GREENVILLE---Mildred P. Adriance, 96, of Greenville, died Jan. 30, 2001, at Albany Medical Center.

Born Sept. 16, 1904, in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert Powell and Katie (Tappan) Powell.

She was employed in earlier years as a cafeteria worker at the Greenville Central School.

She was a longtime member of the Clematis Garden Club and the Tuesday Ladies Pinochle Group.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Finch of Ravena; and four grandchildren, Brian Finch, Karen Shibuya, Jennifer DeMercurio and Traci Finch; and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Adriance was predeceased by her husband, Harry Adriance, and 10 siblings.

Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at the Cunningham Funeral Home in Greenville.

Private cremation will follow the funeral service.

CATSKILL---Charles Leland Davidson, 76, a retired equipment operator for the Village of Catskill Water Department, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Albany Medical Center in Albany.

Mr. Davidson was born Jan. 8, 1925 in Tunkhannock, Pa., the son of Herbert Davidson and Della (Belles) Davidson. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He worked at the Village of Catskill Water Department until 1990. He had previously been employed by Chemical Leaman Transport Co. in Albany, Atlantic Cement Co. in Ravena and Universal Atlat Co. in Hudson.

Mr. Davidson was a member of Wadsworth Lodge No. 417 F&AM and the Tunkhannock Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy (Pellegrino) Davidson, whom he married in 1965; a sister, Alice Johnson of Selkirk; a brother, Larry Davidson of Dundee; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Richard Snowden, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Catskill, officiating. Interment will be at the St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Catskill.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

CATSKILL---Olivia Impastato, 84, long-time Catskill and Palenville resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at the Pavilion in Catskill.

Born Sept. 29, 1916 in Alcamo, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Leonard Pirrello and Mary (Renda) Pirello.

She was married on Oct. 15, 1941, to Procopio S. Impastato. They resided in Brooklyn prior to moving to the Catskill area in 1952.

For many years, Mrs. Impastato owned and operated Shoreland Farms of Catskill. Later, Mrs. Impastato was a supervisor for many years at Atlanta Knitting Mills in Catskill and Athens.

She was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Catskill. She was a member of the Catskill Lady Elks Lodge No. 1341 and was an RSVP volunteer at Greene County Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include two sons, Peter Impastato Edwards of Gainesville, Ga. and Leonard Impastato of Connecticut; two daughters, Providence Baker McLouth of Nassau and Maria Impastato Rothrock of Palenville; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home at 234 Jefferson Heights in Catskill.

Services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, followed by a 10a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church on Bridge Street in Catskill. The Rev. John J. Murphy, pastor, will officiate.

Interment will follow at the St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Catskill.

CHATHAM---Evelyn M. Knapp, 82, of 5 School St., Chatham, died Jan. 29, 2001, at Green Manor Nursing Home in Ghent after a long illness.

Born Feb. 22, 1908, in Philmont, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Rollins.

Prior to her retirement, she was a secretary for an accounting firm.

Private cremation took place Wednesday at the Wiltwyck Crematory in Kingston.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Valenti & Richards Funeral Home at 700 Town Hall Drive in Greenport.

NORTON HILL---Lawrence Smith, Jr., of Norton Hill, died at his home Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Smith was born in Medusa, the son of the late Gertrude (Lewis) Smith and Laurence Smith.

He was a treasurer of Aurora, Inc. Insurance Agency of Albany before he retired.

He was a lifelong resident of the Greenville area. He served as a member of Gen. George Patton’s Third Army during World War II and was decorated with the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a past commander of American Legion Post No. 291, where he served as treasurer for 30 years, and past commander of the Greene County American Legion.

Mr. Smith served as chairman of the Greenville High School building committee; a past president of the Greenville Rotary; a committee member for Boy Scout Troop 42; a Little League and Babe Ruth coach; past commodore and member of Mohawk Council; Awenke Yacht Club; president of the Greenville Democratic Committee; fire commissioner of the Greenville Fire Company for 20 years; and chairman of the Greenville Winter Carnival.

