CLASSIFICATION: Churchyard.
LOCATION: In the city of Poughkeepsie, on the east side of Jefferson street.
CONDITION: In 1911 entirely neglected, full of rank vegetation and of litter of all sorts. Since 1911 the lot sold and built upon.
INSCRIPTIONS: 99 in number. Copied in May and December, 1911, by J. W. Poucher, M. D., and Miss Helen W. Reynolds. Published in the Poughkeepsie Eagle of May 4, 1912.
REMARKS: In 1806 this land was acquired by the Methodists of Poughkeepsie as a site for a church building. The church was torn down in 1826 but for many years the lot was used as a burial place. Later, it sank into the dirty, disorderly state in which it was in 1911 when the list of inscriptions was made. Between 1911 and 1915 (and as a result of the making of this list) the lot was sold for building purposes, a plot in the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery was purchased, and all stones and remains moved there. A substantial margin of profit remained financially and should form an inducement to other Churches to give proper care to the burial places in their charge.

Note on #30.
My records show that Josie was the son of John C. and Helen M. Chatterton. The relation of the son was found in old newspaper records, which recorded the death. I have mounds of evidence that John C. and Helen M. were married and lived in Poughkeepsie at that time. Dale A Chatterton at [email protected].
