Wednesday Jan 1


In No. 6 Dr. Hurd just opened the door a crack and wished us Happy New Year, but was sick today & did not call. I did not have anything extra for dinner. Sat up some time in the A.M. & eve. Played 2 games of dominos with May in the eve. She won. Did not take a bath.


Thursday Jan. 2


Was dressed in my wrapper & sat up at the table to eat my dinner, the first time I have done either since a week ago last Sat. Dr. Hurd called while I was eating, says I may leave off the chest jackets I have worn nearly 2 weeks. Dance this eve. Ma has gone down.


Friday Jan. 3


Danced last night till after 9. Dr. H. called about 9. Told us about Mr. Barbar the old patient from Fredonia. A.M. spent in Mother Jackson's room to let Salina sweep. Dr. J. came up behind me & gave me a kiss. The first time I was ever there and the first time I have been out of my room since week ago Mon.


Saturday Jan. 4


Mr. Barnes read some of Widow Bedolt to me last night: was carried down to be weighed, the first time I have been down since 2 wks. ago yesterday: have lost 7 1/2 lbs. in 5 wks. P.M. Josephine played dominos with me. Miss Craig called. Eve. Mr. B. reading

Sunday Jan. 5


Dr. Hurd called a few minutes after breakfast: thinks I am doing finely: told Mother she must lie in bed a good deal. Went in Mrs. Barnes room while Salina did our work &. they came here ditto. He read loud. Ma had dinner here. Dr. York brought in Lady of the Lake & read to us a while.


Monday Jan. 6


Put on my short dress: the first time in more than 2 weeks. Wanted to go down to dinner but Mr. H. & Dr. Hurd would not consent. A.M. Played dominos with Mrs. Osgood. No bath. Eve. Had charades in the parlor. Got most mad at Dr. Hurd for not letting me go. he came & caught me crying but soon stopped it.

Tuesday Jan. 7


Dr. Hurd came in to see if I was able to go to the dressing room lecture. I walked over & back with help. Had a sponge bath: After dinner, May, Mrs. Porter & Mr. Bemis called. Rec. a letter from Harriet: Eve. Mrs. Godfrey called & Dr. York read Lady of the Lake.



Wednesday Jan. 8


Finished my breakfast & then went in & helped Mrs. Barnes finish hers. Dr. Hurd came while I was there, seemed glad to see me visiting. Went down to dinner, the first time in nearly 3 wks. Sat at 4th where I sat so long. Enjoyed it much & felt better for it. Was carried down & back.


Thursday Jan. 9


I got along so well going to dinner Mother Hawke had me go to breakfast & dinner both. A.M. Miss Kellin fitted my casque cover. After dinner Mr. Hathaway asked us to sign a paper letting Dr. Hurd know any willingness to have him go to Erie to go to the convention.


Friday Jan. 10


Took breakfast with Mrs. Barnes, had a very pleasant time. Went to the piazza, the first time in 3 weeks. P.M. Mrs. York & May called. May staid in the eve. Eve. Dr York read the Lady of the Lake a very good part.


Saturday Jan. 11


Went down to breakfast & dinner. Drs. Hurd & Jackson were going to talk with us, but did not. Ate some pudding, the first I have tasted since Nov.! P.M. Mr. Craig called, the first time I have seen him since he was hurt. Took my first lesson in card playing, learned to play whist.


Sunday Jan. 12


Read over all of J. C.'s old letters & got them ready to send back by mother. Dr. Hurd gave me a special charge this morning to rest & be careful about my diet today. Eve. Dr. York read to us some time in the Lady of the Lake. I like it very much.


Monday Jan. 13


Walked eight times across the south piazza before breakfast. Dr. Jackson disappointed us again. Had brother Jonathan for dinner. P.M. Had a good visit with Mr. Farley from Flint. Had a dance, ma danced Mr. Tucker.


Tuesday Jan. 14


Went to lecture the first since I was sick. A very good one. Had our talk with Dr. Jackson, shall probably stay until May or June. P.M. Spoke to Dr. Hurd a minute & he came in a little while. Sat by me saying he would sit at the feet of Wisdom. Played whist. Eve. Dr. York finished Lady of the Lake.


Wednesday Jan. 15


Dr. Hurd came & examined me before I was up: gave me some new directions about diet; but no prescriptions till he gets back. Not very well, did not get up till after breakfast. Eve. Had a good bye kiss from each of the Drs.


Thursday Jan. 16


Drs. Jackson, Austin, & Hurd left at 5 A.M. for Erie Co. Kept quiet all day. P.M. Mrs. Downing, wife of the great agriculturist; brought in her leaf work & showed me some. Eve. Had plays in the dining room, went down.


Friday Jan. 17


A.M. Had a little sick spell but got over it before resting hours & lay & looked at the fast-falling snow till I fell asleep. Dr. York came in after resting hrs. & said he never saw me looking so well before. P.M. & Eve. Played whist.


Saturday Jan. 18


Went down to breakfast & staid in the parlor & played a game of whist. P.M. Harriet did not go to the convention so my dress came by express. Eve. Went to the parlor & staid till 8 1/2. Played lawyer; had a very good time.


Sunday Jan. 19


Rec. a letter from J. C. requesting the return of his picture.

Mr. Brewster attended prayers, the first time I have been present in 7 or 8 weeks. After dinner went up to Boston the first time I have been on that floor in 4 wks. Eve. Had a very full & good prayer meeting in the L. D. R. First Ab in 8 months.


Monday Jan. 20


By request; Dr. Walker lectured a very good lecture. Had a bath, the first in a week. Ate too much dinner. Staid down some time after dinner, then had a good visit with Mr. Bemis. Eve. Went to the parlor a little while. The Drs. are expected at 10 tonight.


Tuesday Jan. 21


The Drs. came & brought 4 with them: the Drs. all made very pleasant speeches & we all very glad to see them. 40 took a sleigh ride, 20 at 12 1/2 + 20 after dinner. Had a dance, went down a little while. It has seemed like N. Years all day.


Wednesday Jan. 22


Dr. Hurd attended prayers. Sit in my old seat at the 4th table. A.M. Miss Libben took my dress to make. Had a bath. P.M. Played a game of whist: Eve. Spent with Mrs. Downing: she read us several pieces of her rhyming: enjoyed the eve much.


Thursday Jan. 23


Had a lecture. A.M. Dr. Hurd examined me, read my last letter from J. C. & gave me some first rate advice about that & other things: & a very good prescription. P.M. Played euchre; went to the piazza: Eve. Had a good visit with Miss Fraser: after, went to the parlor & played whist.


Friday Jan. 24


Dressed; went to the piazza; to lecture & breakfast, - played 6 games of Whist; took a nice sleigh ride with Giles; went to the bath room & took my dry rub. P.M. Went to gymnastics, & e. Eve. Went to Boston & 39. Spoke for a place in 39 today. A party went to Shakerville.


Saturday Jan. 25


Dr. Jackson attended prayers. A.M. Played whist; went to the piazza, & took a half-bath; the first one in a long time. P.M. Prof. Porter taught me to play 2 handed whist. Took a little sleigh ride with Mr. Mercerean. Evening went to the parlor, played whist as usual.


Sunday Jan. 26


Dr. Jackson attended prayers. A.M. Spent some time on the south piazza in the sunshine. At 4 1/2 P.M. Rev. Mrs. Jenkins, a Universalist minister preached in the parlor. Text: Ps. 53.20 last clause. Sub. The law of compensation. A very good sermon, indeed. The prayer meeting was postponed for it.


Monday Jan. 27


Miss Fraser, Mr. Zimmerman, Mr. Cahill & one other gent left today. Attended lecture. Miss Grunder has been fixing my clothes. Ma says I raised hob all day. Eve. Spent with Mrs. Landon & Libbie.


Tuesday Jan. 28


Told Mother Hawke my feelings as bad as they really were & she had me lie in bed this A.M. & so I lost a first rate lec. Went down to dinner. Miss Grunder has been here all day. Have just been in Miss Fisher's room a few minutes.


Wednesday Jan. 29


Miss Fisher & a gentleman left today. Moved my things from Boston to 89 to make room for Mrs. Osgood in Boston. Mr. & Mrs. Downing called last eve. he gave me a pear. She called this eve. & gave me a leaf picture. Eve. Emma Francis was here. Not well, had sitz. Dr. Walker's idea.


Thursday Jan. 30


Dr. Hurd called to see how I was. Went to the piazza but not to prayers. Eve. Our Home Artistic Troupe gave an entertainment in the Hall consisting of charades, tableaux, & e. to aid the Dansville Ladies Soldier's Relief society. I went to Boston, not able to go down.



Friday Jan. 31


Rec. a letter from Harriet. Mr. & Mrs. Downing, Miss Cook & Mr. Weller left this morn. Dr. Hurd attended prayers read Romans 12. A.M. Took a little ride with Mr. Bardwell, after Mr. Mercereau's horse. Mr. Gazley spent the eve. here, had several other calls. Bought a pack of cards.


Saturday Feb. 1


Dr. Jackson attended prayers, & thanked us for letting the Drs. have the play spell of the past week. A.M. Played cards, called on May Ginley & took a bath. P.M. Had an early dinner in my room & took a ride with Mrs. Watkins & Dr. Walker, went up Health St. Rec. a letter from H. Eve. Had a little talk with Dr. H. in the hall.


Sunday Feb. 2


Dr. J. attended prayers. A.M. Walked out a little beyond the wood shed, the first time I have been on the ground in nearly 9 wks. Eve. Had a prayer meeting in the dining room: very good. Prof. Porter led the meeting. helped me upstairs & gave me a kiss.


Monday Feb. 3


Mr. Hathaway left this morn. Went to lecture, but was faint & had to come out, ate breakfast in my room but went down to dinner. After dinner moved into 39. Mrs. Johnson rooms here. Have been in No. 6 just 6 weeks.


Tuesday Feb. 4


Was not at prayers but went down to breakfast. Was faint & was brought upstairs. was very faint & then cramped; sent for Dr. Hurd & had quite a time: lay in bed all the A.M.: had dinner in my room. Eve. Mr. Gazley was here; after he was gone, played whist with Mrs. Johnson.


Wednesday Feb. 5


Mr. Gazley left this morn. Have staid in my room all day & lain a bed most of this time. They got up a sleigh ride this P.M.: Ma went; they went all through the paper mill. Dr. York is the only Dr. that has called today.


Thursday Feb. 6


Mr. Brown left this morn. Dr. Hurd called after breakfast; I was naughty & he looked sad, had a little cry after he left & have felt better ever since. Had a bath. P.M. Took a short ride with Mr. & Mrs. Joy. Put on my short dress this P.M. & was clothed & in my right mind.


