The Bentley Family.

As early as 1679 we know that there was a William Bentley who resided in
Kings Town, Rhode Island, for history shows that he with 41 others of
Narragansett, sent a petition to the King praying that "he would put an end
to these differences about the government thereof, which hath been so fatal
to the prosperity of the place; animosities still arising in the people's
minds, as they stand affected to this or that government."

William Bentley was a currier by trade, and his name appears upon the town
record in various transactions. In 1687, Sept. 6, he was taxed 48. 6 1/2d.
In 1705 he had liberty granted by the town to set up a house, convenient for
carrying on of his currying trade. In 1712, Jan. 20, he deeded to his son
James 128 acres. In 1715, Nov. 1, he deeded to his son Thomas 11 acres
recently bought of widow Weathers and her son. In 1720 he died and his wife
Sarah and son Benjamin were appointed executors under his will. There were
bequests to his eldest son William, and also to sons James, and Thomas, and
Benjamin, and to his daughter Jane Whitmore.

So far as known all the Bentleys in America, who date back their ancestry to
a period prior to the Revolutionary War, are descendents of William Bentley,
Sr., of Rhode Island. Possibly he may have had brothers, but we have no
certain record of them. However there are some traditions that are worthy of
consideration, in which it is claimed that there were two or three brothers.

John D. Bentley, of Corry, Pa., writes: "My father and a son now living in
Boston, both of whom were at some expense and travel in tracing the name
back, claimed that there were three Bentleys, who came from England, one
settling in Rhode Island, one in Berlin, Rensselaer County, New York, and
one was an officer in command of an English regiment, which was quartered in
eastern New York and who returned to England.

Manuscript B477w. Handwritten, faded ink, uneven fragmentation to 5/8 inch
from former right edge of single sheet, writing of the last digit oe two of
some of the years is either on missing fragments or hidden by loose or
folded fragmenting particles along what is now an uneven right edge breaking
up in small particles, and writing extends from the top edge of the sheet to
the left and right edges of the sheet to 3/4 inch from the bottom of the
sheet of paper on which the writing appears. The first ten lines are
seperated from the last ten lines by two parallel horizontal-solid-lines 1/8

"William (1) Bentley was born about 1652 of Kingstown, and his inventory was
taken 11 Jul 1720 at Kingstown where his will was proved in 1720. Some
secondary sources allege that he was the son of an earlier William Bentley.
He married Sarah __________ who was born about 1656 of Kingstown and who was
mentioned in his will. No evidence has been found to support the claim made
by certain secondary sources that her maiden name was Liethfield."

"When in 1705 the town granted him liberty to erect his tan house (a tannery
for the making of leather), the land allotted for the purpose was not
apparently otherwise occupied. However, when the "vacant lands" were in 1709
"platted" and "laid out" to Captain John ELDRED from whom on December 14,
1716, William BENTLEY bought eight acres which included the tan house and
"garding" and on which he continued to live until his death in 1720 when it
fell to his youngest son Benjamin (2) as his inheritance.

Notes for SARAH ELDRED:
Was Sarahs 2nd marriage;

>From the unbublished manuscript of ELEANOR TRISMAN:

"SARAH ELDRED by her first husband (LEITHFIELD) had two sons, JAMES
LEITHFIELD and THOMAS LEITHFIELD, both freeman of North Kingston, Rhode
Island on Dec 21, 1696. Sarah's Mother was ANN LUMPKIN who was the daughter
of TAMAZINE _________ and WILLIAM LUMPKIN from Norwich, England, ANN LUMPKIN
was in New England by 1637 and she married WILLIAM ELDRED in 1647. Ann died
in October 1676."

See the book, "Genealogical Classification By Family Group Coding for
Descent From Common Ancestors", By Cameron Ralph Stewart, Vol. II, Pages
1726-1728 for evidence of Sarah's last name.

World Family Tree Ref # 369 Vol 36:
"Notes written in pedigree #369: " Regarding the identity of Sarah Bentley's
parents - those who propose Leithfield or Litchfield as her maiden name seem
to use the book "Persecutions of the Baptists by the Boston Church" as their
reference. What this book might contain to support their contention is
unknown to us. However, the dates they give and the insistence on the three
Williams as Grandfather, Father and Son theory, which is unsupportable, lead
us to believe there is nothing in this book to prove Sarah's parentage.

