REVOLUTIONARY WAR 1775 - 1833

ANNIS, Jacob b. 1761. d. Nov. 14, 1841 Town of Ellery. Was a soldier in the American army, having enlisted about 1780, serving until the close of the war, as private under Captains Luke Hitchcock, Jesse Hollister, Sylvanus Smith and Col. Joseph Vose, Massachusetts Militia. Was at the battles of White Plains, King Bridge and the surrender of Cornwallis. He enlisted at Newbury, Mass., and applied for pension Apr. 30, 1818, while residing at Lavonia, Ontario County, N.Y., at which time he was 57 years of age. Pension was granted and he was mentioned in the Pension List of 1840, aged 77 and residing in the Town of Ellery. Lewis Cemetery

BABCOCK, Jonathan. b. Dec. 8, 1762 Stonington, Conn. d. May 16, 1842. Enlisted Apr. 1, 1782, while residing at Stephentown, N.Y. Served as private under Captain Pearce and Col. Willet, New York troops. Discharged Dec. 31, 1782, at Fort Plain, N.Y. Granted pension in 1832 while residing at Burlington, Otsego, County, N.Y. He is mentioned in the Pension List of 1840, as residing with Benjamin Parker in the Town of Ellery. Bemus Point Cemetery. Lot 72 G 1 - marble slab

BARNEY, Luther. b. Mar. 4, 1757 Norwich, Conn. d. Sept. 30, 1844 Town of Ellery. At the commencement of the American Revolution, he became a "Minute Man," afterwards serving as private in Captain Jesse Huntington’s Company, Col. Selden’s Reg’t, Connecticut Milita. During the battle of Bunker Hill he was stationed at Roxbury, Mass., and was with the troops of Connecticut formed to reinforce Washington in the vicinity of New York, participating in the battle of Long Island and other engagements. On the expiration of his term of enlistment, after serving two years, he joined the American navy where he remained until the close of the war. While in the navy he and his brother Edwin were taken prisoners. Edwin died of small-pox on the prison ship, but Luther was afterwards exchanged and returned to his father’s home in Norwich. He and his family moved to the Town of Ellery in about 1913. Bemus Point Cemetery. Lot 32 G 3 W end lot - marble slab.

BEMUS, William. b. Feb. 25, 1762 Saratoga County, NY. d. Jan. 2, 1830. He served as private in Capt. Ephriam Woodworth’s Company, under Col. Cornelius Van Veghten’s Reg’t, Albany County, New York Militia. He emigrated to Chautauqua County in 1805. Bemus Point Cemetery. Lot 55E G 2 W end lot - marble slab

BOYD, Joseph Stuart. b. Nov. 5, 1759. d. Mar. 19, 1846 Town of Ellery. enlisted in April, 1780 or 1781, served as private under Captains Clift and Hart and Col. John Durkee, Connecticut Militia. Was at the battle of Yorktown and the surrender of Cornwallis. residence at time of enlistment, Plainfield, Conn. Applied for pension in April 1818. Claim allowed. He is mentioned in the Pension List of 1840 as residing in the Town of Ellery, aged 81 years and residing with Alvin Boyd. Lewis Cemetery

COE, John. b. Sept. 20, 1757 Southbury, Conn. d. Feb. 19, 1846 Ellery, NY. Enlisted in American army at Southbury, Conn., June 1776, served as private in company of Capt. Rogers, Col. Gay’s reg’t. Re-enlisted in Dec. 1776, again in 1777, 1778, 1779, 1780 and in 1781, serving under Captains David Hinman, Curtis and Johnson and Cols. Hinman and Preston, Connecticut Militia. The last six months of his service he was teamster. He applied for pension Feb. 13, 1834, while a resident of Ellery, NY. He is also mentioned in the Pension List of 1840. His first six month’s service in the army was as substitute for his brother Andrew. Captain David Hinman, in whose Company he was attached was his grandfather. 1757-1846. Red Bird Cemetery. FENTON, Jacob. b. 1765 Mansfield, Conn. d. Jan. 21, 1822 Fluvanna, NY. He enlisted in the Continental army at about the age of 15 years and served during the remainder of the was. Was a pensioner. Fluvanna Cemetery

GRIFFITH, Jeremiah. b. Jan. 28, 1758 Norwich, Conn. d. June 10, 1842. He enlisted in the American army in 1775 and served for five months as private in the company of Captain Hezekiah Baldwin, Connecticut Militia. Re-enlisted and served under Capt. Beebe, Connecticut Militia, for six months, and again in 1776 under Capt. Link Hanford and in 1777 was on the northern frontier in the winter campaign in Canada. Again re-enlisted and served in 1778 under Capt. Hamcrack, N.Y. State Militia. At the time of his application for pension, which was granted, he was 68 years old, and it is recorded that he made the trip from Griffith’s Point, Chautauqua County, NY, to Washington, D.C., on horse back. IVES, Enos Jr. b. Apr. 25, 1759 Wallingford, Conn. d. Nov. 1827 while residing in the Town of Ellery. Family records say he was one of the "Minute Men," who responded at the call of Lexington, serving in the Company of Captain John Couch, and that he was at Fort Washington when his captain and many of his company were taken prisoners. Location of grave not known - believed to be in the Town of Ellery.

