Loving mother
COXSACKIE—Flora “Pat” W. Mattice, 78, of 21 Church St., Coxsackie, died suddenly July 31, 2005 at Albany Medical Center.
She was born July 16, 1927 in Howells, NY, the daughter of the late Ralph and Flora (Judsen) Warren.
Mrs. Mattice has been a resident of Coxsackie for 55 years and loved gardening, floral arranging, reading and working word puzzles.
Survivors include a son, Floyd Mattice of Coxsackie; three daughters, Linda Bresee and Betty Higgins, both of Coxsackie; and Debra Lee of Albany; a brother, Ralph Warren of Walkill, NY; two sisters, Laura Warden of Kingston and Myrtle Dymond of Syndown, NY; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Mattice was predeceased by a brother, John Warren, and two sisters, Mae Albraze and Frances Wright.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the W.C. Brady‘s Sons Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie.
Funeral services will take place 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Wendy Steed of the First United Methodist Church officiating.
Interment will take place in the family plot of the Riverside Cemetery next to her late husband Floyd B. Mattice.

CATSKILL—Barbara Louise Shanks powers, 74, of 109 Wild Wing Park, Catskill, died suddenly Friday, July 29, 2005 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.
She was born Dec. 1, 1930 in Albany, the daughter of the late Clarence and Muriel (Gritmon) Colwell.
Mrs. Shanks Powers moved to Coxsackie as a young girl and was a graduate of Coxsackie High School. She attended Hartwick College in Oneonta and was a graduate of Columbia Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1950.
A devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, Barbara also known as “Shanksy” by her coworkers, was employed at the Greene County Memorial Hospital in Catskill, as a registered nurse for 35 years. There she served as a supervisor while pursuing her passion for obstetrical and emergency room nursing; she also did supervisory work at Columbia-Greene Long Term Care, Eden Park Nursing Home, and Hutton Nursing Home in Catskill. She was a member of the New York State Nursing Association, where she was a representative. For the past 15 years, she was employed as full-time private duty nurse in Boston, Mass.
She enjoyed baking and owned and operated “The Little Cake Shop” from her home, which specialized in wedding and special occasion cakes.
She enjoyed organic gardening, was an accomplished seamstress, and loved to shop for, and give, to her family and friends.
Survivors include six children, Dr. Larry Shanks and wife Robin of Molene, Il, Linda Walter, R.N. and husband, Gene of Boston, Rick Shanks and wife Sherry of Catskill, Mark Shanks and wife Laurie of Apalachin, NY, Lisa Shanks and partner Michael Schumacher of Catskill, and Christopher Shanks and wife Lynn of South Glens Falls, two sisters, Marilyn Ferro and husband Salvatore of Catskill; Clancy Colwell and wife Ann of Hillsboro, NC; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; dear friends, Janet and Lyle Brandow and Gertrude Os, all of Catskill.
Mrs. Shanks Powers was predeceased by her husband E. Raymond Shanks on SEPT. 9, 1995.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.
Funeral services will be 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, followed by an 11 a.m. service at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Catskill.
Interment will follow in Catskill Rural Cemetery.

AMON D. HOLT
Beloved husband and father
COPAKE—Amon D. Holt, 67, of Lakeview Road, Copake, died Sunday, July 24, 2005 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.
Born May 25, 1938 in Fairfax, AL, he was the son of the late Wesley D. and Velma (Bailey) Holt.
Mr. Holt worked for the Taconic State Park in the maintenance department until his retirement in 1999. He served in the U.S. Navy for 22 years. On Jan. 22, 1975 in Coxsackie he married Joanne M. (Bonafide) Holt.
Survivors include his wife, Joanne M. Holt, of Coxsackie; daughter, Terri Lynn Veatch of Bloomfield, IN; two grandchildren, Jon Daniel and Jessica Veatch; and two nieces, Melissa and Jennifer Miller, both of Copake.
Funeral services were held July 28, 2005 at the Peck and Peck Funeral Home, Route 22, Copake with full military honors.
Interment was held in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Catskill.