Friday Feb. 7


Mr. Egerton left this morn. Went down to lecture but not to breakfast. My new dress has come, tried it on & Mother Jackson & Giles came up to see it. P.M. Miss Gibby came. put it on for her to see, went in & let Dr. Hurd criticize it: had a good little visit. Eve. Menagerie in the parlor, very good.


Saturday Feb. 8


Dr. Hurd examined me this morn before I was up: is going to give me a new prescription. Mr. Jenkins, Mr. Johnson, the Boston ladies & 39 ladies had an invitation to spend the eve. with Dr. Hurd & Miss Austin: had a very pleasant time.


Sunday Feb. 9


My last evening's visit was rather too hard for me; have not felt as well this A.M. Ate dinner in Boston with Mrs. Osgood. P.M. Have felt some better; Mr. Bacon called. Went to prayer meeting; Dr. Hurd led: got very tired & nervous, was carried down & back.


Monday Feb. 10


Felt quite sick a while before I got up. Dr. Hurd called this morn to see me & this P.M. to see Mrs. Johnson. He told me to "keep up good courage." Eve. Went in Boston a few minutes but got very tired. Miss Anna Francis is sick with a cold, staid in here tonight.


Tuesday Feb. 11


Have not felt at all well today. A.M. Rachel wheeled me in the piazza. Mrs Brewster called this A.M. to bring Anna a book. We both sat in my bed to eat dinner & have lain in bed all the P.M. Dance this eve but can't go.


Wednesday Feb. 12


Learned to play Solitaire. Took a bath on my new prescription. Dr. Hurd called a moment while we were eating dinner. Eve. Mrs. York, Dr. Hurd, Dr. Walker, Mr. Brewster, Mother Hawke, & e. called. Had too have fom. for a severe pain.


Thursday Feb. 13


Took home the Ind. but did not get another. Went to the lecture but got very tired. Mother sent a letter & paper to Harriet. Anna & I had a good time eating breakfast & dinner. Learned to play broken merchant. Eve. Dr. Walker brought in the new book about Walkers. Read Mrs. Fisher's letter.


Friday Feb. 14


Did not go to lecture: ate breakfast in Boston all alone. Had a bath again. Called on Mrs. York a few min. this morn. Ate dinner in Boston. Did not sleep any at resting hours & have been "as nervous as a witch" all the P.M.


Saturday Feb. 15


Mrs. Godfrey ate breakfast with me this morn. Mrs. Johnson gave me a copy of "Freedom's Battle Hymn" by J.G. Clark. Took a bath. Ate dinner in Boston. Rec. a valentine. Have not felt well. Eve Had a little talk with Dr. Hurd in the office.


Sunday Feb. 16


Ate breakfast in Boston with Mrs. Osgood. A.M. Had a visit with May on my bed. Have been on the bed most of the day. Went down to dinner, ate too much & too much variety, have been spitting it up. Followed my judgement instead of inclination & did not go to the prayer meeting.


Monday Feb. 17


Went to lecture but came up to breakfast. Mrs. Godfrey ate with me. Felt quite well, went into Boston a few minutes & felt so bad Mother Hawke helped me home.


Tuesday Feb. 18


Mr. & Mrs. Barnes, Selina Blake, Mr. Devine, & Mother Warren left this P.M. Went to bed for resting hours feeling quite sick & did not get up until after dinner, then played dominos with Mr. Bacon. Dance this eve: staid alone most of the evening.


Wednesday Feb. 19


Two years today since I first wore the Reform Dress to church, have worn a long dress but once since. Joe went to church with me: two years ago tonight J.C. first asked me to ride with him. Have felt quite weak & sick all day. Mrs. Godfrey & Mrs. Noyes ate breakfast here.


Thursday Feb. 20


Mr. Huntsbury died last night, funeral in the parlor this P.M. Was not able to go. Dr. Hurd was in a minute this morn. was coming again but did not. Mrs. Latimer staid here last night & is here yet.


Friday Feb. 21


Was quite nervous all day, just enough so to laugh heartily at every little thing. Mr. Reed called after breakfast to see Mrs. Latimer. He told her "he thought the bad blood was coming out." He thinks she will feel better when it is all out.


Saturday Feb. 22


Did not go down to be weighed. There was a sleigh ride before dinner. Mother, Dr. Hurd, Miss Austin, Mother Hawke, & c. Rec. a letter & some papers from H. this P.M. She is quite blue about me. Eve. Had a little meeting in the parlor for Washington's birthday. Did not go.


Sunday Feb. 23


Have been quite weak all day: have not sat up but little, been somewhat blue. Miss Austin led the prayer meeting. I was not able to go but heard they had a good meeting. Mr. Bemis was here.


Monday Feb. 24


Dr. Hurd lectured, went down but was only able to stay a few minutes. A.M. James G. Clark called to see me. staid sometime, told a story, sung a song & e. P.M. Played backgammon, Mrs. Simmons, Dr. Hurd & some others called.


Tuesday Feb. 25


Dr. Hurd lectured in the dressing room. He brought me upstairs after it. Dr. J. came today. A.M. Took a ride with Mr. Mercereau's horse. Mr. Hazard drove, went up Health St. P.M. Mr. Bacon brought in a letter from cousin Loogan Holt. Eve. Had a dance, the first time I have been lately.


Wednesday Feb. 26


Mr. Dodds left this morning. Went to lecture but came up to breakfast. A.M. Took a little ride with Mr. Pierson, Mr. Mercereau's horse. Answered J.C.'s note of Jan 12th. Commenced a neck tie for Dr. H. P.M. Mr. Hazard read one of the Bigelow papers.

Thursday Feb. 27


Gave invitations, fixed my dress & c. P.M. Took a little ride with Dr. Walker. Eve. Present. Drs. Hurd, Austin, Walker, York & wife, Boston ladies, & e. 19 in all. Cards, dominos, backgammon, mail call serenades & e.


Friday Feb. 28


Hattie Meeker left today. Feel somewhat tired but am not sick. Did not go to lecture. Took a bath. P.M. Had several calls: was playing a game of backgammon when Dr. Walker brought in 3 ladies to see the patients in their rooms. Mr. Hazard & Miss Eames were here; lively time.


Saturday Mar. 1


Have had 5 baths in 3 wks. Went to be examined but grew so faint while I was waiting that I had to lie down on Dr. Hurd's bed. He exam. me & I lay there till he went down to prayers: same prescription. Have not felt well. Dr. H. gave me a kiss at the stairs.


Sunday Mar. 2


Lay abed most of the day so as to feel able to go to prayer meeting. Sat on the piazza a little while this A.M. Mr. Bemis & Mr. Pond carried me down. Mr. Brewster led, Dr. Hurd prayed & talked, & e. Did not stay through: Mr. Linkletter brought me up.


Monday Mar. 3


Sarah Boyce, Miss Hobson, Mrs. York, Mr. Linkletter & Prof. Porter left. Change of time & E.R.C.. lecture. 6 1/2 . breakfast. 7. & e. Ate breakfast with Miss Eames, ate hers & she mine. Commenced taking treatment again. Went down to dinner. Dr. Hurd carried me down; sit by Dr. Walker. P.M. Dr. W. read to me. Mrs. Pierce moved in & Mrs. Latimer out.


Tuesday Mar. 4


May's brother Rob came this morning. Did not go to lecture but heard much about it: more new arrangements today. A.M. Went to Boston a little while: took a bath. Went down to dinner. Mr. Folsom left. Eve. Rob & May came in., taught him to play backgammon. My stomach is bad today.


Wednesday Mar. 5


Dr. Hurd called after breakfast. No bath. Rob & May were here a while. Sent five Laws to Fre-ministers. Went down to dinner, sit at the 4th t. next Mrs. Brewster. After dinner went to the kitchen & bakery with R. & M. the first time. P.M. They were here, played backgammon.


Thursday Mar. 6


Went down to breakfast, the first time in more than 4 weeks: got too tired & have felt bad all day. Miss Eames ate dinner with me. Had a dance but was not able to go. Mrs. Porter spent the P.M. & eve here. Had a good visit about me, Granville, cousin Willie, Mrs. Logruin's family, prejudice against color.


Friday Mar. 7


Have been sick & lain in bed all day. Mother Hawke has been sick 2 or 3 days & now Dr. Walker is going. Drs. Hurd & York have to do all. Dr. Hurd called this A.M. & tonight. Rec. a note from Harriet. Eve. Dr. Walker read his poem, The Web of Life, in the parlor. Was alone in the dark all evening.


Saturday Mar. 8


Was quite sick this A.M. but got a good sleep at resting hours, &

have felt much better this P.M. Miss Elberta Landon & Mr. & Mrs. Landon left. Eve. Mr. Hazard presented in behalf of patients & friends, a testimonial & dictionary to Dr. Walker. Dr. Replied . Dr. J. spoke, sung Glory Hallelujah.


Sunday Mar. 9


Felt quite sick a while this A.M. Dr. Hurd came in P.M. & I told him I was nervous & cross & ugly. Said he was glad of it & I would feel better tomorrow. Eve. Went to prayer meeting: Mr. Brewster, Dr. Walker, & Dr. Hurd told their experience. Miss Campbel led. Dr. Hurd brought me upstairs.


Monday Mar. 10


Felt better. Miss Eames was here this A.M. a while & I there. She left this P.M. Went down to dinner. Eve. Dr. Hurd & Miss Austin gave a dance in honor of Prof & Mrs. Ross. They danced till 9 O.C. Miss Clark & Mrs. Godfrey were here before I went down. Dr. Walker came & kissed us good bye.


Tuesday Mar. 11

Dr. Walker & Mr. Hazard left. Went down to breakfast. Mother told me this A.M. that the Drs. had decided to have me go home: it is a great disappointment & so sudden. Took dinner in my room & spent most of the P.M. & eve in talking with friends. Took a little ride with Dr. York.


Wednesday Mar. 12


Mrs. Pierce went home & the new Mrs. Johnson moved in. Went down to dinner. Prof. & Mrs. Ross left: Staid in the parlor a little while after dinner. Sit at 60 4th ta. P.M. Had a good many calls. Eve. May & I went in 30 & visited all the eve. had the best visit we ever did, know her better than ever.


Thursday Mar. 13


Mrs. Brewster & Wadsy left. Dr. Hurd told Mother this morn I could have anything I wished to eat while I stay. Went down to dinner, staid in the parlor a while, played whist, then went to the 4th floors, made several calls, got very tired, spent the eve resting. Dr. Hurd hurt his foot in the bathroom.


Friday Mar. 14


After breakfast went to see Gent's bath rooms: made some calls & went to exercises a few min. At resting hours, Rachel curled my hair, dressed in Miss Landon's room, went to see Dr. H. Half a minute. rec. a letter from H. gave Dr. H.'s necktie to him, had some photographs & an ambrotype taken.


