DOROTHY L. DOLAN
MIAMI, FLORIDA---Dorothy L. Dolan,
85, formerly of Tannersville and Hunter, died in Miami, Florida on Dec. 29. 2003
after a long illness.
Her father was Robert E. Lackey of
Tannersville, whose grandfather Michael Lackey, Sr. had settled in Hunter
Township in the 1830s. He gave his baby daughter the nickname “Peaches” for
her “peaches and cream” complexion, and to her frequent embarrassment it was
used throughout her life by family and old friends. A cherished memento of
childhood visits to Caddam Hill, the Onteora Park residence of Maude Adams, is a
photograph of the actress in costume, signed to “Peaches with love from Peter
Pan”.
In 1936, she married Leo E.
“Cozy” Dolan of Hunter, youngest son of Lizzie Lackey Dolan (twin sister of
Michael Lackey, Jr.) and Michael B. Dolan (for whom Dolan’s Lake is named). As
the young wife of the ranger at North Lake State Park, she set up housekeeping
in a log cabin.
By about 1940 the family was living
in Hunter. They left the Catskills, but she returned from Manhattan to Catskill
Memorial for the birth of her second child, and there were frequent visits it
the Dolans and to her aunts Clara Lackey and Mary Lackey Doyle, wife of Judd B.
“Slow Joe” Doyle, record-setting pitcher for the NY Highlanders (now the
Yankees).
After a career with the New York
State Civil Defense Commission and then as a senior Surrogate’s Court Clerk in
the Bronx, she retired and moved to Miami Beach in 1980. She traveled
extensively, riding on donkeys in Greece and in feluccas in Egypt, but she
claimed as her most daring adventure the ride she’d taken in 1954 as a
passenger of the then 63 year-old and newly licensed pilot Clara Lackey, aka
“the Amelia Earhart of Tannersville”.
She is survived by two daughters,
Sister Clare Therese, O.P. of the Dominican Sisters of Nashville, TN and Peggy
A. Dolan of Miami FL; by a cousin Walter D. Doyle of Saratoga Springs, NY and by
several Dolan and Lackey cousins of younger generations.
On January 3, 2004, in accordance
