Our new member is Dennis Mower. Our renewal rate is 72.89%. Since the beginning of the year we have attracted 20 new members.

Facebook: We currently have 972 members, 11 members more than February 2015. Through Facebook we had discussions on the Blue Spruce Farm, the location of the Love Star Theatre on Main Street, Bicycle Bill (it was the consensus Bill Staker was the original Bicycle Bill). Collections: No items received. Item sales: John and Gail sold 3 depot shirts, 4 rails to the Catskills DVD’s, 3 postal Commemoratives and 1 plain postcard at the Train Show. $90 was collected from the raffle on the Oil Lamp at the Train show.

Treasurer's Report: There was no Treasure report. Jill was gathering information for the New York State Sales tax that was due in by March 20, 2015. We can talk about scanner needs for Jill at the next meeting.

Projects: Cairo Historical Society Building. John updated everyone on the asbestos status with the building. He stated he is in contact with Michael Frueh and Michael said that the cost may not be as expensive as we first thought. Possibly in the range of $300 - $500 for removal of the asbestos in the chimney. Michael will give us an estimate, however we need to get his liability insurance and worker’s compensation exempt form (if he is exempt) information from him first before we move forward with the project with him.

So far on the Go-Fund-Me page we have set up for the Cairo Historical Society Building Fund we have received $155.00 in donations.

John also stated that we now have a building permit from the Town and will need to have it posted in plain sight on the building during construction. We are looking to begin work as soon as the weather breaks.

It was also noted that Maggio and Sons was donating the work for the water tie-in for the Cairo Historical Society.

It was noted that Manny is close to completion on the sign for the front of the building. Someone will need to pick up the sign once it is completed.

Robert Uzzilia brought up the second floor renovations to the second floor and according to code there needs to be an 8 foot height requirement on the second floor.

We also talked about a Construction Manager being needed at the Headquarters building site of if the Building Committee would oversee the project. This will be discussed further at the next meeting.  There is a meeting with Ruppert and the Building Committee on April 1st at the Cairo Public Library to go over building plans. The meeting time is 4:30 pm.

License Plate Toppers: Currently delayed due to the February snow storms.

Hometown Hero’s: We have added 5 new banners to our collection. The information for the banners have been received along with payment.

The new Hometown Hero’s Banner applicants are Harold Elton Rouse, Jr., Arthur C. Harm and Justin Jere Patterson. Applications are in process for Ernest F. Passler, Chris Gibson, Stephen Romanek, Thomas Valentine Staker, and William Pierson.

John noted that Sylvia has made a proposal that the following veterans be the 5 CHS funded banners: Nelson Walters, Aaron Betts, Stephen Burgess, Eliab Alden, and John H Betts.

Linda and Sylvia have completed 63 Hometown Hero’s biographies so far out of the 212 that will be listed in the book. The four new ones completed include Matthew Sayre, Edward B Hatton, Gerard Patrick Daly and Renate Alexander.

There are 12 books on pre-order as of right now.  John noted that the Cairo Historical Society was turned down on a grant funded by the Dyson Foundation but they stated they generally do not give grants to Historical Societies. Our project was outside the scope of the projects they support.

Sylvia has written another grant to the Furthermore Foundation and that grant was submitted by the March 1st deadline.

Historical Marker:  The Cairo Historical Society will also need to talk more about what Historical Marker we would like to request for this year and come up with some ideas for the new marker.

Cairo Family Tree: No additional requests have been made.

Logo: Mike Lamanac said the logo is with a friend of his to adjust the lettering in the Logo for the Cairo Historical Society and he should have it back this week. The winter weather has been part of the issue this year for getting it completed.

State of the Union Dinner: The dinner was a huge success! We ended up with a profit of $2,569.53. We had a total of 110 tickets sold ahead of time, 5 were sold at the door and 4 were complimentary tickets to the Bank of Coxsackie. With increased attendance it was agreed we would probably need to look for another venue for this years’ dinner.

