The Senior Class of Rocky Grove High School
announces its Commencement Exercises Tuesday evening, May thirty-first
Nineteen hundred fifty-five at eight o'clock in the Rocky Grove
Auditorium, Franklin, Pennsylvania. His mother missed his high
school graduation due to the birth of his sister Mary Anne who went to
stay with Kitty and Jay Blum. Their mother was very ill after the
birth and had to have surgery to repair her bladder. Mary Anne
stayed six weeks at the Blum's. Both grandfathers Joseph and Lee
died the same month.
The Oil City Derrick News clipping had the following
article. "Joseph L. Mackey 24, of 220 Egbert Street, Rocky Grove,
is in fair condition in the Franklin Hospital with multiple injuries
sustained when his Country Belle Truck he was driving upset near
Baskerville about 8:30 A.M. today. State Police of the Franklin
substation said the truck upset about a mile east of Barkeyville on
Route 208.
Mackey suffered a severe laceration of the head, back and
knee injuries. An Investigating officer said the young driver
lost control of the vehicle after it rounded a curve and went into a
skid on wet pavement." Mary Anne remembers her mother stating
that they tried to get Joe to sign a consent for treatment form before
they would do anything. He would have died if she had not
intervened. She said he had something like 76 stitches in his
head. He crawled out of his windshield and walked to a
neighboring house and rang the door. I am sure he scared the poor
lady that answered to death.
He worked for Armstrong Research and Developmental
Center. It is located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He is a
graduate of Armstrong Flooring.
Bass Master 1977
In the Reading Eagle Newspaper the following article
states " Bass Wants Action. There are 6,00 Pennsylvanians in the
Bass Anglers Sportsmen Society (Bass) covet Luker sized bass, perhaps
the most popular and fiercest fighting freshwater game fish. The
State Association is made up of 39 smaller clubs and the number is
growing. 'We're fishing mostly for fish we think are a littler harder
to catch than stocked trout,' Said Joesph Mackey Sr., State Bass
President. 'It's more of a challenge. We go out for the
sport of it and have a good time. But we're very concerned with
environmental problems, too he added.....'The larger the organization
the Better off we are to stop pollution. The more members we
have, the more lobbying power we have.' said Mackey by phone from hi
Lancaster home. Bass fishing has always appealed to Mackey.
'When I was trout fishing, I got tired of the shoulder to shoulder
crowd on opening day and the inconsideration. So I said to
myself, I'm going to get a boat and get away from it all,' he
Said....'We've gone into lakes that people said were dead, where no
fish were supposed to be, and pulled in linkers. Since we put
everything back, it's like a living advertisement,' Mackey Said."
Joe wrote a Boy Leader Training Course for Patrol
Leaders, for the Lancaster-Lebanon Council #524, Boy Scouts of America
, Southern District. Submitted June 9, 1981. A copy is in
Joseph's file. Distinct Council Awards. Qualifications of Joseph
L. Mackey Sr. "Joe began his scouting career in Rocky Grove,
Pennsylvania, Venango County with the former Colonel Drake Council as a
cub scout in the local club pack #30. He graduated into Boy Scout
Troop 28 and remained a scout until 1953 or 1954. Joe served in
many troops positions while in the troop under Scoutmaster Walter (Bud)
Deeter. Joe has earned the highest award in scouting, the rank of
"Eagle." From 1959 thru 1966, Joe served as scoutmaster of Troop
28 in Rocky Grove. At this time he relocated to Lancaster,
Pennsylvania, and was inactive in scouting for the next 12 years.
In 1978 he became a Webelos Leader in Cub Pack 268,
Millersville, Pennsylvania. He actively served in this position
for one year and then took on the position of scoutmaster in Troop 268
from then to present. While serving as Scoutmaster, he has been
maintaining a full active scout program for the troop, keeping close
personal contact with the boy's parents, and having active Troop
Committee. To ensure the troop has received the proper program,
he has taken the proper steps toward receiving adult training.
Joe has taken the Adult Leader Training Course which he completed in
October 1979. He also completed the Wood Badge Course NEV-59-9 in
August 1980 and is currently finishing his Ticket. He is an
active participant in district events and currently serving on the
Southern District Roundtable Staff and the Southern District Adult
Training Committee as an instructor. He is the Southern District
Family Enrollment S.M.E. Chairman for 1981. Joe was taken into
the Order of the Arrow in 1950 and became a Brotherhood member in
1951. He is currently serving as the O.A. Membership Committee
Southern District advisor for the Wunita Gokhos Lodge Lancaster Lebanon
Council. In addition to the preceding activities, he has been
accepted as and is filling the position of 1st Assistant
Scoutmaster to the Lancaster Lebanon Council contingent, Troop B, to
the 1981 National Boy Scout Jamboree at Fort A. P. Hill, Virginia.
