Carpenter and landscaper
Catskill—Harold W. Bersch, 30-years-old, of Route 385, Catskill, died Wednesday in Catskill. He was born in Hudson on March 9, 1972, the son of Harold Jr. and Joan (Ferris) Bersch.
Mr. Bersch was a self-employed carpenter and landscaper in Catskill and a member of the American Legion Post #184 in Hudson.
Besides his parents, he is survived by five children, Shawna, Traylen, Shawn, Jason and Harold Bersch IV, all of Catskill; three brothers, James Begraph of Catskill, Joseph Bersch of Philmont and Donald Bersch of Pennsylvania; and one sister, Joann Forshaw of Catskill. He was predeceased by his daughter, Shenia Bersch.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Route 9, Valatie, with the service conducted by Rev. Robert Sorozan. Interment will be in Chatham Center Cemetery in the spring. Friends may call Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Ricardo A. Street
Vietnam veteran
Catskill—Ricardo A. “Ric” Street, 52, of 138 Water Street in Catskill died suddenly Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson from injuries sustained in an accident fall at home.
He was born Feb. 23, 1950 in New Rochelle, NY, the son of the late Richard and Ida (Owens) Street.
Ricci was a graduate of Catskill High School, class of 1968. He served in the United States Navy and was a veteran of the Vietnam conflict.
Mr. Street was an employee of the New York State Thruway Authority and recently was awarded for 25 years of service. He spent much of his free time with his family and friends or engaging in his favorite hobby of fishing. Ric was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Wilkerson in 1974.
Mr. Street is survived by his wife, Georgiana (Bogardus) Street of Catskill; daughters Celisia Street of Niskayuna, Fabienne Street of Catskill and Audra Street of Catskill; sisters Henrietta Overby of Catskill and Joyce French of Albany; brother Robert Wilkerson of Waterford; mother-in-law Jean Bogardus of Catskill; sister-in-laws Janet Buskirk of Catskill and Linda Green of Catskill; brother-in-law Michael Bogardus of Catskill; best friend Shepard Ford of Catskill; niece Ida “Bunny” Johnson of Catskill; as well as many nieces and nephews and close friends.
Memorial services will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003 at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill, Spring interment will be in Catskill Rural Cemetery.

Catskill—Mrs. Theo H. Rider, 94, went to her heavenly home on Friday, Jan. 31, 2003.
She was born at New Street, Catskill on May 4, 1908, the daughter of the late Adelaide (Merwin) and Fred Woolheiser.
Theo was predeceased by her husband, John Rider, in 1993. Together, they had owned and operated Woolheisers Grocery on West Bridge Street in Catskill. Mrs. Rider was a special lady who dearly loved her home and had resided there alone for the past 10 years. She was also predeceased by a sister, Ivy; brothers Fred Jr., Merwin, Roy and Calvin.
Mrs. Rider is survived by her dear friends, Jamie Wilms, Carol Doney, Irene Story, and her namesake Theo Peloke and husband, Maynard H. Peloke of Catskill.
A graveside ceremony is planned for 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2003 at he town of Catskill Ceremony. The Rev. David Overton, Community Hospice Chaplain and Pastor of the Mitchell Hollow Mission Church will be officiating.
Funeral services are under the direction of Traver & McCurry Funeral Home in Catskill.

Katherine Garrison
Lovingly known as Granny
Palenville—After a full and active life, Katherine ‘Kitty’ Garrison, 89 years young of Main Street, Palenville, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, surrounded by her family.
She was born March 28, 1913 in Rosendale, N.Y., daughter of the late Valentine and Helena Hornung.
She was a Palenville resident all of her adult life and retired form the Palenville Post Office.
She held numerous offices as a charter member of the Palenville Fire Department Auxiliary, charter member of the Greene County Ladies Auxiliary, Rip Van Winkle Senior Citizens’ Club, Catskill Senior Fellowship, Wednesday Afternoon Craft and Card Club and Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church.
Kitty, who lived in the center of town, was the center of so many lives. All who knew her loved her, which was apparent by the constant flow of visitors to her ever open home.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 11 a.m. at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill with the Rev. Thomas Carney, pastor of the Greenville Methodist Church officiating.
Interment will be held in the Palenville Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Monday from 3 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palenville Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary or the Simpson Memorial United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two sons; Ronald and Chester, both of Palenville; two daughters-in-law: Barbara and Patricia Garrison; grandchildren: Darryl and Karen Garrison of Trumbull, Conn., Tracy and Michael Spitz of Palenville, Blake Garrison of Palenville, Marc and Natalie Garrison of Kinderhook, Shannon Garrison of Albany; seven great-grandchildren: Christopher, Cheryl and Evan Spitz and Savannah, Dylan, Tyler and Sierra Garrison, niece, Arlene Tompkins and great-niece, Karen Ormerod, both of Palenville; and an extended loving family and close, dear friends too numerous to name.
She was predeceased by her husband, Claude A. Garrison on Nov. 9, 1992, a sister Margaret Albert, and a brother, Valentine Hornung Jr.

Charlie B. (Mac) McRoberts
20-year Greene County legislator
Albany—Charlie B. (Mac) McRoberts, 76, of East Windham, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at St. Pete’s Hospital in Albany.
Born on July 25, 1926 in Elizaville, Ky., he was the son of the later Omar and Myrtle Hamilton McRoberts. He married Louise Kading on May 11, 1947; they were married 55 years. Mr. and Mrs. McRoberts came to East Windham where they lived since 1963. He is also survived by his daughter Cheryl and her husband Robert Cupo of Brea, Ohio, his son Chuck McRoberts and his wife Lorraine of Teaneck, N. J., his grandchildren Bob and Jon Cupo, and Dylan McRoberts, his surrogate grandchildren Taylor and Kathleen Brandt, two brothers Guy McRoberts of Winchester, Ohio and Robert McRoberts, also of Winchester. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Mr. McRoberts was predeceased by brothers and sisters Ralph McRoberts, Frieda McRoberts, Jean Denton and Bernie Archdeacon.
He was active in his community. A member of the Windham-Hensonville United Methodist Church; Mr. McRoberts was a funeral director and manager of Decker Funeral Home until his retirement. He also was an active member of the Greene County Legislature, serving 20 years. He served in the military during World War II, he was a member of the Masonic Order and a member and past commander of the VFW.
He was Honorary Kentucky Colonel and manager of Camp Oh Neh Tah. He was a member of the Greene County Soil and Water Committee and a member of the Batavia Kill Watershed. He was a member of the Red Cross, a member of the Windham Hose Company, a member of the Meals on Wheels Program, and a past member of the Windham Republican Committee.
The Windham Fire Company will meet at the Decker Funeral Home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Masonic services will be held Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. VFW services will be held Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Windham-Hensonville Unite Methodist Church, Main Street, Windham, N. Y. 12496.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham.
Funeral service will be held at the Windham-Hensonville United Methodist Church, Windham on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Johnson officiating.