John noted that this event could not be as huge of a success as it was if not for all of those who volunteered. A big thank you went out to the following folks: John and Gail Kargoe, Ron Hasenkopf, Sylvia Hasenkopf, Elton Rouse, Derick Hasenkopf, Mark Robichaud, Helen Chadderdon, Robert Dodge, Robert Uzzilia, Laurie and Ron Mcgyver and Sherry B True.

New Business: Annual Meeting and voting was discussed and John stated that both Ann Clapper and Ron Hasenkopf will run for reelection again this year. The voting will take place at next month’s meeting. Robert Uzzilia bring a voting box to the meeting next month.

John noted that there will be an Annual Meeting review at the next meeting also.

John said that Elizabeth Brinkerhoff had been in touch with him via email about the 3rd annual picnic in the park to be held on May 2nd. The Cairo Historical Society will have a table there and will be able to sell items but will need volunteers to help man the booth. The set up begins at 10:15 am May 2nd.

The Train Committee talked briefly about the next step for the fencing of the escapement. The committee will meet at another specific time. John noted that the work done on the rails being laid so far has all been donated so there were no costs to the Historical Society. He mentioned that keeping folks interested in the train depot would also help the overall interest in the Cairo Historical Society and could possibly help shed interest to the needs of the Building Fund.

The meeting was closed at 8pm with a motion by Mark Grupe and it was seconded by Robert Uzzilia.

Old Business:

  1. Mike Lamanec presented 7 versions of the proposed Cairo Logo. After some discussion the membership selection decide upon Logo 1 as the new Cairo Logo. Many thanks to Michael Lamanec for his work in providing the seven style choices and the use of his line drawing of the falls that appears in the Logo. In addition, many thanks to everyone who worked on this project over the years: Hillary Higgins, Robert Uzzilia, Linda Larsen, Rita Colger Carver and Sylvia Hasenkopf. With each proposed logo by the various teams we moved closer to the final logo.
It was suggested to copyright/trademark this logo. Sylvia will look into it and report at the next meeting.
  2. John reported that the Rasmussens have been made aware of the interest of the Cairo Historical Society in the One Room School House. We are on a holding pattern until they decide.

Projects:

  1. Cairo Headquarters:
    1. Sylvia advised that the Cairo Historical Society fundraising sign has been installed. And it looks great. Hasenkopf Quality Construction donated the materials to mount the sign and their time.
    2. The sewer is scheduled to be installed by Maggio & Sons on June 26th.
    3. Discussions have begun with masonry firms regarding the foundation.
    4. The doors and windows are expected to cost close to $12,000. Sylvia and Ron spent some time at Home Depot and have received a quote on the Anderson windows and the doors for the building. Richard suggested that we contact the window manufacturer to see whether they would be willing to assist with a discount.

  2. Cairo Depot:
    1. John K. advised that the following volunteers, Michael Kargoe, John Kargoe, Elton Rouse, Robert Uzzilia, Sherry B. True, Helen Chadderdon and Carol Spohler attended the Soccer tournament on one or both days, June 6 & 7 at Riedlbauers. The 50/50 raised $257.50. She will assess them for applicability to the Hometown Heroes Book printing.
    4. Sylvia advises that 92 biographies have been completed. 168 to go.

  4. Archival Day 2015 is scheduled for July 18, 2015 at the Cairo Library from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

New Business:

  1. Neil Schoenfeld advised the members present that a new propane storage facility is being planned for the vacant land by the new Dollar General. He suggests that the Cairo Historical Society should write a letter to the Town Planning Board expressing their concern about a facility like this which will obstruct the scenic views of the mountains for all visitors to the town. After some discussion Sylvia suggested that the discussion should be continued at the next Board of Trustees meeting. All agreed.

Mike Lamanec moved to close the meeting at 8:08, Mark Grupe seconded the motion. All agreed and the meeting was closed.

There were insufficient members present for a meeting in July, therefore the meeting was cancelled.

