 13, 2007.

Mr. Rhoades is also survived by three children, Patricia Kane and husband Dan of East Durham; Jimmy Rhoades of South Cairo and Robert Rhoades and wife Elaine of Connecticut; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Danielle, and Maureen Kane, Jessica, Matthew and Kristina Rhoades; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Salvatore and Marie Candilora of Staten Island; several cousin, nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call at Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights , Catskill, on Saturday, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, Father Jeremiah Nunan, pastor, Sacred Heart Church of Cairo will be officiating.

Cremation will be preformed at Park View Cemetery in Schenectady .

Interment will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Town of Catskill Cemetery Veterans Section .

WW II Veteran

CAIRO – Milton Schlesinger, of Cairo , NY passed away on July 4, 2007.

He was born on November 27, 1917 in Manhattan .  

He served with the United States Navy in the South Pacific, during WW II.  

He was employed as National sales Manager for Sau-Sea Foods and in retirement worked for General Mills.  He was a member of the Cairo Main Street Task Force.  

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Hildegard Schlesinger; his daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Ewald Schwarzenegger, David and Andrew Schlesinger of Texas; grandsons, Morgan, Eric and Aaron Schwarzenegger, David and Andrew Schlesinger and great-grandsons Sloan Schwarzenegger and Adian Schlesinger.  

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Richards Funeral Home, 20 Bross Street , Cairo , NY 12413 .

CATSKILL – Catherine White, 82, of 53 Broome Street , Catskill, died Wednesday, July 4, 2007 at Kaaterskill Care in Catskill.

She was born May 31, 1925 in Cementon, the daughter of the late Wasyl and July Furyk.

Catherine was an employee of Helene’s Dress Shop, the Atlanta Knitting Mills and Catskill Central Schools prior to her retirement.

She enjoyed gardening and flowers.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Catskill.

Mrs. White is survived by two daughters, Karen White of Purling and Sheila Moon and husband Roy of Albany; three sons, John White Jr., Donald White and Christopher White all of Catskill; a brother, Paul Furyk; three sisters, Julia Dennison of Kingston, Veronica Whitbeck of Catskill and Carol Furyk of Catskill; six grandchildren, Michael Murphy and wife Kim of Cairo, Derek Spada and wife Rana of Kingston, Kelly Smith and husband Tim of Catskill, Frank Ford III of Catskill, Kenneth Ford of Hudson, Robert Ford of Palenville; and four great-grandchildren, Blake Murphy, Brady Murphy, Taran Smith and Gianna Ford; and many nieces and nephews.

Catherine was predeceased by her husband John White on August 13, 2006; a daughter Patricia White on October 2, 1981 and eight brothers and sisters.

CATSKILL – Michelle Kathleen Downey, 64, of Catskill, died Saturday, July 7, 2007, at her residence following a long illness.

Ms. Downey was born in Catskill on Nov. 2, 1942 to William Downey and Helen Seeley Pavlovich.  She had been employed by Motorola in West Palm Beach , Fla. , prior to moving back to Catskill.

STANLEY C. SOKOLOWSKI

COXSACKIE – Stanley C. Sokolowski died peacefully at Columbia Memorial Hospital after a short illness on July 6, 2007.

He was born on Dec. 10, 1919 in Brooklyn the son of the late Charles and Mary Sokolowski.  Before moving to Cairo in 1956 to work at IBM Kingston where he retired from in 1982; he lived in Elmont, Long Island where he was involved in Boys Scouts, American Legion and Civil Police.  He also served in the U.S. Army 42nd Rainbow Division as a private first class during World War II.  He was a member of Sacred Heart Church , Cairo and American Legion Post 291 Greenville.  He was a licensed electrician for 50 years and a member of IBEW.  He rewound electric motors, was a civil war bluff and loved to work with wood, but most will remember him for his trademark mustache.

He is survived by his brother  Anthony Sokolowski and wife Anne Morrison-Sokolowski, son Stanislow C. Sokolowski Jr. and wife Heidi Sokolowski, daughter, Stephanie C. Skidmore and husband James Skidmore, three grandchildren, Stephanie Clearwater-Breithaupt and husband Edward (Mike) Breithaupt, Stanislow C. Sokolowski III and wife Paul Sokolowski and Steven P. Sokolowski and three great-grandchildren Stanislow C. Sokolowski IV, Celia Sokolowski and Henry Sokolowski, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years Viola in 2001 and a brother Charles and sisters Pauline and Mary, brother-in-law Conrad Doell and son-in-law Norman W. Clearwater.

Funeral services will take place Wednesday, 11 a.m. at the Richards Funeral Home, 29 Bross st., Cairo with Rev. J. Nunan, pastor of the Sacred Heart Church, Cairo officiating.

Interment will follow in the family plot of St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Catskill.

CATSKILL –James Whitehead Sr., 78, died Thursday, July 5, 2007, at Albany Medical Center , where he had been a patient since June 21.

Born April 12, 1929 in Tuskegee , Ala. , he was the son of the late Rozell and Lonnie b. Sullivan Whitehead.

Mr. Whitehead had been employed at American Valve in Coxsackie prior to his retirement.

He was an active member of the Mount Tabor A.M.E. Zion Church on Water Street in Catskill.

Survivors include two sons, Rozell Whitehead and Timothy Whitehead and his fiancé Tricia Grayton, all of Albany ; a brother, Rozell Whitehead Jr.; two sister, Nancy Caroline Jacobs and Frances Whitehead; seven granddaughters, Kenya , Shamia, Timesha, Barbara, Mecca and Hiydia Whitehead and Latifah Irvis; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Bessie McGarity Whitehead, on Oct 15, 1980; and two sons, James Whitehead Jr. and Orlander Whitehead.

