SOUTH CAIRO---Charles L. Miller, 63, of Ira Vail Road,
South Cairo, died suddenly Friday evening, March 29, 2002 at home.
He was born July 1, 1938 in East Jewett, son of the late Harold and Mary
Mead Miller.
Mr. Miller served in the US Navy and was a veteran of the
Korean Conflict and Cuban Bay of Pigs Invasion.
He was an employee at Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill. He was a member
of the Cairo-Durham Elks Lodge and Stump Jumpers Rod and Gun Club.
Surviving Mr. Miller are his wife, Doris Wolven Miller of
South Cairo, three brothers, William Miller of Ravena, Richard Miller of
Saugerties, and Wayne Miller of Cairo; four sisters, Martha Thorne of
Huntsville, AL, Janet O'Brien of Catskill, Joan Graham of Catskill and Faith
Miller of Freehold; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Donald Miller.
Calling hours will be 5-9 pm Monday at the Traver &
McCurry Funeral Home. Elks services will be conducted at 7:30 pm.
Funeral services will be at 11 am Tuesday at the funeral home. The Rev.
David Tipple, Pastor, Kiskatom Dutch Reformed Church will be officiating.
Interment will be in the Veterans Plot at Catskill Rural Cemetery.

CATSKILL---Nicholaus Leon Spoor, 22, died suddenly on
Friday, March 29, 2002 at home, following a long illness.
He was born May 21, 1979 in Memphis, TN, son of Gerald F. Spoor of
Catskill and Sherry Oliver Geisler of Ancram.
Mr. Spoor was a graduate of Catskill High School, Class of
1998. He was an employee at Precision Flow Technologies of Lake
Katrine. He played drums and was a
member of the band "Spim".
In addition to his parents, Mr. Spoor is survived by his
step-mother, Judith Spoor of Catskill; two brothers, Isak F. Spoor and Andrew O.
Spoor, both of Jacksonville, FL; three sisters, Audrey A. Spoor of Ancram,
Stephanie C. Beck and Alexis M. Beck, both of Catskill.
Calling hours are 2-4 pm Monday at the Traver & McCurry
Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill. Private cremation will be
performed at Park View Cemetery in Schenectady.

CATSKILL---John F. DeLuca, Jr., 74, of Catskill, died Friday evening, March 29, 2002, at
Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson. Mr.
DeLuca was born Aug. 19, 1927 in Catskill, son of the late John Deuca and Mary
Cooke DeLuca.
He was employed at Jamesway in Catskill, prior to his
retirement. He was a communicant at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in
Catskill. Mr. DeLuca was a Fourth
Degree member of the Knight's of Columbus Council No. 1572, and was a member of
the Secular Franciscan Third Order at St. Anthony's Friary in Catskill.
Surviving are six children, Eunice Thein of Rochester,
Susan Moore of Stroughton, MA, David DeLuca of Coxsackie, Jill Peters of
Coxsackie, Joy Pruiksma of Coxsackie, Albert DeLuca of Greenville;
two brothers, Fred DeLuca of Albany and
Robert DeLuca of Greensboeo, NC; a sister, Phyllis DeLuca of Catskill; 14
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, William and Anthony DeLuca.
Calling hours will be 4-8 pm Tuesday at Traver &
McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 am Wednesday at the funeral home with
the Rev. Richard Jacobs, Associate Pastor of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church
officiating. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Catskill.

SPRING HILL, FL.---Andrea (Aurora) Cante, 98, of Spring
Hill, FL, formerly of Freehold, died Saturday, March 30, 2002.
Born November 30, 1903 in Cuba, she was the daughter of the late Alfredo
and Francisca (Vallejo) Cano. Mrs. Cante
and her late husband Louis Cante operated the Villa Lucia Resort in Freehold.
She moved to Florida in 1997.
Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 9 am Friday from
St. John the Baptist Church in Greenville.
Interment will follow in the Freehold Cemetery.
Local arrangements are under the direction of the Cunningham Funeral
Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville.

CATSKILL---Rose M. Dowd, 84, former longtime Greene County
resident, of North Myrtle Beach, SC, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at home.
A past resident of Five Mile Woods Road, Catskill, Mrs. Dowd moved to
North Myrtle Beach, SC, in 1984. She
was a nurse at Greene County Memorial Hospital in Catskill
for many years prior to her retirement.
Mrs. Dowd was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Dowd in
December 1988. Mrs. Dowd was an
active member of Our Lady Star of
the Sea Catholic Church in North Myrtle Beach.
She is survived by two sons, William R.
Dowd of Randolph Center, VT,
and Raymond R. Dowd, Jr. of Palm Bay, FL; a
daughter, Betty J. Maloney of Randolph, VT;
seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be held 2 pm Saturday,
April 6 at Catskill Rural Cemetery, Associate Pastor Richard Jacobs of St.
Patrick's Church of Catskill will officiate.