Survivors include his wife, Joan (Kelly) Smith; six children, Judy Wickham, Larry Smith, Neil Baumann, Kelly Slean, Stephanie Devillers, and Beth Ann Atcavage; a sister, Marjorie Parks; a nephew; and 16 grandchildren.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday at the Cunningham Funeral Home in Greenville. Services will be at 11 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A private cremation will follow the funeral service.

GREENVILLE---William Francis, 74, of Greenville, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at the Samuel Stratton Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Albany.

Mr. Francis was born Aug. 12, 1926, in Greenville, the son of the late Fred Francis and Charlotte (Dickson) Francis.

He retired after 40 years of employment at American Valve Co., in West Coxsackie. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of staff sergeant before his discharge.

Mr. Francis was drum major for the Coxsackie Boys Drum Corps, taking them many times to New York City to parade. He was an active member of the Greenville American Legion and the Greenville Volunteer Fire Company.

He was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn (Francis) Smith; and three brothers, Leonard Francis, Walter Francis, and Alfred Francis.

Survivors include his longtime companion, Louise Wells, and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Cunningham Funeral Home on Route 81 in Greenville, where American Legion Post No. 291 will conduct services at 7 p.m. and the Greenville Volunteer Fire Company at 7:30 p.m.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the spring at the convenience of the family.

LEEDS---Grace A. McEntee, 84, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at St. Lucie Medical Center in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Born Sept. 29, 1916 in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of John Koper and Gesina (Harling) Koper.

Mrs. McEntee lived in Leeds and had wintered in Port St. Lucie, Fla., for the last nine years. She was a charter member of the Leeds Dutch Reformed Church Women’s Club and enjoyed reading and crafts.

Survivors include a daughter, Grace Anne Valentine of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; three grandsons, Keith Valentine of Catskill, Scott Valentine of Livingston and Kevin Valentine of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a granddaughter, Kathleen Valentine of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. McEntee was predeceased by her husband, William C. McEntee; her father, John Koper; her mother, Gesina Harling Koper; and a son-in-law, Albert Valentine.

Calling hours were 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill.

ASHLAND---Hermann Schoepe, 93, of Ashland, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at his residence.

Born March 22, 1907 in Breslan, Germany, he was the son of Paul Schoepe and Martha (Pol) Schoepe.

Mr. Schoepe was a bakery chef who specialized in cake decorating.

He was a member of St. Theresa’s Church of the Child Jesus in Windham.

Survivors include his wife, Lydia (Huber) Schoepe; five children, Paul Schoepe of Ashland, Charlotte Gemmel of Hauppage, Susan Kasckak of Hauppage, Dieter Schoepe of Commack and Peter Schoepe of Hauppage; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Decker Funeral Home at 134 Main St. in Windham.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church in Windham.

WINDHAM---Mary Carpenter, 98, of Windham, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

Born July 29, 1903, in County Cavin, Ireland, she was the daughter of Hugh McGoldrick and Bridget Gilbride.

She was once employed as a chambermaid at the Osborne House, which was in Windham, and also for Ski Windham, for many years.

Mrs. Carpenter was a loyal and devoted follower of her faith, her Irish heritage and courageous through the many difficult times in her life.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary German; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert, 11 years ago, and by her daughter, Grace.

Calling hours will be 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Decker Funeral Home on Main Street in Windham.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 9:30 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Donald E. Doyle as celebrant.

Interment will follow in the spring at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Ashland.

CATSKILL---Dorothea J. “Dottie” Giordiano long-time Catskill area resident of 3154 Old Kings Road, Catskill, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

She was married May 11, 1977 to James D. Giordiano of Catskill.

Mrs. Giordiano was a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She loved to sew and enjoyed boating on the Hudson River.

Survivors include her husband, James D. Giordiano of Catskill; two daughters, Michelle Helmis of Andros, Greece, and Johanna Plant of Catskill; and three grandchildren, Yonnie Helmis, Michael Helmis, and Christine Helmis, all of Andros, Greece.

Private cremation services were performed at Park View Cemetery in Schenectady.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Beside her parents, she is survived by her maternal grandparents, John Zibro and Martha Zibro of Waterford; paternal grandmother, Arline Dederick of New Jersey; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Donald H. Dederick.

