Notes for JOSEPH BENTLEY:
Joseph and Azubah Brockway Bently of Renssalaer County, NY who migrated to
Ohio and then on to La Porte, Indiana in about 1830. Their youngest
daughter, Rozilla, is my great, great grandmother but she had many brothers
and sisters who were born in NY and Ohio. All of them ended up in
La Porte, Indiana. I would enjoy hearing from any of the descendants of:
Lucina Bently Ingalls, Laura Lavena Bently Shippee, Hannah L.Bently Sherman,
Joseph, Eliza Ann Bently Shippee, Rodolphus Ralph Bently, Orris G.
Bently, Hester Ann Bently, Irving A. Bently. They were all born between
about 1810 and 1833.

My great, great grandmother, Rozilla Bently Harrington, had her children in
La Porte but they all moved West. Perhaps some of her brothers' and sisters'
children stayed in the La Porte County area. I would love to hear from any
of the descendants. Charlotte Bailey Preston in San Diego

More About POLLY BENTLEY:
Burial: Buffalo Grove, now Buffalo Township and Polo, Ill

Notes for CHARLES WHEELER SAMMIS:
Mr. Charles W. Sammis was one of the first to settle on land near the lake,
which lands later, were included within the boundary of the Village of
Celoron, N.Y., when it was incorporated as a Village. He came to this
section about the year 1822 or 1823. Have not been able to ascertain the
exact time. He must have taken out articles on this land. There is no record
of the land having been deeded to Mr. Sammis by the Holland Land Co., so he
must have sold the articles to Jobe Barker, as he is the first owner on
record as receiving title to this land from the Holland Land Co. But Mr.
Samnmis lived here long enough to have the Point named in his honor, being
called Sammis Point, and the Bay was called Sammis Bay and the road from
Ashville Road (as it was then called) to the home of Mr. Sammis was called
Sammis Road (now Jackson Ave.) Sammis must have put this road through by Mr.
Sammis himself, this was the first road put through to what became Celoron.

Charles Wheeler Sammis was born in New York City, January 21, 1801, the son
of Ebenezer and Ruth Wheeler Sammis. His mother Ruth Wheeler was born
December 21, 1781, on Long Island. Have no record of when and where Ebenezer
Sammis was born. Mr. and Mrs. Ebenezer Sammis were married in 1799. Chas. W.
Sammis was the only child, as his mother died shortly after his birth and
she is buried in the Trinity Church Yard in New York City. It seems that
when Charles W. Sammnis became of age he set out to seek his fortune, coming
to this section where he met Polly Bentley, whom he married in 1824. Polly
Bentley, the second daughter of Uriah and Nancy Sweet Bentley, was born in
Rensselaer Co., N.Y., Oct. 1803 and they built a home and settled near the
lake in the western section of the Town of Ellicott. They lived here until
the winter of 1837-38.

Early historians say they had eight children, but relatives say they only
knew of seven, as follows: (l) Mortimer, born here Dec. 8, 1825, no record
of his marriage, but he had two sons, Herb and George. Herb Sammis died in
Polo, Ill. on Nov. 10, 1859. (2) Will, was also born here, but do not have
the date. He married and moved to Montana and is said to have had two sons.
(3) Mary, born here March 28, 1829, she married a Mr. McQuade with whom she
had one son, Will McQuade. After Mr. McQuade's death she married Chester
Williams. Mrs. Williams died April 15, 1918. She lived in Polo, Ill. (4)
Charles W. Jr. was born here Feb. 17, 1831. He married Emily a. Helm, May
25, 1852. She was born in Oneida Co., N.Y. Jan 9, 1834. They had seven
children, one of whom died in infancy. The others are as follows: Fred H.
born May 12, 1853; Inez born March 2, 1855; Grace born Aug. 12, 1861; James
Uriah born Sept. 13, 1863; E. Payson born Nov. 5, 1865, and Stata born Nov.
9, 1868.

(5) Oscar F. Who was born in Polo, Ill. Have no date of birth. He married a
Miss Bogue. They had two daughters, Sibyl and Helen both of them died. The
family lived in Pierre, S. D. (6) Sibyl was born in Polo, Ill. Oct 9, 1839.
She married Andres Hitt and they had two daughters, Margaret and Mary. (7)
Uriah the youngest was born June 20, 1846 in Polo, Ill. He did not marry. He
served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was taken prisoner and
died in Libby Prison, Feb. 22, 1865.

Early in 1838 the family of Charles W. Sammis moved west to Illinois. Do not
know just where but in March 1839 they moved to Buffalo Grove, now Buffalo
Township and Polo, Ill, where Charles W. Sammis died Feb. 20, 1848 and Polly
Bentley Sammis, his wife, died August 27, 1886.

The Sammis family were respected and highly esteemed by both friends and
neighbors alike.

