Katherine F. Granich      Former Catskill resident

Albany—Katherine F. Granich of Albany died Sunday, June 1, 2003.

Born in Catskill, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Eva Pilatich Granich.

She was a graduate of Albany Business College and Catskill High School. She retired as secretary from the New York State Insurance Department.

She was the sister of Jane Granich of Albany, Joseph Granich of Catskill, Nicholas Granich of Catskill, May Pasquini of Albany, Mildred Grobe of Albany and the late Lucille Granich, Ann Collins, Stephen, John and Matthew Granich; many nieces and nephews and cousins also survive.

Calling hours are 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen St., Albany.

Funeral services are Thursday, 8:15 a.m. from the funeral home, thence to St. James Church, Albany at 9 a.m. where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.

Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Catskill.

Philip Arnold Heath              WWII veteran

Albany—Philip Arnold Heath, 79, of Greenport, died Friday, May 30, 2003, at the DVA Veterans Hospital in Albany.

Born Dec. 20, 1923 in Coxsackie, he was the son of the late Williard Myron Heath and the late Edith Foster Heath.

Mr. Heath served in the U. S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No., 1184 of Hudson.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian AuClaire Heath; four sons, Wendel Heath of Stuyvesant, Larry Heath of Hudson, Randy Heath of Sharon, Conn., Nickie Heath of Ancramdale; two daughters, Sharon Smith of Cannan, Conn., and Karen Wheeler of Chatham; and a brother, Gerald Heath of Rensselaerville.

Funeral services are private and under the directions of Cremation Funeral Service, 741 Delaware Ave., Delmar.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society of the Capital District, 1450 Western Ave. Albany, N. Y. 12203.

Maria C. Kane    Loving mother

Cairo—Mary (Maria) C. Kane, 81, of Potter Mountain Road, died suddenly on June 2, 2003 at Columbia Memorial Hospital Emergency Room in Hudson.

She was born in Brooklyn on March 6, 1922, and was the daughter of the late Gregario and Ramonda Guccione.

She had been a resident of Gilboa for 42 years and also a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church of Grand Gorge.

She loved to crochet, play bingo and was also a loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband Michael of Gilboa; sons Michael and daughter-in-law Teri of Cornwallville, Robert of Coxsackie; daughters, Mrs. Curtis (Linda) Naki of Hawaii, Mrs. Nathan (Debra) Thomas of Peru, N. Y., Mrs. Roy (Patricia) Handel of Cornwallville; sisters Angie Costa and Minnie Guccione, both of Central Islip, L. I.  She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place on Thursday, June 5, 2003 at the Richards Funeral Home, 383 Bross St. in Cairo at 5 p.m. with the Rev. John Murphy, pastor of St. Patrick’s Church of Catskill, officiating.

Private cremation services will take place on Friday at the Albany Rural Crematory in Menands.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at the funeral home on Thursday, June 5, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Levi Horn               U. S. Army veteran

Fountain, Colo.—Levi (Lee) John Horn Sr. left this earth on May 29, 2003 to join God and his son after an 8-year battle with multiple myloma due to agent orange exposure, with his wife of 38 years, Emma (Geerts) at his side in the family home. He went peacefully in his sleep.

Levi was born in Coxsackie on May 23, 1942. He was a son of the late George N. Horn and Clara Belle Lesson.  He was the loving father of Leanore (Steve) Varner, Levi (Snoopie) Horn Jr. and Lorranine (Bodee) Beyl, and Anton (Andy) Horn, who preceded his in death; he was grandfather to Misty Surber-Varner, Roman, Kendra and Payton Beyl, also the brother of George Horn Sr., and Shirley Gay and Jerry Horn, who also preceded him in death. He also had many nieces and nephews.

Levi served in the U. S. Army for 21 years as a generator mechanic and then and IG inspector. He received the Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal. Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/3 Bronze Service Stars; Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Good Conduct Medal w/6th  Award, Mechanic’s Badge w/Bar, Meritorious Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon (3).

He spent many years working with senior citizens and helping out with the local elementary school.  He formerly was employed by Contell/GTE.

Funeral services with full military honors was held on June 4 under direction of  the Dove-Witt Mortuary, South Hwy 85-87, Fountain, Colo.

Rose Roitero             Seamstress 

Durham—Rose Roitero, 90, formerly of West Harrison, died on June 3, 2003 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson. 

She was born on Oct. 18, 1912 to Simone and Elvira (Zambernardi) Consigli in Indiana, Pa. 

A full-time resident of East Durham since 1976, Rose worked as a seamstress and was known for her beautiful flower gardens and her wonderful needlepoint. She was a communicant of St. Theresa’s R. C. Church and a member of the WAJPL Golden Agers.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Arthur Edward Roitero, who she married on July 11, 1945; children Emma Homenick and Arthur Anthony Roitero; granddaughter Anna Maria Passero, and sister Theresa DelSanti of Italy. She was predeceased by her sister Louisa Raffellini.

Calling hours will be on Friday, June 6, 2003 at the Decker Funeral Home in Windham from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 7 at St. Theresa’s R. C. Church in Windham at 10 a.m.  Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Ashland.

In lieu of flowers, contribution s may be made in Rose’s memory to the St. Theresa’s Knights of Columbus Council No. 8533, Windham, N. Y. 12496.

Walter Dreger          Graveside service

Round Top—Graveside funeral service will take place for Walter S. Dreger, who died on Jan. 19, 2003 at the Stratton V.A. Hospital in Albany, on Saturday June 7, 2003 at 1 p.m. at the Round Top Cemetery, Round Top.

The Rev. J. Nunan, pastor of the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo, will officiate the grave side service.  The day of the service, everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are by the Richards Funeral Home in Cairo.

Stanley C. Galinski            World War II veteran

Climax—Stanley C. Galinski, 86, died on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

Stanley was born Nov. 2, 1916 in Yonkers and had been a resident of Climax since 1970.

Mr. Galinski served our nation in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a staff sergeant serving with headquarters company of the 2 ND Battalion in the 337 Th. Infantry. During his service he received the bronze and silver star.  He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received during the Eastern Mediterranean Campaign. He was stationed in Rome Arno, North Apennines and the Po Valley. He received the Conspicuous Service Award from the State of New York signed by Gov. Mario Cuomo.

He had been a postal mail handler at the Main Post Office in White Plains for many years. He was a member of the New York State Sheriff’s Association, the National Rifle Association and the AARP.

