CATSKILL---Harvey Clifford Young, 90, of Catskill, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002 at his residence following a long illness. Born Oct. 15, 1911 in Albany, he was the son of the late Clifford M. Young and Anna M. Dillenback Yount. He moved to Catskill in 1937 after graduating from Albany High School and Albany Business College. He was a veteran of World War 11 and a member of the Honeyford Memorial Post 110 American Legion. Mr. Young was the director and secretary of Commercial Mutual Insurance Company on Main Street in Catskill for many years and a faithful parishioner of St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
Survivors include a grandson, Tylor Young of Warner, NH, and Raquel Young, a grand daughter. Mr. Young was predeceased by his wife, Murial E. Sawyer Young on Nov. 23, 1996, in addition to his brother, Arthur D. Young.
Calling hours will be 7-9 pm Sunday and at 10 am on Monday prior to services at St. Luke's at Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home , 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am on Monday, March 4, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on William Street, with the Rev. Michael I. Gorchov, Rector, officiating. Interment will follow in the Catskill Rural Cemetery.

JANE E. ABBATE

Jane E. Abbate, 95, of Fairground Apartments, Cairo, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at the Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, following a long illness. Mrs. Abbate was born in New York City on Jan. 3, 1907, the daughter of the late Thomas and Victoria Maniscalo Magritta. An area resident since 1958, Mrs. Abbate was a well known artist in her time.
Surviving are two daughters, Irene Abbate of New Jersey and Doris Abbate of Florida; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be 10-11 am Monday, an hour before the funeral services, at the Richards Funeral Home, 383 Bross St., Cairo. The Rev. J. Nunan, pastor of the Sacred Heart Church, Cairo will officiate. Mrs. Abbate's interment will follow in the Catskill Cemetery, in a plot next to her late husband, Salvatore Abbate.

LEEDS---Martha A. Brodersen, 87, of Route 23B, Leeds, died Saturday, March 2, 2002 at Columbia Memorial Hospital. She was born June 20, 1914 in Bremen, Germany. Mrs. Brodersen attended the Zion Lutheran Church in Athens, She enjoyed bowling and being with her grandchildren. Formerly of Sr. Alban's, Queens, she owned and operated a German delicatessen on Colfax Street with her husband, Hans Brodersen, who predeceased her on Jan. 15, 1952. Mrs. Brodersen had been a Leeds area resident since November, 1949.
Survivors include a daughter Diane and Hans (John) Schmidt of Leeds; four grandsons, Richard (Jaqueline) Schmidt and their son Eric all of Catskill, Alisha and Joanna Schmidt, both of Leeds. Two great grandsons, Hans and Donald Schmidt, both of Catskill and two nieces. Mrs. Brodersen was predeceased by three brothers, John Thoden, Henry Thoden and Herman Thoden and two sisters, Meta Thoden and Anna Wellbrock.
Calling hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 p, Tuesday at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill. Private interment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery, Kew Gardens, NY.

CATSKILL---Earl Perry Crandall, 64, of Catskill, died suddenly Saturday, March 2, 2002 at his residence. Born Dec. 27, 1937 in Norwich, CT, he was the son of the late Frederick and Arvilla Kenfield Crandall. Mr. Crandall was raised in Charlestown, RI, graduated from high school, earned his Bachelor's Degree in Science at Rhode Island and completed his Master's Degree in New York. He was head of the Science Department at Catskill High School where he taught Earth Science and Chemistry until his retirement. An avid genealogist, he was the proud founder of the Crandall Family Association and member of the Geer, Palmer, and Miner Family Association. Mr. Crandall was the past vice president of the Empire State Society of the sons of the American Revolution and a member of the Descendents of the Mayflower as well as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day saints, Claverack branch. Having taught for more than 30 years, he was a member of the New York State Teacher's Union.
Survivors include his brother, David Crandall; his sister, Norma Gaudlap; his niece, Jeanette Smith and his grand niece, Jaqueline Smith all of Rhode Island; and Bryan W. Schloss of Catskill, his beloved friend and companion of more than 25 years.
Calling hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 pm Monday at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill. Services will be conducted 11 am Tuesday, March 5 at the funeral home. Additional services will be held Thursday in Rhode Island at the Buckler & Johnson Funeral Home with private cremation being conducted there on Friday.

