JOSEPH P HIGGINS
Retired Chief Engineer

TEXAS CITY, TEXAS – Joseph P. Higgins Jr., 71, of Texas City, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005 in Texas City. 

He was born Nov. 20, 1933 in New York City. 

He was a retired chief engineer with Tidewater and Ocean Runner.  He was an active  member of V.F.W. Lodge 5400 and with the American Eagles Lodge 3789.

Mr. Higgins was retired veteran from the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army, where he received a Purple Heart during World War II.

Survivors include his dear and loving wife, Cecile Higgins of Texas City; daughter, Connie Voelkel and husband Andy; grandsons, Lane and Tristen Voelkel of Texas City; sisters, Patricia Connor of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, and Maureen Kelleher of Schenectady and numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, at Emken-Linton Funeral Home in Texas City.

Internment will follow at Houston National Cemetery.

Calling hours will be 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

AMELIA MARJORIE JONES
Pianist for Mount Tabor AME Zion Church 

CATSKILL – Amelia Marjorie Jones, 70, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005. 

Born Oct. 3, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Moses Samuel Taylor and Mildred Gertrude Taylor in Catskill. 

Mrs. Jones was the older of two children.  She graduated from Catskill High School in 1953.  She was the first African-American cheerleader in the Catskill School District.  She also studied piano at an early age and was known as a pianist for the Mount Tabor AME Zion Church.  After graduating from Catskill High School, she completed her Associate Degree in Business at Kingston Business School.  She was employed with the Department of Motor Vehicle for nine years.  Later she was employed with the Greene County Department of Social Services for 23 years and retired in 1992.  On March 15, 1955, she married Samuel “Sonny” Jones at Riverview Baptist Church in Coeymans, NY, they had six children.  She has been a faithful and active member of the Riverview Baptist Church in Coeymans for 49 years.  Throughout this period she served as a director for the Youth Choir, a member of the adult choir and was a dedicated usher.  She enjoyed ushering and served as president of the church’s usher board.  She was president of the Usher’s and Nurse’s Auxiliary of the Hudson River Frontier Missionary Baptist Association, was a past president and corresponding secretary of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Hudson River Frontier Missionary Baptist Association.  She enjoyed bowling in the Senior Citizen’s Bowling League with a high score of 276 and was a great dancer.  She also sang with the Treble Choraliers of Catskill and spent her free time doing puzzles and demonstrating her ability to double-dutch with youth.  She enjoyed baby sitting her grandchildren.  Traveling was also a favorite past-time, she took many cruises with her friends and attended local, state and national Baptist Conventions and traveled to the Caribbean, and Swaziland, South Africa to visit with her daughter who was on the mission field.

Survivors include her children, Janice Jones of Catskill, Sandra (Larry) McCreary of Landover, MD, Kimberly Jones-Holt of Catskill, Roxanne Jones (Antonio) Booth of Nashua, NH, Samuel-Moses Jones of Jersey City, NJ, Andrew Douglas (Kimberly) Jones of Catskill; grandchildren, Chavonda Holt, John Holt, Jr., Shawna Jones, Joshua Holt, Edna Cole, Hayley Jones, Hannah Jones, Andrew D. Jones II; three great-grandchildren, Desante Holt, Dyaire Holt, and Alanna Holt; sisters-in-law, Zelda Foy and Forrest Ann Jones; adopted daughters, Elaine Grant and Euodias Thorpe; cousins, Ted and Betty Dickson; friends, Gloria Jones and Ola Mae Irvis, along with other nieces, nephews, friends and supportive church family.

She was predeceased by her brother, Douglas Andrew.

Calling hours are Wednesday, 6 to 9 p.m. at the Second Missionary Baptist Church, Main Street, Catskill.

Funeral services will be Thursday, 11 a.m. at the church.

Internment will follow at the Town of Catskill Cemetery.

WILBERT JOHN JULIUS
World War II Veteran

CATSKILL – Wilbert John Julius, 84, of 1 Hop-O-Nose, Catskill, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill.

Born June 24, 1920 in New Orleans, LA, he was the son of Wilbert and Bernice (Barber) Julius.

Mr. Julius served in the United States Army and was a veteran of World War II.  He was employed by Duplex Paints in Queens, NY prior to his retirement.  Formerly of Queens, he has been a Catskill resident since 1980.  He was a member of Mt. Tabor A.M.E. Zion Church in Catskill, he served as the Pastor’s Steward and was a member of the Men’s Choir, a member Pro-Temp of the Catskill Housing Authority, and was actively involved in the Disabled American Veteran’s Association.

Survivors include his ex-spouse, Katherine Julius of Queens; two sons, Sheldon Julius of Bronx, NY, and Edward Julius and wife Pamela, both of the Woodlands, TX; two grandchildren, Sean Julius of Port Chester, NY, and Christopher Julius of The Woodlands, TX; and a daughter-in-law Sharon Julius of Port Chester, NY.

Calling hours are Thursday, 1 to 2 p.m. at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

The Rev. Moses Carter will be officiating.

Internment will follow in Catskill Rural Cemetery.

ZITA HELANE “KITTY” MULQUEEN
Beloved Wife

GREENVILLE – Zita Helane “Kitty” Mulqueen, 70, of Greenville, died at her home March 1, 2005.

Born Oct. 29, 1934 in Hempstead, L.I., she was the daughter of the late William J. and Mary Catherine (Flori) Byrne.

Mrs. Mulqueen was a nurse at Bellevue Hospital prior to her retirement.  She married John J. Mulqueen on Feb. 14, 1982 and they shared 23 happy years together.  She was an active member of the Greenville American Legion Post No. 291 Ladies Auxiliary, the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Michael J. Quill Irish American Sports Centre.  She was also the Equestrian Aide to the Grand Marshall of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Survivors include her beloved husband John J. Mulqueen of Greenville; step-daughters, Joyce Imbrogno and her husband Louis of Marco Island, FL, Margaret Samoyedny and her husband William of Yonkers, NY, and Eileen Burns and her husband Jim of Guilderland, NY; a son-in-law, Thomas Melella of Chantilly, VA; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two nieces, Deborah and Jennifer Scambati; and nephew, James Scambati.  She was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Barbara Melella; a granddaughter, Erin Burns; a brother William Byrne; and two sisters, Elizabeth McKeon and Mary Scambati.

Calling hours are Thursday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, Route 81, Greenville.

Funeral services will be Friday, 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, Greenville.

Internment will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains, NY.

ELEANOR B. SNYDER
Loving wife and mother

CATSKILL – Eleanor B. Snyder, 86, of Catskill died Monday, Feb. 28, 2005 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.

Born May 23, 1918 in Catskill, she was the daughter of the late Rodney and Lillian Bunt Botsford.

Eleanor graduated from Catskill High School and was a retired secretary. 

She was an avid bridge player and reader, and she loved to travel. 

Eleanor was a life-long member of the Catskill United Methodist Church, a choir member, a member of the Catskill United Methodist Women and active in all phases of church life.  She was also a member of the Catskill Ecumenical Council Atatekais and several bridge clubs.

She was pre-deceased by her husbands, James W. Guldenstern Sr. and Lester Snyder.

She is survived by her children, Judith Gross of Albany, Rodney Guldenstern and wife, Mary Ann of Catskill and James Guldenstern and wife, Judith of Catskill; her grandchildren, Susannah Ford and husband Randy of Albany, Tristine Reilly of New Boston, NH, Michael Guldenstern and wife Amie of New Boston, NH, and Amanda and Larissa Guldenstern of Catskill; and five great-grandchildren.

Eleanor donated her body to science through the Albany Medical College Anatomical Gift Program.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 6 at 3 p.m. at the Catskill United Methodist Church, 40 Woodland Ave., Catskill.  All who wish to celebrate the life of this loving woman who touched the lives of so many, are cordially invited to attend.

SHIRLEY A. (SAHS) AGGERS
Devoted mother

HANNACROIX -  Shirley A. (Sahs) Aggers, 75, of Hannacroix, died March 1, 2005 at St. Peter’s Hospice.

She was born June 24, 1929 in Rochester, and was the daughter of the late Norman and Viola (Huey) Sahs.

Formerly of Long Island, she has been an area resident for the past 30 years.

She retired from the family business, Autocon Corp. of Hannacroix, where she and her late husband, Richard A. Aggers, who predeceased her on Feb. 14, 1991, worked side-by-side prior to his death.

Mrs. Aggers was very dedicated to her church, The Medway Congregational Christian Church, where she was an active member.  Serving as Sunday School Superintendent, a deacon and a Sunday School Volunteer.  She was dedicated to Daily Devotions.

She was a volunteer at the Ephesian Shop in Ravena, and was a member of the Medway Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary.  She served on the New Baltimore Planning Board.