Calling hours will be 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Second Baptist Church , Main Street , Catskill.

An area resident for more than 50 years, she previously resided on Elm Street in the village of Saugerties .

Mrs. Drechsler was a former real estate agent with Fred Wind Realty and enjoyed the outdoors and landscaping.

Survivors include her husband, Alfred H. Drechsler; three daughters and a son-in-law, Carolyn D, Drechsler of Poughkeepsie, Loral D, Drechsler  and her friend Laura Bliss of Saugerties and Gail and Karl Quednau of Saugerties; one son, Daniel D. Drechsler of Rifton, Ulster County; a brother, Kenneth Sinnott of New York City; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Terry Drechsler of Kingston ; and grandson, Bruce Drechsler.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Mount Marion Cemetery.

RAVENA – Everett M. Kellam, 86, of Ravena, died Sunday, July 8, 2007, at St. Peter’s Hospital.  

Born in Schodack, he was the son of the late Clinton and Rose Mickel Kellam.  

In 1974, Mrs. Kellam retired from NYS-Power Plant after 25 years of service. He also drilled wells for many people in the Ravena area.  

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Bob Williams of Stuyvesant; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Missy Kellam of Hadley, Saratoga County, and Brad and Bonnie Kellam of Selkirk; a step-daughter and her husband, Carol and Brad Jordan of Amsterdam, Montgomery County; two sisters, Mary Kellam  and Phyllis Skidmore, both of Greenville; five sisters-in-law, Lilian Kellam of Hannacroix, Elaine Kunz of Georgia, Florence Kins of Ravena, Margaret Davis of Greenville and Rose Kins of Clarksville, Albany County; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Linda was a lifetime area resident, loved gardening, the outdoors, loved to travel, loved dancing, loved to shop and also enjoyed attending car shows.

Prior to her illness, she also was an accountant for the Hillicoss Excavating Co. Linda was also very devoted to her family.

She is survived by two sons Jesse Taylor III and his wife Bronwyn of Catskill and Randy Taylor of Coxsackie, three brothers Dennis Hillicoss of Coxsackie, Gary Hillicoss of Coxsackie, and Manley Hillicoss Jr. of Athens, three sisters Delores Holewienko of Athens, Sharon Lampman of Climax, Debra Rowlers of Earlton also survived by her two grandchildren Jessse Douglas Taylor and Kelsey Marie Taylor, and a dear boyfriend Edward Smith, also two expecting twin grandchildren.

Keith was presently an employee of Stavo Industries in Kingston .  He enjoyed snowmobiling, jetskiing, motorcycling, gardening, camping and his yellow Hummer.

Born June 19, 1928 in Brooklyn , he was the son of the late Albert and Agnes Pollio.  

Frank donated his body to the Albany Medical College through the Anatomical Gift Program.  

A 50 year resident of Catskill, he loved to travel and was passionate about life.  

He is survived by his wife, Karen (Lindskoog) Pollio; four sisters, Adelaide Pravada of Brooklyn, Agnes Rohr of Saugerties, Connie DelPrete of Las Vegas and Virginia Guido of Brooklyn ; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Albert Pollio.

GREENEVILLE – Alice Francis Roe, 87, of Glenmont, formerly of Greenville , died at the St. Peter’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Albany on July 10.

She was born in Brooklyn on Dec. 19, 1919 to William and Sophie (Gerber) Roe.

She attended Bay Ridge High School and moved to her residence on Irving Road in Greenville along with her parents and sister, in approximately 1938.

Alice worked as a secretary at General Electric in Schenectady for many years.  She then joined Stiefel Laboratories in Oak Hill as an executive secretary, working for Herbert and (possibly)  Werner Stiefe.  Alice later “retired” but at age 70 came out of retirement to work at the Greene County Department for the Aging.  In that capacity she not only learned to use a computer, but played a major role in computerizing operations and training others.

Alice was a stalwart member of the Westerlo Reformed Church, joining soon after arriving in Greenville .  She taught Sunday School for many years, was a strong soprano in the church choir, was member and secretary of the Ladies Aide Society.  Alice joined Hiawatha Grange 1480 in May of 1946 and was a member for 61 years.  She served as master, lecturer, lady assistant steward and flag bearer.  She also served as secretary for more than 25 years.  She was instrumental in starting the Grange Annual Bar-B-Q and actively supported the Grange Ice Cream Booth at the Altamont Fair.  She also was a member of the Albany County Pomona Grange and the State and National Grange.

In 2002, Alice decided to leave the house on Irving Roads and move to Van Allen Apartments in Glenmont to be closer to other seniors and her physicians.  She had five very happy years in her apartment, making new close friends and sharing in new experiences with her neighbors there.  Nonetheless, the family home in Greenville remained close to her heart.

Alice will be remembered with love and fondness.  She leaves behind her older and younger sisters, Myrtle Mortensen and Martha Hempstead, nieces and nephews, Garry, Jeanne and Thomas Hempstead, Patricia Mortensen and Barbara Sanborn and their families and cousins Albert Dayes Jr., Nancy DeKoven, Evelyn Dickinson, Beryl Halverson, Sally McManus, Doris Nemeroff, Betty Schumacher and Roy Sullivan and their families.

Funeral services will be on Sunday, July 15, at 1 p.m. at the Westerlo Reformed Church in Westerlo.