GREENVILLE--- Josefin M. Kudlack, 82, of Greenville, died
Saturday, March 30. 2002, at Albany Medical Center. Born Jan. 25, 1920 in Czechoslovakia, she was the daughter of
the late Andrew and Rolfe Strmencki Marek.
She was a self employed child care person and helped her
late husband John Kudlack operate the family farm.
She was a member of the St. John's Rosary Society.
Survivors include a daughter, Catherine Gamsjager of
Greenville; a son, Andrew Kudlack of Wisconsin; two step sons, John
(Jack) Kudlack of Rensselaerville and Richard Kudlack of Guilderland; two
grandchildren, Auston and Thomas Gamsjager; and three step grandchildren,
Rachel, Craig and John Kudlack III.
Calling hours will be 7-9 pm Wednesday at the Cunningham
Funeral Home, Route 81, Greenville. Services
will be 8:30 am Thursday at the funeral home, with Mass of Christian Burial 9 am

CATSKILL---Myron Jacob Levinson, 69, of Sawmill Road,
Catskill, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Columbia Memorial
Hospital in Hudson. He was
born November 25, 1932, in New York City, the son of the late
Isadore and Yetta Fischer Levinson.
Mr. Levinson served in the US Navy and was a veteran of the Korean
Conflict.
Mr. Levinson is survived by his wife, Ellen Levinson of
Catskill; two sons, Douglas Levinson Marek of Floral Park and Ian
Levinson of Port Washington; two
daughters, Valerie Levinson Byrne of Bayside, Queens and Jenna Levinson of Hudson; two
sisters, Millie Herman of Boca Raton, FL, and Sylvia Zichlin of Tampa, FL; two
grandchildren, Sean Levinson of Catskill and Quinasia Welch of Hudson.
Graveside funeral services will be held 12:30 pm Tuesday,
April 2, at the veterans plot of Catskill Rural Cemetery. Rabbi Daniel Fried
will officiate. Funeral

COXSACKIE---Walter M. Martin, 88, died Wednesday, April 3,
2002 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.
Mr. Martin was born in Bloomingdale, NY, son of the late
Walter J. & Lizzie Abbott Martin.
He was a self-employed truck driver for many years.
Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, Mildred Hannay Martin;
a daughter, Marion Miller; a brother, Fortis Martin; a grand daughter, Melina
Martin; three grandsons, Steven Martin, Dylan Martin and Caleb Martin; and many
nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by a brother, Wendell Martin.
Calling hours will start at 4 pm, Friday at the Applebee
Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. Services
will be at 7 pm at the funeral home.

FORT EDWARD---Margaret Varden, 85, formerly of Coxsackie, died Tuesday, April2, 2002 at Ford
Hudson Health Center, Inc. in the Town of
Fort Edward after a long illness. Born
May 24, 1906 in Coxsackie, she was the daughter of the late Michael F. and Julia
(Pendergast) Varden. She was born
and lived in Coxsackie for more than 70 years before moving to Colonie and
Mechanicville. She was admitted to
the New York State Bar in 1946 after serving a clerkship in the law offices
of Curtis, Warren and Fori in
Coxsackie, where she was employed for more than 20 years.
She was a member of the Greene County Bar Association.
She served as chief clerk of the Greene County Surrogate's Court for
about 25 years. Before retirement ,
she was secretary to Supreme Court Justice George L. Cobb of Catskill.
While living in Coxsackie, she was a trustee of St. Mary's
Roman Catholic Church and member of its Rosary Society and a member of the Board
of Trustees of Heermance Memorial Library.
Survivors include her cousins, Gertrude M. Cardany of
Plattsburgh, Patricia L. Burke and her husband Thomas A.
Burke; and many other
devoted cousins.
Calling hours will take place 9-10 am Thursday, April 18,
at the W.C. Brady's Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St. Coxsackie.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am Thursday, April 18,
St. Mary's Church, Coxsackie, with the Rev. John Monya as the celebrant.
Interment will follow in the family plot of the St. Mary's Cemetery in
Coxsackie.

partner, Mary Bregas.

TANNERSVILLE---Donald D. Griffin, 75m of Tannersville, died
Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at his residence.
He was born Aug. 19, 1926, son of the late Homer Griffin and Eva O'Dell
Griffin, in East Jewett.
Mr. Griffin retired after
20 years of service in the US Army, having served in WW 11 and Korea with
military honors. He was a member of the Bunt Brewer Post No. 165 and a lifetime
member of the VFW and the DAV.
Survivors include his companion of 22 years, Lawana J.
Gilman of Tannersville; a son, Steven Griffin of Martinez, GA; two brothers,
Orliff Griffin of Union, NJ; a sister, June Benson of Deerfield Beach, FL; and
many nieces and nephews and many friends.
He was predeceased by five sisters, Bessie Healy,
Helen Rohl, Ruth Braun, Beatrice Hinch, and Charlotte Meigs.
A cremation was held at
the Wiltwyck Rural Crematory in Kingston. Memorial
services will be at 2 pm Saturday at the Aston-Basagic Funeral Home, Main
Street, Hunter. Officiating will be the Rev. Gregory Ferriss.