Those who believe she was an Eldred point to the testimony given by Sarah in
1718 concerning Samuel Eldred
dwelling on the land where his son John then lived fifty years ago (i.e.,
about 1668). She even mentioned that the
old road ran on the east side of the house (a fact supported by the
testimony of Henry Knowles). It would appear
that she was living in Rhode Island in or before 1668.

Since there is no known evidence to connect her to the family of Samuel
Eldred (and apparently her testimony did
not contain any language indicating a family connection with Samuel and
John) some searchers have decided she is the daughter of William and Anne
(Lumpkin) Eldred of Yarmouth, MA. She is said to be their 3rd (or 4th)
child,
born about 1650. At least one family researcher, Miss Eva Boone, had
received from another family historian, a
reference number for a marriage between Sarah and William Bentley. However,
they had no marriage date and our inquiries to Yarmouth regarding this
reference number produced no record. In addition, no connection between
William Eldred of Yarmouth and Samuel Eldred of Kingstown has ever been
proven - at least not as far as we are aware."

RHODE ISLAND BENTLEYS.
>From a chart issued some years ago by Joel Munsell's Sons, genealogical and
docal history publishers, of Albany, N. Y., we glean the only information we
have of the Bentley family in Rhode Island. From this chart it appears that
William Bentley, of Kingstown, R. I., signed the petition heretofore
referred to on page 4, on the 29th day of July, 1679. It is also stated that
his wife's name was Sarah, and that he died in 1720.

Thus far we have no Documentary Evidence or Distinct Traditions, connecting
these Rhode Island Bentleys with the New York and Pennsylvania Bentleys, but
the family names, dates of births, and all the surrounding circumstances (or
res gestae as the lawyers would say) indicate their kinship. If anyone can
prove the contrary, I would be glad to hear from him. William Bentley had
five children who are recorded in the Rhode Island chart as follows:

Notes for JAMES BENTLEY:
"Evidently not much is known about James Bentley. According to James Arnold,
a much quoted historian of Rhode Island, This James Bentley had other
children but 'names and dates burned off.' This may refer to James' will
which could have been one of the many documents damaged or destroyed by the
Wickford fire of 1870.
"In any event, there seems not to be agreement among researchers about the
little that is know of his family. some have given the daughter of his first
marriage as Hannah. Since his second wife was named Hannah it does seem
reasonable to assume a child named Hannah was from this second marriage."
[Hannah was a very common name during that period, so her name may have been
Hannah, with no reference to the names of his wives.]
"Those who give only 'daughter' of first marriage mention that she could
have been a 'Jane' who married in 1726.
"James was listed as a freeman in 1696.
In 1711/12 William and Sarah Bentley deeded land to son James.
In 1710 he served for 169 days in a military campaign against Port Royal,
Nova Scotia, in the War of Spanish Succession, known to the colonists as
Queen Anne's war.

5. BENJAMIN2 BENTLEY (WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1682, and died 1744. He
married PATIENCE RATHBONE, daughter of THOMAS RATHBONE and MARY DICKENS.
She was born November 14, 1690 in Block Island,New Shoreham,Rhode Island.

Notes for PATIENCE RATHBONE:

Thomas (Rathbone) was an influential citizen of Block Island and apparently
the most prominent of the five brothers. He was admitted as a freeman in
1684, elected a second townsman in 1692, and served as first townsman in
1700-1702. His fellow islanders elected him the island's deputy to the Rhode
Island General Assembly in 1700, 1703, 1705, and 1711, and again in 1730 and
1731 when he was past 709...
He owned considerable property on Block Island, and is referred to as
"Captain Thomas Rathbun" in the town records...
An indication of his wealth is shown in the inventory of his estate, which
listed 27 cattle, 210 sheep, seven swine, two horses and six Negro slaves.
Since census records show only about 20 Negroes on Block Island at that
period, it would appear that he owned fully a third of the slaves on the
island. An idea of the value of the slaves is given in the inventory,
which listed a male named Mingo, valued at 60 pounds; a boy named Quoming,
at 80 pounds; one woman at 40 pounds; and three "wenches" at 200 pounds
(about 66 pounds each)...