Friends may call at the church from noon to 1 p.m. prior to the service.

Interment will be in the Westerlo Rural Cemetery .

ATHENS – Edna Anna “Ann” Carlson, 85, of Athens , died Thursday, July 12, 2007, at Albany Medical Center where she had been a patient.  

Mrs. Carlson was born in Athens on Sept. 9, 1921 to the late Warren and Edna Catherine Gonnerman Travis.  She married the late Elmer Valentine Carlson on Feb. 2, 1941.  

She was a life long member of the Leeds Reformed Church, an avid gardener and nature lover.  

Mrs. Carlson is survived by her two daughters, Linda Skelley of Delmar , Del. , and Janice Vickers of Athens; four grandchildren, Laurie Vickers, Mark Vickers, Lee Jarman, and Victoria Dravneek; five great-grandchildren, Erin Jarman, Eliot Dravneek, Ethan Dravneek, Emily Anne Hudson, and Andrew Travis Hudson; her sister Albertha Bogert of Athens, and brother Alfred Travis, as well as three nieces.  

She was predeceased by her husband Elmer V. Carlson on Aug. 27, 2001, brother Warren Edward Travis, and a sister Mathilda Peck.  

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 16, at 11 a.m. in the Remembrance Chapel of the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights , Catskill, with interment following in the Town of Catskill Cemetery.

He was born in Leverkusen , Germany on Jan. 22, 1935.  

He was employed by Sterling Winthrop Laboratories in Rensselaer until his retirement. Paul later worked for Albany Medical Center as a Laboratory Technician.  

Surviving are his wife Boonya Erdtmansky of Greenville , his step-daughter Crystal Lee Ziomber, and a sister Brigette Hauschild and husband Richard of Germany.  

As to his wishes, Paul was cremated and he will be returned to Germany to be interred with his family.

GREENVILLE – Michael J. McGlynn, 79, of Greenville died in St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany on July 12, 2007.

He was born in Ireland on Oct. 28, 1927, the son of the late Patrick and Bridget (Mitchell) McGlynn.

Mike retired from the NYCTA, having been a bus driver.

He served his country in the U.S. Army, having joined the Army in less than a year after he immigrated from Ireland .

A family man, loving his grandchildren, children, step-children and he was a friend to all he met.  He will be dearly missed by all.

An avid New York Mets fan, he also loved playing golf and cards (the Irish 25).  He also could be found calling the bingo numbers for the Knights of Columbus.

He was active in the Greenville Irish American Club, the Greenville Vol. Fire Co. as a fire policeman, the Greenville American Legion Post #291, Knights of Columbus- Our Lady of Knock Shrine Council #6439, and the Michael J. Quill Irish Cultural and Sports Centre.

Surviving are his wife Mary (Mullen) McGlynn; four sons, Brian, Thomas, Michael and John McGlynn; one daughter, Anne McGlynn; four step-daughters, Eileen Coghlan, Ann Tuohy, Mary and Nora Lully; three step-sons, Joseph, James and Kevin Tuohy; 27 grandchildren; a brother, Patrick McGlynn; and two sisters, Bridget and Margaret McGlynn.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Bridget (McInerney) McGlynn and a step-son, Michael Tuohy.

HANNACROIX – Rose M. Perry Lent, 90, died Saturday, July 14, 2007  

Rose was born in Kingston , the daughter of the later Frank and Rose Perry.  

She lived in Ravena for many years before moving to Hannacroix.  

Rose was a member of the Ravena-Coeymans American Legion Auxiliary and Senior Projects of Ravena and a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church in Ravena.  

Survivors include her son Michael J. (Judy) Lent; grandchildren, Tammy (Sean) Parker, Paul (Sue) Antonelli, Randy (Pam) Lent and Stephanie (Mark) Longstaff; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.  

Rose was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Lent and daughter Carmella Antonelli.  

Friends may call at the Babcock Funeral Home in Ravena on Monday from 3-7 p.m.  

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17 at St. Patrick’s Church in Ravena.

FLOYD MAINES
Former president of company

BINGHAMTON – Floyd Maines, former president of Maines Paper & Food Services, Inc., died Thursday at Lourdes Hospital after a short illness, according to his family.  He was 86.  

Maines was admitted to Lourdes Hospital on Tuesday with a bacterial infection that eventually spread throughout his body, said his son, William Maines.  

Maines , who was born in Binghamton , had remained active in the company his father, Floyd L. Maines Sr., started in 1919.  He was instrumental in turning his father’s Maines Candy Co. from a $30,000-a-year business into a multibillion-dollar paper-and-food distribution company.  The company, run by his sons William and David Maines, has grown to the seventh-largest food distribution center in the United States , servicing chains like Burger King and Olive Garden.  

Maines joined the U.S. Navy and served in Europe during World War II in the Naval Technical Intelligence Department.  He served for five years.

Joining his father’s business, he initiated an expansion into fountain supplies, toys and paper, including napkins, straws and paper cups.

“His work was not a job, it was his passion,” said his son David.  “He was unselfish, cared about people.  He was a great role model.”

Funeral services are private.

ARTHUR D. HAMM

CATSKILL – Arthur D. Hamm, 93, of Catskill, died Sunday, July 15, 2007, at Eden Park , in Catskill.

Born Nov. 21, 1913 in Catskill, he was the son of the late David E. and Grace Layman Hamm .