Catskill—Victor Notarnicola, 79, of 19 Thompson St., Catskill, died suddenly Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson. He was born June 20, 1923 in Catskill, the son of the late Donato and Margaret (Carnangi) Notarnicola.
Mr. Notarnicola was an employee of Lehigh Cement Company prior to his retirement. He was predeceased by a daughter, Gail Marie Notarnicola and two brothers, Anthony and Albert Notarnicola.
Mr. Notarnicola is survived by his wife, Edna (Kutscher) Notarnicola of Catskill; three son, Michael V. Notarnicola and wife Beverly of Colorado Springs, Colo., Mark A. Notarnicola and wife Joyce of Cairo, and Matthew Notarnicola of Catskill; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Notarnicola and Theresa Notarnicola, both of Cairo, and Jill Villa of Colorado Springs; and two great grandchildren, Peter and James Villa of Colorado Springs.

Hudson—Stephen Novak, 97, died Jan. 31, 2003, at the Parkway Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Stuart, Fla.
A native of Hungary, he lived in Hudson for more than 70 years and lived in Stuart, Fla., for the last three years.
He retired from the International Business Machines Corporation in Kingston. Survivors include a daughter, Jean Murphy of Port Washington; a son, Stephen J. Novak and wife Patricia of Jensen Beach, Fla.; three sisters; May Maurer of South River, N.J., Elizabeth Milyo of LaBelle, Fla., and Irene Zuzek of Dunedin, Fla.; a brother John Novak of Dunedin, Fla., six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangement are under the direction of the
Valenti and Richards Funeral Home, 700 Town Hall Drive, Hudson.
Interment will take place in the family plot of the Cedar Park Cemetery,

Cairo—Charles A. Carlson, 83, of Warren Stein Road, South Cairo, died Feb. 3, 2003, at his home after a long illness.
He was born in New York City on Jan. 13, 1920, and was the son of the later Emil and Mary (Make) Carlson.
Private graveside services will take place Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003 in the family plot of the Catskill Rural Cemetery. He was predeceased by his wife Betty.
Prior to his retirement, he was a machinist for the Becker Electronics of East Durham. He had been an area resident since 1965. He is survived by a nephew, Richard Sloat and his wife Carol Sloat of South Cairo.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Richards Funeral Home, 383 Bross St., Cairo.

Monroe Township, N. J.—Ada Y. Schilansky, 83, died at her home in Monroe Township, N.J., on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, surrounded by her loving husband, children and grandchildren.
She was born in Brooklyn on Oct. 28, 1919, the daughter of the late Max and Frances Friedman. Originally a resident of Brooklyn, she moved to Far Rockaway in 1968, and to Monroe Township in 1996. Until her retirement in 1986, she was employed as an executive assistant to both the Chief Librarian and the Dean of Baruch College, City University of New York.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Joseph, of Monroe Township; her son, Dr. Mark Schilansky and daughter-in-law Carol Schilansky of Catskill; her daughter, Barbara Bergmann and son-in-law Arthur Bergmann of East Brunswick, N. J.; granddaughters Heather, Jennifer and Liza Schilansky of Catskill, Amanda Genge and her husband Steve of Hoboken, N. J., and Meredith Bergmann of Los Angeles; and many loving nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Morris Friendman and her sister Murial Feinman.
Funeral services were held in New Brunswick, N. J., on Feb. 4, 2003.

Catskill—Ann Colgan, 91, of Catskill, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson. She was born Oct. 8, 1911 in Newark, N.J., the daughter of the late Joseph and Beatrice (Dujuski) Castagnino.
Mrs. Colgan was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church of Catskill. She was a member of the Secular Third Order of St. Francis, Catskill Senior Fellowship, Rip Van Winkle Club and VFW Post 770 Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Colgan was a long-time volunteer for the Greene County Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home and the Eden Park Health Care Facility.
Mrs. Colgan was predeceased by her husband Ralph R. Colgan on April 13, 1982. She was predeceased by two sisters, Lorraine Furyck and Helen Tricarico, and a brother John Castagnino.
Mrs. Colgan is survived by three sisters, Josephine Arno of Essex, Dorothy DeLaBaptiste of Florida and Marion Carluccio of Norristown, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Agnes Borchick of Brooklyn; and many nieces and nephews.

Coxsackie—Julia (Marty) Wanek, 75, died Feb. 4, 2003, surrounded by her family and friends after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Albany on Oct. 15, 1927 and was the daughter of the late Martin and Julia Cary Kelly.
Mrs. Wanek graduate from Coxsackie-Athens High School in
1945 and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology from Albany
College of Pharmacy in 1949. She was employed as a medical technologist with
Memorial Hospital of Greene County until her retirement in 1991. She was a
communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and a member of The Altar
Rosary Society.
She was married to James C. Wanek for 22 years until his death in 1975. Se is survived by her children, Jeffrey of Coxsackie, Gregory and his wife Christine of Athens, Beth and her fiancé LeRoy Russell of Coxsackie, Holly and her fiancé Peter Young of Round Top, Tracy Moon and her husband Benton (Buck) of St. Cloud Bay, Fla., and her aunt Jeanne Cary of Coxsackie. Her grandchildren Emily Horn, Julia and Skyler Wanek, Savanna Moon, several nieces and nephews and many dear friends also survive her.
Friends and relatives are invited to pay their respects at The W. C. Brady’s Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie, on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003 at St. Mary’s R. C. Church, Coxsackie. The Rev. Fr. John Moyna will be the celebrant.
Interment will take place when the weather permits in the family plot of St. Mary’s Cemetery, Coxsackie. Contributions in Mr. Wanek’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society, The Coxsackie Rescue Squad or to the Columbia-Greene Humane Society.

