Coxsackie – Kelly Nicole Jenkins, 18, a senior at Coxsackie-Athens High School, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, in Danbury, Conn., after injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born Dec. 4, 1988 in Hudson, she was the daughter of Harold and Victoria Sigler Jenkins of West Athens.

She was on the Coxsackie-Athens Yearbook Committee, a member of the Varsity Bowling Team, physical education assistant at school, a member of the Varsity Field Hockey team and a member of the Coxsackie-Athens Softball Team. She also loved music and movies.

Miss Jenkins was employed at Black Horse Farms.

In addition to her parents, survivors include her maternal grandparents, Alvin and Edith Kritzman of Hudson; a great-grandmother, Margaret Hoffman; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Harold and Lillian Barone Jenkins.

Cremation will take place Tuesday at the Albany Rural Crematory in Menands.  Calling hours will be 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the W.C. Brady's Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated noon Friday with the Rev. John Moyna, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, officiating.

Interment of her cremains will follow in the St. Mary's Parish Cemetery.

Robert E. Gramling
IBM employee/WWII vet

Highland - Robert E. Gramling, 81, of Perkinsville Road and formerly of Hommelville Road in Saugerties, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, at the Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie.

Born Nov. 11, 1925 in Johnstown, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry and Ida Penrod.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

An area resident since 1962, he was a former resident of St. Mary's, Pa. Mr. Gramling was employed for more than 19 Years at IBM in Kingston and Poughkeepsie, retiring in Today's 1981.

He enjoyed tennis, road biking, hunting and fishing. Survivors include two sons, Robert D. of Red Hook and David G. Gramling of High-land; a brother, William Gramling of Williamsport, Pa.; two sisters, Twila Rudge and Lois Carl, both of Virginia; one grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Millie, in 2005.  

Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home Inc., comer of John and Lafayette streets, Saugerties. 

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Karl Ostberg, pastor of the Saugerties, Congregational Church, officiating.

Interment will follow in the Blue Mountain Cemetery, Saugerties.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Solomon Kalmus
Federal food inspector

Leeds - Solomon “Sam” Kalmus, 90, of Leeds, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2007, at Eden Park Health Care Center, where he had been a patient since November.

Born April 2, 1916 in New York City, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Fanny Boharad Kalmus.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and Korea.

Mr. Kalmus retired as a supervisor for a federal food inspection facility in New York City.

He was an active member of F. & A. M. Lodge 468 in Catskill and a member of Temple Israel in Catskill and Congregation Anshe Emeth in Hudson.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Adam Herchold of Clifton, N.J.; his sister, Helen Kalmus of Leeds; two granddaughters, Melanie and Lauren Shefchik of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Sarah Flaum Kalmus, on Oct. 8, 2003; a brother, Morris “Archie” Kalmus, on Jan. 30, 1995; and a sister, Sadie Faber, on June 1, 2005.

Funeral services will be held noon today in the Remembrance Chapel of the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill with Rabbi Daniel Fried of Anshe Emeth in Hudson officiating.

Athens - Antonio A. Puorro, 67, of Route 385, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, at North Shore Hospital, Manhasset, Long Island.

Born June 15, 1939 in Italy, he was the son of the late Constantino and Maria Marrone Puorro.

He had been an area resident since 1973.

 At the time of his death, Mr. Puorro was affiliated with the Evergreen Disposal Co. He enjoyed softball and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Diane A. Lobato Puorro of Athens; four sons, Anthony and Kim Puorro of Earlton, Joseph and Marcia Puorro of Athens, Mario and Penny Puorro of Canisteo, Steuben County, and John and Bonnie of New  Baltimore; and eight grandchildren, Joseph, Taryn, Anthony, Kerry, Stephanie, Samantha, Braden and Adam.

Stateside, he was predeceased by a brother, Peter, of N.J., one of eight children.

Calling hours will be 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Richards Funeral Home, 29 Bross St., Cairo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Sacred Heart Church in Cairo with the Rev. James Borstelmann officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot of the New Athens Rural Cemetery.

West Coxsackie - Lawrence M. Zini, 84, of Scheller Park Road, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at Barnwell Health Facility, where he had been a resident since Jan. 24, 2006.

Born Aug. 27, 1922 in New York City, he was the son of the late Florezo and Catherine Magnane Zini.

He came to Greene County at age 18.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II as an interpreter of Italian.

Mr. Zini was employed by the United States government as a carpenter and enjoyed working with wood and studying history.

Survivors include his daughter, Debra L. Zini of West Coxsackie, two brothers, George of West Coxsackie and Edward of Climax; a sister, Mary Pierce of West Coxsackie; two grandchildren, Emily and Halle; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the W.C. Brady’s Sons Inc., 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie with the Rev. Dennis Gardner, pastor of the Medway Congregational Church, officiating.

Interment will follow in the family plot of the St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery.

Former Coxsackie mayor

Dunnellon, Fla. - A. Willis Parks, 95, of Dunnellon, formerly of Coxsackie, died Dec. 16, 2006, at Legacy Hospice House of Ocala, Fla.

Born Feb. 28, 1911 in Cairo, he was the son of the late Alvin Martin and Mamie Louise Thorne Parks.

Mr. Parks spent his childhood on the family farms in Cairo, Otter Hooks and then Coxsackie where his parents established Parks’ Dairy on Van Dyke Street which provided fresh milk to area residents for many years.

He and his wife, Alma, who predeceased him, had an insurance and income tax business in an office at their residence on Washington Avenue in Coxsackie. He also sold real estate.

Mr. Parks served as mayor of Coxsackie from 1969 to 1977 and listed his greatest accomplishment as obtaining funds for, and the building of, the additional reservoir system for Coxsackie.

He was a former member of the Rotary and Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Greene County Association of Insurance Agents, and served as a committee chairman of the Salvation Army from 21 years.

He was retired for the past 32 years and enjoyed membership at the Citrus Springs Country Club in for many years. He was also a member of the Neighborhood Watch in the community.

Survivors include his step-daughter and son-in-law, Carole and Franz Menge, their three children, Franz Peter Menge, Meg Littleston and Joshua Menge; a niece, Patricia Parks DeLaRosa of Ravena; four nephews, Walter “Skip” Parks of Arizona, Terry Parks of Albany, Wayne Parks of Coxsackie and Sherman Wood of Athens; six great nieces; seven great nephews; two great-great nieces; six great-great nephews; two great-great-great nephews; and one great-great-great niece.

He was predeceased by his brother, Walter Parks; and his sister, Ida Mae Parks Wood.

A memorial service was held in the clubhouse of the Dunnellon Square Mobile Home Park on Dec. 23.

Greenville – Ruth Ford Radick, 98, of DeBary, Fla., formerly of Oak Hill, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, at the Orange City Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Born in Austerlitz, she moved to Florida from Oak Hill, where she had lived for more than 70 years.

Mrs. Radick was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Valley Chapter No. 38 O.E.S. of Oak Hill and had received a 75-year membership pin. She was a past district deputy and the O.E.S. New York State Chaplain in 1975 when Marion Kopko was grand matron. She also enjoyed pinochle and attending the activities of her children.

She was a volunteer for several local organizations and especially enjoyed volunteering at the many Oak Hill Durham United Methodist Church functions.

Survivors include two sons, George and Lionel Ford, both of Florida; a brother, Roger Webster of Massachusetts; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two husbands, Leo Ford and Charles Radick; and two sisters, Elsie and Rachel.

Services will be held at the Deltona Memorial by with the Rev. Will Furlong officiating.

A graveside service is planned for late spring at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Oak Hill.