Saturday Mar. 15


Dr. H. lectured. Ate breakfast in S.D. Staid in the parlor a while after breakfast. Came up a while & then called on Mrs. Thayer & e. After dinner called on Mother Hawke, Dr. Hurd called here, called on Mrs. Simmons . Eve. Miss Davis, Miss Tallon & Miss Dickinson sung. After, Dr. Hurd had us play button.


Sunday Mar. 16


Did not go down to breakfast, Mr. & Mrs. Johnson ate with me. Miss Austin came to see me & I went to her room, had a good little talk, she gave me a child's prayer. About noon went to 22 with Dr. Hurd, lay on his bed while we talked. P.M. Lay in bed. Eve. Went to prayer meeting.


Monday Mar. 17


Dr. Hurd lectured, was present. Had a nice half bath. Dr. Jackson, Mr. Brewster & Mr. Linkletter came back. After dinner my photograph came, all met in the parlor. Dr. J. talked & had a very good time, wrote a note to him requesting to see him. Eve. Mr. McHardy examined my head.


Tuesday Mar. 18


Dr. J. attended prayers. I sat by Dr. Hurd: after breakfast: went to see Dr. Jackson; then down to the parlor a while. Soon after dinner went upstairs & lay a bed to rest & had a good deal of company. Annie & I watched the sunset. Eve. Went to the dance a while, Dr. H. was not there, said my good bye & went to bed.


Wednesday Mar. 19


Was waked at 4 1/2 o.c. Said good bye to Dr. York, Dr. Hurd, Rachel & e. Started at 6, left Wayland at 7:45: reached Buffalo at 12.30 left at 4. got to Dunkirk at 6 & home at 8 P.M. Came with Mr. Chapman to Buffalo. Had a beautiful day. Was in bed before 9 o.c.


Thursday Mar. 20


Have felt much better than I expected to . Had rather a late breakfast. Dec Hamilton came & we had a good visit: Wrote to May, announcing our safe arrival. Took resting hours as usual played solitaire. Hunt’s Mary came up this eve.


Friday Mar. 21


Walked to the gate & back twice before breakfast. Unpacked some this A.M. Went to bed & had a nice rest. Mrs. Todd & Hattie came before dinner. After dinner Flora Clothier & Laurie Wheelock called. Have had a great deal of talking, have talked till my throat is tired.


Saturday Mar. 22


Walked to Mr. Collin's gate this morn. Dec Hamilton called this A.M. Mr. Harris this P.M. & Mr. McLenathan this eve. Unpacked some & took a sponge bath this A.M. Harriet rode down with Mr. Harris to attend church but as there was none she came back with him.


Sunday Mar. 23


Mrs. Hamilton is 56 yrs. old today. Walked twice. Dea Hamilton called at resting hours; I took a nap while she was talking Mary & Stanley came before dinner, he ate dinner with us. P.M. & eve spent in reading, talking & e. Have felt some homesick.


Monday Mar. 24


Felt rather tired & lay in bed until 10 O.C. Mrs. Hubbard called this A.M. to talk about "Our Home," is thinking of going there. Harriet brought up the monthly rose today. I have been teaching her to play whist. Miss Norton called this evening, the first time since we came home.


Tuesday Mar. 25


Sat in the sunshine a while this A.M., enjoyed it much. Rec. a Baptist from May. she rec. my letter. P.M. Mrs. Downie, Mrs. Frazier, Jane Colburn, & Miss Osburn called. Have "lived slow, taken life easy & kept up good courage:" & whistled Yankee Doodle.

Hattie & I lay in bed until after breakfast, then dressed & walked over to Miss Norton's, the first call I have made since I came home. The third pleasant day. Rec. a letter from Mr. Bemis, Mrs. Bartlett, & Annie all in one. Began my answer. Mr. Harris was here to dinner. Harriet has been down to Mr. Hamilton's tonight: I am very tired tonight.

A.M. finished writing to the Boston Ladies & wrote a note to Mr. Bemis. Mr. Hamilton came up about 1 O.C. to fix the curtains. He & Almond were here to dinner. Went to Mr. Pugham's & staid an hour or two, Channie had quite an idea of getting acquainted.

Harriet is 29 yrs old today: she has been at Mr. Hamilton's most of the day. A.M. Fussed around & mended a little & took a sponge bath. P.M. Mary & Hattie Safford & Lettie Muir, Clara Ross & Eva Burnham called. Read the last chapter of the "Pearl of Ores."

Walked to Miss Norton's & Mr. Bond's line fence. Think I had a little touch of hysteria after breakfast, thou ma & Harriet did not mistrust it, "willed" it off in a little while. H. went to church + Y.T. Had a nice sleep. P.M. H. & I walked to Mr. Bond's gate, stopped at Mr. Collis's when we came back. Has been no one here all day.

Ten months today since we reached Our Home. A.M. Finished making a cone leaf rosette. Mrs. Todd has been here most of the day, Mr. Collis moved away. H. has been at Mr. Hamilton's, he brought home the sewing machine this P.M. Have been putting the photographs in my book.

Ate breakfast in bed & dinner at the table, have been very comfortable by keeping quiet. A.M. Mr. Cook brought the melodion, have it in my room, have not forgotten all I know about playing. P.M. Mr. Hamilton was here a while. Have read loud some..


Wednesday Apr. 2


Mother is about sick with a cold, did not get up till 2 O.C. Mr. Hamilton has been fixing about the well. Emma Star called a few minutes just dusk. The new Laws came. Wrote a note to go in Hattie's letter to Mr. Bemis. The wind has been severe all day & as Eld. Downie was gone she came here & spent the evening.

I did not get up till after breakfast & Mother till after noon. Emily Morgan made quite a long call this P.M. This eve Eva Steele came to see if Hattie was going to prayer meeting & as she was not going she staid a while, pleasant visit.

Aunt Moore was here some time this A.M. Have put on a flannel outside throat bandage. 2. P.M. Mr. Walker of Sinclairville called says Eld Husted is going to leave the first of May. Mr. Hamilton was here a while just night; played & sang "Armies on" & e.


Saturday Apr. 5


Finished putting the photographs in my autograph book this A.M. Harriet planted some tomatoes in boxes. Mr. Hamilton came while I was asleep to bring a foot stool he had made. I hung Joe's picture in my room yesterday. Took a sponge bath this eve, first bath this week.


Sunday Apr. 6


Harriet & I went all around the garden A.M., the first time since I came home. Ma went to P.M. meeting. P.M. Went up to H.'s room & got my prescriptions, "Home" letters, & e. H. & I lay on my bed together at resting hours & this P.M.


Monday Apr. 7


Mr. Hamilton & another man were here, cleaned the well. Put some cones up over Joe's picture. Have had the head ache two or three days, this P.M. quite severe & felt sick all over. Took a foot bath this evening & felt quite relieved.


Tuesday Apr. 8


My headache is all gone this morning. A.M. Wrote to Mr. Prusia about my photographs. Mr. Hamilton came & was here to dinner & then pumped the water out of the well, it is good. Just dusk, Eld Downey called, enjoyed the call very much. After he went Aunt Mary & her sister Bridget called.

Mother went downtown this A.M. & staid all day. Harriet gave me a sitz bath, went to sleep after it, Mr. & Mrs. Couvis called & brought our new mill. Aunt Moore came after dinner, staid a little while. Ma bought a new lamp.

A beautiful morning, took a nice walk. A.M. Wrote quite a long letter to Dr. Hurd. Went over to Ida's a few minutes. Mrs. Moir & Amelia Morgan called just before dinner. Ma & Harriet sowed some peas this P.M. I took a walk to Moss's line fence.


Friday Apr. 11


Walked too far yesterday & am lame all over & nearly sick. Sat in the sun most of the A.M. Put Earnest's picture in my room. Mr. Gifford was here to dinner & then gave me a little ride, the first since I came home. When I came back Mr. Tarr & Alice Wilcox were here.

A.M. Aunt Moore & Stanley, Mrs. Patterson & Frankie Leake were here. Aunt brought us one of her pictures. P.M. Flora Hinman, Mrs. Leake & Sarah Clark called. Mrs. Downie called a min. in rest hrs. Harriet has been sick. I have made a new scarf to wear over throat bandage.

Mother went to church & S.S. Harriet gathered some flowers & I made the first boquet of the season. While she was after the flowers she got a letter from Mr. Bemis to us both. P.M. She & I called at Miss Norton's. Eve. Took a sponge bath.

Got the mill going & cracked some wheat. Had a good sleep at resting hours. P.M. Harriet & I called at Eld Downey's: he was not at home, we sat in the study, had a very pleasant call. Played on the melodion a long time just dusk.

A.M. Called at Mrs. Hinman's, Mr Hamilton has been here. did some work in the garden: he told me about the temperance meeting last night. Have made some mince.

J. Hamilton, Jr. called, gave me a kiss, he makes an assignment today. Took a bath. P.M. Mrs. Downie called & brought me some wild flowers. Kittie & Nellie brought me a letter from Mr. Prussia with some photographs. eve. Aunt was here.

Felt rather tired & wore my wrapper this A.M. Had my straw bed filled. Fixed my black straw hat a little. P.M. Commenced me a net; called at Mrs. Walker's a while, came home in the rain, the first we have had in some time.

Mr. Newman worked in the garden. Mr. & Mrs. Hamilton spent the day here, gave me a ride when they came. Had Fidelia's cherries & uncle Aaron's honey. Played & sung Sabbath Holy. Minnie came when they came for them.

Minnie Hamilton came after some flowers & Georgie gave me a little ride while he was waiting. Took a bath. P.M. Kitt & Alice Wilcox & Miss Bennet made a long call. Mrs. Downey called. Have read a good deal.

Mrs. Ingham is taken quite sick & I went over there 3 times this morning. Mother went to church. P.M. Harriet & I took a walk. Have read some, played on the melodion some. Rec. 2 papers from May last night saying she goes tomorrow.

Rigged up in "Home" style & took a nice walk in the rain. After breakfast, sorted the Laws got very tired & lay down & took a nap before resting hours. P.M. Read, crocheted & played.


Tuesday Apr. 22


A.M. Sat in the wash room a while & saw Harriet wash. Minerva Baldwin called. Have been practicing some of the exercises I played when I took lessons. Have looked & looked for a letter from Dr. Hurd but no mail.


Wednesday Apr. 23


Mr. Hamilton brought up the trellises for the rose & honeysuckle & set them. We have had a little snow & much cold. Mended a buckskin glove a little & tired my arm so that I could not play or crochet. Aunt Moore came as we were about to go to bed & made quite a visit. Feel about sick.


Thursday Apr. 24


Feel better than last night but lay in bed till 10 O.C. then walked as far as M. Stanley's. Took a bath & a good sleep. P.M. H. & I went to Mrs. Moir's, her sister was there. Mrs. Liunalt spent the P.M.