Greenville—Elaine G. Williams, 74, of Rensselaerville, died Feb. 6, 2003 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany. She was born in Green Island on June 25, 1927, daughter of the late John and Laurian (Archambeault) Gwinn. Mrs. Williams was a clerk at the NYS Department of Tax until her retirement. She enjoyed gardening and bird watching. She was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church and her smiling face will be missed by those who knew her at the Saturday 4 p.m. Mass. She was involved with the young girls in the CYO at the church. She was the beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother devoted to her family.
Surviving are her beloved husband Horace E. Williams of Rensselaerville, her two sons Thomas E. Williams and his wife Rebecca A. of Saginaw, Mich., and Charles R. Williams and his wife Leslie of Palm Coast, Fla.; a daughter Judith Dibbell and her husband Stephen of West Shokan; five sisters, Theresa Foster and Lorraine Harris, both of Watervilet, Joan Quell and Elizabeth Diehl both of Wynantskill and Lourdes William of Snyders Lake; a brother Kenneth Gwinn of Wynantskill; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be from the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville, 9:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Church at 10 a.m. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.
Interment will follow in the Saratoga National Cemetery at a later date.

Ithaca—Alice V. Freeman, age 86 years, died unexpectedly after a short illness in Ithaca on Feb. 5, 2003.
She was a longtime Catskill resident and taught first then second grade at Irving School for 30 years.
She is survived by her sister, Ruth Hovanec and brother, Lawrence Van De Bogart of Danby, Kenneth of Hampton, Va., and grandsons Bill and Charles.
Services will be held at Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall, 1201 Danby Road, Danby, N. Y. on Feb. 15 at 3 p.m.

David Jacobs
Former Town Justice
Hunter—David Jacobs, 88, of Hunter passed away Feb. 6, 2003 at his residence.
He was born July 13, 1914, to Leo and Mabel Davis Jacobs
in New York City.
He was an electric contractor and owner of Clove
Corporation.
Jacobs served his community with distinction as Hunter Town Justice for over 33 years, during which he held the position of president for the New York State Magistrates Association, and he applied his passion for education by serving on the Hunter-Tannersville Board of Education for 18 years.
He served on that board as president for 15 years and on
the Columbia Greene College Board of Trustees for 9 years, serving as its
chairman for four. He also served
on the local BOCES board for 10 years.
Jacobs’ community spirit drove him to improve medical services through his efforts as a con-founder of the Mountain Top Medical Center. He also participated as member and past-president of the Hunter Fire Co. and contributed time and energy to local organization such as the Mason, Lions Club and Shriners.
Jacob started the Hunter Day Cam, the Little League, and worked to improve the library by moving it to its present location.
He is survived by his wife, Sippie Moskowitz Jacobs of Hunter, two brothers, Melvin Jacobs of Colorado and Harold Jacobs of Mass. Many niece, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be Sunday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. at the Aston-Basagic Funeral Home on Main Street in Hunter. Interment will follow in the Kilawche Israel Cemetery in South Jewett. Friends and relatives may call on Saturday evening, Feb. 8 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Masonic service at 6:30 p.m.
Donations may be made to the Tannersville Rescue Squad or the Hunter Library in his memory.

Charles E. Schilling
World War II Veteran
Coxsackie—Charles E. Schilling, 85, of Lafayette Avenue in Coxsackie and formerly of Market Street in Saugerties, died Saturday, Feb. 8, in the Ten Broeck Commons Nursing Home in Lake Katrine.
Born Oct. 3, 1917, in Woodhaven, NY, he was the son of the late Charles and Louise Cortout Schilling.
He was a veteran of World War II; he served in the U. S. Navy. He was a former member of the National Guard and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was employed for over 48 years as a senior field auditor for the Equitable Life Insurance Company in New York City before he retired in 1980.
He was a resident of Florida for a few years where he performed volunteer work for the Missing Children of Seminole County, Florida.
Surviving are his wife, with whom he recently celebrated a 40th wedding anniversary; a son, Steven Schilling of Long Island; seven daughters, Barbara Thompson of Las Vega, NV. Carol Zauner of Long Island, Debbie Zetterlund of Coxsackie; Colleen Kollar of Lake Mary, Fla. Jeanie Wallick of Lake Mary, Fla., Nancy Berzal of Saugerties, and Lisa Hummill of Saugerties; 21 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home at the corner of John and Lafayette Streets in Saugerties, with the Rev. Richard Rockwood, pastor of Saugerties Reformed Church, officiating.
Friends will be received Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home in Saugerties.
Interment in the spring will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Coxsackie.

Athens—Dorothy A. Donath, 61, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson after a long illness.
She was born May 15, 1941 in Hudson, daughter of the later John and Michaeline (Zelsky) Woznieski.
Mrs. Donath had been an area resident of Green County since 1985. At the time of her death, she resided at 5 N. Church St., in the village of Athens.
Prior to her illness she was employed by the Columbia-Greene Long Term Care of Catskill.
She was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church, Athens, and was active in the Greene County arts.
Survivors include her husband Edward Donath of Athens; two sons, Peter Curcio of Mt. Vernon, Ohio and John Curcio of Burlington, N. C., stepdaughters Sunnie Donath of Saxtons River, Vt., Erin DeBruyn of Ashville, N. C. and Jamie Hill of Danbury, Conn.; a brother, Michael Woznieski of Stottville; two sisters, Christine Dorsch of Philmont and Suzanne Kennedy of Boca Raton, Fla., two grandchildren, Benjamin and Alexander Curcio; and step-grandchild Miles DeBruyn.
Cremation took place at the convenience of the family.
Funeral services were under the direction of the Richards

Windham—Paul Hagedorn, 94, of Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville, N.Y., died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003.
Born on July 25, 1908 in Hamburg, Germany, he was the son of the late Paul Johann Otto Hagedorn and the late Margareta (Krohn) Hagedorn.
Mr. Hagedorn was a delicatessen owner for several years in Irvington, N. J. Then he worked for the A & P as a deli manager.
He was an avid gardener who loved music and was a self-taught artist. He always had a smile for everyone.
Mr. Hagedorn lived in Mendham, N. J. for 42 years. He was an honorary member of the Mendham Borough Fire Department and was a Mendham Borough Police Department Cross Walk Guard for 11 years.
He moved to West Kill in 1995.
He was a mason belonging to the Madison Lodge No. 93 F & A.M. in Madison, N.J.
Survivors include his daughter Christine Dwon and husband Larry, grandsons, Paul and Matthew of West Kill, a sister, Betty Luedersen of Hamburg, Germany and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hagedorn was predeceased by his wife Christine (Grubel) Hagedorn on Dec. 28, 1981 and a brother, Waldemar Luedersen.