Normand J. Auger

Westkill - Normand J. Auger, 80, of Spruceton Road, formerly of Dayville, Conn., died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at the home of his daughter, Nancy Albanese in Westkill.

Born Aug. 28, 1926 in Putnam, Conn., he was the son of Herman and Alice Houle Auger.

He served in the U.S. Navy from Feb. 1944 until May 1946 as an electrician with the amphibious force and was promoted to coxswain in charge of the crew in the captains’ absence. He trained in Maryland on LCTs and was than stationed at the naval air station in Lakehurst, NJ. During the war, he served in Okinawa, Japan on LCT 1203 and the Sakishima Islands for Japanese Occupation.

Upon his discharge from the navy, he resided and worked in the Killingly-Putnam area. Mr. Auger was last employed as a custodian with the Killingly Public Schools until his retirement in 1980. He was also a retired locksmith and tool and die maker.

He was a life member of the Am vets and the American Legion. He was a former assistant scout leader in Putnam, a VFW member, a member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the fire police and esteemed leading knight for the Elks Club Lodge #170, all in Danielson, Conn.

In addition to his daughter, survivors include three sons, John N. Auger and Joseph M. Auger, both of Danielson and Roger K. Auger of Dayville; two brothers, Leonard Auger of Putnam and Paul Auger of Palm Bay, Fla.; two sisters, Irene Gagnon of Cocoa, Fla. and Doris Brewer of Coventry, RI; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife of more than 55 years, Jeanette Auger; and his oldest son’s twin, who died prior to birth.

Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Aston-Basagic Funeral Home, 7742 Main St., Hunter.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Saint Theresa’s Church in Windham.

Interment will be held 10 a.m. Jan. 13 at the Maplewood Cemetery in South Jewett.

Westkill - Dan Mihai Brezniceanu, 60, of Westkill, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at home after a long illness. 

Born Dec. 8, 1946 in Bucarest, Romania, he was the son of Ecaterina Efremov Brezniceanu of Romania and the late Marin Brezniceanu. 

Survivors include his wife, Laurie Rasmussen Brezniceanu of Westkill; a son, Petre Vladimir Brezniceanu and a sister, Ana Marina Balasoiu, both of Bucarest. 

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Cairo United Methodist Church, Main Street, Cairo.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Richards Funeral Home, 29 Bross St., Cairo.

Catskill Yacht Club co-founder

Catskill - Elsie Smith Hodor, 88, of Catskill, died Wednesday Jan. 3, 2007, at the Kaaterskill Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center, surrounded by her family and devoted staff members.

Born June 7, 1918 in Catskill, she was the daughter of the late H. Clifford and Beth Spencer Smith.

She graduated Catskill High School in 1936 and was a graduate of the Edgewood Park School of Nyack, SUNY at New Paltz and the Mildred Elley Business School of Albany.

Mrs. Hodor was one of the founders of the Catskill Yacht Club, served as its secretary on its board of directors and was a life member of the Hudson Mohawk Council of Boat Clubs.

She was a life long member of the First Reformed Church of Catskill where she taught Sunday School for many years and was director of the First High School English Hand Bell Choir.

Survivors include a daughter, Beth Macellaio Robinson of Catskill; a grandson, Michael Macellaio; and a granddaughter, Meghan Macellaio-Saulpaugh and her husband Timothy.

She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Hodor, on Nov. 24, 2002.

There will be no calling hours.

Committal services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the family plot in the town of Catskill Cemetery with the Rev. Vicky Eastland of the First Reformed Church of Catskill officiating.

Arrangements are with the Yadack-Fox Funeral Home of Germantown.

Cairo - Richard Cirtus Morrison, 68, of Mountain Avenue, died suddenly Monday, Jan. 1, 2007, at this residence.

Born Oct. 24, 1938 in Cairo, he was the son of the late Harry E. and Ola Palmater Morrison.

He served in the U.S. Marines in the 1950s.

Prior to his retirement, Mr. Morrison was a machinist of the Micronetics Co. in Kingston.

A lifetime resident of Cairo, he enjoyed the outdoors and cutting firewood.

Survivors include two brothers, Robert Morrison of South Cairo and Harry Morrison of Cairo; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Frances Watts of Round Top and Helen and Earl Granderath.

He was predeceased by a brother, Harold Morrison.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Richards Funeral Home, 29 Bross St., Cairo.

Catskill - Jennie Y. Ritayik, 91, formerly of Smithtown, Long Island, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2006, at Livingston Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she had been a patient since July 30, 1998.

Born April 30, 1915 in Manhattan, she was the daughter of the late John and Anna Kozyra Yunka.

She graduated from Julia Richmond High School.

Mrs. Ritayik was employed as a legal secretary in New York City.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Thomas Satterlee of Catskill; three grandchildren, John Satterlee of Atlanta, Ga., John Ritayik of New Paltz and Andrea Ritayik of Queens; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Henry B. Ritayik, on Feb. 27, 1996; a son, John A. Ritayik, on June 6, 1997; two sisters, Mary Wickham and Stella Miller; and a brother, Anthony Yunka.

There will be no calling hours.

A prayer service will be conducted on Saturday at the St. Charles Cemetery in Pinelawn, Long Island under the direction of the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Interment will follow with her husband and son.

West Coxsackie - Leo “Howard” Cross, 79, of West Coxsackie died Jan. 5, 2007 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital.

Born June 18, 1927 in St. Albans, Vt., he was the son of the late Phillippe and Salina (Deso) Cross.

He retired in 1990 from New York State having worked at SUNY Albany in the Maintenance Department.

Howard was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Greenville, a church he helped build.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are his wife, Beverly (Moore) Cross; daughter, Suzanne Lane (Ronald) of West Coxsackie; three sons, Brian Cross (Diana) of Earlton, Philip Cross of Vermont, Francis Cross (Margaret) of Selkirk; sister, Eleanor Owens; six grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 7 p.m. Sunday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Route 81, Greenville.

Greenville – Madeline Kruzensk, 85, of Greenville died Jan. 5, 2007 at the Eden Park Health Care Center in Catskill.

Born in Brooklyn on June 19, 1911, she was the daughter of the late August and Magdalen Kruzensk.

Living most of her life in Ridgewood, she was a former office manager for Graphic Arts Unlimited in New York City.

Surviving are her brother, August Kruzensk and his wife Agnes; sister-in-law, Vesta Kruzensk; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville.

There will be no calling hours. Interment will be 1 p.m. Monday in St. John’s Cemetery, Middle Village, NY.

Frank was born Sept. 17, 1933 in Catskill, the son of the late Antonio and Rose (Milano) Leone.

Frank was a communicant of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, Catskill.

He was predeceased by his wife, Martha (Rabbena) Leone on April 14, 2000. 

Mr. Leone is survived by two sons, Anthony F. Leone of Catskill, and Frank C. Leone of Albany; a sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Robert LaBuff of Catskill; nieces and nephews, Rosanne Deering, Barbara Muzaskus, Robert LaBuff, Michael LaBuff and Charles Rabbena; and several cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Coxsackie – Afranzino Urso, 95, of Coxsackie, formerly of Freehold, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at the Eden Park Health Care Center in Catskill.

Born May 15, 1911 in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Josephine Crapanzano.

Mrs. Urso was a lifelong seamstress, having worked at the Landmark Dress Shop in New York City and then at dress shops in Catskill and Coxsackie.

Se enjoyed cooking and nature, especially feeding wild birds.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Lucy Urso of Coxsackie and Michael and Rosalie Urso of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three grandchildren, Salvatore Urso, Roseanne Carpenter and Michael Urso; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Salvatore Urso; a brother, Bobby Day; and two sisters, Mildred LaRosa and Lillian Battle.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Cunningham Funeral Home, Route 81, Greenville.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Greenville.