He was a resident of Climax for many years. He had been living in St. Petersburg, Fla., for the last three years.

Born Oct 9, 1952, in Langham, England, he was the son of the late Douglas W. Hawksby and Janet (Sergeant) Hawksby.

Survivors include his son, Michael John Hawksby, Jr., of Catskill; his sister, Kim Saccoccie; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and many cousins.

GREENVILLE—Dermot Brenden Hynes, 63, of Greenville, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany.

Born April 2, 1937, in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Dennis Hynes and Catherine (Chambers) Hynes.

Mr. Hynes was the proprietor of Country Square Liquor Store in Greenville. He served his country in the U.S. Navy as a radioman aboard the USS Erben.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Dorothy Karin (Mahne) Hynes; his children, Audrey Karin Hynes, Deirdre Ann Petersen, Christopher Hynes and Tara Michelle Miller; five grandchildren, Catherine Mary Sietlaff, Emma Ann and Hannah Lore Petersen, Fiona Maeve Hynes and Nicholas Brenden Miller; and a brother, John D. Hynes.

ATHENS---Stephen J. Labato, 48, of Third Street, Athens, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Albany Medical Center after a long illness.

Mr. Labato was born in Brooklyn on Feb. 17, 1952, the son of Joseph Labato and the late Lillian (Marcanno) Lobato.

He owned and operated his own construction company in Texas prior to his death.

Survivors include his father, Joseph Labato of Massapequa; three sisters, Diane A. Puorro of Athens, Gail Capoti of Babylon and Christine Gallapoli of Farmingdale; a nephew; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and cousins.

FREEHOLD---Barbara J. (Yander) Parisi, 58, of Route 41, Freehold, died Sunday after a brief illness. She was hospitalized for one week at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany after experiencing a heart attack.

Ms. Parisi was born in Brooklyn on Aug. 8, 1942, the daughter of the late Robert Comisky and Marcella (Plona) Comisky.

Prior to her retirement, she was a telemarketer in Florida.

Survivors include five children, Laura Finch and John Yander, both of Tennessee, and Edward Yander, Marc Yander and Lorraine Cagle, all of Greene County; and 10 grandchildren.

She was born June 15, 1903 in Italy.

Survivors include a son, Patsy Joseph Sausto of Leeds; three grandsons, Joseph A. Sausto II of Leeds, Patrick Sausto of New Rochelle and Christopher Sausto of Leeds; a granddaughter, Giselle Sausto of Bronxville, N.Y.; two great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.

CAIRO---Albert G. Barbato, Sr., 75, of Edison Timmerman Road, Acra, died Feb. 1, 2001, in the West Palm Beach Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Florida following a short illness.

He was retired after being an auto mechanic for the last 60 years. He was a life-long member of the Cairo Fire Department and a member of the Cairo Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce and Italian-American Club.

He served in World War II on an aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged with medals.

Survivors include three children, Albert J. Barbato of Acra, Elaine Turon of Coxsackie, and Debora Barbato of Acra; five grandchildren, Albert and Tammy Barbato of Acra, Eric Turon of Athens, Kyle Turon of Hudson, and Eric Turon of the Bronx; and his companion, Joan Higgins.

ILION---Everett H. Colburn, 86, of 72 South Fourth Ave, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Hartford.

He was born Jan. 6, 1915, in Ilion, the son of Charles Colburn and Mary Elizabeth Huber Colburn. He was a graduate of Ilion High School and served as a radioman first class with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was stationed at Guantanamo Bay and also served in the Pacific Theater. On May 11, 1946, he married Suzanne Pollak in Herkimer. Mr. Colburn was employed as an accountant with Union, Fork and Hoe for over 40 years, retiring several years ago.

Mr. Colburn was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Herkimer, the Ilion American Legion Post No. 920 and was part post commander, the Frankfort Mason Lodge and was past master and a 51-year member, the Ilion VFW Post No. 502 and was a ham radio operator for more than 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Suzanne Pollak Colburn; a son, James E. Colburn of Murrieta, Calif.; three daughters, Donna C. Wheat of Catskill, Karen C. Umber of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Patricia C. Glosgowski of Ilion; seven grandchildren, Jennifer and Joshua Colburn, Courtney and Gillian Wheat, Blake Umber, and Amber and Abraham Stubley; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. from the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home at 100 Otsego St. in Ilion with the Pastor Dale Dickerson of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be at Armory Hill Cemetery in the spring.

