Notes for Jane Haskins:

The death of Mrs. Levi Carpenter occurred at the family residence in Ellery
Thursday morning. She had been confined to her bed for the past five months
and death resulted from the exhaustion caused from cancer. She was 81 years
old and had long been a resident of Ellery. On June 1, 1897 Mr. and Mrs.
Carpenter celebrated the 60th anniversary of their marriage. Besides the
husband, Levi Carpenter, she leaves five children: Mrs. A. J. Russell of
Manisteo, Mich.; Mrs. William Russell of Dewittville; Mrs. Henry Sherman of
New Orleans; Alanson B. Carpenter of Omaha, Neb.; and Orlando Carpenter of
Ellery.

Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter came to county in 1822 when Levi Sr. was 8 years old,

Herkimer Co. by the Erie Canal to Buffalo. The two families located near and
they married June 1837. Their wedding tour taken in a lumber wagon, drawn by
horses borrowed from a neighbor. Lived several years in a log cabin.

>From 1894 newspaper clipping: The funeral of David Haskin was held at West
Ellery Church, Saturday, Dec. 30, at 12 o'clock, services conducted by Rev.
Hotchkiss. Music was furnished by Dr. E. A. Scofield, Mrs. George Thompson,
Mrs. B. G. Haskin. The bearers were Oliver, Sidney, Warren and Israel
Haskin, M. H. Cheney and D. G. Wood. The interment was in Lewis Cemetery.

The Haskin name is sometimes recorded as Haskins.

Gravestones in Lewis Cemetery of the Haskin family were in fair condition in
1965.

died yesterday morning at 11:30 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G.
W. Thompson at Bemus Point. His age was 81 years, 11 months and 20 days.

granddaughter, Edith Haskin of Bemus Point, two brothers, Oliver Haskin of

Oliver Haskin died at his home in Bemus Point yesterday afternoon at 4:30
o'clock at the age of 79 years. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Cecella P.
Haskin; four sons, Fred G. Haskin of Bemus Point; Emmett Haskin of
Hartfield; William Haskin of Whittier, Cal.; Walter Haskin of Ellery; two
daughters, Mrs. Berdell Loomis of Bemus Point and Mrs. Goldie Hall of North
East, Pa. The funeral will be held at the Bemus Point Methodist Episcopal
Church tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon at 2:30 PM.

Nov. 14....Funeral services for the late Oliver Haskin were held at the
Methodist Church at 2:30 PM yesterday, preceeded by a prayer service at the
home. Rev. C. A. Williams officiated at both services and Bemus Point Lodge
No.585 I.O.O.F. also held its service both at the church and at the village
cemetery where the interment took place. Music was furnished by Mrs. Myrtie
Johnson, Mrs. Izora Thompson, Mrs. Leah Skillman and Mrs. Lena Haskin. The
bearers, all grandsons of the deceased were Harold Haskin, Oscar Loomis,
Earl Dake, Clarence Hooper, Howard Russ and Chester Mills. The
granddaughters carried the numerous beautiful floral offerings to the
cemetery and the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs attended as a body. Present from a
distance werre Mr. and Mrs. Chester Mills and son of Freeville, NY and
Charles Sill of Olean.

Claude D. Haskin, 84, of Maple Springs, died at 8 A.M. Sunday at his home.

He was a member of the Bemus Point I.O.O.F. 385, Chautauqua Encampment of
Jamestown and a charter member of Maple Springs Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Haskins is survived by a daughter, Miss Lucille Haskin, Phoenix, Ariz.;
a daughter-in-law, Miss Edith Haskin, Maple Springs; a brother, Charles
Haskin, St. Petersburg, Fla.; a granddaughter, four grandsons; and nine
great-grandchildren.

The body will be at the Evans Funeral Home, Bemus Point, until noon Tuesday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Tuesday from the Maple Springs
Community Church. Rev. Orville Wright of Providence, R. I. will officiate.
Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery.

Flowers are grateully declined, but friends may make donations to the Damon
Runyon Cancer Fund.

Claude D. Haskin, who took part in the invasions of North Africa and Sicily
and spent 21 months as a prisoner of war in Germany, died at 1 a.m. today,
May 11, 1962, in Jamestown General Hospial.

Mr. Haskin made his home in Maple Springs. The 40 year old World War II
veteran entered the hospital Tuesday to undergo abdominal surgery.

Mr. Haskin, an office employe of American Supply Div. of American Standard,
712 W. 8th St. was born Oct. 4, 1921 in Maple Springs, the son of Ralph and
Edith Lindholm Haskin. He attended Bemus Point High School.

Mr. Haskin enlisted Jan. 17, 1941 and was stationed at Camp Blanding, Fla.
before being sent overseas. As a private first class Co. B 26th Infantry,
First division, he took part in eight major engagements in North Africa and
Sicily including the battles of Kasserine Pass, Matteur, El Guetar, Bizerte
and Bedja.