Sylvia Hasenkopf, Secretary

Members Present:  John Kargoe, Sylvia Hasenkopf, Elton Rouse, Linda Larsen, Sherry True, Robert Uzzilia, Michael Lamanec, Ron Hasenkopf, Mark A. Grupe, Ted Banta.

President John Kargoe called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance.

1)    Minutes from the August 20, 2015 meeting were reviewed and approved. Elton Rouse made a motion to accept the minutes as written and Mark Grupe seconded the motion. All agreed and the motion was passed.

2)    No Financial Report presented.

3)    Membership update: Our current membership is 134 members, an increase of 2 members since August’s meeting.  New members since the last report are: Jackie Patterson and Richie and Hanni Obach.

4)    We currently have 1087 Facebook members, 7 members more than in August 2015. This month we discussed the County Farm (dedication of historical marker and BBQ)., Errante’s Cedar Terrace, O’Connell Farm, Benny Richman and Cairo’s various Airports and much more. Old Business:

  1. Sylvia indicated she will pursue the steps in Trade marking our Logo in the fall.

Projects:

  1. Cairo Depot – no update.
  2. CHS Headquarters – Sylvia indicated that there has been no new activity on the HQ’s since August’s meeting.  Mark had raised concerns in the August meeting regarding the structural soundness of the building, citing concerns over the weakness of the wall where there was the chimney fire and the condition of the existing sill (it’s rotted). Sylvia noted that these concerns were reviewed by Kaaterskill Associates when they did our drawings and are not unknown to the Board. Kaaterskill Associates felt that the “bones” of the building were still solid and could be retained for use in the renovations of the front part of the building. There is no question that the damaged wall would need to be braced when the building is lifted and part of the wall replaced when the renovations took place. The sill will be replaced before the building is returned to the new foundation.
  3. Hometown Heroes – the Hometown Heroes banners are scheduled to come down the week of October 19th. Robert Hempstead has agreed to supply a bucket truck and men to assist with the process. Ray Houghtaling has agreed to coordinate. John Kargoe indicates he has four volunteers to assist in the cleaning and packing of the banners.
Sylvia has indicated that she has come across a number of veteran’s biographies that do not have much material to work with. She has been successful in obtaining the DD214 Separation documents from the County Clerk’s Office, as the service period is in the Public Domain, however not all vets filed their DD214’s at the County level. She would like to ask the table whether there is support to order the DD214’s from NARA. The cost would be $25 per veteran. She has two veterans currently that have confirmed DD214’s at NARA. Mike Lamanec motioned that Sylvia may order the two DD214’s at $25 each from Nara. Elton seconded the motion. All were in favor and the motion passed.
  4. Cairo’s Hometown Heroes, the book – Sylvia advised that she and Linda have completed 119 biographies and have restarted their intensive writing. Pre-orders stand at 38 books ordered.
  5. Cairo Family Tree – Sylvia advised that we have received three additional sponsors for the family tree: McDonalds has purchased the Mama Duck, an Anonymous Donor has purchased a bluebird, and the Inn at Hill Crest Manor has purchased a bronze leaf. Donations to date are $11,750.
Sylvia indicated that Augie Freemann Jr. has approached the Cairo Historical Society looking to partner with us on the Cairo Family Tree Project. He owns Unlimited Metalwork and proposes to make our leaves, animals and trees for us at cost. The Board of Trustees has voted to accept his proposal. Many thanks Augie!
  6. Sylvia advises that the historical marker dedication for the County Home will happen on September 19th. Immediately following the dedication is our Chicken BBQ. We have the capacity to sell 200 dinners, but have only sold 49 tickets so far. Here’s hoping that we have a large walk-in crowd.