She was an active reader, which she loved and enjoyed.

She was the devoted mother to her children Daniel Aggers of Hannacroix and Carol Agger Mangold and her husband Michael of Port St. Lucie, FL, and grandmother to Nicholas, Ryan, and Evan Mangold, all of Port St. Lucie.

Mrs. Aggers leaves behind all the friends that have touched her life, particularly her close friends within her prayer group.

Private cremation took place Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands.

A Memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Friday, March 4 at the Medway Congregational Christian Church, 1324 Route 26, Climax, with Pastor Stan Lemons, officiating and Pastor Dennis Gardner assisting.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the W.C. Brady’s Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie, NY 12051.

GLENROY W. SWEET
Mechanic and welder

WESTERLO – Glenroy W. Sweet, 87, of South Westerlo, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Lutheran Health Care Center in Delmar, NY.

Born in Greenville, Feb. 7, 1918, he was the son of the late Warren and Sarah (Scutt) Sweet.

He graduated from Coxsackie-Athens High School.  He was a welder at Walter Motor Truck in Voorheesville, NY and also had worked as a mechanic at Hyatt Field’s Garage in Oak Hill and at Aerobilt in Athens.  Upon his retirement from Walter’s he worked for a time at Willig and Brown in Greenville.  He was actively involved in the Westerlo Historical Society, a life member of the Oak Hill-Durham Vol. Fire Co. and the Westerlo Vol. Fire Co.  A member of the Helderberg Hilltoppers Camping Club and also a member for 55 years of the Catskill Valley Grange and was awarded the Golden Sheaf.

Survivors include his beloved wife Beulah (Treyer) Sweet of So. Westerlo; a son, Kenneth Sweet of Catskill; three grandchildren: Capt. Douglas Sweet, US Army and his wife Vicki, Kyle and Stephanie Sweet.

He was predeceased by a sister, Marguerite Bush.

Calling hours are Friday, 4 to 8 p.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, State Route 81, Greenville.

Funeral services will be Saturday, 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Spring internment will be in the Greenville Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

LOUIS J. VISCOVITCH
Lacy’ employee/WWII vet

DENNYSVILLE/ACRA – Louis J. Viscovitch, 84, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at a Calais Hospital following a long illness.

Born Dec. 1, 1920 in New York City, he was the son of Louis F. and Ada McCullen Viscovitch.

Mr. Viscovitch served in the U. S. Navy during World War II.  He was retired from Lacy’s of Catskill.

For many years, Mr. Viscovitch was associated with the Methodist Church in New York and in Maine and was also associated with the Gideon Bible Society.

Survivors include his wife, Caroline “Tudy” Viscovitch of Eastport; a daughter, Patricia A. Viscovitch of Freehold; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Kay Viscovitch of Indianapolis, IN; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Clifford B. and Anita Turner of Bangor; a grandson, Daniel A. Pugsley, Jr. of Bangor, Franklin; and two granddaughters, Dawn Powell of Connecticut and Robin Haase of Albuquerque, NM.

A memorial service will be held in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Ravena resident

RAVENA – Neil H. Christensen, 47, of Ravena, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005. 

He was born in California and had lived in Ravena for one year.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Heath-Christensen of Ravena; mother, Narvella Christensen; sisters, Brenda and Laurie Christensen, all of Iowa; niece, Kelly Garcia of Virginia; and one great-nephew and two great-nieces.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at the Babcock Funeral Home, Ravena.

Calling hours will be at the funeral home prior to service starting at noon and after services until 2 p.m.

Contributions may be made to any children’s charity.

Beloved husband

GREENPORT – Robert K. Ingles, 53, of Greenport, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, after a long illness at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson.

Born May 21, 1951, in Great Barrington, MA, he was the son of the late Harry L. Sr. and Beatrice (McCaully) Ingles.

During his working years, Mr. Ingles was employed for 30 years as a truck driver for both the Peterson Petroleum Co. and the A.R. Sandri Trucking Company.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Shirley A. (Salisbury) Ingles of Greenport; three daughters and their husbands, Bobbie-Jo and her husband Bernard Barrett of Hudson, Shirley A. and her husband Gary Drahushuk of Hudson, and Ashley L. and her husband Joseph Cefaliello of Hudson; a brother, Harry L. Ingles, Jr., and his wife Sally of Philmont; seven grandchildren, Robert, Brandan, Marcades, Alexis and Lindsy Barrett and Vincent and Tyler Drahushuk; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Valenti and Richards Funeral Home, 700 Town Hall Drive, Greenport.

Funeral services will be held Monday, 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Kenneth Coddington of the Philmont United Methodist Church officiating.

Internment will take place in the spring in the family plot of the Mellenville Union Cemetery.

CARMELLA M. ‘CARRIE’ SAVLATORE
Loving wife and mother

SAUGERTIES – Carmella M. “Carrie” Salvatore, 86, of Route 32, died Thursday, March 3, at her residence after a brief illness.

Born April 10, 1918 in Glasco, she was the daughter of the late Angelo and Maria Alesio Tiano.

A lifetime area resident she was employed as a seamstress in several area dress shops.

She was a member of the United Ladies Garment Workers Union and a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church.

During World War II she did volunteer work on Mare Island Ship Yard.

Survivors include three daughters; Regina Salvatore-Marcucci of Saugerties, Joyce Coulouris of Catskill and Carolyn Schmitt of Saugerties; two sons, Anthony A. Salvatore of Cementon and Joseph P. Salvatore of Mount Marion; a sister Palma Welch of Fort Worth, TX; and a brother Frank Tiano of Long Beach, CA.  Seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Salvatore was predeceased by her husband Anthony on 1999, a sister, Mary Persey, and a brother, Pasquale Tiano.

Her funeral procession will form 9:15 a.m. Monday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, corner of John and Lafayette Streets, then to St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, where a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered.

Internment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Barclay Heights, Saugerties.

JOHN A. MACGAHAN
Psychologist

HAINES FALLS – John A. MacGahan, 85, of Twilight Park, Haines Falls, died at home on March 4, 2005 after a year-long battle with cancer.

He was born on Dec. 11, 1919 in Pittsburgh, PA to Paul and Carolyn (Campbell) MacGahan.

He graduated from Duke University in 1941 and served in the Army Air Force during World War II.  He received his PhD from the University of Chicago under the GI Bill.  His entire career as a clinical psychologist was with the Veterans Administration.

He was a life long amateur radio operator and active in the Military Affiliated Radio System (MARS), serving as state director in Massachusetts and New York.

He was married in 1941 to Carroll Hutton MacGahan, who predeceased him by six weeks.

He is survived by three daughters, Barbara Poremba of Orange Park, FL, Susan MacGahan of Windsor, VT, and Patricia Spitko of Coopersburg, FL; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sister, Pauline Lunas of Charlotte, NC and nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are under the direction of Aston-Basagic Funeral Home, Hunter.  Services will be at the discretion of the family next summer.

EVERETT A. PEARSON
Loving husband and father

BERNE – Everett A. Pearson, 82, of Berne, passed away at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany on March 3, 2005.

Born in Preston Hollow on Aug. 12, 1922, he was the son of the late Maynard and Rosella (Lounsbury) Pearson.

Everett was a self-employed painter and paper hanger and was well known in the Albany and Greene County area for his excellent workmanship and also his quick wit.

He loved his garden and will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to all who met him.

He was a Life Member of the Weterlo Vol. Fire Co., and a member of and former Trustee (for 20 years) of the Greenville-Norton Hill U.M. Church.

Surviving are his loving wife, Elsie (Janis) Pearson; two daughters, Shirley Bryan and her husband William of Rensselaerville, and Arlene Lutz and her husband William of Edgewater, FL; his grandchildren, William Bryan and his wife Ruey, Dawn Hughes and her husband Ron, Darcy Honsinger and her husband Brian, Lowell Lutz, and his fiancé Michelle, and Richard, Karl and William Lutz; his great-grandchildren, Carley and Cody Bryan, Heather and Amy Blakeslee, Travis and Corey Hughes, Devon Lutz, Justice Honsinger, Jordan and Landon Lutz and Madison Lafferty.

Also surviving are his sister, Ellen Smith of Greenville; brother Philip Pearson and his wife Lee of Rensselaerville and Loudonville; nieces Laurie Nickford and her husband Marc, and Beth Pearson; nephews, Philip Pearson, Jr. and his wife Daphane, and Christopher Pearson and his wife Nadia; great nieces and nephews, Alsion and Sara Nickford, Alex and Hanah Bennett, and Jesica, Taylor, and Kameron Pearson.

Friends may call at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville, on Sunday, March 6, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Funeral service will be held Monday, March 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the Greenville-Norton Hill U.M. Church in Norton Hill.   Spring internment will be in the Medusa Cemetery.