COXSACKIE---Theresa Marie Tarallo Dardani, 81, died
Thursday, April 4, 2002, at her home after a long battle with cancer.
She was born in Gacta, Italy, on Oct. 17, 1920. She came to America
through Ellis Island with her family at the age of 4 and settled in Coxsackie.
Affectionately known as "Gee" by family and
friends, Mrs. Dardani was a homemaker and spent her life caring for her family,
grandchildren, great grandchildren, and others.
Her great love of children inspired her to spend 15 years as an assistant
at Animal Crackers Nursery School. She
was a graduate of Coxsackie-Athens High School.
A communicant of Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church, she was a member of
the Altar Rosary Society.
Surviving are her husband, Alfred; daughter, Anne
D'Arcangelis; son, David (Mary); son, Alfred (Jane); son, Stephen (Lorraine);
grandchildren, Lisa, Teresa, Valerie, Antonio, Ross, Aaron, Molly, Ian
and Celisia; great-grandchildrem, Lorenzo, Giovanna and Anna Maria, as well as
several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours are 2-6 pm Sunday at the W. C. Brady's Sons,

suddenly April 4, 2002. Mr. Lepis
was born July 11, 1926 son of the late Vincent Lepis and Anna DelGiudice Lepis.
He was a retired investment clerk, having worked for Merrill Lynch in New
York City. Mr. Lepis was a communicant
of St. John the Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mary (Edgar) Lepis; two sisters,
Patricia and Angela Lepis; and two cousins, Mary Mockler and Francis Mockler.

CAIRO---Caroline M. Barroncini, 92, of Cairo, died
Saturday, April 6, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson. She was also a resident of the Eden Park Nursing Home in
Catskill. Born Dec. 19, 1909, she
was the daughter of the late Bartolo and Elinora Giampietro Maggiore.
She has been an area resident since 1991. Mrs. Barroncini
was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, loved to knit, and was a dedicated
member of the Ulster County Senior Citizens
Club of Highland.
Survivors include a son, Donald J. Barroncini of Acra.
Mrs. Barroncini was predeceased by her husband, Donato in 1995
There will be no calling hours.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 am Tuesday at St.
Joseph's Novitiate Church, Route 31, Round Top.
The day of the funeral everyone is asked to meet at the church. Interment
will follow next to her husband in St. Joseph's Novitiate Cemetery.

HAROLD A. OVERBAUGH
Tugboat Captain
CATSKILL---Harold A. Overbaugh,
80, died peacefully at his Cauterskill Road home on Saturday, April 6, 2002
following a prolonged illness. Born
Sept. 8, 1921, he was the son of the late Harold S. Overbaugh and Madeline Naher
Overbaugh.
During World War 11, Mr. Overbaugh served
on the air-sea rescue boats and later piloted a tug boat on the Ganges
River in India. After the war he
obtained both a master's and
pilot's license in the US Merchant Marine and worked for many years as tug boat
captain for the marine division of the New York Central Railroad, and the
Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal. He
retired from Atlantic Cement Co. where he was a supervisor for their barge dock
operation.
Mr. Overbaugh was a lifetime member of the Sullivan-Teator
Post 770 Veteran's Foreign Wars and was an avid gardner and hunter.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Marion Keller
Overbaugh, three sons, Harold L. (Larry) Overbaugh, Michael Overbaugh and
William (Bill) Overbaugh, all of Catskill.; three daughters, Carol O'Neill of
Atlanta, GA; Susan Loughman of Mine Run, VA, and Marion Porto of Catskill.
He had 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Mr. Overbaugh was predeceased by three grandchildren: Eric Loughman,
Kevin Rose and Benjamin Overbaugh.
Calling hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 pm, Tuesday at the
Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.
The funeral service will be 11 am Wednesday at St. Bridget's Church in
Leeds followed by interment at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Catskill.

before retiring in 1997.

Hughes; grandchildren, Emily and A.J.; and two stepdaughters, Suzanne Cosgrove
and Debbie Cosgrove.

Nov. 4, 1929 in Queens, she was the daughter of the late James and Jeanette V.
McMullin Brady. She was an area
resident for 12 years and a resident of the Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill
for four years.
Survivors include a son, Kevin Kelly and a daughter, Jean
Bergen of Astoria, Queens; two brothers, James Brady of Saugerties; two
grandchildren, Heather Bergen and Edward Bergen of Queens; extended family
members, Debra and Richard Wilson and their children, Dana, Rachel, Sara and
Richard Jr., all of South Cairo.

Cartwright Groff.
Mrs. Remley was
predeceased by two husbands, Benjamin Remley in 1966 and Ernest Van Dyke in
1990; and two grandchildren, Mathieu Daman Johnson and Tiffany Velyn Johnson.
Mrs. Remley is survived by five children, Tamara Butterworth of Durham,
Ernest Van Dyke of Slingerlands, Patrice Schwarz of New Jersey, Benjamin J.
Remley, Jr. of Florida and Joseph B. Remley of Leeds;
five sisters, Virginia Houle of Catskill, Alice Carlander of Cairo,
Evelyn Helmedach of Catskill, Janet Groff of Cairo and Pauline Jaycox of
Catskill; a brother, Charles Groff

ATHENS---Josephine Frances Adamo, 94, of Athens, died
Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at Columbia-Greene Long Term Care in Catskill.
Born Jan. 3, 1908 in Cementon, she was the daughter of the late Anthony
and Frances Daley Colby. Mrs. Adamo
was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Athens. She was a member of the Rivertown Senior Citizens Center.
Survivors include a daughter, Frances Moon of Catskill; six
grandchildren, Arthur Moon of Catskill, Emma Weiss of Catskill, Albert Adamo of
Coxsackie, Joanne Conway of Coxsackie, Jamie Dolan of Coxsackie and Mary Ellen
Plante of Pennsylvania; and several
great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Mrs. Adamo was predeceased by her husband Albert Adamo in
December 1974 and a son James Adamo in 1964.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted 11 am Friday, April
12 at St. Mary's Cemetery in Coxsackie.