CLIMAX---John P. Consoli, 73, of Route 26, Climax, died Sunday March 3, 2002 at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, after a long illness. Born March 17, 1928 in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Pasquale and Antoinette Forgione Consoli. Mr. Consoli had been an area resident since 1960. He was a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus 458 of Coxsackie and a fourth degree member of the Albany Knights of Columbus. He was also a communicant of St. Mary's Church of Coxsackie and gave numerous lectures to young people on the dangers of smoking. He was very active in the Better Breathers Association of New York and had a very outgoing personality. Prior to his retirement he was employed by the Lawson Industrial Products Co. of New Jersey.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Timchak Consoli of Climax; a son John Consoli, Jr. of Purling; two daughters, Patricia Towhill of Rhode Island and Julia Hepperle of Cairo; a brother; Joseph Consoli of Congress, NY; a sister, Camilla Petaros of Georgia; three grandchildren, Angela and Andrea Consoli and Lily Hepperle.
Calling hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 pm Tuesday at the W. C. Brady & Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9 am Wednesday at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church at the intersection of Mansion St. and Washington Avenue, Village of Coxsackie. The Rev. John Moyna will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the family plot of St. Mary's Parish Cemetery.

Famed for homemade baking
GREENVILLE---Ethel Moore, 81, of Medusa, died Sunday, March 3, 2002 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Born April 30, 1920 in Westerlo, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Effie Birch Clickman. Mrs. Moore was a lifelong homemaker but also had time to drive a feeder line for the Greenville Central School for more than 20 years. She also catered the Durham Auction Barn for several years and was famous for her homemade baking, especially her wedding cakes. She also had time to operate her gift shop, "Ethel's Trash and Treasures." Above all she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Survivors include two sons, James (Beverly) Moore of Medusa and Wesley (Cindy) Moore of Medusa, three grandchildren, James, Melissa and Kristy Moore; a sister, Olive Fancher of Westerlo, and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Moore was predeceased by her husband, Ivan Moore, former Town of Durham Highway Superintendent, in 1995, a son, Wayne Moore, a brother, Fred Clickman and a sister Mary Moore.
Services will be 8:30 pm Tuesday from the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville. Calling hours will be 7-8:30 pm Tuesday at the funeral home prior to the service. Interment will be 11 am Wednesday in the Potter Hollow Cemetery.

CATSKILL---Daniel H. Pickens, 93, of 10 Landon Ave., Catskill, died Saturday, March 2, 2002 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson. Born Sept. 11, 1908 in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Edward and Ellen O'Rourke Pickens. Mr. Pickens served in the US Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was an officer with the New York State Department of Corrections prior to his retirement in 1975. He was a member of the Catskill Masonic Lodge 468 and Sullivan-Teator VFW Post 770.
Survivors include his wife of more than 58 years, Regina Balfe Pickens of Catskill; three sons, Daniel J. Pickens of Slingerlands, Gregory Pickens if Kinderhook and Richard (Dorothy) Pickens of Leeds; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Pickens was predeceased by two brothers, Donald and Joseph Pickens and a sister, Evelyn O'Rourke.
Services will be conducted 11:15 am Tuesday at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill, Pastor John J. Murphy of St. Patrick's Church of Catskill will be officiating. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Catskill.

NEW BALTIMORE---Gertrude Louise Swezey, 87, of Swezey Road, New Baltimore, died Sunday March 3, 2002, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born Oct. 17, 1914 in Aberdeen, Wash., she was the daughter of the late Charles F. and Mable F. Flynn Cork. Mrs. Swezey moved to Coxsackie as a child. She married Norton H. Swezey on March 17, 1941 at Christ Episcopal Church, Coxsackie. Mr. Swezey died Jan. 30, 2002. Together with her husband she owned and operated the family farm. She was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church, Coxsackie.
Survivors include two daughters, Gertrude Carol (Edward) Hoerning of Gastonia, NC, and Frances Elizabeth (Jeffrey) Wasson of Coxsackie; four grandchildren, Nancy (Kent) Brown of Pittsboro, NC, Thomas (Ann) Hoerning of Charlotte, NC, Timothy (Linda) Mallon of Coxsackie and Rosemary (Joseph) Hoffman of Coxsackie. She is also survived by a grand-daughter in law, Jennifer Hoerning of Monroe, NC, and great grandchildren, Laura Hoerning of Charlotte, NC, Olivia Grace Hoern ing of Monroe, NC, Elizabeth, Shannon and Rebecca Mallon, Nathaniel and Timothy Hoffman, all of Coxsackie; and a step great-grandson, Ryan Matson of West Coxsackie.
Mrs. Swezey was predeceased by a grandson, Robert Hoerning on Sept. 21, 2001.