West Coxsackie - Darlene M. “Dolly” Yarum, 68, of Bethany Village, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson. 

She was born Sept. 11, 1938 in Schenectady. 

Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Yarum was a claims adjuster for the Prudential Insurance Co. 

An area resident for 26 years, she was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church of Coxsackie and enjoyed collecting frog figurines. 

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne Smith of Coxsackie; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Smith of Clifton Park; two brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Donna Samtaluski and Ronald and Sharon Samtaluski; a sister, Sharon Kazda; a grandson, Christopher Smith; and two nieces. 

She was predeceased by her husband, Frank, in 1986. 

Calling hours will be 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the W.C. Brady’s Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie. 

A memorial service will be held 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. 

Private cremation took place Saturday at the Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands.

Round Top – Joseph Bemiaz, 98, formerly of Route 31, Round Top, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at the Eden Park Health Care Center; Catskill, where he had been a resident for the last year and a half.  

Born July 18, 1908 in Austria, he was the son of the late Anton and Antonia Bemiaz. 

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. 

An area resident since 1973, Mr. Bemiaz was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church in Cairo. 

He enjoyed playing accordion and gardening. 

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Grace and Leonard Asaro of Cairo and Catherine and Fred Tupone of Staten Island; four grandchildren, Leonard Asaro, Joseph Asaro, Eric Tupone and Lisa Dodge; and nine great-grandchildren. 

He was predeceased by his wife, Ann. 

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Richards Funeral Home, 29 Bross St., Cairo. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at the Sacred Heart Church, Cairo.

Haines Falls - Scott V. Hommel, 88, of Haines Falls, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007, at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill. 

Born Jan. 18, 1918 in Haines Falls, he was the son of the late Arthur and Lillian Brower Hommel. 

He was a World War II Anny veteran. 

Mr. Hommel retired in 1974 as a foreman with the New York state Department of Transportation. 

He was a member of the American Legion Bunt Brewer Post #165 in Tannersville and the Haines Falls Fire Company. 

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Daryl K. and Peggie Hommel of Haines Falls; a daughter Debbie Hommel of Saugerties; brothers Hillard Hommel of Haines Falls and Francis “Harm” Hommel of Florida; a sister, Barbara Feml of Cairo; three grandchildren, Paul, Michael and Scott; a step-grandson, Joseph Meehan; a great-granddaughter and great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by his wife, Alva; and a son, Wayne. 

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Aston-Basagic Funeral Home, 7742 Main St., Hunter.

Coxsackie - George E. Petrigliano, 93, of Ely Street, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007, at his residence. 

Born Oct. 7, 1913 in West New York, NJ, he was the son of the late Santo and Rose Lionetti Petrigliano. 

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. 

Mr. Petrigliano was a machinist for Bendix Aviation in Teterboro, NJ. 

He and his late wife, Virginia G. Smith Petrigliano, brought their family to Coxsackie in 1959 and purchased the Little Store on Lafayette Avenue in Coxsackie from the Steele Family and became active participants in the lives of many.

After retiring, he enjoyed going on long drives in the country and wintering in Florida with his wife for 15 years. 

Mr. Petrigliano was a former member of the Knights of Columbus as well as a member of St. Mary’s Church of Coxsackie. 

Survivors include a son, George T. Petrigliano of Coxsackie; three daughters and sons-in-law, Rosemarie and Paul Craw of Coxsackie, Patricia M. and David Stockman of Coxsackie and Ginna A. and Gary Hillicoss of Coxsackie; a sister, Dorothy Lionetti of Florida; six grandchildren, Lisa Bennett of Florida, Angela Madden of Florida, Jason Donnelly of Coxsackie, Evan Donnelly of Albany, Chyenne Hillicoss of Coxsackie, Savannah Hillicoss of Coxsackie; three great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his wife who died on March 21, 2003, he was predeceased by two brothers, Anthony and James; and two sisters, Philomena Francisco and Tina Petrigliano.

West Coxsackie - Frank “Pep” VanNess, 88, a resident of West Coxsackie since 1980 and a former longtime resident of the village of Athens, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at his home.

Born Jan. 24, 1918 in Rutherford, NJ, he was the son of the late Franklin Clinton and Carrie V. Demarest VanNess.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1945. He was a medical NCO serving in the European, African, Middle Eastern, Asiatic Pacific and Philippine Battles and Campaigns.

In 1962, at the 1 St. Baptist Church of Catskill, he married the former Anita Beatty, survives at home.

Mr. VanNess had his first paying job at the age of six, delivering groceries in Rutherford, N.J. He also had a delivery route for Baker Boy of Hudson and Arnold Bread. He earned the nickname “Pep” while working for Al Nestlin’s grocery store in Athens.

He was the owner of VanNess Upholstery in Athens and Coxsackie for many years. He also was an industrial supervisor for upholstery at the Coxsackie Correctional Facility. He had also worked for the Kaden Brothers Pocketbook Factory in Athens and Grumman Allied (formerly Aerobuilt) in Athens.

Mr. VanNess was a member of the Federated Church of Athens and had served on many committees, the Athens High School Alumni Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post of Coxsackie, and was a life member of the I00F (Odd Fellows) in Athens and also the William, Raymond Lodge IOOF in Saugerties when the Athens Lodge merged.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter and son-in-law, Effie Lou and Imon Waugh of the western United States; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Franklin and Robin VanNess of South Bethlehem and Clinton E. VanNess of the western United States; four step children, Anita Smith of West Coxsackie, David Anspacher of New Baltimore, Mark and his wife Kristin Anspacher of Colonie and Donna Anspacher of Coxsackie; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Duane VanNess.

A memorial celebration will be conducted at a later date at the Federated Church of Athens.

Interment with full military honors will be held at the Saratoga National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Manassas, Va. - Robert Wallace “Bob” Cooper, 84, of Manassas, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007 at Capital Hospice, Arlington, Va.

Born April 12, 1922 in Cattaraugus, he was the son of the late William and Abigail Cooper. A brother, Frank, also preceded him in death.

He was part owner of the family business, Coopers Sweet Shop. Following that, he was Deputy Welfare Commissioner of Cattaraugus County. He then became administrator of the Firemen’s Home in 1967. Under his leadership, the Firemen’s Home came to be known as a “Home Away from Home” for retired firemen. This slogan, “Home Away from Home,” remains in use today.

Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Cooper; one daughter, Gail Sorrell and son-in-law William “Red” Sorrell of Manassas; and three grandchildren, Mark Sorrell of Scottsdale, Ariz., Brian Sorrell of Williamsburg, Va., and Craig Sorrell and wife Angela of Vienna, Va.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Pierce-Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, where a rosary will be said at 8:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11 at All Saints   Catholic Church, 9300 Stonewall Road, Manassas. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 13 at Hills Funeral Chapel in Cattaraugus.

Catskill -  Mary Theresa Alston, 89, of 16 Wildwing Park, Catskill, died Jan. 9, 2007 at Eden Park Health Care Center.

Born Oct. 22, 1917, in Manhattan, she was the daughter of the late William and Theresa (Gilligan) Kelley.

Mary was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Catskill where she was a member of the Rosary-Altar Society.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas E. Alston Jr., on July 19, 1976; a son, Thomas E. Alston III; two sisters, Theresa Black and Mildred Kelly; and four brothers, George, William, Charles and Robert Kelley.

