Glasco—Salvatore J. “Taffy” Ferraro, 85, of Seyler Terrace, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003 at the Ferncliff Nursing Home in Rhinebeck.

Born Oct. 27, 1918 in Glasco, he was the son of the late Michael and Carmella Buonfiglio Ferraro.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U. S. Army where he was awarded the American Service medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct medal, The World War II Victory Medal and the American Defense Service Medal.

He was employed at IBM Kingston and Poughkeepsie in product control.

He was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s R. C. Church in Glasco and the IBM Quarter Century Club.

Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Conte Ferraro; children Marlene Emerick and John Ferraro, both of Saugerties, Nicholas Ferraro of Malden and Michael Ferraro of Glasco; sisters Jane Misasi and Anna Ferraro, both of Saugerties, and Louise Saulpaugh of Glasco; two granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brother Peter Ferraro and sister Mary Amendola.

His funeral procession will form at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc., corner of John and Lafayette Streets, thence to St. Joseph’s R. C. Church where at 10 a.m. a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by the Rev. Charles Zannotti. Interment with military honors by the Saugerties American Legion Post No. 72 will be held in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Barclay Heights, Saugerties.

Timothy A. Finch                           Welder at Dynabil

Catskill—timothy A. Finch, 43, of Five Mile Woods Road, Catskill, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003 at his residence.

He was born in Catskill on June 9, 1960 and was the son of Allen G. and Margaret E. (Foster) Finch of Lafayette Street, Coxsackie.

Mr. Finch had been a lifetime area resident and was an employee of Dynabil Industries of Coxsackie as a welder.

He loved auto racing, reading, hunting and driving.  He was also an avid animal hunter.

Besides his parents, Mr. Finch is survived by his wife, Sonya J. Fabrizio of Catskill; a stepdaughter, Kyrsta Spencer of Catskill; two daughters, Mikaylah and Mariah Finch, both of Catskill; a brother, Rodney Finch of Star Lake; a sister, Wendy Finch of Coxsackie; three nieces, Sara, Meghan and Molly; and a nephew, Eric.

Mr. Finch was predeceased by a sister, Wanda Finch.

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2 at the W. C.  Brady’s Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie.

Funeral services will take place 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at the funeral home.

Interment will follow in the family plot at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Coxsackie.

Contributions may be made to the New York Oncology and Hemotology Department, 1003 Loudon road, Latham.

Eugene Kenna         Purchasing director

Norton Hill—Eugene “Gene” Kenna, 74, died at St. Peter’s Hospital on Dec. 30, 2003.

He was born in the Bronx on Dec. 19, 1929, son of the late Patrick and Catherine (Ferrel) Kenna.

Gene was retired from the Combine Life Insurance Co. in Albany, where he had been the purchasing director. He had formerly been employed by Look Magazine in their publishing department in Manhattan before they went out of business.

An avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed his football and baseball games.  Active in the local community, he had been a long time president of the Community Youth Baseball League.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father and a caring uncle to him many nieces and nephews.

Surviving are his wife Patricia (Murphy) Kenna and son Patrick Kenna, of Norton Hill, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by  sisters Christine Theiss and Genevieve Maloney.

Funeral Services will be Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 at 10:15 a.m. from the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81 in Greenville with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. from Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 2 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Interment will be in the Greenville Cemetery.

Those who desire may contribute in him memory to the Greenville Rescue Squad or to the Community Youth Baseball League.

Rose A. Prendergast                  Secretary

Valatie—Rose Annette Prendergast, 70, formerly of Cairo, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 20003 at Barnwell Nursing Home.

Born Aug. 25, 1933 in the Bronx, she was the daughter of the later Theodore and Lucille (DeRosa) Patavino.

She was a secretary at the Royal Typewriter Company in Manhattan before retiring.

Mrs. Prendergast was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Catskill.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Scott and Debbie Dobos, granddaughters Jenna and Stacey Dobos, all of Catskill; sister and brother-in-law Sylvia and Frank Guerriero of Glen Head, Nassau County; niece Marisa Lucille Guerriero and goddaughter Julia Ann Guerriero.

She was predeceased by her husband Robert F. Prendergast; granddaughter Michelle Ann Dobos; and stepson Fred Prendergast.

A Calling hour will begin at 11a. m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2004 at the Bates & Anderson-Redmond & Keller Funeral Home, 110 Green St. in Hudson.

Services will follow at noon on Friday at the funeral home.

Spring interment will be in Cairo Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Breast Cancer Awareness.

Dolores M. Schwerbel                       Ladies Auxiliary member

Catskill—Dolores M. Schwerbel, 85, of St. Joseph’s Villa, formerly of Palenville, died Dec. 30, 2003 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson after a long illness.

She was born in Brooklyn on Jan. 22, 1918 and was the daughter of the late Albert and Marie (Byrne) Warde.

She had been an area resident of Greene County since 1962 and was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church of Palenville and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Palenville Fire Department.

She loved cooking and playing dartball. She loved cats and had an excellent cat collection.

She is survived by sons Paul R. Weissflog of Riverhead and John A. Schwerbel Jr. of Acra; daughters Vivian Sheehan of Northport and Dolores E. Maggio-Kinsey of Athens; sister Mabel Weeks of Lindenhurst; nine grandchildren including Frances M. Magio of Athens; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Richards Funeral Home, 28 North Vernon St. in Athens.

Interment will take place in the spring next to her late husband John A. Schwerbel, who predeceased her on Aug. 30, 1994, in the family plot of the Palenville Cemetery.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 2 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Louis P. Busch                 U.S. Air Force veteran

Winchester, VA—Louis P. Busch, 62, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004 at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

Born Feb 22, 1941 in Nyack, NY, he was the son of the late Thomas Busch, Sr. and Mildred Lewis Ossman.

He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.

He is survived by his wife Rosemary Hansen Busch; two sons, Lewis and Richard Busch of South Cairo; two daughters, Kimberly Wanser and Donna Hall, both of Winchester, six grandchildren and a brother, Richard Busch of Selkirk.

He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Busch.

Services and interment will be hold at a later date in New York.

Marguerite Diamond                  Lifelong area resident

West Coxsackie—Marguerite Diamond, 65, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany.

She was born Feb. 7, 1938 in Coxsackie, the daughter of the late William and Flora (Waddington) Diamond.

A life-long resident of Coxsackie, she was a graduate of Coxsackie-Athens Central School.

Marguerite enjoyed country music, her computer and putting puzzles together.

She is survived by sisters Nita Millett of West Coxsackie, Nellie Margiasso and Margaretta Nuite, both of Coxsackie, and Marry Hammond of LaCanto, Fla.; brother Manley Diamond of Hickory, NC; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by brothers Charles Diamond in 1967, William Diamond in 1978 and sister Alida Dufkin in 1984.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 5 form the Sopris Funeral Home, Inc., 11877 Rte 9W in West Coxsackie. The Rev. Stan Lemons will officiate.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and may call on Monday, Jan. 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Interment will follow in the Riverside Cemetery, Coxsackie.

Barbara J. Glover                         Bus Driver

Cornwallville—Barbara J. Glover, 42, passed away suddenly on Jan.1, 2004 at the Albany Medical Center in Albany.

Barbara was born in Albany on Dec. 5, 1961, daughter of the late Robert and Ruth (Motala) Byrnes.

She was employed as a bus driver by Coxsackie Transport in Coxsackie. Barbara loved her family and loved being in the mountains and being outdoors. She was the proud mother of a daughter, Airman First Class Tiara Glover serving her country in the United States Air Force.

Besides her parents, Barbara was also predeceased by a brother, Steven Byrnes and a sister Susan Ann Byrnes.

Surviving are her daughter, Tiara Glover of Columbia Air Force Base in Columbus, NC; step-son, Jimmy Glover of Kiefer, OK; her significant other, Dan Stewart of Cornwallville; two brothers, Robert Byrnes and his wife Donna of Climax and Edward Byrnes of Cornwallville; three sisters Judy Gosse and her husband Albert of Selkirk, Diane Urell of Bixby, OK and Cindy Powdrill and her husband Wayne of Sapulpa, OK and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held from the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81 in Greenville on Monday, Jan. 5 at 10:30 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, Jan. 4, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Route 9W in Glenmont.

Edward W. Hadden    Auto Mechanic

Catskill—Edward W. Hadden, 84, of 5 Bartow Street, died Jan. 1, 2004 at his residence. 

He was born in Athens on Feb. 6, 1919, the son of the late Clifford and Edith (Day) Hadden.

Prior to retiring, Edward was an auto mechanic or Al’s Garage on Main street in Catskill. During World War II, he served his country in the United States Army Air Force from 1941 to 1945. He loved bowling, hunting and fishing. He was also a past member of the Odd Fellows of Catskill.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Betty in 1960.

Survivors include a daughter, Laurie Hadden of Acra; two sisters, Mildred Fredenburgh of Livingston, and Ella Gallagher of South Cairo; three grandchildren, Dawn Strang, Jennifer Stevens and Adam Hadden; and a niece, Barbara Girard of Albany.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at the Richards Funeral Home, Bross Street in Cairo, on Monday, Jan. 5 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Private cremation will take place at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

Greenville—Eleanor J. Jacobsen, 70, of Route 81 died Jan. 1, 2004 at her residence after a long illness.

She was born in Catskill on Sept. 4, 1933, the daughter of the late Victor and Doris (Curtis) Benjamin.

She was a resident of Kinderhook for 30 years, and then moving to Freehold and Greenville with the past 16 years.

She was an avid poker player and a member of the Kinderhook Ladies Elks. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance in Albany.

She is survived by her husband, Rafael, of Greenville; two sons, Harold, Jr., of Abington, MD and David of Greenville; a brother, Steve W. Benjamin of Athens; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she is predeceased by a son, Barry; three brothers, Victor, David and Norman; and a sister, Evelyn Stall. 

Memorial services will take place at her residence at a later date.  Private cremation will take place on Saturday at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands.

Richard W. Smalley                Cosmetologist

Old Chatham—Richard Warren Smalley, 77, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004 at his residence following a long illness.