His survived by his beloved friend Rhoda Dolacky of Climax; her children Michael of Earlton, Dianne Hoffman of Earlton and Debra Hans of Climax; her grandchildren Erin Dolacky, Ashley Hoffman and David Hans Jr.  He was predeceased by his sister Julie Hynes and brothers Walter, Benjamin and Edward Galinski.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Edmond Hannon        Maintenance mechanic

Cairo—Edmond Hannon, 78, of Evergreen Drive, died on June 4, 2003 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

He was born in Ireland on Dec. 27, 1924.

Edmond had been an area resident for 12 years, a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church in Cairo. He was an avid fisherman and prior to his retirement, Edmond was a maintenance mechanic for Local 32 B of New York.

He is survived by his wife Margaret (Walch) Hannon of Cairo; sons Patrick of Cairo, David, Edward, James and Daniel Hannon all of New York City; siblings Sonnie Hannon and Elizabeth Stack of Ireland; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son Thomas.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday morning, June 7, 2003 at the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo, with the Rev. J. Nunan, pastor, as the celebrant.  Interment will follow in the family plot of the Greenville Cemetery.

John W. Jennings    Distinguished WWII Veteran

Greenville—John W. Jennings, 89, of South Cairo, formerly of Greenville, South Westerlo and Barefoot Bay, Fla., died peacefully at his home Thursday, June 5, 2003. 

Born in Nedusa, Feb. 26, 1914, he was the son of the late Aaron and Jean (Farquhar) Jennings. 

Mr. Jennings served his country during World War II in the U. S. Army 439th Bomb Squadron serving in the Rome-Arno, the North Appennines, the Southern France and the Balkan Campaigns. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with 4 Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge wit 1 Bronze cluster an d2 Overseas Service Bars. He was also awarded the Croix de Guerre by the President of France.  He had also passed the Glider Training Course.  He was discharged in 1845 as a corporal. He was a farmer and in charge of maintenance at Shepard’s Farm in Greenville until his retirement. After moving to Florida he worked at John’s Island Golf Course in Vero Beach. He was also a former member of the Greenville Volunteer Fire Co., the Westerlo Volunteer Fire Co. and the Greenville American Legion Post NO. 291. He will be remembered as a long-time avid Atlanta Braves fan.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 58 years, Roberta (Roe) Jennings; two sons, Richard McAney of Jefferson Heights, John (Jody) Jennings of Citrus, Calif., two daughters, Sandra Gottehrer of Clifton Park, and Susan Jennings of East Northport; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Webster Jennings of East Durham, Walton Jennings of Greenville, Russell Jennings of Greenville, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Thomas Jennings, a granddaughter, Robbin Gottehrer Graf and two sisters, Wilhelmina “Billie” Yoemans and Dorothea Mahoney.

Calling hours are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville.

Funeral services will be Sunday 2 p.m. at the funeral home. 

Interment will be in the Greenville Cemetery. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Columbia-Greene Community Hospice.

Coxsackie—Graveside funeral services will take place for Rose B. Kromer, who died on Feb. 21, 2003 in Lancaster, N. Y., on Saturday, June 7, 2003 at 9 a.m. at  St. Mary’s Cemetery in Coxsackie.

The Rev. J. Moyna, pastor of St. Mary’s Church of Coxsackie will officiate the graveside service.  The day of the service, everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery.

Margaret E. Tourjee             Bookkeeper 

Catskill—Margaret E. Tourjee, 85, died on Wednesday, June 4, 2003 in Hudson after a brief illness.

Born in Union City, N. J., she was the daughter of William and Margaret Korteland.

A 1935 graduate of Leonia High School, she was employed as a secretary and bookkeeper in New York City for 10 years. After marrying Everett H. Tourjee in November 1945, the couple returned to Catskill area.

Margaret was later employed at Lerners, Tanners National Bank and the Catskill Savings Bank from which she retired in 1976. Many happy winters were spent with her husband in Ft. Myers Beach, Fla.  A member of the High Hill Methodist Church and an active member of the Rivertown Crafters, she enjoyed reading, fishing, bowling, gardening, needlework and writing throughout her life.

Margaret was predeceased by her husband Everett; sisters Elizabeth Lewis and Marilyn Walsh; and brother William Korteland.

She is by her children, Marilyn Rositzke and husband William of Catskill, Kathleen Russell and husband Mark, of Climax, Ruth Tourjee and husband James Rafferty of Germantown and William Tourjee and wife Shelda Unite of Lakeville, Conn.; grandchildren William E. Rositzke, Michael Rositzke and William Rositzke; brother-in-law Theodore Tourjee of Athens; as well as one niece and several nephews.

 At the request of her family, there will be no services held. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Tebbutt Funeral Home in Albany.  Any memorial donations may be made to The Community Hospice of Columbia-Greene, 47 Liberty St., Catskill, N. Jim White        CNC machinist

Athens—Jim White, 51, died on Wednesday, June 4 at Columbia Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

Mr. White was born in Catskill on Jan. 18, 1952 to Anna Graff White and the late William Henry White Sr.

He attended Catskill High School and worked for Ametek-Rotron in Saugerties as a CNC machinist prior to his illness.  He was a Civil War enthusiast who also wrote poetry and composed songs to play on his guitar.

Mr. White is survived by his mother Anna A. White of Catskill; wife Patricia of Athens; sons Rory, Robert, Sean and Cody White, all of Virginia; stepson Dylan Bagley of Coxsackie; step-grandson Devyn Bagley of Coxsackie; siblings David of Catskill and Bonnie of Florida, as well as several nieces an nephews.

He was predeceased by his father William Henry White Sr., sister Betty White of Florida and brother Bob White of Cairo.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jun 7, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill. The Rev. Russell Sargent of the United Methodist Church in Catskill will officiate. Interment will be conducted in the Town of Catskill Cemetery.

Friends and relative are invited to call at the funeral home on Friday, Jun 6 form 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Madeline Amoroso               Gardener who loved sewing 

Purling—Madeline Amoroso, 80, died on June 6, 2003 at Northeast Center for Special Care in Lake Katrine, NY.

She was born on Oct. 22, 1922 in Brooklyn, the daughter of the late Donato and Angeline (Forgione) Gregorio.

During her lifetime, Madeline was a Purling, NY resident from 1960 to 2000. She was a communicant of the Sacred Hear Church in Cairo.  She loved gardening and sewing.