She is survived by a daughter, Judy the Anne Alston of Manhattan; daughter- in-law, Vicki A. Alston of Wappingers Falls; granddaughter, Christina M. Alston of Wappingers Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

SAUGERTIES – Katherine Seitz, 97, of Spaulding Court, died Monday, Jan: 8, 2007 at the Ferncliff Nursing Home, Rhinebeck, after a short illness.

Born Nov. 7, 1909 in Roseton, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Kate McDonald.

She was employed for many years as a secretary in New York City before  relocating to Kingston, where she was employed as the registrar at the Ulster County Council of Girl Scouts. She retired in 1968 and moved to Saugerties in 1982. She was an avid gardener and would not allow a leaf to be out of place. She loved fishing, baseball and her greatest joy was to watch her Mets team beat the Yankees whenever they · played. She was a parishioner of St. Mary of the Snow Roman Catholic Church in Saugerties and was a former trainer at the Ulster Dog Training Club.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers: Harold, John, Joseph and Thomas McDonald; and three sisters: Adelaid, Anna and Frances McDonald.

Her funeral procession will form at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home Inc. comer of John & Lafayette streets, Saugerties, thence to St. Mary of the Snow Church at 10 a.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered.

Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Ravena.

Erna Suwara
Lived at Sunside

Long Beach, Calif. - Erna Suwara died on Jan. 2, 2007 in Los Angeles of natural causes.

She was born June 15, 1913 on a farm in Niederstauffenbach, Germany. In 1930 she emigrated to New York City with her mother, Amalia, to join her father, Rudolph and sister Minnie, and her brothers Emil and Otto Hoering.

Erna was married for 62 years to Ernest Suwara, a New York City policeman, retired, who died in 2001. They raised six children in the South Bronx. They later moved to their summerhouse in Sunside in the Catskill Mountains.

Erna is survived by her daughter, June; her sons, John, Rudy, Ernie, Otto and Alfred; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was devoted to her family and proud of their accomplishments. Rudy and Ernie were members of the U.S. Olympic Volleyball Team. Alfred has been with the New York City Fire Department for 25 years and Otto retired from the FDNY several years ago.

Services were held in Long Beach, Calif., on Jan. 6, 2007.  She will be interred next to her husband at the Winston Cemetery in East Durham.

Catskill – Antoinette Zibella, 97, formerly of Catskill, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007 at the home of her daughter in Clifton Park following a long illness. .

Mrs. Zibella was born in Catskill on Aug. 1, 1909 to the late Cosmo and Margaret Delema Fantazzo.

She was the mother of seven and wife of the late Anthony P. Zibella Sr. who predeceased her on Aug. 25, 1996.

Mrs. Zibella is survived by her seven children; Margaret Gowanlock of Florida, Anthony P. Zibella Jr. of Hudson, Patricia Miles of Connecticut, Dolores Dupont of North Carolina, Antoinette Niekamp of Florida, Lucille Hoffman of Clifton Park, and Cosmo Zibella of Catskill; nine grandchildren, Barbara, Lisa, Michael, Rose, Charlotte, Victoria, Kevin, Donna and Dolores; seven great-grandchildren, Ellen, Eric, Zachary, Mitchell, Cameron, Sydney and Matthew.

She was predeceased by her granddaughter Ilona of Florida.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Jan. 15 at 9:30 a.m. in St. Patrick’s R.C. Church on Bridge Street in Catskill with the Rev. John L. Moyna, pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Coxsackie officiating.

Greenville – Nina Forsell, 90, formerly of Mace Road, Gilboa, died at the Dutch Manor Nursing Home in Rotterdam on Jan. 10, 2007. She was born in the Town of Broome on July 28, 1916. She was the daughter of the late Jared and Allie (Cook) Wood.

A lifelong homemaker, she loved cooking and gardening.

She was a member of the Hilltoppers and the Broome Center Chapel Church. She is survived by; a son, Herman Forsell, Jr. and wife Lillian of Albany; a sister, Julia Mann of Schoharie; four step-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Herman Forsell Sr., and a son, Robert Forsell.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, Greenville.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.

Interment will be in the Potter Hollow Cemetery.

Cairo - Nicholas P. Bier, 72, died on Dec. 17, 2006.

Nicholas was born in the Bronx on March 2, 1934, and was the son of the late Nicholas and Loretta Bier.

Private cremation will take place at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands.

Nicholas was a longtime resident of Greene County and attended Cairo Central School, graduating in 1952. Nick served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was also a postmaster in Freehold and Acra for 30 plus years until retirement. He served as a Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus of East Durham. Nick was a lifetime member of the Cairo Hose Co. and was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church, Cairo.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Ernistine Bier; his son Michael Bier Sr. and his girlfriend Jennifer Bryann of Acra; his brother Martin Bier from Tupper Lake. He is also survived by his grandchildren Crystal Bier of Catskill, Michael Bier Jr. and wife Heather Bier of Purling, his great-grandchildren Brianah Bier (4 years), Perry (P.J.) McAurthur (3 years), Robert (DJ.) Moore (15 months) and Nicholas Michael Bier (7 months), along with step-grandchildren Kerry Willenbucker (8), Billy Willenbucker (7), Ashley Herring (12), and Ajia Herring (10); and by many nieces and nephews.

Catskill - Leonard Saul “Papa” Black, 85, of 8 Honeysuckle Lane, Catskill, died Jan. 10, 2007 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

He is survived by two daughters, Randy Schantz of Catskill and Susan Houghtaling of Kingston; two sons-in-law, Michael Schantz of Catskill and Eric Houghtaling of Kingston; a brother George Black of Maryland; and three grandchildren, Justin Schantz, Morgan Schantz and Noah Houghtaling.

Leonard was predeceased by his wife, Barbara (Kane) Black and a brother, Maurice Black.

CATSKILL- Antoinette Zibella, 97, formerly of Catskill, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007 at the home of her Daughter ion Clifton Park following a long illness.

Mrs. Zibella was born in Catskill on Aug. 1, 1909 to the late Cosmo and Margaret Delema Fantazzo.

She was the mother of seven and wife of the late Anthony P. Zibella, Sr. who predeceased her on Aug. 25, 1996.

Mrs. Zibella is survived by her seven children; Margaret Gowanlock of Florida, Anthony P. Zibella Jr. of Hudson, Patricia Miles of Connecticut, Dolores Dupont of North Carolina, Antoinette Niekamp of Florida, Lucille Hoffman of Clifton Park, and Cosmo Zibella of Catskill; nine grandchildren, Barbara, Lisa, Michael, Rose, Charlotte, Victoria, Kevin, Donna and Dolores; seven great-grandchildren, Ellen, Eric, Zachary, Mitchell, Cameron, Sydney and Matthew.

She was predeceased by her granddaughter Iliona of Florida.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Jan. 15 at 9:30 a.m. in St. Patrick’s R.C. Church on Bridge Street in Catskill with the Rev. John L. Moyna, pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Coxsackie officiating.

Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

Catskill – Peter Thomas Paul McKenna, 59, of 108 Green Lake Road, Leeds, died suddenly at home on Jan. 11, 2007.

He was born June 7, 1948 in Manhattan, New York City, the son of the late John and Gloria (North) McKenna.

Peter traveled to California and was a bail bondsman during the early 1970’s, working with people such as Timothy Leary. He returned back east during the mid-1970’s and was a resident director for the Warren House Drug Rehabilitation Clinic in Troy.

Peter was skilled in carpentry, plumbing and electricity.  He was an avid sky diver with over 700 jumps to his credit. Peter loved to sing and play the piano, write music, play darts, tell jokes and discuss current affairs and various topics.

Recently disabled, Peter sent his time enjoying his life watching his granddaughter and grandson.  He loved every moment spent with them and his daughter, Danielle.