Rensselaerville---Ruth N. Bryan, 88, of Rensselaerville,
died Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at Eden Park Nursing Home in Albany.
Born Jan. 17, 1914 in Yampa, CO, she was the daughter of the late Arthur
E. and Nettie Pross Panting. She
was a lifelong homemaker, farmer and member of the Rensselaerville Historical
Society.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth (Barbara) Bryan,
Richard (Phyllis) Bryan, and Theodore Bryan, all of Rensselaerville; four
grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Bryan was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Bryan on
March 8, 2002; four sisters, Florence Decker, Emma Anderson, Myrtle Hun and
Mabel Kropp; and two brothers, Harry and James Panting.
Services will be 1 pm Friday from the Cunningham Funeral
Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville. Calling
hours will be 11 am to 1 pm prior to the services.
Interment of Kenneth Bryan and Ruth Bryan will follow the service in the
Rensselaerville Cemetery.

Feb. 28, 1927 in Mineola, she was the daughter of the late Albert N. and Eleanor
Sweeny Bacon. She was a homemaker,
devoting her life to her family. She
was a Communicant of St. John the Baptist Church in Greenville and a member of
the Greenville American Legion Post No. 291 Ladies Auxiliary.

Sunday, April 14, 2002 at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill.
Born Nov. 2, 1912, in Bronx, NY, the daughter of John and Mary Springler
Kohler. Mrs. Guth was the former
owner of the Holiday Hill Resort on Route 296
in Jewett. She operated the resort with her husband for many years.
She was a past member of the Eastern Star Chapter as well as the Windham
Chamber of Commerce. She enjoyed knitting for the aged.
Survivors include her brother-in-law, Vincent Lomoriello,
nephew, Vincent Lomoriello, and niece Mary Rattendi,
as well as nine grand nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Guth was predeceased by her husband William in 1981 and her sister,
Madeline Lomoriello
and a brother Alfred Kohler.

She was born Oct. 29, 1908, in Veroli, Italy, daughter of the late
Angelomario and Angela Ciufaloni Pagliaroli.
Formerly of Stony Point, Mrs. Fiorini had been a Catskill area resident
since 1999.
Surviving are a son, Aldo (Maria) Fiorini, of Catskill; two
daughters, Luciana Vozzolo of Pearl River and Sr. Maria Pia Fiorini of Lima,
Peru; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Fiorini was predeceased by her husband, Giuseppe
Firoini in 1991; and a daughter, Ida Bragaglia.

Formerly of Manhattan, Mrs. Carnival had been a Greene County resident since 1991.
Survivors include a son, James J. Carnival of Oak Hill; a daughter Florence Magliano of Massapequa; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Carnival was predeceased by her husband, James V. Carnival, on April 5, 1995.

Born Sept. 22, 1927 in Coxsackie, he was the son of the late Grant B. and Helen (Gallup) Lezatte.
Mr. Lezatte was a 50-year member of the D.M. Hamilton Steamer Fire Co. of Coxsackie.
He was a member of the Coxsackie United Methodist Church and a member of the Republican Party, and he also loved gardening.
Survivors include his wife, Lucy A. (Walker) Lezatte of Coxsackie; two sons, Dale Lezatte of Coxsackie and Gene Lezatte of Athens; two daughters, Debra Erickson of Guilderland and Cindy Blunck of Coxsackie; a brother, Kenneth Lezatte (Lou) of Glenmont; and six grandchildren, Brooke, Andrew, Crystal, Lindsay, Brianna and Alexa.

Mr. Riley had been an area resident for 22 years and he also was employed by the Conference of Mayors of Albany for the last 16 years. He loved fishing and hunting in his spare time.

Catskill – William E. McKeon, 76, of 8 Orchard Ave., Catskill, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at St. Peter’s Hospice in Albany. He was born Aug. 7, 1925, in the Bronx, the son of the late William and Mabel (Thomas) McKeon.
Mr. McKeon served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local No. 265 and the Greenville American Legion Post No. 291 Mr. McKeon was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn E. Keicher) McKeon, on July 6, 1993, and a brother, Donald R. McKeon.
Mr. McKeon is survived by three sons, William W. McLeon of Coxsackie, Robert H, McKeon of Cairo, and Timothy T. McKeon, of Catskill; and nine grandchildren, Donald McKeon, David McKeon, Debra McKeon, Tarah McKeon, Kailee McKeon, Kyle McKeon, Ricky Dedrick, Kimberly Dedrick and Kelly Dedrick.

Round Top – Paula Mueller, 99, formerly of Winterclove Road, Round Top, died Wednesday, April 17, at Greene Long Term Care, Catskill, after a long illness.
She was born Oct. 9, 1902 in Germany, she was the daughter of the late Max and Kathryn (Badewitz) Hillsburger.
Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Mueller owned and operated Crystal Brook Resort in Round Top from 1936 to 1960.
She was a member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church of Cairo, treasurer of the Ladies Assembly from 1963 to 1967, financial secretary from 1968 to 1972, she was a member of the counting committee Stewardship, an honorary member of the Ladies Assembly and Auxiliary member of the Round Top Ladies Auxiliary of the Round Top Volunteer Company.
Survivors include a niece, Linda Gilser of Tulsa, Okla., a nephew, Edgar Muller of Round Top and a dear friend, Carol Spohler and the late Fred Spohler.
Mrs. Mueller was predeceased by her husband Fritz in 1991.