Beloved son
SAUGERTIES—Gerald Vincent “Jerry” Mortarotti, 21, of Saugerties, died Sunday, July 31, 2005, at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston from anaphylactic shock following a bee sting.
Born Mar. 27, 1984, he was the son of Ernest and Veronica Burton Mortarotti.
He graduated from Saugerties High School with a Regents Diploma in 2002 and was employed by Catskill Fence Installation Inc. for the past two years. His hobbies included hiking, camping, auto mechanics, and growing exotic plants. His many goals and life ambitions will remain unfulfilled because of this tragedy.
Survivors include his mother, Veronica Burton Mortarotti of Saugerties; father, Ernest Mortarotti of Kerhonkson; step-mother, Christina Mortarotti of Kerhonkson; sister, Patricia C. Mortarotti of Saugerties; fiancé, Colleen Shocklee of Saugerties; grandfather, Harry Burton of Saugerties; grandmother, Evelyn Furguson of Long Island; best friend, Daniel Jones of New Hampshire; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held Saturday, August 13 at 72 Kenozia Lake Road in Shokan.
Private cremation was conducted at the Albany Rural Crematorium under the direction of the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Retired supervisor of bus maintenance for Laidlaw
ACRA—James Ballard, 84, of Acra, died Tuesday, August 2, at Columbia Memorial Hospital Hospice following a severe stroke suffered at his home on Thursday, July 28, 2005.
Born Aug. 12, 1920 in Gilboa, NY, he was the son of Vernon and Elda (Kniskern) Ballard.
Mr. Ballard grew up on the family farm in Middlefield, NY, and moved to Greene County as a young man where he worked at Parks Dairy in Coxsackie. He later became employed at Kelsey Bus Lines which then became Mountain View Bus Lines and School Transit Inc. Since 1959 he was the supervisor of bus maintenance of the school Transit Division, which became Laidlaw in 1986 overseeing nine school bus garages in Catskill, Coxsackie and surrounding towns, until his retirement in 1988. His main garage was on Brown’s Crossing where he was known and respected for his excellence in his work.
Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Elizabeth Pomeroy Ballard, three sons: Robert Ballard of Catskill and his companion, Linda Dunn, Richard Ballard of Catskill and his wife Arlene, George Ballard of Clearwater, FL, and his companion Barbara Smith, stepchildren, Denia Phillips of Sunnyvale, CA, Donald Phillips of Napanoch and his wife, JoAnn, George Phillips of Broadalbin and his wife Julie, Dianna Mabb of Stottville and her husband Michael, Roger, a sister-in-law, Hilda Ballard, nephews, Theodore and Desmond Ballard, 18 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and four great-nephews.
Mr. Ballard was predeceased by his mother in 1964 and his father in 1966, a sister, Elizabeth Ballard Shaver in 1975, by his brother, George Ballard in 1990 and by his ex-wife Clarbell Willt Ballard in 1991.

Outreach worker for Schoharie County
COBLESKILL—Marion B. Churchill, 90, died Tuesday, Aug 2, 2005 at Eden Park Healthcare Center in Cobleskill.
Mrs. Churchill was born Dec. 14, 1914 in Jefferson, the daughter of Ray and Elizabeth (Cummings) Briggs.
She was raised in Schenectady, married William G. Churchill March 14, 1936 and moved back to Jefferson.
Mrs. Churchill was employed as an outreach worker for Schoharie County Community Action Program in Richmondville.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Jefferson where she taught Sunday School for 10 years. She was a member of Leila Chapter of the Eastern Star in Jefferson and served as Past Matron. She was a daughter of the Eastern Star in Onistagrawa Triangle of Schenectady.
For many years she and her husband wintered at Good Samaritan Village in Kissimmee, FL.
Survivors include her husband William G. Churchill; their children, Joan and Jerry Diamond of Cobleskill and Richard and Rosalie Churchill of Catskill; two sisters, Ellen Soulla of Schenectady and Evelyn Koch of Winter Springs, FL, six grandchildren: Kathy Diamond-Brayton, William Diamond (JoAnn), Eric Diamond, Randy Churchill (Janis), Laura Churchill and husband James Hutchins and Brad Churchill (Tracey) ; 13 great-grandchildren: Zak and All Brayton, Carly and Sylvi Diamond, Trevor and Hanna Diamond, am and Clara Churchill, Alex, Zoe and Charlotte Hutchins and William and Anna Churchill.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7 at the United Methodist Church in Jefferson with the Rev. Frank Adams officiating.
Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Jefferson.
There will be no calling hours.

Clerk for Court of Claims
ATHENS—George J. Deyo, 57, of Athens died July 31, 2005 in Athens.
He was born in Catskill June 27, 1948 and is the son of Mildred L. (Frisbee) Deyo of Athens and the late George W. Deyo.
Mr. Deyo was employed as a clerk typist for the New York State Court of Claims in Albany.
He was a lifelong resident of Athens and loved to listen to drum corps music.
Besides his mother, survivors include a brother, Wayne and his wife Louise Deyo of Athens, two nieces, Dylan and Gianna Deyo of Athens, s nephew Stephen Morelli of Eaglesville, PA, and many cousins.
Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8 at the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Athens with Pastor Harrison Putnam from St. John’s UCC in St. John’s, PA officiating.
Interment of his cremains will follow in the family plot of the Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery the day of the graveside service.
Private cremation took place Thursday at the Albany Rural Crematorium.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the W.C. Brady’s Sons Inc., 97 Mansion Street, Coxsackie.

Seamstress
MOUNT MARION—Dorotha M. “Doll” DuBois, 93, of Plattekill Drive, died Tuesday at her residence.
Born Dec. 25, 1911 in Roslyn, VA, she was the daughter of the late William and Nettie Mae Bemmell Benson.
An area resident since 1954 she previously resided in Roslyn, VA.
She was employed for many years as a seamstress in several area dress factories.
Survivors include a granddaughter, Debra Abreu Moesle of Mt. Tremper; a great-grandson, John Paul Abreu; and her caregiver, Evelyn Chase of Mt. Marion. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Mrs. DuBois was predeceased by her husband, John E. DuBois in 1987, a daughter, Gloria DuBois in 1998, two sisters, Virginia Mae Martalto and Violet Caboni.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, corner of John and Lafayette Streets.
Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in
Saugerties.