Stephenson County, Illinois Genealogy

C.N. Bentley

C.N. BENTLEY, whose home is on section 21, Harlem township, is one of the
venerable figures of the pioneer gatherings of Stephenson county. It indeed
has few if any residents whose settlement antedates his own. He knows what
it means to open up a new country to civilization, and he is now living in
the peace and comfort that follows a long and useful career.

Eldred Bentley, the grandfather of the subject of this article, was born in
Rhode Island, but spent the greater part of his life in Rensselaer county,
New York, and died in Chautauqua county of that state in 1851, at the age of
ninety-three. His wife, Nata, was an own sister of that Ethan Allen, who
linked his name with fame beyond divorce in the capture of the fort at
Ticonderoga at the opening of the Revolutionary struggle. Eldred Bentley,
Jr., the father of C. N. Bentley, was born in Rensselaer county in 1793, and
died in Chautauqua county in 1843.

Mr. Bentley was born in Berkshire county, Massachusetts, July 24th, 1826,
and of his brothers and sisters mention is briefly made. John lives in
Winnebago county, and Eldred at Ellington, Chautauqua county, New York.
Louisa married Norman Carr, and died in Ellington in 1891. Jemima married
Mr. Jeffords, and died in Pennsylvania in 1896. Sarah died at Ellington
while still a young girl, and Nancy, who had become the wife of Mr. Ralph,
died in Chautauqua county in 1856.

Mr. Bentley married Alecta Smith in Fredonia, New York, in July, 1844. She
is a daughter of Jeriel Smith, who came to this county, settled in Harlem
township, and died in 1857. She bore her husband five children, and died in
October, 1889, leaving behind her precious memories as a wife and mother.
Their oldest son, Lewis, 1845, served with distinction throughout the Civil
war in the 46th Illinois Volunteer Infantry; and after the war returned home
in February, 1866, only to be killed by a vicious horse the following June.
Jane, 1847, became the wife of H. B. Price, a resident of Freeport, and died
in 1895, leaving three sons and two daughters. Alva was born in New York,
and was accidentally scalded to death after reaching Illinois, at the age of
twenty months. George J. who was born in Winslow, Illinois, is a lawyer of
considerable prominence at Cripple Creek, Colorado. Lydia, 1860, died when
four years old. Charles C. married Theresa Mulnix, and resides with his
father. He is the parent of five children. Violet Electa is the oldest,
Chloe the second child and Cecil N. and Charles C. are twins. Dewey, the
youngest child, bears the name of the hero of Manila.

Mr. Bentley is serving his twenty-fifth year as school trustee of his home
district, and his judgment on school matters is almost beyond question by
the people of the neighborhood. He has served four years as constable, and
highway commissioner one or more terms. It has never been in his mind,
however, to seek any kind of a political office beyond those local positions
that had to do most immediately with home affairs.

149. DEFOREST E.8 BENTLEY (PERRY G. JR.7, PERRY6, ELDRED5, JOHN4, GEORGE3,
WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was born February 26, 1854 in Ellington Chautauqua Co
NY, and died Aft. 1920 in Clay county, Texas Petrolia. He married ELIZA
TEMPLE. She was born Abt. 1856, and died Aft. 1920 in Clay CO Texas
Petrolia.

Notes for DEFOREST E. BENTLEY:
DEFOREST E. BENTLEY. Prominent among the Illinois colony of settlers in Clay
county, and energetic and upright as a citizen,
Mr. Bentley, in becoming a resident of Clay county, Texas, was one of the
colony above mentioned, and as advance man prospected the location and final
settlement at Thornberry. For himself he purchased a tract of two hundred
acres and at once began its reduction and cultivation in a modest, though
successful, way. Grain, stock and fruit growing employ him and his ambitions
and industrious family, and that they have done something toward beautifying
and enlightening Clay county all acquaintances are forced to admit.

While Mr. Bentley came to this state from Illinois, his native state is New
York and his native county Chautauqua. He was born near Ellington, February
26, 1854, of parents Perry and Sarah (Cartright) Bentley. The father became
a carpenter and followed the trade as a young man but turned his attention
to farming afterward and died in August, 1903, at the age of eighty- one
years. He was born in Renssaelaer county, York state, and went to Chautauqua
county as a boy. His wife died in 1866 and he then married Mary COX, by whom
he also reared a family and whom he also buried. His first children were:
Harvey, of Chautauqua county, New York; Clem, who died young; **Deforest E.;
Nicholas, of Michigan; Margaret, of Ellington, New York, and Estelle, who
died early in life. Of his second children, Ashley resides in Ellington,
Arthur died at East Liverpool, Ohio, by accident; Nellie married Herbert
CROOK and resides near Ellington and the same place is the home of Eugene;
Mildred, wife of Oscar NELSON, and Abbie who married a FRARY also abide near
that town.