Co-owned Crystal Brook Resort
Cairo – Paula Mueller, 99, formerly of Winter Clove Road, Round Top, peacefully entered into Eternal Rest at Long Term Care in Catskill on Wednesday evening, April 17, 2002. She was born in Germany on Oct. 9, 1902, and emigrated to the United States at a young age, where she worked as a children’s nurse and nanny. In 1926 she married the late Fritz Mueller and in later years they moved to Round Top, where they owned the Crystal Brook Resort. Mr. Mueller built the Mountain Casino, now owned by the Hassenkopf/Dukarm family and known as the Brauhaus.
Fritz and Paula Mueller were instrumental in the early beginnings of Resurrection Lutheran Church. They devoted their lives to their church and to helping the pastors and their families. They were devoted to Pastor Louis Laundhardt and his wife Louann in helping to care for their children as well as the pastors Kjoller, Gade and Peters. Having no children of their own, their hearts were filled with caring for others. Their home was always open to visits with friends and coffee klatches. In 1976 Paula and Fritz Mueller celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, renewing their 50th wedding vows at a reception held at Wolff’s Maple Breeze Resort.
Mrs. Mueller was the oldest living member of resurrection Lutheran Church in Cairo. She served as the nursery superintendent, treasurer of the Ladies Association, financial secretary, Stewardship Committee, honor member of the Ladies Assembly and member of the Auxiliary of the Round Top Fire Company.
Mrs. Mueller was devoted to her mother and Mr. Mueller and cared for them in their declining years. She maintained her home until her health failed and was aided by dear friends. She resided at the Pavilion and later at Long Term Care in Catskill.
Unable to attend church services, her pastor, Victor Nelsen, was a frequent visitor at Long Term Care, where he prayed with her and gave her the Sacrament of Communion.
Mrs. Mueller is survived by her nephew, Edgar Mueller and his wife Charlotte of Round Top; their son Richard, his wife Ruby and children Heidi and Sophia, daughter Christina, nephew Edmund and Sandy Mueller of Northport; her niece, Linda Geisler and son Timothy of Tulas, Okla.; and her very dear and devoted friends Bea Zeeb, Clara and George Stapchuck, Ray and Elsie Miller and a family, and Carol Spohler. Mrs. Spohler’s late husband Fred Spohler was Mrs. Mueller’s caretaker for many years.
Calling hours at Richards Funeral Home on Bross Street in Cairo will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Monday, April 22, and a celebration of Mrs. Mueller’s life will be held at Resurrection Lutheran Church at 2:30 p.m. with pastor Duckow officiating in the absence of Pastor Nelsen. Interment will follow at Round Top Cemetery in the family plot.

Round Top – Helmut Herzog, 89, of Maple Lawn Road, Round Top, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Stratton Veterans Administration Hospital in Albany.
Born April 28, 1912 in Germany, he was the son of the late William and Johanne Herzog.
During the World War II, Mr. Herzog served with the U.S. Navy. Prior to retirement he owned and operated B&D Hardware Co. in Flushing, N.Y.
He has been a area resident for the past 30 years. He was a member of the Catskill Elks Lodge 1341 and the Cairo Senior Citizens.
Mr. Herzog is survived by his wife of 64 years Elsie (Koehler) Herzog of Round Top.
Calling hours will be conducted 6 to 8 p.m., two hours before funeral services, Wednesday, at the Richards Funeral Home, 383 Bross St., Cairo.

Born Sept. 4, 1910 in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of Arthur and Amelia (Kreuter) Schuchmann.
Mrs. Paladino has been a resident of Greene County for over 29 years.
She was a member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church of Cairo and the Ladies Guild.

Orlando, Fla – Gladys Birdella Weeks, 87, former resident of Coxsackie, Athens, Albany, and Phillips, Maine, died March 12, 2002, at the Orlando, Fla., home of her daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Tom Urbas, after a stroke.
Born May 21, 1914 in Medway, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Birdella Traver Robinson and the widow of Otto C. Weeks who died Jan. 2, 2001 a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors in addition to her daughter and son-in-law are her grandson, Scott Gould of Colo.; sister-in-law, Kathleen Williams in Greenville; and several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Mrs. Weeks was predeceased by three sisters, Vivian Smith, Martha Hallenbeck, and Pearl Mulbury as well as brother, Theodore Robertson.
A dual committal service is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Weeks family plot at the Town of Catskill cemetery, with Chaplain (Major) Lee Hardgrove, Division Chaplain, 42nd Infantry, N.Y. National Guard, officiating.