She is survived by her children, John Amoroso, Sr. of Purling, Daniel of Hudson, Debra Petrianni of Catskill and Angela of Northport, New York; siblings, John Gregorio, Yolanda McGee and Maryann Merindo, all of Florida; grandchildren Theresa Brantley and John Amoroso, Jr., both of Cairo, Regina Misitich of Catskill, Frank Amoroso II of Purling, Salvatore Petrianni III and Amber Petrianni, both of Catskill, Alyssa Amoroso of Hudson, Madeline DeLorenzo of Northport, NY; five great grandchildren; and many other cousins, nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband Frank, she was predeceased by daughter Theresa Amoroso, brothers Andre and Harry Gregorio, and sister Rose Rollins.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at the Richards Funeral Home, Bross Street in Cairo, on Monday, June 9 and on Tuesday, June 10 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on both days.

Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo, with the Rev. Fr. J. Nunan, Pastor, as celebrant.

Interment will follow in the family plot next to her late husband in the Round Top Cemetery.

Elizabeth Kotasek       Former Coxsackie resident

Coxsackie—Elizabeth Kotasek, 97, a former resident of Coxsackie, died at Eden Park Nursing Home in East Greenbush on Thursday, June 5, 2003.

She was born June 29, 1905 in Czechoslovakia.

Mrs. Kotasek worked as a shoe producer for Endicott Johnson in Johnson City, NY, prior to moving to Coxsackie where she ran a family farm from 1933 to the mid 1970s.

Survivors include her son Henry Tomecek of Yuma, AZ; two grandchildren, Lorraine Lupe of Selkirk, Richard Tomecek of Lewisville, TX; and great grandchildren Michael Ware of Colonie, and Aimee Ware of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Calling hours are 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday at the Sopris Funeral Home Inc. 11877 Route 9W, Coxsackie. Services and interment will be private.

Anthony A. Moretti           Special Education Teacher

Georgia—Services for Anthony A. Moretti, 48, formerly of North Bergen, were in Georgia last Sunday and in Toms River on Wednesday.  He died May 21 in Atlanta, Ga.

Mr. Moretti lived in North Bergen, Montclair, Sebastian, Fla., and Tarpon Springs, Fla.; before moving to Duluth, Ga.

A special education teacher, Moretti worked at the Oakland Center, Lawrenceville, Ga.   Previously, he taught at the Linwood Children’s Center, the A. Harry Moore Laboratory School, the North Hudson Academy, and the New Jersey Commission for the Blind.

Moretti received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Jersey City State College, and in 1992 earned certification in special education. He graduated from North Bergen High School where he played football.

An energetic supporter of children with special needs, he was a member of the Council for Exceptional Children, a volunteer for United Cerebral palsy, and a member of the leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Maryland. He was president of the Board of Trustees of New Durham Baptist Church, North Bergen. Last year he helped create a half0marathon for autistic children in Baltimore, Md. He inspired the children by running six marathons in one year.

Survivors include his wife, Sonya; two daughters, Dana and Jessica; his parents, Philip and Angela Moretti; two brothers, Nicholas and Philip of Catskill; two grandchildren, Garret Coe and LeeAnn DeJesus; and many other relatives.

Funeral arrangements were conducted by the Jim Stewart Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Ga.

Stanley M. Busti              U. S. Army veteran

Athens—Stanley M. Busti, 55, died on Thursday June 5, 2003 at Albany Medical Center.

He was born on Aug. 22, 1947, the son of the late Rhody and Olga (Wanchew) Busti.

Mr. Busti was a U. S. Army veteran who served during the 1960s. He was Shop Steward on the Union Board of Union Local 32B-32J in New York City. He was most recently employed at Dynabil Industries, Inc. in Coxsackie.

Stanley is survived by his beloved wife Danielle Busti, whom he married in 1972 in New York City.

He is also survived by his children, Vanessa of Hackensack, NJ, Keith of Clifton, NJ and PFC Matthew Busti, US Army of Athens stationed in Baghdad, Iraq; and siblings Gary of Athens and Manhattan, John of New York City, and Rhoda Busti-Bianchi of Athens.

The services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements have been made by the Sopris Funeral Home, Inc. in Coxsackie.

Richard J. McGovern          Chef and Aspiring student

Prattsville—Richard J. McGovern, 21, of Prattsville died suddenly on June 7, 2003.

He was born on May 18, 1982 to Stephen McGovern and May Ann (Garino) McGovern.

He was a 2003 BOCES graduate and was working as a chef at the Windhaven Pub in Hensonville. He loved to cook and he aspired to be a physical education teacher or child psychologist.  He was recently accepted to attend SUNY Cobleskill.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his sisters Stephanie, Jillian, Justine, Kelly, Kristina, Shannon, and Grace.

Calling hours will be at Decker Funeral Home, Main Street, Windham, on Monday, June9, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, June 10 at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Church, with the Rev. James Schiffer as celebrant.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s memory to the McGovern family would be greatly appreciated.

Stephen Murrin, Jr.    U. S. Marine Corps Veteran

Palenville—Stephen Murrin, Jr., 67, of 105 Kaaterskill Avenue, died Saturday, June 7, 2003 at home with all his family present.

He was born Sept. 6, 1935 in Flatbush, Brooklyn, the son of the late Stephen Murrin, Sr. and Catherine (Ward) Murrin, formerly of County Donegal, Ireland.

Stephen proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1956, and he was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. A Palenville resident since 1970, Stephen owned and Palenville Plumbing and Heating until ill health forced his retirement. 

Mr. Murrin was a communicant and Eucharistic Minister at the Sacred Heart Church in Palenville. He was a member of the Palenville Fire Department, Saugerties Elks Lodge, Knights of Columbus and was a former Palenville Scoutmaster.

 Mr. Murrin is survived by his wife by 45 years, Mrs. Joann E. (Martin) Murrin of Palenville, whom he married Nov. 16, 1957.

He is also survived by daughters Patricia Murrin-Lall of Little Torch Key, Fla., Coleen M. Wells and husband Keith of Ravena; son Stephen Bart Murrin III and wife Yvonne Latorre and Kerry Murrin, all  of Atlanta, GA; sisters Nancy Hyman of Leesburg, Fla, and Bridgette Eileen Jedica and husband Charles of Wantaugh, LI; grandchildren Ryan Lall of Palenville, Erin Lall of Tannersville, and Brenna Catherine Lattore-Murrin of Atlanta.  He is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephew.