Born on Feb. 26, 1926 in Athens, he was the son of the late Ruben and Julia (Brown) Smalley.

He was a cosmetologist and hairdresser by trade and a driver for the Register-Star newspaper in 1965, former paramedic and dairy farm worker.  He was also an avid country western singer who sang under the stage name of Ken Sterling, performing and talk show host for radio stations WOKO and WABY.

Mr. Smalley was a former member of the Masons Sons of Widow’s Lodge in Livingston.

He was a prisoner of war, serving his country in World War II. He served four years in the U. S. Army and four years in the U. S. Navy.

He is survived by his special companion Deloris Keegan with whom he resided; previous wives Agnes, Vera, Janice and Evelyn; sons Richard, Scott, Michael, Gordon, and Kevin; daughters Darling Dee, Julia, Nancy, Pamela, Jodie and Lynette; eight grandchildren and special friends Don and Patricia Kisser.

He was predeceased by his parents, son Patrick who died at birth and two sisters, Emma and Ruth.

There will be no calling hours. Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Private cremation will take place at Albany Rural Crematory in Menands.

Arrangements are under the care of the French, Gifford and Preiter Funeral Home, in Chatham.

East Durham—Helen L. Mack, 79, of East Durham, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004 at Columbia-Greene Long Term Care in Catskill.

She was born in East Durham on April 5, 1924, daughter of the late Harry and Florence (Tubbs) Lawyer.

A lifelong homemaker, she was a member of the East Durham Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, the Durham Valley American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the Town of Durham Ambulance Squad, a member of the Durham-Oak Hill United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and was director of the junior choir.

Mrs. Mack was also a Town of Durham assessor for several years.

Survivors include he husband, Fred Mack; two sons, Alan Mack and his wife Linda of East Durham and Jeff Mack and his wife Cindy of Waterford; a daughter, Kristine Morocco and her husband Frank of Athens; and two grandchildren, Adam and Kimberly Mack.

Mrs. Mack was predeceased by a granddaughter, Becky Mack, two brothers, Raymond and Stanley Lawyer, and a sister, Evelyne Bently.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday from the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville.

Funeral services will be 10 a. m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Interment will be in the Winston Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Town of Durham Ambulance Squad or the Durham-Oak Hill United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.

Catskill—Catherine M. Costanzo of 141 Jefferson Heights, Catskill, died suddenly, Sunday, Jan. 4 at home.

She was born in Stoke of Trent, England, the daughter of the late Samuel and Ivy (Stanier) Colcough.

Mrs. Costanzo was an employee of the Bank of New York in White Plains, prior to her retirement.

Formerly of Prattsville, she was predeceased by her husband, August Costanzo on Dec. 2, 1992, and a sister, Doris Henning.

Survivors include two nieces; a brother-in-law, Frank Constanzo of Pleasantville; dear friends Harry and Betty Klinglers of East Chatham, Joseph DeSanits of Catskill; and Judith Ench of Catskill.

Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Town of Catskill Cemetery. The Rev. John J. Murphy, Pastor, St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church of Catskill will be officiating.

Funeral services are under the direction of the Traver & McCurry Funeral home, Catskill.

Coxsackie—Marian H. Gaffney, 86, of 295 Mansion St., Coxsackie, died Jan. 4, 2004 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany.

She was born July 20, 1917, and was the daughter of the late John and Anna M. (Pate’) Gaffney.

She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Coxsackie, she worked for the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

She also was the Postmaster of the West Coxsackie Post Office prior to her retiring.

She was a member of the Columbiaettes #548. She also loved to garden and traveling.

Survivors include many devoted cousins.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters Rosanne and Theresa.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7 at the W. C. Brady’s Sons Inc., Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie.

Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 10 a.m. Thursday at the St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Coxsackie with Rev. Fr. J. Moyna, Pastor, and Rev. Fr. Neil Verschneider as the celebrants.

Durham—Thelma B. “Teddy” Theiss, 74, of Durham died Jan. 4, at St. Peter’s Hospice Inn in Albany.

She was born in Richmond Hill, N. Y., on June 7, 1929, daughter of Thelma Bell and the late Marshall Bell.

Mrs. Theiss was a 1947 graduate of Greenville Central High School. She also completed a year of Post Graduate education. She was a secretary with the Pioneer Insurance Co. and Steven Hahne’s (Hahne & Link) Insurance Co. where she was employed for 15 years.

Mrs. Theiss and her beloved husband, Daniel, married on Sep t16, 1950 and shared 53 years of marriage.

She was a life member of the Oak Hill-Durham Vol. Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the Greene County Vol. Firemen’s Association Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of The Grange.

Survivors include her husband, Daniel Theiss and her mother Thelma Bell both of Durham.

A funeral service will be held 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the Cunningham Funeral Home, state Route 81, Greenville. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 7:30 p.m. prior to the service.

Ghent—Marie E. Peters, 86, formerly of Selkirk, died Jan. 5, 2004 at Green Manor Nursing Home in Ghent after a long illness.

She was born in Brooklyn on May 12, 1917 and was the daughter of the late Louis and  Elizabeth (Schmeckenbecker) Junod.

She was  an area resident since 1980, moving from Hampstead to Selkirk. She loved to read, knit and visit restaurants. She loved her family and spoiling her grandchildren. She also loved music and dancing.

Prior to her retirement, she was a secretary manager for The Schwartz Furniture Co., in West Hampstead.

She was survived by daughter Mrs. Joseph (Vikki) Demase of Jefferson Heights, Catskill; siblings, Louis and his wife Frances Junod, Elizabeth Noland and Elisie Peragine, all of Levitton, Mrs. John (Mildred) Timmons of Cairo; grandchildren Mrs. Rupert (Judith) Eisgruber and Joan Schear and fiance Bill Williams; great-grandchildren Stephanie Lane-Thiele and husband Corey, Jennifer and husband Willard Moore, William and Lauren Schear, Tiffany and Michael Eisgruber; great-great-grandchildren Tyler and Jordan Lane, Savannah and Taylor Huntsman and Makenzie Moore.

Riley VanHoesen Jr.               Maintenance worker

Albany—Riley VanHoesen Jr., 77, died Jan. 5, 2004 at Albany Medical Center.

He was born in Otego on Aug. 6, 1926 and was the son of the late Riley and Belle Brandow VanHoesen.

Riley was a dairy farmer for half of his life.  He drove a tractor trailer for American Steel and more recently worked at Albany Medical College in maintenance as a plumber for 17 years, retiring in 1989.

He was a member of the Helderberg Reformed Church in Guilderland Center, where he belonged to “Young at Heart” and the Helderberg Hilltoppers RV Club. During the 1960’s, he was fire police captain of the Oak Hill-Durham Fire Department. Riley was past member of the Elks Club Lodge No. 49 and the Moose Club in Palm Bay, Fla.

Riley known to most as “Jake,” was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

He is survived by his wife Betty Wallace VanHoesen; children Howard and his wife Patricia Van Hoesen of East Durham, Joyce Peterson of Valatie; stepchildren Rick Wallace and his wife Scherry of Guilderland Center and Roland Wallace and his wife Donna of Altamont; sister Ella Tompkins of Catskill and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mr. VanHoesen was predeceased by daughter Barbara Maxwell Case, brothers Burt and Carlton VanHoesen and sister Alyce Partridge.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004 at 10 a.m. at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road in Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Avenue).

Calling hours will be on Thursday, Jan. 8 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Memory’s Garden, Colonie.

Marguerite R. Roberts             Nurse’s aid

Catskill—Marguerite Ruth Roberts, 80, of Buttermilk Falls Road, died Wednesday, Jan., 4, 2004 on route to Columbia Memorial Hospital following a long illness.

Mrs. Roberts was born on April 15, 1923 in Windham to the late Herbert and  Anna Pond Plankenhorn.

She married Marshall Roberts on Sept. 25, 1943 and worked at St. Joseph’s Villa as a nurse’s aide for 39 years until her retirement in 1978.

Mrs. Roberts is survived by her children, Marshall Roberts of Ulster Park, Priscilla O’Kesson of California, Ronald Roberts of Castleton, Anna Bell Heath and Phyllis Tozier, both of Catskill, 22 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Marshall Roberts in 1979, sons Edward Roberts on Jan. 13, 1974 and Donald Roberts on Oct. 7, 2000 and sisters Kathleen Elizabeth and Marjorie.

Private cremation was conducted at the Albany Rural Crematorium on Thursday, Jan. 8, 204.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 at the Catskill Rural Cemetery at 11 a.m. with clergy from St. Patrick’s R. C. Church officiating.  Those who wish to attend may meet at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill at 10:30 a.m. for the procession to the cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Villa, 38 Prospect Avenue, Catskill, NY 12414.

Leeds—Peter Adam Suttmeier, 98, of Sandy Plains Road, died Jan. 7, 2004 at Community Hospice at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson after a long illness.

He was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 15, 1905 and was the son of the late Ferdinand and Elizabeth Suttmeier.

Peter owned and operated the Suttmeier Farm and Chainsaw dealership in Sandy Plains, South Cairo, for many years.

He is survived by sons, Robert of Purling, Peter of Donnellon, Fla. and Kenneth of Leeds, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at the Richards Funeral Home, Bross Street in Cairo, on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Retta Lykens, Pastor of the South Cairo United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will take place next to his late wife Mary Frances Suttmeier in the family plot of the Catskill Town Cemetery. She predeceased him on Dec. 28, 1977.

Thomas Scarselli             Consult to the Department of Defense

Dunkirk, MD—Thomas L. Scarselli, 73, of Dunkirk, Md. Died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004 at home.

He is the beloved husband of 48 years of the late Mildred Jean Scarselli and loving father of Star Lee Pascoe of Westminster, Md., and Anthony J. Scarselli of Gambrills, Md.

Mr. Scarselli lived in Dunkirk for more than 14 years and retired for the federal government he served as a telecommunications professional with more than 35 years of service. After retiring, he served as a consult to the Department of Defense.  His hobbies included water fowl carving with many of his carvings receiving awards and honors.  He was  a member of the Knights of Columbus, Sacred Heart Council and Jesus the Good Shepard Catholic Church, working actively with the Widowers Group.