New Business:

  1. Tom Plank has approached the CHS to ask whether we would be interested in participating in the upcoming Dare Program in Angelo Canna Park. Although a worthy idea, there isn’t enough time to put anything together and there is not enough volunteers to man a table. Mike Lamanec advised that he will have a table in the Park for the Purling Fish and Game Club and would be willing to place literature about the Cairo Historical Society on the table as well. Robert U. mentioned that in previous years he has put together a program about old games children used to play which was well received.
  2. Sylvia read an email she received from Susan White commending the CHS on the publication of the Cairo Herald Journal. Email is attached to the minutes. It is great to get such favorable feedback.
  3. Sylvia received another email from Hammond Fox. He was corresponding with “Debbie” who was trying to find out the name of the resort her family stayed in during their vacations to Round Top in the 1960’s. Based upon her description (attached to the minutes) it sounded like the family stayed either in the Winter Clove, Crystal Brook or Glens Falls as those are the only Round Top Resorts where guests had to cross a road to get to the swimming pool that the meeting members could recall. This info will be relayed to Hammond. (Follow up: Hammond indicated that it was decided that Debbie’s family stayed at the Round Top House).
  4. Sylvia received an email from Mike Esslie indicating that Pastor Jason Thompson and his church had recently purchased the old Morton’s Store on Main St. They are looking for ideas to improve the appearance and façade of the building. Ted Banta mentioned that there are Main St. Revitalizations Grants offered through the Greene County Economic Development group in Catskill and that Carl Heck would be the contact person. Robert Uzzilia said he would stop by and Sylvia indicated she would also.
  5. Sylvia indicated that she has about two weeks to get the grant together for the 2016 William G. Pomeroy Foundation’s Historical Marker Program. It appears that the proofs she will need for a historical marker at the Shinglekill will take longer to locate than she has the time to do so. She proposes that the 2016 grant be for James Barker, the Patroon. Members were agreeable with the proposal.
  6. Mike Lamanec indicated that he had an item to propose to the table. It appears that the monthly meetings of the CHS have really become business meetings and we no longer discuss historical topics, which is really the reason most people attend the meetings. Consequently the number of people who attend has been dropping, to the point that in some months we have only Board members in attendance. He proposes that in the new year a new format be adopted. The business section of the meeting be no longer than half an hour and be restricted to only necessary business items that cannot wait until the next quarterly meeting. Also, that monthly topics be developed that can be posted in advance, so people can come to those meetings. Sylvia indicated that she also feels that way and that it is incumbent on the Board of Trustees to discuss a new format at the next Board meeting. Mark motioned that this topic be a discussion point at the next Board meeting and Mark seconded the motion. All agreed and the motion was passed.

John moved to close the meeting at 8:15.  All agreed.

Share Session:

  1. Sylvia brought in pictures that we have recently received via our Facebook page:

Guest: Howard Parmalee, Dorothy Grupe

President John Kargoe called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance.

1)    Minutes from the September 17, 2015 meeting were reviewed and approved. Sherry B. True made a motion to accept the minutes as written and Ron Hasenkopf seconded the motion. All agreed and the motion was passed.

2)    No Financial Report presented. The bank account balances for the two accounts of the CHS at the National Bank of Coxsackie were presented: our main account has a balance of $43,956.13 of which $20,000.00 is reserved funds for the printing of the Hometown Heroes book. The building account has $17,385.68.

3)    Membership update: Our current membership is 141 members, an increase of 7 members since September’s meeting.  New members since the last report are: Doug Dittmar, Mike Scheulen, Art Byas, Ann Bentley, Mary Heisinger, Snyder Family, Phyllis Huntley.

4)    We currently have 1134 Facebook members, 47 members more than in September 2015. This month we discussed a picture of the 38th Borthwick Family Reunion that was taken at the IOOF 417 building in Cairo back on September 1, 1947. We also discussed many Hometown Heroes questions that are helping facilitate the writing of the biographies of the veterans. The new wooden boxes that the CHS is selling were also posted as was the notice of our upcoming event Native Americans in Greene County. Many other topics were also discussed – it was a very busy Facebook month.