Relatives and friends may call at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights in Catskill, on Sunday, June 8 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Monday, June 9 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, June 10 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at the Sacred Heart Church in Palenville. The Rev. William J. Winkler, Pastor, will be officiating. Interment will follow in the Palenville Cemetery.

Berta Scharl     Resort owner

Catskill—Mrs. Berta Scharl, 96, died peacefully at her own home on Friday, June 6, 2003.

Mrs. Scharl was born in Ausgburg, Germany on Nov. 3, 1906 and immigrated to the United States in 1926. She and her husband owned and operated the Green Lake View resort until 1968 when they retired.

She is survived by her son Karl Scharl of Voorheesville and her grandson Christian Scharl.

She was predeceased by seven siblings, and her husband Joseph Scharl on July 28, 1985.

A prayer service will be held on Sunday, June 9, 2003 at 8 p.m.  Friends and relatives are invited to call at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home at 139 Jefferson Heights on Sunday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Committal will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 9 at eh Catskill Rural Cemetery, with the Rev, John J. Murphy, Pastor of St. Patrick’s R. C. Church, officiating.  Those attending may meet at the funeral home prior to procession to the cemetery.

Memorial contribution may be made to the charity of one’s choice in lieu of flowers.

Prattsville—Karl Josef Eisenlauer, 84, of Prattsville, died Sunday at Albany Medical Center in Albany.

Born on Dec. 1, 1918, in Hamburg, Germany, he was the son of the late Josef and Hella (Kriebel) Eisenlauer.

Mr. Eisenlauer came to the United States from Germany in November 1952 and was a butcher by trade.

He was a member of the Reformed Dutch Church in Prattsville. He was also a member of the Mountain Masonic Lodge 529, Main St., Windham, since 1966 and was a Past Master of the Lodge.

Mr. Eisenlauer married Helga (Hawee) 56 years ago on July 1, 1946.

Besides his wife, survivors include his daughter Ruth Eisenlauer Christman, granddaughter Katherine Christman, granddaughter Ann Christman, and granddaughter Natalie Christman.

A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at the Reformed Church in Prattville with the Rev. Diana Smith officiating.

Arthur Sherman                  World War II veteran

Catskill—Arthur Sherman, 81, of 118 Jefferson Heights, Catskill, died Saturday, June 7, at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

He was born Sept. 8, 1921 in Cheshire, Mass.

Mr. Sherman served in the United States Army Air Corps. While stationed in the European Theater of Operations, he was shot down and taken as a prisoner of war for 23 months before liberation in 1945.

He was an employee of Miron Redi-Mix of Catskill for many years prior to his retirement in 1980.

He was a member of the Teamster, Disabled American Veterans, Catskill Elks Lodge and U. S. Army Air Corps 397th Bomb Group W. W. II Association.

Mr. Sherman was an avid vegetable gardener and mechanical tinkerer.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mrs. Bessie (Sutherland) Sherman of Catskill; two daughters Ronna Quinn and husband George of Catskill and Cindy Davis and husband Andrew of Catskill; six sisters, Ada Rocco, Dorothy Miller, Rose Mae Stumm, Geraldine Sutton, Janet Clearwater, Marilyn Bayly; four brothers, Richard Clearwater, Vernon  Clearwater, Reginald Clearwater and David Clearwater; five grandsons, Michael Quinn, Christian Quinn, Ian Quinn, Andrew Davis Jr. and Jourdyn Davis; two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Cameron Quinn; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Sherman was predeceased by a brother Norman Clearwater and four sisters, Eleanor Slater, Alice Erceg, Shirley Clearwater and Jennie Clearwater.

Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m., Saturday, June 15 in the Town of Catskill Cemetery Veterans Section. The Rev. Russell Sargent, pastor emeritus at Catskill United Methodist Church of Catskill, will be officiating.

Dr. George F. Wendt             Retired biology professor

Freehold—Dr. George F. Wendt, PhD., 78, of Mountain View Road, Freehold, died Sunday, June 8, 2003 at his home after a long illness.

He was born in the Bronx, May 30, 1925, and was the son of the late Gustav and Emily (DePalos) Wendt.

Mr. Wendt was a retired Professor of Biology for Long Island University.

He was an avid artist, musician and woodworker. He was the chairman of biology for Long Island University.

During World War II he served with the United States Marine Corps.  He was also a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus 6431. He was also a member of the Greenville American Legion Post 291. He was also a member of the Albany Musicians Union.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Therese Duffy Wendt of Freehold, a son, George B. Wendt of Long Island, a daughter Kathleen Wendt of Tampa, Fla., and a grandson, Eric M. Wendt of Flora Park.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, at the Richards Funeral Home, 383 Bross St., Cairo.

The Knights of Columbus 6431 will hold a service in his memory at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

The Greenville American Legion will hold service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham with the Rev. Francis McCloskey as the celebrant.

Interment will follow in the family plot of the Saratoga National Cemetery in Saratoga National Cemetery in Saratoga.

Ross Kruppenbacher         Vietnam veteran

Oak Hill—Ross J. Kruppenbacher, 55, died suddenly on June 8, 2003 at the Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

He was born on Sept. 19, 1947, the son of the late Joseph and Viola (Poultney) Kruppenbacher.

Ross was a Vietnam veteran serving in the U. S. Marine Corps and was a member of the Tri-Town Memorial Post VFW. He was an electrician working for CSX out of the Selkirk Railroad Yard.

Surviving are his wife Darlene Hood; children Ross J. Kruppenbacher Jr.  of East Durham, Sybil A. Kruppenbacher of Oak Hill and Sara B. Donato of East Durham; grandchildren Cheyene Kruppenbacher, Kayla Beth Donato and Ashley Marie Donato; sister Debra Heyl of Florida; brothers Andrew Kruppenbacher of Valatie and Joseph Kruppenbacher of Albany, and stepmother Helen Kruppenbacher.

According to his wishes, he was cremated at the Albany Rural Cemetery and there will be no services.

Arrangements were under the Cunningham Funeral Home in Greenville.

James E. Stewart            U. S. Army veteran

Acra—James E. Stewart, 73, of Old South Durham Highway, died suddenly on June 12, 2003 in the emergency room of Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

He was born in New York City on Nov. 26, 1929, and was the son of the late Edward and Jean (Reynolds) Stewart.