FISHER
Beloved husband and son
WESTERLO—Robert Douglas (Bob) Fisher, 46, formerly of Westerlo, died suddenly in Barcelona, Spain on July 22, 2005.
Born in Albany on Dec. 22, 1958, he was the son of Walter and Patricia Fisher of Westerlo.
Bob lived a lot of life in 46 short years. One of his proudest achievements was walking the entire Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. He graduated from Greenville Central School and also graduated with honors from Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA. He then went to work on many films as a sound/boom operator.
He met his wife, Caitlin, while they were working on a film together in Barcelona in 2004. They were married on June 17, 2005 and were living there when Bob was stricken.
Survivors include his wife, Caitlin, Acheson Fisher and his twin stepdaughters, Oenone and Danai, all of Barcelona; his parents, his brother, Michael Snyder (Vaunda) of Virginia Beach, VA; his second parents, Denis and Noni Acheson of London, England; and many aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews who are shocked and saddened by his death.
A memorial service was held simultaneously in Barcelona and in Westerlo at his parents home on Monday, July 25 at 10 a.m. The Westerlo service was conducted by Pastor Steve Peiffer of Dormansville Methodist Church.

WILLIAM G. WOODWARD
U.S. Navy veteran
KEENE, NH—William G. Woodward, 79, of Greenwood Ave., Keene, died peacefully July 30, 2005 at the Good Shepherd Healthcare Center in Jaffrey, NH surrounded by his loving friends.
Mr. Woodward was born June 29, 1926 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of William J. Woodward and Marcella (Garrison) Woodward.
Mr. Woodward moved to Minnesota at age 12 where he attended Sount West School and graduated in 1944. Among his classmates were the Arness brothers, James and Peter (Graves) later known for their movie and TV roles.
Immediately after graduation, he entered the Navy and was chosen for Officer’s Candidate School, eventually achieving the rank of Lieutenant J.G. He had the distinction of serving on the USS Darter, the first US submarine to submerge to the depth of 800 feet. After the war, he attended Technical School in Illinois earning a degree in engineering. Later he earned a Master’s Degree in engineering from California Polytechnic Institute.
In 1949 he married Elizabeth Lyzcko, a native of Amsterdam. Their only son, Jefferey died in 1994.
Mr. Woodward spent his entire career at General Electric Company while living in the San Francisco Bay area. Gerry and his wife were involved in education activities most of their adult lives.
He and his wife relocated to Keene, NH in 2000. He was an exemplary husband and father devoting his final years of his life to the care of his beloved wife, Elizabeth, who succumbed to Alzheimer’s disease after several years. He was well loved by all who knew him and was great friend, neighbor, business associate and casual acquaintance. While he was a man of many accomplishments, he seldom spoke of his own achievement.
Survivors include a brother, Wallace Woodward of California, a few cousins including Fr. Joseph Santay, CSPV of Round Top.
A Requiem Mass will be offered 10 a.m. Thursday Aug. 4 at St. Joseph’s Novitiate in Round Top.
He will be interred at St. Joseph Novitiate in Round Top.

Wonderful mother and grandmother
PURLING—Katherine Moffit, 92, of Purling died Aug. 4, 2005.
Born Katherine Agnes Balwin on Oct. 17, 1912 in Purling, where she lived her entire life, she was the daughter of Kathryn (Bouck) Baldwin and Bruce Baldwin.
She spent many years helping to run Baldwin’s Hotel in Purling until it sold in the 1940’s. For many years she delivered newspapers in Cairo and all around the Round Top resorts.
She turned her living room into a soda fountain luncheonette while her husband Edward served in Patton’s 3rd Army during WW11. After his return, she concentrated on being a wonderful daughter, mother and grandmother for the rest of her days.
Survivors include her daughter, Kathryn Mardon and son in law Kent Mardon, grandchildren Katherine and Michael Fiore, great-grandchildren Kathryn (Katie) McBride and Clayton McBride, several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Moffit was predeceased by her husband Edward and her son, Edward, Jr., grandson Frank James Fiore and all her brothers and sisters.

EARLTON—Ian Douglas Rivenburg, 17, of Earlton, died Aug. 3, 2005.
Born Jan. 2, 1988 he was the cherished son of James and Michele Rivenburg and the beloved brother of Brandon Rivenburg.
Ian was entering his senior year at Coxsackie Athens Central School. He was very active in the sports program playing golf, basketball and baseball.
Ian was a remarkable young man who always inspired those around him. He was a team player who not only was talented, but who could laugh at himself. Ian made friends wherever he went, even of the opposing teams.
“E” will be missed by all his family, the E-town Crew, Rene’, Keeko, Jedi, Kahlua, and Payton and everyone else whose lives he touched. We know that he is up in heaven making someone laugh and cheering them up; the same as he did while he was here with us. Laughter followed him everywhere. Without a doubt, son, you will be with us always and forever.
Calling hours will be 1 to 5 p.m., Aug 6, at the Sopris-Murray Funeral Home, 11877 Route 9W, Coxsackie.
The funeral service will be 7 p.m. Saturday at the First Reformed Church, Mansion Street, Coxsackie. The Rev. Paul Peters will be officiating.

ATHENS—Hugo J. Simek, 83, of West Athens, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2005 at his residence.
Born in the Czech Republic on March 2, 1922, he had been a long time resident of the Town of Athens.
He was married on June 8, 1974 in Athens to Nancy S. (McKinley) Simek who survives.
Mr. Simek was an accountant for many years for the Swingline Corporation in New York City prior to moving to Athens.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his stepson William (Brit) Etzold of Stillwater, MN.
Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Sopris-Murray Funeral Home, 11877 Route 9W, Coxsackie.