ATHENS---Frank J. Gabrielle, Sr., 89, formerly of Brick Row, Athens, died Feb. 6, 2001, at Community Hospice at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

He was born in Athens, April 12, 1911, the son of the late Anthony Gabrielle and Gladys (Bush) Gabrielle.

Prior to retiring, Mr. Gabrielle was employed as a foreman for the Kraus Mushroom Co. of Coxsackie and also the Athens Brick Yard. During his youth, he cut ice for the icehouses in Athens that supplied ice to New York City prior to refrigeration. He also fished the Hudson River for sturgeon.

Mr. Gabrielle was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Hilda (Bathrick) Gabrielle; and siblings, David Gabrielle, Tennessee Deamer and Florence Rogers; and two children, Edward and Dolores Gabrielle.

Interment will take place in the spring next to his wife in the family plot of the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Athens.

GERMANTOWN---Willard B. Rogers, 82, of Germantown, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at his home.

Born Nov. 25, 1918 in the Bronx, he was the son of the late Verner Rogers and Anna (Willard) Rogers.

Before his retirement in 1978 he had been employed as a safety inspector for 42 years with ConRail of Utica.

Mr. Rogers was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army’s 740^th Railway Operations Battalion in the Ardennes, Central Europe, Northern France and the Rhineland.

He was a member of the Reformed Church of Germantown, a life member and past quartermaster of the Southern Columbia VFW Post No. 6398 of Germantown, a 55-year member of Jennings-Willet American Legion Post No. 346 of Germantown, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, a life member of the Military Order of the Cootie, a 54-year member of the Monumental Lodge No. 374 of Tivoli and a member of the Railroad Oldtimers Association of Poughkeepsie.

Survivors include his wife, Edith (Graf) Rogers; one son, Willard M. Rogers of Clifton Park; two daughters, Janine Rogers and Eileen Shannon, both of Germantown; one brother, Franklyn Rogers of California; and 12 grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Alma Mickle Rogers who died in 1973, and a brother, Donald, who died in 1992.

WINDHAM---George R. Wiegand, 100, of Ashland, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill.

Born Feb. 16, 1900, in the Bronx, he was the son of Leonhard Wiegand and Martha Westermann Wiegand.

Mr. Wiegand was a graduate of the Pratt Institute and was a design draftsman of Otis Elevators. He was a communicant of St. Theresa’s Church in Windham.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 76 years, Virginia (Kappes) Wiegand, whom he married in June 1924; two sons, George R. Wiegand, Jr. and John J. Wiegand; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Frances V. O’Hara.

COXSACKIE---Louis A. Coment, 92, of Newington, Conn., died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001.

Mr. Coment was born in Coxsackie, but has been a resident of Newington, Conn., for 40 years.

He entered the 544^th Army Air Services Group as a second lieutenant after Pearl Harbor and received the Bronze Star for meritorious service in the Mediterranean Theater. He was discharged from the Army at the end of World War II with the rank of major.

His career as a financial manager with General Electric spanned 46 years at offices in Boston, Indianapolis and Hartford. He retired in 1973.

He was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church, Newington, Conn., serving for years in many different leadership positions, including senior warden. He was also active in the Newington Grange.

He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Evelyn Hoag Coment.

Survivors include a sister, Marie Traver, of Greenville, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was conducted Friday at Grace Episcopal Church, Newington, Conn., with the Rev. George L. Choyce officiating.

A private interment was at West Meadow Cemetery.

Mrs. Miller was employed by the Pickwick Lodge in Round Top for many years as a secretary.

Survivors include her husband, Judge Howard Miller; a son, Wayne H. Miller; a granddaughter, Stephanie Hamby; and a sister, Eleanor Phillips.

She was a loving wife, mother and homemaker devoted to her family.

Born May 5, 1910, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Milton Henry Ford and Emma May (Aydellott) Ford.