Catskill – Arthur L. Brantley, 70, of Summit Avenue, Catskill, died Saturday evening April 20, 2002, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.
He was born Aug. 4, 1931, in Sharon, Ga., son of the late Artis Brantley and Lizzie (Graham) Brantley.
Mr. Brantley was an employee of American Valve Company in Coxsackie, prior to his retirement. Later he worked for Wormuth Brothers Foundry in Athens,

He was predeceased by his wife Shirley Elizabeth Brantley on Oct. 3, 1993, a brother, Leonard Gresham, and a son, Leslie Brantley.

Preston Hollow – Paul H. Buscher, 57, formerly of Cornwallville, died suddenly at his home in Homestead, Fla.
Born June 1, 1944, in New York City, he was the son of the late Hulmuth and Dorothy Buscher.
Mr. Buscher served in the U.S. Navy and was a millwright working in various locations.
Survivors include a son, Tom Buscher of Greenville; two daughters, Amy Acker of Purling and Lindsey Buscher of Missouri; four grandchildren; and a brother Robert Buscher of Summerfield, Fla.

ALFRED HIRSCH
Diesel engineer
Greenville – Alfred Hirsch, 89, of Bates Hollow, died Sunday, April 21, 2002 of mesothelioma.
Born April 9, 1913 in Brooklyn, he was the son of Anson and Martha Hirsch.
Mr. Hirsch worked in his father’s bakery until his interest in the emerging field of diesel engineering led him to study in California. During World War II, he was a marine engineer and inspector of operation and maintenance for the Army Transport Service at the Brooklyn Army Base.
After the war, Mr. Hirsch worked for 50 years as chief engineer on various tugboats and ship lines including Tracy Towing, Red Star and Hess lines.
Starting in 1950, Mr. Hirsch’s drive and creativity allowed him to build his home, Twin Ponds, in Bates Hollow. This farm complex was a labor of love that occupied him constantly up (to) the last weeks of his life.
He was introduced to this area by his uncle, Al Leatherman, who moved there from New York City in 1940.
Mr. Hinsch’s inexhaustible energy, generosity and wit immediately earned him the admiration and friendship of all those who met him.
Survivors include his wife of 20 years Elizabeth Kostro Hirsch; a son, Alfred Jr. of New Haven, Conn.; a brother, Sigmund, and niece, Linda of New York City; as well as a niece, Nancy, and nephew, Jack, of New Jersey; as well as many cousins and friends.
Mr. Hirsch was predeceased by his first wife, Emma Cazazza Hirsch, and brothers, Charles and Lucien.

Born Oct. 9, 1915, in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of Natalie and Giuseppe Bove Simone.
From 1984 to 1994, Mrs. Manetta worked in housekeeping at Ferncliffe Nursing Home in Rhinebeck.
She was a parishioner of both St. Sylvia’s Church in Tivoli and St. John the Baptist Church in Greenville.
On Jan. 17, 1937, at St. Boniface Church in Elmont, she married Robert Manetta. Mr. Manetta died Sept 3, 2001.
Survivors include a daughter, Josephine McNeil of Tivoli; and a son, Gaetano “Tom” Manetta of Tivoli; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Manetta was predeceased by a sister, Flora, and three brothers, Frank, James and Joseph Simone.

Freehold – Doris M. Hempstead, 79 of Freehold, died suddenly Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at her home.
Born Oct. 30, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Anna (Powers) Blakeslee.
Mrs. Hempstead enjoyed bowling and fishing and a good game of pinochle on occasion.
She was well known as one of the area’s finest genealogist, having traced back many area families histories, some as far back as the Mayflower.
Mrs. Hempstead was a member pf the Freehold Vol. Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, the Freehold Village Improvement Association, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Greene County Historical Society and the Greenville Area Historical Society.
Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Pugsley and her husband Patrick (Rick) of Cairo, Rhonda Julig and her husband James of East Durham and Gloria Duncan and her husband Ronnie of Medusa; a son Richard Hempstead and his fiancée Jill Huffman of Freehold; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Teller of Greenville, and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hempstead was predeceased by her husband Everett Hempstead in 1998, a granddaughter Kimberly Ann Goff in 1972, a sister, Betty Whitbeck, and a brother, Bruce Blakeslee, Sr.
Calling hours will be 6 to 9 p.m. Friday from the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday from the funeral home.
Interment will be in the Freehold Cemetery.

Round Top – George John Paul Kleinmeier IV, 15 died Sunday April 7, 2002.
George was born in Dallas, Feb. 22, 1987. He battled leukemia for several months with grace and dignity.
He lived for a while in Round Top and attended the Cairo-Durham Middle School for the year 1999. He loved his church and baseball, and is remembered as being bright and fun-loving. His love of baseball attracted him to the Cairo Little League, where Coach Wally Shelly gave him the game ball for three different games.
Surviving are his father, George Paul Kleinmeier III, stepmother, Gloria Kleinmeier; sisters, Amanda, Gloria, and Holly of Round Top; brothers, Timothy and Matthew; grandparents, George and Nancy Kleinmeier of Round Top; uncles, Jim and Daniel Kleinmeier of Round Top; and an aunt, Kathleen, and her husband, Dan Mottle of Round Top.