Peter was predeceased by his spouse and companion of 18 years, Leona Cotte McKenna on July 31, 1999; and a brother, John Paul McKenna in September 1980.

Mr. McKenna is survived by his best friend and loving daughter Danielle S. McKenna and her companion Barrie Carr of Catskill; two brothers, David Pisarri of Surprise and Mark Pisarri of Florida; four sister, Judy O’Connor of Cairo, Pam Pisarri of Cairo and Dion Pisarri of Cairo; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Greenville Center - Francis “Frank” Payne, 77, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at his home.

Born Nov. 6, 1929 in Albany, he was the son of the late Francis J. and Elizabeth Baumis Payne.

He served in the U.S. Army.

Before retiring, Mr. Payne   was employed at Clifford B. Hannay & Sons in Westerlo.

He played the accordion, harmonica, spoons and sang with “The Squeeze-Play Accordion Band” and “The Good Old Boys Band,” playing locally for many years. He was seen frequently in the summer at Greenville Gazebo in the park.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald Payne and Glenn and Denise Payne, all of Freehold; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Patty and Carl Wagoner of Wells River, Vt. and Betty LaChapalle of Green Island; and two granddaughters, Stephanie and Ashley Payne, both of Freehold.

He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Leta German Payne in 2005; and a brother, Richard Payne.

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville.

Zelda was employed as a teller for the National Bank of Coxsackie for over 34 years.

She was a graduate of the Coxsackie-Athens High School, class of 1956. She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church of Coxsackie and treasurer of the United Women’s Group. Her lifetime profession was that of a bank teller. She was an avid animal lover and loved to cook and bake.

She is survived by a son, Michael Burghhardt and daughter-in-law Lisa of Wynantskill; a daughter, Tracy Karlin and son-in-law Lindsay of Saratoga Springs; a sister, Sarah Jane Smith of Coxsackie; and several cousins.

Greenville – Marjorie Ingalls, 95, of RD Greenville, died at the Good Samaritan Lutheran HCC on Jan. 15, 2007.

She was born in Ashland on Aug. 25, 1911, the daughter of the late Scott and Harriett (Salisbury) Clark.

She was married to Norton Ingalls on June 25, 1932 and together they operated a poultry farm business near Lambs Comers. They retied and sold the farm in 1966, when they built a new home. Her husband Norton has predeceased her.

Surviving her are a daughter Roberta Ingalls of Cheyenne, Wyoming; a son David and his wife Arlene of Medusa, NY; two grandsons, Michael Duncan and wife Jennifer of Medusa, NY, and Mark Duncan and wife Megan of Rensselaer, NY; three great-grandchildren, Cody, Emily and Scott Duncan; also long time friends and caregivers, Willie and Gaye McCafferty.

As to her wishes, services will be at the convenience of the family and she will be buried next to her husband in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Ashland.

She was predeceased 'by her husband Edwin G. Mutke on May 22, 2004.

She is survived by her loving daughter Joanne Albert, son-in-law Keith R. Albert and Grandson Gregory K. Albert all of Stony Point. Rose is also survived by her sister Joan Ockovic of Lake Ronkonkoma and several nieces and nephews.

Saugerties – Robert K. Baker, 78, of Washington Avenue, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007 in the Ferncliff Nursing Home after a long illness.

Born Dec. 17, 1928 in Medford, Mass.

He was the son of the late H. Noble and W. Louise Kimball Baker.

A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served in the United States Air Force. An area resident since 1955 he was employed at IBM for 33 years retiring in 1988. He was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club and was a licensed ham radio operator "W2FMY." His hobbies included steam trains and railroads.

Survivors include his wife, the former Marion “Liz” Fassett, with whom he recently celebrated his 49th wedding anniversary; one daughter: Kathryn Mashburn of Barrington, R.I.; one son: Douglas F. Baker of Guilderland; and two grandchildren.

His funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family with the interment in the Berkshire Cemetery, West Berkshire, Vt.

He was born in Hoboken, N.J. on May 24, 1920, the son of the late Erich and Mathilda (Krokock) Grunwald.

He was a veteran of World War IT, serving in the U.S. Navy on the USS Lap Wing.

An electrician, he was a 50 year member of I.B.E.W. in Harriman. He was also a   member of the Hiawatha Grange 1480, past president and trustee of the Hilltown Seniors, an H.C.R.C. Food Pantry and volunteer and a member of the Greenville American Legion Post 291.

Surviving are his wife Toni (Monaco) Grunwald; five children, Ricky Grunwald (Shirlene) of Walton, Michael Grunwald (Eileen) of Northfield, Mass., John Gurnwald' (Donna) of South Westerlo, Eileen Hallock of Amsterdam and Jeanne Hanson (Robert)  of Walton; 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Matilda Magenta (Alfred); and two brothers Normal Grunwald (Margaret) and Ernest Grunwald.

Born Oct. 23, 1916 in Saugerties she was the daughter of the late Russell and Emma Cooper.

Predeceased by her husband, William in 1980, survivors include; two daughters:  E. Joyce Wynne of Andulsia, Ala., and Janet Wikane of Stone Ridge. Two sons: Bruce E. of Brunswick, Ga., and William L. VanDerbeck of Malden on Hudson. One brother: William Lanigan of Schrewsbury, N.J. and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Greenville – Frank “Pep” VanNess, 88, a resident of West Coxsackie since 1980 and a former long time resident of the Village of Athens, died Saturday evening Jan. 6, 2007 at his home.

He married the former Anita Beatty in 1972 at the First Street Baptist Church of Catskill. Mrs. Van Ness survives at home.

A celebration commemorating Frank's life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007 at the Federated Church of Athens. Those attending are encouraged to share their memories of Frank over a cup of tea. A memory book will be available for those wishing to write a remembrance.  Interment with full military honors will be held at the Saratoga National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Windham - Walter J. Heffernan, Esq., formerly of Windham, died on Jan. 17, 2007 at the River Glen Health Care Facility in Southbury, Conn.

He was born in Brasher Falls, to Richard and Clara Heffernan.

He graduated from St. Lawrence University and after serving four years as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army, he earned his law degree from Fordham University. After establishing his law firm and practice in Windham, he attained his jurisprudence degree. He was on many civic organizations that contributed to the growth and development of the Windham Community. This includes being an original owner of the ski area known as Windham Ski Mountain. He was a member of the Greene County Bar Association and a former trustee of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church. He was an accomplished fly-fisherman and he enjoyed pheasant hunting with his cherished weimariners.

He was married to the late Kathleen Heffenan and is predeceased by his brother Robert Heffernan, and his sister Mary Heffernan (Nizza). 

He is survived by his sister Rita Foote of Ridgewood, N.J., and his two daughters Christine Heffernan of Burnt Hills, and Maureen Heffernan-Rich of Windham. Also survived by two granddaughters and five great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., at Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham.

Catskill - Edward A. Swart, Jr., 63, of Mud Lane, Athens, died suddenly, Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at home, after a short illness.

He was born November 25, 1943 in Catskill, the son of the late Edward A. and Jennie May (Smith) Swart Sr.

Edward was an employee of NAPA in Hudson prior to his retirement in 2006. He served in United States Army National Guard of New York and as a reservist. Edward was a longtime, active member of the West Athens-Limestreet Fire Company.

He enjoyed working and tinkering on cars, bowling and fishing.

Mr. Swart is survived by a son Edward A. Swart ill and his wife Patricia, both of Athens; a daughter, Gail Swart of Ravena; and five grandchildren, Alan, Allysea, Matthew, Adam and Alexander.

