Clinton County was formed in 1788 from Washington County. In 1799, a portion was removed to form Essex County. St Lawrence was formed in 1802 from parts of Clinton, Herkimer and Montgomery. In 1808, Franklin County was formed from part of Clinton County. The county is presently bordered by Franklin County and Essex County in New York, Grand Isle County in Vermont and, on the north, by Quebec. The county seat for Clinton County is Plattsburgh.
This page is part of the USGenWeb Project, modeled after the Kentucky GenWeb Project which was organized by a group of genealogists in March and April 1996. That idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In June 1996, it was decided to expand the project to include all states. We are always looking for people who are willing to help build this site. We can not place GEDCOM's on the page but will consider all other requests. If you would like to contribute your data for use on this site, please contact your Clinton County Coordinator, Fred V Provoncha. If you are interested in sponsoring a county page within New York State, please contact the NY State Coordinator.