Jewett—Donald Osborn Thompson, 82, of Jewett, died Feb. 7, 2003.
The son of Charles and Nellie (Osborn) Thompson, he was born in Jewett on Feb. 14, 1921.
Mr. Thompson graduated from Windham-Ashland-Jewett Central School in 1938.
He served in the 99th Infantry Division during World War II in the European Theater, saw action at the Battle of the Bulge, and received a Certificate of Merit.
After the war he ran his own construction contracting company for a number of years, then drove bus for Hunter-Tannersville Central School from 1967 until 1984 when he retired.
He was a member of the Jewett Presbyterian Church, where he served as Trustee and well as Elder and Clerk of Session. He was a former Trustee of the Pleasant Valley Cemetery Board.
Mr. Thompson was a member of the Jewett Fire Department, at various times holding the offices of Secretary, Treasurer and President. He was also involved in the Jewett Rescue Squad, where he served as Treasurer.
He loved antiquing, collecting tools, crockery, furniture, and paintings. He was also an avid reader and gardener. He is featured in the book “Portraits of Pride” (1995), a collection of interviews of mountaintop residents.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Clara (Goslee); three daughters, Eileen and husband Rodney Mulford of Oneonta, N. Y., Kathryn and husband William Bosley of Chesapeak, VA., Donna and husband Jonathan Donald of Sleepy Hollow, N. Y., grandchildren Rodney Mulford Jr., Jennifer Oakley, and Matthew Mulford, Jacob and Gabriel Bosley, and four great-grandchildren. He was the uncle of Larry, Mark and Kevin Thompson , Colleen Mullaly and Sharon Potter.
Mr. Thompson was predeceased by his brother Charles Aubrey Thompson, his sister, Clare Mullaly, and two nephews, Jeffrey and Ronald Thompson.
Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. at the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Jewett Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dianna Smith officiating.
Interment will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in the spring. Memorial gifts may be given to the Jewett Presbyterian Church.

Prattsville—Henry P. Traulsen, 89, formerly of Prattsville, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003.
Born on March 7, 1913 in Staten Island, he was the son of the late Henry F. and the late Anna Hansche Traulsen.
Mr. Taulsen moved to Prattsville in 1951 and took up farming prior to buying the Prattsville Hardware Store in 1965 until his retirement in 1975 when he moved to Schenectady.
Survivors include Henry F. Sr. and wife Wendy of Cartlandt Manor, Joan Proadman and husband William of Schoharie; Claudia Decker of Ontario, Calif., Jessie Garringer and husband Kent of Greene, Terry Robiliard and husband Eugene R. of Schenectady; 16 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild.
Mr. Traulesen was predeceased by his wife, Jessie (Myer) Traulsen, and a son, Martin Traulsen.
Cremation took place at Vale Crematory, Schenectady. A spring interment will take place in the Fairlawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Catskill—Raymond H. Cross Sr., 90, of Catskill, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003 at Columbia Greene Long Term Care in Catskill. He was born Feb. 9, 1913 in New London, Conn., the son of the late Horace and Laura Cross.
Mr. Cross was employed on Main Street, Catskill for more than 50 years at various retail stores including Oren’s Furniture, Lerner’s Department Store, Lemmolman’s Hardware Store and in retirement as an attendant at Catskill Savings Bank Parking Lot. Mr. Cross was married for more then 60 years to his wife Anita Mae (Brandow) Cross, who predeceased him on March 13, 1997.
Mr. Cross is survived by two sons, Raymond H. Cross Jr., and wife Sharon of Catskill and Wilbur J. Cross and wife Norma of Catskill; a daughter Joan Schepp and husband Stanley of Purling; five grand children, Deborah Lane of Glenmont, Kevin J. Cross of Salem, Daryl H. Cairo—Lawrence J. Galvin, 76, of Roosevelt Avenue, Acra, died Feb. 9, 2003 at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson after a long illness.
He was born in the Bronx on Sept. 5, 1926, and was the son of the late Edward and Margaret (McAndrews) Galvin. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003 at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, Cairo, with the Rev. Fr. J. Nunan, pastor, as the celebrant. Private cremation will follow at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands.
Mr. Galvin had been an area resident for the last 19 years. During World War II, he served his country in the U. S. Army. He was also a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo. Prior to his retirement, he was an agent for the Equitable Life Insurance Company of Long Island.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janet K. (Boyden) Galvin of Acra; two sons, Christopher Galvin of Cairo and Timothy Galvin of Tampa, Fla., four daughters, Michele White of Tampa, Fla., Kathleen Galvin of Cairo, Suzanne Mastrosimone of Margate, Fla., and Nancy Galvin of Cairo.

Catskill—Loraine M. Joehl, 55, of Leeds-Athens Road, Leeds, died suddenly Thursday, Feb. 6,2003, in Knightstown, Ind., from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
Born Oct. 4, 1947, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Anastasia (Lebid) Martin.
Ms. Joehl owned and operated the Indian Ridge Campsites in Leeds since 1984. She was a member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cairo, the Campground owners of New York, and was a volunteer at God’s Store House in Catskill.
Survivors include three children, Dawn Anderson of Jacksonville, Fla., Valerie Ramm of Wading River, N.Y., and James Benson of North Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother, Dennis Martin of Washington state; and seven grandchildren, Carissa, Morgan, Brianna, Mitchel, Sammy Jo, Danielle and Jack.

