Greenville---Denise Boyd, 90, of Greenville, Died Friday, July 19, at the Albany Medical Center. She was born April 6, 1912 in LeHavre, France, daughter of the late George and Marie Breard. Mrs. Boyd was a long time chef at Pine Crest Farm in Freehold.

Survivors include her son, Jack Boyd and his wife Carol of Greenville; two grandsons, Stephen Boyd of Greenville; and Michael Boyd of Hannacroix; also two great-grandchildren, Stephen and Natasha Boyd.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, from the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville. Interment will follow in the Greenville Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Greenville Rescue Squad.

Catskill—George Brockway, 75, Catskill, died Friday evening, July 19, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

Born Nov. 10, 1926 in Alsen, he was the son of the later Harry and Mary (Clearwater) Brockway. Mr. Brockway served in the United States Navy. He was a veteran of World War II. He was an employee of the Independent Cement Company in Catskill for over 42 years prior to his retirement in 1988.

He was a member of the Cairo American Legion Post No. 983; Cement, Lime, and Gypsum Workers Union Local No. 50; and the Catskill Elks Lodge No. 1341.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Theresa (Miller) Brockway of Catskill; three sons, Dennis J. Brockway and wife Darlene, both of Floral City, Fla; Dale R. Brockway and wife Randi of Somers, Conn.; and David Brockway and companion, Jenny Catalano, both of Catskill; two daughters, Darlene M. Myer and husband, Scott, both of Catskill; and Diana Brockway-Sutherland, and husband Wayne, both of Athens; two sisters, Helen Campagna of Plant City, Fla; and Agnes Ward of Saugerties; 10 grandchildren, Michael Connolly and wife Lauren, Lauren Brockway-Keely and husband, Richard, Amber Brockway, Chelsea Brockway, Rachel Myer, Jaime Brockway, Moriah Brockway, Linda Brockway, Cory Sutherland, and Samantha Sutherland; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Brockway was predeceased by a brother Fred Brockway and a sister, Elsie Beare.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Rev. John J. Murphy, Pastor, at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church of Catskill will be officiating.

Memorial donations to any local Greene County fire department or rescue squad would be appreciated by the family.

Greenville—Joseph James O’Brien, 79, of County Estates, Greenville, died Monday, July 22, 2002 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

Born March 17, 1923 in Granard, County Longford, Ireland, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Mariah (Connell) O’Brien. Mr. O’Brien graduated from Columbia University with a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

He helped work on the NASA Apollo space mission to the moon. He later was an employee for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in Stony Brook until his retirement. Mr. O’Brien was a member of the American-Irish Congress.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret O. Rogers and husband, Jere, both of Galway and Susan O’Brien-Mroczek and husband Robert, both of Hyde Park; and two brothers, Thomas O’Brien of London, England and William O’Brien of Birmingham, England.

Mr. O’Brien was predeceased by his wife, Christa A. O’Brien, on March 11, 2002; two brothers, Patrick O’Brien and Lawrence O’Brien; and three sisters, Elizabeth O’Brien, Kathryn O’Brien, and Mary Duggan.

Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday from the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home. 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Services will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday at he funeral home, followed at a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bridget’s Church, Main St. Leeds. The Rev. Richard Jacobs will be officiating.

Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Catskill.

Windham—Muriel L. Perry of Jewett, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston. Mrs. Perry, a homemaker, was born in Ashland on Oct.11,1921.

Survivors include her daughter, Evalena Joan Gates; a sister, Louise Fairchild of St Petersburg, Fla; a brother Edgar Shufelt of Canaan, Conn.; grandchildren, Debbie Start; Cindy Tortorelis, Billy Matthews, Beverly Humentskyj, Todd Matthews, Timmy Matthews, Dickie Parry and Doddie Perry; 16 great grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at the Jewett Presbyterian Church, 53 Church St. Jewett. The Rev Dianna Smith will officiate.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham.

Coxsackie—Henry William Thornberry, 76, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, while en route to Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson, while here visiting his daughter, Susan, who lives in Coxsackie.

Mr. Thornberry was born Jan. 16, 1926, in Dublin, Ireland. He was the son of the late George and Mary (Whelan) Thornberry.

While working for UPI, he was transferred to New York in 1968. In 1974, he took a job with the New York Times. He retired from the New York Times in 1988 and moved back home to Ireland.