WEST COXSACKIE---Leonard McStine Sr., 75, of Bethany Village, West Coxsackie and formerly of Route 145, East Durham, died Monday, March 4, 2002 after a long illness. He was born in New York City on March 27, 1926, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. McStine. Prior to his retirement, Mr. McStine was a truck driver and drove for many businesses in the area. During World War II he served in the US Merchant Marines. He had been an area resident for many years and loved to socialize with his friends. Also, he loved to feed geese and ducks.
Mr. McStine is survived by his second wife, Margaret (Peggy) A. Prusky McStine; a son. David W. McStine of Medusa; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Sally McStine. A private cremation took place on Tuesday at the Wiltwyck Crematory, Kingston.

CATSKILL---Thelma M. Dauwel, 86, former Athens native, and Catskill resident, died Monday, March 4, 2002 at the Briar Nursing Home in Ronceverte, W. VA. Mrs. Dauwel was born March 12, 1915 in Athens, daughter of the late Raymond and Naomi Hallenbeck Quick. She had been a resident of West Virginia since 1990. With her husband, George C. Dauwel Sr., Mrs Dauwel owned and operated George's Superette Store in Athens for 35 years until her retirement in 1968. She was a member and past president of the Business and Professional Women of Greene County.
Surviving are a son, George C. Jr. and Joyce Dauwel of Caldwell, W. VA; a daughter, Jeanne and John George of Clifton Park; a sister, Ruth Vardabash of Albany; four grandchildren, Jason George and John Ryan George, both of Clifton Park. and G. Conrad Dauwel III and Corey Dauwel, both of Caldwell, W. VA; and a great granddaughter, Chloe Dauwel of Caldwell, W. VA.
She was predeceased by her husband, George C. Dauwel, Sr.

Surviving are her seven children, Carlotta Morris of Medusa, Grant Hahne of Mims, FL, Bruce Hahne of San Francisco, CA, Carl Hahne of Medusa, Nadine Hahne of Dover Plains, Britta Lovegrove of Berne and Neil Hahne of Cairo; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

CATSKILL---A memorial service for Dorothy Sieber, 75, will be 10 am today at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 50 William St. Catskill with the Rev. Michael I. Gorchov officiating. Ms. Sieber died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at the Sunrest Nursing Home in Port Jefferson. Long Island. She was born March 8, 1926 in Jamaica, Queens, daughter of the late Harry and Elizabeth Sieber.
Ms. Sieber enjoyed crocheting and earned an income from her work while living at adult and nursing homes. She also sang in the choir of the Lutheran Church.
Surviving are her brother, Wiliam H. (Eileen A.) Sieber, of Catskill; brother Fred Sieber of Sharon Springs, and sister Elizabeth (William) Cahill, of Glendale. She was predeceased by her nephew, Peter Gerard Sieber.

FREEHOLD---Joseph A. Staunch Sr., 86, of Freehold, died Friday, March 8, 2002. Born Feb. 29, 1916 in Great Neck, NY., he was the son of the late Joseph and Agnes (Kuptunas) Staunch. Mr. Staunch was a veteran of World War 11, serving in the United States Army. He retired from the New York State Department of Transportation, having worked out of the Cairo department. A member of the Greenville American Legion Post 291, he was also a former member of the Freehold Vol. Fire Company and when he was able enjoyed bowling.
Survivors include his wife Murial (Stotesbury) Staunch; a son, Joseph (Michelle) Staunch; three daughters, Linda (Duncan) Macpherson, Sally and Bonnie Staunch; eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren, three sisters and a brother.

Born Dec. 21, 1934 in Hamburg, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Albertus and Christine (Tamm) Decker. Formerly of East Northport, Mrs. O'Brien had been a Greenville area resident since 1996.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph J. O'Brien of Greenville; two daughters, Margaret O. Rogers of Galway and Susan O'Brien-Mroczk of Hyde Park; a sister, Marlene Grill of Lubeck, Germany; and a brother, Will Decker of Hawley, PA. Mrs. O'Brien was predeceased by two sisters, Hilda Rebhn and Elfriede Czech.