Cremation was performed at Park View Cemetery in Schenectady.  Graveside funeral services with full military honors will be held springtime at the Town of Catskill Cemetery.

GREENVILLE – Gerard J. (Gerry) Meisner, 54, of Oak Hill, died on Jan. 18, 2007 in the St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.

He was born in Bronx, on Aug. 9, 1952, son of Cyril Meisner and the late Alice (Munn) Meisner.

Gerry was employed by Spaulding & Rogers Manufacturing in Voorheesville until July of 2006. He was a member of the Oak Hill Durham Volunteer Fire Co.

He was predeceased by his mother Alice Meisner.

Surviving are his wife; Kathleen (Trickey) Meisner, a son; Joseph Meisner, two daughters; Alice and Dana Meisner, three grandchildren; Daniel, Erin and Makenzie Garramone, his father and step-mother; Cyril and Betty Meisner, two brothers; Andrew and Charles Meisner and a sister; Patricia Curtis.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 22, 2007 at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville, N.Y. 12083.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Interment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Catskill - Harry M. Wager, 90, of Catskill, died Friday evening, Jan. 19, at Eden Park Health Care Center where he had been a resident since Dec. 13, 2003.

Mr. Wager was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, on March 19, 1916, to the late Matthew and Clara Troutman Wager. He owned and operated Wager Brothers Dairy Farm on Old Kings Road for many years. He was a board member of the former ALF, a former member of the Dairylea Association, Farm Bureau, Asbury Grange, Saugerties Masons, West Camp/Saxton Fire Co. and Cementon Sportsman’s Club. He was also a former tax collector for the Town of Catskill.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at noon in the Remembrance Chapel of the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill with his grandson, the Rev. Lance M. Wager, pastor of a Baptist Church in Delaware, officiating. Interment will follow in the Catskill Rural Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to call at the funeral home on Monday evening from 7-9 p.m. and again from 10 a.m. Tuesday prior to the funeral.

Mr. Wager is survived by his wife, Mildred Burger Wager, whom he married in November 1992; three children, Mrs. Edward (Gail) Mokhiber of Sleepy Hollow Lake, Harry W. Killen, Ala. – Thomas “Tommy” Leon Walker, 87, of Rogersville died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at ECM Hospital following a brief illness.

The funeral was held Saturday at the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Rogersville. The Rev. Pat Driskell and the Rev. Richard Hughes officiated. A graveside service will take place Monday at the Town of Catskill Cemetery under the direction of the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill.

Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his first wife of 46 years, Ardelle Chadderdon Walker, and they were blessed with five wonderful children. He was also preceded in death by his parents, John Curtis and Mollie Romine Walker, and a brother, J.C. Walker.

He was a native of Lauderdale County and was a 1939 graduate of Lauderdale County High School. He attended the University of Alabama, but left to serve his country in World War II. His service included assignment to the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Unit in occupied Japan.. He retired from the Atomic Energy Commission in 1976.

Mr. Walker was a member and elder of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Rogersville and was a member and former teacher of the Fooks Sunday School class. He was a member of the Rogersville Civitan Club, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Wilma C. Walker; daughters, Tommie Sue W. Fortner and husband Larry, Doris W. Marlow and husband Ken and Evadelle W. Sabados and husband John; sons, Ralph L. Walker and wife Claire and John H. “Hal” Walker and wife Janice; stepchildren, Danny Steven Mason, and Teresa Barnett and husband Tim; grandchildren, Amanda Walker, Patrick Walker, Jesse Fortner, Scott Fortner, Tommasina Lash and husband Steven, Timothy “Tim” Marlow, William Sabados and wife Dawn, Jennifer Sabados; Jonathan Mason, Kalley Mason and Brandy Barnett; great-grandchildren, Ariella Lash, Indigo Lash and Zara Lash; sister, Christine W. Catskill - Dr. William Samuel Godfried, 93, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at the Albany Medical Center after a long illness.

Born Nov. 21, 1919 in Manhattan, he was the son of the late Morris and Ida Godfried.

A graduate of Alfred University and McGill University in Montreal, Dr. Godfried practiced dentistry in Manhattan prior to volunteering for the U.S. Army during World War II.

Entering the army as a lieutenant and promoted to a captain, he served in the South Pacific including New Hebrides, New Caledonia and Okinawa.

Dr. Godfried practiced dentistry in the Bronx from 1945 to 1948.

In 1946, he met his Elizabeth Kolker and they married in 1947. In 1948, they moved to Athens, where Dr. Godfried practiced dentistry. She survives him in Colonie.

Active in many community and government organizations, Dr. Godfried was an Athens village trustee, Catskill village justice for five years, life member of the American Legion in Catskill, Ulster-Greene Dental Society member and Rotary Club of Catskill member.

He was a member of the Temple Israel in Catskill and its Brotherhood where he also served as treasurer and usher. He was also a member of the Jewish War Veterans.

Dr. Godfried worked part time as a dentist at the Hudson Correctional Facility and retired after 35 years of practicing dentistry.

After retirement, he continued serving the community as a paralegal for the Greene County Department of Aging and was involved with grass roots politics in Athens and Catskill.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters and sons-in-law, Betsy and Don Feldstein of Guilderland and Susanne and Gerry Segelman of Rochester; two grandchildren, Michelle Celia Feldstein of Guilderland and Micah David (Michal) Segelman of Queens; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held noon Wednesday at the Traver and McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Interment will follow in the Temple Israel Cemetery in Catskill. A period of mourning will be observed 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Feldstein residence, 2 North Gate Drive, Guilderland.

Stamford - Flora E. Dart, 85, of Jewett, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at the Robinson Terrace in Stamford, Delaware County.

Born July 16, 1921 in Lexington, she was the daughter of the late Elijah and Hazel Cross-Vanetten.

Mrs. Dart owned and operated a dairy farm until the late 1970s and was one of the original members of the Jewett Rescue Squad.

She was active with the 4H; the DAR and the Dairy League and served on the Jewett Election Board for the Democratic Party for more than 30 years.

She was well known for her special occasion cakes and for organizing the strawberry supper at the Lexington United Methodist Church for many years.

Survivors include four children; two sisters; 14 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Floyd, in 1988; two brothers; and a sister.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Lexington Village Cemetery with the Rev. Elliot Oaks officiating.

Arrangements are with the Aston-Basagic Funeral Home in Hunter.

Born Sept. 18, 1985 in Long Beach, Long Island, he was the son of Angelo Agosto and Patricia Mulderrig.

Sean attended Hunter Elementary and Hunter Tannersville Central High School.

Mr. Agosto was a carpenter and chef and was employed by Matts Construction Co. and Custom Works.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Haines Falls, where he served as an alter boy. He also achieved the rank of star as a Boy Scout.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include two brothers, Mark and Christopher; eight uncles John, Terrence, Kevin and Michael Mulderrig, Anthony, Daniel and Joseph Agosto and Paul Saitta; four aunts, Michele Alberti, Susan Onimus, Kathleen Mulderrig and Bridgett Mulderrig; a grandmother, Rosemarie Saitta; a grandfather, Frank Agosto; and several nieces, nephews and cousins;

Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Aston-Basabic Funeral Home, 7742 Main St., Hunter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Haines Falls with the Rev. Anthony Motta officiating.

Born Sept. 6, 1924 in Cairo, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Genevieve Townley Deyo.

Mrs. Mack was a lifelong homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Philip Mack of Greenville; seven children, Carol “Tussie” Goff Wilsey and husband Don of Latham, Sandy Goff of Albany, Sidney Goff of Oak Hill, Sharon Goff Donnelly of Earlton, Phyllis Mack Morehouse of Glenmont, Lina Mack of Greenville and Dan Mack and wife Jane of Ghent; a brother, Garfield Deyo of Medway; a sister, Geraldine Barber of Scotia; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two children, Shirley and Edward Hillicoss; seven brothers; and one sister.