Friday Apr. 25


After breakfast got Mr. Ingham's horse & he & I rode, stopped in front of the store, Mr. Wilcox's & Mrs. Frazier's & called at Mr. Hamilton. During resting hours rec. a dear little letter from Dr. Hurd. P.M. Called at Eld. Downey's, Lucy Birnham came & staid all night.

Worked in the garden a little, the first this year. Took a bath. Stanley has been here most of the day. Charlotte & Mary Butterfield came while we were eating dinner. Mother was down town all the P.M. After she came home we called at Mr. McLenathan's. She seemed surprised that I looked at all matured.

Mother & Harriet went to church & left me alone. Walked up to Prospect St. sat down & rested & sung "Sabbath Holy." Aunt Moore came before dinner & Mr. Hamilton after. Aunt goes west tomorrow, sent a photograph to Cousin Martha. J.C. was at church but did not call.

After breakfast carried Mrs. Bowe the Mar. Laws. Fixed some photographs to send "Home". Ma went down town, Aunt Moore started for the West. Spent most of the P.M. at Mr. Wallers, nearly learned to play Happy Land on the accordion.

Have had a man working in the garden all day. Ripped a sheet in two ready to turn. Mrs. Ingham came in just before dinner & ate the first time she has been in since she was sick. Ida brought us some maple molasses & gave me some Adder Tongues.

rec. the May Laws. Had some cold ate water gruel & a piece of cracker for breakfast, lay in bed till 10 O.C. Mrs. Todd called. Mr. Hamilton came & gave me a ride & then took to his house, brought me home just night. The Morgan girls called & staid till 9 O.C.

Went to Mr. Inghams a few minutes this A.M. Fixed some chick weed & flowers in a saucer. Took a bath. Sewed up a sheet on the machine before dinner, the first I have sewed on the machine since I came home.

Walked to Mr. Mosses little gate, farther than I have before. Have been a little sick today, have sat on the bed & written to Dr. Hurd, Mrs. Godfrey & Mr. Brewster to send with photographs. Hattie invented a 3 hand game of broken merchant.

A.M. Wrote to Annie Bartlett & Mother Hawke & sent the letters I wrote yesterday & today to Mother Hawke. Rec. 2 Bapts., May has gone home & Annie is sick. Rec. my diagnosis from Dr. Hurd.

Mr. Hamilton opened his S.S. at Laona today. Sat in the stoop in the sun a while this A.M. Ida brought me some bloodroot flowers. Harriet went to church & staid at Mr. Hamiltons till night. Played on the melodion considerable.


Monday May 5


Almond & Charlie Hamilton ran away & came up here & their mother came after them. While we were eating dinner, Alice Wilcox & Miss Bennet came, had a game of cards. Crocheted enough on my net so I can wear it tomorrow.


Tuesday May 6


Mr. Harris sent for us this morning & brought us back tonight. Ate three meals, first time since I went to "Our Home". A pleasant day & we had a fine time. Saw the hens, chickens, turkeys, calves, rabbit + e.

Pleasant. Rather tired today. Took a bath. Mrs. Coolie & Mattie called a few minutes this A.M. P.M. H. & I called at Mrs. Downey's, Mr. Hughes, & Mr. Greens. Took the new Laws to Mrs. Downey.

Pleasant but the cold lake wind keeps me in the house more than I should be at "Our Home". Called at Miss Norton's before dinner. After dinner went to Mr. Tuttles, staid till dark, played dominoes, the first time since I came home.

Pleasant. Walked to this side of Mr. Morgans lot before breakfast. Sat on the boards in the sun this A.M. Have turned a sheet today. Miss Norton was here to dinner. Ida brought me a boquet & some wildflower roots.

Pleasant. Walked nearly to Pats. A.M. Sat out & mended a pair of stockings, then made a boquet & carried to Mrs. Downey. I sugared off with sugar from Uncle Aaron's. P.M. Made quite a long call at Mr. Morgans. Rhoda Thompson was there.

Went to Frankie's grave before breakfast, the first time I have been in the graveyard in about a year. Made 2 boquets. While Ma & H. were gone to church, sat outdoors & wrote to Mr. Bemis. Mr. Hamilton came while we were eating, had a first-rate visit. He sang a hymn.

Pleasant. Harriet has been quite sick & took a bath; I had to watch Mr. Newman's work all the A.M., got very tired. Had a sore throat this morning & this P.M. it has grown much worse. Had fom. & foot bath this evening.

A beautiful rain. Throat rather worse than better; had fom. this morn & wore large compress this A.M. Quite sick this A.M. but better this P.M. Eve. Had fom. Mother got Gold foil of Mrs. Downey: she sent me some asparagus.

Pleasant. Feel about well but rather weak. Dressed after breakfast & went outdoors a while. Took a bath. P.M. Rather lame but went to Mr. Ingham's a while, came home very tired & took cold; have neuralgia considerable tonight.

Have considerable cold. Ate one cracker for breakfast & a cracker & sauce for dinner, & have lain in bed. Rec. a good full letter from May this noon. Capt. Barrett was buried at Dunkirk with military honors.

Pleasant. My cold is nearly gone, dressed me after breakfast & spent most of the A.M. outdoors. Harriet was planting flower seeds. P.M. Alice Wilcox & Miss Bennet were here a while. played whist. & e.

Have had several showers today, one quite severe. A.M. Wrote some more to May. Mrs. Waller came in while we were eating, the first time since we came home, staid till most night. Have been writing to May & learning to play Star Spangled Banner.

"Just nineteen year old" as Mr. Clark sings. Tom Thumb is in town. Tried to get a horse & take a ride but did not succeed. A.M. Finished & sent my letter to May. Had a birthday dinner. P.M. Went to Mr. Downey's, had a very pleasant time.

Yes, Mrs. D. gave me a boquet, ma & H. called at Mr. Lake's & Mrs. Coolie's. Rode with Mrs. Mc Lenathan to the halfway house & through Risley St. P.M. Went to Mrs. Green's a while, she was not at home. Partly made a head cap. Made 2 boquets before rode.

Got rather tired yesterday. Had a frost last night. A.M. Rode with Mrs. McL. & Mrs. Hinman, went to Webster St. I drove, had a very pleasant time. P.M. Made a boquet for Hattie to carry to Mrs. Hamilton. Finished up my head cap.

Walked to Pats before breakfast. A.M. Wrote a little to Mrs. Godfrey. Stopped at Miss Norton's when I came back from my walk. Mrs. Bowe has gone to Utica. P.M. Read, crocheted & e. Ma went down town & got us some white straw hats.

Got the horse, stopped at the store, then called at Mr. Cato's, took him J.C.'s book & rec. my picture. Got some "old man". Called at Dea. Webster's, & Mr. Todd's. Mrs. Green moved away. P.M. Ripped the trimming off our hats.

Pleasant. A.M. Went to Mrs. McL.'s a little while, then finished Hattie's net & e. Did not rest much at resting hours. Sat out a while before dinner, composing a letter to Dr. Hurd. Ma took down our hats & trimming but did not get them trimmed.

Stopped at the store & was weighed, have gained 4 lbs.: then went to Uncle Levi's, all got out going up the hill & picked flowers. They live on the Phelps farm. Ma & H. ate dinner. I did not. P.M. Mrs. Waller was here. Made some boquets.

Cloudy & rainy. One year today since I have tasted tea or coffee. Mother & Harriet went to church. I made a fire & got dinner all on the table before they came home, & pulled a pan of lettuce. Walked to the locust tree just this side of Mr. Wheelocks.

Rainy. Not very smart, & lay in bed till after noon. Hattie worked. P.M. Received a letter from my dear brother & the Laws: the first we have heard from him in more than 11 months: he is well & has been, is doing well.

Rainy. A.M. Finished mending a pair of stockings. Miss Norton came during resting hours & staid till after dinner: read her Mrs. Smith's & Mrs. Berry's case. Varnished my cone rosette & leaf picture.

Mrs. Newman is helping mother clean house. Have been trying to be lazy. Rec. a good long letter from Mr. Bemis. Annie & many others have gone home. Mr. Harris called, little Mary has had Diphtheria. Have varnished some.

Ate breakfast in bed, then dressed & went down with Mrs. McLenathan & then with mother. Got me a looking glass. Mrs. Jewel called with her reform dress on: Mr. Haynes called. Carleton Caple & Eliza Rowe were married.

A.M. Went down town with ma & Mr. McLenathan's horse, got the stove, saw a Mr. Wily that wants a Dress Reform tract. P.M. Sewed a little, went upstairs, up gerret & e. Very pleasant & warm.

Went down town with Mrs. Ingham to drive. Hattie is not very well. Gave Miss Norton a boquet. Mrs. Gifford came & we had a first rate visit. Sent Bye a boquet. She has thought I was going to die & is so glad I am going to get well.

Took a walk & went to Mr. Waller's after the milk. Rode to their church with them: Eld. Payne preached. Edgar W. & Amelia Chapin were baptized. The first time I have been to church in over a year. R.M.W. called.

Worked in the garden till breakfast. Ripped up my French calico pants & partly cut the linings. Mr. Gifford brought us a ball of butter & Harriet went home with him to stay a day or two.

Pleasant. Worked in the garden till breakfast. A.M. Finished cutting my pants linings. Mrs. Todd came. P.M. Tucked a skirt, called at Mr. Smith's, Mr. Wheelock's, & Eld. Downey's. No one at home. Also & Mr. Newman's & Miss Norton's.

Mrs. Newman came this morning to help us. Cleared out the parlor, took up the carpet & cleaned the parlor. I helped a little, sewed some, took a nice walk & was very tired at night. Some sunshine & a nice shower.

A.M. Pleasant. P.M. Raining. Did considerable weeding & some varnishing. Took a sitz. Had a tapioca pudding & our first strawberries for dinner. P.M. Sewed some scarves, took a walk, it rained a little.

Weeded before breakfast & an hour after. Cleared out my trunk that has stood since we came home. P.M. Went to see Flora Hinman, think she has Diphtheria, fomented her throat, it relieved her.

Flora is better. Got Mr. McL.'s horse, Mrs. Todd not at home, hats not trimmed, grates not done. Called at Aunt's the first time in over a year. Julia came as we came away. She called to see me. Got Miss Austin's picture. Ella Carey is dead. Dip.

Harriet came home last night. Went to see Flora, Dr. Whitford came while there, told him of Mr. & Mrs. Berry. Rec. a letter from Aunt Moore. Went to Mr. McLenathan's to read it to them, staid some.

Mr. Henry white washed the house. Finished fixing my brown calico pants. Mrs. Todd was here twice. Took the Laws to Mrs. Downey. Cleaned Earnest's picture & hung it in the parlor; just night made a nice boquet.