HUNTER---Alexander Shumylo, 79, of Lexington died Monday March 11, 2002 at Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill. Born March 17, 1922 in Manasirok, Ukraine, he was the son of the late Roman and Sonia Paraskieva Shumylo. Mr. Shumylo was the co-owner of the Lexington Hotel since 1962. He was a member of the Town of Lexington Fire Co. and active in many Ukrainian and American organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Maria Skulbid Shumylo of Lexington; a son, Antoni Shumylo of Lexington; a sister in Ukraine; and four grandchildren, Roman, Natalie, Lessia and Jerry Shumylo.
Calling hours will be 7-9 pm Thursday at the Aston Basagic Funeral Home, 6424 Main St. Hunter. The Town of Lexington Fire Co. will conduct a service at 8 pm at the funeral home. A mass will be celebrated 11 am Friday at St. John the Baptist Ukraine Catholic Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Lura Godenciuc. Interment will follow at the Lexington Village Cemetery.

Caroline Clara Atwood, 87, of Hunt Road, Hillsdale, died Thursday, March 14, 2002 at the Pine Haven Home in Philmont. She was born Sep. 29, 1914 in Stottsville, daughter of the late Henry Sr. and Clara (Kohlmier) Fitting. She married George E. Atwood Sr. in 1934, he preceded her in 1976. A longtime resident, Mrs. Atwood had been self-employed in the domestic home care field. She was a member of the Harlemville Emanuel Lutheran Church and a member of the former Hillsdale Grange.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Katt of Palenville; two sons, Harold Atwood of Chandler, AZ and George Atwood of Hillsdale; four sisters, Elizabeth Andrezcsik and Margaret Molnar both of Hudson, Elsie Glynn of Crarysville, and Marie Shook of West Ghent; two brothers, John Fitting of Columbiaville and Christopher Fitting of Hudson. Also, nine grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Henry Fitting, Jr.

GHENT---Kathleen Brady, 92, formerly of Bethany Village, West Coxsackie, and Eastview Garden Apartments, Cairo, died March 14, 2002 at Green Manor Nursing Home, Ghent, where she had been a resident since 1999. Born November 22, 1909 in County Kerry, Ireland, she was the daughter of the late John and Ann McGillicuddy McCarthy. She has been an area resident for over fifty years. She and her late husband operated Brady's Tavern on Route 23 in South Durham for 27 years.
She is survived by a niece, Breda Fleming of Portchester and a nephew, Monsgn. Patrick J. O'Shea of San Francisco. Besides her husband, she is predeceased by her sister Mary Fay.
Calling hours will be Monday, March 18 at the W. C. Brady's & Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion Street, Coxsackie from 8 to 9 am. Mass of the Resurection will be celebrated 9 am Monday at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Coxsackie. Rev. Fr. John Moyne will be the celebrant. Interment will follow next to her late husband, Thomas, in the family plot of St. Mary's Parish Cemetery, Coxsackie.

Jo Ann Stearns, 41, a former stock clerk at the Jamesway in Catskill, died Friday, March 15, 2002 at her residence in Athens, following a long illness. She is survived by sons, Richard Winchester, Jason Stratta, Shawn Bolvion; a daughter, Shannon Gaitley; sisters, Janet Goergen and Debbie Auiclaire; brothers, Chuck Goergen and Lee Goergen; fiance', Anthony Gene Ferro; and best friend Anita Pack.

Born Jan. 13, 1923 in Queens, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Elvira Ciccone Parisi. Mrs. Algoxxine was formerly a beautician for over 50 years and a member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church of Cairo. Her hobbies included crafts, sewing and cooking.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy A. and Raymond Houghtaling of Freehold; a son, Frank J. and Shirley Algozzine of Freehold; one brother, Charles Parisi of Cairo; two sisters, Corinne Rasmussen of Greenville and Gloria Ferrier of Earlton; four grandchildren, Raymond and Michael Houghtaling and Keith and Timothy Algozzine, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Algozzine was predeceased by three sisters, Marie Mattana, Elsie Nocella and Aida Ferreri.