James has been an area resident of the Durham for 30 years. He is a member of the Cairo-Durham Elks and a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo.  During his time of employment, he worked in New York City at 778 Park Avenue and also owned and operated his own bread route.

James served his country in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. 

He is survived by his wife Marion (Buchanan) Stewart of Acra, daughter Mrs. Steven (Jean-Maria) Cody of Round Top, brother Edward Stewart of New York City, and grandson Steven Cody of Round Top, as well as several nieces and nephews.

During his many years of faithful service in the Province, John Baptist performed various ministries.  He was a parochial assistant at St. Raphael’s and Most Precious Blood in New York City; Professor at St. Anthony Philosophy Seminary in Catskill and Mount Alvernia Theological Seminary in Wappingers Falls;  Pastor at Sacred Heart Church in Palenville and St. Anthony’s in Troy;  Guardian at Mount Alvernia in Wappingers Falls; Master of Novices at Immaculate Conception in Troy and St. Anthony Novitiate in Catskill, Missionary in Guatemala and Honduras; Minister to local churches at St. Christopher Friary in Boston; and Apostolic Penitentiary at St. John Lateran in Rome, Italy.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony’s Friary, 24 Harrison St., Catskill.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Freehold—Evelyn Heinsohn, 94, formerly of Freehold, died Monday, June 16, at Good Samaritan Home in Delmar where she had recently become a patient.

She was born April 4, 1909 in New York City, the daughter of the late William and Margaret (Kurtz) Allen.

She and her husband owned the Candlelight Tavern on Route 32 in the Kiskatom until her retirement in 1978 to Freehold.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 293 Chapter.

Survivors include four children: Carol A. York of Freehold, Glen Schillinger of Walton, Jeanine Koehnkin of Pine Bush and Christine Fortunato of Kings Park; eight great-grand children and nephew, Teddy Heinsohn of Malvern.

Mrs. Heinsohn was predeceased by her husband Clarence John Heinsohn on May 18, 1978, son, George Schillinger in 1980, grandson, George Schillinger in 1991, cousins, Edith Smith of Cairo and Margaret Quis of Poughkeepsie.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

Belleair Bluffs, Fla.—Marcel J. “Junior” Touponse, 74, of Belleair Bluffs, Fla., formerly of Athens, died Saturday, June 14, 2003 at Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater, Fla.

He was born Oct. 11, 1928 in Hawthorne, N. J.

Mr. Touponse attended Delhi School for Agriculture and for many years he owned and operated a dairy farm.  He sold the dairy farm to go into the textile business with his father. He was a prominent figure in the textile industry, was the owner-operator of Windsor Textile in Newburgh, and is listed in the “Who’s Who in Textile Industry.” He retired to Athens in 1997 and spent many wonderful times there with his family and friends.  He will be remembered as a loving, caring and generous husband, father and friend.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Angela Bisgna Touponse of Belleair Bluffs, Fla.;  mother-in-law, Grace Bisgna; two sons, Marcel J. Touponse III and Bradford Touponse, both of New Jersey; two daughters, Marcy T. Gagne of Maine and Suzanne T. Carlo of New Jersey; sisters Grace of New York and Susan Kelly of Florida; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Touponse will be cremated in Florida where he was residing.

Athens—Orlando F. Mileti, of 4 Mile Point Road, died June 17, 2003 at the Indian River Nursing Home in Grainville, N. Y.

He was born in New York City and was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Schilero) Mileti.

Orlando was a retired machinist and he was a member of the Coxsackie-Athens Rotary Club, Coxsackie Knights of Columbus and a communicant of the St. Patrick’s Church of Athens.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann Sokol of Grainville, brother Frank Mileti of Long Island, N. Y., sister Adele Caffery of Florida and grandchildren David and Crystal Sokol.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on June 20, 2003 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Athens, with the Rev. Richard Doyle, pastor, as the celebrant.

Earlton—Margaret T. Frazita, 86, of Potic Creek Road, died peacefully June 18, 2003, surrounded by her loving family at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany.

She was born in Brooklyn on July 20, 1916 and was the daughter of the late Robert and Mary (Regan) Hansen.

Margaret was an Earlton resident for the past 35 years, a former member of the Earlton Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, The Columbiettes and the Coxsackie Senior Citizens.

She loved to spend time with her family and friends and enjoyed dinner out and family parties. She was a thoughtful loving mother and grandmother and a friend to many. She will be dearly missed.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Louis, to whom she was married for 65 yeas, as well as her brother Robert and sister Rita.

She is survived by her children Patricia Bente and son-in-law Sal, Richard and daughter-in-law Eileen, Margaret Paterniti and her husband Tony, Louis and daughter-in-law Sandy and Christine Frazita and her husband Philip; grandchildren Janet, Richard B., Richard F., Stephen, Lisa, Vincent, Adam, Amy, Sarah and Jesse; great-grandchildren Richard, Mathew, Stephen, Gianna, Samantha and Kristina; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Anna Eufemia                Restaurant owner

Albany—Anna Vincenza Marion Eufemia, 96, formerly of 160 Creamery Road in South Westerlo, N. Y., went to rest on June 18, 2003 at the Eden Park Nursing Care Home in Albany.

Born in New York City on Jan. 25, 1907, Anna followed the path of service to her church. As a communicant of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church since 1945, Anna was also a devoted member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Rosary Altar Society at St. John’s.  She lovingly crocheted baptismal blankets for the newly baptized of St. John’s parish and knitted lap robes for the shut-ins in local hospitals and nursing homes. Anna and her children, in her husband Vincent’s memory donated the beautiful church steeple and chimes at St. John’s.

Anna’s love of life, music and especially dancing shoed in her daily life. She had the ability to wrap you up in her generous smile and he “I love you’s” to all she met. Along with her husband Vincent (Jim) Eufemia, Anna opened the famous VinceAnna’s Restaurant in South Westerlo in 1945 and later another VinceAnna’s in New Jersey and Florida. Anna and Vince, along with children James, Charles and Virginia, worked side by side until his death in 1965 whereupon James took over with his mother and son Charles at VinceAnna’s in Florida.

As a young girl, Anna worked as a seamstress for a famous dress designer in New York City where she learned to make fancy dresses and gowns.  When the time came she designed and made her daughter’s wedding gown. Anna was always eager to offer help in sharing her talents of sewing and crocheting. She enjoyed attending the luncheon’s with her senior friends at the Grange. Everyone knew Anna by her smile and concerns for others. Her love for her family and friends was always present and will never be forgotten.