Navy veteran
TANNERSVILLE—Marcello Robert Calligaro, 51, of Tannersville died Sunday July 31, 2005 at the Calvary Hospital in the Bronx after a 10 year battle with a malignant brain tumor.
Marcello grew up in Tannersville. At 18 years of age he joined the Navy, where he received his High School Equivalency.
He spent many years living abroad, in Italy, Africa, and Saudi Arabia. Once he returned from overseas, he went to work as a correction officer at Rikers Island, NYC, from which he had to retire because of his brain tumor.
Marcello was known for his love of the mountains, fast cars, and good Italian food, but most of all for the love of his daughter.
He is survived by his mother, Yolanda Calligaro; and his sister, Lisa Calligaro of Tannersville; his father, Ali Calligaro of Schoharie; and a sweet, wonderful daughter, Amanda Blandford of New Jersey. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins who live in Italy and France.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service to be held at Aston-Basagic Funeral Home, Route 23A, Hunter, on Sunday, Aug 7, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Mass will be held on Monday, Aug 8 at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church, North Lake Road, Haines Falls.

SAUGERTIES—Rose M. Scarselli, 91, of Glasco died Friday, August 5, 2005 at the Kingston City Hospital.
Born April 30, 1914 in Katsbaan, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Gaetana Auricchio Pesce.
A lifelong resident of the area, she owned and operated the Delta Farm on Route 32 in Glasco for over 40 years. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s RC Church in Glasco.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles in 1994. Survivors include two sons, Anthony of Shreveport, LA and Charles A. Scarselli of Saugerties; two daughter, Marie R. Becker of Saugerties and Regina Zaetz of Cary, NC; three brothers; Joseph, Fred, and Gennaro Pesce, all of Saugerties; three sisters: Philomena Chiarlante of Glasco, Carmela Aldorasi of Long Island City and Mary Aldorasi of Long Island City; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral procession will form at 9:15 a.m. Monday, August 8 at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, corner of John and Lafayette Streets, and proceed to St. Joseph’s RC Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m.
Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Barclay
Heights.

Loved art and gardening
GREENVILLE—Belva M. Poggi, 68, of Albany, died at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital on Aug. 6, 2005. She was born in West Sand Lake on April 11, 1937, daughter of the late Rowland and Esther (Fredenburg) Pabst. She was a registered nurse starting out at the Albany Medical Center and Albany Memorial Hospital, then working at several area nursing homes. She loved art, nature and gardening, and was an avid reader. She was devoted to the care of others and a friend to all she met. She will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.
Surviving are two daughters, Judy Franco ( and her husband Steven) of Salem, CT, and Joanne Quirk ( and her husband Joseph) of Half Moon Bay, CA; two sons, Jeffrey Poggi ( and his wife Elizabeth) of Norton, MA, and James Poggi (and his wife Dawn) of Rochester; 11 grandchildren; a sister, Beverly June Bolton of Madras, OR; nine nieces and nephews; a sister in- law, Jane Pabst of Guilderland ( and her former husband John A. Poggi). She was predeceased by a brother, Rowland J. Pabst.

FREEHOLD—Gennaro George (Jerry) Mastro, 92, of Mesa, AZ, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005 at his home in Mesa.
He was born June 22, 1913 in Brooklyn to the late Francesco and Mariannina (DiCristoforo) Mastrodicasa.
Mr. Mastro was a longtime resident of Freehold and retired from American Valve Co. in Coxsackie.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and an usher at St. John the Baptist Church for over 20 years. He moved to Mesa four years ago.
Survivors include a son, Paul Mastro of Little Rock, Ark., grandchildren, Lisa Dessecker of Baltimore, MD, and Dr. Michael Mastro of Alexandria, VA, great-grandchildren Thomas and Timothy Dessecker and David Mastro, and 12 nieces and nephews.
Funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug 13 at St. John the Baptist Church in Greenville and interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Catskill, with his wife and daughter who predeceased him.

FREEHOLD—Thomas L. Teich, 82, of Freehold, died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005, at the Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.
Born in Leeds on Aug. 4, 1923, he was the son of the late Harry C. and Emily J. (Miedling) Teich.
Mr. Teich was a graduate of Catskill High School and St. Lawrence University with a B.S. in chemistry. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity at St. Lawrence University. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WW11 as an aide to Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower in the European Theater. He was the proprietor of the family business, Teich’s General Store in Leeds. He retired as the director of Civil Defense for Greene County, served as trustee of the Leeds School. Was a volunteer fireman with the Leeds Hose Company and a member of the Leeds Dutch Reformed Church.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie (Seaman) Teich of Freehold; a son, Thomas Frederick Teich of Freehold; a daughter Debra Ann Teich of Smithburg, MD; a brother, Harry Charles Teich of Hartwick; two sisters, Adine Teich Wilder of Burlington, NC, and Jane Teich Rich of Carthage; and 13 nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by an infant son.

Born May 26, 1929 in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Joseph E. and Janet Walker Stevenson.
She was a graduate of St. Michael’s Parochial School in Brooklyn and Bay Ridge High School.
She was a former member St. Michael’s Prayer Musical Theater Group. A Saugerties area resident for over 50 years she enjoyed ceramics.
Survivors include her husband, James K. Ziegler, with whom she recently celebrated her 54th wedding anniversary; a daughter, Greta Merritt of Kingston; a brother, Gerard Tiernan of Staten Island; two sisters, Marie Collier of Whitting, NJ and Elizabeth Galvin of Woodstock, VA; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Ziegler was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Tiernan.
Her funeral procession will form 11:45 a.m. Thursday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, corner of John and Lafayette Streets, Saugerties, thence to St. John the Evangelist RC Church in Centerville, where a 12:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by the Rev. Msgr. William Williams.