She was a communicant of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Church in Windham.

Survivors include a nephew, John Brucker of Ashland, and niece, Margaret Katz of Baltimore.

Graveside services were conducted Friday, Feb. 16, at the Cemetery of the Immaculate Conception in Montclair, N.J.

While she was employed, she was a sales clerk at Zales Department Store in Florida.

Survivors include a son, Harry DeSposito of Hudson; and two daughters, Helen Knefley of Port Alleganey, Pa., and Theresa Castle of Silver Springs, Fla.

Mrs. Lane was predeceased by two husbands, Frank DeSposito and Albert Lane, as well as a son, Robert DeSposito on Nov. 3, 1999.

Services will be 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

CATSKILL---Bridget McGourty, 78, of Catskill, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at the Pinehaven Home in Philmont.

She was born Oct. 7, 1922, in Ireland.

She was an employee of the Catholic Church, working at various rectories in metropolitan New York and New Jersey, as well as Saugerties and Athens prior to her retirement.

She was a resident of St. Joseph’s Villa in Catskill for a few years prior to moving to Philmont. She enjoyed traveling extensively with local church groups.

Ms. McGouty is survived by several cousins.

Graveside funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at St. Patrick’s Cemetery on North Jefferson Avenue in Catskill. Pastor John J. Murphy of St. Patrick’s Church of Catskill will officiate.

CAIRO---Florence “Flossie” Booth Malone, 87, a long-time resident of Cairo, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at the Eden Park Nursing Home.

Born Oct. 29, 1913, in Tuckahoe, she was the daughter of the late Jennie and Salomon Bells.

Mrs. Malone was employed by the New York Telephone Co. in Westchester until 1943. At that time, she moved to Cairo with her mother and son, Richard Booth.

She was employed as a nurse at St. Joseph’s Villa in Catskill for 31 years before she retired in 1981.

Survivors include her son, Richard E. Booth of Cairo; her grandchildren, Gretchen Booth Garfinkle and Garret Booth of Peterborough, N.H.; and a great-granddaughter.

Mrs. Malone was predeceased by her first husband, Almond E. Booth, and her second husband, Joseph Malone.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Richards Funeral Home at 383 Bross St. in Cairo.

CATSKILL---Kenneth W. Simpkins, 87, of Catskill, died Sunday afternoon, Feb. 18, 2001, at the Adventist Nursing Home in Livingston.

Born Oct. 9, 1913, in Leeds, he was the son of the late Samuel Simpkins and Ethel (Brandt) Simpkins.

Mr. Simpkins was a graduate of Catskill High School, Class of 1932.

He was a long-time employee of A.L. Moon Fuel Co. of Catskill prior to his retirement. He also owned a farm on Cauterskill Road until 1999.

He was a life member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Catskill.

Survivors include a daughter, Ione Patricia of Coxsackie; two sons, Kenneth Simpkins of Gilbert, Ariz., and John Simpkins of Avondale, Ariz.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Simpkins was predeceased by his wife of more than 60 years, Mary P. Simpkins, on July 23, 1998; his daughter, Mary Catherine, in 1978; a brother, Lysle E. Simpkins, killed in action during World War II; and two sisters, Roberta Tolbert and Agnes Lewis.

Calling hours will be 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home at 234 Jefferson Heights, in Catskill.

Services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Father Hendrick, pastor of Christ Church of Hudson, will officiate.

CATSKILL---Madeline White, 80, former Palenville business owner, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

Born June 12, 1920, in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Pizza and Anna (Perrotta) Pizza.

She had been a resident of the Eden Park Nursing Home in Hudson since July 1988.

Mrs. White resided in Palenville for 30 years and operated the White Bus Line and Home Bakery for many years.

Survivors include her daughter, Gina Dube of Milford, N.H.; two sons, Edward T. White, Jr., of Palenville and Randy White of Atlanta; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. White was predeceased by her husband, Edward Thomas White, on June 7, 1975.

Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20 and 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill.

GREENVILLE---Walter Jaromir Birmann, 98, died Feb. 20, 2001, at his home in Schroon Lake.