Belfast, Maine - Arthur O. Murray, 85, of Belfast, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at Harbor Hill.

Born Jan. 22, 1921 in Shirley, Mass., he was the son of Alexina L’Ecuyer and Richard Morais.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Murray spent many years as a plumber, working in Massachusetts.

He was an active member of the American Legion and enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include seven children, Robert Murray, Joy Robichaud, Richard Murray, Linda Marish, Arthur Murray, Kenneth Murray and Peter Lane; three siblings, Armond, Katherine and Louise; 17 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Arthur is predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Katherine.

A private service will be held in upstate New York in the spring.

Cairo - Victor James Simcik, 69, of Cairo, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at his home, three months after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

Born Sept. 21, 1937 in Chicago, his family moved to Coxsackie where he grew up.

Mr. Simcik was a skilled carpenter, mostly self-taught, who excelled in engineering, design and the physical rigors of construction. He held general contractor licenses in both New York and Massachusetts.

He enjoyed masonry and early American architecture.  He had an excellent reputation for quality construction, having worked in Greene, Albany, Ulster and Dutchess counties, and Martha’s Vineyard.

For more than 40 years, Mr. Simcik applied his expertise to countless volunteer projects of Jehovah’s Witnesses, assisting with construction of the branch facility in Wallkill, reconstruction projects in Jamaica and Puerto Rico in the 1980s and 1990s and recently overseeing the construction of the Kingdom Hall in South Cairo.

Survived include his wife of 41 years, Jane Simcik; three children, Amy Simcik Williams of Vineyard Haven, Mass., Jonathan Simcik of Oak Bluffs, Mass. and Rachel Simcik of Manhattan; and a granddaughter, Rosalyn Williams.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Feb. 24, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in South Cairo.

Oak Hill - Frederick C. Brown, 87, of Oak Hill died suddenly at his home in Oak Hill on Jan. 22, 2007.

Born Nov. 13, 1919 in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of the late William and Sara (Copenhaver) Brown.

Fred was a veteran serving 30 years of active and inactive duty in the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1974.

He was also employed at the U.S. Post Office in Colonie for several years.

Fred was a member of the Durham Valley Post No. 1416 American Legion and the Durham Ambulance Squad.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn M. (Goeller) Brown; daughter, Nancy J. Clark of Daytona Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, Karen, David and Paul Clark; two sisters, Annie Wilson and Lavenia Lowey; and brother, Edmund Brown.

Funeral and committal services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Cunningham Funeral Home, Greenville.

Leslie was a thirty year retired veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II in the Korean War.

He loved to repair engines, loved electronics and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife Lulu M. (Irvis) McFoler of Coxsackie, sons Charles Whitbeck and wife Claudia of California, Leslie McFoler Jr. and wife Patricia of California, and Peter McFoler and his wife Barbara of Coxsackie, also surviving are five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Born in Catskill as Sarah Becker, she was the only daughter of the late Bessie and Isadore Becker.

In 1939 she married Meyer Oren of Catskill.

Meyer owned and operated A. Oren and Sons Furniture with brother Isadore and later with son Allen.

She enjoyed cooking and baking, raising roses and playing with her grandchildren.

She was a member of Temple Israel of Catskill and Hadassah.

Upon retirement she moved to Del Ray Beach, Fla., and then to Rockland County.

In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by brothers Milton, Ben, Abe, Reuben and Harold Becker.

She is survived by children, Allan Oren of Catskill and Lisa Davis of Meredith, N.H.; grandchildren, Brian Oren of Ridgefield, Conn., Andrea Gordon of Randolph, N.J., Robin Epstein of Yehud, Israel and Laurie Mulsman of Salem, Mass.; great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Jessica Oren, Zachary and Zoe Gordon, Itai and Maya Epstein, and Rachel Mulsman.

He retired from the New York City Transit Authority after more than 30 years as a towerman.

He was born April 17, 1960 in Puerto Rico.

Neftali is survived by his longtime companion of 28 years, Myrna Ramirez; a son and his wife Olivero and Nina Perez of Queens; four daughters, Awilda Perez of Latham, Jessica Ramirez of Poughkeepsie, Elsie Alarcon of Hudson and Jennifer Alarcon of Hudson; a brother, Nelson Alarcon of the Bronx; and a sister Elsie Alarcon of the Bronx. Neftali is also survived by nine grandchildren.

He attended the ARC day program in Schoharie since 1981.

He is survived by many dear friends.

Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Sacred Heart Church in Palenville. Father Bonaventure Bionda, pastor of Sacred Heart, will officiate.

Interment will follow in the Cairo Cemetery.

Saugerties - Anita E. Fahey, 84, of West Saugerties Road, Saugerties died Friday, Jan. 26, 2007 at her residence after a lengthy illness.

Born March 5, 1922 in Staten Island she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Elizabeth Mitchell Stewart.

A former resident of Bard Avenue in Staten Island she was the daughter of the late employed by Dunn and Bradsheet there for over 10 years. A Saugerties area resident since 1986 she was a parishioner of 'St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic in Centerville. She was former member of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Staten Island.

Predeceased by her husband, Frank in 1993, survivors include one daughter: Donna A. Gomez of Saugerties, five grandchildren: Elisa, Ryan, Lauren, Francesca and Alexis Gomez all of Saugerties. One great granddaughter: Kyara Worthington of Saugerties and several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was predeceased by three sisters: Elizabeth Spencer, Carol Fahey and Veronica Kelleher and one brother: Joseph Stewart.

Her funeral procession will form 9: 15 a.m. Monday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home Inc., corner of John and Lafayette streets thence to St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic where at 10 a.m. a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered.

Interment will follow in the Blue Mountain Cemetery, Saugerties.

Saugerties - Frank E. Traver Jr., 85 of 34 Brady Rd., died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007 at the Ulster County Health Related Facility, Kingston, New York after a lengthy illness.

Born Aug. 29, 1921 in Schenectady, he was the son of the late Frank E. and Ellen Clark Traver.

A veteran of the United States Marine Corps he served during World War II. He formerly owned and operated a music store in Plattsburgh, New York for many years. An area resident for several years he was a former member of the Roosa Fleming Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 1386 in Kingston.

Survivors include 4 daughters: Andrea Lawrence of Saugerties, Diane Traver M.D. of the Bronx, Donna Traver of Saugerties and Ellen Traver of Las Vegas, Nev. Two brothers: Eugene Traver of Latham and Richard Traver of Albany. Two sisters: Barbara Kettler of Johnstown and Doris Ingram of Gloversville. Two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was predeceased by one brother: Everett Traver and one daughter, Marcia Traver in 1975.

His funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family with interment in the Mountain View Cemetery, Saugerties.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home Inc. corner of John and Lafayette streets, Saugerties.

Saugerties - Peter J. Casey, 55, of Bruin Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007, at the Benedictine Hospital after a long illness.

Born Dec. 27, 1951 in the Bronx, he was the son of the late Francis E. and Gertrude Gallagher Casey.

He was a graduate of All Hollows High School in the Bronx and a 1973 graduate of Iona College in New Rochelle.

Mr. Casey was employed by the Social Security Administration for 32 years.

An area resident since 1991, he was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Centerville and a former member of Our Lady of Assumption Roman Catholic Church in the Bronx.