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.  He joined in 1941 where he began service at Camp Upton .  He was transferred to Fort Eustus , Va. and Fort Sheridan , Ill.   In May 1942, he was shipped to Ireland and his unit, the 1st Infantry (“the Big Red One”), was shipped to North Africa in November 1942 where they trained for an invasion of Sicily .  After the battle for Sicily in November 1942 his unit was shipped back to Great Britain where he participated in the invasion of Normandy in June 1944, for which he was awarded a combat ribbon.  He was also awarded ribbons for campaigns in Northern France, the Ardennes, Central Europe and the Rhineland .

After his discharge from military service on Oct 2, 1945, on Jan 19, 1946 he married Edna Margaret Moore, who predeceased him in Nov. 12, 2006.

Mr. Hamm was a letter carrier and clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Catskill, retiring in 1972.

He was a volunteer fireman with Catskill Hose Company No. 1 for more than 50 years and also served as president of the Greene County Fire Police.

He was an active member of the Sandy Plains United Methodist Church for more than 35 years.

Mr. Hamm was an avid collector of stamps, coins and postcards, and served as both president and secretary of the Rip Van Winkle Stamp Club.

He enjoyed baseball and played softball into his 60s.  He managed a Little League team, served as treasurer of the Catskill Babe Ruth League and was president of the Catskill Old Timers Softball League.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Nathan A. Hamm and Nance Gross of Catskill and Kenneth R. Hamm and Susan Martin of Feura Bush; a daughter and son-in-law Edith H. and Jim Tresner of West Hartford , Conn. , six grandchildren Kenn B. Hamm and Elizabeth and their mother, Cassandra Artale, Brian Hamm and Natasha Hamm and Tara Tresner and James Tresner.

Private cremation was performed at Park View Cemetery in Schenectady .

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. July 28 at Sandy Plains United Methodist Church , South Cairo with the Rev. Retta Lykens, pastor, officiating.

Interment will follow at the Town of Catskill Cemetery.

SAN FRANCISCO , CA – Martin Irvis, 47, of San Francisco , died Sunday, June 10, 2007, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 3, 1960 at Greene   County Memorial Hospital in Catskill.

He was affectionately known to his friends and family as “Buster.”

Mr. Irvis spent the first 21 years of his life in Catskill where he earned his high school diploma and health care credentials.  He then moved to San Francisco .

Survivors include his father, Haywood Irvis Jr.; step mother, Mary L. Irvis; two brothers, Barry W. Irvis and Paul J. Irvis; three sisters, Constance J. Irvis Jones, Kathy Irvis and Daniel M. Irvis Noble; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by his mother, Helen Harris Irvis.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the Catskill Wesleyan church.

SAUGERTIES – Lorna Ann Sullivan Lewis, 57, of Lighthouse Drive in Saugerties died July 16, 2007 at her residence.

Born Dec. 5, 1949 in Kingston , she was the daughter of Lucille Bulich Sullivan and the late Donald Sullivan.

A graduate of Saugerties High School , she loved gardening, cooking and the outdoors.

Beside her mother of Saugerties, she is survived by her husband, George Anthony Lewis; brother, John Sullivan of Saugerties, sister, Donna Schoch of West Shokan ; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Gary Sullivan.

Her funeral service will be held 8:30 p.m. Thursday, at the Seamon Wilsey Funeral Inc., corner of John and Lafayette Streets.

Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

CATSKILL – Joseph Paul Bauman, 64, former Catskill area resident, died Thursday July 19, 2007 at his residence in Petersburg , VA.

He was born June 29, 1943 in Brooklyn , NY , the son of the late Joseph A. and Rita (Meskill) Bauman.

Joseph served in the United States Army National Guard and Coast Guard during the Vietnam Conflict.

He was an employee of the Southside Virginia Training Center in Petersburg , VA prior to his retirement.

Mr. Bauman is survived by his spouse Pam Bauman of Petersburg , VA ; three children, Kimberly Schock and husband Kevin of Dover, DE, Michael Bauman of Harrington , DE , Melissa Langenfeld and husband Scott of Mechanicville, VA; two sisters, Maureen Geiger of Milford , PA , Marianne Darling of Catskill; six grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Joseph was predeceased by a son, Charles J. Bauman on May 1, 1987; and two sisters, Kathleen J. Favicchio and Rita D. Gould.

There are no calling hours.  A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, July 23, at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church , Bridge Street , Catskill , NY .

Interment will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Catskill.

Herbert Hentschel Jr., 73, of Hannacroix , N.Y. , died at the DVA Medical Center in Albany , N.Y. on July 15, 2007.

“Unk” as he was fondly known by all was born in New York City on Dec. 6, 1933 son of the late Herbert and Berta (Bussett) Hentschel Sr.

He worked at Albright’s Garage and the Ravena Central School as a mechanic and later operated heavy equipment in his own business.  Herbert had served his country serving in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. A “Jack of all Trades” “Unk” could fix just about anything he was asked to.  A friend to all he will be missed by his family and friends/

Surviving are his sister Anita Pforte, a nephew Albert “Woody” Pforte, a great-niece Natasha, great-nephews Zachary, Max and Dustin and a special great-nephew Kevin.

As to his wishes he has been cremated and will be interred at the Saratoga National Cemetery .

William George Stacey Jr. “Bill”, 81, a lifelong resident of Athens , NY , died Thursday, July 19, 2007 at the Fireman’s Home of the City of New York on Harry Howard Avenue in Hudson , where he has resided with his beloved wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Rose (Riley) Stacey since May 21, 2007.