Born Dec. 31, 1902, in Chemnitz, Germany, he was the son of the late, Otto Birmann and Ana (Hildt) Birmann and came to America in 1906.

He lived in Hillside, N.J., until 1917, when he and his family moved to Greenville. He operated the family farm and in the 1920’s he and his family established Rainbow Lodge, a summer resort.

In 1955, he started construction of a golf course. Rainbow Lodge and Rainbow Golf Resort are still a family operation.

Mr. Birmann was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman, having hunted in Canada, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona and the Adirondacks since the 1920’s. He fished the Florida Keys where he spent the winters. The last 13 years, he and his wife had a winter home in Northport, Fla., at Lazy River Park.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Ruth (Turon) Birmann; his sons, Walter and Carl Birmann; a nephew; two stepdaughters, Carole Byrne and Janice Donovan; nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Birmann was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (Larkin) Birmann, and his sisters, Charlotte Dressler and Amanda Meyer.

Calling hours will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Cunningham Funeral Home in Greenville.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Nester was a machinist for Stiefel Laboratories in East Durham.

She was born in Brooklyn, March 8, 1965, and was the daughter of Connie (Girardi) Owen of Cairo and the late Robert Owen.

Services will take place Tuesday, Feb. 27, 8 p.m. at the Richards Funeral Home, 383 Bross St., Cairo.

Pastor Anthony Saturnino of the Grace Assembly of God Church of Cairo will officiate. Interment will follow in the spring at the Cairo Cemetery.

Besides her mother, survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Priola of Staten Island and Erin Lauren Gregio of Catskill; a brother, Robert Owen of Catskill; two sisters, Andrea White of East Durham and Elizabeth DeCamp of Cairo; maternal grandmother, Jennie Girardi; three uncles, Michael Girardi of Flushing and Andrew and Emil Girardi, both of California; and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was devoted to her children and family. Ms. Owen also loved to dance, cook and attend the Grace Assembly of God Church services.

During her employment years, she worked as a waitress for many restaurants in the Greene County and Hudson areas.

CATSKILL---Ray Ellsworth Powell, 79, of Catskill, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at his residence.

Born Dec. 5, 1921, in Greenville, he was the son of the late Ray C. Powell and Ruth Ellsworth Powell.

Mr. Powell was a retired manager of Columbia Auto Parts of Catskill. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific Theatre.

He was a member of the Catskill United Methodist Church and Honeyford Memorial Post No. 110 American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Sutherland, and cousins.

Mr. Powell was predeceased by his brother, Dean Powell and his sister, Catherine Powell.

Calling hours will be Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill.

GREENVILLE---Sumner R. Bates, 80, of Medusa, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany.

He was born in Medusa on Jan. 10, 1921, the son of the late Everett Bates and Beatrice (Hagadorn) Bates.

He was a graduate of Greenville Central Schools in 1938 and worked as a cheese maker. He served in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe during World War II, having entered the U.S. Army in 1943. He was discharged in 1945 with the rank of sergeant.

Mr. Bates was a rural mail carrier out of the Medusa Post Office for 29 years, retiring in 1979. He then drove a school bus for the Greenville Central School District for 16 years, retiring in 1995. He was an active ferrier from 1965 until 1995.

He also was a Cub Scout master for several years and helped the Town of Rensselaerville Ambulance Squad. He was a charter member of the Medusa Volunteer Fire Co., and was active as a fire policeman. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Medusa, the Greenville American Legion Post No. 291 and a charter member of the Tri-County Pony Club.

Mr. Bates also was formerly a member of the Carriage Association of America, the Pittsford Carriage Association, and American Driving Society, the Columbia County Coaching Society and the Saratoga Driving Association. An avid golfer since 1979, he had a hole in one.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Ethelyn (Roney) Bates of Medusa; a son, Albert Bates of Medusa; a grandson, Kevin Bates of Medusa; and a sister, Irene Williams of Willomar, Calif.

Calling hours will be 6 to 9 p.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home on West Road in Greenville. The Greenville American Legion Post No. 291 and the Medusa Volunteer Fire Company will conduct services at 7 and 7:30 p.m. respectively, at the funeral home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Born June 23, 1899, in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Henry Bossert and Margaret (Proepster) Bossert.