Palenville – Lynn M. McGlynn, a longtime resident of the Palenville area, died Monday, April 22, 2002, at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston.
She was born June 1, 1953 in Brooklyn, daughter of Dorothy M. (Shanley) Hedges of Palenville and the late John J. Stanley Sr.
Mrs. McGlynn was a registered nurse at Columbia-Greene Long Term Care in Catskill, prior to her illness. She was predeceased by a brother John J. Stanley Jr.
Surviving are her husband, Brian McGlynn of Palenville, three daughters, Holly A. and Billy Hoyt of Hensonville, and Megan M. McGlynn and Ashley J. McGlynn of Palenville, a son, Brian V. McGlynn of Palenville; five brothers, Bruce D. and Gina Shanley, Dennis M. Shanley, Daniel M. Shanley, Thomas and Cindy Shanley and Raymond and Michele Shanley, all of Palenville, a sister-in-law, Elysee Shanley of Palenville, a grandson, Dylan Hoyt of Hensonville and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

ELISHA VAN DEUSEN III
Professor of biology
Viejo, Calif. – Elisha Blackmar Van Deusen III, 58, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, while vacationing in Switzerland.
He was born Aug. 5, 1943 in Catskill, where he lived until attending Houghton College in western New York state. There he studied biology as well as Greek and philosophy.
While there, he met and married Nancy Mostert of Wheaton, Ill, a piano performance player. He received his PhD in Biology under the eminent embriologist, Robert Briggs, in December 1972, at Indiana University.
The following year he accepted a fellowship to work with Dr. Walter Gehring in the newly founded biocenter at the University of Basel, Switzerland. He and his wife, Nancy, remained in Basel for 12, years, raising their son “Ely”, and becoming a part of the Swiss-German culture.
The family moved to southern California in 1983 where he did research at UCLA. In 1986, he accepted a position at Biola University in the biology department.
Over the years, he became known as “Dr. Van” to his students. He was a beloved professor, a skilled writer, an avid photographer and a weekend gardener.
He had done extensive traveling to such places as Australia, Egypt, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Hawaii as well as many countries in Europe.
His death was the result of an unexpected heart attack while he was sleeping.
Survivors include his wife Nancy Van Deusen and a son, Elisha B. Van Deusen IV, both of Viejo, Calif., his mother, Janet O. Van Heest of Titusville, Fla., his sisters, Ann Garwood of Glastonbury, Conn., and Leslie Philipot of Titusville, Fla., as well as many in-laws and cousins.
His burial took place in Switzerland outside the City of Basel.
Memorial services were held at Biola University.

MARIE QUIGLEY BURKE

Coxsackie – Marie Quigley Burke, 88 died Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at Columbia Memorial Hospital, in Hudson after a brief illness.
Born Oct. 9, 1913, in Coxsackie, she was the daughter of the late Edna Armstrong and Percey F. Quigley.
Mrs. Burke was a graduate of the Albany Business College and was a retired secretary of the New York State Department of Correctional Services. Prior to that she had been a manager of the Quigley Insurance Agency.
She had also been active in the management of the Coxsackie Theater and in the 1938 had been appointed as the first female collector of taxes by the Internal Revenue Service in Albany.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Church, the St. Mary’s Rosary Society, and was an active member of the Coxsackie Senior Citizens.
Survivors include a daughter, Joan (Mrs. Matthew Kenick) and a son, Thomas J. Burke, both of Coxsackie; five grandchildren, including Burke D. Wallace of Braintree, Mass., Scott M. Wallace of North Augustus, S.C., Shawn Wallace of Melbourne, Fla., Michelle Burke of Ardsley and James J. Burke of Newport Beach, Calif.; and three great-grandchildren, Aaron, Lindsey and Lauren of North Augustus, S.C.
Mrs. Burke was predeceased by her husband, Joseph B. Burke, and a brother, Donald F. Quigley.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 a.m. Thursday, April 25, from the W.C. Brady’s Sons Funeral Home, 97 Mansion St., Coxsackie.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Church in Coxsackie.

Round Top – Charlotte Bouju, 79, previously of Round Top, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill where she had been a resident.
Born Nov. 26, 1922 in Germany, she was the daughter of the late William and Fredia Krueger.
Survivors include a son, Frank Bouju of Leeds; a daughter, Michelle Bouju of Westbury; a granddaughter, Kim Chalnik of Oakhurst, N.J.; a grandson, Christopher Bouju of Gardiner, a granddaughter, Micheline Kimmel of Waltham, Mass.; a great-grandson, Max Chalnik; a great-granddaughter, Rachel Chalnik; and a great-granddaughter, Abigail Kimmel.
Mrs. Bouju was predeceased by her husband, Roger Bouju, in 1988.
Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Millsapugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Earlton – Allan Spence, 88, of Earlton, died Thursday, April 25, 2002 at Newton Memorial Hospital in Newton, N.J.
Born in Canada, Mr. Spence grew up in Kearny, N.J. and lived in Secaucus, N.J., before moving to Earlton in 1957.
He was a carpenter and retired at the age of 62.
Mr. Spence was a member of the Earlton Volunteer Fire Company.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Winifred Beckmeyer Spence; three sons, Allan Spence of East Stroudsburg, Pa., Kevin Spence of New City and Michael Spence of Andover Townshop, N.J.; three daughters, Janet Vallese of Palisades Park, N.J., Donna Conklin of Andover, N.J., and Lori O’Brien of Clinton; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Freehold – Frank VanderPyle, 81, of Freehold, died suddenly April 24, 2002 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.
He was born in Patterson, N.J., on Nov. 25, 1920, son of the late Jacob VanderPyle and Laura (Bruen) VanderPyle.
Mr. VanderPyle served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was one of the “90-Day Wonders” of the 391st Bomb Squad, 34th Bomb Group. Upon his discharge from the service he moved to the Catskill Mountains, where he was a carpenter and home builder. He was also a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service at the Freehold Post Office. He retired in 1987 and pursued his life-long dream of writing and publishing books of true stories. Several of his true novels and stories are on the market today. Mr. VanderPyle was also an avid golfer and a former manager and coach of local Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams.
Surviving are his wife, Alice (Alnor) VanderPyle; a son, Frank (Bud) VanderPyle of Freeport; a daughter, Carrie Taranova of Lakeland, Fla.; three grandsons, Todd, Jeffery and Seth Taranova; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Ella Rysavy of Freehold; and a brother, Charles VanderPyle of New Jersey.