Mr. Haskin was in the first company of troops to land on the shore of Sicily
July 18, 1943. He was taken prisoner of war that same month and sent to
Stalag 2-B in Germany, where he remained for 21 months. He was released in
April 1945.

His father, who also served in the war as a Sergeant, died Dec. 1943 in
Australia, while serving with the Quartermaster Corps.

Mr. Haskin was a member of the Bemus Point Church of God and the Maple
Springs Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Kesby Haskin; three daughters, Karen
Althea, Deborah Leah and Ina Christine, all at home, his mother, Mrs. Edith
Haskin, Maple Springs; three brothers, Ralph, Bemus Point, Gordon,
Youngstown, Ohio, and Richard, Brocton.

Services are to be held at 1 p.m. Monday from the Evans Funeral Home, Bemus
Point, with Rev. LeRoy Apotosh, officiating. Burial will be in Bemus Point
Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and
Sunday in the funeral home.

Richard Lee "Breezy" Haskin, 59, of Main Street, Brocton, died July 8, 1986
in Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk. He was born August 8, 1926 in
Jamestown, the son of Ralph Culver Sr. and Edith A. Lindholm Haskin.

A Brocton resident since 1959, he was owner and operator of The Print Shop
in Brocton and was a former printer for Northeast Breeze Publishing Co. and
Fredonia Office Supply and Printing. He was a veteran of World War II,
serving with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater and was a member of
Portland Congregational Church; John W. Dill Post 434, American Legion,
Brocton; Lakeshore Lodge, F.& A.M., 851; and Brocton-Portland Civic Assoc.
He was a life member of Southwestern Assoc. of Volunteer Firemen. Also, he
was an exempt fireman of Brocton Vol. Fire Dept. and a former member of
Buffalo House Printing Craftsman and Brocton-Portland Jaycees.

He is survived by his wife the former Dorothy G. Newell whom he married on
Oct. 23, 1949 and two sons: Bruce N. Haskin of Nashville, Tenn., and Brian
R. Nelson of Jamestown: two brothers, Ralph C. Haskin of Ellery Center and
J. Gordon Haskin of Elma.

He was preceded in death by a daughter Laura J. Haskin; and a brother Claude
D. Haskin.

Burial will be in Portland Evergreen Cemetery.

Dorothy G. Haskin, 70, of West Main Street, Brocton, died Monday (Feb. 12,
2001) in Brooks Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 11, 1930, in Dunkirk, the daughter of Karl and Eleanor
Dewey Newell.

A Brocton resident since 1959, she was a retired senior social welfare
examiner for Chautauqua County, where she was employed from 1969 ro 1992.
She was a member of the Brocton American Legion Post 434 Ladies Auxiliary, a
member and past president of the Chautauqua County American Legion Ladies
Auxiliary of Mayville, and a member of Chautauqua County Retired Employees
Association. She was a member of Chautauqua County 8 and 40 Salon 649,
director of the Chautauqua County Ladies Travel Group from 1978 to 1998 and
a former member of the Brocton Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

She was a loving grandmother.

She is survived by two sons: Bruce N. Haskin of Philadelphia and Brian R.
Haskin of Mayville, N.Y.; four grandchildren: Benjamin, Jacob and Patrick
Haskin, all of Mayville, and Laura Haskin of Philadelphia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard "Breezy" Haskin, whom she
married Oct. 23, 1949, and who died July 8, 1986; a daughter, Laura Haskin
in 1972; and a brother, Roger Newell in 1958.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Morse Funeral
Home, Brocton. The Rev. Jacqueline Rhodes will officiate. Memorials may be
made to the Brocton Volunteer Fire Department.

G. Herbert Ingerson, 89, of Heritage Village Health Care Center, formerly of
Mitchell Road, died at 2:40 a.m. Tuesday (May 15, 2001) in the WCA Hospital.
A native of Jamestown, he was born May 22, 1911, a son of George and Kate
Reardon Ingerson. He was a 1929 graduate of Jamestown High School and a
veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a 26-year employee
of Marlin Rockwell Corp., where he was a manager, retiring in 1976. He was a
member of the First Baptist Church and the Lakewood Senior Citizens.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Anderson Ingerson of the Heritage Village
Campus, whom he married Aug. 2, 1934, and a daughter, Marcia Ingerson-Wack
of Denver, Colo. He was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
A private chapel service will be held today in Sunset Hill Cemetery. A
memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday in First Baptist Church. The
Rev. E. Allen Rogers, pastor of First Baptist Church, will officiate.
Visitation will not be observed. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist
Church, 358 E. Fifth Street, Jamestown, N.Y., 14701. Arrangements are
handled by the Lind Funeral Home.