Born March 28, 1932 in Corona, NY, he was the son of Anthony and Benedetta Bologna Mangano. Mr. Mangano and his wife lived in Lexington for 13 1/2 years and owned the Echo Valley Motel. He enjoyed hunting.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years Constance Bartlett Mangano, his children; daughter Jeanne Sackaris; sons, Anthony and Michael Mangano; brother, Thomas Mangano and sisters, Gerrie Spinelli, Alice Salvino and Virginia Schank; grandson, Joseph Sackaris.

She was born in Coxsackie Sep. 4, 1938 and was the daughter of the late Haywood and Lillian Margaret VanBurgen Irvis. She was a lifetime member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church of Coxsackie, and also a member of the Missionary Society of the church. She was a past employee of the NYS Dept. of Tax and Finance, and was also a day care mother.

CAIRO---Henry J. Andersen, 79, of Rolling Meadow Road, Cairo, died Sunday, March 17, 2002 at his residence after a long illness. He was born Oct. 15, 1922 in Norway, and was the son of the late Hamrick and Kristine Anderson. During his years of employment, Mr. Andersen was a tugboat engineer in New York City, Also, he had a radiant heat business in Cairo.
He was a past president of the Cairo Rotary Club and also was a lifetime member of the club. He was also an active member of the Sons of Norway, which started in Cairo. He was a longtime member member of the Resurection Lutheran Church in Cairo and also a member of the Shriners Lodge in Brooklyn.
Surviving are three sons, Kenny Anderson, of Connecticut, and Karl Thorkildsem and Lloyd Andersen of Florida; stepson, Victor Stephens of Pennsylvania; two daughters; Lila Lieb of Virginia and Ava Yoder of Tennessee; sister, Tilly Sjo of Norway; 10 grandchildren, Aubrey and Hayley Anderson of Connecticut, Sara, Aaron and Taylor Leib of Virginia, Alex, Zack, Jacob and Luke Andersen of Florida, and Emily Yoder of Tennessee.
Besides his parents, Mr. Andersen was predeceased by a son, Hank Andersen.

She was born July 15, 1908 in Plymouth, PA, the 14th child of Michael and Marie Jarosak. All have predeceased her. Mrs. Bogdan lived at various times in Long Island, Fairmont Spring, PA, Lakeland, FL, Sarasota, FL, and Port Charlotte, FL. She was a devoted mother and housewife.
Surviving are a daughter, Virginia (J. Eugene) Morrison; daughter-in-law, Arlene Jarosak; grandchildren, Maryanne Morrison and Dawn and Tom Johannsen, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and siblings, she was predeceased by her son, Gerald Jarosak.

He was an engineer who spent many years working at the Catskill Hospital and the Child's Hospital in Albany prior ro moving to Florida.

HAINES FALLS---Charles P. Memhard, 71, of Haines Falls, died Monday, March 18, 2002. Mr. Memhard served four years in the US Air Force during the Korean War and went on to receive a BA degree from St. Lawrence University. He retired after working 30 years in sales and marketing with Eastman Kodak Co. He was active with the local mountaintop community, serving as a member of the Rip Van Winkle Lions Club, president of the Twilight Park Association, vice president of the Greene County Planning Board, chairman of the Town of Hunter Planning Board and supervisor of the Town of Hunter. Mr. Memhard served as a member of the Advisory Board of the Greene County Aging Services Foundation. A great library advocate, Mr. Memhard most recently served as president of the Mid-Hudson Library System (a central library system serving libraries in Greene, Columbia, Ulster, Putnam and Dutchess counties.) He also served on the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for Hudson Valley Libraries. At his death, he was chairman of the Development Committee of the Haines Falls Library with intentions to seek funds to build a new library.
Surviving are his wife, Lila; son and daughter, Russell and Ann Memhard; and grandchildren, Alexandra and Nicholas Memhard. A memorial service will be held in May at a date to be announced.

CATSKILL---Robert O'Rourke, 72, of Catskill and formerly of Earlton, died on Sunday, March 17, 2002, at his home. He was born in Newark, NJ on Feb. 1, 1930, the son of the late John and Elizabeth McDonald O'Rourke.
Mr. O'Rourke is survived by his wife, Marie Priore O'Rourke, whom he married on June 25, 1977. He was a member of the New York Newspaper Pressmen's Union No. 2 and had been employed by the New York Times. Mr. O'Rourke was a resident of Earlton for 23 years, moving to Greene County from Queens. He and his wife owned Honey Hollow Lake Resort in Earlton.
Mr. O'Rourke was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Queens.
Surviving are his children, Beatrice Sarter of Stamford and Rosemarie Norman and Margaret Bame of Earlton; his brother, Michael of Florida and two sisters, Rosemary Williams of Long Island and Betty Ann Ketchum of Queens and 10 grandchildren. Mr. O'Rourke was predeceased by two brothers, Edward and Jack O'Rourke.
There will be no calling hours. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Pastor John Murphy on Saturday, March 23 at 9:45 am at St. Patrick's Church, 157 Bridge Street, Catskill. Private interment will be at Long Island National Cemetery, Pinelawn, L. I. at the convenience of the family.