Survivors include his children and two brothers, Joseph Scarselli of Miami, and Louie Scarselli of Catskill; a sister, Marie Porto of Catskill; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

He was predeceased by his wife Mildred Jean; brothers Leon and Anthony Scarselli and sister Evelyn Baris.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday at Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Owings with the Rev. Paul Dudziak officiating.

Entombment with military honors at Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton, Md.  Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Lee Funeral Home Calvert, Owings, Md.

Matthew F. Sciarrillo                       Hunter House owner 

Hunter—Matthew F. Sciarrillo, 80, died on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004 at Kingston Hospital in Kingston.

Born on April 8, 1923 in Hoboken, N. J., he was the son of the late Juliano and Theo Linda D’Orlando Sciarrillo.

He was an entrepreneur, owning various businesses throughout his life including the Hunter House which he operated for many years.

Mr. Sciarrillo is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ann Denham Sciarrillo;  daughters Linda Nichols, Ronnie LaVegila and Patricia Ferrara; grandchildren Jody Nichols, Rebecca Hoagland, Tammy, John and Andrew LaVegila; and great-grandchildren Hannah, Aaron, Julianne and Ellie.

Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 at 11 a.m. at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus R. C. Church, Route 23, Main Street, Windham, with the Mass conducted by the Rev. James Schiffer.

Interment will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Ashland.

Carl L. Barkman                      Barkman Farms co-owner

Glenmont—Carl L. Barkman, 73, of Route 9W and formerly of Greenville, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004.

Born in Middleburgh, NY on Aug. 4, 1930, he was the son of the late Leslie and Lida (Proper) Barkman.

Carl was a graduate of Greenville Central School and a self-made man. He was employed by Orange Moters in Albany for 27 years until his retirement in 1978 as vice-president and general manager.  He was co-owner of Barkman farms in Glenmont with his wife Peggy. 

Carl was a member of the Bethelhem Elks Lodge #2233 in Selkirk, the Norton Hill Wildlife Club, the Florida Eagles, the James M. Austin Masonic Lodge #557 in Greenville, a life-time member of the North East Stock Car Old Timers and a former member of the Greenville Democratic Club.

Carl was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was a natural leader who will be remembered and missed for his caring and generous spirit. Carl enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, cooking, entertaining, living life to the fullest and being the boss.

Carl is survived by his wife, Margaret (Peggy) Miller Barkman; his sons, Carl D. of Sarasota, Fla., Randy Barkman and his wife Mary of Medusa, Gary Barkman and his wife Debra of Selkirk and Paul Miller of St. Louise, MO; his daughters, Leslie Martin of Cobleskill, Beverly Moore and her husband James of Medusa and Valerie Hotaling of Coeymans Hollow; grandchildren Lindsay, Rachel, Lacey, Curtis, Kohlton and Garrett Barkman.  James and Melissa Moore, Drew and Neal Martin, Jessalyn, Evan and Jamie Hotaling and Tyler Miller; aunt Phyllis Barkman of Hudson; nieces Annemarie, Marlene and Lisa and nephew Michael. 

He was predeceased by a brother, Paul Barkman.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Avenue, Delmar.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, Jan. 11 from 3 to 7 p.m.  Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Selkirk.

Coxsackie—Mildred R. (Bennett) Brockett, 83, died Jan. 8, 2004 at Community Hospice at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

Born in Troy on Jan. 15, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Margaret (Costello) Bennett.

She was a  lifelong resident of Coxsackie and a communicant of St. Mary’s Church of Coxsackie.  She loved birds and cats.

Prior to her retirement, she was a factory worker and also worked at Betty Jeans Dress Shop in Coxsackie.

Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Edwin W. Brockett and a son Joseph F. Brockett.

She is survived by four sons, Lavergne J. of Coxsackie, Michael J. of Catskill and Kevin J. and Paul T. Brockett, both of Earlton;  a daughter, Debra Speenburgh of Coxsackie; a sister Rita Rizzie of North Carolina; 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 9 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church with the Rev. Fr. J. Moyna, Pastor of the St. Mary’s Church of Coxsackie, as the celebrant.

Robbin S. Longworth                      Devoted grandmother

Cairo—Robbin S. Longworth, 45, passed away on Jan. 8, 2004 at the Columbia Memorial Hospital Emergency Room in Hudson.

Born in Newburgh, NY on Aug. 25, 1958, she was the daughter of the late William and Lillian Caston.

Robbin was a member of Flora and Fauna organization-Friends of the Earth of Cairo. She lived her life with kindness and gentle mess. She was a devoted grandmother to her grandchildren.

Robbin is survived by two daughters, Sherrie Parker of Greenville and Danielle J. Devoe of Pinebush; a son, Devin Davenport and step-son John S. Hughes; two sisters, Cathi Annese and Sandy Muller, both of Cairo; a son-in-law, Justin Parker of Greenville; four grandchildren, Alex, Austin, Marissa and Lily. She is also survived by her soul-mate and best friend Steve Hughes and her mother-in-law Muriel Adams.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Richards Funeral Home in Cairo. Private cremation will take place at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands.

Marguerite R. Roberts               Nurse’s aide

Catskill—Marguerite Ruth Roberts, 80, of Buttermilk Falls Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004 en route to Columbia Memorial Hospital following a long illness.

Mrs. Roberts was born on April 15, 1923 in Windham to the late Herbert and Anna Pond Plankenhorn.

She married Marshall Roberts on Sept. 25, 1943 and worked at St. Joseph’s Villa as a nurse’s aide for 39 years until her retirement at age 78.

Mrs. Roberts is survived by her five children, Marshall Roberts of Ulster Park, Priscilla O’Kesson of California, Ronald Roberts of Castleton and Anna Bell Heath and Phyllis Tozier, both of Catskill; 22 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Marshall Roberts, in 1979, their two sons, Edward Roberts on Jan. 13, 1974 and Donald Roberts on Oct. 7, 2000 and by three sisters, Kathleen, Elizabeth and Marjorie.

Private cremation was conducted at the Albany Rural Crematorium on Thursday, Jan. 8.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at the Catskill Rural Cemetery at 11 a.m. with clergy from St. Patrick’s R. C. Church officiating. Those who wish to attend may meet at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill at 10:30 a.m. for procession to the cemetery.

Julius L. Sylvia                               School principal

Sparrowbush, NY—Julius Luke Sylvia, 87, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004 at St. Joseph’s Place in Port Jervis, NY.

He was born in New Bedford, Mass. on Sept. 7, 1916 to the late Julius V. and Mary Moniz Sylvia.

Julius was a retired principal for the Port Jervis High School, a former high school teacher in the Catskill and Poughkeepsie school districts and a retired Lt. Colonel for the United States Army.

He was an area resident for 44 years.

He was a former member of the Catskill and Poughkeepsie United Methodist Churches and at present member of the Drew United Methodist Church in Port Jervis.

He is survived by a son, Edward O. and his wife Mary  G. Sylvia of SeaBrook, MD; a sister, Delores Peters of Martinsville, VA; a step-grandson, Matthew Brett Ayers and his wife Jennie of SeaBrook, MD.

Friends and relatives may call a the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 East Main Street, Port Jervis, on Monday, Jan. 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. at the Drew United Methodist Church in Port Jervis, with the Rev. Robert Cassidy, officiating.

Burial with military honors will be at the Pine Hill Cemetery in Sparrowburgh.

Elwood Hitchcock               Educator

East Jewett—Elwood Hitchcock, 95, of East Jewett, died Saturday Jan. 10, 2004 at the Benedictine Hospital in Kingston.

Mr. Hitchcock was born March 22, 1908 to William and Grace Crandell Hitchcock in Big Hollow (Maplecrest).

He attended a one-room school in Big Hollow, graduated from Windham High School in 1927, attended teacher training class at Delhi, and did college work at New Paltz, Albany University and Cornell.

His career in education began in September 1928 and continued for more than 40 years. He taught in one-room schools in East Jewett and Maplecrest for six years; in the Saugerties School for five years; and at the Margaretville Central School for three years.

He then worked as director of guidance at three schools in Herkimer County for four years.

In December 1948, he became district superintendent of District No. 2 of Greene County which included five central schools. In 1967, the state Education Department enlarged the district to include 20 central schools in Greene, Delaware, Schoharie and Otsego counties; two occupational schools in Grand Gorge and Milford; and the  supplementary center in Stamford. On Feb. 24, 1971, he retired from a fulfilling career in education.

He also served as Boy Scout leader and president of the Rip Van Winkle Council of the Boy Scouts of America; as a Methodist lay speaker he spoke in many area churches over the years; he served as Sunday School superintendent and a member of the Gideons International.

Mr. Hitchcock also served as historian for the Town of Jewett for 25 years.

Writing as a hobby, he authored three books: “History of the Town of Jewett,”  “Big Hollow: A Mountaintop History” and “Hensonville.”

He wrote the East Jewett column for The Windham Journal and The Daily Mail for 35 years.

Married to Alvena DeLong on Aug. 18, 1938, the couple have been blessed with four wonderful children.

Survivors include his wife, son Thomas and wife Lonna of East Jewett; daughter Linda and her husband James Varelas of East Jewett; and daughter Susan and husband Hans Neugebauer of Melbourne, Fla.; grandchildren Kathy Marion, Peter Varelas, Christina Varelas, Rebecca Nelson, Andrew Hitchcock and Alison Hitchcock; and great-grandchildren Leanna, Nicholas and Joseph Marino.

Mr. Hitchcock was predeceased by a son, Lt. William E. Hitchcock, in 1965 and siblings Edwin Hitchcock, Wilfred Hitchcock and Eva Thompson.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Decker Funeral Home, Windham.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Jewett Presbyterian Church with Pastor Dianna Smith officiating.

Interment will be conducted in the spring at the convenience of the family in the East Jewett United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Elsie B. Hommel                Saleswoman 

Haines Falls—Elsie B. Hommel, 79, of Haines Falls, died peacefully, surrounded by her children, at the Firemen’s Home in Hudson.