A devoted mother to her children, she is survived by her daughter Virginia (Eufemia) Mangold of South Westerlo; sons Charles Eufemia of New Port Richey, Fla. and James Eufemia of South Westerlo; son-in-law Robert Mangold and daughter-in-law Brenda Eufemia. She was the greatest Gram to Robbie, Jeffrey, Kim, Michael and PattiAnn, Kevin, Mickey Gins, Teresa, Deanna and Angela; the very best “Nonie” (great-gramma) to Charles, Joseph, Sal and Sam DeTillio, Christopher Marks, Sarah and Victoria Mangold, Melissa and Robbie Mangold, Nicholas, Ryan and Evan Mangold, Thurman Picarelli, Jesse Clark, Michael Eufemia-McNerney and to Danielle Eufemia.

Anna was predeceased by her loving husband Vincent, daughter Patricia Eufemia, son Joseph Eufemia, daughter-in-law Joyce Eufemia and her sisters Gertrude Caffiero and Barbara Rugard.

South Cairo—Dorothy M. Giuffrida, 75, of Route 23B, South Cairo, died Thursday, June 18, 2003 at Community Hospice at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson, after a long illness.

She was born in Mellville, Pa., on Aug. 14, 1927, and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (Robins) Heverly.

Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Giuffrida was employed as a secretary for the I. Miller Shoe Company on Long Island.

Mrs. Giuffrida and her husband were the owners of the Stage Coach Motel in South Cairo.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years and two days Alfred G. Giuffrida of South Cairo; a daughter, Diane Scott of Medford, L. I.; a son, Thomas Giuffrida of Springhill, Fla., a daughter, Nancy Giuffrida of Middle Island, L. I.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, Mrs. Giuffrida was predeceased by her son, Robert Giuffrida, eight years ago. She was also predeceased by her brother-in-law, Peter Giuffrida, who died June 18, 2003.

Private cremation will take place Friday at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands.

A memorial service will take place at a later dater at the convenience of the family.

Cairo—Peter J. Giuffrida, 91, of Meadow Lane, Cairo, died June 18, 2003, at his resident after a long illness.

He was born in New York City on July 29, 1911 and was the son of the late Sabastian and Vince (Mario) Giuffrida.

Mr. Giuffrida was a well-known musician in the New York City area. 

Survivors include his wife Arelis (Vasquez) Giuffrida of Cairo, and also his brother Alfred G. Giuffrida of South Cairo.

Mrs. Giuffrida’s sister-in-law Dorothy M. Giuffrida, died Thursday June 19, 2003 at Community Hospice of Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Richards Funeral Home, Bross St., Cairo.

Prayer services will take place Monday evening at the funeral home, the time to be announced.

Entombment will take place Tuesday, June 24 at the Ferncliff Mausoleum in Hartsdale, N.Y.

William Emory Goff            Mechanic

Cornwallville—William Emory Goff, 86, died at the Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson on June 17, 2003.

William was born in Cornwallville on April 7, 1917, son of the late Eugene W. and Laura (White) Goff.

A self-educated man, he was known as an excellent mechanic, carpenter and electrician. An avid sportsman, he also loved the outdoors.  He had formerly worked as a mechanic at the  Yeomans, Garage in Norton Hill before spending three years working in Florida.  His love of the Cornwallville and East Durham area brought him back.  He then operated the East Durham Garage.

He was a member of the Oak Hill-Durham U.M. Church and a lifelong member of the East Durham Volunteer Fire Co.

Surviving are sons Brian W. and his wife Rita of East Durham and Steven E. of Cornwallville; sister Maude Kwak and her husband Konwong of South Windsor, Conn.; and nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife Elsie (Paul) Goff in 1998; son Lawrence P. Goff and brothers Reginald and Victor Goff.

Funeral services will be on Friday, June 27, 2003 at 11 a.m. from the Oak Hill-Durham United Methodist Church in Durham. Friends may call at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Route 81, Greenville on Thursday, June 26 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Cairo—Gloria Hanley, 75. of  Pine Tree Garden Apartments, Cairo, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

She was born in Lynbrook, N. Y., and was the daughter of the late William and Francis Austin.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Eden Park Nursing Home, Catskill and also the Community Action Program of Catskill as a senior companion.

She has been an area resident since 1961. She loved crocheting. She loved her grandchildren.

She also loved the older people that she worked with at the Senior Companion program.

Survivors include a daughter, Arlene F. Eifler of Catskill; two brothers, Hillard Austin of Oneonta and George Austin of North Carolina; three sisters, Agnes Kemna of New Hampshire and Hilda Lewis and Jean Lipinski, both of Long Island;  two grandchildren, Colleen and Stacey; and five great-grandchildren.

Private cremation will take place at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands.

Syracuse—Mrs. Dorothy Hungerford, 87, of 989 James St., died suddenly on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at her home.

She was born June 13, 1916 in Catskill, the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Kennedy) Hoy Jr.

Dorothy was a graduate of St. Patrick’s Academy in Catskill; Mildred Elly School of Business; and Albany Certified School of Practical Nurses.

She was employed at the Greene County Clerk, Department of Motor Vehicles from 1963 until her retirement in 1983.

She was predeceased by her first husband Rowland E. Alsid, who was killed in action during World War II in 1944; her second husband Glenn J. Hungerford; and siblings Joseph D. Hoy, Kathryn H. Izzo Geary and Margie H. Kratovich Crommie. 

She is survived by her children, Rowland E. (Bud) Alsid Jr. and his wife Holly of Liverpool, Patricia A. Thompson and husband Gerald of Brunswick and Glenda J. Hungerford of Barrington, N. H.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy’s passing brings closure to several generations of the Hoy, Warrington and Wallace families of Green and Columbia counties.

Relatives and friends may call at the Traver & McCurry Funeral Home, 234 Jefferson Heights in Catskill, today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 21 at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s R. C. Church of Catskill. The Rev. John Murphy, pastor, will be officiating. Private cremation will be performed at Park View Cemetery in Schenectady.   Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Catskill at the convenience of the family.

Catherine M. Sievers              Seamstress

South Cairo—Catherine M. Sievers, 89, a resident of Eden Park Nursing Home, Catskill, formerly of  South Cairo, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at the Eden Park Nursing Home, Catskill, after a long illness.

She was born Oct. 2, 1913 in Brooklyn.

Mrs. Sievers was a retired seamstress.