Windham—Mary Dwon, 94, of West Kill, died on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003 at Kingston Hospital in Kingston.
Born on Oct. 18, 1908 in Turek, Poland, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and the late Leona Skala. Mrs. Dwon was married to Lawrence Dwon, whom she married on Feb. 14, 1941. They moved to West Kill from Columbia, Ohio on Oct. 18, 1996.
She is survived by her husband and two sons, Lawrence A. Dwon of West Kill and Roger Dzwonczyk of Columbus, Ohio. She is also survived by a brother, Dr. Raymond Skala of New Jersey and sisters Helen McKinley of South Carolina and Sabina Aimone of George and five grandchildren.
Mrs. Dwon was a secretary and statistical typist for American Gas Electric in New York City. She was a violinist in New Jersey and the Providence, R. I., Symphony Orchestra.
Cremation took place at Wiltwyck Rural Crematory in Kingston. Spring interment will take place in the West Kill Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Decker Funeral Home, 134, Main St., Windham.

She had been a resident of The Pavilion in Catskill for the last 10 years. Formerly she resided on Railroad Avenue in Cairo.
She was born on May 13, 1913, in Brooklyn, and was the daughter of the late James and Ella Wynn.
Mrs. Kearns had been an area resident of Cairo since 1963 and also had been a communicant of The Sacred Heart Church of Cairo. Survivors include a sister, Evelyn Durand of The Pavilion in Catskill; and several friends including Ruth Herron, Margaret Simpkins and Cathy Jeune, all of Cairo.
Mrs. Kearns was predeceased by her husband, John Kearns in September 1986, and by her son, John, many years ago.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Richards Funeral Home, 383 Bross St., Cairo.
Funeral services will take place 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home the same day, with the Rev. Fr. J. Nunan, pastor of the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo, officiating.

Joe served in the U. S. Coast Guard and Merchant Marines during World War II.
He was employed as an equipment operator with Colarusso Construction until retiring.

Born July 27, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Avra Marvel Poulos and the widow of Harold J. Bellens.
A lifetime resident and native of Catskill, Mrs. Bellens moved to Clifton Park two years ago to be close to her daughter Susan Finlayson. She graduated from the Catskill High School and Mildred Elley Business School in Albany. She was employed as a secretary at Catskill Savings Bank and Greene County Head Start. She was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed the holidays spent with her family, friends and pets. Her family will deeply miss her.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Rafael (Barbara) Bellen-Picon of Westbury and Mrs. David (Susan) Finlayson of Waterford; granddaughter, Kyula Finlayson of Waterford; sister-in-law, Ruth Cimorelli of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a niece Patti Jane Peet of Tampa, Fla.; and two grandnieces, Michelle and Susan.
The family would like to invite her dearest friends to celebrate in remembering her life.

During his employment, he was a computer programmer for City Bank in Albany. He received a Bachelors degree in computer programming.
He is survived by his sister Marianna Schroeder of Brooklyn and many local friends.

Red Hook—John I. Jimenez, 79, of Red Hood, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003 at his home a former resident of Catskill, he had lived in Red Hook for 37 years.
Born in San Jose, Calif., on April 5, 1923, he was the son of Manuel and Hermenia Tejeda Jimenez. He graduated in 1952 from the University of New Mexico with a degree in civil engineering.
A construction engineer, he owned and operated ZEMEN Inc., a construction engineering firm in Catskill, up until his death.
Mr. Jimenez was a member of the Associated General Contractors of America, New York State Chapter, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Catskill Golf Club.
A veteran of the U. S. Army, John served during World War II and landed at Normandy Beach with the Allied Forces on D-Day. He was a member of the Red Hook Post No. 7765 VFW.
On Feb. 3, 1947 at Croton-On-Hudson, he married Stanyua Schwarzkopf. Mrs. Jimenez survives at home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Joya and Michael De Stefano of Falls Church, Va., Brie Gallagher-Kurtz an Marvin Kurtz of Rhinebeck and Yona J. Boccino of East Hills; son John M. Jimenez of Cairo; brothers Daniel A. of Monroe Township, N. J.; and Fernando Jimenez of McLean Va.; sister Dolores Gleaton of Hudson; and grandchildren Adam Berardi, Dylan, Shannon and Seth Gallagher, Jessica, Jenna and John I. Jimenez, and Zachary Bocchino. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Three brothers predeceased him: Michael A., James M., and Joseph A. Jimenez.
There will be no calling hours.
Funeral serviced and cremation will be private.

He was born Feb. 14, 1914 in Newtate, Florence Court, County Fermanagh, Ireland, the son of the late Hugh and Catherine (Maginness) McKenna.
He was an employee of New York Telephone in New York City for over 33 years prior to his retirement. Formerly of the Bronx, Maurice has been a Leeds resident since 1980.
Mr. McKenna was communicant and usher at St. Bridget’s Church in Leeds. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America; Holy Name Society and fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Council No. 572.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Patrick McKenna and Thomas McKenna; and two sisters, Jane Curran and Kitty Goodfellow.
Mr. McKenna is the beloved husband of Bridget Mannix (Walls) McKenna of Leeds, and he is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Shine of New Hampton and May (Maureen) Nolan of Cornwall-on-Hudson; two sons, Maurice J. McKenna of Yonkers and Kevin P. McKenna of Mohegan Lake; brother Hugh McKenna of Newtate, Ireland; sister Rose Coughlin of the Bronx; 10 grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Kattskill Bay—Fred L. Saxe, 86, of Pilot Knob Road died peacefully, Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at his home under the loving care of his family and hospice nurses. He was born in Catskill. After being drafted into the Army and completing Office Candidate School, he married his “city” girl Eleanore who predeceased him Feb. 21, 2001. He spent two years at the U. S. Army Base Shop School in Maryland in charge of teaching, training, service and operations of the tank, engine and wheel vehicle department. He prepared and sent the 303rd Ordnance Base Battalion to Egypt. He introduced the new tank, M24, to the European theater 1st and 9th Armies. Introduced the M40 Gun Motor carriage (155GPF) on medium tan chassis to units in the Pacific. After retiring in 1954 as a Major, he joined General Motors Main Branch in Detroit. After 20 years he retired as Service Representative and Zone Service Manager. For the next 25 years he was a car salesman in Minneapolis and retired as a Lifetime Member of the Cadillac Crest Club.
Mr. Saxe and his wife Eleanore were devoted parents raising their five children. After caring for Eleanore for nine years and after her passing, he bought a home in Florida, took up golf and studied and received his Master Engineers license, working two summer seasons on the Morgan at the Sagamore. He was a devoted family man, a true gentlemen and lover of life. He loved people and conversed with all from many walks of life.
He is predeceased by his wife, Eleanore, of 40 years and his two sons, Dick and Fred Saxe, He is survived by his sister Edith Minerley of Athens; and three daughters, Mary Ann Thompson of Madison Lake, Minn., and her husband Arlo and two children Chris and Kate, Kelly Smith of Katskill Bay and her husband Harold, and Annie Christopherson, of Titusville, Fla., and her husband Lenny.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Carleton Funeral Home Inc., 68 Main St., Hudson Falls. Following the visitation there will be a gathering of friends at the Adirondack Bar & Grill, corner of 149 and Ridge Road.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, at the Chapel of Our Lady of Assumption on Ridge Road.
Mr. Saxe and family will then fly home to Minnesota for services at the Washbun-McReavy Edina Chapel, West 50th and Highway 100, Edina, Minn. Interment will follow at the family site in Gethsemane Catholic Cemetery, New Hope. Minn.