Born in Freehold Nov. 21, 1914, he was the son of the late Harmon and Ethel (Going) Becker.
Mr. Becker had retired from Hannay Reels, Inc. Well known in Southern Albany and and Greene counties, “Bud” could fix about anything. If it had run at one time, give it to “Bud” and it would run again. He will be missed by all the locals who would bring things to be fixed and repaired. His soft demeanor and easy going way will be missed by all who knew him. When able, he could be seen riding his motorcycle and enjoying the company of his many friends. He was a charter member of the Freehold Vol. Fire Co. and the Freehold C.C. Church.
Survivors include his daughter, Sandra Noirot and her husband Everett (Skip) of Freehold; three grandchildren, Walter Noirot and his wife Mary Jean, Pamela Chase and her husband Gary, Gerald Noirot and his fiancé Lisa; two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Parker Chase; two nephews, Fred and Thomas Kemper; and two nieces, Kathleen Peck and Eileen Joseph.

Mr. Payne was born Jan. 6, 1929 in Ravena to the late Edward J. and Beulah Terns Payne.
He was a veteran of World War 11 serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Missouri.
Mr. Payne was a member of ARK Lodge3 No. 48 F & AM of Coxsackie.
Survivors include his wife Patricia A. Barber Payne, two daughters, Rebecca Chast of Athens, Deborah Sweet of Castleton, a son, Kenneth W. PALENVILLE—Harrison Somers, 72, of Palenville, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005 at Columbia Memorial Long Term Care in Catskill, where he had been a patient since July 7, 2005.
Mr. Somers was born in Detroit, MI on July 8, 1933 to the late Francis and Elvira DeBoever Peeters.
Mr. Somers was an entertainer on Broadway in New York City and member of the Actors Equity. He retired to Palenville in 1994 and was employed by Greene County as a civil servant with CSEA prior to his illness.
Survivors include his companion of 40 years, Joseph “Jay” Pouhe of Palenville; a sister Marguerite D’Agnese; two brothers, Marvin and Frank Peeters, all of Detroit; as well as several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Private cremation was conducted on Thursday, Aug. 11 at Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands under the direction of the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home in Catskill.
A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the

Born in New York City, NY, Aug. 4, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Arnold Smith and Alice (Sedgwick) Proudfoot.
She was a graduate of Cathedral School of St. Mary in Garden City, NY in 1931 and from Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA in 1935 with a BA in mathematics. Prior to her marriage, she was employed by the Ford Instrument Co. engineers for the US Dept. of Naval Ordinance. In 1938, she married in the Church of the Gardens in Forest Hills, NY to Maxwell S. Palmer of Forest Hills and Greenville. Her sons Phillip P. (1941) and M.
Sheridan Jr. (1944) were born in Mineola, NY. The family moved from Port Washington, NY to the Palmer Family Homestead in Greenville in 1945. She was a member of the So. Westerlo Congregational Christian Church and its Women’s Fellowship and served 22 years as its Missions Secretary. She joined the Clematis Garden Club of Greene and Albany counties in 1947 and served as its historian for life. She was a member of the Capita; District Wellesley Club. She was a life member of the Federated Garden Clubs of New York State. She was a former member of the Normanside Country Club.
Survivors include her son, M. Sheridan Palmer and his wife of McSherrystown, PA; grandchildren, Addison, Jesse and Sheridan Palmer and Rachel (Palmer) Davis and her great-grandchildren, Elliot Davis and Maxwell Palmer.
She is predeceased by her husband, Maxwell S. Palmer, and a son, Phillip P. Palmer.

Chad Lee Dickson, 28, of 5 Rail Road Avenue, Coxsackie, died suddenly Aug. 13, 2005 in the Emergency Room at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.
He was born Dec. 7, 1976 in Catskill to Walter Parks and Cynthia Dickson.
Mr. Dickson was a lifetime resident of Coxsackie and a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church of Coxsackie.
He was a member of Coxsackie Hose Co. No. 3 and a member of the Coxsackie Rescue Squad. At the time of his death he was employed as a tractor trailer driver for Hauser Trucking Co. of Cohoes.
He loved collecting die cast models of cars and trucks, and loved the outdoors and driving big rigs.
Survivors include his wife Terri and two children Meagan and Alivia all of Coxsackie, paternal grandparents, Eugene and Ruth A. Dickson of Coxsackie, maternal grandmother Mabel Windbush and many cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

She was a resident of Tannersville for over 40 years. She owned and operated The Studio, a beautiful gift shop, which also became a gathering place for the mountaintop.
She managed and was the creative inspiration behind Pratt’s Place. She was known for her innovation, creativity and generosity. She supported many causes including the arts, AIDS, and the Catholic Church.
Survivors include a son, Raymond and his wife Gina Sayour of New Orleans, LA, a daughter, Jeanette and husband Anthony Aprilo of Saugerties, three brothers, Paul Sayour, John Sayour, Jimmy Sayour, a sister, Mary Jane Goshen, and a granddaughter, Gabriella Sayour, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends.