SOUTH WESTERLO – Glenroy W. Sweet, 87, of South Westerlo, died on March 1, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Lutheran Health Care Center in Delmar.

JOHN FRANCIS FLANAGAN
Beloved father and husband

EAST DURHAM – John Francis Flanagan, 57, of East Durham died on Friday, March 4, 2005, at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx.

Born May 23, 1947 in Darkley, Keady, Co. Armagh, N. Ireland, he was the son of Margaret and the late Francis Flanagan.

John served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970 and was a member of the American Legion.

He was deeply involved in many social and charitable organizations, including being Past President of the County Armagh Association and a founding member of the Emerald Guild Society.  He belonged to the New York Building Managers and Metropolitan Building Managers.  He was also involved with the Three Hands Club and volunteered for the East Durham Fire Company. 

He was the beloved husband of Peggy (nee Kiernan); devoted father of John J. (NYPD) and Diane and Fintan Hogan; dear brother of Tessie Reilly and the late Michael; and brother-in-law of Nellie Flanagan and Jimmy Reilly.  He leaves behind many loving aunts, nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins and friends.

Calling hours will be held at David J. Hodder and Son Funeral Home, 899 McLean Ave., Yonkers on Sunday, March 6 and Monday, March 7 from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, March 8, at 10:45 a.m. at St. Barnabas Church in the Bronx.  Internment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Catskill.

CAIRO – Edward E. Loughman, 89, of Cario, died March 4, 2005, at Albany Medical Center after a long illness.

Bon in the Bronx on July 17, 1915, he was the son of the late John H. and Margaret (McDonald) Loughman.

Edward has been a resident of Cairo since 1974.  Prior to his retirement, he was a New York City firefighter with Engine No. 88.  While living in Cairo, he operated the Loughman’s Building Supply Co. on Route 145.

He was a member of the Cairo Republican Club, Cairo Golden Age Club, Rip Van Winkle Senior Citizens, and the Catskill Fellowship.  He was also a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Loretta Loughman of Cairo; six sons, Edward of Virginia, John of East Durham, Thomas of Connecticut, James of New Jersey, William of Georgia, and Daniel of Acra; two daughters, Ann Loughman of Albany and Lore Brady of Virginia; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held at the Richards Funeral Home, 383 Bross St. in Cairo on Monday March 7 from 5 to 9 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 8 at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, with Rev. Fr. J. Nunan, pastor, officiating.  The day of the funeral, friends are asked to meet at the church.

Loving wife

CLIMAX – Margaret A. Irving, 89, of Climax, died March 4, 2005 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Jan. 25, 1916 in Athens, the daughter of the late Ralph W.  and Mildred Van Hoesen Spoor.

She was married April 12, 1940 at Zion Lutheran Church, Athens, to Alfred Irving who survives at home.  They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this April.

Mrs. Irving was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.  She lover her garden and flowers, animals and especially her cocker spaniels.  She enjoyed baking and cooking and caring for her family.  A devoted and faithful member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Athens, she was also a member of the Lutheran Church Women.

Survivors include her loving husband Alfred Irving, their sons, Leon and his wife Ruth Irving of Wilton, NY, Mark and his wife Eleanora Irving of Provincetown, MA, and two grandchildren: Erick H. Irving of Wilton and Kira Lin Irving of Provincetown.  She is also survived by a sister Irene Chatterton of Virginia, and a brother Irving Bartlett Spoor of FL; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Irving was predeceased by her brothers Leon Spoor, John Kenneth Spoor, and a sister Nedra Herrle.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at the Sopris Funeral Home, 11877 Route 9W, West Coxsackie.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at the Zion Lutheran Church, 102 North Washington St., Athens.  The Rev. Harrison Putnam, pastor will officiate.

ETHEL MARIE (BONE) HOOSE
Beloved mother

ORANGE CITY, FL – Ethel Marie (Bone) Hoose, 64, an Athens resident for many years and, more recently, a winter resident of Orange City, died Saturday, March 5, 2005 of cancer.

Born in Ellenville Dec. 10, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Rachel (Newman) Bone.

Raised in Cairo, Ms. Hoose was well known throughout the area.  Her smile, good humor strong spirit, and unconditional love won over many hearts.  She attended Cairo Central Schools and worked for many years at American Thermostat in South Cairo, while raising her five children, the loves of her life.  In later years, she worked for Community Action of Greene County.  After moving to Athens, she became active in the Federated Church of Athens and was a member of the choir.  In Florida, she volunteered as a hospice worker at Deland Hospital.  She loved bingo, traveling and Elvis, and was a New York Yankees fan.

Survivors include her children; John and Charles Hoose, Margaret Barker and Loretta McDonald, all of Florida, and Donna Fox of Utah; two sisters, Theresa “Tena” Morrison of Homosassa, FL, and Patricia Cominos of Catskill; two brothers, Gerald Bone of Knoxville, TN, and John Bone of Tucson, AZ; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; the Robinson family of Athens, with whom she made her home for many years; and a dear friend, John Hallenbeck of Athens.

She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Sarah Rachel Hoose.

A memorial service will take place Thursday, 6 p.m. at the Federated Church of Athens, 18 North Franklin Street.  A service is planned in Florida on Saturday, March 12.

A private service will take place in the spring in the Cairo Cemetery, where she will be buried near her mother and infant granddaughter.

Cremation was handled by Alavon Direct Cremation Service, South Daytona, FL.

Beloved father

CAIRO – James F. Mowris, 53, of 500  Main St., Cairo, died March 5, 2005 at his residence. 

He was born in Rhinebeck, Nov. 2, 1951 and was the son of the late Charles and Betty Mowris.

At the time of his death, he was employed by the Kaz Company of Hudson. 

He has been an area resident of Cairo for the last six years.

Survivors include his two sons, Edwin of Kingston and Chancey of Hudson, two daughters, Selina Heywood of Copake, and Samantha Mowris of Geletian, a brother, Charles Skip Mowris of Florida, a sister, Peggy Funk of Dover Plains, NY, and 12 grandchildren.

Calling hours will be 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Valenti and Richards Funeral Home, 700 Town Hall Drive, Hudson.

A funeral service will be conducted 5 p.m. at the funeral home on Thursday.

Private cremation will follow at the Albany Rural Crematorium.

GERARD (JEFF) MURPHY
Acclaimed woodcarver

WOODSTOCK – Gerard (Jeff) Murphy, 66, died Saturday, March 5, 2005 at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston.

Born June 3, 1938 in Queens, he was the son of the late Timothy and Bertha Powers Murphy and had resided in Woodstock for the past several years.

As a child, he spent summers on the Percy Goff Twin Maple Farm in Prattsville and later was a full-time farmhand.

He was an accomplished woodcarver, whose spirit with nature touched many with his genuine deep-rooted kindness.  A man who listened to his own drummer.

Survivors include his dear friend, Linda Ocker of Kingston, a daughter, Christine Murphy, a son, Timothy Murphy, two brothers, John of Williston Park and Robert of Queens, and nieces and nephews.

Mr. Murphy was predeceased by two brothers: Timothy and James Murphy.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Lasher Funeral Home Inc., 100 Tinker St., Woodstock.

The funeral procession will form 10:15 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.  At 11 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial will be sung at St. Frances De Sales Church, Phoenicia.

Internment will be in St. Frances De Sales Cemetery in Shandaken.

CATSKILL – Frank Francis Byas, 87, of Catskill, died Monday, March 7, 2005, at Columbia-Greene Long Term Care where he had been a patient since March 4.

Born in Palmer, PA, on March 3, 1918, he was the son of the late Emery and Ann Gados Szucs.

Mr. Byas joined the U.S. Army in 1937 an re-enlisted in 1943 serving for another two years.  He was a long-time employee of Alpha Cement Co. in Cementon.  He was a member of the Cairo United Methodist Church, Coxsackie, VFW Post No. 166, and a former member of the Cementon Sportsman’s Club.

Survivors include three sons, Arthur Byas of Hannacroix, Clyde Byas of Cairo, and Bennett Byas of Catskill; three grandsons, Cpl. Corie Byas of Quantico, VA, Jordan Byas of Hannacroix, and Daniel Byas of Catskill; a sister, Mrs. Raymond (Anna) Michaels of Grosse Pointe, MI; and brother, Michael Szucs of Oceanside, L.I.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Hilda Edwards Byas on Nov. 25, 1999; and five siblings, Joseph Szucs, Mary Nicols, Andrew Suich, Emery Szucz, and Rose Mongardi.

Calling hours are Thursday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Funeral services will be held Friday, 11 a.m. in the Remembrance Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Retta Lykens, pastor of the Cairo United Methodist Church, officiating.