She was born on Oct. 22, 1924 in Hunter to Palaemon and Nancy Lord Benjamin.

Mrs. Hommel was a retired saleswoman who had worked  at the former Jays Outlet in Tannersville.

She was a member of the Kaaterskill United Methodist Church in Haines Falls. She was an American Cancer Society Crusader and a charter member of the American Legion Bunt Brewer  Post 165 Auxiliary.

Mrs. Hommel was also an active worker in the Meals on Wheels Delivery and Tannersville Area Public Health.

Survivors include her husband Charles Hommel of the Fireman’s Home in Hudson; four sons, Charles “Skip” Hommel and his wife Patty of Coeymans Hollow, Dana Hommel and his wife Pat of Elka Park, Gary Hommel of Tannersville and Terry Hommel of East Jewett; a daughter, Gail Hommel of Tannersville, two brothers, Chester Benjamin of Elum, Wash., and Harold Benjamin of Elka Park; a sister Elaine Johnson of Tannersville; three grandsons, Kevin, Keith and Craig Hommel; a granddaughter Kristin Hommel; a great-granddaughter, Ciera Hommel; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday form the Aston Basagic Funeral Home, 7742 Main St., Hunter.

Cremation will be follow at the Wiltwyck Rural Crematorium in Kingston.

Funeral services will be 11 a. m. Sunday at the Kaaterskill United Methodist Church in Haines Falls.  Officiating will be the Rev. Karen Monk.

Interment will follow in the Haines Falls Cemetery.

Greenville—Julia R. Rundell, 95, of Greenville died at the home of her daughter in Los Angles on Jan. 2, 2004.

She was born in Paterson, N. J.  on Sept. 10, 1908, daughter of the late Martin and Kataryna (Puzio) Soltys.

Mrs. Runnell was a lifelong homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Anna Tarantino of Los Angeles, and Julie Eiliot of Kingston; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Anna Maxwell of Bellflower, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two husbands, John Ruskin and Edwin Rundell; a son, Stephen Soltuys; and two sisters, Sophie Stronzek and Mary Kopec.

Calling hours will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday prior to the funeral service.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville.

Interment will be in the Town of Catskill Cemetery.

Kiskatom—Margaret Emily Hogg, 91, of Kiskatom, died Sunday, Jan. 11, at Eden Park Health Care Facility where she had been a patient since last month.

Mrs. Hogg was born April 12, 1912 in Brooklyn to the late Thomas and Margaret Davis Triggs.

She was a hairdresser in Brooklyn prior to her marriage to the late Dudley Hogg on March 1, 1942.

She was a member of the Kiskatom Reformed Church, Greene County Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Town of Catskill Women’s Republican Club, life member of the  Kiskatom Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary, and delivered Meals on Wheels for eight years.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Sue) Golden of Kiskatom; three granddaughters: Wendy Doney of Kiskatom, Nancy Golden of Baltimore, and Emily Golden of South Cairo; three great-grandchildren: Westin, Madison, and Autumn Doney all of Kiskatom; dear cousin, Betsy Widirstky of Southold, N. Y.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hogg was predeceased by her husband, Dudley Hogg on Dec. 3, 1986; sister Betty Trigg, and two brothers, Thomas Easton and James Triggs.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 15, at 12 p.m. in the Remembrance Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. David C. Tipple, pastor of the Kiskatom Reformed Church officiating.

Robert L. Rox                                    Former owner Clover Motel

Freehold—Robert L. Rox, 84, of Freehold, died on Jan. 12, 2004 at the Samuel Stratton V. A. Medical Center Hospital in Albany.

He was born in Shelby, Ohio, on Nov. 17, 1919, he was the son of the late Ormond L. and Mary (Payne) Rox.

Mr. Rox served his country during World War II in the U. S. Navy. While serving aboard WSS Chateau Theirry he was wounded and received the Purple Heart Medal.

He was a truck driver for Allied Van Lines in Great Neck, L. I., He was also the former owner of the Clover Motel in East Durham.

He was a member of the Durham Valley American Legion Post 1416 and Tri-Town VFW Post 7729. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham.

Survivors are his wife, Eileen McHough of Freehold, a daughter, Fredlyn and a granddaughter in Dove, Del., two brothers Dean Rox and Harry Rox and a sister JoAnne Bonnett all of Shelby, Ohio.

Mr. Rox was predeceased by his first wife Helen Rox and a step-son Neil Lynch.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Cunningham Funeral Home 4898 State Route 81, Greenville.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham.

Burial will be in the Freehold Cemetery in the spring.

Catskill—Stanley Ambroziak, 86, of 109 Bridge St., died after a long illness on Jan. 13, 2004 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson where he had been a patient since Jan. 10.

He was born in Jersey City, N.J., on Aug. 19, 1917 and was the son of the late Stanislow and Juzefa (Podurgiel) Ambroziak. 

He has been an area resident since 1978, moving from Trenton, N.J. to Greene County. He liked to work genealogy and prior to his retirement, he was an engineer for the state of New Jersey.

He is survived by several grandchildren including Michael and his wife Sandra Esslie of Cairo and Joan and her husband Rick Bourque of Massachusetts,; several nieces and nephews including Dorothy Collins of South Cairo;  three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents and his wife, he is predeceased by brothers Leo and Chester and sister Josephine.

Memorial services will take place in the springtime at a later date.  Private cremation takes place today at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands.  Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Richards Funeral Home in Cairo.

Sophie V. Dombrowski                     Catskill resident

Catskill—Sophie Vita Dombrowski, 86, of 20 Clinton Ave., Catskill, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004 at the Columbia-Greene Long Term Care in Catskill.

She was born June 5, 1917 in Roger, N. C., the daughter of late Joseph and Anna (Dafka) Dombrowski.

Ms. Dombrowski helped the military during World War II when she worked at the Watervliet Arsenal from 1941 to 1944.

She later was an employee of Vogel’s Jewelry Store in Catskill for 35 years until her retirement in 1983.

Ms. Dombrowski was a faithful communicant of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic in Catskill. She played the harmonica at the 5 p.m. Maas for 27 years until illness made it impossible to attend mass.

Survivors include he faithful friend of 28 yeas, Anthony Salierno of Catskill; and several nephews. 

She was predeceased by a brother, Walter Dombrowski, and two sisters, Helen Goodrich and Martha Knowles.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill. The Rev. John J. Murphy, pastor, St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church of Catskill will be officiating.

Interment will follow in  St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Catskill.

Harold Bartholomew                Maintenance foreman

Spring Hill, Fla.—Harold Bartholomew, 94, of Janis Street, Greenport, died suddenly Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003 in Spring Hill, Fla.

Born in Nazareth, Pa., in 1909, he was the son of the late Thomas and Martha (Huth) Bartholomew.

Mr. Bartholomew was employed for over 60 years as maintenance foreman at the V& O Press in Greenport.

He was a life member of the C. H. Evans Hook and Ladder, a life member of the Greenport Volunteer Rescue Squard and a life member of Greenport Pumper No. 1.

Mr. Bartholomew animated the Sinclair Dinosaur for the 1964 World’s Fair and made the Olympic Torch Tribute in Hudson’s7th Street Park.  

Surviving are his son Robert Bartholomew of East Chatham; daughters, Jean Hover of Kernersville, N. C., and Elizabeth Boyer of Somers, Westchester County, eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Maude (Cox) Bartholomew and 11 brothers and sisters.

Caecilie Gentalen                 Born in Russia

Belleview, Fla.—Caecilie Gentalen, 89, of Belleview, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Lady Lake Specialty Care Center.

A native of Estonia, Mrs. Gentalen was born on Jan. 30, 1914 in St. Petersburgh, Russian to Mart and Karoline Ruubel.

Mrs. Gentalen was a strong woman and led a long an event-filled life. As a child she escaped from Russia during the Bolshevik Revolution and after 26 years of Estonian Freedom.  She and her family were forced to flee Germany from the Russian invaders in 1944. She lived in German displaced persons camps until embarking for America in 1949.

Mrs. Gentalen and her family settled in Catskill where she was employed by Kanust Brothers Mushrooms Inc. in managerial positions. Subsequently, she started her own artistic career which she continued after her move to Belleview, Fla. in 1982.

She was predeceased in 1966  by her husband, Julius, a renowned Estonian artist.

Survivors include her sons and their wives: Tiit and Carol Gentalen of Lady Lake and Tom and Linda Gentalen of Athens; she is also survived by grandsons and their wives; Erik and Laura Gentalen of Redwood City, Calif. And Kirk and Amy Gentalen of Pescadero, Ca.

Richard W. Minnerly                   Mechanic

Catskill—Richard W. Minnerly Sr., 94, formerly of Coxsackie, died Dec. 11, 2003 at Columbia-Greene Long Term Care in Catskill where he had been a patient since June 21, 1997.

He was born in Yonkers on Sept. 16, 1909 and was the son of the late Charles and Isabel (Stewart) Minnerly.

Mr. Minnerly attended Saunders High School. He worked for the Otis Elevator Company as a chauffeur and lead mechanic until 1975 when he retired and moved to Coxsackie.

He is survived by sons Robert W. Minnerly (Sandra), of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Richard Minnerly Jr. (Beverly) of Baltimore, Md.; grandchildren Scott, Kim, John, Brian and Sydney; and six great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife Margaret in 1999; brothers Charles and Robert; sisters Elizabeth Connor, Alida Jones and Mary Delaney. His youngest sister Charlotte died in Minnesota four days after Richard’s death.

Private cremation took place at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands on Dec. 12, 2003.

A memorial service in his memory will take place at the Coxsackie First United Methodist Church on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Wendy Steed officiating.

Mr. Minnerly remains, as well as those of his wife Margaret, will be buried in Oakland Cemetery in Yonkers at 1 p.m. Graveside services will be held for members of the family and friends of Mr. Minnerly from Yonkers and the Westchester County area today.