8. GEORGE3 BENTLEY (WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1702, and died 1802.
He married RUTH BARBER March 1722/23 in Rhode Island, daughter of MOSES
BARBER and SUSANNAH WEST. She was born June 23, 1705 in North Kingstown,
RI, and died September 21, 1755 in Stonington, New London Co.

Notes for GEORGE BENTLEY:
George lived in Westerly, RI, and for a short time in Rens. Co.,
NY. George was located (1723) on the Beaver River which is
located in the eastern part of Richmond, RI, not far from the
South Kingstown line, RI.
The General Society of Mayflower Descendants lists mother as
Mary (Eliot) Bentley . This is probably based on the account of
General Roliff Brinkerhoff, in "The Tribe of Benjamin" (* See below) who,
appears to have been in error in this case.
Marriage 1 Ruth BARBER b: 23 Jun 1705 in North Kingstown, RI

Note: On page 677 of a Family Bible dated 1810 owned by W. R. Bentley of
Berlin, Rensselaer County, New York lists the family record of "my father
George Bentley mother Ruth Barber" with all the children of this marriage,
including those children who died young. Those children who married have
their spouses listed, but there are no dates. However, those children and
their respective spouses who remained in Connecticut are correctly
identified. In the Connecticut probate papers of Ezekiel Bentley is a
document from John Barber Babcock, a nephew, "now resident of Albany County,
New York." Caleb, John, Mary and Abigail and perhaps others migrated to the
Albany area of New York.

More about George;
George Bentley Correction

"In the Book, "Tribe of Benjamin", by General Roeliff Brinkerhoff, 1897, we
find on p.4, the tradition of a George
Bentley who came from England and married Jane Carson, settling in Chester
Co., Penn. On p.8 there is mention of the above George Bentley and the
Bentleys who proceded him. It says this George was probably the son of
William2, of William1. This George is not the George3 Bentley of whom I
write. On p.9, Brinkerhoff lists his George Bentley's children as follows:

Children:
1. Shebazzer
2. House
3. Jeffrey
4. Absolom
5. Mary
6. Benjamin, b. 1757
7. Margaret, b. 1759

"My George3 Bentley (Wm2, Wm1) was a native of Westerly, R.I. Later, for a

lived. But not liking it, he moved back to Westerly, then finally lived with
son, George4 at Stonington, Ct. note: this information came from my cousin,
Arlie Bentley of Berlin, Rens. Co., N.Y., who in 1954 lived on the old Capt.
Caleb Bentley farm. Cousin, Arlie has in his possession the old Capt. Caleb
Bentley Bible.

I saw the Bible on May 31, 1953, later Arlie sent me a photostatic copy of
the first page which lists George3 Bentley, wife Ruth Barber, and their
children as follows:

1. John4 Bentley, wife "Phanie" Shaw
2. Mary4 Bentley, hus. 1. Joseph Babcock, 2. E. Weaver
3. Abigail4 Bentley, desceased at 12 years old.

name."

"George's3 eldest son John4 named one of his boys, Eldred5, no doubt, after
his ancestor, William Eldred. Refer to
Wm2 Bentley's will, given in this work, you will George3 named his sons
after his brothers, John, Caleb & Ezekiel. As far as is known, George3 left
no will and, as yet, no tombstones have been found to mark either his grave
or his wife's, Ruth Barber. So many of the early markers have disappeared
with time, especially those buried on farms.

Refer: "Old Homes of Stonington", by Wheeler, 1903, p.221 which tells of the
location of George4 Bentley farm."