Survivors include his wife Gertrude, Thornberry of Bray, Ireland; daughters Susan J. Maraglio of Coxsackie and Carol Thornberry of Bray, Ireland; son-in-law, Mark P. Maraglio of Coxsackie; grandson, Matthew Maraglio of Coxsackie; granddaughter, Sarah Maraglio of Coxsackie; sister, Anne Robinson of Bray, Ireland; brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Carole Thornberry of Wendover, England; brother and sister-in-law, Keven and Bernedette Thornberry, of Monkstown, Ireland; and several nieces and nephews in Ireland, England and Singapore.

Calling hours will be 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the W. C. Brady’s Sons Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St. Coxsackie.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place 10 a.m. Wednesday, at St Mary’s Church. The Rev. John Moyna will be the celebrant.

Greenville—Cynthia Ford, 69, of Cairo died at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill on July 22, 2002.

She was born in Queens on Aug. 31, 1932, daughter of the late Manuel and Adele (D’Andria) Quarto.

Mrs. Ford was a secretary having worked at many different locations, among her favorites were the Pioneer Insurance Co. in Greenville, the transportation director secretary position at Cairo-Durham Central School and the secretary to the principal position at Durham Elementary School.

She enjoyed her bingo, the Mohegan Sun, and her sons’ little league and soccer games.

She was active in her church and community. She was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church in Cairo, a member of the Cairo Rotary Anns, the Cairo-Durham Lady Elks, and proud of her membership in TOPS in Greenville.

She was always a volunteer and she did so by teaching religious education and first holy communion classes at Sacred Heart Church in Cairo.

She served the Catholic Charities, was a kindergarten aide at Cairo Elementary, she assisted her husband at the defensive driving classes and also helped at the Greene County Public Health Nursing office.

Surviving are her husband, Lionel Ford; three sons, Paul Ford of Round Top, Brian Ford of Greenville and Mark Ford of Lighthouse, Fla; a grandson, Kristopher Ford; a sister, Annette Tucciarone, and her husband Salvatore of Staten Island; a niece, Linda Tucciarone; and a nephew, Robert Tucciarone.

Services will be Thursday, 8:45 a.m. from the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. from the Sacred Heart Church.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Cremation will be at the Albany Rural Cemetery and interment in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Those who desire may contribute in her memory to the Albany Medical Center Cancer Research, Albany, or the Columbia Memorial Hospital Cancer Center in Hudson.

Catskill—Barbara Stefanko, 87, died Monday, July 22, 2002, surrounded by family and friends at her residence in Fellsmer, Fla., after a prolonged illness.

She was a member of the Senior Citizens Club of Catskill and was a past member of the Hudson Valley Rebekah Lodge.

Survivors include her son, Floyd Prince and his three children, Kinberly Tanner, together with her husband Rick, and their daughter, Stacey; Floyd Prince Jr., together with his wife, Cathy, and their son, Floyd Prince III; and Darci Jo Prince, together with their son, Eric, a daughter, Betty Pemberton, together with her husband Robert; and her granddaughter and caretaker, Elizabeth Proper DeWees and Robert Owens DeWees, together with his wife Amy, and their two children, Ashley and Halle DeWees; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Stefanko was predeceased by her husband Charles B. Stefanko, her brother, Raymond O’Bryan, and her sister, Lillian Pacell.

Catskill—George “Big George” Hillenbrand Sr., 62 of Catskill, died suddenly Sunday evening, July 28, 2002, at his residence.

Born May 11, 1940 in East Meadow, N. Y., he was the son of Frank A. Hillenbrand Sr. and the late Carmen Esqualdo Hillenbrand.

Mr. Hillenbrand had been a truck driver for Schwermann in Cementon prior to his retirement.

He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, National Rifle Association and the Bass Masters.

Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Beth Kusisto of Catskill; and their two sons; George Hillenbrand Jr. and Matthew Hillenbrand, both of Catskill; daughter-in-law, Regina Hillenbrand; two grand children, Beth Ann Hillenbrand and George Hunter Hillenbrand; his father, Frank A. Hillenbrand; a sister, Joan Smith of Georgia; two brothers, Richard Hillenbrand of Long Island and Frank A. Hillenbrand Jr. of Messina; in addition to many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews cousins and numerous friends.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Paul Mengle, pastor of the High Hill Methodist Church, officiating.

Hudson—Esther L. Stickles, 99, formerly of Dodge Street, Hudson, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill.

Born April 12, 1903 in Hudson, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Daisy (Eldrich) Baker.

Survivors include three sons, Richard Stickles and Terry Stickles, both of Catskill, and Donald Stickles of Greenport; a daughter, Janice Myers of Greenport; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Skickles was predeceased by her husband, Richard Stickles Sr., and brother, Robert Baker.