5)    Collections: Personal reminiscence of someone in WW2 in the Philippines (Fisher or Millbank Family possibly) – Robert Uzzilia

6)    Item sales in last month: 2 Cairo baseball caps, 2 license plate toppers, 7 wooden boxes,  14 knives with boxes, 2 Cairo bi-centennial t-shirts, 2 Depot t-shirts, 1 Portrait of the Past, 2 Greene County USA DVD’s, 1 Mountain House DVD, 1 Capitol Hill Fire DVD, 1 Prohibition DVD, 17 postcards, 3 Cairo Logo wooden boxes.  Many of these sales occurred at the Apple Harvest Festival.

Old Business:

  1. Sylvia indicated she will pursue the steps in Trade marking our Logo in the fall.

Projects:

  1. CHS Headquarters – Sylvia indicated that we have received permission from our neighbor to the north with the apartment building to remove as many trees as we wish from along the driveway. Gemini Construction came in and removed 6 trees. Gemini Construction provided a bid of $5000 to lift and move our existing building back on a rail system and after the new foundation is poured, bring it back and place it back on the new foundation. We are expecting to move the building sometime in October.
Mark Grupe indicated that he and Richard plan on building a rail system in steel that will attach to the outside frame of the house with bolts. This will allow the building to be attached to wheels and moved easily.
There is a small brick foundation behind the HQ’s that has some historical significance to it. The local lore is that hootch was stored there during Prohibition times. Robert Uzzilia will be looking for volunteers to help rebuild the walls that are in poor condition so we can incorporate the brick cellar in our storage building.
  2. Cairo Depot – no update.
  3. Hometown Heroes – Sylvia reports that the Hometown Heroes banners are coming down next week.  Robert Hempstead is supplying a bucket truck and men to assist with the process. Ray Houghtaling has agreed to coordinate. John Kargoe is managing the volunteers to assist in the cleaning and packing of the banners.
  4. Sylvia reports that she and Linda have completed 144 biographies to date; only 106 to go. The writers are struggling to find any kind of military information on quite a few veterans. Sylvia is requesting authority to purchase up to 10 DD214’s from the National Archives (NARA) to assist in the writing process. Mark made the motion that Sylvia be authorized to purchase up to 10 DD214’s from NARA. Sherry seconded the motion and all agreed. The motion was passed.
No additional pre orders for the book have been received.
  5. Cairo Family Tree – Sylvia advised that we have received another leaf donation to the tree – George and Barbara Morrison of Gem Wood Stove have purchased a bronze leaf. Augie Freemann Jr. has begun cutting the animals for the tree.
  6. 2016 Historical Marker – Sylvia advises that the James Barker grant application has been submitted to the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.
  7. Sherry indicated that the CHS table at the Apple Harvest Festival was very busy and she could have used a second person there. Thanks go out to Michael Lamanec who came and relieved her for lunches and to John Kargoe for helping to move the CHS materials. Sales for the two days was $661.24.
  8. Sylvia advised that the County Farm Historical Marker dedication went very well. We had a nice crowd of people there, most of whom came over for the chicken BBQ. We sold 81 tickets and had quite a few chickens left over but they were sold at cost to many people who took them home. Our gross sales for the event was $1628.88 (ticket sales $984.00 plus $644.88 cash donations) less costs of $1038.22. This was the first BBQ we have ever done, and we learned a lot that we can apply to a future BBQ. Many thanks to Sherry True who co-chaired the event and Helen Chadderdon and Ron Hasenkopf who volunteered to help. The Cairo Historical Society would like to formally thank all of its sponsors for the chicken BBQ event: Smokin’ Joe’s BBQ (the chickens were delicious!), Hannaford’s, the National Bank of Coxsackie, Story’s Farms and Murray and True CPA’s.
  9. Sherry advises that all is set for the Jay Ciccone lecture on November 7, 2015 at 1:00pm at the Cairo Public Library. Jay will be speaking on the early Native Americans of Greene County. Tickets are $5 in advance or at the door.