Mrs. McDonald was a reporter with the Daily Mail in Catskill, and The Greenville Local. She was an active member of the community, Life Member of the National Republican Committee, Greenville Republican Club, Greenville American Legion Post No. 291 Ladies Auxilliary, Clematis Garden Club, the Advisory Council of the Department for the Aging, Greenville Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxilliary, Golden Years Club AARP and the Altar Rosary Society at St. John the Baptist Church. She also served as the Town of Greenville Assessor.

CATSKILL---Elizabeth M. Marsh, 94, of Catskill died Saturday, March 23, at Columbia Memorial Hospital's Hospice Unit, where she had been a patient. Born Feb. 14, 1908 on Bronson Street, Catskill, she was the daughter of the late John and Marie Anunziata Casaregola Marsh.
Miss Marsh attended St. Patrick's Academy and was a seamstress at the former Atlanta Knitting Mills in Catskill. She was a faithful parishioner of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church and a member of the Rosary Altar Society. One of her most treasured memories was a pilgrimage she made on Nov. 10, 1930 with her father in Rome where they visited the Catacombs and had an audience with Pope Pius XI.
Survivors include two half brothers, Peter Marsh of Catskill, and Erasmo Marsh of Catskill; nieces, Marie Haines of Westkill and Catherine Decker of Westkill, Theresa DiMasi of Copco Beach, Fl, Josephine Glennon of Albany; five nephews, John Marsh and Joseph Marsh both of Grand Gorge; Larry Macera of Catskill; Joseph Owen Marsh of Poughkeepsie; Christopher Marsh, as well as several great great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
Miss Marsh was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Joseph Marsh and her step-mother, Mary (Amelia) Marsh.

ATHENS---William W. Swayne, 76, of Route 9W, Athens, died Saturday, March 23, at Stratton Veteran Affairs Medical Center Hospital in Albany. Born March 20, 1926 in Sanford, FL, he was the son of the late William and Caroline Reed Swayne.
Mr. Swayne served in the United States Army and Merchant Marine. He was a veteran of WW11 and the Korean Conflict. He was a diesel mechanic for Conrail in Selkirk for many years prior to his retirement in 1991. He also worked at Sweeps in Hudson prior to being admitted to the hospital.
Mr. Swayne loved aircraft, flying model planes, and was a member at the Rhinebeck Areodrome.
Survivors include his wife, Cora (Cissy) Perkins Swayne of Athens; a step-son, Ted (Donna) Speenburgh of Catskill; two step-daughters, Sandy (Joe) Lucas of Catskill and Faith (Robert) Pough of Athens; four grandchildren, Robert C. COXSACKIE---Howard Winnie, 89, formerly of Coxsackie and the Firemen's Home in Hudson, died Saturday, March 23, at Columbia Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Winnie was born Feb. 19, 1913 in Coxsackie.
Mr. Winnie was employed by the Hudson River Concrete Co. of Ravena for 27 years as a truck driver. He was a member and past chief for over 54 years of the DM Hamilton Steamer Company of Coxsackie. He was past President of the Greene County Firemen's Association, past President of the Greene County Fire Police, Past Chairman of the Greene County Advisory Board, Honorary Member of the Columbia County Firemen's Association; honorary member of the Hudson Fire Police Association of Columbia County. Shop Steward of the Teamsters Union. He was also a past president and member of the Golden Age Bowling League.
Survivors include his daughter Frances (Skip) Stott of Coxsackie; and daughter-in-law Alice Winnie of W. VA; three grandchildren of W. VA, Cathy Turley, Patricia Allison, and Fred Winnie and four Great grandchildren of W. Virginia. Mr. Winnie was predeceased by his wife Dorothy and son Howard, Jr.

Mrs. Cherry was an assistant administrator for the Cherry Nursing Home in Montclair before retiring in 1995. She received a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1958.

