CLARISSA E. KETCHAM

KETCHAM---Clarissa E.  (Cris)  Ketcham, 89 died Friday, Jan 4, after a brief struggle with cancer, at her home in Greenville, while comforted by members of her extended family. Born May 4, 1912, in Brattleboro, Vt., she was the daughter of Leslie and Clarissa (Reed) Edwards. She graduated from Brattleboro public schools and later from Keene, NH. State Teachers College, with a BE in Home Economics. She taught for two years in Charleston, NH. She met her husband to be, Harry M. Ketcham on a blind date in 1937. They were married in 1940 and moved to Greenville, where they immersed themselves in the community and school system, raising a family of four children. They lived and worked together in Greenville until Harry's death in 1984. Cris was a member of the Greenville Presbyterian Church, she researched and prepared the documents necessary for enrolling the church in the national and state register for historical preservation and was later instrumental in the restoration of the church steeple/belfry. She served as a 4H club leader and was a temporary assistant 4H county agent, she was a member of the Concordia Circle and a substitute teacher at the school. One of Cris' passions was genealogy and as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, became organizing regent of the Johannes Hardenburgh chapter. This past summer, it was her pleasure to write and present an historical summary of the chapter at its 25th anniversary luncheon. She served both as national society DAR state vice-chairman of genealogical records and NYS Custodian. She was also active in a half dozen other lineage societies dating to on before the time of the revolutionary war. Over the years she helped many friends near and far to discover their "roots". An outdoor enthusiast, Cris was a life ling bird watcher and photographer, pursuing her hobbies on local family outings as well as cross the US and Canada. This was an occasional source of frustration for all the occupants of the family car as she would exclaim "Stop! What is that warbler?"  Or on other occasions, " Let me get a shot of that sunset!" Her talents as a photographer, developing, printing, enlarging, and tinting her own early black and white pictures, has left a photo-treasure of memories fro her children. As an avid skier she taught each of her children to ski in the style derived from her Vermont roots. Her first skiing lesson, was analogous to a lesson in living ones life, although a bit of a shook to a five year old. It went like this: first you must learn to fall safely, with your skiis clear so you don't get hurt. And she gave the child a gentle shove, landing him on his backside in the snow pack.  Next, you will need to get up by yourself. For she was not about to spend her day hoisting her charges back to their feet. "And, finally, before you can experience the thrill on the downhill ride, you need to learn to climb to the top. " So the "side-step" and the "herringbone" were the last to be taught. By then that well-earned ride was "a piece of cake". Cris survived by her elder sister, Dorothy Robbins of Brattleboro, Vt., and her four children: Clairrsa Smart of Hopewell Junction, NY.; Stewart Ketcham of Salt Lake City, Utah; Harry Ketcham of Durham; also surviving are thirteen grandchildren: Justin and Ruby Hoover, children of Stewart, Hillary Iannuccilli, Huntly Ketcham, Tracey Kruce, Lisa Tilley, Casandra Westlake, Heidi Low, Holly Kjar, Krista Ketcham and Edward Ketcham, children of Harry. There are nine great-grandchildren. And finally she is survived by her orange tiger cat "Midas", who was her daily companion in recent years. There will be no public calling hours. There will be a memorial service held in the former Greenville Presbyterian Church (between the Greenville Public Library and the Greenville Elementary School) on Sunday, January 20, at 2 pm. Contributions in her memory may be made to either the community hospice of Columbia/Greene, 47 Liberty St., Catskill, NY, 12414 or the Greenville Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 332, Greenville, NY 12083. Arrangement by the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898, State Route 81, Greenville.