A calling hour will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday, at the Bates & Anderson Funeral Home, 110 Green St., Hudson.

Catskill—Ronald S. (Corky) Van Deusen, 72, of 21 Walter Smith Road, Catskill, died July 28, 2002, at St. Peter’s Hospice in Albany.

Born Dec. 6, 1928, in Danbury, Conn., he was the son of the later Ralph and Beatrice (Joslyn) Van Deusen.

He was an employee of the New York State Department of Corrections for 28 years prior to his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Marianna (Dieckmann)Van Deusen of Catskill; a son, Rory Van Deusen and wife, Joyce, both of Cape Coral, Fla.; a daughter, Heidi Van Deusen of Brooklyn, mother-in-law, Gesine Dieckmann of Catskill; three grandchildren, Courtney, Brett and Scott Van Deusen, all of Cape Coral, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Bobbi Jean Van Deusen; and one niece.

Calling hours will be 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug 1 at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Rev. David Overton, Chaplain of the Community Hospice of Columbia-Greene, will be officiating.

Interment will follow in the town of Catskill Cemetery.

Albany—Lorraine Becker, 76, of Medusa, died at the St. Peter’s Hospice Inn in Albany. She was born in Brooklyn on Aug. 5, 1925, daughter of the late William and Elene (Soderman) Schaefer. She was a member of the Greenville-Norton Hill United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and the Rennselaerville Senior Citizens. She was predeceased by her husband Charles Becker, and a son, Richard Bray.

She was the loving mother of Glenn T. Bray of Stillwater, N. J., Walter S. Bray of Mamaroneck, William Bray of Staten Island, two daughters, Donna L. Egdorf of South Westerlo and Linda G. Vetere of South Westerlo. She was beloved by her 15 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and two sisters, Pearl Putnam of Barefoot Bay, Fla., and Jean Smith of Preston Hollow and East Meadow, a brother William G. Schaefer of New Port Richey, Fla., and several nieces and nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be Friday 11 a.m. from the Greeneville-Norton Hill United Methodist Church in Norton Hill. Friends and relatives may call at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville, on Thursday, ,2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Interment will be in the Medusa Cemetery. Those who desire may donate in her memory to the Greenville-Norton Hill United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Waterford—William W. Scott Sr., 74, of Harris Road, and formerly of Catskill, and Arcade, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at his daughter’s home in Waterford.

Born in Buffalo, he was the son of the late Wallace G. and Margaret C. Ottenot Scott.

Mr. Scott has served as Chief Executive Officer of V & O Press in Hudson and retired in 1986. Prior to that he was the General Manager at K. R. Wilson Inc., in Arcade as well as having been employed by ADEC Automation of Folcroft, Pa., the Greater Buffalo Press and Universal Match Corp. of Conway, Ark.

He had served for two years as advisor to former Arkansas Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller.

A Veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps., he served during World War II and was a 54-year member of the American Legion having belonged to Hudson Post No. 184 as well as the Mohawk Post No. 1450 in Halfmoon.

He was a member of the Elks Lodger No. 787 in Hudson and was a founder of the “Winterfest” in Arcade.

While a resident of the Catskill area, Mr. Scott was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church in Catskill.

He was the father of Colleen Swedish and her husband Gary of Waterford, William W. Scott Jr. and his wife Diane of Carlsbad, N. M., Mary Sismour and her husband Richard of Danbury, Conn., Patricia Myers and her husband, Rick of North Collins and Margaret Templeton and her husband Hugh of East Greenbush. Sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.

Services w2ill be 10:30 a.m. Thursday from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St., (Route 32) Waterford and at 11 a.m. at St. Anne’s Church, Waterford.

Prattsville—Marguerite B. Tompkins, 86, of Prattsville died after a long illness on July 29,2002 at Eden Park Health Care Center in Catskill.

She was born in the town of Ashland on Feb., 19, 1916, the daughter of Ralph and Elizabeth (Ormsbee) Van Hoesen. She married Robert G. Tompkins on Nov. 11, 1936. She was predeceased by her husband in 1985 and by a sister, Ruth Porn, and her brother Richard Van Hoesen.

Mrs. Thompkins did the bookkeeping for her husband’s trucking business, and had been a Sunday school teacher and a Girl Scout Leader. She is survived by her daughter Mary Buerge, her son-in-law Eugene Buerge, and one grandson, Jeremy Buerge, She is also survived by one sister, Doris Frechette, and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug 1, 20002 at the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham, with the funeral service immediately following. Interment will follow in the Fairlawn Cemetery in Prattsville.