Catskill – James J. Connors, 81, of Boulder City, Ne., and formerly of Catskill, died Wednesday April 3, 2002 at his home after suffering a heart attack.
Born Jan. 26, 1921, in Brocton, Mass., Mr. Connors was the son of the late James H. Connors and Sarah (Condon) Connors.
During World War II he served as Aviation machinist Mate First Class aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Boxer. He retired in 1971, after 30 years, from the Marquette Cement Company. He then owned and operated the Catskill Trailer Sales & Rentals on Route 385 until he moved west in 1977 for the past 25 years he has resided in Boulder City, Ne.
Mr. Connors met Edith Schermerhorn during their teen-age years; they were married in 1943. They had eight children, including daughters Judy Lee Dolan of Athens, JoAnne Tanzini of Midland, Mich., Sandra Wallace of Coxsackie, Patricia Langevin of Huntersville, N.C., and Natasha McCombs of Littleton, Colo., sons Richard of Plymouth, Mich., Gary of Catskill and Jeffrey of Mesa, Az. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one sister, Mary Davenport of Casa Grande, Az.
Three sisters, Marguerite Onderdonk of Anaheim, Calif., Louise Reischer of Ontario, Calif. And an infant sister Delores, predeceased him.
Cremation took place at the Palm Mortuary in Henderson, Ne. A memorial mass will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart Association.

Hudson – James Webster, 42 of Hudson, died Friday, April 26, 2002, in Saugerties.
Born Dec. 13, 1959 in Catskill, he was the son of Eileen Haggerty Webster and the late Raymond Webster.
Mr. Webster had six years of college and served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was a truck driver for CRA Trucking Co., Landing, N.J.
Mr. Webster belonged to the Cairo chapter of the American Legion, the Hudson Moose Lodge and Federation of Polish Sportsmen. He was a former member and past president of Round Top Raiders Snowmobile Club.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife Pauline Webster of Hudson; two daughters, Toni Lynne Iaccino of Rhinebeck and Eva Marie Perry and her husband Andre Perry of Hudson; one grandson, Alonzo Perry of Hudson; one brother, Raymond Webster III of Kinderhook one sister, Kathleen Bahl of Kingston; as well as nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Calling hours will be 1 to 4 p.m. Monday at Bates & Anderson Funeral Home, 110 Green St. Hudson.
Services will be conducted 4 p.m. Monday from the funeral home with Chuck Polacco of the American Legion officiating.

Catskill – Alfred K. Walde, 96, of Catskill, died Friday, April 26, 2002 in the Columbia-Greene Hospice Unit at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.
Born Aug. 22, 1905 in Chemitz, Germany, he came to America in 1923.
Mr. Walde was a very active with the RSVP program of the Greene County Department of the Aging for many years. He delivered meals, took people to doctors appointments and the Senior Service Center in Catskill, as well as volunteering at the center, calling bingo, cleaning up and handling various other tasks.
He was a member of the Improved Order of Redmen for 438 years, a member of the Masons and a member of the New York State Watchmaker’s Association.
Survivors include three children, John Walde of Catskill Alfred Walde of Charleston, Maine and Martha Ott of Cobleskill; four granddaughters, and seven great-grandchildren.
Mr. Walde was predeceased by his long time companion, Edythe Stockinger.
In death, as in life, Mr. Walde was always thinking of others. He donated his body to Albany Medical College for medical research.
A memorial service will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Senior Center located in the American Legion Hall on Greene Street, Catskill.

Cairo – Louis (Fritz) K. Schepp, 72, of Cairo, died Saturday, April 27, 2002 after a long illness.
Mr. Schepp served in the United States Army from 1949-1951. He retired from the New York State Department of Transportation in 1985, after 28 years of service.
Survivors include his wife Anna M. (Beaune) Schepp; six children, Carol Hausmann of Feura Bush, Louis Schepp Jr. of Round Top; Edward Schepp of Greenville; Linda Feit of Freehold; Robert Schepp of Cairo; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Born Aug. 16, 1942 in Ancram, he was the son of the late Clayton and Edity (Wilbur) Brizzie.
Mr. Brizzie was an auto mechanic at Stan’s Auto Body.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Brizzie, five sons, George Brizzie, George Brizzie, George Brizzie, David Brizzie, and Michael Brizzie, two daughters, Cheryl Counes and Sarah Brizzie, seven grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