Council records should speak for the increase in Troop 268 membership
since Joe has taken over. Troop active membership has more than
tripled. The troop's outdoor program is very strong, and we just
recently received the National Camping Award. Joe encourages all
boy leaders in the troop to get as much training as possible and has
initiated the troop training program each year. He received
Scouters Training Award 1981, and Scouters Key 1982.
To further aid the troop, we are in the process of
transferring two deaf/mute boys into it. In order for Joe to be
able to communicate properly with these boys, he is taking the American
Sign Language Course given by the Deaf Services Center and giving
instructions to the boy members of our troop so they will be able to
communicate with these new boys. The final
qualification of scouting we will list at this time is that Joe was
very instrumental in working to form the new Troop 88 in
Millersville. Working closely with Gary Ruffhead and the other
interested persons of Grace United Brethren Church, he succeeded in
getting this troop started. In 1982 he was on
District Roundtable Commissioner Lancaster Lebanon Council. The
District Training Chairman Lancaster Lebanon Council in 1982. In
1980/81 he designed the Boy leader Training (BLT) course accepted by
Lancaster Lebonan Council and put into local council use. It was
accepted by the National Boy Scout Association office in 1981 and is
now accepted course used nationally. In
community and civic affairs, Joe has also been active. He was the
person who started a local fishing club, The Conestoga Bassmasters of
Lancaster County in May of 1972. This chapter is chartered and
affiliated with the the National Organization Bass Angler Sportsman
Society (B.A.S.S.), Montgomery, Alabama. He served in various
positions in the local chapter as Vice-President and President,
and in 1979-80 was instrumental in starting the local 'youth' chapter
with the same organization. He also headed this program which has
gone statewide and was so successful it now has grown covering the
entire Northeastern United States with youth chapters in Massachusetts,
New York, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania Bass Chapter Federation in
1975 and President of that organization in 1976, 1977, and 1978.
He also served on the National B.A.S.S. award for Public Relations in
the Bass Angler Sportsman Society in 1977. Through his efforts
and response with the Pennsylvania Fish Commission's 'Conservation
Service Award,' which is only given to very few groups in the
state. Locally, Joe has served on the
Millersville Midget Football Committee and assisted in their youth
program. He also served as an assistant baseball coach for the
West End Athletic Association actively supporting their summer baseball
program. In scouting hr received Lancaster Lebanon
Council #524 Southern District Sunny South Award 8-81. He
received B.S.A. Woodbadge 9-81 (NEV 5-59). He received the highest
award in boy scouting the silver beaver. He became a member of
Charles M. Howell Lodge 496 F. & A.M. in March 1981. He
entered apprentice Mason First Degree 1981, Fellow Craft Mason April
1981, and Master Mason third degree June 1981"
He is a Mason to the 32nd degree like his Uncle
Harry, Uncle Jim and his grandfather Joseph. Hi All, here's another
update for you. I hope they are not too boring.
e-mail 2001-- Anyway I had two appointments today, One to have
the pacemaker checked and get the devise that will be used to monitor
it over the phone twice a month , modern technology is amazing. The
second was to put on a holter Monitor to monitor the heart for 24
hours. not sure why the monitor except I found out yesterday that my
pacemaker procedure wasn't as easy and straight forward as i had
thought. I knew I had trouble coming out of the anestesia and I should
have been back to my room by 10:00 in the morning. I didn't get bac
there until 3 or 4 in the afternoon and was still having problems
coming out of it. Like I said I was not aware of any of this and so I
felt everything went smoothly. I also found out that while I was in
surgery my heart had stopped and of course there was great concern
there as well. I
>was also told that when I was in recovery I was having
complications and because of this they permitted Marg and pam to stay
with me in the recovery room because of the uncertainty of what was
going on with me. well as I said I was unaware of all of this and until
yesrday I had thought it was
>pretty simple and I had no problems. That it was a snap and nothing
to it. Anyway all appears to be working very well now. I know i haven't
felt this good in a long time. people are telling me I look very well.
i'm driving again, thank goodness. Doing the exercises I'm supposed to
do every day and
>just waiting until I can do everything as normal as I used
to. well that's about it for now. Everything is Great and if
there are any changes I will keep you posted. Until then please keep in
touch and I'll do the same.
>Thinking of you all daily. Jor

Notes for LARRY SAMUEL MACKEY:
Larry was born in the Oil City Hospital. His mom and dad
had to take a buss and his dad was afraid that they would not make it
to the hospital on time and the baby would be born on the buss.