In lieu of flowers, contribution in his memory may be made to the Columbia-Green Long Term Care Patient’s Activity Fund, 161 Jefferson Heights, Catskill, N. Y. 12414 or the Coxsackie First United Methodist, Coxsackie.

Martina Reinhardt                       Millinery designer

High Hill—Martina Siena (Fischer) Reinhardt, 90, died peacefully Jan. 4, 2004 at Evergreen Hospice in Kirkland, Wash., after a short stay.

A more-than-20-year resident of Greene County, Mrs. Reinhardt was bone in Westheim, Germany. She came to the United States in 1926 and resided in Staten Island.

She was an Alumna of Curtis High School in Staten Island and Baker Business School. She worked for several years a s a secretary but had  flair for more creative activities. She became a milliner and then a milliner designer responsible for creations of the New York fashion district.

She was an accomplished athlete and a passionate, competitive speed skater; and activity that she pursued into her 70’s. She was also an excellent bowler with an average of over 160 despite her engaging in this activity infrequently. She weighted on 105 pounds but held her own with several young high school football players in heavy garden work, much to their chagrin, although her good  humor caused then to accept it with smiles.

She was a homemaker after her daughter was born. She volunteered to work at Sailor’s Snug Harbor in Staten Island, and institution for aged and infirm seamen but she was hired as an employee and headed up the housekeeping department. She stayed on for 17 years until the institution relocated to North Carolina.  She loved the association with the old seamen and was beloved by them in turn. Some still corresponded with her until their deaths.

After her retirement, she relocated to the High Hill House, which she and her husband had built over the years and had been their summer home for the time they were married.  It was her joy gardening there and interacting with the wild creatures of the forest as much as they would permit.  She and her husband lived there year-round for some 20-odd years until they moved to Redmond, Va., four years ago to be near their daughter and grandchildren.

She was much beloved for her unfailing good humor, her hospitality and above all her ability to bring calm to a troubled situation. She related extremely will to children and so many, now grown, still remark about how they enjoyed the pizzas that she made for them when they were youngsters.

She was predeceased by her parents, brother Frank and sister Frieda.

Martina is survived by her husband Nicholas of Redmond, Va.; sister Vera Blauth of Big Pine Keys, Fla. daughter Martina Gruendike (Larry), grandchildren Jacqueline LeFort (Bruce Stevenson) and Larry J. Gruendike (Lauren Blood), all in Seattle, Wash., area; several nieces and nephews; and one great-grandson.

Her family wishes to thank the Evergreen Hospice in Kirkland and express its gratitude for the extraordinary good and loving care that was given to her by the staff.

The memorial will be a family gathering.

Walter L. Baldwin           U.S. Army veteran

Acra—Walter Lee Baldwin, 84, of Chappell Road, died Jan. 15, 2004 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

He was born May 21, 1919 in Purling, NY and was the son of the late Bruce Baldwin and Kathryn Bouck.

Walt grew up in Purling where his parents owned the Baldwin Hotel. After graduating from the Cairo School he joined the United States Army. During World War II he was stationed in Central Europe and Rhineland where he earned Bronze Stars in the 100^th Infantry Division.

Walt married Laura M. Meddaugh on March 21, 1942. He worked as a carpenter all his life and belonged to Local 2161 of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. Prior to his retirement, he worked for Phoenix Electric. Walter was also a member of the American Legion Post of Cairo and a lifetime member of the Cairo Hose Company, serving 32 years as Fire Commissioner.

Walt is survived by his son Thomas Baldwin; daughters-in-law Christy Pederson and Francine Alverson; sister Katherine Moffitt; grandchildren Jeffrey Baldwin (Missy), Kerry Overbaugh (William), Stacey Deyo (David), William Yager (Karla); great-grandchildren Samantha, Cameron, Mitchell, Kevin, Megara, Keegan and William, as well as nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Laura in 1998, great-grandson Benjamin Overbaugh, three sisters and two brothers.

Friends and relative are invited to call at the Richards Funeral Home, 383 Bross Street, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18.  There will be American Legion and Cairo Hose Company memorials.  Interment will be in the Round Top Cemetery.

Catskill—Mr. Charles Stanley Bishop, 83, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

He was born July 20, 1920 in West Camp, NY, the son of the late Louis and Jennie (Harder) Bishop.

Mr. Bishop was a logger and sawyer.  He was also a Deputy for the Ulster County Sheriff’s Department for nine years. He later was a self-employed contractor prior to his retirement.

Mr. Bishop was predeceased by his wife Mrs. Julia R. Bishop on July 15, 1994; brother Francis Bishop and sister Eleanor Wager.

Mr. Bishop is survived by five daughters, Julia V. Bishop, Charlene H. Henderson and her husband Jack, Susan J. K. Bishop, Kim N. Bishop and her fiancé Craig Loesch, all of Catskill, and Donna M. Hancock of Florida; a son, Charles L. Bishop and his wife Deborah of Tennessee; a sister, Virginia Harbig of Kingston; nine grandchildren, Jason, Jonathan and Heather Henderson all of Catskill, Christopher, Kystal and Charles Hancock, all of Florida, Charles, Daniel and Bryan Bishop, all of Bristol, Tenn. And many nieces and nephews.

Catskill—Sally V. Murran Bennett, 65, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004 at the Westchester Medical Center where she had been a patient.

Mrs. Bennett was born in Poughkeepsie on Sept. 17, 1938 to the late George and Olive Irish VanDeWater.

Following college, she married the late Charles H. Murran, Sr. and they resided in Sullivan County with their four children. Mr. Murran predeceased he on May 31, 1979.

She moved to Kingston in 1984 and was an office clerk at New York Telephone until retiring in 1992. On Nov. 23, 1991 she married Earl E. Bennett and they moved to Catskill where she was an active volunteer at Olana.

Mrs. Bennett is survived by her husband Earl E. Bennett of Catskill; children Mrs. William (Jennie) Barclay of Teasdale, UT, Joyce Murran of Kingston, Judy Murran of Columbia, OH and Charles H. Murran, Jr. of Saugerties; step-daughter Mrs. Joseph (Jill) Toole of Palenville; grandchildren Olivia Clare, Meaghan, Andrew and Wesley Barclay, Rileigh Toole and Earl James Bennett; sister Doris Porter of Poughkeepsie and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, first husband and sister Irene Butler.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004 at 11 a.m. in the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home  at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill. Private cremation will follow at the Albany Rural Crematorium.

Coxsackie—Theodore G. Lennon, 80, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 at the Jackson County Hospital in Marianna, Fla.

He was born in Durham, NY on Dec. 19, 1923, son of the late Matthew and Marguerite (Bartholomew) Lennon.

Ted retired from the New York State Department of Transportation in 1986 having worked in the Coxsackie area.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Lois (West) Lennon; son Theodore Lennon and his wife Deborah of Ravena, NY; daughter Susanne Lennon of Cottendale, Fla., Cindy Reveal and her husband Paul of Delanson, NY and Debra Schnare and her husband Bill of Climax, NY;  brother Donald Lennon of Bostic, NC, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville, NY.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, Jan. 19 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Interment will be in the Catskill Rural Cemetery.

Harrison E. Hornbeck              Advertising director

Brunswick—Harrison Everet Hornbeck II, 83, of Brunswick, died at Brunswick hospital., Friday, Jan. 16, 2004.

He was born on Oct. 11, 1029, in Catskill, the son of the late Harold C. and Cleora C. Hornbeck.

He graduated from Syracuse University School of Journalism in 1942.

During World War II he served as first lieutenant  with the 788 Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion of the 9^th Army. He served in European Theater of Operations in France, Belgium and Germany.  His unit was engaged in the Battle of the Bulge.

He married Lucille Hoag on April 5, 1947, in Binghamton, N. Y.

After the war he was employed as the advertising manager of The Courier-Standard-Enterprise, a weekly newspaper in Fort Plain, N.Y., and later served as the newspaper’s vice president, In 1969 the became the advertising manager of The Amsterdam Recorder, a daily newspaper in Amsterdam.  Until his retirement in 1986 he was assistant to the publisher of the Recorder and general manager of its weekly newspaper.

He served as an officer of the New York Press Association for many years and was its president from 1985-1986. He had been a member of the Board of Directors of Amsterdam Chamber of Commerce and member of the Board of Directors of Montgomery County Big Brothers/Big Sister, and he was a life member of  the Fort Plain Rotary Club.  He was a member of the Fort Plain Reformed Church and, later, of the Canajoharie Reformed Church.

He and his wife moved to Maine in 1987. He was a member of the First Parish Church in Brunswick, as well as a volunteer at Mid-Coast Hospital and a former member of the Board of Directors of the 55-plus Center.  He was also a volunteer Bowdoin College track official.

In addition to Lucille, his wife of 57 years, he is survived by a daughter, Mary Beth Feldman, and her husband, Michael of Bowdoin, ME; a daughter, Jan Chapman and her husband Dudley of Medina, Ohio; a daughter, Susan Hornbeck of Holland Patent, N. Y.; a son, Robert Hornbeck and his wife, Joan Andrews of Vienna, Va.; seven grandchildren; Daniel Samuel and Sarah Feldman; Ian and Ben Chapman; and Kailyn and Kathryn Hornbeck.

Mr. Hornbeck was predeceased by a grandchild, Rachel Feldman, in 1990.

Calling hours will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick.

A funeral service will be held 2 p., Wednesday at the Midcoast Presbyterian Church, Topsham with the Rev. Charles E. Ihloff of the First Parish Church officiating.

There will be a private burial service in the spring.

Esther M. N. Mackey                         Potter Hollow resident

Potter Hollow—Esther M. N. Mackey, 87, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004.

She was born in Potter Hollow May 11, 1916, to the late John and Clara Nickerson.

She was an only child and spent most of her years residing near the Preston Hollow area. She graduated for the “new” Greenville Central School June 1933. Esther and her loving husband, Howard, married on Sept. 3, 1937 and spent the next several years raising milk, cows, sheep and chickens along with two children on the old farmstead just north of Preston Hollow on Fox Creek Road.  Howard and Esther sold the farm in 1981 and lived the rest of their years just up the road in a well-groomed ranch style home.   Ester appropriately christened their new homestead, “Wind Swept.” The doors were always open for anyone who would stop by. Many delicious meals and desserts were prepared effortlessly and enjoyed at Howard and Esther’s kitchen table.