Locally, survivors include a niece, Joyce Prapolsky of South Cairo, and several other nieces and nephews, also two sisters in Germany.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, June 23, at the Richards Funeral Home, Bross St., Cairo, with the Rev. Stan Lemons, pastor of the Medway Congregational Church of Medway, officiating.

Private interment will follow in the family plot of the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.

Jill Vining          Legal secretary

Ashland—Jill Vining, 52, died Monday, June 16, 2003 at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York after a long illness.

She was born on Dec. 11, 2950 in Elkton, Md., to Harry and Dorothy (Brown) Zieber.

Jill was a legal secretary who worked at the law office of Brown, Kelleher, Zwickel and Wilhelm in Windham for many years. She began her secretarial career at Stewart’s GMC in Maplecrest. At present, she was the Ashland Court Clerk.

Jill is survived by her beloved husband Lowell Vining, who she married 33 years ago on April 4, 1970; son Scott; grandchildren Scott Jr. and Lakken Marie Vining; and siblings Jacqueline Zieber, Adrienne Boyd and Harry Zieber.

She was predeceased by  sister Barbara Halligan.

Jill’s’ grandchildren were the joy and sunshine in her life.  Jill lived a good full life while working at a career that she loved and performed do diligently at.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Monday, June 23, 2003 at the Maplecrest Free Methodist Church with Pastor Michael Jansen, the Rev. Robert Keneally officiating. A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow the service in the church annex.

Carlos Collier     Coach Line worker

Coxsackie—Carlos T. Collier, 90, passed away suddenly on June 16, 2003.

A lifetime resident of Coxsackie, Carlos was a parishioner of the Christ Episcopal Church and was a member of the Free and Accepted Mason, belonging to the Masonic Ark Lodge #48 of Coxsackie.  He spent most of his happiest days working in his yard and enjoying nature.  During his days of employment, he was employed by New York state and the Mountain View Coach Lines.

Survivors include his daughters Lorraine Frisone of Lake Worth, Fla. and Gertrude (William) Rosamelia of Wellington, Fla., as well as four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will take place on Sunday, June 22, at the W. C. Brady’s Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, 97 Mansion Street in Coxsackie, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.

The Masonic Rites ceremony will take place on Sunday evening at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

A graveside funeral service will take place on Monday, June 23, at 10 a.m. at the Riverside Cemetery in Coxsackie. The Rev. Henry Verdaasdonk, Deacon of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church of Catskill, will be officiating.

Catskill—Geraldine Coleman, 81, a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, June 19, 2003 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.

She was born April 13, 1922 in Catskill, the daughter of the late Augusta and Lucy (Brooks) Coleman.

Miss Coleman was an employee of Caden Brothers in Hudson prior to her retirement.  She was a communicant at St. Patrick’s R. C. Church in Catskill and was a member of the St. Patrick’s Rosary-Altar Society.

Teresa Constantine                   Fashion store owner

Cairo—Teresa “Tessie” Cardinale Constantine, of South Cairo, entered into eternal rest with our Lord Jesus Christ peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, June 21, 2003 at Columbia Memorial Hospital.

Tessie, as she was known by all, was born on March 9, 1908 in Bari, Italy, the daughter of the late Thomas and Vittoria Cardinale.

At eight years old, she came to America with her family through Ellis Island.  Her account of her arrival and stay is part of Ellis Island’s oral history.

On Oct. 3, 1932 she married William Paszuale “Patty” Constantine, who predeceased her on March 22, 1985.

She has been a resident of South Cairo for the past 10 years, previously living in Poughkeepsie and Brooklyn where she spent most of her adult life.

Along with her husband, she was owner of Emmy Frocks in Brooklyn and Patti Ann Fashions in Peekskill until their retirement in 1975.

Tessie was predeceased by her husband, sister Marion Muccitelli and brother Joseph Cardinale.

She is survived by her children, Emily Di Salvo and her husband Leonard of South Cairo, Teresa Califano and her husband Albert of Beacon, NY and Vito Constantine and his wife Jeanne of Putnam Valley, NY; and grandchildren, Patricia Nelson and her husband Steve. Mary Chadudrjian and her husband Randy, Andre Di Salvo, Mark Califano and his wife Joanne, William Califano and his wife Patricia, Christine Sullivan and her husband Dennis, Sharon Abrams and her husband Cliff, Edward Seacor and his wife June, Russell Seacur and his wife Mary, and Patrick Constantine and his wife Stephanie. She is also survived by 19 great-grandchildren, a great-great grandson, and many nieces, nephews, cousin and dear friends.

She was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church in Cairo where a mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 23, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jeremiah Nunan, Pastor, officiating.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Poughkeepsie where she will be laid to rest with her beloved husband Patty.  Friends and relatives are invited to call at the Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, 139 Jefferson Heights in Catskill on Sunday, June 22, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Haines Falls—Nan Young, 76, of Hines Falls, died Monday, June 23, 2003 at Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill surrounded by her loving family.

She was born March 30, 1927 in Elizabeth, N.J., to William and Kathryn (Doty) Mullhole.

Mrs. Young was a homemaker and devoted mother.  Over three years she watched many children. She was known a “Nan Nan” to the children she loved and nurtured.

Survivors include her four children, Donna (Rick) Deemer, Kathryn (Walter- deceased December 2002) Warren (Diane) and Dale (Joseph) Hagg, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. young is predeceased by a brother William Mullhole of Connecticut.

Calling hours will be conducted 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, at the Aston-Basagic Funeral Home, Hunter.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 25 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Haines Falls.

Interment will be in St. Francis De Sales Cemetery, Elka Park.

Palenville—Lillian Stabile, 86, a long-time area resident, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill.

She was born March 25, 1917 in Brooklyn, the daughter of Edward and Doretta (Schoener) von Kampen.

Mrs. Stabile owner and operated the Palenville Market for many years with her husband Frank P. Stabile St., who predeceased her on April 1, 1997.

Mrs. Stabile is survived by her sons Frank P. Stabile Jr. and Robert J. Stabile; daughters-in-law Eileen Cunningham Stabile and Marge Kordich Stabile, all of Palenville; sister Gertrude Stulz of New Lebanon and Viola von Kampen of New Jersey; grandchildren Kerri Posson of Latham, Susan Stabile of Bryan, Texas, Cheryl Toole of Newton, Mass., Bonnie Worth of Athens, Jennifer Stabile of Amsterdam and Frank P. Stabile III of Tillson; great-grandchildren Logan and Justin Worth, both of Athens; and several nieces and nephews.