He was baptized at Rocky Grove United Presbyterian either June 8, 1945
or June 8, 1947. The church records aren't legible on the year.
He was raised Presbyterian but is now United Methodist. Larry
joined the Presbyterian church by confession, July 12, 1959 Rev.
Morehead was the minister and Leo Richards clerk of session.
In 1957 the following information appeared in the
Oil City Derrick Newspaper. "The Franklin YMCA held its annual
banquet last night honoring its sports champions of the year.
Jack Berger, public relations chief of the would be National League
champion Pittsburgh Pirates, was the featured speaker. Y physical
Jim Hedglin presented the awards and trophies to the following:
Larry Mackey of the CPT Industrial League Basketball
Champions." A copy of the news clipping is in his file
Larry is involved in sports but BASKETBALL is where his
joy and talent lie. At Rocky Grove High School Larry lettered in
Basketball, Baseball, and Track. "The Senior Class of Rocky Grove
High School announces it Commencement Exercises Thursday evening, June
seventh Nineteen Hundred and sixty-two at eight o'clock in the Rocky
Grove Auditorium in Franklin, Pennsylvania." His announcement is
in his file.
He was at Lackland Air Force Base for basic
training. His address was AB Larry Samuel Af 1377 3004,
Flight 1491 Box 1509, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He was on a
specialty team for the U.S. Air Force basketball team and traveled all
over the country doing clinics but the Vietnam war interrupted his
career. He was E- 4 Airman first class. He continued to play basketball
after discharge and officiated in his home town when he returned
home. He is a legend at Rocky Grove High School where he is
considered the best shooter to have ever played basketball there.
He has organized many different tournaments through the Franklin
YMCA. He started the the three on three tournaments and the High
School All Stars Tournament. He plays in the Orioles
alumni-faculty exhibition games. He has played against the
Pittsburgh Steelers on more than one occasion. He has played
against the Harlem Globe Trotters. His sister Mary Anne and their Dad
went to see Larry play. Meadowlark Lemmon kept picking on them
inn the audience. He pretended that he was going to throw a
bucket of water on them but in the end it was confetti. He
has raised thousands of dollars for community projects.
Larry was stationed in Alaska during the Viet Nam
War. He sent a picture of a large plug from the Sourdough
Sentinel. Under the picture it states: "Legend has it that
Shemya Island, on the very end of the Aleutian chain will sink if this
plug is pulled, and that someday someone will find the wind and the
rain and the fog and the cold so completely impossible he'll pull
it. Shemya is the site of one of the sensor stations in USAF Air
Defense Command's satellite-tracking Space track System. Operated
by Detachment 2 of the 2nd Surveillance Squadron, the site's detection
and tracking radars are part of the global network providing data on
all man made objects in space to the North American Air Defense
Command's Space Defense Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The
island has almost constant overcast conditions; and winds as high as
100 knots are not uncommon. Fog persists through the summer
months, with snow, sleet and rain daily during the winter. But no
one wants the island to sink - so the story goes
-- hence the heavy chain linking the plug to a post to make it
stay there."
Franklin News Herald "Laffs fill Grove Gym There was
quite a few laughs on the Rocky Grove hardwood last night as the highly
touted Alumni was thoroughly trounced 83-71, by a combination of
teachers AND booster club members. Even though the final point
spread was only 12, the teachers were in complete control throughout
with their fine offense and strong board. The fans were treated
to some fine shooting exhibitions from some yesteryear players such as
Larry Mackey and Had Ward, and couch Chruch Marin. Mackey hit
from the outside almost at will for six field goals, while Marin hit
for `6 points in the second half to spark the teachers. One of
the highlights of the contest was some fine outside shooting from
booster club member Had Ward, one of the stern of a past Rocky Grove
championship club, who had the entire crowd dazzled with his
accuracy. He was also involved in the highlight of the evening
when he the a pass into the head of team member Chruch Shankel.
The Alumni could only manage two players in double figures,
Mackey with 12 and Walkowski with 10; but their key was balanced
scoring attack. Outscoring the teachers in field goals, the
alumni lost the game at the foul line." Larry Mackey also played
in the second annual Alumni contest. The proceeds went to the
Booster Club for athletic equipment. Larry was involved with many
fund raises in the community that supported youth activities.
Especially for the Franklin YMCA. He started a Basketball
competition that grew to bring many players. When the YMCA
started excluding kids and not putting the money back in the community
for the kids Larry quit doing the fund raising for the Y. He is
correct standing up for his morals that the YMCA should be open to
everyone.