PALENVILLE – Elizabeth C. Pernice, 89, of 493 Pennsylvania Ave., Palenville, died Monday, March 7, 2005 at Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill.

She was born Dec. 3, 1915 in Brooklyn, the daughter of the late Christopher and Theresa (Cucera) Rudd.

Mrs. Pernice was an employee of ToniAnn Garments in New York City prior to her retirement.

She was a member of the Knights of Columbus Senior Citizens in Brooklyn.  She had been a Palenville resident since 1998. 

Survivors include her son, John Pernice and wife Kathleen, both of Palenville; a stepsister, Josie Minson-Selewski of Queens; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Pernice was predeceased by her husband Rosario Pernice; a son Frank Pernice; two brothers, Joseph Rudd and George Rudd; and a sister, Helen Rudd Augello.

CAIRO -  Lawrence Joseph Kosanke, 73, of 119 Meadow Road, Cairo, died Wednesday, March 9, at home after a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 11, 1931 in Staten Island, the son of the late Bernard and Virginia (Sherry) Kosanke.

Formerly of Brookfield, Conn., Mr. Kosanke was an employee of Kimberly-Clark in New Milford, Conn., for 19 years prior to his retirement.

He had been a Greene County resident since 1997.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Marie (Santarsiere) Kosanke of Cairo; three daughters, Debra Ann Hill of Cairo; Rosemarie Conti of Cairo; and Jennifer Kosanke of New Milford, Conn.; two brothers, Bernard Kosanke of Anderson, SC, and John Kosanke of Miami, FL; four grandchildren, Melissa Hill, AnnMarie Hill, Theresa Hill, and Jacquelyn Hill, all of Carmel, NY; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

LAWRENCE S. MACKEY
Beloved husband

GLENMONT – Lawrence S. Mackey, 86, of Glenmont, died March 3, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Lutheran Health Care Center in Delmar.

Born Sept. 29, 1918 in Oneonta, NY, he was the son of the late Sidney J. and Alice (Swart) Mackey.

Mr. Mackey served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II.  He was service manager and salesman for the Champion Spark Plug Co. until his retirement in 1980.  Upon retirement, he became active in the community in the Town of Bethlehem, being the first volunteer to transport senior citizens, he was a charter member of the Chadwick Square Park Association of which he held many offices as president, vice-president and secretary.  He was a life member of the Albany Elks.

Survivors include his wife, Georgiana (Wheeler) Mackey of Delmar and his many friends.

He was predeceased by his aunt, Pearl Haskins in 2004.

A gathering of friends to celebrate his life will take place on Sunday, April 3 at 1 p.m. at the Normanside Country Club.

‘Uncle Paul North’
‘The Friendliest Guy in Town’ 

CAIRO – On March 7, 2005, our sweet Uncle Paul died in his home on Birch Street.  He was 77 years old, born in Manhattan to the late Paul North, Sr. and Elaine Hall North.  He served his country during the Korean War.  Not only did he serve his country – he was a devoted son, brother and uncle.

Uncle Paul moved to Cairo in the 1950s to help raise his widowed sister Gloria’s children.  He was a waiter at the Skyline Restaurant in Catskill and the Rip Van Winkle Log Cabin Restaurant also in Catskill.  Then he went to spend many years as maitre’d at the Bon Fire Restaurant in Cairo under previous owners, the Shillings.  Uncle Paul enjoyed traveling the world and collecting artifacts.  He was an avid arts enthusiast who liked to work in oils on canvas until he lost his sight to glaucoma and cataracts.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews including Judy O’Connor, Peter McKenna, David Pisarri and wife Susan, Laura Pisarri-Ferraro and husband Richard, Mark Pisarri, Pamela Pisarri-Smith and husband Jeffrey, and Dion Pisarri, great nieces and nephews, Terrylynn Maruiello, Robert O’Connor and wife Debbi, Joseph O’Connor and wife Karin, Kris O’Connor and Colleen Hara, Cassandra Holdridge, Danielle McKenna, Nicole Pisarri, Jordan Pisarri, Dominick Ferraro, Jessica Post, Paul Pisarri and Neil Pisarri, great-great nieces and nephews, Vanessa Mauriello, Melissa Mauriello, Joshua-Luke, Alayney, Nehemiah, and Cheyenne O’Connor and Shanieka Frances Carr.

Mr. North is predeceased by his parents, his sister, Gloria Pisarri, and his nephew John “JP” McKenna.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 11, at the Richards Funeral Home.

Internment will be in the spring at the Cairo Cemetery.

PALENVILLE – Victor John Manning, 87, of Palenville died at his residence on Friday, March 11, 2005.

Born in Catskill on Feb. 17, 1918, he was the son of the late Wesley L. and Maude Sarah Bloom Manning.

He was a graduate of Catskill High School.  The former manager of the Palenville Bowling Alley, he was retired from the NYS Department of Equalization and Assessment in Albany where he was an appraiser.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mildred (Decker) Manning of Palenville; their daughter, Mrs. Victor (Nancy) Ferretti, also of Palenville; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. 

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 16 at 2 p.m. at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.  Mildred Manning, currently a patient at Columbia Memorial Hospital, plans to be in attendance for visitation form noon to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral.

Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday at noon.

Internment will take place in the Palenville Cemetery this spring.

He was a member of the Rip Van Winkle Club in Palenville, having been an avid golfer in his retirement, a charter member and past officer of the Palenville Fire Department, a Master Mason with the Catskill F.A. & M. #468, having joined on April 17, 1946, and a Senior Warden of the Gloria Dei Episcopal Church in Palenville.

He enjoyed trap shooting and hunting in his younger years and spent many hours in his wood-working shop building for himself and helping others with projects.

A Massachusetts native, she was living with her daughter, Janice Riley Categna in Orlando.

HAINES FALLS – Anthony Tarrzi, 92 of Haines Falls, died Sunday March 13, 2005 at Victory Memorial Hospital in Brooklyn.

The eighth of nine children, Mr. Tarrazi was born May 26, 1912 to Victor and Lydia Tarrazi.

He was retired from New York City as Inspector of Highways.

Mr. Tarrazi was married to Josephine Tarrazi on Aug. 25, 1936 who predeceased him in November, 1996.

Survivors include his five children: Barbara Hamrah of Elka Park, Frederick Tarrazi and his wife Celeste of Staten Island, George Tarrazi and his wife Kathleen of Central City, PA, Brenda Lucente and her husband Michael of Staten Island, and Gregory Tarrazi and Virginia DeSario of Haines Falls and Hazlet, NJ.

Mr. Tarrazi was predeceased by his son-in-law, Karim S. (Buck) Hamrah in April 1996.

CATSKILL – Alice Bausch, a resident of Eden Park, Catskill, died Monday, March 14, 2005 surrounded by her loving family.

Born Nov. 18, 1915 in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Suzie Meserole and James Knox.

Mrs. Bausch graduated from high school and college, also in Brooklyn, and married Ernest W. Bausch in 1936.  She worked as a switchboard operator for AT&T and later worked for the New York State Correctional Institute in Coxsackie also as a switchboard operator, she retired in 1979.  She was a fabulous cook and baker.  She also enjoyed plants, especially her award winning African violets, clematis and wisteria.

Survivors include her brother John (Josephine) Knox of S. Florida; daughter, Alice (widow of Ernest) McCabe of Climax; son, Richard (Sally) Bausch of Catskill’ granddaughter, Suzanne (Howard) Kusisto of Earlton; great-grandchildren, Ashley (Gary) Longhi of Coxsackie and Kyle Barror.

Besides her parents she was predeceased by her sister, Dorothy (1920s), sister Hazel (2004), and her husband (1978).

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Sopris Funeral Home Inc., 11877 Route 9W, Coxsackie.

TANNERSVILLE – Frederick Fromer Sr., 79, of Tannersville, died Monday, March 14, 2005, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany.

Born Aug. 26, 1925 in Tannersville, he was the son of Paul and Adelaide Molter Fromer.

He was the owner of The Fromer Corporation for 18 years before retiring.  He was a member of the American Legion Bunt Brewer Post #165, and a member of the Tannersville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Kathryn; two sons, Frederick Jr., and Jeffrey of Tannersville; four grandchildren, Michael, Joshua, Ashley and John and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother John Fromer.

Calling hours are Saturday, 7 to 9 p.m. at the Aston-Basagic Funeral Home, 7742 Main St., Hunter.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, 2 p.m. from the funeral home.  Officiating will be the Rev. Karen Monk.

Internment will be in the spring.

GREAT BARRINGTON – Leo F. Jenkins died Sunday, March 13, 2005 at Fairview Commons in Great Barrington, MA.