Pleasant. Picked 2 or 3 qts. of currants. Took a bath & a good sleep. Had a strawberry shortcake for dinner. Mrs. Coolie came & helped us eat them. Ripped off the facing & basted the hem to a dress.

Pleasant: morn weeded. A.M. Finished writing to Joe. Hattie got our hats. Hemmed a dress skirt, & took Miss Austin's picture out & cleaned the glass. The horse fair is today & tomorrow. Walked down the hill beyond Bakers.

Three months today since I came home. Commenced leaving off throat bandages. Mrs. Newman & Mrs. Russell, a colored woman, helped clean house. Rained all day. Took resting hours at Mr. Ingham's. Cleaned my room, the kitchen, ma's room & e & put down the carpet in Hattie's room.

Pleasant. The horse fair was postponed on account of rain. Mrs. Russell helped us. Mr. & Mrs. Connis, his mother, Willie & the baby came, left the baby, Martha Crawford, Clara Lewis & her sister called. Rec. a letter from Dr. Hurd.

Clara & Martha came & we went to the Dis. school picnic. Carried Miss Chapin a boquet, rained quite hard. Mr. Hamilton brought me home. Martha came up & stays here tonight. Finished fixing my room.

Last night was the first time I have slept with anyone since I went to Our Home. Morn. Mattie & I walked to the further side of Mr. Wheelock's lot. A.M. Went to the old cemetary. P.M. Mr. Hamilton came up, we went to John's S.S. carried him a boquet.

Mattie & I went way down the hill beyond Mr. Bakers. Mended my slate calico dress. P.M. Played whist, broken merchant, & everlasting. Mattie went down just night. She expects to go West soon.

Found I had been working to hard, lay in bed till after breakfast. A.M. Flora's nose bled & ma was there some time. P.M. Had a little touch of hysterics. Worked a while at my pants & got very tired. Put the braid on my merino pants.

Very pleasant. Hattie Andrews spent the day here. Received a long letter from May this A.M. & some verses by Mrs Osgood. P.M. Went to Mr. Downey's & picked some goose berries for pies. Gave Hattie some flowers & a geranium.

Went to our church, the first time in over 13 months. Rev. Wright preached. Rode with Mrs. McL. came home by Laona & the brick school h.. Commenced writing to Annie. Flora Hinman died this P.M. 3 o'clock. age 12

Got some flowers & Mrs. Cushing some & made a white wreath, & Mrs. Ingham & I made a colored one & she made 2 boquets. Mr. Hamilton came up. Funeral, 3 P.M. at house, Rev. Morton. Mrs. Cary called, Mrs. Todd was here.

Mr. & Mrs. Harris called a few minutes during resting hours & again after dinner. Dressed in my wrapper: wrote some more to Annie. Had Ida's bird here. Mrs. Waller says she expects Ed will go into partnership with J.C. Eve. Mr. W & Ed moved the melodion.


Wednesday July 2


Did not get up till after breakfast. Finished & sent Annie's letter. Mary Payne gave me a canary & Ida lent me a cage, so I have a bird. Mr. Hughes, & Mrs. Clothier called, also Eld. Downey. Hattie has been making "the best dress" for Mrs. Downey.


Thursday July 3

 

Last night was the first in 13 mos. without throat bandage. Mr. Hughes moved into Mrs. Todd's house. Mrs. Hinman is very sick with Diptheria. Finished putting pieces on the parlor paper & eve Mrs. Hughes put down the carpet & put the melodion back.


Friday July 4


Did not get up till after breakfast. Hattie was quite sick & we had to give her a bath. Mrs. Todd & Hattie called: Mr. & Mrs. Harris visited here: I worked most all day. Francis Gifford called & asked me to go to S.G.'s but could not get a horse. Eve. Riley, Eva & Lucy Burnham called. Got a cage.


Saturday July 5


F.G. was to come for me this morning if he could; I got my things all packed but he did not come. P.M. Sewed a little. Just night Hattie & I called on Mr. Hughes, Mary & Flora were there. Dora Lewis told her experience this P.M.

Sunday July 6


Dora was baptized, we all staid at home. Made my bed, the first time since I went to "Our Home:" the Laws came. Mr. Brewster & Minnie are married. The last Sun. we all sat in the parlor before J.C. was here. Eve. went to cemetery & he was there, bowed to him.


Monday July 7


A.M. Hattie & I sat by the grapevine & sewed. Took a bath. P.M. It rained quite hard sewed some. Just night, Hattie went down to Mr. Hamilton's. After I had gone to bed got a letter from Mrs. Scranton & a paper from Mollie.


Tuesday July 8


Sent a paper to Mrs. Scranton. Sewed a little. Just night Hattie & I went to the ditch beyond Bakers & got some wild grasses & made & put up one boquet. Rec. 10 No's. of the Laws to use getting subscribers.


Wednesday July 9


Morn. Took a walk in the rain. A.M. Put up a 3 grass boquet & sewed some Laws. P.M. Made long calls on Laura Wheelock, Mrs. Clothier & the Morgan girls. Rec. a letter from F.M.G. telling why he did not come.


Thursday July 10


Ma went down town early. Have had a severe headache & was dizzy some. A.M. Ida & I got some grasses. Took my bath later & slept till 3 O.C. Ate dinner in bed. Put up some boquets & began a letter to Mollie. Mrs. Russell has been washing.


Friday July 11


Did not get up till after breakfast. Mrs. R. washed again. Made & put up some boquets, then went out under one of Mr. Snow's apple trees & wrote to Mollie. P.M. Did the same. Eva Steele, Mrs. Hughes, Mary & Flora called.


Saturday July 12


Did not get up till after breakfast. Received a letter from Mrs. Godfrey. Took a bath. P.M. Fixed H.'s hat & strings. She & I called at Mrs. Hubbards, Mrs. Gifford, & Mr. Morris & Mr. Handy's. No one at home at Mrs. H. & Mr. H.'s.


Sunday July 13


Got up at 5.20 am & walked to J. Gardner's. Ma went to church. Hattie spent most of the day at Mr. Hamilton's making head caps for soldiers. Made a beautiful boquet of fruit & flowers. Ma & I called on Mrs. Hinman, just night went to cemetary & put flowers on Jennie C.'s g.


Monday July 14


Beautiful showers. Sent Mollie's letter & a paper to F.M. Gifford. Washed Jennie's cage. H. & I have been fixing my things to go to Sheridan. Just night made a nice boquet for H. to take to Mrs. & Mr. Hamilton.


Tuesday July 15


Morn. Transplanted some candy tufts & lady slipper. Stiched a black silk sacque for Ida & earned .18. Mr. Gifford brought us a load of wood & a present of some butter.


Wednesday July 16


Had our first string beans. A.M. Transplanted some flowers & e. P.M. Dr. Parker came while we were eating dinner & staid till after 7 O.C. had a very good visit. talked about going home with him but concluded not to.


Thursday July 17


Had our first new potatoes. A.M. Went to Mary Brown's school & called at Miss Higgins: the first time I have walked down the hill since I came home. 3 P.M. Got Mr. Smith's horse & came to Mr. Gifford's. Ma & H. did not stay. F. & J.B. & 2 cousins were here. Bye went home with them. F. sent me a snow ball. Bye & I had a visit in my room.


Friday July 18


Last night was the first time I have staid away from home since I went to "Our Home." P.M. Rode on horse back & then on a load of hay. Eve. Bye & I went to Mr. Boschet. Frank was not at home.


Saturday July 19


After breakfast, skimmed 5 pans of milk: made a nice boquet & picked some currants. P.M. Rode Finnie to Mr. B.'s. Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Clough, & Mrs. Otis visited here. Eve. Frank was here. danced with Bye & him. enjoyed it much.

Helped pick currants & cherries for breakfast: skimmed 9 pans milk. Mr. & Mrs. Wiman & Jerome & Louisa were here to dinner. Went to the Centre with J. & L., heard Eld. Mills. Mr. & Mrs. Clough & Aunt Paulina & her husband have been here.

So lame all over that I could hardly "navigate." Read some in the Laws & one of May's letters to Ma G. P.M. Picked cherries & berries for a graham shortcake for tea. Rode Caty over to Mr. Boscherts. Bye & I played whist.


Tuesday July 22


Read another of May's letters & some with Laws to Mrs. Gifford. Got up during resting hours, put on my wrapper & came down & read a while. P.M. Ma & I rode to the woods on the hay rack & walked back. Picked berries, grasses & e & e.


Wednesday July 23


Put on Bye's overcoat & took a nice walk in the rain. Made & put up two boquets. Bye showed me how to braid whiplash braid & I braided my watch cord. Frank sharpened my knife. P.M. Ma & I went to Mr. B.'s Combed Tressa's hair. went in the woods & made her a boquet.


Thursday July 24


Frank staid here last night, we played whist, eucher & danced. P.M. Rode Caty to Mr. B.'s & read to Tressa, & e. Jose took a ride. P.M. We were going to Aunt Paulina's but I was not able, lay in bed most of the time, had a severe shower.


Friday July 25


A.M. Rode to Mr. B.'s. Tressa took a little ride. Frank expects to go to Fredonia & I sent a note home. Frank did not go to Fredonia. Wrote some to Mrs. Scranton. Aunt Paulina took tea here. Frank tried to help me on my horse but I did not knew enough.


Saturday July 26


Tressa spent the A.M. here. Mr. Gifford, Bye & Frank went to Dunkirk with a load of hay. Sent by Bye for some split peas. Ate too much dinner. Read some to Mrs. Gifford. Jose was here a while this afternoon.


Sunday July 27


Pleasant. Bye was gone most of the day. Mr. & Mrs. Wiman, Chester Wright, Mrs. Wright, & her sister of Napoli, Catt. Co. called. As I could not go to church, I preached at home: gave away 2 dress reform tracts. Wrote to Mrs. Scranton.


Monday July 28


A.M. Pitted nearly a pan of cherries. Read Back Log Corner Whisperings in the April Laws. P.M. Pitted cherries, skimmed milk, mended stockings & read half of the dress reform tract. Had a good talk with Bye upstairs. He promised to try to stop using tobacco.


Tuesday July 29


Morn. Walked to the road & got grass enough for 2 boq. After breakfast rode Caty to the woods as Dr. J. told me to. Mr. & Mrs. Ward came berrying. Pitted cherries, wrote home, slept, skimmed milk, looked over & mashed berries, made 2 boqs., caught Caty for Bye & finished D.R. tract.


Wednesday July 30


Did too much yesterday & have not felt as well. A.M. Went upstairs & took a nap: took a bath: did not sleep any at resting hours. P.M. Rode to the hay field on the rack: gathered some moss. Pauline was here to tea.


Thursday July 31


After breakfast caught Caty & rode her up, then to Paulina's & got Louisa, then to Mr. Boscherts. Mrs. B. spent most of the day here. Took resting hours & dinner, then rode to Miss Gursts school: very good. 6 P.M. Went to Mr. B.'s to see Miss G. Bye came over to come back.