LOUCKS, Joseph. b. 1754. d. Apr. 20, 1825. No record has been found of him military service, but he was locally known as a Revolutionary soldier. Fluvanna Cemetery

MAPLE, Dea. Josiah. b. May 15, 1762 New London, Conn. d. July 4, 1847 Ellery, NY. It is recorded that he entered the American army at the age of 15 years and served in the Connecticut Militia until the close of the war. Cemetery in East Aurora, NY.

MARTIN, William. b. July 6, 1753 Massachusetts. d. May 30, 1825. The Centennial History of Chautauqua County says he was at the Battle of Bunker Hill, under Arnold and Montgomery in the expedition against Quebec, where he was wounded. In 1780 he was one of the captives of the Indians at Little Falls, taken to Canada as a prisoner. After several months confinement he made his escape. He is mentioned in the pension list of 1818, residing in Chautauqua County, and as having served as private in Massachusetts Militia. Fluvanna Cemetery

PARKER, Benjamin. b. Mar. 8, 1765 Rhode Island. d. Nov. 7, 1842. At the early stage of the Revolution he was too young to enlist but during the latter part of the war he served for three years the Colonial government with an ox-team and cart as a transport. PARKER, Thomas.

PATTERSON, George Jr. b.1756 Pelham, MA. d. Dec. 3, 1825. A veteran of the Revolutionary War. Red Bird Cemetery. The motif found on his sandstone marker, is that of the Grim Reaper (Father Time) holding a scythe (cutting or ending life), braiding a woman’s hair (a mourning custom), who is holding a bible (devotion to one’s faith), an urn (mourning), and a feather (denoting a life without sin).

PICKARD, John. b. May 28, 1760. d. Aug. 30, 1827. Enlisted at or near Johnstown, NY, 1779, and served in the Continental Army under Captains Koch, Ruff and House, and in Col. Jacob Klock’s Reg’t N.Y. State Militia. Was captured by the Indians, on the Mohawk, near Little Falls, and kept a prisoner about two years. Red Bird Cemetery

RHODES, John. b. 1763 Poughkeepsie, NY. d. 1854. Family records say he was a soldier in the American Revolution during 1777 and 1779, under Captains James Gray, Job Wright and Ephriam Woodworth, and was at the battles of Stillwater and Saratoga. New York State records credit him with service in the 7th Regiment, Dutchess County Militia. Fluvanna Cemetery

SCOFIELD, Seely. b. July 22, 1758. d. June 15, 1843. He enlisted in the Continental army at the age of 18 years and served six years and six months. He was a private in the Company of Captain Henry Ten Eyck’s Light Infantry, Second Connecticut Reg’t commanded by Col. Zebulon F. Butler; was also in Capt. Jonathan Whitney’s Company, of Col. Mead’s 9th Connecticut Militia; also served in Webb’s Reg’t under General Wooster, going to the latter’s command after the battle of White Plains. He is mentioned in the Pension List of 1840 as living in the Town of Ellery, and residing with Haran Scofield. Dewittville Cemetery

SMILEY, William. b. May 25, 1753. d. Jan. 1825. He served in Capt. Stanley’s Company, from Farmington, Conn., in Gay’s Reg’t, and, according to War Department records, his name appears in an account dated July 18, 1776, of the time of enlistment and marching of the men of that company to join the Continental Army in New York, which shows he enlisted June 24, marched July 4 and joined the army July 7. ARNOLD, George C. b. Feb. 24, 1844. d. July 27, 1864 in Capt. Joseph Silsby Arnold’s Company. (Joseph was George’s father).

ARNOLD, Capt. Joseph Silsby. b. Oct. 6, 1822 Ellery, NY. d. Mar. 15, 1911 at his home on Fluvanna Ave. Captain of the 112th New York Volunteer Infantry and the Seventh Company, First Battalion, New York Sharpshooters (attached to the 112th New York 112th before the departure of the two organizations for the front and sometimes designated Company L of that regiment). He commanded the sharpshooters. He went to the front in the fall of 1862 and outlived every company commander of the 112th. He enlisted in the Seventh company of sharpshooters Aug. 9, 1862, and was mustered in as captain Sept. 12, 1862, the day of the departure for the front. He was discharged Apr. 29, 1864, on account of disability. Of his record as a soldier the survivors of his company delight to tell, pronouncing him one of the bravest and best officers who ever wore the Union blue. Lake View Cemetery.