SAUGERTIES—Donald J. Rothrock Sr., 83, of Village Drive, died Sunday, Aug.14, 2005 at the Ferncliff Nursing Home in Rhinebeck, NY.
Born Dec. 17, 1921 in Jersey City, NJ, he was the son of the late Lester and Margaret Mae Harris Rothrock.
A veteran of World War 11, he served in the United States Marine Corps as a staff sergeant serving in the Philippines.
He was a graduate of Saugerties High School, Class of 1939. He was employed as an auto mechanic and worked for many years at Byrne Chevrolet and Thorpe Pontiac and Cadillac.
He was one of the founders of the Woodstock Motor Club of Woodstock in 1954. He was a life member of the club and renowned for his enthusiasm for antique automobiles. He was a 50 year member and past commander of the Saugerties American Legion Post 72 and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5034.
Survivors include a son Donald J. Rothrock Jr. of Townville, SC, and one daughter, Carolyn A. Maines of Malden on Hudson, NY, four grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Rothrock was predeceased by his wife Mildred E. Schoonmaker Rothrock in November 2003, his grandparents Chester and Frances Hyde, Harris Bloom, who raised him, and a daughter-in- law, Barbara Rothrock.

TANNERSVILLE—Natividad Raquel Mori, 49, a native of Peru and a resident of Tannersville, NY, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2005 after her struggle with breast cancer.
She was born Dec. 25, 1955, the daughter of Jose and Raquel Pagan in Callao, Lima, Peru.
Natividad came to the United States with her family in 1993 in search of a better life for her children. While here, she made her mark by becoming a loving foster parent, a certified teacher’s assistant, as well as a Sunday school teacher.
She did all this and still had time to raise three great boys who love her very much. Her family and friends will miss her warm presence. She was a cherished wife, friend, and mother, as well as a woman of valor, grace, and dignity.
She is survived by her husband, Juan and their three boys, Hunter, Juan Jr., and Andres, and her siblings, two brothers and four sisters, who reside in Peru.

PHILMONT—Philip “Po” Mossman, 75, of Philmont, NY, died early Wednesday morning, August 17, 2005, at his residence.
He was born in Philmont, June 23, 1930, and was the son of the late Philip W. and Lillian (Rockefeller) Mossman.
Mr. Mossman was mayor of Philmont from April 1987 to May 1995 and from April 1991 to the present.
He and his wife Marie owned and operated Nick’s Restaurant, Main Street, Philmont.
He was a retired Deputy Superintendent for the Town of Claverack DPW. He served his country in the US Army, serving during the Korean Conflict.
He was Past Adjutant of the Columbia County American Legion, a 50-plus year member and Past Commander for the Minkler-Seery Post # 252 American Legion of Philmont, a 53 year member of the Philmont Fire Company, a member of the Hudson Elks Lodge, a longstanding, dedicated member of the Columbia County Republican Club, a past member of the Craryville Rod and Gun Club, Past Vice Chairman, Present Vice Chairman, and Charter Member of the Claverack Republican Club, and member and past President of the Mohawk-Hudson Village Officials Organization.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers, Richard, Louis, Ellwood, and Clinton Mossman, two sisters, Marion Pulver and Jean Mossman, and grandson Christopher Cutler.
Survivors include his wife, Marie A. (Guzy) Mossman of Philmont, three sons, Philip N. Mossman and wife Malia of Philmont, Nicholas P. Mossman of Philmont, and Paul W. Mr. Burke was a veteran of the English Navy and also was a graduate from a technical college in Ireland. He was employed at SUNY New Paltz as a plumber and electrician. He also was employed as a bartender in the Catskill Mountain resort area.

In addition to his wife and father, survivors include his stepdaughter Sherrie and her husband J.D. Donnelly of Coxsackie; a grandson, Shawn Donnelly and two step-grandsons, Jason and Evan Donnelly; a brother Kenneth Maurer of Plattsburgh; a sister, Jean Mattice of Coxsackie; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Grammas was predeceased by his brother Ernest Maurer.

Mrs. Boyle was retired from a career in nursing, having worked in hospitals and nursing homes in England, Canada and New York.
She loved knitting, crocheting, sewing, photography, gardening and most of all spending time with her grandchildren.

Born April 19, 1933 in Troy, she was the daughter of the late Ivan and Eleanor (Hahn) Paupst.
Mrs. Sullivan was co-owner of the Thomas L. Gunning Collection Agency.
She graduated from Saratoga High School in 1951.
Mrs. Sullivan was a member of the Hudson Business and Professional Women and the Hudson Elks Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors are two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Eleanor and James R. Sweet and Kathryn Ann Sullivan all of Hudson; three grandsons, and three granddaughters.
Mrs. Sullivan was predeceased by her husband Edward D. “Sully” Sullivan, Jr.