Larry owned a Tropical Pet Shop in downtown
Franklin. His picture was in the News Herald Newspaper
"Larry Mackey, owner of Mackey's Tropical Fish and Pet Supply, is seen
with some of his stock of fish, mice and birds. Mackey recently
purchased the store, located beside Ed's Camera Shop and the Park view,
and introduced the pet supply to go along with the tropical fish.
Mackey says he can get almost any pet imaginable within two weeks to
order, to complement what he carries in stock. He also sells
equipment for aquariums and foods and vitamins for pets. The store will
be open from noon until evening but Wednesday and Sunday."
Larry drives for United Parcel Services.
Larry's picture along with he YMCA Volleyball Team
appeared in the Franklin News herald. "The team will be
participating in the Youngstown Tournament of Steel to be held Saturday
at the Youngstown YMCA. There are eight teams entered in the A
bracket including Franklin. In addition to Franklin, teams have
entered from Columbus, Youngstown, Cleveland, Bowling Green, Middleton,
and Wooster, Ohio and until 7 P.M. Team members are back row from
the left - Couch Buzz Rembold, Larry Mackey, Denny Brown, Bruce Miller,
and Dave Dower. Front row from left - Herb Bigley, captain Tom
Bable and Larry Grill. In past tournament action, Franklin capped
a second place in the Salem, Ohio first place." A copy of the
News clipping is in his file.
Larry was involved in a softball Tournament, when his
father was in the hospital, called the Clarion Invitational, Class B
and C. His team Tom's Food won the tournament. It was
dedicated to Larry's dad who was in the hospital. This appeared
in the Franklin News Herald on Monday June 28, 1982.

In the September New Hearld Front Page. "Quick.
Larry Mackey has always been about quick. On the basketball
floor, where his prowess as a shooter is legendary, it was a quick
release on his patented jump shot that set him apart. On the
court, on the street or on the job that set him apart, he was likewise
quick - with a quip- keeping up a running commentary with those he
encountered.
'Quick' is also the appropriate word to describe his 30 year
career as a driver for United Parcel Service, where the clock was
always ticking and the customers were always waiting.
But things are about to slow down. The man whose boss
calls him 'the mayor of Franklin' is calling it quits. When he
concludes his rounds today, Mackey will officially retire from UPS.
That retirement will be felt throughout the Franklin business
district where Mackey and his familiar brown truck were daily visitors
- 80% of his day involved recurring stops. By being in a small
town, he says he really got to know his customers.
'You get to know where the people work, what their kids do, ' he
says 'Sometimes you hear their problems.' With a chuckle, he adds, you
don't want to hear their problems!'
Mackey says he knew a great number of people when he started the
UPS job, having been 'kinda in the limelight' due to his sports
successes, and the numbers have mushroomed since then. He
seemingly knows everyone, offering a thought or a wisecrack to anyone
who crosses his path. They respond in kind with an easy banter that
comes only with familiarity.
But despite those many relationships, Mackey says it is time to
go, and he feels no sadness, 'I'm looking forward to it. I'm
ready to move out.'
He leaves with more than 30 years of continued service.
After graduating from Rocky Grove High School in 1962, Mackey
serves four years in the Air Force. Asked what his duties were,
he laughs and says, 'Same dumb thing I do now.' He delivered parts.
Mackey says he volunteered to serve in Vietnam, but was
shipped to Alaska instead, and ultimately spent time in Massachusetts
and Texas as well.
After the service he had a couple of other jobs before finding
his way to UPS in 1970. A driver for all his 30 plus years with
the company, he can point to many major changes during his tenure.
When Mackey started, UPS served 22 states. Now the company
delivers in almost 300 countries.
One improvement came when the drivers no longer had to load
their own trucks. Offsetting that advantage were changes in
weight limits. In the Seventies, there was a 50-pound limits on
packages, and customers were limited to 100 pounds a day. Today,
the maximum is 150 pounds per package and there is no limit on the
number.
UPS also is fully computerized. Its drivers carry a
computer pad that allows them to log deliveries and keep in touch with
the home office in Seneca.
Yet some things haven't changed.
'The bottom line...is the people facing the public are the
drivers. That's all done by hand,' he says.
And all those deliveries take time. Mackey says he starts
at 8:30 A.M. and is generally off the clock by 6:30 or 7 P.M.
Overtime is given for everything over 8 hours a day, and drivers are
seldom if ever scheduled for less than 91/2 hours.
During a typical workday, Mackey made between 110 and 130
deliveries, plus 20 pickup stops. He delivered between 250 and
300 packages, and picked up between 100 and 300 packages.
And always there has been that pressure to get the job done-and
done on time. In that regard, UPS has been a hard company to work
for, he says.
'You've got to run 17, 18 stops per hour your day,' he says.
