Simcik on September 1, 1936. A year later their son was born and they moved to Ravena. They later resided in West Coxsackie where she lived until her husband’s death in 1972. As a teenager, Mrs. Simcik’s mother studied the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses eager to learn what the Scriptures taught about death since her eldest daughter had recently died. Mrs. Simcik was comforted and motivated by what she learned and later chose to volunteer much of her time helping others to understand these and other Bible teachings. She did this by visiting many people in Greene County and often went out of her way to assist others especially in their times of need.

As firm as she was in her religious beliefs, she was neither pious nor prudish and had a zest for life marked by humor, colorful expressions and even practical jokes. She always found pleasure in the company of friends with whom she shared meals or played pinochle. More than all else, she lived for and loved Jehovah her God and her family, especially her grandchildren. She had confidence in the belief of a future resurrection to paradise—a hope that sustained her through the loss of many loved ones, a hope that now sustains those who loved her and remember her fondly.

HENRY E. LEMBKE
Farmer

CAIRO---Henry Ernst Lembke, 101, died Wednesday, February 25, 2004 in the Hospice Unit of Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

He was born January 7, 1903, the son of Henry and Margaret Elizabeth (Febinger) Lembke in Middle Village, New York.

His father grew produce to sell at the Harlem Market in Manhattan and at age 14, Henry drove the team and farm wagon to market once a week to give his older brother time to court his girl.

At 16, Henry spent the summer of 1919 plowing the fields with a team of horses on the farm his parents bought at the corner of Ira Vail and Sandy Plains Road in South Cairo. When he was 18, on the way home from Albany Market, Henry spotted an open-cockpit biplane standing in a field near Ravena and decided to get a closer look. The pilot soon arrived with a part for the engine and when it was fixed, offered to give him his first airplane ride. It was an awesome experience and in less than seven years, Henry had attended flight school and was accumulating hours toward his private pilot’s license.

Between 1929 and 1933, Henry bought his first plane, an Ox-5 Travelair, and went “barnstorming” in the Stillwater-Mechanicville-Saratoga region. But the Sandy Plains farm was heaven on earth to Henry, so he married Ellen Sutton in 1935 and began raising their three children. there. Circumstances changed in 1942 when the Lembke farm was sold and they moved to the Sutton Farm on Route 32 near the Catskill Game Farm to help Ellen’s widowed mother.

One of Henry’s sincere regrets was that he was too young to serve his country in the Armed Forces during World War I and too old to serve in World War II. He joined the local Civil Air Patrol at Catskill Airport and was an active member until the end of World War II. Henry then bought a Stearman biplan, which had been used as a pilot trainer, and flew in local air shows at the Catskill Airport, operated by Leo Boice.

In 1946 when Kiskatom Volunteer Fire Department was organized, the charter members asked Henry, an experienced mechanic, to look at a used Larabee they were thinking of buying as their first firetruck (which they did). Although he was not a charter member, he became a life member of the department.

From 1946 until his retirement in 1970, Henry drove tractor-trailors, first hauling milk from northern New York to bottling plants in New York City for Deforest L. Reed Trucking, Carthage, New York and then driving for Carlton G. Whitaker of Unadilla, New York delivering dairy products to Boston, Hartford and throughout New England.

Henry tended vegetable gardens at home until his 88th year growing enough to can for winter as well as providing extra for his children’s families. He was always willing to help family, friends and neighbors however he could and his children and grandchildren loved and respected him all his life.

He is survived by his children, Elizabeth G. (Betty) Ellett and Ernest S. Lembke, both of Catskill and Marlene Weis of Cairo; grandchildren Edward, Robert, James and Daniel Ellet, Rebecca Ronk, Michael W. and Stephen A. Wase, all of Catskill, Darryl C. Wase of Cairo, Matthew E. Lembke of Greenville; step-grandchildren Kit Ross and Shari Ross Patterson of Colorado; 11 great-grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren, nephews William Freeman of Cairo and Arthur Lembke of Bowie, MD; niece Florence Flinn of Tannersville and their families, nieces Marilyn Wilkinson, Joyce Gilman of Florida and Shirley Hilker of Ithaca, new York.

Henry was predeceased by his wife Ellen in 1994 as well as sisters Anna Freeman, Lydia Lembke and brother Frederick J. Lembke previously.

The Millspaugh-Camerato Funeral Home is in charge of cremation and interment at the Town of Catskill Cemetery will be in the spring at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be made to the Kidney Foundation, American Heart Association, Community Hospice or a charity of one’s choice.