New Business:

  1. John mentioned that we had discussed changing the format of our monthly meetings to include more historical material. A discussion ensued about inviting local people to the monthly meeting to talk about Cairo memories. Neil Schoenfeld suggested that we invite Ralph Di Caprio to the meeting to talk about WW2 and local veterans that he interviewed. This sounds like a great idea. More names were suggested as guests and it was agreed that an effort be made to invite someone every month.
  2. Richie Obach raised the question of the CHS doing more research to locate the exact location of the old Curtis Clock Factory. Robert Uzzilia mentioned that intensive research has already been done and due to the vagueness of the deeds, it was found impossible to establish the location.

Sherry moved to close the meeting at 8:05.  Elton seconded the motion. All agreed and the formal meeting was closed.

Share Session:

  1. Mrs. Dorothy Grupe was our special guest at the meeting and brought along a very interesting scrapbook of her husband’s time in Hawaii in the service during WW2. The Grupe family came from NYC to Cairo in 1916 and was the owners of Clearbrook Farm off Rte 32 at the Woodstock Dam. She also had a picture of her husband as one of the inductees to the war, standing on the steps of the Greene County Court House May 12, 1944, Navy. August F.K. Grupe is the man standing bottom row far left. She also brought in a Clear Brook Farms brochure and a school picture with her husband, August F.K. Grupe, seated third from the left. The year of the picture is unknown.
  2. Sylvia brought in 2 pictures that were posted on Facebook. The first is a Roy’s photo of the 38th Annual Borthwick Family Reunion taken on the steps of the IOOF417 Lodge in Cairo on September 1, 1947. The other is a Coursen Photo taken of the Travis Colonial Homestead by Greene Lake near Leeds. Coursen was Cairo’s own photographer.
  3. Robert Uzzilia brought in an item from the Purling Post Office, its actual use unknown. We decided to post it in the next edition of the Cairo Herald hoping for some ideas.

She advised that Sylvia has agreed to be cross trained in Quickbooks; she prepares the deposits for the bank anyway. Sylvia indicated that Sherry has agreed to be trained also. Jill has agreed to continue to do the remaining Treasurer’s responsibilities.
Jill has indicated that we seem unable to establish a yearly sales tax payment method. She has written two letters already to the Taxation office, who have stated that we need only submit NYS Sales Tax once per year, yet we still receive overdue notices.
Sylvia advised that the property insurance we currently have is for liability only. Jill indicated that Farm Family, the insurance company she works for normally does not offer builder’s risk insurance, but is willing to do so for the Cairo Historical Society. Jill stated that she would not receive any commission on the policy should we decide to take the builder’s risk policy through Farm Family. Farm Family offers a builder’s risk only policy for $305,000 for $1583.00. Grapeville Insurance offered a builder’s risk insurance policy for $200,000 coverage for $2758.00. Gail made a motion that we take the builder’s risk insurance policy through Farm Family, Sylvia seconded the motion. All were in favor and the motion passed. Old Business:

  1. Sylvia indicated she will pursue the steps in Trade marking our Logo in the fall.

We have received Dave Dorpfeld’s forward (Greene County Historian), and are awaiting Chris Gibson’s which is written and is now under review by his Chief of Staff. We need to develop some strategies to pre-sell additional books. It is expected that proofing of the book will begin in January and February.
  4. Sylvia indicated that the CHS has received a letter from the Law Office of Monica M. Kenny-Keff, requesting permission to purchase a second Thomas Webber banner. Thomas Webber passed away in 2015 and Monica and her husband live on a private road called Thomas Webber Rd. and they wish to hang his banner on the road in his honor. The members at the meeting discussed this issue and there was unanimous consensus to approve the request at the prevailing price of the other banners. Sylvia will write the letter to Monica advising of the decision.
  5. Sherry advises that the Native Americans in Greene County lecture went extremely well. We had 67 paying attendees and sold a fair number of items. Revenue for the day was $623.88. Attendees were very enthusiastic and Jay has indicated that he will come back in 2016 for another lecture.