Born Nov. 3, 1927 in Lexington, he was the son of Kenneth and Ada (Jones) Jenkins.  He married Lois Irish on March 14, 1953.

Mr. Jenkins was the Lexington Town Highway Supervisor for 18 years, a member of the county Republican Committee for 48 years, and Lexington Republican Town chairman for 47 years, a member of the Lexington Volunteer Fire Co. for 58 years and the Fire Committee for 20 years.  He retired from Hunter-Tannersville School after 27 years as a bus driver/custodian and retired from his dairy farm in 1991.

Survivors include his wife Lois (Irish) Jenkins; son, Bradley Jenkins and companion Janeen Shoemaker of Lexington; daughters, June Frasier Hermance and Frank Hermance of Lexington, Carol (Jenkins) Stoger and Ernest of Island Park, NY; three grand-children, Courtney and Christian Jenkins of Maplecrest, Michael Hermance of Lexington; three sisters, Ruth Cross of Windham, Lois Banks of Lexington, Janice Maben of Jewett; uncle, Arthur Jenkins of Cooperstown, NY, aunt Ida Kuppens of Worcester, MA and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Ada (Jones) Jenkins, and son, Arthur G. Jenkins.

Calling hours are Friday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Aston-Basagic Funeral Home, 7742 Main St., Hunter.

COXSACKIE – Ronald W. Latta, 77, of Coxsackie, died March 14, 2005 at Albany Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 2, 1928 in Catskill, and was the son of the late Ralph and Annott (Chamberlin) Latta.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the New York State Tax Department in Albany. 

He was an avid gardener and he also loved music.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret M. (Avery) Latta of Coxsackie; a son, Stephen Latta of Colonie; a daughter, Jeanne Powers of Centennial, CO; a sister, Gail Forkan of Vancouver, WA; one grandchild, Carla Powers of Centennial, CO; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Latta was predeceased by two brothers, Glenn and Wilfred Latta.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the W.C. Brady’s Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie.  Funeral arrangements are private at the request of the family.

COXSACKIE - Ralph Mancuso, 86, died Monday, March 14, 2005 at St. Peter’s Hospice surrounded by those he loved and those who loved him.

Mr. Mancuso was a successful businessman with many diverse hobbies and interests.  He was proud to have served in the US Calvary, he was a member of the Catskill Lions Club, the Optimist’s Club of George and he served on the Board of Directors of the Catskill Hospital.  Mr. Mancuso and his family were fortunate to have Penny Ashby as his caregiver.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Ada; his four children and their spouses, Judy and Paul Carpenter, Sandra and Michael Grosso, Ralph Mancuso III, Margaret (Peggy) and Hugh Guigley; 12 grandchildren, Paul and Matthew Carpenter and Nicole Carpenter Miller, Celeste Grosso Nathan, Michael and Vincent Grosso and Judy Grosso Sickles, Wakon, Max, and Mackenzie Mancuso, Meghan and Daniel Quigley and nine great-grandchildren; dear friends, John Ferrele, Terry Kutrufis and TimReitz, all of St. Simons Island, GA.

Private cremation took place at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands.

There will be a private memorial service in Georgia at a future date.

WINDHAM – Leslie S. Holcomb, 79, of Windham, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at the Columbia-Greene Long Term Care Center, Catskill.

Born Oct. 24, 1925 in Hensonville, he was the son of Shirley and Dorothy (nee Clark) Holcomb.

Mr. Holcomb was a retired school bus driver for the Windham-Ashland-Jewett Central School District.

Survivors include  his wife Mary (nee Brockett) and his children, Carolyn Snow, Donovan Holcomb, Susan Sutton, Alan Holcomb, Sandra Smith and Sherri Miltenberger; a brother, Gerald Holcomb; a sister, Phyllis Van Valkenburg; 10 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be Friday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham.

Funeral services are Saturday, 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Ellen Oliveto officiating.

Former nurse’s aide at Greene County Hospital

PALM BAY, FL – Lilliemae Kathryn Bartley Manner, 87, died March 15, 2005 at the Hospice House, Palm Bay, FL, as a result of a stroke.

Mrs. Manner was born May 7, 1917 in Kingston, the daughter of Ira Bush and Ethel Helen Rorrick Bush.

Mrs. Manner attended Catskill schools and graduated with the Class of 1936.  For many years she worked as a nurse’s aide in the Greene County Memorial Hospital and in 1966 graduated from the Hudson School of Practical Nursing and continue to work at the hospital until moving to Hollywood, FL in 1967.

She was a long-time member of the Ladies of the Moose and had held various offices including chapter regent.

Survivors include her two sons and daughters-in-law, George E. and Rosemary A. Bartley of Palm Bay, FL, and Bruce V. and Martha M. Bartley of Catskill; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Manner was predeceased by her parents, her husband Melville O. Manner; her brother, Douglas V. Bush; and her nephew, Douglas D. Bush.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family and internment will be in the Fountainhead Memorial Park, Palm Bay, FL.

SOUTH CAIRO – Galen Berg, 53, of Pine Drive, South Cairo, died March 15, 2005 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson after a long illness.

He was born in Catskill on Sept. 26, 1951 and was the son of the late William and Marietta (Rita) Berg.

Mr. Berg served in the US Army from 1969 to 1973 serving two tours in Vietnam.  He received the Vietnam Campaign Medal W/60 Device and Vietnam Service Medal W/4 Bronze Service Stars and two Overseas Bars.

He was employed with the Town of Cairo Highway Department prior to his illness.

Survivors include his loving brother and family Raymond and Diane Berg and children of South Cairo, William Berg of Cairo, Alan Berg of South Cairo, sister, Elaine Donnelly of Leesburg, FL, a son and daughter, LG and Elke Berg of Catskill, a grandson and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephew and many friends.

Mr. Berg was predeceased by a brother Robert Jordan of California.

Private cremation will take place at Albany Rural Crematorium in Manands.

Interment of his cremains will take place at a later date in a veterans plot at the Catskill Rural Cemetery.

SOUTH CAIRO – Louise C. “Dolly” Lynch, 74, of 102 Brookside Mobile Home Park, South Cairo, died Thursday, March 17, 2005 at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson.

Born July 24, 1930 in Manhattan, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Lillian (Consalvo) Lynch.

Ms. Lynch was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cairo.

Survivors include six children, Joseph Marin, Vincent Lynch, Lillian Marin, Edward Marin, Tina Marin, and Richard Marin; two brothers, David Lynch and Charles Lynch; 27 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sons, Victor Lynch and Ralph Lynch; and a brother, Edward “Sonny” Lynch.

Calling hours are Saturday, 6 to 9 p.m. and Sunday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Funeral services will be held 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home followed by an 11 a.m. service at the Resurrection Lutheran Church, Cairo.  The Rev. Victor Nelson will be officiating. 

Internment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Catskill.

ATHENS – Francis ‘Alvah’ Mumby, 84, died Thursday, March 17, 2005.

Born Sept. 12, 1956 in England, he came to the United States in 1956.

He worked for Grumman Allied in Athens for many years, he was an avid bowler and enjoyed gardening.

He made countless trips to his native country of England.  In recent years, he loved to feed the birds and watch the squirrels.

He will be missed greatly by his family and friends.

Survivors include his daughters, June Corratt of Catskill and Susan Munoz and her husband Ike of Cairo, a son, John Mumby of Catskill, his grandchildren, Jackie Coratti and her husband Ashley of South Glens Falls, Tina Mulholland and her husband John of New Rochelle, Valerie Ciccone and her husband Tony of West Chazy, and Gary Mumby of Catskill, great-grandchildren, Matthew Cooper, Jessica Mulholland, Amanda Mumby, and Kayla Ostrander.

The family would like to thank Elania Campbell who was a wonderful helper to Alvah.

Mr. Mumby was predeceased by his wife Hilda Mumby, a son, Alec Mumby and daughter-in-law, Debra Mumby.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of The Richards Funeral Home, 28 North Vernon St., Athens.

Private cremation will take place at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands.

Internment of his cremains will take place at a later date in the family plot of the Athens Rural Cemetery.

Robert Allan Constable, Jr., 55, passed away March 17, 2005 at Kingston City Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

Born Jan. 23, 1950 in Catskill, he was the son of Violet and the late Robert Constable Sr. of Westkill.

He was a graduate of Hunter-Tannersville Central School and a volunteer with the Lexington Rescue Squad and Fire Department, as well as a member of Pioneers of America.  He was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.

After 25 years of service with the New York Telephone Company, he retired and went to work at North Lake Campground and then with Severn Trent Services, Inc.  He also worked part-time as a real estate agent.

He was predeceased by his father Robert Constable Sr.