'You've got to run your day,' he says. 'You've got to keep on moving.'
And that's all the time.
'You have to make the same time whether it is snowing, raining
or whatever.'
Yet despite all the years and all the miles, Mackey's safety
record is nearly spotless. He had one minor scrape during his
first year on the job, but has been accident free ever since. He
became a member of the company's prestigious 'Circle of Honor'
after passing the 25-year mark.
Mackey is quick to add that the company shares some of the
credit. He says UPS has a very good safety record and
teaches driving and safety methods to all of its drivers.
Not everything that has played out along Mackey's route is in
the handbook however.
He remembers a time when he performed CPR on a women, on Liberty
Street in Franklin, and says he has been on the scene of numerous
accidents.
Then there are the questions asked ten times a day, someone
stops to ask directions. His favorite is where is the Franklin
Mint?
And Mackey's eyes Sparkle when he tells of an occasional
snowball fights he has had.
It seems that the familiar brown UPS trucks are a favorite
target of young snowballers. Rather than take umbrage, the
puckish Mackey takes action.
Preparing for anticipated attacks, Mackey has occasionally
stopped his truck a few blocks away and made 40 or 50 snowballs.
When the snowballs were launched in his direction Mackey's youthful
tormentors were taken aback when he came out of his truck throwing.
'By the time they realize what happened, you're gone. ' He
laughs.
While many diversions along the way have made his job
interesting, Mackey says there has been one constant - the steady
physical strain.
'I've been lucky to keep my health,' he says. 'I haven't had any
major problems;.'
The constant lifting and the walking three to four miles a day
have kept him in excellent shape. That, in turn, has kept him on
the basketball court.
A standout at Rocky Grove High School, Mackey still holds the
school record for points in a game - 44- in a Y-Tournament game played
at the old Franklin High School.
IN the Service, he played a great deal - getting rare
opportunity to play in Boston Garden and Madison Square Garden and to
participate with Bob Cousy in a clinic held in Boston College.
His memories of Boston Garden include signing autographs for
adoring youngsters - 'when you know you're nobody!'
Mackey also played against such diverse teams as the Harlem
Globetrotters, the Texas Redheads, the Pittsburgh Steelers and a team
for a wheelchair league. Playing the game from a wheelchair was
quite an Experience
He also played on a traveling team out of the Franklin
YMCA. He rattles the names of several teammates, including Scott
Walters, Pat Lukasavich, Dan Gallegos, Larry Holly, Jim Hedglin, Jay
Davis and Jim Davis.
'We'd go anywhere, anytime, to play.' He chuckles.
Today his game is limited to the over 35 league at the Y.
There, he days, the other players tease him about having lost his
moves, something he vehemently denies. 'I never had any.' He laughs
Known for his quick release and deadly accuracy Mackey can
apparently still shoot.
'Oh yeah, they still gotta guard me or go home early,' he
chortles.
Mackey was also a track star in high school, and shares the
school record in the mile relay with Denis Weeter, Larry Graham and
Lanny Rodgers.
His pedigree includes stints as manager of assorted baseball and
softball teams, and he played volleyball in the service and
later. In fact, he once looked across the court at the
intimidating presence of Wilt Chamberlain.
'I've rubbed elbows with a lot of All Americans and professional
athletes just by participating in the stuff, and it was thrill to meet
people who were best at what they do.'
Mackey has rubbed elbows with plenty of people through the
years. Now he heads off In a different direction, promising to 'at
least look at' a 'honey so' list from his wife Shirley.
He plans to drive a school bus part-time, and will get back into
some activities that he abandoned because of time constraints.
Visiting their four children (Jim, Mark, Dee Dee and Mistie' is high on
the list, and getting involved with his church youth group again is
likely.
It is also likely that Mackey will continue to follow the credo
he had while working at UPS.
'I carry on wherever I go,' He says.

Notes for SHIRLEY MAE CLARK:
Shirely used to do Dorothy Mae Morehouse Mackey's hair years
before she met and married Larry.
Shirley was the foreman at Conair when she met and married
Larry. She is Free Methodist. They now both belong to Luper
Chapel United Methodist Church near their home.
Her parents names were William Clark and Martha
Wertz.
Shirley reminds Mary Anne of Reba McIntire the country
singer. I think they could be twins.
Shirley took her mother into her home and cared for her until
she died. She was bedbound. Shirley enjoys working for
older adults. She spent a long time caring for Aunt Kitty before
and after she went to Venango Manor. She continues to help the
elderly by cleaning homes at the high rise in Franklin.