ATHENS---Rheta M. Garvin Sovern, 77, of Debbie Drive, Athens, died Tuesday morning, March 26, 2002 at Albany Memorial Hospital. She was born in Brooklyn where she resided until moving to Coxsackie in 1977. She later became an Athens resident in 1994.
She was active in politics and fundraising while residing in Brooklyn and was the Past President of the PTA of School PS No. 99 in Brooklyn where she volunteered much of her time. She also served on the Milwood NY Planning Board.
She married Igor Sovern until his passing in 1978. Survivors include two sons, Matthew (Theresa Sirico Sovern of Athens; and Eric Sovern and his wife Helene of Delmar; a daughter, Andrea (Eric) Zinn; and grandchildren, David, Lorraine and Madelyn Sovern, Elizabeth and David Mayforth.

CAIRO---Valentine H. Kriele Jr., (Val), 79, of Silver Spur Road, West Purling, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, where he had been a patient since Feb. 3, 2002. Born Dec. 4, 1922 in Corona, NY, he was the son of Lillian Ellenberger Kriele of Purling and the late Valentine Kriele, Sr.
Mr. Kriele retired July 1, 1981 from the New York State Department of Corrections at the Coxsackie Correctional Facility as a sergeant. He has been an area resident since 1953. He was a past commander of the Coxsackie Post No. 455 of VFW of Elmont, LI, Past Commodore of the Coxsackie Yacht Club, Past President and Past Executive Board Member of Council 82. In his spare time he loved to fish and be with his wife of 57 years.
Mr. Kriele served his country in the US Navy during World War 11.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma V. Jaakkola Kriele of Purling; and a son, Valentine H. Kriele III.

HIGHLAND---Phyllis H. Lindsey, 90, of Highland, NY, formerly of Catskill, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at Wingate of Ulster in Highland. Born in Everett, MA, on Nov. 16, 1911, she was the daughter of Orra and Effie Schmitt Horsman. Mrs. Lindsey graduated from Simmons College in 1934. She was a dietitian and founded the school lunch program in the Catskill School District. She was active in community services in Catskill and was a member of the Reformed Church of New Paltz.
Survivors include a daughter, Stephanie L. (Richard) King of Highland; two sisters, Margaret Dwight and Virginia Symmes of Boston; two grandchildren, Claudia B. Rose of Cleveland and Stephen Perry of Deltona, FL.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Lester Lindsey, who died in 1978, and a daughter, Clarissa Lindsey Perry, who died in 1975.
There are no calling hours. Funeral services will be held 1 pm Saturday at the Reformed Church of New Paltz, 92 Huguenot St., New Paltz. Interment in the Catskill Rural Cemetery. Funeral under the direction of Sutton Funeral Home, One Woodside Place, Highland, NY.

ANNA CARLOVICH

WINDHAM---Anna Carlovich, 89, of Windham, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson. Born in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Eleanor Puccio Morano. Mrs. Carlovich was married to John V. Carlovich, who died May 7, 1993.
Survivors include a daughter, Lenore Radelich; a son, Albert Carlovich; two brothers, John Morano and Frank Morano; grandchildren, Frank Morano, Stefan Radelich, Marianna Leman, Anna Diaz and John Carlovich; great grandchildren, Mariam, Sebastian, Alexander, Annekerose and Justice.
Along with her husband, Mrs. Carlovich was predeceased by a sister, Rose Trovato, and a brother, Cosmo Morano.
Calling hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 pm Friday, March 29, and 10-11:30 am Saturday, March 30, at the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham. Services will be conducted 11:30 am Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Ashland.

CATSKILL---Theresa M. Gillespie, 64, of 139 Broome St., Catskill, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Community Hospice at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson, after a long illness. Born in New York City, Nov. 12, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Catherine Dunne Ranieri.
She was a communicant of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church of Catskill, and a past employee of ARC of Catskill.
Survivors include three brothers, Jeremiah Ranieri and Anselmo Ranieri, both of Brooklyn, and Joseph Ranieri of Florida.
Calling
hours are noon to 2 pm Monday at the Richards Funeral Home, 383 Bross St., Cairo
Graveside services will take place 2:30 pm Monday in the family plot of
the St. Patrick's Cemetery, Catskill. Pastor John Murphy of St. Patrick's Roman
Catholic Church will officiate.