He was born in Athens , NY on Aug. 28, 1925 to the late William George Stacey, Sr. and Nora Mae (Haner) Stacey.  He was employed as an automotive mechanic with the Greene County Highway Department in Catskill until his retirement on Jan. 20, 1981 due to poor health.  An active member of his community, Bill became a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in 1946 and joined the William H. Morton Engine co. 1 in 1973 where he’s currently a life member.  He’s a fourth member of the Athens Volunteer Fire Department Inc., became a member of the New York State Volunteer Firemen’s Association in 1975, is a past member of the Greene county Volunteer Firemen’s Association, a current member of the Hudson Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association and the Royal Order of Blue Vests of the Hudson Valley, and became a member of the IOOF Lodge in 1945.

He is survived by is loving wife of 59 years, Elizabeth R. “Betty” Stacey and their son, George F. Stacey Sr. and daughter-in-law Linda M. Stacey of Athens; his brother and sister-in-law , Daniel H. “Dan” and Lenora “Ann” Stacey of Athens; his grandson, George F. Stacey Jr., who has actively served for 18 years in the U.S. Air Force and wife Kimmarle Stacey; his granddaughter, Cheryl Lynn (Stacey) Alberti and her husband Peter “Pete” Alberti of Athens; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 23 at 11 a.m. in the Remembrance Chapel of the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights with interment following in Mount Hope Cemetery in Athens .

Friends and relatives invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday, July 22 from 4 to 8 p.m.

Firematic services will be conducted at 7 p.m.

HUNTER – Celia Boyarsky Denner, 100, of Hunter, died July 19, 2007 at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill.

Born, Sept 8, 1906 in Hunter, she was the daughter of the late Ida and Jacob Boyarsky.

She was a member of the Eastern Star for 81 years, active in the Red Cross during WW II and a member of the Hunter Synagogue Sisterhood and Hadassah.

The youngest of six children, she was married at Alpine House in Hunter on June 16, 1929 to Stanley Denner of New York City.  She and her husband lived in the Hunter home she was born in, and in New York City .

Survivors include her children, Jeanne Denner Tucker of Florida, Daniel Harvey Denner and wife Audrey of Florida, and Dorla Danner Slocum of Hunter; 10 grandchildren, Jeffery Morgan Tucker, Vicki Tucker Feeley, Diane Tucker Sugimoto, Michael Dean Tucker, Stephen Marc Tucker, Pamela (Denner) Strasen, Jordan Michael Denner, Victor Edward Denner, Stacey Solcum Smith and Rebecca  (Slocum) Rodriguez; 20 great-grandchildren, five nieces, nine nephews, 15 great-nieces, 14 great-nephews, nine great-great nieces and 17 great-great nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband on Oct. 28, 1960; as well as by brothers, Herman Boyarsky, Irving “Zeke” Boyarsky, Harry Boyarsky and Morris Boyarsky; and sister, Lillian Boyarsky Solomon.

Funeral service will be noon today at the Aston Basagic Funeral Home, Main St . , Hunter.

Interment will follow in the South Jewett Cemetery next to her late husband and parents.

SOUTH WESTERLO – Betty Barnett, 80, of South Westerlo, formerly of Rushville , Ind. , died Monday, July 23, 2007, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany .  

Born on Aug. 28, 1926 in Louisville , Ky. , she was the daughter of the late Lunsford and Gertrude Haehl Bullock.  

Mrs. Barnett had helped run the family business, Hoosier Dairy Products, in Wesville , Ind. , with her husband Robert, who survives her.  

She also worked at the Elliott House Thrift Shop in Norton Hill.  

She was a member of the D.A.R., the P.E.O., the Greenville United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.  

Mrs. Burnett was always making crafts, sewing, loved doing crossword puzzles and jig saw puzzles.  She also enjoyed baking and was an avid reader.  

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and William Scrafford of South Westerlo, Dean Ann and Stephen Fowler of Brookfield, Conn., and Martha and Douglas Hodges of Manchester, Tenn., a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Thorpe of Rushville , Ind. , five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.  

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville .  

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the Greenville-Norton Hill United Methodist Church in Norton Hill.  

Cremation will be at the Albany Rural Cemetery with interment in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Rushville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Greenville-Norton Hill U.M. Church Building Fund.

COXSACKIE – Rose M. Rabl, 92, of Mansion Street died Sunday, July 22, 2007, at the Kaaterskill Care Center , Catskill, where she had been a resident since Aug. 22, 2006.  

Born Feb., 12, 1915 in Ridgewood, Queens , she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Louise Schmuck Sterbenz.  

Mrs. Rabl moved to the Coxsackie area in 1948 and was employed as assistant vice president for the National Bank of Coxsackie for 35 years.  

She was a communicant of the St. Mary’s Church in Coxsackie, a member of the Altar Rosary Society and a member of the   B.P.W.  

She enjoyed music, baking and preparing floral arrangements.  She was also an avid card player and traveler.  

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Patricia Rabl of Queensbury; a daughter, Dolores Helmer of Coxsackie; three granddaughters, Nicole and Jeffrey Giebelhaus of Hurley, Cherisse and Austin Young of Averill Park and Erika and James Omohundro of Madison, WI; and six great-grandchildren.  

She was predeceased by her husband, Roman, on July 5, 1975.  

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the W.C. Brady’s Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St. , Coxsackie.  

A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church of Coxsackie with the Rev. John Moyna, pastor, officiating.

Interment will follow next to her husband in the family plot of the St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery .

CALIFORNIA CITY , CALIF – Robert Bennett Jr., formerly of Coxsackie, died July 8, 2007.