He is survived by his mother Violet (Betty) Constable; his daughters, Michele and husband Michael Radcliffe, and Angela and husband John Luvera; his sisters, Betty and husband Bob Hendrickson of Rosendale, and Joyce Steiner and husband Sandy of Las Vegas; his brother Eugene Constable and wife Susan of Westkill; as well as five grandchildren, Alexandria, Michael Jr., Jordan, Chandler, and Logan Radcliffe, plus Isabella who is expected to arrive any day, and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Monday, March 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Aston-Basagic Funeral Home, 7742 Main St., Hunter.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 11 a.m. at the funeral home.  Officiating will be the Rev. Ellen Olliveto.

Spring internment will be in the Westkill Community Cemetery.

CATSKILL – Agnes Ruth Sutherland Stewart, 97, of 70 Brooks Lane, Catskill, died Thursday, March 17, 2005 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

Born Dec. 13, 1907 in Marbletown, NY, she was the daughter of the late Simon and Laura (Wood) Sutherland.

Agnes was an employee of J.J. Newberry’s and A&P Food Market in Catskill.  She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Catskill, Catskill Senior Fellowship, Easter Star, and a life member of the Catskill Elks Lodge Auxiliary.

Survivors include three sisters, Bessie Sherman, Thelma Sutherland and Alice Powell, all of Catskill; two brothers, Percy Sutherland and Norman Sutherland, both of Catskill; one daughter, Doris Ritenour of Danville, VA; two step-daughters, Catherine Cole of Kingston and Rae Maouris of Kingston; four granddaughters, and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Stewart, on Aug. 27, 1977, and a step-daughter, Florence Parvi.

Private cremation will be performed at Park View Cemetery in Schenectady.

Spring internment in Marbletown Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions in Agnes’ name may be made to the United Methodist Church of Catskill Memorial Fund; or Community Hospice of Columbia-Greene.

GREENVILLE – Holly Lynn R. Mayfield, 43, of Greenville died suddenly on March 18, 2005 at Columbia Memorial Hospital  in Hudson of injuries received in an accident while clearing land with her family.

Born in Flemington, NJ on Jan. 8, 1962, she was the daughter of Bertram and Iris (Lumbiase) Randolph.

She and her family moved to Greenville in 2000 from Germantown.

Holly Lynn was a graduate of Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, receiving a BA in Math Education.  A loving wife and mother, she was a member of the Leah Home Schooling Organization, a co-director of the Creation Crafters 4H Club and a former Sunday school teacher.

Surviving besides her parents, are her husband Murray Mayfield, pastor of the Greenville Center Baptist Church; five children, Julie Ann, Joshua, Kyle, Heather and Daniel Mayfield; a brother, Drew Randolph and his wife Melanie of Baldwinsville; and a sister, Lisa Daniels and her husband, Rev. William Daniels of South Africa.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 State Route 81 in Greenville.  Funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. from the funeral home.

Born July 2, 1911 in Cementon, she was the daughter of the late William and Louise (Rightmeyer) Burger.

Clara was an employee of New York Telephone in Catskill prior to her retirement.  She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

She was predeceased by a brother, Jerome Burger; a sister, Marie Schlenker; and a son, Earl Pysher Jr.

Survivors include a daughter, Louise Ferriolo of Catskill; three granddaughters, Linda Annese, Antoinette Kingman and Michelle Mann, all of Catskill; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

PALENVILLE – Martha Marie “Sharp” Reeth, 83, of Palenville, died March 20, 2005 at her beloved.

She was born in the Bronx on May 18, 1921 to the late Hugh and Anna Conlon Sharp.  She was a graduate of Newton High School and was employed as a secretary at various offices including the Red Cross during World War II.

She married Joseph W. Reeth Sr. on Aug. 4, 1946.  After many visits to the area, they became residents of Palenville in 1973 and faithful communicants of Sacred Heart Church.

Survivors include her loving husband of 58 years, Joseph W. Reeth Sr. and their son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Deborah Reeth of Cumming, GA, six grandchildren: Joseph W. Reeth III, Takai Reeth and Charmaine Reeth in Flushing, Kevin and his wife Jeannie Reath II of San Jose, CA, Tim Reeth of Burlingame, CA, and Greg Reeth of Castle Rock, CO, four great-grandchildren: Stephanie Reeth, twins, Michael and Anthony Gutierez, and Cody Reeth; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Joseph W. Reeth on May 27, 1985 in addition to seven brothers.

She was born Jan. 8, 1939 in Manhattan, New York City, the daughter of the late Joseph and Angelina (Palumbo) Mantegna.

Mrs. Ruzzi was a licensed beautician.  She later was a concessionaire at the American Thermostat in South Cairo, and a home health aide for Eddy Visiting Nurses Association of Northeaster New York.

She was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Catskill.  She was a past member of the Leeds Hose Company Ladies Auxiliary and St. Patrick’s Mothers Club.

Survivors include her husband of over 44 years, Mr. Joseph A. Ruzzi Sr. of Catskill; two sons, Joseph A. and Michael F. Ruzzi of Catskill; a daughter, Angela M. Ruzzi of Catskill; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ruzzi was predeceased by a brother Frank Mantegna.

BROOKLYN – Ethel B. Hanson, 87, of Ocean Ave., Brooklyn, died Sunday, March 20, 2005 at Kingston Hospital.

Born in Bridgeport, NY, Dec., 16, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Louise (Propst) Hanson.

Mrs. Hanson was an Operator Supervisor with AT&T in New York City for over 38 years and was a member of the AT&T Pioneers.

Survivors include a niece Barbara Raffiani of Catskill, a grandnephew, John Raffiani and his wife Leah of MO, two grand nieces, Cassandra Dauski and her husband Dwayne of Valatie, and Renee Raffiani of Catskill, and seven great-great nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hanson was predeceased by her sister Dorothy Cain.

SAUGERTIES – Leroy S. Longendyke, 81, of Teestsel St., died Sunday, March 20, 2005 at the Benedictine Hospital, Kingston, NY, after a long illness.

Born Oct. 5, 1923 in Saugerties, he was the son of the late Sheldon and Susie Shultis Longendyke.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Army where he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal. A lifetime area resident, he was employed for more than 45 years at Alfa Laval in Poughkeepsie as a machinist.  For more than 45 years, he owned and operated Leroy Longendyke Gun Shop.  He was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Saugerties Fish and Game Club, the Cementon Sportsman Club, the Beaverkill Rod and Gun Club, Ulster Lodge #193 F&AM and he was a 60 year member of the Saugerties American Legion Post #72.  He was a former member of the Saugerties Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5034.

Survivors include his wife, the former Eleanor Sperl, with whom he recently celebrated his 57th wedding anniversary.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc., corner of John and Lafayette streets, Saugerties with the Rev. Karl Ostberg, pastor of the Saugerties Congregational Church.

Internment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery, Saugerties.

CAIRO – Sarina Marchese, 66, of Route 32, South Cairo, died Monday, March 21, 2005, at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, May 3, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Louise (Villarele) Lanzerotti.

Mrs. Marchese has been a resident of Cairo for the past two and a half years.  She is a member of the United Methodist Church of Cairo, she loved ceramics and collecting Precious Moments figurines.  During her early years of employment, she owned and operated Marchese Bakery in Staten Island.  While living in Cairo, she was employed as an aide for the Cairo Elementary School.  She was a great cook, an outstanding mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, Albert Marchese of 46 years of Cairo;  a son, Michael Marchese of Staten Island; a daughter, Christina Alfredo of Cairo; two sisters, Rosemary Lictro of Brooklyn, and Stephanie LaVarco of NJ; and four grandchildren, Joseph, Tommy James, Michael and Nicole.

Calling hours are Wednesday and Thursday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at The Richards Funeral Home, Bross St., Cairo.

Born June 10, 1952 in Hampton, NY, she was the daughter of Mary (Gilmore) and the late George Hilder.

Mrs. Deming was a homemaker, devoted wife and mother.  She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Wig and Post #8444.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Deming of Coxsackie; mother, Mary of Albany; children, Paul Hilder, Mary Vazquez and her husband Juan, and Vianna Hilder; step-children, Laura Deming and Robert and his wife Tammy Deming, all of Albany; sister of, Mary Loftus of Albany, Linda Boodrow and her husband Robert of Cohoes, Katherine Rodriquez and her husband William of Albany; sister-in-law, Helena Deming, Ida O’Dell and Marcia Ranalli; step-sister of Mildred Deming; 15 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are Saturday, 9 to 11 a.m. a the Sopris Funeral Home Inc., 11877 Route 9W, Coxsackie.  

The funeral service will follow calling hours at 11 a.m. Rev. Carol Lewis will officiate.

ATHENS – Ilse Gartner Fox, 91, died March 21, 2005 in North Kingston, NY.