ATLANTA, GA—Joseph W. Veverka, 95, of Atlanta, GA., formerly of South Cairo died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, GA, after a brief illness.
Born in New York City March 18, 1910, he was the son of the late Joseph and Clara (Bruckman) Veverka.
Mr. Veverka lived in South Cairo from 1936 until he moved to Florida, and then to Atlanta, GA. He and his wife owned and operated McCabes White Elk Resort in South Cairo. During WW11 he served with the US Army. He was also past commander and a life member of the Cairo American Legion Post # 983. This organization will hold services in his memory Friday evening at the funeral home. He was an avid coin collector and loved fishing and hunting.
Survivors include a daughter, Mr. Julio (Margaret-Peggy) Vasquez of Atlanta, GA; daughter-in-law, Mrs. William (Alma) Veverka; five grandchildren, Margaret Ann (Peggy) Vasquez, Michelle Vasquez, William Veverka, Jr. and his wife Patty, Allen Veverka and his wife Diane, and Janice Hull and her husband Paul; ten great grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his son, William Veverka; and four sisters, Florence, Lillian, Helen and Pauline.

She was a homemaker and a communicant of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church of Catskill, the church’s Rosary Society, Altar Guild, Mother’s Club and the Third Order of Franciscans, and the Women’s League of the American Cancer Society.
At St. Patrick’s Church in Catskill on June 19, 1932, she married Anthony J. Antonelli who predeceased her on Feb. 11, 1978.
Survivors include three sons: John Antonelli, Robert and his wife Mary Ellen Antonelli, and Gene Antonelli, all of Catskill: one daughter, Frances Scott of Athens; two brothers, Anthony DeBenedictus of Old Bridge, NJ and Frank De Benedictus of Catskill; a sister Margaret Kordick of Catskill; six grandchildren: Robert Antonelli, Jr., Kimberly Rizzo, Michael Antonelli, Lynn Antonelli, Mark Antonelli, and Anthony Scott; and two great-grandchildren: Abigail Antonelli and Matthew Antonelli.

ALBANY—Robert W. Cooper, 79, of Westerlo, NY died suddenly at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, on Aug. 24, 2005.
He was born in Jersey City, NJ on April 10, 1926, son of the late Henry and Alice (Risen) Cooper.
Robert was a retired manager for A & P Supermarkets, having managed stores in Elsmore, Coxsackie, and Ravena.
Serving his country during WW11 in the US Army, he was a highly decorated veteran. He served in Central Europe and the Rhineland, and received the Bronze Star Medal, The European Middle Eastern Campaign, Good Conduct Medal, and the WW11 Victory Medal.
His unit, Company A, 778th Tank Battalion, received a Unit Citation for their part in repelling the German 82nd Corps offensive to retain vital ground near Lampaden. To quote the citation, “On 6 March 1945 to 7 March 1945, these units, exhibiting unwavering fortitude and indomitable tenacity, successfully protected the division bridgehead in the face of overwhelming odds.”
Bob will also be remembered as the Hilltown TV repairman an active Republican Party member. He was also a member of the American Legion.
He was predeceased by two brothers, George Cooper and John Cooper.
He is survived by his wife, Marion (Dunbar) Cooper; his sons Robert H. Cooper and his wife Carol of Westerlo, and Richard J. Cooper of Westerlo; daughter Gail Bushnell of Berne; grandchildren Wayne Cooper, Lori Grebe and her husband Matthew, Steven Cooper and his wife Mary, Thomas and Allison Bushnell; six great-grandchildren; brother Edward Cooper of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

Born May 2, 1947 in Catskill, he was the son of the late Joseph and Louise (Chewens) Rowe.
Mr. Rowe graduated from Pine Bush High School, class of 1966. He served in the US Army from 1968 to 1971. He was an employee of Verizon in Catskill for more than 33 years prior to his retirement. He was a long-time member of the Catskill Golf Club, also a member of various Catskill baseball and softball leagues, the Wednesday Night Men’s Bowling League and the Catskill Elks Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Rene L. (Rider) Rowe of Catskill; a son, Joseph Breslin Rowe Jr., of Parris Island, SC and Catskill; tow daughters, Georgia Houghtaling of Round Top and Sara Rowe of Catskill; two sisters, Patricia Leach of Catskill and Joan Quinn of Schoharie;four grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

GREENVILLE—Ralph Britton Sr., 86, of Rensselaerville, died at St. Peter’s Hospital on Aug. 25, 2005.
He was born in Westerlo on April 1, 1919, son of the late William and Cora (Peck) Britton.
Mr. Britton served in the US Army from January 1941 through May 1945, and was a corporal in Company E 106th Infantry, 27th Division. He served three years in the Pacific, Majuro in the Marshall Islands, Battle of Saipan in the Marianas, and Espirito Santo, New Hebrides. He received the Bronze Star and was given an award for Conspicuous Service by the State of New York.
Following his military service, Mr. Britton worked at the Huyck Mill in Rensselaer as a weaver. He and his wife Magdalena operated Britton’s Soda Fountain in Rensselaerville for nearly 20 years. He was postmaster in Rensselaerville for 26 years. He was a charter member of the Rensselaerville Volunteer Fire Company, serving as treasurer for 37 years. He was also a member of the 27th Division Associated Post 11 for many years.
He enjoyed woodworking, caning chairs, refinishing furniture and bird watching. Family and friends were important to him and he was always ready to lend a helping hand.
Surviving are his devoted wife of 59 years, Magdalena (Preisner) Britton; his loving children, Ralph Britton Jr. and his wife Patricia of Ravena, Eileen Britton of Oak Hill, and Diana Fritz and her husband Kenneth of Rensselaerville; his dear grandchildren, Brian and Michael Britton, Kimberly Henlin and her husband David, John Kotuc, Stephanie Stepp, and Seth and Daniel Fritz; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was predeceased by his brothers, LeRoy Britton and Sanford Britton, and a sister, Marjorie Moore.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 9 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, Cairo, with the Rev. Fr. J. Nunan, pastor, the celebrant.
Interment will follow in the family plot of the New St. Raymond’s Cemetery in the Bronx next to her late husband Joseph, who predeceased her on Aug. 21, 1989.
Locally she is survived by her daughter, Carole Lhotan; and a son, James Codeghini of the Bronx.