He graduated from Coxsackie- Athens High School furthered his education during and after serving in the Air Force for 23 years.  He resided in California City , Calif. , where he received honors, certificates, badges, master’s degrees, bachelor’s degree.  He was very proud to serve and contribute to his country.

He was laid to rest at Riverside National Cemetery alongside all of those who served in the armed forces with full military honors, at Eden Air Force Base, Calif. , another ceremony given in his honor.

He left behind, a son Rev. Robert L. Bennett III, a daughter Susie R. Bennett, both of Georgia, a daughter Autumn of Okinawa, Japan, six grandchildren, father, mother, predeceased him, Robert L. Bennett Sr., and Reynoldia (Vicky) Deyo Bennett both of Coxsackie, a sister Jacqueline Lewis, Bennett of Catskill, a sister Pearl Bennett of North Carolina, several aunts, uncles, nephew, cousins.

HUNTER – Celia Boyarsky Denner, was born on Sept. 8, 1906 in Hunter, N.Y. to Ida and Jacob Boyarsky.  She died on July 19, 2007 at the age of 100.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Herman Boyarsky, Irving “Zeke” Boyarsky, Harry Boyarsky and Morris Boyarsky; and sister, Lillian Boyarsky Solomon. She was an aunt to five nieces and nine nephews, fifteen great-nieces and fourteen great-nephews, nine great-great nieces and seventeen great-great nephews.

Celia was the youngest of six children, enjoyed a wonderful childhood with her extended family. She was married at Alpine House in Hunter on June 16, 1929 to Stanley Denner of New York City, who was born on Jan. 15, 1908 and died on Oct. 26, 1960. Celia and Stanley lived in the Hunter house she was born in, and in New York City .

She was a generous and nurturing grandmother and great-grandmother and provided a firm home base to her family and friends.  She enriched the lives of those who know and loved her and will be sorely missed.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, July 22 at noon at the Aston Basagic Funeral Home, 7742 Main St. , Hunter, N.Y.

Interment to follow at the Kol Ansche Israel Cemetery , in South Jewett, N.Y.; where she will be interred next to her husbands and parents.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tannersville Rescue Squad, or the Hunter Synagogue in her memory.

SOUTH WESTERLO – Donald Elroy Lockwood, 84, of South Westerlo died at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center in Albany on July 24, 2007.

He was born on February 25, 1923 at the family home in South Westerlo , the son of the late Elroy and Elberta (Swartout) Lockwood.

Don attended a one-room schoolhouse in South Westerlo before transferring to the Greenville Central School and graduated in 1942.

He took over his father’s poultry farm business and operated until 1968.  He also worked for Blaisdell’s Repair Shop in Ravena repairing lawnmowers.

Don enjoyed spending time at the family camp on the Hudson River , gardening and helping his neighbors.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Janet (Boyce) Lockwood; three daughters, Cynthia Lockwood of Cobleskill , NY , Christine (Brian) Wickes of Greenville and Ann (Jayme) Albin of Greenville.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sat. from 11 a.m. to 12 noon prior to the service.

Funeral services will be at noon on Saturday, July 28 at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville , NY .

CAIRO – Sandra J. Ray, 71, of 67 Roosevelt Ave. , Cairo , died July 25, 2007 at the residence.

She was born in Gutherie Center , Iowa , May 31, 1936, and was the daughter of the late Michael F. and Dorothy (Roe) Markham.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years Robert L. Ray Sr. of Cairo , three sons, Robert Jr., Joseph, and John all of Cairo, two daughters Lisa Stubbs of Jupiter, Fla., and Lynn Jones of the Bronx, two sisters, Mary Lou and Loretta Markham of Hornell, NY.

Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, also one great-grandchild.  Sandra has been an area resident since 1968, has been a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo, and also Sandra has thirty dedicated years as a nursing assistant at the Columbia Greene Long Term Care, Catskill, NY.  She is very devoted to her family and she and her husband have been married of 49 years.

SAUGERTIES – Gary L. Schmidt, 61, of Fortune Valley Lane , died Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at his residence.

Born December 31, 1945 in Kingston , the son of Sarah Oaks Schmidt Soosalu and the late Edward Schmidt.

A lifetime area resident, he was employed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in Region 3 in New Paltz. He retired in 2001.

He was a member and on the Board of Directors of the Saugerties Power Boat Association.  

He was a devoted family man and loved to travel.

Besides his mother, Myrtle Beach , survivors include his wife, the former Carole Stevenson; daughter Kelli Schmidt of Saugerties; sister, Donna Johnston and her husband tom of Rochester ; brother, Scott and his wife Diane of Chicago, IL; grandsons, Edward Tierney, Gary and Zachary Harding of Saugerties; and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc., corner of John and Lafayette Streets, Saugerties, NY with the Rev. Dr. Duane Buddle, Pastor of the Saugerties United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment will follow in the Woodstock cemetery, Woodstock .

SAUGERTIES –Filomen J. “Phil” Spinelli, 90 of Houtman Road and formerly of Woodstock died Monday, July 23, 2007 at the Ulster County Health Related Facility, Kingston , NY .

Born February 10, 1917 in Brooklyn , NY , he was the son of the late Philip and Patrina Baldasana Spinelli.

A Veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Army where he was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, American Defense Service Ribbon and the Good Conduct Ribbon.

He was the original owner and operator of the Woodstock Meats, Spinelli Antiques and Fil-Mar Farms.