Those who knew Esther could attest to her profound faith in our Lord God. For several years she was an avid member of the Preston Hollow Baptist Church. She played the organ Sundays and for many special events occurring within the “Hollow.” Each Sunday she would create beautiful thematic arrangements with her hometown flowers and other bits of nature as a centerpiece in the church vestibule. During her last years, Esther attended and played the organ for the Potter Hollow Union Church.  She warmly considered members her loved ones.

Considering the realm of talents Esther was blessed with many, She was not only adept at playing the organ and arranging flowers, she also painted beautiful landscapes and portraits.

She was a talented letter writer and columnist for the Middleburgh News, Greenville Local and News Herald.  “Fox Creed Facts and Fancies.”  She never failed to recognize her neighbor’s accomplishments, and sentiment over their mishaps. She so creatively made us  chuckle over the antics of her grandchildren. She truly loved people and considered everyone her neighbor. Her giving heart and trademark signoff “Keep the Faith” will not be forgotten.

After her faith, the most important aspect of Esther’s life was centered on her grandchildren, Mary Helen, Christopher, Nicholas and her great-granddaughter, Lydia.  They brought so much and she gave much love to them.

Survivors include her beloved son, John Mackey and his wife Margaret, of Waynesville, Mo.; a daughter, Clair Mackey of Coxsackie; three grandchildren; one great-grandchildren and one cousin (“almost sisters”), Norma Fleischer of Kinderhook.

Mrs. Mackey was predeceased by her husband, Howard Mackey in 1992.

Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Preston Hollow Baptist Church, Preston Hollow.

Durham—Marie Edwards, 87, of Durham, died Monday, Jan. 19, at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill.

She was born March 10, 1916 in Brooklyn, daughter of the late Dominick and Rose Parente.

She was a retired purchasing agent having worked for Esquire Radio in Brooklyn. She was an Auxiliary Policewoman in the 62^nd Precinct. Upon moving to her home in Durham she loved the outdoors and her horses.

Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Harvey Edwards, a sister Rose Libretti and a niece Patricia Renee.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. from the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville with a Mass of Christian Burial at noon from Our Lady of Knock Shrine, East Durham.

Calling hours will be 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the services.

Valatie—Eleanor L. Layman, 67, of Valatie, died suddenly, Sunday, Jan. 18, at the Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

She was born Sept. 29, 1936, in Rensselaerville, daughter of the late Raymond and Lena (Wood) Tanner.

he moved from Huntington Station, L. I., having worked at Korvette’s as a salesperson and for a time owned the Village Hutte in Kinderhook with her former husband.

She then was employed at Universal Match in Hudson, and then for several years was a caregiver to many children in her home.

Mrs. Layman will be remembered for her giving nature, for her wonderful smile, for her charm and great sense of Humor.  She was a beautiful woman who was a loving mother, grandmother and a friend to many.

She was the former wife of Ernest Miller and Raymond W. Layman.

She was the mother of Darlene L. Layman of Menands, Raymond K. Layman of Arizona, and Deborah Tutuska of Topeka, Kan., beloved grandmother of Peter and Brianna Tutuska. Also surviving are a sister, Janet Furman of Clarksville; two brothers, Douglas Tanner of Voorhesville and Gardiner Tanner of Clarksville and several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mrs. Layman was predeceased by a sister, Bernice Waldron and five brothers, Charles, Roland, Niles, Robert and Raymond Tanner.

A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23 at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville.

Athens—Rose (Ciampa Kapusta) Stringer, 85, of 33 3^rd St. Athens, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004 at the Eden Park Health Care Center, Catskill, after a long illness.

Born in Athens Oct. 24, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Dominick and Mary Kapusta Sr.

Mrs. Stringer was a lifetime resident of the Village of Athens, a lifetime communicant of St. Patrick’s R. C. Church of Athens. She loved visiting friends and neighbors, therefore, was given the nickname of Rambling Rose. During her days of employment she worked for Greene County Memorial Hospital, New Baltimore Hot Shoppe, Athens Rest Home as a chef, also the Kaden Bros, Pocketbook Factory. She was also a senior companion for many years and liked to bake, cook, read and visit Foxwood.

Survivors include two sons, William of Coxsackie, and Thomas of Loudonville; two daughters, Jean Mayerhofer of Coxsackie and Cindy Wood of Athens; brother, frank Ciampa of Athens; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents she was predeceased by two husbands, William Ciampa and Charles Stringer; brother, Thomas Ciampa; six sisters and a grandson.

Calling hours are Wednesday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Richards Funeral Home, 28 North Vernon St., Athens.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s R. C. Church, Washington Ave., Athens, with the Rev. Fr. J. Nunan, pastor of the Sacred Heart Church, Cairo, officiating.

Interment will take place in the springtime in the family plot of the Old Athens Rural Cemetery.

Philip H. Zollo                       Former fire police captain

Palenville—Philip H. “Buddy” Zollo, 84, of Palenville, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at the Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehab Center, Staten Island.

Born July 26, 1919 in Richmond Hill, Queens, N. Y., he was the eldest son of the late Philip Zollo and Julia Ficke.

Mr. Zollo was a World War II veteran serving in the 82^nd Airborne and continued his military life in the New York National Guard where he attained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer.  He retired from the Guard and the New York State Armory in Brooklyn in 1970. That same year he and his wife Theresa moved to Palenville. Theresa died in 1997.  “Buddy,” as he was known was a 24-year member of the Palenville Fire Department and held the position of captain of the Fire Police for many years.

Survivors include, two sisters, Elyse Geib and Ruth Robson of Lindenhurst, sister Margaret Walker died previously and a brother, William Zollo of Augusta, Ga.; daughter, Phyllis “Sue” Minkalis of Palenville, Patricia DiMonda of Coram and June Zollo of Staten Island where Mr. Zollo resided for the last year and a half; son, Charles of Purling; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Private cremation was arranged by the Colonial Funeral Home of Staten Island.

Valatie—Lois A. (Anderson) Backie, 76, of the Barnwell Nursing Home in Valatie, died Jan. 20, 2004 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

She was born Sept. 1, 1927 in Brooklyn.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a waitress at Bell’s Coffee Shop in Catskill. She had been an area resident of Greene County for 30 years.

She is survived by her sons, John-Paul Backis of Athens, and Brian C. Backis of Catskill; grandchildren Robert John and Candace Leigh Backis, both of Catskill.

She is predeceased by her husband John A. Backis and her brother Buck Anderson.

Frank Corratti                   Avid bowler

Catskill—Frank “Pop” Corratti, 91, of Catskill, died Tuesday, Jan. 20. 2004, at Columbia Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since Jan. 17.

Mr. Corratti was born in Catskill on Apr. 8, 1912 to the late Angelo and Amelia Cimorelli Corratti.  He married the late Viola Emily Gabrielle on Dec. 18, 1934.

He had worked for Aerobilt in Athens prior to retiring. He was a avid bowler for many years.

Mr. Corratti is survived by his daughter, Rose M. Law of Catskill, and son Frank Corratti, Jr.; six grandchildren; Todd Duckworth and his wife Valerie Duckworth of Catskill, John Michael Law, Jr., Lisa Corratti, Laura Lee Corratti, Jackie Corratti, and Anthony Corratti, Jr.; two great-grandchildren; Kayla and Matthew Cooper; his brother, Philip Corratti of Catskill, and sister, Lucille Ricks of Florida.

He was predeceased by his wife Viola Corratti on Sept. 12, 2001, their son Anthony Corratti, and three brothers; Cosmo, Louis, and Angelo Corratti.

Private cremation will be conducted on Thursday, Jan. 22 at the Albany Rural Crematorium under the direction of the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Damian M. Riozzi                           U.S. Army veteran

Athens—Damian M. Riozzi (Dempsey), 82, of #1 Brick Row, died Jan. 21, 2004 at the Eden Park Health Care Center in Catskill where he had been a resident since Aug. 27, 2003.

He was born in Glasco, Ulster County on May 30, 1922 and was the son of the late Cosmo and Rose (Ricco) Riozzi, Sr.

During World War II, Mr. Riozzi served his country in the United States Army. He retired from the parts department of the Milroy Chevrolet Cadillac Dealership of Catskill.  He is a communicant of the St. Patrick’s R. C. Church in Athens and is a member of the Catskill Elks #1341, the Athens American Legion TGM, Rivertown Senior Citizens and the Athens Fire Department. He loved to walk, loved all sports and was a die-hard Yankee fan.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Angeline J. (Romano) Riozzi of Athens; daughters Rosemary Paolino and son-in-law Jeffrey of Parkland, Fla.  and Joann Knabbe and son-in-law Robert of Newburgh, NY; brother Cosmo and John Riozzi, both of Hudson; sister Mary Romano of Ravena; grandchildren Ross and Lee Paolino, Laurene, Megan and Alison Knabbe, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his brother Patrick in 1970.

South Cairo—Frances M. Howard, 82, of Scotch Rock Road, died Jan,. 23, 2004 at Albany Medical Center after a long illness.

She was born in Brooklyn on July 17, 1921 and was the daughter of the late James and Rose (Wynne) Keegan.

Frances was a Greene County resident for over 32 years.  She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church of Cairo and loved writing songs and poems.

She is survived by her children Ronald Howard of Massapequa, L.I., Joseph Howard and Evelyn Mary Conklin, both of South Cairo, and Roseanna Porter of North Carolina; sister Rose Keegan; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Russell F. Howard on Sept. 4, 1976, and her brother James Keegan.

Maplecrest—Antoinette MacGlashan, 90, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004 in Glenmont.

She was born in Windham on Oct. 29, 1913, the daughter of the late Carl and Wilhelmina (nee Schwier) Schwitter.

She is survived by her daughter Jean Kass of Glenmont; grandchildren Dawn Rowell, Deborah Kass, William MacGlashan, Linda Gleason and Kelly Ann Robbin, as well as two great-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by her husband Milton, son Malcolm, siblings William and Elizabeth Schwitter and Minnie Ballou.