"Caleb (3) Bentley (William (2-1)) was born about 1711 of Westerly son of
William Bentley (ba 1676) and Elizabeth [Gardiner ?] (ba 1680), and his will
was proved 7 Feb 1792 at Exeter. He married (1) 21 Jan 1738 at North
Kingstown
Dorcas GOULD who was born about 1715 of North Kingstown daughter of John
Gould
(ba 1682) and Elizabeth Gardner (ba 1686). He married (2) Tabitha GOULD who
was
born 12 July 1738 at South Kingstown daughter of William Gould (ba 1710) and
Penelope _________ (ba1712), and died after 3 May 1802 when Frederick
Chappel
was to care for her."

"In his will Caleb Bentley mentioned twenty children all by name except
for one deceased daughter who was mentioned only as the deceased mother of
the
testator's grandson Lodowick Taber. These children were named in 3 groups:
First five sons who had all received before and who were presumably his
older
sons and listed in order of their birth and are no doubt of his firsrt wife.
Second the 8 daughters of his two wives also presumably in order of birth;
all
but the youngest unmarried (when the will was dated 13 Jan 1790) daughter
Tabitha had received before. Third 7 sons who were no doubt younger than the
first 5 and in order of birth who were all named in one item and who jointly
received a farm. No death date for the first wife and no marriage date for
the
second wife have been found, and only 5 of the 20 children have known or
calculated dates of birth. Thus it is somewhat difficult to divide the
children between the two wives, to intersperse the girls amoung the boys,
and
to approximate the unknown dates of birth. The second wife was born 12 July
1738 and so may have been married by about 1756. She was certainly married
before 31 Oct 1765 when she signed the South Kingstown Land Evidence as wife
of
Caleb Bentley. The daughters have been divided so that Penelope is given to
the
second wife Tabitha since Tabitha's mother was named Penelope. This makes
the
mext younges daughter Waite a daughter of Tabitha which checks since the
second
wife Tabitha had a sister Waite. Finally, the next youngest daughter Sarah
appears to be Tabitha's since Sarah married Fredrick Chappell who was
assigned
to look after Tabitha in her old age, and it would seem that he would be
Tabitha's son-in-law rather than a son-in-law of the first wife. The son
Thomas
(who was one of the 7 presumably younger sons sho shared the tract of land)
was
born 24 Aug 1750 as calculated from his age at death, and he (called son of
Caleb of Exeter) was married 17 Sep 1769 which agrees with the calculated
birth
date and precludes a significantly later birth date for him. The next
younger
son Ezekiel appears to have been the Ezekiel Bentley who was called 45+ in
the
1800 Census and who died 24 Feb 1833 age 82 years and so was born in 1751.
It
seems very improbable that thses sons born in 1750 and 1751 are sons of the
second wife Tabitha who was born 12 July 1738, and they ate therefore
asigned
to the first wife Dorcas. The son Ebernezer named immediately after Ezekiel
in
the gift of the farm to the 7 younger sons has been assigned to the second
wife
Tabitha. It appears that the second son named Gideon was not born until
after
the death of the first son Gideon whose inventory was taken in 1773."

11. WILLIAM3 BENTLEY (WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was born May 29, 1735 in
Richmond, Washington, Rhode Island, and died September 20, 1800 in Troy,
Rensselaer, Ny. He married (1) ABIGAIL MILLEMAN April 21, 1754. She died
Abt. 1783. He married (2) PHEBE PAINE Abt. 1785. She died in Murdered by
William with an Ax.