BROWN, Capt. Edwin. b. Feb. 12, 1835 Ellery, NY. d. Sept. 5, 1901 Millington, Kendall, IL. Enlisted in Co. E. 91st Illinois Infantry; mustered into army at Springfield, Ill, from which point his regiment was ordered to Kentucky to relieve Louisville and guard railroad bridges. They were captured by the Confederate General, John H. Morgan, in Dec. 1862, but were immediately paroled and sent to Benton Barracks, St. Louis until exchanged July 1, 1863. From thence they were sent down the Mississippi River and assigned to the 13th Corps, under command of Gen. Banks. In the fall of 1863 was ordered to Morganza Bend, Louisiana, where they were met by a small force of confederates and immediately commenced scattering and driving them back through the woods; in this engagement the captain was stricken by sunstroke, being rendered unfit for service, and was soon after honorably discharged. On entering the army Edwin was commissioned first lieutenant and when the company left Kentucky was made captain. Cemetery in Millington, Kendal, Ill.

BROWN, John A. Enlisted August 18, 1863 PVT First Bat’l N.Y.S. Sharpshooters - Ellery. Discharged June 7, 1865 at expiration of service and ferred to 8th Co. May 26, 1865 captured at Todd’s Tavern, Va.,; Re-captured in the field. Captured again Aug. 18, 1864 Yellow Tavern on the Weldon R. R., Va.; Confined in Libby prison on Belle Island; paroled at Rebel Prison, Richmond, Va. Oct, 1864. His later statement "in 41 engagements, under shot and shell with the enemy - never wounded; with the army of the Potomac during all of my service".

CLARK, Major Seth William. b. Feb. 22, 1832 Ellery, NY. d. Dec. 31, 1904 Seattle, Washington. Timeline of military service in Civil War; answered Lincoln’s call for volunteers; Private, Co. C. 9th Reg’t, N.Y. Cavalry - August 31, 1862 wounded at Battle of Chantilla, bullet in right leg. At Battle of Gettsburg. Feb. 2, 1863 Rappanhannock Station, gunshot wound right shoulder; arm in sling; used left hand for saber. Jan. 9, 1863 saber wound on chin to bone and shot by bushwacker. June 11, 1864 Battle of Trevillian Station - wounded - right hip dislocated; wound never healed. Laid on battlefield 5 days; carried to tobacco warehouse in Richmond, VA by the enemy. Fall of 1864 put in Libby prison until fall of 1864. Rations were one piece of cornbread each day. When he left prison he was hardly more than skin and bones. Exchanged to hospital at Annapolis where he remained until the following spring. Corporal; 1st Lieutenant when mustered out. Would have been Captain but when they thought he was dead his promotion was given to another man. Spring of 1865, Governor of N.Y. commissioned him a Major. Stevens in 72 Reg’t at David’s Island, NY harbor on or about May 26, 1864. While on duty he received a gun shot wound - a service ball passed through his right shoulder and upper part of the right lobe of his lungs, at Battle of Gettysburg. This wound left his right arm partially paralyzed and his right lung permanently diseased. He spent some time in Libby Prison and was exchanged for a southern soldier. Buried in Plainview, Tex.

He was wounded in the right shoulder while on duty near Coal Harbor on June 4, 1864. His officer, Capt. Perry Clinton was present at the time and saw the wound. PICKARD, Joshua John. b. Nov. 23, 1812 Madison County, NY. d. Mar. 3, 1887 Hamburg, Livingston County, Mich. John Pickard enlisted by Col. Backus at Ft. Wayne, Mich., on Aug. 28, 1861 and served 3 years in the Civil War being 42 years of age. He served as a Vol. 5th Reg’t Mich Infantry. For some two weeks, his company was compelled to remain most of the time, sleeping on wet ground, facing the storms where he took a very severe cold, which severely affected his lungs and throat so he was unable to speak aloud and taking on additional colds and by exposure and fatigue with his company at Fort Lynn near Alexandria, Va. In the latter part of Oct. 1861 he grew gradually worse until he became entirely unable to perform duty as a soldier. He was discharged at Annapolis, Maryland on Apr. 2, 1862 for disability. Came with his father to Ellery in 1816. Hamburg Village Cemetery.

Mr. Beck was among the 100 area men who became a part of the 46th U.S. Infantry serving in the Spanish American War. The group organized in Boston, Mass. in 1899. He often recalled the trip from Boston to Manila in the Philippine Islands, where the company was under fire within 44 hours. He was then sent north to relieve a detachment, remaining for six weeks, with only ten days rations. The regiment returned to the U.S., May 31, 1901.