A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, Jan 27, 2004 at 1 p.m. at the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham.

Calling hours will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday prior to the service.  Interment will be in the Maplecrest Cemetery, Maplecrest at he convenience of the family.

Catskill—Katharine “Tottie” Plank, 92, formerly of Grandview Avenue, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004 at he Thompson House in Rhinebeck where she had been a resident since May 29, 2003.

Mrs. Plank was born in Philadelphia on April 2, 1911 to the late George Frederick and Estelle Humpreys Park.

She graduated from high school and married Curtis Fiero Plank on April 21, 1935. She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Catskill, the Gretchens and the Catskill Garden club.

Mrs. Plank is survived by daughters, Mrs. John (Nancy) Conklin of Rhinecliff and Mrs. Thomas (Mary Jane) Copp of Brookfield, Con.; grandsons David Eric Staub of Pennsylvania and Timothy Michael Coop of Brookfield, Conn., as well as several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Curtis F. Plank on Sept. 10, 1995, brothers Richard George Park and Edward Humphreys Park and sister Barbara Park Overbaugh.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. at  the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill, with interment following in the Catskill Rural Cemetery.

Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home at 10 a.m. prior to the services.

Frederick J. Schiesser                 Welder

Cornwallville—Frederick J. Schiesser, 56, formerly of Athens, died at his residence Friday, Jan. 23, 2004.

He was born in the Bronx on March 1, 1947, the son of  Lillian (Warner) Schiesser and the late Frederick Shiesser.

He was a welder for William Moon Ornamental Works in Catskill.

Mr. Schiesser served in the U. S. Marine Corps form 1965 to 1969, attaining the rank of sergeant.  He served in Vietnam. He is a past commander of the VFW Post 770 in Catskill and a past captain of the Catskill Veterans Honor Guard.

He enjoyed raising snow pigeons and was a member of the American Turbit Pigeon Club. He traveled throughout the northeast to pigeon shows.

He is survived by his mother Lillian Schiesser of New Rochelle; wife Marie Sulkey of Cornwallville; stepchildren Frank Sulkey of Hannacroix, Katherine Sulkey of Coxsackie and James Sulkey of Cairo; sisters, Barbara Curran and Judy Schaal, both of Queens Village, Betty Lee of New Rochelle, and Ronnie Bolduc of Darien, Conn.; brother Gus Schiesser of Mamaroneck, eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004 at the Sopris Funeral Home, Inc., 11877 Route 9W in Coxsackie. A prayer service will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Sunday with the Rev. Jeremiah Nunan officiating.  The Catskill VFW Post 770 will conduct services at 6:30 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.

Interment will take place at a later date in the Veterans Section of the Catskill Rural Cemetery with honors from the Catskill Veterans Honor Guard.

Leeds—Audrey Livingston Welsh, 79, of Route 23B, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004 at the Albany Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 27, 1924 in Bronx, the daughter of the late John and Mildred (Skalnik) Livingston.

Mrs. Welsh was an employee of the Greene County Treasurer’s Office prior to retirement.

She was predeceased by her husband Charles F. Welsh on Dec. 6, 1981, son of Charles F. Welsh, sister Ethel DeLuca and brother John Livingston.

Mrs. Welsh is survived by son Gary Welsh of Leeds; daughter Susan Ormerod and son-in-law Paul Ormerod, both of Catskill; sister Grace Cavallo of Ridgefield, Conn.; sister-in-law Helen Livingston of Nashua, N.H., 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Catskill—Laura Yannone Halpin, 94, of Catskill and formerly Albany, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004 at Eden Park Nursing Home, in Catskill.

She was born Aug. 25, 1909 in Catskill, the daughter of the late Alex and Julia (DeSimone) Yannone.

Mrs. Halpin met her future husband James Halpin, Sr., and married in 1938. She moved to Albany and resided there until moving to Catskill in August 2003.

Mrs. Halpin is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James and Mary Jan Halpin, Jr., of Albany; a daughter, Marion Sinisgalli of Rock Ledge, Fla.; a brother Julian Yannone of Catskill; a sister, Jean Phillips of Catskill; five grandchildren, Dean Halpin, David Halpin, Dennis Halpin, Marion Gibb, and James Sinisgalli; six great-grandchildren; a niece and nephew, Noreen Esposito and Frank Yannone of Catskill; and a niece and nephew, Elizabeth and John Sheets of Syracuse.

Mrs. Halpin was predeceased by her husband in May, 2002. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Antoinette Peters and Adeline Sheets; and four brothers, Anthony Yannone, Alex Yannone, Jr., Frank Yannone and George Yannone.

Freehold—Joan F. Albin, 73, passed away Jan. 23, 2004 at the Albany Medical Center Hospital in Albany.

She was born in Bronx, NY on Dec. 23, 1930, the daughter of the late Vincent and Agnes (McGill) Bigley.

She was a telephone operator for several hotels in New York City, one of which was the Plaza Hotel. She relocated with her family to Freehold area in 1968.

Joan was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Freehold Fire Company. Joan was a life-long fan of the New York Yankees and loved doing her crossword puzzles.

She was predeceased by her son, Robert Albin.

Surviving are her beloved husband of 53 years, John Albin of Freehold; four sons, John Albin Jr., and his wife Elizabeth, Jayme Albin and his wife Ann, Raymond Albin and his wife Stephanie, all of Greenville, and Michael Albin and his wife Susan of Buena Park, Ca.; three daughters, Karen Yacobucci, Michelle Weidman, and her husband Victor, all of Freehold, and Ellen Stevens and her husband Orrin of Baldwinsville, NY; three brothers, William, Edward and Vincent Bigley; a sister, Margaret Wrynn; 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a special “like a son” friend, Joseph Salvino, Jr.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR81 in Greenville. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, Jan. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Coxsackie—Thomas J. Kenny, 17, of 37 Apple Blossom Lane, West Coxsackie, died suddenly Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004.

Born in Brooklyn July 30, 1986, he was the son of John F. and Donna M. (Hope) Kenney. 

Thomas has been a resident of Coxsackie since 1989. He was in his senior year  at Coxsackie-Athens High School and loved playing the drums, baseball and basketball.

Besides his parents, survivors include two sisters, Krysten and Jacklyn of Coxsackie; maternal grandmother, Patricia Hope of Brooklyn; godfather, Kevin B. Kenny of Brooklyn; grandmother, Sharon McAllister of Brooklyn; and many aunts and uncles, and cousins.

Calling hours will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the W. C. Brady’s Sons Inc. Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the First Reformed Church of West Coxsackie, 16 Washington Ave., with Rev. Paul Peters officiating.

Private interment will take place at the St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery.

The day of the funeral everyone is asked to meet at the church.

Joseph Procowich                 U. S. Army veteran

Hannacroix—Joseph Procowich, 88, passed away on Jan. 22, 2004 in Virginia Beach, VA.

He was born in New York City on Dec. 4, 1915.

Joseph served his country during World War II in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946. He was employed as a postal worker by the U. S. Post Office in the Bronx until his retirement in 1972.

Joseph was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He was active in Senior Services and was a member of a bowling league at Catskill Hoebowl in Catskill.

Joseph was predeceased by his mother and father; a brother, Walter; a sister, Olga; his beloved wife Esperanza “Hope” Procowich; and his dear friend Dorothy Freer.

Surviving are his daughter, Providence Estrada of Virginia Beach, VA; a grandson, Kenneth Estrada; and two great-grandsons, Joseph Paul and Thomas Michael Estrada/

A prayer service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 4 p.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR81 in Greenville. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m.  The Greenville American Legion Post #291 will conduct a service at 3:30 p.m.

Interment will be in the spring in the Greenville Cemetery.

Paramus, N. J.—Regina (Andreassen) Hegyi, 32 , of Paramus, N.J., died Jan. 24, 2004 at home after a brief illness.

Born in Norfolk, VA., she was formerly a resident of Saugerties, and East Providence, R. I.

She was a graduate of East Providence High School and Russell Sage College in Troy.

She was employed at Kingston Hospital and Wayne General Hospital in New Jersey as a physical therapist.

Survivors include her loving husband, Leo Hegyi Jr., a daughter, Emily and a son Erik, a sister, Andrea Andreassen of East Providence, R.I., a brother Chuck Dederick of Cementon; a sister, Joslynn Lynn of Catskill, her parents, Tom and Joy Andreassen of Leeds, her father-in-law and mother-in-law Lou and Klara Hegyi of Paramus, N.J., her paternal grandmother Agnes Andreassen and her maternal grandmother Dorothy Azevedo, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hegyi was predeceased by her mother, Nita (Azevedo) Andreassen.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Rochelle Park, N.J.

Albany—Patricia D. Lewis, 76, of Ohav Sholom Apartments, Albany, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born March 17, 1927 in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Oreste and Mary (Fiero) Sicignano.   Her parents relocated to Catskill in 1931 where she lived most of her life.

A graduate of Catskill High School, Ms. Lewis held a number of positions in retail, most recently at Barbizon in Colonie. She was formerly married to Arthur Webster, Proprietor of Arthur’s Beauty Salon on Main Street in Catskill.

Survivors include her former husband, Arthur Webster of Vero Beach, Fla.; three children, Stephen Webster of Ls Vegas, Nevada, Laurie Webster-Saft of Needham, Mass., and Lynn Smirensky of Delmar; brother, Oreste Vincent of Catskill; sister, Pearl McMahon of Catskill; granddaughter, Allison Lynn Saft, a student at Hartwick College in Oneonta; several nieces and nephews, as well as friends of Ohav Sholom and Catskill.

Hudson—Gloria L. Wark, formerly of Hudson, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield as the result of pulmonary disease.

Born April 1, 1928 in Hudson, she was the daughter of the late Josephine Schemerhorn and Joseph Wallach Sr.

For the past 11 years Mrs. Wark resident at the Fairview Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Great Barrington and most recently at Hillcrest Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Pittsfield.