Survivors include his wife, the former Marie G. Fuzo with whom he recently celebrated his 61st wedding anniversary; two daughters, Michel “Mickey” Kraft of Saugerties and Lynne Spinelli of Delhi ; two brothers, Salvatore of Brooklyn and Frank Spinelli of Woodstock ; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Philip and two brothers, Eugene and Peter Spinelli and one sister Rachel Fuzo.

His funeral service will be conducted privately at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc., corner of John and Lafayette Streets, Saugerties , NY .

GREENEVILLE – Mary Gulisane, 78, died July 25, 2007 at St. Peter’s Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Manhattan July 18, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Nicoletta (Macchia) Lomuscio.

She was a loving wife, mother and homemaker who love to serve others and was true to her Italian heritage.  She showed that love through her excellent culinary skills.

She was an active member of St. John the Baptist Church parish where she offered many hours of Christian service and helped with the local food pantry.

She was predeceased by her husband John V. Gulisane; her brothers, Joseph and Frank; and her sister, Katherine.

She is survived by two daughters, Loretta Gulisane of Catskill and Maria Marquit ( Wayne ) of Greenville ; son, John V. Gulisane Jr.  (Katherine) of Valatie; eight grandchildren, Daniel, Jared, Joseph, Jacob and Angela Gulisane, Matthew and Joshua Marquit, Corrina Marquit-Phillips; one great-grandchild, Gavin Marquit; and sister, Antoinette (Toni) Ambrosio of Poughquag.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the Greenville branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Route 41, Greenville .

Friends may call at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville , on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Interment will be 1 p.m. Monday in the Saratoga National cemetery Schuylerville.

ARTHUR D. HAMM
World War II veteran

CATSKILL – Arthur D. Hamm, 93, of Catskill, died Sunday, July 15, 2007, at Eden Park , in Catskill.

Arthur was born Nov. 21, 1913 in Catskill, he was the son of the late David E. and Grace (Layman) Hamm .

He was the beloved husband of Edna M. Hamm who predeceased him on Nov. 12, 2006.

Arthur served in the U.S. Army during World War II.  He was introduced into military service on April 17, 1941. He was transferred from Camp Upton to Fort Eustus , Va. and Fort Sheridan , Ill.  

While at Fort Sheridan , his outfit was sent to Louisiana for six weeks of maneuvers.   In May 1942, he was shipped to Ireland . Ireland at that time was thought to be the next country Germany would attack.  Arthur’s unit, the 1st Infantry (“The Big Red One”), was shipped to North Africa in November 1942 where they trained for an invasion of Sicily . Sicily was invaded in November 1943, his unit was shipped back to Great Britain . He participated in the invasion of Normandy in June 1944, for which he was awarded a combat ribbon.  He was also awarded ribbons for campaigns in Northern France, the Ardennes, Central Europe and the Rhineland .

Arthur returned to Catskill after his discharge from military service on Oct 2, 1945. He married Edna Margaret Moore on Jan 19, 1946. He and Edna often joked about walking to the parsonage to be married on that day in 19 below zero weather.

Arthur’s life occupation was as a letter carrier and clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Catskill. He retired from the post office in 1972.

Arthur was very active in the community. He was a volunteer fireman with Catskill Hose Company No. 1 for over 50 years and also served as president of the Greene County Fire Police.

He was also an active member of the Sandy Plains United Methodist Church for over 35 years.

Arthur was an avid collector of stamps, coins and postcards. He served as both president and secretary of the Rip Van Winkle Stamp Club.

He loved baseball. He played softball into his 60s.  He managed a Little League team, served as treasurer of the Catskill Babe Ruth League and was president of the Catskill Old Timers Softball League.

Mr. Hamm is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Nathan A. Hamm and wife Susan  Martin of Feura Bush; a daughter and son-in-law Edith H. Tresner and husband Jim of West Hartford, Conn., six grandchildren Kenn B. Hamm and Elizabeth and their mother, Cassandra Artale, Brian Hamm and Natasha Hamm and Tara Tresner and James Tresner.

Private cremation was performed at Park View Cemetery in Schenectady .

A Memorial Service will be held 1 p.m. July 28 at Sandy Plains United Methodist Church , South Cairo . Rev. Retta Lykens, pastor, will be officiating.

Interment will follow at the Town of Catskill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sandy Plains United Methodist Church , South Cairo , NY .

ROUND TOP – Vincent Anthony Canna, Sr., 87, died on July 22, 2007 in Bradenton , FL.  

Vin is the son of Anthony and Philomena Canna, formerly of Round Top, NY (both deceased).  

Vin is a graduate of Cairo Central School and Hudson Valley Community college .  

He was a Navy Seabee during WWII and worked for many years at R.C. Lacy in Catskill.  He retired from NYS Correctional Institute in Coxsackie many years ago.  

Vin spent his entire life in Catskill and South Cairo .  The Canna’s lived on Sandy Plains Road in South Cairo for 54 years until, due to age and illness, they moved to Bradenton , FL.  

Vince will always be remembered as very friendly, hard-working, unselfish and one who always put his wife and children first.  His passing has created a void that can never be filled.  His family will always remember him with much love and admiration.

He is survived by his daughters Pat and Faith; sons Vincent Jr. and Jeff; eleven grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by one son-in-law and one daughter-in-law, many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.  

His wife Rose, to whom he was married for 64 years, predeceased him in 2005.  

A Memorial Mass for the repose of his soul is to be held at St. Patrick’s Church in Catskill.  His ashes are being united with his wife’s and together will be buried in the Veterans section of Catskill Rural Cemetery in Jefferson Heights .