Friday Aug. 1


Went down as far as the brook, caught Fannie, got on, rode to the berries. Mrs. G. & I picked 3 or 4 qts.: rode to the house. P.M. Picked over & jammed the berries: packed my things. As they were busy, Charlie Wright brought me to Jerome's.


Saturday Aug. 2


Went down to the Lake before breakfast. A.M. Went to the lake & wrote some to Mrs. Scranton: went down again beyond the point & took a bath. the first time I ever went into the water so. Eve. rode one of the horses to pasture.


Sunday Aug. 3


Jerome, Louisa & I went into the lake as soon as we got up & I took my first lesson in swimming. J. thinks I would learn easily. After breakfast we picked some berries for tea. P.M. Mr. & Mrs. Gifford came down; we took a boat ride: came home with them.


Monday Aug. 4


Got some apples & fixed for baking. Frank came along while I was getting them, the first time I have seen him in a week. Skimmed lots of milk. Wrote some to Mr. Bemis. P.M. Mrs. Boschert was here. Mended a pair of stockings & picked a basket of cherries.


Tuesday Aug. 5


Picked a pan of currants before breakfast. A.M. Picked & pitted a basket of cherries. Sealed up 2 large bottles of cherries. Jose was here all the P.M. Bye went to Dunkirk with a load of hay.


Wednesday Aug. 6


Rode Caty down to Jerome's & took breakfast; lay down after I got back & took a nap, then pitted some cherries & made a pie. Ate dinner at 12 1/2 then dressed & went to Mr. Morse's: made a boquet: found it rather hard to resist green apple pie & did it.


Thursday Aug. 7


Ate my first raw apple. Am very lame & sore to pay for riding so fast yesterday. A.M. Gathered oats & grass for boquets & read. Just night, Mrs. G. & I went over in McDonal's lot & got barley, oats & grass. Mrs. Gifford ate dinner with me.

Friday Aug. 8


Got some wheat before breakfast. Skimmed 12 p.'s milk, helped shell peas, put some tape on my lawn pants: took a bath. P.M. Went to Mr. B.'s a while. Jose was not there. Came near going away but did not.


Saturday Aug. 9


Skimmed milk & put a watch pocket in my lawn dress. Had 2 or 3 hard showers this A.M., went to Mr. B.'s between showers. P.M. Jose & I went in the woods & got some mosses & brakes: pressed the brakes, Jose came home with me & Frank came after. We played, danced & e. Jose staid all night.


Sunday Aug. 10


Jose staid till after breakfast. Skimmed milk. Wrote some more to Mr. Bemis. P.M. Tressa came over, then Jose & Bye, then Chester & Mary & we all went to the woods. Eve. Bye played & sung & Chester & Mary & I sung in the Bell.


Monday Aug. 11


After breakfast, pitted some cherries, then went up & packed most of my things. About noon Mr. Gifford brought me to Mr. Couvis'. P.M. Skimmed 14 pns mk. & wrote some to Mrs. Godfrey. Eve. Called at Mr. Jewels, Mr. & Mrs. Harris were here when I got back.

Morn. Took a walk. After breakfast skimmed 23 pans mk.: wrote some to Mrs. Godfrey. P.M. Finished my letters to Mrs. Godfrey & Mr. Bemis, called on Mrs. Jewel & we went out in the orchard. Eve. We went to a war meeting at the Centre. The ward of Dunkirk spoke: got one volinteer. Dk. band.


Wednesday Aug. 13


Got home at 12 last night & were very late this morning. A.M. Went home with Mrs. J. & spent the day. He went to Fredonia but got back in time for our dinner. P.M. Walked & had a talk after, a sing. Eve. Went over to Mary's & had a play & sing.


Thursday Aug. 14


Staid at Mr. J.'s last night. He had to draw wheat & as we could not ride we walked. Georgie drove the horse over & I drove back to Mr. Harris's. Read, mended a pair of stockings, sewed on the machine for hrs., skimmed milk & e.


Friday Aug. 15


Morn. Got the eggs & e. & meat. Mr. Marble partly promised to subscribe for the Laws. Mr. & Mrs. H. & I rode to the further orchard & picked up apples. I walked down through the woods. Ate dinner with them. Called at Mr. Carey's & rode back with Mr. Harris.


Saturday Aug. 16


"Home again"! After breakfast packed my things Mr. Harris brought me home. Commenced having dinner at 2 P.M. Picked 2 qts. currants. Put up my things, rested & e. It is very pleasant to be home again.


Sunday Aug. 17


Mrs. Downey has a "boy baby" two wks. old today. Went to Mr. Waller's got the seed & took care of Jennie. Ma & Hattie went to church. Eld. Wheelock preached. I spent resting hours under the plum tree. Had my first green corn.


Monday Aug. 18


Harriet & Ida went black berrying & took their breakfast & staid till 4 P.M. She brought the August Laws home & I have read in that & the Atlantic. Helped look over the berries. Lucy Baldwin, Eunice & Alice Miller called here: & Ella Tuttle. Rec. a paper from Mollie.


Tuesday Aug. 19


Have been shelling beans. Received a letter from Annie inviting me to visit her. P.M. Carried Mrs. Downey some black berries & saw the new Willie. She says she will walk down here as soon as she is able. The Misses Higgins called.


Wednesday Aug. 20


A.M. Wrote to Annie. Received a letter from Mr. Bemis. Susan Thomas is failing fast. Made a wreath of evergreen moss & some flowers. Ed Waller came last night from Jamestown after his first trial of Camp life. Made him a pin roll. Mrs. Handy & Cate Morian called.


Thursday Aug. 21


Made a watch pocket & felt like going to bed by the time I got it done. My lungs have been conjested, have had neuralgia & e. took a pack, fom. & sponge bath. P.M. Feel some better. Ed was over a few minutes, gave him the pin roll.


Friday Aug. 22


Had a Good Bye kiss from the "Soldier laddie". Feel much better but did not get up till about 10 O.C. Set up a linen bag stocking. P.M. Miss Norton called a few minutes. Put in a watch pocket.


Saturday Aug. 23


Harriet went berrying. Ma & I got Mr. Ingham's pony & went down town. Mr. Wiley subscribed. P.M. All went to a war meeting. Eve. Went to another war meeting. Mr. Cutting & Rev. Dr. Hicock of Buffalo spoke. Finished the $.8500.


Sunday Aug. 24


After trying at Mr. McLenathan's & Mr. Stanley's Ma got Mr. Porter to carry me to church. Eld. Downey preached a very good sermon: the first time I ever heard him. Went to S.S. am in Mr. Hamilton's class. The first time I have been in our S.S. since May 19/61.


Monday Aug. 25


Rose at 6 1/2 o.c. dressed & walked down to Mr. Hamilton's & spent the day. He is 59 years old today. The first time I have walked down further than Miss Higgins in 15 mos. Harriet came down & home with me.


Tuesday Aug. 26

Mother & Harriet went berrying before breakfast and did not get home till 4 P.M. got 22 ½ qts. I stiched a collar & I breadths of a dress for Mrs. Waller. Called at Eld. Downey’s and Mr. Hughes. Mary & Flosy & Bradly Barkers little girl were there. Ida gave me a ripe peach.


Wednesday Aug. 27

Got Mr. McLenathans horse & went down town, got my kid shoes, Hattie and I each a dress & collar & e. Got caught in the rain. Took a sitz. Harriet got a letter from Dr. Parker wanting her to come there & bring the machine.


Thursday Aug. 28

Have been fixing my clothes some preparitory to going to Annie’s. Have had alternate showers and sunshine: a very severe storm last night & of rain & rain, & hail. P.M. picked some berries at Miss Nortons.


Friday Aug. 29

Went to Miss Norton's & picked berries till breakfast time. Have been putting the canvas in my French calico pants & was bothered as it was the first I ever put in. Rec. a letter from Annie: she will take Jennie.


Saturday Aug. 30


Morn. Ida & I walked to the graveyard. A.M. Sewed & e. P.M. Hattie & I called at Mr. Morgan's, Mr. Wheelock's, Mr. Smith's Mr. Hughes', & Eva Steele's. Eve. Put the binding on my French calico pants & ma ironed the dress. Midday. Took a bath.

Ma & I went to church, Hattie staid at home. Eld. Dodge preached. Staid to S.S. J.H. talked well about slavery. J. C. was there. Rode down & walked home. Started to go to a meeting on the fair ground, was none. Wrote some to May.


Monday Sept. 1


Got Mr. Ingham's horse & Ma & I went to Mr. Ward's, then to Mrs. Baldwin's & got her horse. It rained all day so we waited till 5 P.M. when we started & went to Mr. Gifford's. Staid all night: her mother is here.


Tuesday Sept. 2


Got my clothes, boquets, some apples & e & started home about 10. Called at Aunt Paulina's & got some asparagus & fox glove plants. P.M. Felt tired & not well. Lay on the lounge most of the time. Eve. Ma read some of Fremont's hundred days in Mo.


Wednesday Sept. 3


Mrs. Hubbard called with some linen & we all let the work go & made lint for the soldiers this A.M. Got the Baptist, & Laws, with an invitation to old patients for Oct 1st. Mr. Downey is sick & he is at the association at Stockton.


Thursday Sept. 4


Wrote a note to Mr. Bemis. Harriet staid with Mrs. Downey last night, & she & ma have been there a good deal today. Received long letter from Uncle Guernsey & Mollie Wood. Emily Morgan called. Put up the grass boquets from Mrs. C.'s.


Friday Sept. 5


Morn. Worked in the garden. A.M. Put some boquets in Hattie's room: called at Mr. McLenathans & wrote to Annie. P.M. Mrs. Harris was here a while, brought us some apples. Clara Coonrad called. H. & I called at Mr. Hughes.


Saturday Sept. 6


Morn. Walked down to the cemetary steps with Miss Norton. A.M. Sewed, took a sitz & e. P.M. Walked to covenant meeting: the first time I have been in 20 ms. Mary & Charlotte Hart told experience. Called at Dr. Whitfords: very pleasant.


Sunday Sept. 7


Feel very tired after my yesterdays walk. Did not go to church, but rode down to the water & saw the Hart girls baptized: it was very beautiful. P.M. Mr. Haynes came to take Hattie to Dr. Parker's.


Monday Sept. 8


Mr. Haynes was here to breakfast. Harriet started about 10. I went & bid Mr. & Mrs. Downey Good Bye. The 3 o.c. bus came at 2:20 & Dan helped pack my sachel: am at the Eastern: left some things & man came at 5. Took a walk around town.