Pennsylvania 16301. She married ORAH DWIGHT SHAFFER July 11, 1970
in Franklin, VenangoCounty, Pennsylvania 16323, son of ROBERT SHAFFER
and CLYDIA BURKHART. He was born December 12, 1949 in Franklin,
Venango County, Pennsylvania 16323.
Notes for DOROTHY ELIZABETH MACKEY:
Dorothy was born at the Oil City Hospital and was delivered by
Doctor Hadley. He is the doctor that saved her mother's life when
she was burned.
Dorothy graduated from Rocky Grove High
School. She looks most like our mother. Mary Anne remembers
when our grandmother was sick. Mary Anne and Dorthy went with
their mother to see her at Garmong Nursing Home in Oil City. When Lena
saw our mother she thought it was her mother Clara. When she saw
my sister Dorothy she thought it was her daughter Dorothy.
She went to Clarion State College. and graduated
with a Bachelor of Science in education with a minor in Library
Science. She proved that even though we were poor we could
go to college convincing our mother that Mary Anne could go to college
as well.
Mary Anne has always considered her sister more
beautiful, smart, and sophisticated. Dorothy even though
only five years older did many things for Mary Anne that a parent would
do. She became Mary Anne's girl scout leader, taught me how
to drive, let me use her car, gave me a suprise 16th birthday party,
helped me buy my first car. She has been there for me in all my
triumphs and trials in my marriage and the birth of my
children. Mary Anne has a great deal of respect and love
for her sister Dorothy. Mary Anne's kids consider them twins when
they are together. Mary Ann's kids think they look, act and sound
alike. When we are together for awhile we answer each others
sentences and laugh, not just a tivial laugh but the good old belly
laughs that make you have to pee. Our kids call us a stereo
system when we are together.
She is a supervisor for head start in Crawford and
Venango County. She went back to school and received her
Bachelors Degree from Slippery Rock College in special
education. She has many credits toward her Masters Degree.
She is a specialist in attention deficit Disorder and Dyslexia.
She was asked to be on the Governor's Council in Harrisburg for
children with disabilities but was unable to do so because of her
health.

"In 1975 Mary Anne was at her sister Dorothy's
house. She was horse back riding with her friend Shelly
Russel. Mary Anne was riding Dorothy's horse Lucky. Mary
Anne swatted a fly and the horse took off at full gallop. Mary
Anne's foot came out of the stirrup. Her neck was probably broken
before she hit the ground. Her foot was still in the other
stirrup and the horse pulled her further before her foot came
out. She fractured her back between her shoulders, fractured her
neck, broke her Left pelvis, and had a complete fracture of her left
arm between her shoulder and elbow. She was not put in a body
cast but had to sleep almost sitting up for six weeks. It was
over a year before she was able to be considered fully recovered.
She damaged the nerves in her left arm which hurt if someone taps her
arm. But the doctor had only given her a 50% chance to ever be
able to use her arm again. A little nerve damage can be lived
with. She also had some nerve endings damaged in her left
ear. It caused a little hearing loss but caused a great deal of
problems with vertigo. Her family calls her their natural
barometer because she can tell if a storm is coming or if the weather
is going to change because she becomes dizzy. She didn't really
realize how God had blessed her with healing until she saw the movie
about Joni Erickson a Christian Artist who was paralyzed after a
swimming accident. If Mary Anne's fracture had just been a
fraction of an inch in a different direction she would have been in the
same situation. Bill and Mary Anne saw this film in 1980 in Fort
Morgan, Colorado. God has blessed her daily since that time
as a witness of prayer and healing to those around her. Mary
Anne's sister Dorothy was pregnant at the time and Mary Anne was so
afraid that Dorothy would loose her baby. She had lost her first
one. Dorothy's sister Wildamae drove. Mary Anne was also
worried about her underwear. Their mother was always concerned
that they had on clean underwear when they went out. Mary Anne
kept telling Dorothy to tell their mom that she had not only clean
underwear but new ones on to boot."
Her mother Dorothy kept a list of the trips to the emergency
room and other sundries. "Aug 3, 1958 foot in bicycle emergency; March
10, 1965- tonsil removed Dr. Anderson; Nov 30th, 1967 x-rays on my back

Too." The music is in her file. Here are the words; " I
felt your touch last night. It went deep inside of me. And
I trembled. Did you feel it? You must have, 'cause you
trembled. I saw your smile last night. It was soft and
warm.. It touched my heart. It will last because it made me
smile. I heard your laugh it penetrated my soul! You love me and
I know it... I see it in your face. I feel it in your
touch. I see your feelings in your eyes. And I thank
you for not hiding your love for me which I see there. I
LOVE YOU TOO!!"