Joseph E. Szucs               World War II veteran

Round Top—Joseph E. Szucs, 82, died on June 25, 2003 at Albany Medical Center after a long illness.

He was born in Uniontown, Pa., on Sept. 21, 1920, the son of the late Emory and Anny (Gados) Szucs.

Mr. Szucs was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo. He served his country in the U. S. Navy during World War II and was a member of the Cairo American Legion Post No. 983. During his days of employment, he worked for the Colaruso Brothers Construction Company in Hudson.

He is survived by siblings Frank Byuas of Catskill, Michael Szucs of Long Island and Mrs. Raymond (Anna) Michaels; niece Mrs. Lawrence (Andrea) Cerullo of Round Top and nephew Alan J. Mongardi of Sidney, as well as other nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 28, 2003 at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo with the Rev. J. Nunan, pastor, as celebrant.  Interment will follow in the family plot of Cairo Cemetery.

Relative and friends are cordially invited to attend calling hours at the Richards Funeral Home, Bross Street in Cairo, on Friday, June 27, 2003 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.  The Cairo American Legion Post No. 983 will hold services in his memory Friday evening at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m.

Robert German          Foreman

Windham—Robert German, 73, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003 at his residence.

Born in Jewett on March 22, 1930, he was the son of the late Leonard and Evelyn (Knapp) German.

He served in the United States Navy from Feb. 17, 1948 to Feb. 18, 1952.

Mr. German was employed as a foreman for VEPCO (Virginia Electric Power Company) of West Virginia.  He was treasurer for Windham/Hensonville U. M. Church as well as a member of many other committees at the church.  He was also treasurer for the Masonic Mountain Lodge No. 529, past commander of the James F. Carty VFW No. 1545 Post, past scoutmaster in Virginia, head committeeman of Troop 25 BSA in Prattsville, a great friend of the Mountain Top community and was an active member of the WAJ Alumni Association.

Mr. German is survived by his beloved wife Dorothy (Forte) German; siblings Josephine Tompkins and Wallace German; children Robert Donald German II and Karen Smith; stepchildren Gregory Shamus, Irene Schneider, Angela Shamns, Eva Barry Held and Charlene Sizemore.

Viewing will take place at the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., in Windham, on Saturday, June 28, 2003 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted on Saturday by members of the James F. Carty VFW Post No. 1545 at 7:30 p.m. followed by the Masonic Mountain Lodge No. 529 at 7:45 p.m. and the Order of the Eastern Star at 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, June 29 at 1:30 p.m. at the Windham United Methodist Church with the Rev. Maybelle Renzi officiating.

Ethel May Baitsholts-Konard     Greenville resident

Greenville—Ethel May “Rusty” (Barber) Baitsholts-Konrad, 65, of Greenville, did Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at Albany Medical Center after a long battle with diabetes and heart problems.

Born June 18, 1938 in Schenectady, she was the daughter of the late Clara Lydia (Baldwin) and Ralph G. Barber.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends as well as crocheting, baking and doing puzzles,.

Survivors include her long time companion Ludwig (Lou) Rudolph Konrad; 6 children, Ronald Baitsholts, Lucy Ann Pough-Bender, Ralph D. Baitsholts, Raymond J. Baitsholts, Lisa J. Jordan and David J. Baitsholts, Jr.; 15 grandchildren, 6 great-grandsons; two brothers, Steven of Maryland and George of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.

Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 state Route 81, Greenville.

Funeral services will be Monday 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be on Tuesday, 11 a.m. at the Westerlo Central Cemetery, South Westerlo.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Town of Westerlo Ambulance or to the Kidney Foundation.

Karen Cardinale            Nurse

Coxsackie—Karen E. Cardinal, 57, of 7 Hillcrest Street, died on June 26, 2003 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson after a long illness.

She was born in Syracuse, NY on April 26, 1946 and was the daughter of the late Howard and Dorothy Baker.

Karen has been an areas resident for over 30 years. She received her Registered Nursing degree at Albany Medical Center. Prior to her illness, she was employed at the Greene County Memorial Hospital and also Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.  She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Athens, and she was an avid gardener.

She is survived by her husband Mahlon R. Cardinale of Coxsackie; sons Matthew of Slingerland, Peter of Athens and Jeffrey of Coxsackie; siblings George Baker of Colorado and Barbara Brandon of North Carolina; and grandchildren Connor, Tyler, Nathan, Troy, Addison and Ian-Thayer.

Graveside memorial services will take place on Tuesday, July 1, at 1 p.m. in the family plot of the New Athens Rural Cemetery. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery for the service.,

Private cremation will take place at the Albany  Rural Crematorium on Monday, June 30.

Lucy DiGirolamo            Restaurant owner

Cairo—Lucy Nardone DeGirolamo, 86, died on June 26, 2003 at Holy Family Home in Brooklyn after a brief illness.

Mrs. DiGirolamo was born in New York City on Dec. 13, 1916, the daughter of the late Saverio Nardone and Grace (Adonizia) Nordone.

She and her husband Michael DiGirolamo, whom she married on July 23, 1941, were former owners of Lulu’s Restaurant in Purling for 40 years, retiring in 1978.

She was the president of the Ladies Fire Auxiliary Round Top Fire Co., a member of the Italian American Club, VFW and Elks Club in Cairo.  She was also active in the Senior Citizens Center, Meals on Wheels and was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo.

Mrs. DiGirolamo was predeceased by her husband on Sept. 5, 1992, grandson, Jeffrey and Gregory Cannone, and several brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her children Barbara Cannone and her husband Richard of Poughquag, NY and Michael DiGirolamo of Brooklyn, NY; sister Connie Cioffi of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; grandchildren Lisa DiGirolamo of Brooklyn, Michael DiGirolamo of Los Angeles, Ca and Richard Connone and his wife Jennifer of Sanford, Fla.; as well as many nieces and nephews. 

Friends and family may call at the Horn and Thomes Inc. Funeral Home, 83 E. Main St. in Pawling, NY from 8:30 am. To 9:15 a.m. on Monday, June 30. 

A mass of Christian Burial will take place Monday, June 30, at 10 a.m. at the St. Denis Church in Sylvan Lake, NY, with the Rev. William Cosgrove officiating. Interment will take place in the Round Top Cemetery.