Tuesday Sept. 9


Bid mother Good Bye & took the cars at 6 for Dayton: met Miss Brigham, talked of the Cure & gave her a D.R.T. Reached D. at 7, left in stage at 8 1/2 for Gowanda. V. Flanagon was a passenger. Took dinner at Mr. Kelly's. Came to Annie's.


Wednesday Sept. 10


Took a walk, & a rest, & a nice breakfast & read Mollie's letter: played cards & Annie gave me a nice bath: had a good sleep. P.M. Picked lint & began some wreaths for the children: "red, white & blue."


Thursday Sept. 11


Annie & I took a walk in Green Wood Valley. After we got the chamber work done, we went black berrying, found about the nicest picking I ever saw. Had a nice sleep, dinner, then came to my room & played cards. Wrote to Mother.


Friday Sept. 12


Were going to the annual picnic for the Indian Orphans but it rained. Took early resting hours: Annie wrote me an excuse & I wrote some in May's letter: had our picnic dinner here.


Saturday Sept. 13


Lay in bed considerable. Mrs. Sherman Annie's cousin Helen spent the day here. Moved the parlor cook stove into Annie's room & we are going to housekeeping. Eve. Had a game of 4 hand eucher.


Sunday Sept. 14


Annie & I commenced housekeeping it is very pleasant. After we got the work done, sat in the front door & read the Atlantic. P.M. Rode over to call on Mr. & Mrs. Crownise, they were not at home & we came home & went again: saw their mosses.


Monday Sept. 15


Had a little sick spell this A.M. Had an early dinner & went to Mr. Pratt's, as they were not at home we got some black cherries & ate, went to an old school house & staid a while, came back to Mr. P.'s, got caught in the rain. Staid all night.


Tuesday Sept. 16


Came home got ready & went to the Indian School Celebration. Walked with Supt. Bier, he likes our dress & with Mr. Stebbin, who knows Joe, & Miss Joslyn a teacher: saw the Asylum. Annie got a letter from May.


Wednesday Sept. 17


Gave up housekeeping, it was too lonesome. A.M. Got ready & about noon started for Luther Landon's, visited with Ellen & Libbie; after supper Anne L. rode to Bishop L.'s, her father's. Anne left for home in the night.


Thursday Sept. 18


After breakfast Eleeta Mr. S. & I went out in the orchard. Had a little shower, then Annie put on b.'s boots & Mr. S’s & we took a walk. Went to bed & Eleeta read us a letter from Mrs. Brewster.


Friday Sept. 19


A.M. All commenced writing to Mr. Bacon. P.M. Started with the intention of having our pictures taken for him but did not, called on Mrs. Hubbard & got some fine flowers. Eve. Sophia drew our pictures, Annie wrote & e & e.


Saturday Sept. 20


Finished our letter to Mr. Bacon: sent our portrates & the “Scenes of a Frolic”. Started for home about 16 1/2: came by Kerrs Corners. got a letter from Mother. P.M. Rested, helped pare peaches, read, & e. Eve. Played Ships arrived.


Sunday Sept. 21


Morn. Took a walk in the woods alone. Annie & I rode to meeting with Mr. & Mrs. Willet in "Hemlock Hall," saw Mr. & Mrs. Hawley, Mr. & Mrs. Linton & e. the Hall is in some beautiful woods. P.M. Talked with A. & wrote some to May.

Morn. Went to Sylvia's & got some cream. A.M. Took a nap, then a bath & another nap. P.M. Helen was here. Mrs. Howe came to stay a day or two. Began to fix my Shally dress: Mrs. H., A. & I, took a walk. Eve. Pratt family were here.


Tuesday Sept. 23


Mrs. Howe & I took a walk in the woods. Sewed some on my dress & finished & sent May's letter. Mrs. H. subscribed for the Laws & Mrs. Harmon's tract. P.M. Annie carried Mrs. Howe to Shirley. I went down where Augusta was watching the cows: sewed & played cards.

A.M. Rainy. Helen plated my dress skirt & I sewed the cord on. P.M. Played cards with Charlie, partly sewed my skirt on & packed my things to go to Evans.


Thursday Sept. 25


Annie & I rose early & started for Mr. Huntington's, took our breakfast & ate it on the road: got a letter from ma at Kerrs Corners. Annie left me & went home. Finished fixing my dress, took a walk & wrote to ma.

A.M. Took a ride with Lydia & then with Nathan. P.M. Sylvia brought me to Sarah Boyce. rode to Joseph's but did not stop any. Lucy was gone & Aunt Lydia Otis came & came in Sarah's room. Eve. All were in here.

Morn. Sarah & I walked to Joseph's & back. A.M. Wrote to Mr. Simmons, enclosing $3.21. P.M. Sarah & I went to Mr. Southwick's where the rest were before. Eve. All met here dancing. Danced with Alonzo, Lahna, & twice with Uncle Benjamin.

Morn. Walked to Joseph's. Rode to "Hemlock Hall" with Uncle Benjamin. George Taylor was chairman & Lyman C. Howe speaker. Annie's brother John is here & she thinks of going home with him. Eve. at J's.

Came to Joseph's to breakfast: went out with him to set strawberries: after dinner Grandma Prudence & I took a ride: Mr. & Mrs. Huntington have gone to Rochester: stopped at Mr. Hawley's when I came back.

Rode to Joseph's on Billy. Talked of going home to the fair but shall not. Alonzo started for Chau. Co. Horace Clough called & Casper. Sarah & I would have gone to Annies but for the rain. Took a bath. P.M. Came to Jose phs.

Had a sore throat & rested most of the A.M. John went to Angola & brought me a letter from Mrs. Simmons. P.M. Sarah & I came to Mr. Pratts: sold Mrs. Willit my bird cage: had a good rest before they got home: Annie & John came. A. staid all night. I would not let her write.


Friday Oct. 3


Annie & I slept together last night & had a good talk. Paid John the "postage" on Mrs. Simmon's letter when I got his cost. After breakfast carried Annie to Mr. Tucker & bid her Good Bye & came to Alonzo's. He has not got back yet. P.M. Took care of my things, rested & played.


Saturday Oct. 4


Mr. Hawley came in the night, brought me a letter from home, he was there yesterday. A.M. Did a little washing. P.M. Sarah & I went to the orchard & to Joseph's. Evening: ironed.


Sunday Oct. 5


A.M. Walked to Joseph's & around the orchard. Went to the Hall with Alonzo & Joseph: as there was not chance to go to Mrs. Laphams came back with them: got very tired. P.M. Frank Baldwin & wife, Mr. Crouch & others came. Sarah & I came to Josephs. I staid.


Monday Oct. 6


A.M. Came to Alonzo's, think of going home with Frank Baldwin. P.M. Sarah & I went to Joseph's. Eve. At Sarah's not very well. Joseph came, put on mu wrapper & played eucher.


Tuesday Oct. 7


A.M. Sarah, Selma, & I tried the new buggy. A. & L. went to her father's. Sarah & I made boquets, wreaths, & e. Eve. Company dancing & e. I danced with Joseph. Wm. Huntington & Frank Baldwin.


Wednesday Oct. 8


A.M. Felt rather tired, lay a bed, & sat outdoors & read the new Laws & "Among the Pines." P.M. Sarah & I stood up & rode out into the cornfield with Alonzo: went from there to Joseph's: sat under a tree & saw him dig potatoes. Eve. Pared apples.


Thursday Oct. 9

After breakfast, went to Alonzo's; felt tired & took a nap. Then Selma gave Sarah & me a ride: stopped at Joseph's. Sat & talked a long time after dinner. Eve. Prudence came home from Gowanda. Went to bed a little after 7 o.c.


Friday Oct. 10


After breakfast came to Alonzo's & packed my things for Home. 11 1/2 o.c. Mrs. Clough, Cap, Lucy, Selma & I started: got to uncle Benjamin's at 4 1/2. Ate supper, the 2nd time in 16 mths. Had a farewell party for uncle Newton: danced till 4 o.c. I went to bed about 12: danced with Orville, Dec. W., Frank B. & Casper. Eight of our old school on the hill present.


Saturday Oct. 11


After breakfast, aunt Jane put on my dress, Cap played, & we danced French four. Uncle Benjamin, uncle Newton, aunt Jane & I came to Fredonia, went to Tarbell's: came home: sold aunt J. my French calico dress: she subscribed. Rested the rest of the day.


Sunday Oct. 12


Found $3. uncle Newton paid me yesterday is missing. Harriet went to church. P.M. Alice Wilcox called. Got Mr. McLenathan's horse & ma & I went to uncle Benjamins to see about the money: there is $3 gone by my carelessness.


Monday Oct. 13


Did my room work, hope to do it regularly. Marcia Gates & Miss Hill, the lady who is adopting the American Costume came after school: spent the evening, had a very good visit about the reform.


Tuesday Oct. 14


Did my room work, gathered some flower seeds & took a nice sitz bath, & sleep. P.M. Darned stockings, called on Mrs. Downey; met Mr. Whitford - says the Laws have not come. Ellen Tuttle called.


Wednesday Oct. 15


A.M. Ma & I mended two wash bowls that have been lying by a long time. Just night read a little, went to Mr. Tuttle's a few minutes, saw a Miss William's; Ella gave me some grapes. Eve. Hattie read loud.


Thursday Oct. 16


Made the "grahams" for breakfast. A.M. Mended some more dishes. P.M. Hattie went to stay with Marcia & Celoria, & I called on Mrs. Whitford, carried her some "Laws," brought home some milk. Called on Lucy Burnham.


Friday Oct. 17


My throat has been quite sore had it fomented at morning & night. A.M. Went to Mr. Wallers a while. Bound over my old suspenders. Miss Higgins called. Mr. Post called here yesterday when we were gone.


Saturday Oct. 18


About sick with a cold, lay in bed this A.M. Harriet is sick too today. Just as I got asleep at resting hours, Mr. Hamilton came, he is about sick. P.M. Was dressed, picked some peas. Eve. Set a plant from my geranium in a pint cup.

Took a little walk before breakfast but did not go out again. Midday. Had my throat fomented - had just got to sleep when Mr. Haynes came. He staid till dusk. Ida spent the eve here, they were at meet.


Monday Oct. 20


Lay in bed all day. Wrote to Rollin H. Arnold, & sent 2 Nos. Laws to Annie Burrett. Harriet wrote to Mrs. Sinton. Bridget Lash brought her work & staid a while. Eve. H. got the Lady of the Lake & read.


Tuesday Oct. 21


Lay in bed again all day. Began composing a letter to Dr. Hurd. Harriet read loud in the Lady of the Lake. P.M. Felt some better & thought I should get up, but did not. Ma called at Mr. Moir's.


Wednesday Oct. 22


A.M. Dressed for the first since Sunday. P.M. H. went down town. Ma bought some grapes of Miss Norton. Ida brought me some winter flowers which I put in my wreath. Eve. Mr. Wiley called & talked.


