Originally from Barbados some of the Gaskin family moved to Guyana and from there some came to the US. The father was John Sheaf(or Shafe) Gaskin and was suppose to have had 7 sons and 1 daughter. On 29 July 1880 a Mrs L Gaskin with the 3 youngest children (Lindsay,Ida and Joseph)arrived in New York aboard the Bark Golden Fleece from Georgetown. I have located 2 other children (John and Samuel) in the US and possibly a 6th (Harry). One child Clement remained in Guyana until about 1915 and then went to Canada. This leaves one unaccounted for who I believe was a Edmund Herbert Gaskin. Their father John Sheaf Gaskin Jr died about Sept 1885 per the Argosy British Guyana Death notice confirmation in Argosy British Guyana; No date given but about Sept 1885: Notice as follows Died at Newcastle Street, John's, Barbados, John Shafe Gaskin, age 73, son of the late Hon John Shafe Gaskin, resident of this Island, and member of HM Council, and father of J M Gaskin Esq. I have had difficulties in trying to locate info on any siblings of John Jr but there are some clues that there were some other Gaskin family in Guyana

I am researching for a friend of mine. I have found some information in the US census records. I have also found his Grandfather: Piercy Hubertus Hilliman, in the Ellis Island records. I also have names of Piercy's brothers, one of whom became a US Citizen, so the others could emmigrate. Piercy didn't become a citizen, he married an American citizen. He was a "chef" on a railroad line. He lived in New York, along with many other people from Giana, according to the census reports. I am very excited about this new site. My friend has given me some information on his family, but I wish to confirm it. So, this site, will open up the country of Guyana, for me. Thank you, Cindy Brewer-Dooley for Robert Hilliman Lipscombe

I am trying to find the connection between the Barbados Cholmondeley's and those that are in Guyana. I was told that my grandfather Edward Cholmondeley had family that left Barbados and moved to Guyana. I know that there are plenty of Cholmondeley's in Guyana but I am trying to find out if we are related.

How lovely to have a place on the web that is uniquely for folks searching for records in Guyana. Sadly, since 1999 I have written many letters, and sent many more emails, looking for help in finding some information on my 3rd great grandfather who was born in Demerara, about 1829 - WITH NOT ONE REPLY, until this morning (Sept. 26/05). A kind lady from the Rotary Club in Georgetown has forwarded my email to someone who may assist me. It is not only that the state of the archives are in such dreadful condition it is the fact that NO ONE seems to care. If anyone visiting should happen to see the names in the 'I am researching' I'd be thrilled for a reply. A kind volunteer just one month ago found a reference to this 3rd gr grand father leaving Guyana as a 6 yr old child in 1835. His name in full is George Sydney Meerten(s). Thank you.

Searching for the Hunter family in British Guiana - Sarah Elizabeth born 1843, Henry born 1845 and James born 1847 to Henry Hunter who was a curate - I have no idea of the mother of these children. Henry had returned to England with the children by 1851 and was a widower. Henry born 1845 puts Demerara on the English census as his birthplace.

I have recently started to research my genealogy from Guyana. My mother and father were born in Georgetown, Guyana (British Guiana to them)and emigrated to Canada in the 1940's. My Grandfather's name was Abel Mendonca (on my father's side) and emigrated from the island of Madeira off Portugal in the late 1800's/early 1900's to British Guiana. He came with his wife Olinda Mendonca and his two sister's Lucy Mendonca and Filamina Mendonca and his brother. Abel had three children that were born in Guyana; John Mendonca, Gertrude Mendonca and Bernard Mendonca (my father). My Grandfather on my mother's side was Archibald Rix who emigrated from England to run a balata business in Georgetown, Guyana. He also came to British Guiana in the late 1800's. He married Sarah Outridge from Bartica and they had ten children (one died at birth and one was adopted as a baby); Jean Rix (my mother), Agnes Rix, Sara Rix, Dennis Rix, John Rix, Raymond Rix, Joyce Rix, Roseanne Rix and Margorie Rix. I am working on getting records for my grandfather's and grandmother's, ship list, etc. So far it's been difficult with records from Guyana. No reply as yet. I am awaiting information from Madeira. If anyone out there has any suggestion I would appreciate it very much.

Thank you for creating a very informative site. I am having a difficult time researching my wife's Guyanese/Indian ancestry. This is due not only to the inaccessability of vital records in Guyana but also to a general unwillingness of existing family members to relive or uncover a bitter past. This is most unfortunate. Our children must know from whence they came so that they may form a strong sense of identity - a feeling of who they are. While I may not be able to change the additudes of my elders, is there not something we can do to save the existing records which may offer some bridge to the past? Has anyone asked the Mormon Church for help in this matter? It seems to me that that they are uniquely qualified to microfilm and thus preserve these records.

Following on from an earlier post. I have found out the following information. If anyone can help - any information will do - it is greatly appreciated. My grandparents, Francis Herman Hamlin and Verona Eleena Hamlin (nee Hescott) married in September 1956, Verona was 7 months pregnant and had her first child, Patrick Lennox (known as Lenny), on 5th November 1956. They came to England in 1960. Their children, Patrick Lennox (my dad), Errol and Jacqui came to England 3 years later, in 1963. Mark was born in England. Verona is a native of Barbados & has 1 brother, Cardinal Hescott, and 2 sisters, Leathur Hescott & Merlyn Hescott (unsure of married names). Their parents were Alfonzo & Ruby Hexcott, although it is believed that Ruby died when Verona was 2 years old (could be older or younger. There is also the possibility that she died in childbirth, as we think that there was a 5th child born but died shortly after birth. During childhood, Verona was known at school as Veronica Forde! The father of Francis (known as Herman Hamlin) is Fitzherbert Hamlin who married a dutch woman whose maiden name was Vandergroen (not sure of spelling or first name) Not sure of the link here but Jean Hamlin (DOB: 26th July 1897) came to England in November 1959 by sea - details of departure point are West Indies, Monserrat arrived in Southampton. If anyone knows who this is, that would br great

Major was my mother's father surname. He was the eldest son fom the Mahaicony Majors who married an Adams from Buxton and that's where most of my info is at. I was told that his father took a contract and went to Jamaica to work on St. Ann's Plantation where he fathered another family, but due to serious illness, his son(my g/father) had to go and bring him back to B.G. I spent the summer of '99 in Jamaica trying to find some info as to whether St. Anns('s)Parish could be where the Plantation was originally but was not successful. Lack of time, dates, records were too plentiful but just couldn't connect the dots and recently found out that there was a fire and the archives have been moved from Spanish town to New Kingston...I believe. My G/parents settled in Friendship, ECD and had 6 children(3boys & 3girls)of whom I only got to know 2 very briefly due to growing up in G/Town and leaving to come aboard 35 yrs ago. I hope that there is someone who may be able to shed some light on this family situation.