She was born at home in Maywood, NJ, on April 26, 1913, and lived in Athens for over 50 years. 

Mrs. Fox worked for the YMCA in her hometown and later attended a program at Farleigh Dickinson College in journalism.

She worked for The Norman Oklahoma Gazette and later was a reporter of local news for over 25 years with The Daily Mail.

She served on The Athens Beautification Committee and also the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Restoration Committee.  In addition, she was an active member of the Athens Garden Club for many years.

She loved the research and study of historical events, especially in her beloved Town of Athens.  She collected many stories about the founding of the town, the architecture and included the shipbuilding industries, the foundry and local craftsman.

She is the wife of recently deceased Walter T. Fox of Athens, and is survived by her daughter Susan E. Fox of Wickford, RI, and two nieces, Jeanne Hicks and Donna Durand of Hurricane, WV, and a niece Aisha Cameron of VT.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday, March 25, 2005 at the First Reformed Church of Athens.

Private internment will take place on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 in the family plot of the Old Athens Rural Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Richards Funeral Home, 28 N. Vernon St., Athens.

FREEHOLD – Robert G. Peck, 88, of Freehold, died Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at the Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

Born in Coeymans Hollow, NY, April 2, 1916, he was the son of the late Sydney and Clara (Elmendorf) Peck.

Mr. Peck served his country in the US Army during World War II.  He was a bus mechanic for the RCS School District until his retirement in 1983.  He was a member of the Greenville Club, the Cairo Club and Greenville American Legion Post 291.  He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife Regina (Linz) Peck of Freehold; a son, Joseph Powazi and his wife Evelyn of Freehold; two grandchildren, Kristen Powazi and her fiance’ Thomas Uhill of Cornwallville, and Joseph Powazi of Cornwallville; two sisters, Marjorie Carpenter of Greenville, and Emma Hunt and her husband Raymond of Selkirk; a sister-in-law, Marion Peck of Glenmont; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Lincoln and Donald Peck and two sisters, Josephine Slingerland and Jeanette Cary.

Calling hours are Wednesday, 3 to 6 p.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 State Route 81, Greenville.

Funeral services will be Thursday 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Greenville.

As to his wishes, Mr. Peck will be cremated and burial will be in the Chestnut Lawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

HUNTER – John Edward Polivitis, 51, died March 20, 2005.

Born Oct. 12, 1953, he was a dearly beloved husband.  He is survived by his wife and caregiver Marie Polivitis; his mother, 94-year-old Margaret Povilitis; a sister, Mary Margaret Meagher; a brother, Anthony Povilitis, Ph.D; a niece, Charlotte Fiorito; and a nephew, Eric Fiorito.

John’s hobbies were speaking on his Ham radio, electronics, computers and Lionel trains.  He loved jazz and country-western music, watching pet shows on cable TV, old movies, “Star Trek”, “Cops”, “The Godfather”, Billy Graham and the New York Yankees.  He was a licensed and bonded locksmith and keymaker who installed alarm systems.

He last worked for the New York City Department of Sanitation.  He also was a safety officer at the Kingsboro Psychiatric Center.  He studied animal science.  He had a Dalmatian in his younger years, and when he was married he adopted a mixed collie-shepherd.

John loved his younger years traveling with his Aunt Bunnie, who recently died.  His relationships were outstanding.  He served as an auxiliary fireman.  He helped out groups that gave their time and service to communities.  He put his time and effort into communications in the fire department and helped in the Salvation Army Canteen giving out coffee and doughnuts to firefighters.  He enjoyed the company of other firefighting buffs.  He played Santa Claus and enjoyed fireworks.  His life was held in God’s hands.

He was truly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.

Calling hours at the Aston-Basagic Funeral Home, 7742 Main St., Hunter, will be held today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Prayers of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Haines Falls.  The Rev. Anthony Motta will officiate.  Internment services will take place in the spring.

ATHENS – Dominic F. Santeramo, 83, of Sleepy Hollow Road, Athens, died March 22, 2005, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany after a long illness.

He was born in Hoboken, NJ July 3, 1921, the son of the late John and Rose (Saggese) Santeramo.

During World War II, he served in the United States Army, receiving the Purple Heart for injuries he received in action.

During his employment years, he was employed by The Teamsters Union in New Jersey.

He has been an area resident since 1998 of Coxsackie, and he was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church of Coxsackie, also he was an avid gardener.

Survivors include his wife, Olive M. (Hinman) Santeramo of Sleepy Hollow; a son, Edward of Maine, a step-daughter, Linda Sheehan of NJ, two brothers, Ralph of CA, and Joseph of PA, a sister, Lee Medick of NJ, and two grandsons, Jonathan and Nathan, both of ME.

Private calling hours will take place at the W.C. Brady’s Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie, on Thursday with private cremation to follow at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands.

COXSACKIE – Margaret Mary Donovan, 90, died March 22, at her home in Coxsackie.

She was born on Jan. 20, 1915 in New York City, the daughter of the late James A. and Elizabeth Hoctor Hussey.

Prior to her retirement, she was a secretary to the head of the Physician’s Department at Fordham University.

She was the wife of the late Joseph Donovan, sister of the late Edwin, Frank and James Hussey and Elizabeth Hussey Cleary.

Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Marge Donovan of VA and Margaret Hussey of Coxsackie.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She leaves many other friends and neighbors who will miss her and to whom she had exhibited generosity, hospitality, humor and love.

Calling hours will be 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at the W.C. Brady’s Sons Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Church, Coxsackie with Rev. Fr. J. Moyna, the celebrant.

CATSKILL – Mabel Cora Yannone, 86, of Catskill, died Tuesday, March 22, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany where she had been a patient overnight.

Mrs. Yannone was born in Gilboa on may 18, 1918 to the late Henry and Jesse Holcomb Spalding.

She married Julian Yannone on Sept. 26, 1946 and was employed by the former Atlanta Mills in Catskill as a floor lady for 42 years.

She and her husband are both faithful communicants of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church.

Mrs. Yannone is survived by her husband of 58 years “Jake” Yannone of Catskill, and their daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Betty) Townley, Sr. of Athens; two grandchildren: Gerald Townley Jr. of Ravena and Linda Hall of Albany; seven great-grandchildren: Lindsay Hall, Leigha Hall, Logan Hall, Shayla Townley, Kiernan Townley, Larissa Townley and Jarred Townley; two sisters, Iva Siddal of Hunter and Lois Christiane of Catskill, a brother, Gordon Spalding of Schenectady as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Yannone was predeceased by four sisters: Glenda Spalding, Gladys Van Paris, Frieda Schufelt, and Gertrude Tompkins in addition to four brothers: Lloyd, Clude, Ken and Ross Spalding.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, in the Remembrance Chapel of the funeral home.

CAIRO – Allard R. Sherman, 64, died Thursday, March 24, 2005 at home with his family by his side.

He was born Oct. 27, 1940 in Red Hook.

He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Fleet aboard the U.S.S. Topeka.

Mr. Sherman lived in Windham and Ghent for many years.  He was a general contractor.  He and his family also ran a dairy farm in Cobleskill.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Ostrander Sherman; two sons, Larry Sherman of Middleburgh and Scott Sherman of Cairo; a daughter, Heather Sherman of Cairo; his mother, Hazel McKay of Germantown; a sister, Karen Pratt of Germantown; two nephews, Donald Eaton of Germantown and Justin Eaton of Philmont; a niece, Faith Pratt of Germantown, and a nephew, Joel Sutch of Prattsville.  Allie was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend a celebration of his life on Wednesday, March 30, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Richards Funeral Home, Bross Street, Cairo.

Private cremation took place at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands.

CATSKILL - Stephen C. Gentile, 88, of 21 Allen Street, Catskill, died Wednesday evening, March 23, 2005 at Columbia-Greene Long Term Care in Catskill, where he had been a patient since June, 2001, from complications from Alzheimer’s Disease.

He was born June 10, 1916, in Catskill, the son of the late Camillo and Mariana (DeLuca) Gentile.

Mr. Gentile attended St. Patrick’s Academy in Catskill.  He was a well known area bass and drums musician for approximately 50 years, having played in various jazz and swing bands at resort facilities in the Catskills.

He was  successful businessman for 45 years having owned and operated Elite Dry Cleaners and Tailors in Catskill and Esquire Tailor Shop in Hudson prior to his retirement in 1985.

Survivors include his wife of over 35 years, Mrs. Helen (Yatsko) Gentile of Catskill; a brother, Thomas Gentile and wife Rosemary, both of Catskill; one niece; two nephews; and several cousins.

Mr. Gentile was predeceased by a brother, Patrick Gentile.

There are no calling hours.