Thursday Oct. 23


Morn. Took a walk. Fixed the band of my wadded pants. Ma & Hattie sealed 10 qts. plumbs. P.M. Played on the melodion considerable. Hattie Andrews was here some time. Set the Verbena in my little jar.

Took care of my room & e. Took a sitz & Hattie a sponge bath. Labeled some of the canned fruit. Started for a walk but my back was so lame, I stopped at Mrs. Hinmans. Eve. Very tired & rather "blue."


Saturday Oct. 25


Our first snow. Sent a paper to Mrs. Cable. A.M. Went down in the wood house & finished labeling the fruit. Hattie swept my room, & P.M. I put it in order & cleared the table. Eve. Walked towards town to meet Hattie.

The ground was white this morning & it has snowed all day. Hattie went to church. I commenced copying my letter to Dr. Hurd. P.M. Mr. Wiley brought home my Laws. Eve. Took a walk. Called at Miss Norton's.

Mrs. Newman has a boy weighing 12 lbs. Ma picked the last grapes. Took a bath. P.M. Called at Mrs. Saffords, Mr. Moris & Mr. Bakers, to get subscribers, & at Mr. Hughs: her mother is with her.

I wrote a note to J.C. asking about Joe's book. Harriet wrote to Cousin Hulbert & Mrs. Sinton. Had green peas for breakfast. P.M. Went chestnutting in the fairground with Mary Safford.

Hattie Andrews came. Harvey & Mrs. B. subscribed: gave us lots of apples. Ma & I got Mr. Ingham's horse, called on Mrs. Todd, then at the cider mill: then on Mr. Barber: earnest health reformers: staid till night.

Not feeling very well, lay in bed till just night. Hattie went down town twice; carried some grapes to send to Almond & got us calico dresses alike. Eve. Read Prof. Porters address.

Almond & Charlie Hamilton came, said their father & mother were coming this P.M. Cut out some cloth shoes: began a letter to Dr. Jackson. P.M. Mr. & Mrs. H. came, quite a pleasant visit: he is going to clean our watches & take the laws.

A.M. Went to Mrs. Ingham's a minute; just as I came back, a Mr. & Mrs. Smith of Stockton called to see our mill, & e.: health reformers. Mrs. Ingham took dinner here. Eve. Wrote.

Finished & sent Dr. Jackson's letter & a paper to Mr. Gazley. Mother went to town & Elee Bonds got some sweet apples. Partly made my shoes. Eve. Ester Smith & Amelia Morgan called.

Finished my shoes, all but binding. It froze hard last night & has been freezing all day. Made a fire in my room, undressed & tried to sleep, but did not. Eve. Called at Miss Norton's.

W.M. Hamilton was here at about 11. Mr. Root came, a pleasant surprise, visited, he rested, dinner; went to Grandma's grave, the first time, called at Mr. Barber's & Mr. Hamilton's. Eve. Visited late.

H. MR. R. & I took a walk, ate breakfast in our headcaps, ma went to church. I read M. some letters & looked at his Autograph book. rested, rested. went to S.S. Dec. H. was here to dinner, read Mollies letter. M. played & sung "Sister & I." Eve. Read my diagnosis & visited sweetly.

All took an early breakfast & together & Mr. Root left in the first Bus: Hattie walked down with him. Dr. Parker called. P.M. Ma & H. went to Elee Bonds & gather about 5 bus. of apples. Eve. H. & I called at Mr. Hughes.

Rested & took a sitz & H. a sponge bath. P.M. Pared apples today. Mrs. Merrifield came to see about buying a feather bed. Mrs. Clothier & Hattie called a while & got some papers to read.

A.M. Mr. Newman & ma built the wash room. P.M. Bridget Lash brought us a pail of milk & took the kittys. After school Lucy Baldwin & Eunice Miller came.

Jerome Baker died yesterday in Elmira coming home from war, got here this morn., went up with Alice Wilcox to see him. P.M. Mrs. Dr. Whitford & Mrs. Cook called: ma & I called at Mr. Rose's, carried my shoes to be soled & e.

A.M. Rested, walked, & e. P.M. Jerome Baker's funeral. Ma & I went to the house. Service by Rev. Crane, Prayer, Downey. Ma went to the church, marched from the church to music & e. Bye Gifford was married Nov. 5th.

A beautiful clear, cold morn. A.M. Mended my slippers, took a walk & a bath. Before dinner Hattie & I called at Mrs. Baldwins. Ma blacked the parlor stove. Eve. H. got a letter from H. B. Stiles.

Morn. Hattie & I walked down the new street past the fairground. Ma went to church. Had a fire in the parlor. I set the dinner table & washed the dishes, the first dishes I have washed since I went to Our Home.

Hattie & I both about sick with colds: did not get up till 3 P.M. Rainy & dreary, has not been a neighbor here today. H. & I played cards. Eve. Had throat fom. & took a foot bath.

A little better than yesterday, but pretty weak this A.M. Ma went down town. Mrs. Todd & Hattie & Mrs. Downey called. Got a good letter from Mr. Root. Mr. Wiley sends for Miss Austin's lith.

Has rained all day. Hattie has coughed & we have both spit all day. Midday, took fom. Cleaned a glass to put over a picture. Eve. Read in an old "Ladies Book." Read my diagnosis & drank in strength from it.

Sent papers to G. W. Putnam, Mother & Mr. Bemis & a letter to Joe: rec. a letter from Miss Austin. A.M. Sewed the breadths of ma's skirt. Mr. Hamilton called: took a bath. P.M. Have been clearing off the bookshelf.

Mr. Colburn brought us a bushel of wheat & 100 lbs. flour. Sent a Law to Fidelia. Mended my drawers. Took resting hours on the lounge. Cleaned the melodion keys. Guess Hattie has Whooping cough.

Took a walk, the first time in some days, got very tired. A.M. Mended my stockings, & e. & took a bath. Hattie went to Miss Norton's . P.M. Went to Eld. Downey's, held Willie, got the "minutes" & Republican. Ma is with Mrs. Hughes.

Mother is 60 years old today. A.M. She took care of Mrs. Hughes a while. P.M. Were all invited to eat dinner with Mrs. Ingham, had a pleasant time. Mr. Harris is going to take the Laws.

Rec. a letter from Mrs. Simmons. A.M. Stanley came up saying aunt Moore has got home from the West. P.M. Went to Mr. Hughes a few minutes. Eve. Martha Doyle brought a cloak for Hattie to stich.

My lungs were sore last night & I have commenced coughing. Hattie went home with Mrs. Harris at 3 P.M. Eve. Had much pain all over & symptoms of agne. Took a foot bath, & went to bed.

Have coughed considerable & felt miserably. About noon went to Mr. Hughes a little while. P.M. Sarah Nicholas came here, showed her my autograph book & the Laws. Eve. Took foot bath & fom. on throat & chest.

Am sore all over. Took a sponge bath, before I got up, Mr. Haynes came, brought me Dr. Tralls address in Washington, staid to supper, not dinner, & then went to dancing school.

Sent a paper to Jenkins. Rec. the Laws. Hattie Andrews, Mr. Hamilton, Aunt Moore, Harriet & little Mary, Mr. Haynes & Mrs. Todd have been here. Mr. H. put up a clock shelf & made a ladder for my verbena. Coughed.

Put on a chest compress. Miss Sarah Nicholas subscribed for the Laws. Just night ma went down town, I coughed very hard while she was gone. Rec. a good long letter from May & the Baptist. Eve. Wrote a little.

Written to Mrs. Simmons & sent my letter to Dr. Hurd, requesting him to hand it to Mrs. Godfrey to send to May. Ma wrote to uncle James. Eve. Lay on the lounge & read in the new Laws.

Was going to take a bath but concluded not to. Ma went down town. After dinner went to Mr. Hughes, Flora was there most of the time & Charr called. Better before breakfast, not much since.


Saturday Dec. 13


Ate some beefsteak for breakfast, the first meat I have tasted since March 16th. Had the house banked. A.M. Took a sitz, did not get up till just night, then dressed & lay right down & went to sleep.


Sunday Dec. 14


Picked 3 or 4 violets & some green things & two boquets carried one to Mrs. Hughes, Sarah came home with me & we found Mr. Hamilton here, he staid to dinner. Eve. Sarah was here.


Monday Dec. 15


Both ate breakfast in my room. A.M. Miss Norton was here a while. Think I am some better. Bound a sandpaper with red, while & blue. Just night ma went down town & I went to Mr. Inghams.

Have lived in my room all day. The rain changed into snow last night & it is very stormy. Commenced that long promised collar for Mollie. A.M. Took a little walk. Eve. Not quite as well.


Wednesday Dec. 17


Mother was washing & I spent the day at Miss Norton's, worked on Mollie's collar & read in the Laws. Leforce Clothier brought a cloak for me to stich, but thought I would not be able.


Thursday Dec. 18


Have felt better than before in 2 or 3 weeks. Sent a note to Marcia asking her to come here but she is too busy now. Just night took a walk & met Mrs. Lake, pleasant chat.


Friday Dec. 19


Finished Mollie's collar. A.M. Took a walk & washed the clock. P.M. Mrs. Downey came & brought Willie for the first time. Emily Morgan called. Carried Mrs. McLenathan the Laws & got some papers.

Sent Mrs. Ebersole a paper. Had a fire in the kitchen, first time since Sun. A.M. Mended stockings, called at Mr. McLenathans & took a bath. P.M. Called at Mr. Morgans.

Very cold. Ma was going to P.M. meeting but Aunt Moore came & staid till dark. She told us about her visit at different places; cousin Martha plays on the melodion.

Received a scarf from ma for Christmas. Mr. & Mrs. Hamilton spent the day here & we had a good visit but I kept thinking of "Our Home" all day. Sat down where I never did before.

Went to the offices, visited a while in the parlor: staid in my room a while; went to No. 4 to see Dr. Hurd but did not find him, called on Miss Thayer, & at No. 2 on Giles & Mrs. Jackson. Ate dinner at the patients table. After dinner: called on Mother Hawke, found her in bed; Dr. H. came here: called on Mrs. Simmons; evening Miss Davis as Mr. Morris, Miss Sullivan & Mrs. Dickinson as his Mother & Scotch sister Jennie. sung Coming through the Rye, Saittle more Liden, Dixie, & e. Gave them a note of thanks & called on Mr. Morris for a speech, said it was his 'maden' speech. Dr. Hurd proposed playing bottom: May judged me a rehersal.Gave Alas, it is a pity. Miss Austin, Mrs. Dickinson & Mr. Arnold, Dr. Hurd to bow to the prettyest, kneed to the wittiest, & sit in the lap of the one he loved best. he said he should have to sit in all our laps, sat in Miss Austins. He helped me upstairs & kissed me good night.