Born in Seward on Oct. 3, 1925, he was the son of the late Clifford L. and Rosanna (Slater) Chase Sr.
Mr. Chase was the former superintendent of highways for the Town of Rensselaerville, retiring in 1987. He also operated Chase’s Repair Shop at his home and was an excellent auto mechanic as well as a former dairy farmer.
He was a member of the Medusa Volunteer Fire Co., the Democratic Social Club and the New York State and Albany County Superintendent of Highways Association.
He was predeceased by his wife Bernice in 1994, a son Tommie Chase and a great-grandson Clifford Chase V.
Surviving are daughters Wanda Clickman and her husband Charles, Linda Snyder and her husband Donald Snyder Jr., and Melony Shaver and her husband Doyle; sons Clifford L. Chase III and his wife Janice, Richard Chase and his wife Carol, Gary J. (Jon) Chase and his wife Joyce, Mark Chase and his wife Carol Ann, and Galen Chase and his wife Rachel; as well as 22 grand children and 20 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers and sisters, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Rout 81 in Greenville. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 21, form 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Spring interment will be in the Medusa Cemetery. Those who desire may contribute in his memory to the Town of Rensselaerville Ambulance Fund or to the Medusa Volunteer Fire Co.

New York—Helen Mary Gay, 89, died at the Kateri Residence in Manhattan on Feb. 20, 2003 after a brief illness.
Born in Coxsackie on Jan. 24, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mae McCallan Gay.
Miss Gay graduated from Coxsackie High school and after leaving Climax, she went to New York City to work on airplane pistons during World War II. In 1944, after two years of college, she started teaching at St. Michael’s Academy in Manhattan. She continued her education and received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at St. John’s University.
Miss Gay retired in June of 1982 but remained active at St. Michael’s, handling graduate’s transcripts. She was moderator for the National Honor Society and the CCD Religious Classes. She was a member of St. Michael’s parish, the Federation of Catholic Teachers Union Local #153, The Legion of Mary, The Blue Army, and many other volunteer activities.
Miss Gay was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Eileen Smith and Alice Ringwald, brother Donald Gay, and her niece Marilyn Ringwald. She is survived by her nieces and nephews: Dianne Ringwald, Claudia Labuda, Edward Smith, Jr., Terry Smith, Stephen Smith, Richard Smith, Donald Gay, Jr., Robert Gay, Loretta Gay, Janet Mateer, Dolores Gay and Joan Van Wormer. She is also survived by many cousins. She is godmother to John Sullivan and Claudia Ringwald Labuda.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. in St. Michael’s Parish, 424 West 34th Street, New York. Relative and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Coxsackie, in the spring. There are no calling hours.

Catskill—Sarah C. “Sally” Ormerod, 86, a retired Registered Nurse from Catskill died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003 at Columbia Greene Long Term Care after a long illness.
Born at Mount Vernon on June 10, 1916, the daughter of William and Ellen Robb Craig, Mrs. Ormerod graduated from Edison Technical High School in 1935 and Kingston School of Nursing in 1940. She was employed as Nigh Supervisor at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill for over 16 years, retiring in 1995.
Sally was a life member of Ladies Auxiliary Hose #1, Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church, and Catskill Presbyterian Church until its closing. She was a member of N. Y. S. Nurses Association District #11 of Kingston, N. Y. S. Nurses Association of Catskill, Catskill Chapter 293 Order of Eastern Star, and the Phyllis Mauri Nursing Scholarship Committee.
She was married to Jack H. Ormerod, Jr., who predeceased her on Aug. 7, 1977. Surviving are sons William J. Ormerod, Sr. and wife Karen of Palenville and Paul D. Ormerod and wife Sue of Catskill; grandchildren William J. Ormerod, Jr. of Fairfax, Vt., Scott M. Ormerod of Valchin, Kellie Ann Ormerod Darling of Palenville, Randy M. Ormerod, Jack H. Ormerod and Paul D. Ormerod, Jr., all of Catskill; four great grandchildren; and sister-in-law Marian Craig of Catskill.
A sister Maude Deyo and brother John R. Craig predeceased her.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, 2003 at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill and will be followed by interment in the
Town of Catskill Cemetery. The Rev. David C. Tipple, Pastor of Kiskatom Reformed Church, will officiate.