The Bentleys are of English origin and the family is believed to be an old-
established one of New England, as it was either Connecticut or Rhode Island
that grandfather Bentley migrated to New York state.( **it was RI)
D. E. Bentley acquired only a common school training. He learned farming
from his father and started in life as such himself. At the age of fifteen
years he, by day's work, earned the money to buy a couple of calves and when
they grew up into an ox team he traded them to his father for his time. For
about six years he worked as a farm hand for wages and then rented land and
began farming as extensively as his limited accumulations would permit. He
started west in 1874 and stopped in Pike county, Illinois, where his first
earnest efforts may be said to have been made and where, as the head of a
family, his life work really began. He married July 4, 1876, and took his
wife to a rented farm. Their combined labor and sensible economy put them in
possession of a sum sufficient to establish them fairly comfortably in their
new place in Texas and it was to escape the severe winters of the north and
to acquire the cheap and fertile land of the Wichita country that induced
their removal south.

Mrs. Bentley was, prior to her marriage, Miss Eliza Temple. Her parents were
James and Sarah (Hawker) Temple, people of English birth, the former of
Lincolnshire and the latter of Devonshire. The father was born March 3,
1813, and died May 8, 1875, while the mother's birth occurred August 19,
1822, and her death October 27, 1886. They came to the United States about
1832. Their children were: Mary R., widow of Stephen Evans, of Griggsville,
Illinois; Elizabeth, of Bellplain, Kansas; Mrs. William R. Wallace; Mrs.
Bentley, and George F. Temple, of Abilene, Texas. Mrs. Bentley was educated
in the Griggsville high school and taught four terms of country school while
she was yet Eliza Temple. She is a lady of bright, active and alert mind and
has shown her belief in the efficacy and power of education over ignorance
by making personal sacrifices and enduring personal hardships for the sake
of providing her children with an advanced education.

Mr. and Mrs. Bentley have nine children, namely: Charles, born June 8, 1877,
resides near Chattanooga, Oklahoma; Margaret, born December 5, 1878, is the
wife of Martin Stubbs, in charge of the government's weather observations at
Galveston, Texas. Mrs. Stubbs took a four-year course in Fort Worth
University, where she met her future husband, one of the faculty of the
institution. His duties have been so distributed as to give Mrs. Stubbs an
opportunity for travel and she has visited the West Indies -- San Domingo
and Cuba -- and talks most interestingly of life and conditions there. She
and Mr. Stubbs were married June 5, 1902. Hattie, born December 7, 1880, was
educated also at Fort Worth, and taught in the schools of her home vicinity.
She was married August 22, 1905, to T. M. Runnells, of Illinois. She is now
living in Oklahoma and expects Lawton to be her home. Her husband is a
bright young man of good education and had been bookkeeper for a Chicago
firm, until failing health compelled him to go south. He is now in
connection with a lumber firm. Harvey, born October 31, 1882, is an
invaluable assistant at the family home; George, born March 21, 1888; Mary,
born February 21, 1891; John, born May 14, 1893; Lloyd, born November 17,
1897, are all members of the family circle.

The family of Mr. Bentley hold allegiance to the Methodist church. The
parents have taught their children the lessons of the bible where right
living and right action are set forth as cardinal principles of an upright
life. They have strong faith in the lief to come and do the Master's will by
fearing God and keeping His commandments.

July 30, 1917---- May 16, 2003

I knew a man that had a very kind and gentle manner.

I knew a man that I never heard a foul word come out of his mouth.

I knew a man that loved his wife more than anything else in this world.

I knew a man that cherished his grandchildren and loved his nieces and
nephews.

I knew a man that loved his son-in-law as his own son.

I knew a honest man, a hard working man...........one that came home every
night.

I knew a man that never left his house without kissing his wife good-bye.

I also knew a man that I never heard raise his voice in anger.

I knew a man that loved the country side, the mountains, the prairies, the
waterfalls, the deserts and the wonders of the world.

I knew a man that was "a teacher of geography". A man that taught me about
rivers, the Continental Divide, petrified forests, the geysers of
Yellowstone, and the Tetons of Wyoming.

I knew a man that loved his home and the red dirt of Oklahoma and the
Wichita Mountains more than anything else.

I knew a man that was an avid sports fan and National Geographic was his
favorite magazine.

I knew a man that went to war to defend his country.

I knew a man that would travel hundreds of miles to watch his grandchildren
play tennis.

I knew a man that caught squirrels in his back yard and then drove them to
the country to release them.

I knew a man with the bluest eyes that I have ever seen that could hug you
and hold you and tell you "I love you".

I knew a man that always, had a smile for me and a kiss on the cheek.

I knew a man that told me to bury him in "old pine box" because that was not
him lying there.

I knew a man that knew where he was going.

I knew a man that looked in my eyes before he died and said "I love you,
Hon".

I knew a man that I was so proud to call "Dad."