Mrs. Wark graduated from Hudson High School.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Wark was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, the Rebekah Lodge, and Christ Church Episcopal in Hudson.

She enjoyed skiing and crocheting and was a longtime resident of Hudson and Catskill.

Survivors include her daughters, Lorri Hawver Couse of Freehold and Jo-Ann Hawver of Stamford, Conn., a brother, Joseph Wallach, Jr., of East Chatham; and four grandchildren, Adam Love of Claverack, Jenny Love of Freehold, Sarah Hand Meacham of Charlotteville, Va., and Todd Hand of Norwalk, Conn.

Services and interment will be held in the spring.

Coxsackie—Joseph P. DeMart, 88, of 9 Molly-Whaite Drive, Coxsackie, died Jan. 27, 2004 at Columbia-Green Long Term Care, Catskill.

Mr. DeMart was bone in North Tonawanda, N. Y., Aug. 25, 1915, and was the son of the late Angelo and Maria (Strange) DeMart.

During World War II, Mr. DeMart served with the United States Army.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a presser in the garment industry.

He was an avid football and baseball fan.

Mr. DeMart moved from Scarsdale, N. Y., 10 years ago becoming a Coxsackie resident.

Survivors include his wife, Sadie R. (Yetto) DeMart of Coxsackie, also two brothers, Dominic and Alfred DeMart and two sisters, Jennie Falzone and Vivian DeVegenzo all of North Tonawanda, as well as nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at he W. C. Brady’s Sons Inc., Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place 9 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Mansion Street, Coxsackie.

Entombment will follow in the family mausoleum in Hawthorne, N.Y.

Raymond W. Heido               World War II veteran

Largo, Fla.—Raymond W. Heido, 95, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004.

He was born in Union City, N.J. where he lived until 1946. He then moved to Palenville  with his wife and daughter. He resided there until 1973 when he moved to Largo, Fla.

He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the Palenville Fire Department, American Legion Post No. 1604 (of which he was a 55-year member) and retired from the Coxsackie Correctional Facility.

He was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church of Largo and an officer and board member of Town & Country Mobile Home Park, where he was active in bowling and shuffleboard.

Survivors include his wife Jessie, daughter Anna H. Parrott of Clearwater, Fla., and nephew Jeff Olsen of New Haven, Ind.

He was predeceased by his first wife Ann in 1974.

Cremation service was provided by the National Cremation Society of Largo, Fla.

Lou Ethel Brooks                       Sarah Philip Home resident

Catskill—Lou Ethel Brooks, 86, of Catskill died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at Long Term Care in Catskill where she had resided since Sept. 16, 2002.

She was born in Catskill May 15, 1917 to the late John C. and Karolyn Hunter Brooks.

Miss Brooks attended Irving School and graduated from Catskill High School in 1935 and was employed as domestic help in private homes. Upon her mother’s death in 1990 she became the resident of the Sarah Philip Home on New Street until it’s closing.

Survivors include her aunt, Florence Hunter of Catskill. She was predeceased by two uncles, Herbert and Ralph Hunter.

A committal service will be held in the spring at the village cemetery on Thompson Street where she will be interred in the Bulkey-Hunter family lot.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church on Woodward Avenue in Catskill.

Cairo—Linda J. Santos, 42, of Route 32, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

She was born May 5, 1961 in Albany, the daughter of Eileen (Blowers) Benoit of Cairo and the late Richard Benoit Sr.

Ms. Santos is survived by her long-time companion Bill Hughes of Cairo; son Kevin Benoit of Virginia; daughter Elisa Santiago of Cairo; siblings Richard Benoit Jr. of Albany, Michael and Eileen Benoit, both of Cairo; grandchildren Chastity, Kyra, Haven and Chamari, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2004 at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights in Catskill. The Rev. David Overton, Community Hospice chaplain, will be officiating. Private cremation will be performed at Park View Cemetery in Schenectady.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 30 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the service.

Ingnatius Feth                            Mechanic

West Coxsackie—Ignatius “Rex” Feth, 89, of Bethany Village died peacefully at his resident on Jan. 28, 2004.

Mr. Feth was born in Saskatchewan, Canada and together with his wife Anne emigrated to the United States in 1934. He became a U. S. Citizen and served in the U.S. Army in 1945.

For most of his working years, he was a mechanic and operator for various service stations.  He was the owner of the Rex’s Sunoco and Auto Sales in Coxsackie from 1962 to 1979.  He had also owned the Cedar Hill Garage in Selkirk. After retiring he worked as a night watchman for American Value.

He was a member of American Legion Post 166 in Coxsackie, Knights of Columbus and a communicant of the St. Mary’s Church in Coxsackie.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years Anne (Weixl) Feth; children Margaret  (Albert) Matter of Coxsackie, George  (Cynthia) Feth of Livonia, Mich. And Dorothy (Douglas) McCarty of Hannacroix, NY; grandchildren Douglas Matter of Earlton, NY, Brenda Spinner of Ravena and Jonathan Feth of Michigan; great-grandchildren Matthew Spinner and Lauren Matter. He is also survived by three nieces and grand-nieces in British Columbia, Canada and a niece in  Lake George, NY.

Rex is the last in a family of 12.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at St. Mary’s Church, Mansion Street in Coxsackie.  Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and may also call on Friday, Jan. 30 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Sopris Funeral Home, Inc., 11877 Route 9W in Coxsackie.  The American Legion will conduct services at 6:15 p.m.  Interment will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Coxsackie.

The family suggest memorial donations in Rex’s name be made to the Coxsackie Rescue Squad or St. Mary’s Church in Coxsackie. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

William J. Guinan               World War II veteran

Greenville—William J. Guinan, 83, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, with his beloved family by his side at the Albany Medical Center in Albany.

Born in New York City March 17, 1920, he was the son of the late William S. & Mary E. (Mullery) Guinan.

Mr. Guinan served his country in the US Army during World War II in the Pacific receiving the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and WW II Victory Medal.

In civilian life he was a regional manager of Rand McNally, a major map and atlas company, until his retirement.

He was past commander of his American Legion Post in Brooklyn and member of the K of C Boyd Council. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 50 years, Mary (O’Sullivan) Guinan of Greenville; daughter Donnamarie Maguire and her husband Bernard of Riverdale, NY; son, William M. Guinan and his fiancé Melissa Roggio of Greenville; sisters, Jeanne Hoffman and her husband Donald of Reading, Ma.; and Margaret Onyskin of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four grandchildren, Christopher Lenahan, Nicole Teriaca and Jennifer and Jacqueline Menendez; and great-grandson, Anthony Lenahan.

He was predeceased by his parents; daughter Rosemary and her husband Hector Menendez; and brother-in-law, Michael Onyskin.

Calling hours are Saturday 2 to 4  and 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville.

Funeral services will be Monday, 10:30 a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Church in Greenville at 11 a.m.

John H. Miner Sr.                    Former Code Enforcement Officer

West Coxsackie—John H. Miner St., 65, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

Born in Catskill, Mr. Miner was an Air Force veteran of a four-year tour. He was employed as an electrician at he SUNY Albany uptown campus and the downtown administration building, retiring in 1993.  He also served as the Town of New Baltimore Code Enforcement officer.  He was a member of the National Knife Collectors Association and served on the Collectors Board, and was a member of the Earlton Fish & Game Club and the lamplighters and Ridgerunner.

He was the devoted husband of Beverly Rose McCauley Miner; loving father of Denise Wilsey (David) of West Coxsackie, John H. Miner Jr. (Charlene DeForest) of Catskill and the later Debora Ann Miner; proud grandfather of Kyle, Ryan and Megan Wilsey; brother of Beatrice Reidhead of Amsterdam; also survived by cousins, nieces and nephews. 

Calling hours will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Caswell Funeral Home, 64 Martins Hill Road, (Route 143) Ravena.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Spring burial will be in Chestnut Lawn Cemetery in New Baltimore.

Elizabeth VanKempen                      Teacher’s aide

Selkirk—Elizabeth (Felci) VanKempen, 72, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2004 at St. Peter’s Hospice.

She was born in Staten Island on March 17, 1931, the daughter of the late Gaetano and Elizabeth (Cora) Felci.

A longtime area resident, she had worked as a teacher’s aide form 1977 to 1987 at the Bethlehem Central High School.

Mrs. VanKempen was a member of the Glenmont Community Church and had been a foster mother for many years.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband William S. VanKempen and six brothers.

She is survived by her children David W. VanKempen and his wife Cynthia of Ravena, Renee E. Geel and her husband Christian of Delmar; foster children Anthony Curtis of Cairo and Anthony Sellars of Maine; siblings Lillian Smith and Thomas Felci, both of Pensacola, Fla. and Ida Fernandez of Albany; grandchildren Ricciardi, Tina  and William VanKempen; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Relative and friends are invited to call on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2005 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Avenue in Delmar.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Elmwood Cemetery in Selkirk.

Mary Beatrice Ketigian                 Avid crafter

Tannersville—May Beatrice Ketigian, 83, of Tannersville died on Jan. 29, 2004 at the Columbia Memorial Hospice in Hudson.

Born March 1, 1920 in Milford, Mass., she was the daughter of  Axel and Anne Pearson.

Mrs. Ketigian had a summer house on Park Lane in Tannersville since 1950. She was a homemaker who enjoyed needlework and crafts and was a member of the Mountaintop Golden Agers.  She was also a member of the East Jewett United Methodist Church.

She married David Ketigian, who died in 1992, in New York City in 1943. They resided in Whitestone, Queens, and also had a winter home in St. Petersburg, Florida after David retired in 1971.

She was also predeceased by a twin brother, Fred Pearson, and a younger sister, Lily Wood. 

Surviving are two children, Linda M. Harutunian of Waldwick, NJ and Richard Ketigian of Tannersville; and two grandchildren, Anne Salka and Debra Diaz.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 1, at 9 a.m. at the East Jewett United Methodist Church, with Rev. Karen Monk officiating. A graveside service will be held Monday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. at he Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, NY.

Arrangements are under the direction of Aston-Basagic Funeral Home, 7742 Main St., Hunter.