She was predeceased by a son, Michael; a brother, Herman Meier Jr.; and a sister, Sophie Meier.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas Sawyer; daughters, Claudia Sawyer of Fairborn, Ohio, and Noreen Lower of Alexandria, VA; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

South Pasadena, Fla.—Frank E. Foti, formerly of Watervliet and Catskill, died Friday evening, Feb. 21, 2003 at the Palms of Pasadena, in South Pasadena, Fla.
He was born July 3, 1909 in Rutland, Vt., the son of the late Joseph and Gaetana (Del Campo) Foti.
Mr. Foti owned and operated the Ideal Barber Shop in Rensselaer for over 52 years prior to his retirement.
He was a communicant of Prince of Peach Church in Sun City, Fla.
Mr. Foti was a former member of the Watervliet Elks Lodge and a past president of the Catskill Glee Club.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Helen Foti of Sun City Center, Fla.; three grandsons, Christopher Foti of Palm Bay, Fla., Dr. Paul Foti of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Frank Foti of Clifton Park; two granddaughters, Theresa Heitzmann of Clarksville, Md., and Amy Swinford of Oveido, Fla.; a brother, Joseph Foti of Barre, Vt., a nephew, Dr. Thomas LaPlaca of Rutland, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Foti was predeceased by his wife, Josephine T. (DiBiase) Foti on Oct. 13, 1997.

Born in Port Reading, N. J., Jan. 27, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Penna.
A resident of the Catskill and Cairo area for many years,
Mrs. DeManso was a Red Cross volunteer and a member of the Board of Elections in
Oswego. She was a communicant of

communicant of the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo, a member of the Catholic
Daughters of Oswego, and a member of the Legion of Mary. Prior to her retirement
she was a seamstress in New York City.
Survivors include her son, Andrew DeManso of Catskill; a brother, Carmine Penna of Missouri; a sister, Palma DeClara of Sayville, L. I.; a grandson, Joseph DeManso of Catskill; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was born on June 19, 1918 to Volney and Ruth L. (O’Brien) Grinnell in Sodas, N. Y.
Survivors include his sons John of Kingston, Gerald of Stafford, Va., and Cutis of Paonia, Colo.; brothers Ralph of Lexington and Bruce of Longmont, Colo.;’ six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Grinnell was predeceased by his wife Emma (Cross) on Dec. 26, 1996, step-brother Willard and stepsisters Esther and Alice.

Cairo—Michael J. Rapunzel, 52, of Foster Road, Cairo, died at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson, on Feb. 23, 2003, after an illness.
He was born in Massachusetts on July 27, 1950, and was
the son of the later John and Margaret (Hallet) Metelica.
He recorded music with Spirit and Flech, Metelica and Rapunzel. He played at Carnegie Hall. He was a producer, writer and singer. In recent years he became an EMT participant and had a nursing certificate from Greenfield Community College and STCC of Springfield.
His philosophy, music and contributions were all dedicated with the belief in the brotherhood of man’s divine connection to one another.
Survivors include his sister, Jacqueline Metelic Brezinski and her husband Mark of Greenfield, Mass., three sons, Beowulf “Matt” Lieberman of Seattle, Wash., Mickpeter Rapunzel Miller of Portland, Ore., and Adrain Sackheim of Hatfield, Mass., three daughters, Rachel Kashner of Greenfield, Mass., Micha McClure of Colorado and Mrissa Mikovan Sellers of Springfield, Mass., nephews Isaac Clarke, Alexander Clarke and nieces Ivy Clark and Kaylee Metelic Brzezinski, and a friend, Steve Abrahamson of Cairo.
Mr. Rapunzel was predeceased by his sister Nancy.

Catskill—Rose Gavigan, 80, formerly of 167 Main St., Catskill, died Feb. 25, 2003 at her daughter’s residence in South Cairo following a brief illness.
Mrs. Gavigan was born Aug. 22, 1943 and had worked as a clerk at J. J. Newberry’s on Main Street for many years and subsequently at Catskill High School.
He husband predeceased her on Aug. 17, 1994 and following his death she moved to Feddes Mobile Home Park on route 23B.
Survivors include her three children; Barry Gavigan of Ormond Beach, Fla., Dennis Gavigan of Rotterdam and Kathleen Pough of South Cairo; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 3, 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Catskill, where she was a devoted parishioner.
Committal of her remains will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
Private cremation was conducted Tuesday at the Albany Rural Crematorium under the direction of the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill.

Greenville—Emma L. Howard, 87, died peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003 at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.
She was born April 2, 1915 in Spruceton, the 10th
of 11 children of Edmund and Lilly (Dunham) Simmons. She was married Nov. 2, 1937 to Fred E. Howard until his
death on April 21, 1982.
She lived most of her life in Westkill and was a long time member of the Lexington United Methodist Church and many organizations including Lexington Ladies Auxiliary, Health Club, Ladies Aid, Westkill Community Hall Improvement Association, WAPJL Senior Citizens Club and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Her hobbies included crocheting and baking cookies. She was a very kind and caring person who touched the hearts of all she met, and was loved by all.
She is survived by her children Freda J. Fancher and her husband Ron of Greenville and Glenn E. Howard and his wife Kathleen of Westkill.
She is also survived by grandchildren Pamela J. Dwyer and her husband Tom, Rhonda L. Margiasso and her husband Jim of South Cairo, Shana Menia and her husband Greg, and Stephanie Lollis and her husband Chris of Florida; great-grandchildren Jessica, T. J. and Mitch Dwyer, Ryan and Martin Margiasso, Shelby Cone and Nicholas, Emily and Connor Menia.
Also surviving are sisters Harriet Speenburgh of Stamford and Laura Rappleyea of Westkill, and many nieces and nephews.

Catskill—Ralph Douglas Jenes Sr., 57, of Catskill, died Monday Feb. 24, 2003 at Columbia Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since Valentine’s Day.
He was born March 5, 1945 to the late Charles J. and Agnes Stewart Jones.
He was graduate of Catskill High School, Class of 1963, and enlisted in the Air Force on Jan. 10, 1964. He served as a radio operator specializing in Morse Interception Operations, earning the rank of sergeant until his discharge on Jan. 9, 1968.
He was a life member of Sullivan-Teator Post No. 770 VFW as well as an avid bowler for the Twin Cities, Monday and Friday night bowling leagues. He enjoyed playing catcher with the Old Timers Softball League and later served as their manager. He also enjoyed a good round of golf.
He was employed as a fork-lift operator with Brockway-Smith of Coxsackie and had formerly worked for the Catskill Agway for 15 years.
He is survived by his loving wife Gail Vandermark Jenes, whom he married on Nov. 2, 1985. Also surviving are their children Charles D. Jenes and Cherish M. Jenes of Catskill; his sons Ralph D. Jenes Jr. and his wife Heather of Catskill and Jason M. Jenes of Cornwallville; sisters Carolyn Jenes Reilly of Catskill, Mrs. Loren (Sharon Jenes) Grant of Syracuse, and Majorie L. Knigge of Rapid City, S. D.; grandsons Douglas R. Jenes and Ryan M. Jenes of Catskill and Damian J. Jenes of Cornwallville; mother-in-law Rose Vandermark of Catskill, aunt Margaret (Peg) Story of Kiskatom; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was a loving family man, brother and great friend to so many, he will be so deeply missed by all who knew loved him.