ATHENS—John T. (Jack) Henderson, 75 of 551 Schoharie Turnpike, Athens, died Aug. 26, 2005 at Albany Medical Center after an illness, becoming ill in May.
He was born in New York City on Aug. 25, 1930, and was the son of the late Thomas and Alice (Bellneir) Henderson.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church, Athens, with Fr. Vaughn the celebrant.
Interment will follow in the Old Athens Rural Cemetery, in the family plot, with full military honors.
Prior to his retirement, he was a corrections officer at the Coxsackie Correctional Facility and the Greene Correctional Facility for 35 years.
During the Korean War, he served his country in the US Army, receiving an honorable discharge.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann A. EAST JEWETT—Donald Robert Legg, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005.
Born Oct. 30, 1922 in Haines Falls, he was the son of Raymond Legg and Margaret Benjamin (Legg) O’Bryan.
Mr. Legg graduated from Cobleskill Ag. and Tech. in 1944. He was employed by IBM, Kingston for 26 years. A former Boy Scout leader of the Rip Van Winkle Council Troop 55, East Jewett, he was a life member and last surviving founding member of the East Jewett Fire Department. He was also a member and faithful attendee of the East Jewett United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Myrtle Firmalino Legg; daughter Carol Miles of East Jewett; three grandchildren and their spouses, Shelly and Edward Moscato of King Ferry, NY, David and Kristen Miles of Stone Ridge, NY, and Nathan and Kristy Miles of Lexington; five great-grandchildren, Michael, Timothy, Christopher, and Jeremy Moscato, and Julie Miles; three nephews, George, Gerry and Jeffrey Loucks.

Born May 3, 1977 in Catskill, he graduated with honors from Cairo-Durham High School and received a degree in computer technology while living in Cary.
He was a quadriplegic who didn’t let his condition stoop him from enjoying life. He communicated with a mouthpiece, and he was an expert player of video games.
He was an accomplished writer, musician and songwriter. He will always be remembered as a devoted son, brother, uncle, grandson and friend.
Survivors include his mother, JoAnn Marie Walther of Cary, NC; his father, James DiStefano of Catskill; his sisters, Tamra Blake of Raleigh, NC; MeAne DiStefano of Lynbrook and JeLan DiStefano of Oakdale; his brother, Daniel Blake of Stafford, VA; his maternal grandparents, John and Josephine Johnson of Catskill; his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth VenDriesco of Leeds; two aunts, Nellie Peterson of Purling and Audrey Kay of St. Petersburg, FL; three nieces; three nephews; and many cousins.

SOUTH CAIRO—Sheldon Maben, 92, of South Cairo, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005 in Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill.
He was born on Aug. 25, 1913 on Mitchell Hollow Road in Windham to Grover S. Maben and Leone Sutton Gordon Maben.
Mr. Maben was employed by the Greene County Department of Social Services, also as a chef at the Pickwick Lodge in Round Top, and as an auctioneer at Starrs Auction.
He was a member of the Cairo Hose Company for 60 years, and a member of the Greene County Federation of Sportsmen, a member of the Stump Jumper Rod and Gun Club and a member of the Purling Rod and Gun Club.
He raised Cornish Bantam Hens and loved horse racing, especially the trotters.
Survivors include his sisters, Marjorie Morse and Elnora Mulford of Windham, his children, Nelson E. Maben of South Cairo, Roger W@. Maben and Arlene Teig of Cairo, Warren B. He was born Jan. 20, 1942 in Albany, son of the late James W. West, Sr. and Margaret (Buddenhagen) West.
Mr. West was in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Germany.
He was employed as a laborer with Old Castle Pre-Stressed Concrete until his retirement in January 2005.
Mr. West was a member of the Clark White American Legion Post 589. He enjoyed bowling and golfing. He loved gardening and was particularly proud of the Gladiolus he raised in his garden.
Survivors include his wife Sandra L. (Brandow) West of Medusa, his son, Curtis West and his wife Rose of Dunn, NC, six grandchildren, Nicole, Stephanie, Theodore, Veronica, Alexis, and Christina West and a sister Margaret Pearson and her husband John Of Indianola, IA.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville.
Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. prior to the service.
Interment will be 10 a.m. Friday in the Medusa Cemetery.

HARRIS WOLPIN
Loving brother
CATSKILL—Harris Wolpin, 71, of Red Apple Lane, Catskill, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Brooklyn on June 8, 1933, a son of the late Walter and Shirley Weissberg Wolpin.
For many years Mr. Wolpin lived in Wassaic. He moved to Ulster-Greene ARC’s McGiffert House in 1988. Mr. Wolpin was active in the ARC Day Habilitation Program in Catskill.
Surviving include a brother, Robert of Connecticut and many dear friends at Ulster-Greene ARC.
Funeral services will be conducted 12 p.m. Thursday at Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Avenue, Kingston, cantor Robert Cohen will officiate.
Interment will be in Montrepose Cemetery, Kingston.