Notes for WILLIAM BENTLEY:
Note:
William was known to be a Baptist Minister, which was not a popular religion
outside of Rhode Island. There is one reference to him as a "weaver."
However, in 1785, he was ordained in Bennington, VT, and there is evidence
that he served as a Baptist minister in Hoosic, Rensselaer Co., New York.
Note:
William was a party to numerous court actions, in few of which he emerges
the
winner. He was sued by his mother and step-father because he did not
maintain
her in a good decent manner during her natural life although she had signed
her
dower rights to him. He was sued later for debts by Eliphalet Jones in 1783
and Ismael Spink, and his property was confiscated by court order.
Note:
After Abigail's death about 1783, William married about 1785 to Phebe Paine,
daughter of Joshua Paine and Constance Paine. Phebe had been widowed twice
before, and had children by each of her two prior husbands. William and
Phebe had four children: John born 1787, Jonathan and David (twins) born
1790
and Joshua born 1792. Phebe's brother Barnabus wrote of the "horrid abuses
and inhumanity" of their marriage, which was brought to a conclusion October
23, 1799. On that day, William struck his wife with a shoemaker's hammer
on one of her arms which was broken in two places; she attempted to escape
and
had proceeded some way towards a neighbor's home when he overtook her and
struck her repeatedly with the edge and head of an axe on her head and
shoulders. She survived only a few hours.
Note:
William was tried and convicted. He was sentenced to hang, but died in
prison
before the sentence could be carried out. There is some evidence to suggest
that he took poison. In his will, William made his son Elisha guardian of
the
twins Jonathan and David, William Jr. was guardian of John, and William's
brother Benjamin was guardian of the youngest son, Joshua.
Note:
William3 (William 2,1) was descended from William Bentley who came to
Narragansett, RI, in 1671 on the "Arabella" and died about 1720. He married
Sarah Eldred or Eldridge. Alden Beaman, "A Line of Descent from William
Bentley
of Kingstown" in Rhode Island Genealogical Register, Vol. 10 p. 340,
erroneously states that William4 (Caleb3 William 2,1) married Abigail
Milleman.
This William was born about 1745 and would have been only nine years of age
when William3 married Abigail.

12. GREENE3 BENTLEY (WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was born April 23, 1741, and died
March 04, 1820 in Tioga Co.,Ny. He married DIANA STRAIGHT. She was born in
East Greenwich, Kent Co., RI.

Notes for GREENE BENTLEY:
DAR # 62370
Much of the following is excerpted from an article by H. A. Wisby Jr.
Greene Bentley Sr. is credited with being among the first settlers in what
is now the town of Veteran, New
York. The name of the town commemorates his and other settlers Revolutionary
War service.
Prior to the War of Independence, Greene moved his family to Warwick, Orange
County, New York. He is
listed in a roster of state troops in New York archives as: 'Green Bently' ,
Private, Wisner Regiment, Baly
Company. D.A.R. records indicate he was in the 4th Regiment of the Orange
County Militia. Whatever active
military service Greene or his unit may have seen is unreported. There were
battles fought in the area of
Orange county (at Tappen on December 07, 1776 and September 28, 1778. Also
at Tarrytown August 30,
1779 and July 15, 1781).
He (evidently) never made a claim for a pension or bounty land but this does
not mean he was not entitled
to these benefits.
His service was probably typical of that of most soldiers who were not
members of the regular Continental
Army but who fought for short periods, not far from there homes as the tide
of war ebbed and flowed across
the Colonies.
After the war he moved to the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania, scene of a
prolonged and bitter dispute
between the governments of Pennsylvania and Connecticut called the Pennamite
Wars. While searching
FTM's Web site for Bennetts, we came across of link to "Brigette's Home
Page". She very kindly had
submitted information regarding inhabitants of Union and Northumberland
counties, Pennsylvania. Listed at
Buffalo Twp. 1784 were some Bennetts and Green Bently. Another listing
between 1785 and 1786 for
Washington Twp. showed some additional Bennett's and Green Bently. Unsettled
conditions during another
flare-up of the Pennamite conflict caused Greene to bring his family back to
New York, arriving near the
present city of Wellsburg, in about 1788. The Bentley family shared this
unhappy experience with members
of the Bennett family, who also returned to New York.
The first Federal census of 1790 records Greene living in the town of
Chemung, Montgomery County, with
one son over age 16, one son under 16 and two daughters. His land included a
stream which is still (at least
at the time this article was written) known as Bentley Creek. In 1789 he
helped organize the Chemung
Baptist Church, lately known as the Wellsburg Baptist Church.
Incomplete records make it impossible to know why or when he moved to what
became the town of
Veteran. The date was probably between 1796 and 1798, when he built of log
cabin west of Catherine Creek
in the present city of Millport, Tioga County. One of his holdings was a 123
acre plot, bought in November,
1803. In March 1822 he deeded this same land to Olive Bentley, widow of
Greene Bentley Jr., and their five
sons.
Greene Sr. died prior to September 06, 1823 when land from his estate was
transferred by a deed. He was
buried in the family cemetery north of Millport, site of a State Historical
marker.

of the Seventh-Day Baptist congregation from Westerly, moved to Albany
(later Washington) Co., NY sometime before 1790.