He is survived by his wife Georgianna Slack of Okeechobee; stepsons Joseph Lahiff of Boston, Ma, Stephen Lahiff of Deland, FL, Robert Lahiff of Sunrise, FL, James Lahiff of West Palm Beach, FL; stepdaughter Mary Garretson of Millville, MA.  In addition, he is survived by 16 grandchildren.

Ann lived a full and happy life and worked tirelessly in the public interest, particularly for the benefit of the underprivileged.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Cunningham Funeral Home, Greenville , with an 11 a.m.  Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Church .

COXSACKIE – Doris C. Sullivan, 88, of Coxsackie, died July 27, 2007 at the Schuyler Ridge Health Care center in Clifton Park .

Born Nov. 24, 1918 in New Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Hotaling and Lillian Vermilyea Hotaling Ames.

Doris was a Gold Star wife, an avid reader and loved to mow her lawn and plant flowers.

She retired from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles in Catskill and also worked for more than 20 years for Dr. Lambertson in Coxsackie.

In 1942 she worked at the Watervliet Arsenal and later for General Electric in Coxsackie.

She is  survived by her daughter, Terri Hallenbeck of Glenmont; three nieces, Joan Mathes of Coxsackie, Judith (Jerome) Misuraca of Coxsackie and Jean Hathaway of Coxsackie; two grandchildren, Michael Miller of Ohio and Stacey (Mark) Patton of Texas; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Sydney and Olivia; and two nephews, James (Michele) Misuraca and Mark Hathaway.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Flight Officer William Harding who died during WWII and interned in the Florence Italy American Military Cemetery ; her second husband, Nicholas R. Sullivan; sister, Emily Marie Hotaling Schermerhorn; brother, Frank Bertram Hotaling; and stepfather, Leonard “Pa” Ames .

Born Sept. 29, 1919 in Catskill, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Nocera) Votta.

Mrs. Daoust was a lifetime area resident and also a communicant of the St. Mary’s R.C. Church and member of the Altar Rosary Society.  She was a charter member of the Hose Co. # 3 Ladies Auxiliary of Coxsackie, a charter member of the Columbiettes, a member of the Coxsackie Area Senior citizens and the Bethany Village Senior Citizens.

During World War II she was a Civil Defense Air Raid Warden.

She liked cooking and shopping with her daughter.  She also loved helping people and was an avid volunteer in the Coxsackie community.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Alfred A. Daoust, who now resides at the Barnwell Nursing Facility in Valatie; two sons, Ronald and wife Kathleen and Donald and wife Deborah, both of Coxsackie; a daughter, Mrs. Leo (Judee) Synakowski of Coxsackie; six grandchildren, Ronald, Robert, Ryan, Bryan, Bridget and Brandi.

Calling hours are 3-8 p.m. Wednesday at the W.C. Brady’s Sons, Inc. 97 Mansion St. , Coxsackie.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday 11 a.m. at the St. Mary’s R.C. Church , Coxsackie with Rev. Fr. Kenneth Swain, the Celebrant.

Interment will follow in the family plot of the St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery .  

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary’s Memorial Fund.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home for you convenience.

JOHN CURTIS HOOD SR.
Korean War veteran

ATHENS – John Curtis Hood Sr., 74, of Leeds-Athens Road , Athens , died July 30, 2007 after a long illness.

Born Feb. 11, 1933 in Freehold, he was the son of the late Ivan and Ada (Smith) Hood.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was an employee of the Village of Catskill prior to a job-related accident which forced his disability.

He was a member of the Greenville American Legion Post.

He is survived by three daughters, Joyce Fucito of Florida , Debbie (Peter) Backlund of Athens, Janice (Rob) Cettina of Florida; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are 9-11 a.m. Thursday at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home.

Graveside services with full military honors will follow at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Catskill.

DORIS C. SULLIVAN
Retired from DMV Catskill

COXSACKIE – Doris C. Sullivan, 88, of Coxsackie, died July 27, 2007 at the Schuyler Ridge Health Care Center in Clifton Park .

Born Nov. 24, 1918 in New Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Hotaling and Lillian Vermilyea Hotaling Ames.

Mrs. Sullivan retired from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles in Catskill. She also worked for more than 20 years for Dr. William A. Lambertson in Coxsackie. In 1942 she worked at the Watervliet Arsenal and later for General Electric in Coxsackie.

She was a Gold Star wife who was an avid reader and loved to mow her lawn and plant flowers. She will be remembered for her love of her hometown community of Coxsackie.

Survivors include her daughter, Terri Hallenbeck of Glenmont; three nieces, Joan Mathes of Coxsackie, Judith (Jerome) Misuraca of Coxsackie and Jean Hathaway of Coxsackie; two grandchildren, Michael H. Miller of Cincinnati and Stacey (Mark) Patton of Dallas; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Sydney and Olivia; and two nephews, James (Michele) Misuraca and Mark Hathaway.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Flight Officer William Harding Hallenbeck who died in World War II and is interned in the Florence , Italy , American Military Cemetery ; her second husband, Nicholas R. Sullivan; a sister, Emily Marie Hotaling Schermerhorn; a brother, Frank Bertram Hotaling; and her stepfather, Leonard “Pa” Ames .  

Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the W.C. Brady’s Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St . , Coxsackie.  

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Second Reformed Church in Coxsackie, with the Rev. Carolyn Lewis officiating.  

Interment will follow in the family plot of the Riverside Cemetery in Coxsackie.