Graveside funeral services at the Catskill Rural Cemetery will be private at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Columbia-Greene Long Term Patient Recreation Fund, 161 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

RAVENA – Seana Marie Hazelton, 16, of Ravena, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005 after a short illness.

Seana was born in Albany and has lived in Ravena all her life.  She was a junior at Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society, played on the volleyball team, softball team, and participated in many school activities.

She loved all her many friends and enjoyed spending time with them.

Survivors include her mother Mary Hazelton-Lisa; father, John Sickles; and stepfather Jody Lisa; siblings Joseph and Zachary Lisa.  She is the grand-daughter of Irene Hazelton, Sonny and Rose Sickles and Virginia Pearson, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, classmates, faculty and coaches.

Seana was also loved by the Sterantino family.

WINDHAM – Lucy Stavroulakis, 95, of Windham, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta, NY.

Born June 16, 1911 in Malta, she was the daughter of the late Mario and Despina Messuit.

Mrs. Stavroulakis moved to Windham from the Bronx in 1992.  She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Eva Stavroulakis; grandchildren, George and his wife Cindy Tortorelis, Tony Albanopooulos, Lucy Orfanos, and Tony Makridakis; great-grandson, Seth Colin Mahoney.

She was predeceased by her husband, Nicholas; daughter, Mary Tortorelis; and sisters, Providence Comas and Mary Konnon.

HUDSON – Anna Mae Miedreich, 76, of Route 9, Hudson, died suddenly from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in the Town of Catskill.

She was born April 16, 1928 in Brooklyn, the daughter of the late Leo and Tillie (Will) Karl.

Ms. Miedreich was an employee of the New York State Department of Correctional Services in Hudson prior to her retirement.

She was a communicant at Holy Name of Jesus Church in West Palm Beach, FL and a member of the Greenport Garden Club.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne Miedreich of West Palm Beach, FL and Craig Miedreich of Palenville; a brother, Leo Karl of East Islip, Long Island; a daughter-in-law Julie Miedreich of Palenville, and one grandson, Jeremy Miedreich of Palenville.

Ms. Miedreich was predeceased by a son, Jerry Miedreich Jr. on June 3, 1977.

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church, Route 32A in Palenville.  Father Bonaventure Bionda, OFM, will be officiating.

Spring internment will be in the Palenville Cemetery.

HAINES FALLS – Ingveig Marie Abrahamsen, 76, Haines Falls, died Saturday, March 26 at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston where she had been a patient.

Mrs. Abrahamsen was born on the island of Malaya in Norway on Jan. 29, 1929 to the late Anton and Anna Olsen.

One of nine children, she rowed to school on the mainland in warm weather and skated over during the winter.

She immigrated to the United States in 1934 and became the wife of the late Arnold Abrahamsen, also a native of Norway.  She was employed at Villaggio Italia in Haines Falls as an executive housekeeper for 35 years.

Having grown up on an island, she was a great water enthusiast who enjoyed boating and deep sea fishing.  As an avid nature lover, she dedicated much of her time caring for our houseplants, garden, bird-watching and tending the neighborhood wildlife.  Her hobbies also included sewing, knitting and embroidery.

Her main objective in life was caring for her family and friends and was ever ready to be helpful.  She was a great mom and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her five children: Anne Marie Abrahamsen-Reese of Saugerties, Arnold Abrahamsen of Hopewell Junction, Robert Abrahamsen of Haines Falls, Edwin Abrahamsen of Tannersville, and John Abrahamsen of Plattekill, son-in-law, Dennis Reese of Saugerties; four daughters-in-law; Debbie Abrahamsen of Hopewell Junction, Denise Abrahamsen of Haines Falls, Patsy Abrahamsen of Tannersville, and Mary Abrahamsen of Plattekill; eight grandchildren: Christopher, Jason, Marilla, Ryan, Mary, Lauren, Erica, and Kyle Abrahamsen; in addition to her siblings, nieces and nephews in Norway, her beloved friend and caregiver, Veronica Moratti of Saugerties.

Mrs. Abrahamsen was predeceased by her husband Arnold Abrahamsen on May 10, 1979.

A celebration of her life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at the home of Edwin Abrahamsen, 102 Route 23C, Tannersville.

RAVENA – Oscar H. Boomer, 81, of Ravena, died Saturday, March 26, 2005 at St. Peter’s Hospital.

Mr. Boomer was born and lived in Ravena all his life.

He owned and operated Boomer’s Garage since 1946.  He was a member of the Congregational Christian Church in Ravena, a life member of the Coeymans Hollow Fire Co., the NRA and the Northeast Stock Car Old Timers Club.

Survivors include his children Carolyn “Carly” (Alvah) Crewell, Cynthia A. McMullen, Walter O. Boomer, and Daniel A. (Robin) Boomer; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Boomer was predeceased by his wife June Dixon Boomer, brothers Asa and Ray Boomer and an infant sister.

TANNERSVILLE – Donald Curtis, 73, of Tannersville, died Sunday, March 27, 2005, at the Kingston City Hospital, Kingston, NY.

Born July 22, 1931 in Tannersville, he was the son of Newton and Eva Speilman Curtis.

Mr. Curtis worked in the Park Service for Onteora Park.

Survivors include his sisters, June Lawrence and Evelyn Johnson of Tannersville, Elizabeth Higgins of Hunter and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by brothers, Henry Curtis in 1958, James Curtis in 1959, Clayton Curtis in 1990, Kenneth Curtis in 2002, and his mother, Eva Curtis in 1994.

COXSACKIE – Nancy Lee Gyssels, 60, of Amherst, NY, formerly of Coxsackie, died March 25, 2005 a the Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Buffalo, after complications due to an automobile accident.

She was born in Saugerties, Nov. 16, 1944, and was the daughter of Edward and Dorothy (Lucas) Forman of West Coxsackie.

At the time of her death, she was a teacher for 37 years at the Amherst School System.

She had obtained her Master’s Degree for the last 20 years.  She also owned and operated a small gift shop in Amherst.

When she resided in Coxsackie, she made her home on Route 9W and was also a past member of the First Reformed Church of Coxsackie.

Besides her parents, she is survived by her husband Cornelius Gyssels of Amherst, NY.

Private cremation services took place March 28 in Buffalo.

A graveside service with her cremains will take place at a later date in the family plot of the Chestnut Lawn Cemetery in New Baltimore.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the W.C. Brady’s Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie.

Retired CEO of Amos Post Oil Co.

MIAMI, FL – Lloyd Avery Newcombe, died March 24, 2005 at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

A native of Catskill, he was  a full-time resident of Ocean Reef in Key Largo, FL, since 1983.

He was a graduate of Babson Business College.

Mr. Newcombe was the retired CEO of the Amos Post Oil Co.  His other business interests include Newcombe Petroleum, Newcombe Cadillac, at one time, the oldest Cadillac dealership in the United States, the Catskill Travel Agency, Catskill Marina and Harbor Lights Restaurant.

He served in the New York State Senate, was chair of the Hudson River Valley Commission and was responsible for the restoration of the lighthouses on the Hudson River.

He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a flight instructor.  He was an avid boater and golfer.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Karen McRorey Newcombe, one son, Geoffrey, two daughters, Pamela and Stephanie, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and his brother Amos.

Mr. Newcombe was predeceased by his son Austin.

Services and entombment will be held in Fredericksburg, VA.

Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service Fredericksburg Chapel is handling the arrangements.

He served his country in the United States Navy from 1958-1962.

HUNTER – Grace Chalmers Strauss of Hunter, died March 23, 2005, at the Benedictine Hospital in Kingston.

Born January 28, 1912 in New York City, she was the daughter of John S. and Bertha Kolze Chalmers.

Mrs. Strauss was a homemaker.  Formerly of Scarsdale, NY, she moved to Hunter in 1979.  She was a n avid golfer with membership in the Whiporwill Golf Club in Chapaqua, Mt. Kisco Golf and Country Club, championships six times and Inverness and Windham Golf Clubs, and the Mountain Top Historical Society.

Survivors include a daughter, Elaine S. Wethe of Whittier, CA.; a beloved constant companion, Marie Belenko; three grandchildren, William Weethe, James D. Weethe, and Cynthia A. Gailit; five great-grandchildren, James Patrick Weethe, Jonathan William Weethe, Anne Marie Weethe, Mary Clare Weethe, George Hartshorne; and several nieces and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Otto W. Strauss June 8, 1992, to whom she was married 56 years.

Calling hours are Wednesday 7 to 9 p.m. at the Aston-Basagic Funeral Home, 7742 Main St., Hunter.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, 10 a.m. at the funeral home.  Officiating will be the Rev. Karen Monk.

Entombment will be in the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, NY.

Memorial donations may be made to the Kaaterskill United Methodist Church.