Mary Anne started a charge united methodist women in
the Manor Hill Charge. It brought four churches together into one
group call the Rebekah United Methodist Charge. It is the only
one of it's kind in the United Methodist Church. It was founded
in 1984. Her husband served the Manor Hill Charge from 1982-1985.
Bill and Mary Anne were involved with the United Methodist
Clergy couple Convocation held in New Windsor, Maryland in September
1986. We helped to write legislation for the General
Conference. We were very active in the clergy couples group in
Central Pennsylvania Conference of the united Methodist Church and
worked hard to try and make the organization into a National one.
Mary Anne was a Mother's Day Honoree Mother of the
year selected by United Methodist Women at Catawissa First United
Methodist Church, May 13, 1995. Her husband wrote the story that
was read. A copy of it can be found in her file. He did
really well with only a few small mistakes. Her family presented
her with a mother's ring. It is made of four hearts. The
two on the top are a bluish green for Josh and Amanda's birthday,
Sarah's is on one side and is a light green , last is Bill and Mary
Anne's which is emerald green. There was a chalk artist that drew
a Bible on a table. Mary Anne has had it hanging in her dining
room and living room. It was such a wonderful Surprise.

because his wife had been with him all the way. After that
several Ordinands hugged their spouse first. Also when it was
time to take vows. One of the questions was that the new Elder
would not be in debt. Bill said to the Bishop that in good
conscience he could not say that after just graduated and having so
many student loans. The Bishop changed the answer to say With

55. i. JOSHUA DAVID8 WISOR, b.
December 18, 1981, Washington, Davies, Indiana/Washington,
Daviess Co., IN.
ii. AMANDA MAE WISOR, b. December
15, 1983, Huntingdon, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.
Notes for AMANDA MAE WISOR:
Amanda was born at Huntingdon Hospital and was delivered by
mid-wives. Sue Baker was the mid-wife. Your birth was very
special to me.
My parents had died eight months a apart. My mother had
died two months earlier when I found out I was pregnant with you. Daddy
and I were on our way to take Josh to a circus. After going to
the circus we went to mom mom and pop pop pop Wisor. Mommy
was sick with you too. I lost 25lbs. The only problem was
that when I nursed you I gained the weight back.
Your daddy was very sick when I was about 8 months pregnant. He
was in the hospital for several weeks. He came home about
December the 9th your due date. On December the 15th in the morning
mommy had some pains. We went to see the mid-wife and she said I
was about 4 centimeters dilated. She told Daddy and I to go
shopping or for a ride. We went to a few stores and then daddy
decided to go for a ride.
This was a tradition with daddy for all three of you. He would
take me way out in the woods for a ride. There would be no houses
around. He would pick a back road where there were no
phones and take me on that road. Daddy and I went back by
Huntington damn and walked around. We saw a double rainbow and on
the way back mommy saw a black bear on the mountain. My pains got
worse so we went to the hospital. Daddy helped the mid-wife and
when she told him to pull my leg. You popped out on the bed.
Daddy got to hold you right away and then they took you to the nursery.
I didn't get to hold you until later when I fed you. You brought joy
back in my life after the death of my parents. You were always
smiling. You were born on Uncle Joe Mackey's birthday. I
called him and got him out of bed. You were perfect and still
are.
Amanda was baptized during one of the Mackey family
reunions so all the family could be there. Marquita and Jay Blum
your great aunt and uncle stood in for your grandparents. Amanda
was baptized at Rocky Grove United Presbyterian. This is the
church that Mary Ane Mackey-Wisor grew up in. It is the church
that Bill and Mary Anne was married. Amanda was baptized on
Sunday, July 1, at 10:45 A.M.
In March 1994 Amanda entered a beauty pageant in
East Coast Beauty pageant. She was a top ten finalist. She
won a trophy, a savings bond and the right to compete in nationals to
be held in Orlando, Florida.
On May 1, 19994 Amada received a certificate of
musical achievement form her teacher Rhona Wintersteen.
On June 12th, 1996 Amanda received an award
for outstanding achievement in Art as well as the physical fitness
award from G.C. Hartman Elementary Center.
iii. SARAH ELIZABETH WISOR, b.
August 23, 1987, Berwick, Columbia, Pennsylvania.
Notes for SARAH ELIZABETH WISOR:
Sarah is a name in the Bible that means Strength and courage to follow
God's command. We pray that Sarah will share that commitment to Jesus
Christ. Her middle name is in honor of her Aunt, Dorothy
Elizabeth Mackey Shaffer and her great grandmother Lena Elizabeth
Golden Foskey who share the same commitment as the biblical
Sarah. Elizabeth is in the Bible as the mother of John the
Baptist.