Coxsackie, died Friday Feb. 24, 2003 at his residence.
He was born in Catskill on Feb. 7, 1938 and was the son
of the late James S. and Lucy May (Aiken) McPartland.
He had been a lifetime area resident,
He owned and operated Dolan’s Bar in Coxsackie and was also an honorary
member and past foreman of D. M. Hamilton No. 2 Fire Company and a communicant
of St. Mary’s Church in Coxsackie.
He loved woodworking and was also and avid fan of the Yankees and the Buffalo Bills. He was a graduate of Coxsackie High School and served in the U. S. Navy as machinist mate. Prior to his retirement he was employed by the New York State Thruway.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Ilene B. (Martin) McPartland, stepson Joseph M. Van Wie, stepdaughter Lesa A. Rendo, Brother Thomas (Tippy) E. McPartland, all of Coxsackie; sister Mrs. Robert (Judy) Litchko of Athens, grandson Nicholas W. Rendo and granddaughter Kristina Marie Van Wie, and several nieces and nephews.

Born Feb.21, 1910 in Providence, R. I., he was the son of the late Giocondo and Filomena (Giovangeli) Salmaggi.
Mr. Salmaggie was an insurance underwriter for U. S. F. & C. in New York City prior to his retirement. He was a member of the local 802 Musicians Union in New York City. Formerly of Orangeburg, Mrs. Salmaggie had been an Acra-area resident since 1986. He was a member and trustee of the Cairo-Durham Elks Lodge No. 2630.
Survivors include his wife of over 65 years, Leaner (Gembrowsky) Salmaggi of Acra; two sons, Paul Salmaggi and wife Marion of Tappan, and Ferris Salmaggie and wife Teresa of Farmingville; a daughter, Mary Ann Rohlk and husband Michael of Cape Coral, Fla.; four sisters, Alba Tutrani of Amsterdam, Edit Covias and husband Carmine of Schenectady, Jeannette Coviasand and husband Salvatore of Canajoharie, and Aurora Hanscom of Amsterdam; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was born March 22, 1922, in Catskill. She was the daughter of the late Lewis Petett and Maude Barkman Petett.
She had been a resident of Columbia since 1995 coming from the Colony, Texas.
She was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Harold H. Niekamp Sr. of Columbia; three sons, Carl W. Niekamp (Veronica) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Bruce E. Niekamp (Antoinette) of Venice, Fla.; and Harold H. Niekamp Jr., (Debra) of Simpsonville, S. C.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Niekamp was predeceased by a sister, Harriet G. Greene.

Coxsackie—Ronald W. Paul, of Lafayette Avenue in Coxsackie died at the Albany Medical Center Hospital on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003.
A resident of Coxsackie for seven years, Mr. Paul was born in Watervliet on Jan. 14, 1933.
He was a member of the Iron Workers Local No. 534 in Albany, the American Legion Post No. 166 in Coxsackie, the B. P. O. E. (Elks) No. 1341, the Coxsackie Senior Citizens and the Old Timers Stock Car Club in Earlton.
He had built stock cars for racing at Lebanon Valley and Malta speedways.
Mr. Paul was a master sergeant in the Army National Guard form 1947 to 1965 and had served in Fort Knox, Ky., from 1954 to 1965 as a tank instructor.
He is survived by his life partner Michalina (Millie) Roberts of Coxsackie; sons Stephen Paul and his fiancée Tammy Rausch of Cohoe, MSGT Dale Paul, USA, of Fort Knox, William Paul and Ronald Paul Jr. both of Troy; daughter Donna Paul of Myrtle Beach, S. C.; and sister Zita Wilkinson of Watervliet. Nine grandchildren also survive.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2003 by the Rev. John Moyna in St. Mary’s Church, 80 Mansion St., Coxsackie. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and may call on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Sopris Funeral Home Inc., 11877 Route 9W, Coxsackie. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in the spring. For those who desire, a memorial donation may be made in Mr. Paul’s memory to the American Diabetes Association, 7 Washington Square, Albany, N. Y.

Thomas V. Porto Sr.
World War II veteran
Catskill—Thomas Porto, of 26 Clinton Ave., in Catskill,
died peacefully Wednesday, Feb.26, 2003 at home.
He was born Dec. 4, 1924 in Catskill, the son of the late Frank and Clara (Missasi) Porto Sr.
Mr. Porto served in the U. S. Army and was a veteran of World War Ii. He was the superintendent for the Village of Catskill Department of Public Works prior to his retirement. Mr. Porto was a volunteer fireman and a proud life member of Citizens Hose Company No. 5, where he was recently made a member of the Fifty Year Club. He was a loving man and a great friend to many. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
Mr. Porto is survive by his wife, Helen (Fiore) Porto of Catskill; son, Thomas Porto Jr., of New York City; daughters Linda Barbera of Branford, Conn., and Jamie Sweet of Bridgeport. Conn., grandchildren, Michael and Lindsay Barbera of Guilford, Conn.; brothers, Charles and Patsy Porto, both of Catskill; sisters. Anna Cross and Tess DeSantis, both of Catskill; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Porto was predeceased by sisters, Josephine Candrilli, Mariella Rich and Virginia DeSantis, and brothers Louis Porto and Frank Porto Jr.
Relatives and friends may call at Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill on Friday, Feb. 28 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
A memorial service for Mr. Porto will be conducted 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Traver & Mc Curry Funeral Home on behalf of the Hudson Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association and the Hudson Valley and Greene County Royal Order of the Blue Vest.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. John J. Murphy, pastor of St. Patrick’s R. C. Church of Catskill, will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