During her years of employment, she worked for Wallace Reid Insurance Company of New York City as a secretary.

Survivors include two dear friends, Mildred McManus of Cairo and Anne Pacifico of Round Top.

Mrs. Case was predeceased by her husband, Lyman G. Case, in 1935.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Richards Funeral Home at 383 Bross St. in Cairo.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo. Pastor Jeremiah Nunan will officiate.

CATSKILL---Elly Zielasko Knudsen, 91, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Columbia-Greene Long Term Care in Catskill, where she had been a patient since Oct. 4, 1999.

She was born Aug. 10, 1909, in Zerbst, Germany.

Mrs. Knudsen was a beautician in New York City, prior to her marriage to the late Volkert L. Knudsen on April 28, 1931.

Survivors include a son, Werner Knudsen of Catskill; a daughter, Eleanor Norman of Dobbs Ferry; three grandsons, Stewart Norman of Dobbs Ferry, Kurt Knudsen of Catskill and Jon Knudsen of Catskill; and a niece.

Mrs. Knudsen was predeceased by her husband, Volkert L. Knudsen, on April 11, 1995; and a brother, Walter Zielasko.

Cremation was conducted at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands under the direction of the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill.

A private committal service at the Town of Catskill Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.

Born May 31, 1937, in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Charles Carozza and Corinne (Caputo) Carozza.

Mrs. Schiavo was a registered nurse for Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson. She had been a resident of Catskill for many years.

Survivors include a daughter, Laura Guddemi, of Warwick; three sons, Nicholas Schiavo of, Norman, Okla., Charles Schiavo of Edmond, Okla. And Paul Schiavo of Phoenicia; three granddaughter, Nicole Schiavo, Linda Guddemi and Rebekah Guddemi; a brother, Dr. Charles Carozza of Cherry Valley; and a sister, Corinne Peretin.

Mrs. Schiavo was predeceased by her former husband, Nicholas Schiavo.

HANNACROIX---Ellen Schnare, 61, of Hannacroix, died Monday morning, Feb. 26, 2001, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany.

Born Sept. 13, 1939, in Tuxedo, she was the daughter of the late James DeGraw and Elizabeth (Molloy) DeGraw.

Mrs. Schnare was self-employed as a home health care provider.

She was married on July 12, 1969, in Greenville, to Frank Schnare, who survives at home.

Besides her husband, survivors include two daughters, Amanda Anderson of Earlton and Erin Schnare of Latham; and a granddaughter, Chelsea Anderson of Earlton.

A memorial service commemorating her life will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Sopris Funeral Home on Route 9W in Coxsackie. Rev. Richard Pruiksma will officiate. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

GHENT---Edward T. Hausman, 41, of Martindale Road, Philmont, died suddenly, Feb. 25, 2001, at Rolling Hills Mobile Park in Ghent.

He was born in Hudson, Oct. 20, 1959, the son of Dorothy (Kurys) Hausman of Philmont and the late Henry G. Hausman, Jr.

At the time of his death, Mr. Hausman owned and operated Body Unlimited Auto Restoration Co. of Philmont. He won numerous best-in-show and first-place awards for his restorations. The most prestigious of his awards included the 1994 National Triumph Register Best in Show; Best Paintwork, at 75^th Anniversary of Morgan in Malvern, England, 1984; Best in Show at Vintage Fall Festival in Lime Rock, Conn. 1983, 1987 and 1995; Second in Class for Morgan +4+ at Pebble Beach, Calif.; Best in Show British Invasion at Stowe, Vt. 2000; and he was twice featured on the cover of British Car Magazine.

Mr. Hausman was a member of the Craryville Rod and Gun Club and a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church in Philmont.

Besides his mother, he is survived by a sister, Christine Schaible of Hillsdale; three brothers, Paul Hausman of Chatham, John Hausman of Maryland and Raymond Hausman of Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Valenti & Richards Funeral Home at 700 Town Hall Drive in Greenport. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Pastor Raymond Ethier of the Sacred Heart Church of Philmont will officiate. Interment will be at the Sacred Heart Parish Cemetery.