Sarah's doctor was Dr. Metha. Mommies water broke just as
daddy was leaving the house to preach at Hetlerville Church.
Mommy waited until daddy came home and we went to BerVahn Park where
Albright Church was having their service. Mommy sat in the car on
a towel and waited for daddy. Members of the church kept coming
to talk to mommy. After awhile mommy got impatient and honked the
horn and we went to the hospital. The doctor didn't believe me
that my water had broke but mommy knew. The doctor did a test and
realized mommy was telling the truth. It was about 1 o'clock in
the afternoon. Mommy still had no pains. At about 10
o'clock we walked around the hospital and Mommies pain started.
You were born before about fifteen minutes before midnight on
Aunt Barb's birthday. This doctor thought mom was going to
have twins just like the other two doctors before. I guess it
must because I got big so fast. Mommy was sick and lost 20 lbs
during the pregnancy. It seems that my system is usually
backwards. When you decided to make your entrance daddy and
I were alone in the birthing room and the nurses were talking in the
hall . It was the change of shift and very annoying to
mommy. I told daddy you were coming and the nurses said it would
be an hour yet. Daddy hollered they called the doctor and before
they came in the room you were on the bed. The doctor from the
emergency room was running to deliver you but he didn't make it.
Dr. Metha only made it to the parking lot. I love being
pregnant. You were perfect and you still are.
Sarah's kinder garden teacher was Mrs. Daily
1992-1993. She was in the P.M. class. Her Pre-First teacher was Mrs.
Rhoades 1993-1994. She was wonderful and Sarah favorite.
Her first grade teacher was Mrs. Foust. Her second grade teacher
was Mr. Horne. Her third grade teacher was Her fourth grade
homeroom teacher was. Her fifth grade homeroom teacher was Mr.
Wilson.

MOREHOUSE, LENA ELIZABETH5 GOLDEN, CLARA ELIZABETH4 VANCISE, MARY
HANNAH3 LINCOLN, DAVID2, ALFRED1) was born December 18, 1981 in
Washington, Davies, Indiana/Washington, Daviess Co., IN. He
married JENNIFER BEAGLE. She was born November 12, 1979.
Notes for JOSHUA DAVID WISOR:
"Daddy was in the kitchen working on a paper that was due for his
seminary class. Mommies water broke about 4 A.M. and daddy hollered
into the bedroom to " wait until I'm done." We called the doctor
and he told us to come to the hospital when the pains were
closer. Daddy went back to typing and mommy laid back on the
bed. At about 9 A.M. we decided that we better head to the
hospital. There was a snow storm outside. On the way to the
hospital mommy saw two Buffalo in some ones front yard. Daddy
didn't believe me. Later he saw them too! But he
still teases me to this day. When we got to the hospital an Amish
couple that had been in our birthing class had their baby in the car on
the way to the hospital. Dr. Coulter told us later that he
thought that it was you. He felt we should have been to the hospital
sooner. You were born a little after 1 P.M.
Joshua's doctor was Dr. Merlin Coulter. His office
was in Washingtonville, Indiana about thirty miles from Dover Hill
where we lived. Mary Anne loved being pregnant. It was the
first time in her life that she did not feel fat - just pregnant.
Being a mother is the most important job in the whole world. Mary
Anne had X-RAYS done on October 31st because the due date was November
5th. Josh was in position and you could see his bones next to
mine. Even so Josh was not born until December the 18th. The
doctor had moved the due date to December the ninth. Six weeks
before Josh was born her waist was 56 inches. Mother was sick during
the whole pregnancy and lost 45lbs. The doctor said that he would
induce labor on the 20th if you had not come yet. My dad's (Sam)
birthday was the 20th. Your great grandparents (Abe and Mabel
Wisor) wedding anniversary was the 17th. You were born between
these two special dates of family history.
Dr. Coulter kept kidding with us that you were
going to be twins. Twins run in both sides of the
family. After Josh was born, daddy who was present in the
delivery room and faints at the sight of blood, Dr. Coulter looked at
daddy and said: 'Here comes the second one.' Daddy almost
fainted. Josh was and is perfect.
After every visit to the doctor mommy would either
crave a Big Mac or Daddy and I would stop at Loogootte for Pizza at El
Greco. It's the best pizza you ever tasted. I think that's
why you like both of these. Mommy craved a lot of chocolate when
and you were brown when you were born. I asked the doctor if that
was because I had eaten so much chocolate." Written by Mary Anne
Mackey-Wisor
Josh graduated from Sunny Hill Pre-school in
Mifflinville, Pa., on June 9th, 1987. The director was Shirley
Ridgeway.
A picture of Josh and Pastor Dennison appeared
in the Press Enterprise News paper in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania on