He was active in area youth sports and was a coach in the Saugerties Little League for the A’s, in the Saugerties Babe Ruth for the Cardinals and the Yankees, and in the Saugerties Biddy League for the Naccarato Insurance Team.

He was an avid New York Giants fan.

Survivors include his wife, with whom he recently celebrated his 29th wedding anniversary, Maureen Gallagher; two sons, Peter John “PJ” and Kevin “Boomer” Casey, both of Saugerties; three brothers, John of the Bronx, Brother James Lawrence C.F.C. of New Rochelle and Frances Casey of the Bronx; a sister, Eileen M. Casey of Ardsley; and two nephews.

His funeral procession will form 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, corner of John and Lafayette streets, thence to St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church where a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.

Catskill – Leocadia “Lottie” Belsky, 94, of 2 Gardiner St., Catskill, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2007, at Livingston Hills Nursing Home, Livingston, New York.

Lottie was born in Likens, Penn. and raised in Shamokin, Pa. She was employed by the Arrow Shirt Company, and later owned and operated a beauty salon. Lottie was an avid ceramist and quilter. She was predeceased by her spouse of 52 years, John Kenneth Belsky, who died on Nov. 19, 1984. Lottie has been a Catskill resident since 1985 to be near her family.

Lottie is survived by her daughter, Florence, E. (Joseph R. Sr.) of Catskill; she was the loving mother of Donald, Joseph Jr., James, Kathleen, Karen, Ronald, Susan, William and Christopher; devoted great-grandmother of Thomas, Dominick, Joseph R. III, Paul, James, Matthew, Abigail, Ava, Anna, Nicholas, Anthony, Michael, and Erica.

Relatives and friends may call at Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill, on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, 157 Bridge St., Catskill.

The Rev. John L. Moyna will be officiating.

New York - Julia Ida Carr died on Jan. 26, 2007.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph Allen Carr; children, Wayne Maxwell and Susan (Alan) Schulz; stepchildren Laurence (Ruthann) Carr, Gerald (Noreen) Carr, Linda (Thomas) Kasper, Christine (Alan) Sadler and Kathleen (John) Osier; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, George (Catherine) Tobin and Leonard (Rosemarie) Tobin; several nieces and cousins and many friends.

Julia was predeceased by her husband, Gerald Flanigan, and grandson Christopher Maxwell.

There was no prior visitation.

Friends are invited to attend her funeral service Thursday, 10 a.m., in the Chapel of Vay-Schleich and Meeson Funeral Home, 1075 Long Pond Road.

Interment in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery will be held privately.

Catskill - Wilbur J. Cross, 64, was suddenly taken from his family on Monday evening, Jan. 29, 2007 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

He was born May 10, 1942 in Catskill, the son of the Brown late Raymond and Anita (Brandow) Cross.

A true pillar of our community, Wilbur retired in November 2000 as Past-President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board of Directors, after 39 years with Catskill Savings Bank. Wilbur and  unselfishly gave throughout his life and served on the Greene County Council of the Arts; Catskill Mountain Housing Authority;   Greene County Society; Red Cross; and numerous others. His work will continue to impact the lives of many. Wilbur’s greatness and character will forever be remembered by whose life he touched.

Mr. Cross is survived by his  wife, Mrs. Norma R. (Wiltsie) Cross of Catskill; two sons,  Kevin J. Cross of Greenwich, and Daryl H. Cross of Coxsackie; a brother, Raymond H. Cross Jr. of Catskill; a sister, Joan Schepp of Purling; one grandson, Chase Wilbur Cross  of Coxsackie and numerous nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call at Traver & McCurry Funeral Home 234 Jefferson Heights Catskill on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

James V. DeForest
Former Peckham president

Catskill - James V. DeForest Sr., 80, of Jefferson Heights, Catskill, died Jan. 29, 2007 at home after a long illness.

Born March 22, 1926 in Rochester, he was the son of the late Chester and Irene (Dittmar) DeForest.  James was a Cum laude graduate of Brown University with a degree in civil engineering.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

Jim was employed by Peckham Industries since May 1, 1952.  He relocated to Catskill and assumed responsibility for Cairo Redi-Mix and went on to become the company vice president for Peckham’s Upstate Division, and serve on the board of directors.

Jim assumed duties of the company president after the death of Jack Peckham in May 1981 and ran Peckham Industries for more than 12 years.

During this time he also served as president of the New York State Asphalt Paving Association.  In 1993 he reversed roles with the founders grandson and continued to serves as vice president, and on the board of directors until the present.

James was a long time member, past president and served on the board of directors as the Catskill Golf Club.

He also served on the Catskill Central Schools Board of Education.

He is survived by Mrs. Dorothy A. (Bachelor) DeForest of Catskill; five grandchildren, James V. DeForest Jr. and wife Carla of Greenville; Amy Gallagher and Husband Dan of Pennsylvania, John DeForest and wife Joann of Cottekill; Charlene Deforest of Catskill and Peter DeForest of Virginia; 18 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, William DeForest, and a sister Emily Semple.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon Saturday at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, 157 Bridge St., Catskill, with Father John L. Monya officiating.

Interment will follow in the Catskill Rural Cemetery.

Memorial donations in Jim’s name may be made to Community Hospice of Columbia-Greene, 47 Liberty St., Catskill, NY 12414.

Coxsackie – George Herbert Eckstein, 98, of Coxsackie, died Jan. 29, 2007, at his home, after a brief illness.

He was born in Belleville, N.J.

Eckstein was employed at Western Electric. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was stationed in the South Pacific.

Beginning in the 1930s, George spent weekends with his family at their farm in Coxsackie, he retired there in 1967.

He was predeceased by his five siblings Herbert, Grace and Howard Eckstein, Marie Lukowiak and Elsie Osowiecky.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at the W.C. Brady’s Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie, on Thursday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will take place on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will follow in the family plot of the Riverside Cemetery with full military honors.

GREENVILLE – Doris “Nona” Fancher, 75, of Grand Gorge died on Jan. 27, 2007 at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was born in Conesville on Feb. 12, 1931, daughter of the late Chester and, Beulah (Dodds) Germond.

She was a lifelong homemaker, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Doris loved doing puzzle books and taking care of family pictures.

She was pre-deceased by a son; Randy Fancher, a granddaughter; Marcy Fancher and a brother Ira “Roger” Germond.

Surviving are her husband of 58 years; Robert Fancher of Grand Gorge, N.Y. a daughter; Diane Williams (James), two sons; Daniel Fancher (Tami), Douglas Fancher (Connie), 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, a brother, Russell “Rusty” Germond (Shirley) & sister-in-law; Helen Germond.

Funeral services will be Saturday, 2 p.m., Feb. 3, at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Spring interment will be in the Manorkill Cemetery.

Greenport – Mary (Mariak) Renken, 86, of Greenport, died Jan. 28, 2007 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

Born in Hudson, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Katherine (Kwatanowski) Mariak.

Mary worked in the community for many years as· a Home Health Care Aide.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Helmuth H. Renken of Greenport; two daughters, Linda J. Renken of Greenport and Susan M. Renken-Mintzer and  husband David of Buffalo; two sisters, Rose Chelelli of Greenport and Sally Toth of Albany; two grandchildren, William Mintzer and Ellen Mintzer of Buffalo; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she is predeceased by three brothers, John, Andrew and Peter Mariak; and one sisters, Anne Barnish.

Friends and relatives are cordially invited to attend calling hours on Thursday from 2- 4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Valenti and Richards Funeral Home, 700 Town Hall Drive, Hudson.

Funeral services will be on Friday at 11 a.m. from the  funeral home with Pastor John Ogden, of the Calvary Assembly of God Church in Stottville officiating.