1770 in Schuyler,Herkimer,New York, and died April 09, 1801. She married
JOHN TANNER 1800 in Greenwich,Washington,New York.

Notes for JOHN TANNER:
BIOGRAPHY OF JOHN TANNER
The common ancestor of thousands of descendants that inhabit some 38 states
of the union was John Tanner, son of Joshua and Thankful Tanner. He was born
August 15, 1778, in the state of Rhode Island. At the age of thirteen years
he moved with his parents to Greenwich, Washington County, New York, where
his father, who had been a farmer, died. John took up the business of his
father, settled his father's estate and early in the year 1800 John married
Tabitha Bentley, by whom he had one son, Elisha, born March 23, 1801. The
mother died on the 9th day of April of the same year. Subsequently, John
Tanner married Lydia Stuart, by whom he had twelve children, nine sons and
three daughters. Lydia, the daughter of William and Amy (Hutton) Stuart, was
said to have descended from the Stuart royal family of Scotland, and on her
mother's side from Miles Standish of Plymouth Colony.

One evening in the year 1808, when he returned from his work, he found that
two of his children had been bitten by his dog which had gone mad and he in
his attempt to confine his dog was also bitten on the calf of the leg.
Realizing immediately that he had no time to lose, he grasped a pair of
sheep shears and cut out the affected parts and filled the wound with salt.
He thus succeeded in saving his own life and was also successful in saving
the lives of his children.

In the spring of 1818, John Tanner moved with his large family to North West
Bay, where a son and daughter were born. In 1823, he moved to the town of
Bolton where in 1825 another son was born. In May of that year his wife
Lydia Stuart died. He then married a third wife, Elizabeth Besswick, by whom
he had six sons and two daughters. At this time at Bolton, notwithstanding
his large family responsibilities, he had acquired wealth and had become a
man of much influence and was extensively known and universally respected.
His name was synonymous with benevolence, honesty and integrity.

In the mysterious dispensations of Providence, a terrible calamity overtook
him in the form of a painful disease, which, according to the most
consummate skill was incurable, indeed its character was unknown by the
medical fraternity. His left leg from the thigh down was covered with black
sores through which the muscles of the limb having formed into hollow pipes
or tubes projected outward to the surface. From these tubes matter was
continuously oozing.

Thomas Northup was apparently born 1716, North Kingstown, Washington Co.,
Rhode Island; The first child to Nicholas and Abbigail (Eldred) Northup.
This is not totally resolved, as my best information says that Nicholas and
Abbigail were not married until 1721. Nicholas was old enough that Thomas
could have been norn from a previous wife. It was not uncommon for the women
to die in childbirth in those days.

Thomas was married to (1) SUSANNAH Congdon Abt. 1740, North Kingstown,
Washington Co., Rhode Island; (b. 7 February 1719/20, North Kingstown,
Washington Co., Rhode Island), (2) LADY NEEDHAM, Aft. 1741 in England; (b.
Abt. 1718, England.) It is presumed that they returned from England with 4
children, and added as many as 7 more, after they returned in 1766. Dates of
birth are not known, and it is not known if any of the children were born to
Susannah.

John B. Northup writes:
Stephentown, founded 29 March 1784, by Stephen Van Rensselaer. It was a 200
square mile area. The 1790 census showed it to be the ninth largest town in
the United States. Eventually eleven more towns were formed from within the
original tract. A 1784 map of the area shows several Rhode Island names
within its boundaries including Gardner, Clark (e), Thomas, Arnold, Niles,
Barber, Moon, Reynolds, Northup(for Thomas), and others. This appears to
have been a major destination for those heading west. It also shows that the
land was quite rapidly claimed, and undoubtedly families, arriving as late
as 1784, found the land too expensive for them or just not available,
causing them to keep going to find the "land of opportunity." Note: the land
was "free" but they had to give the landlord 10% of their gross crops.

There seems to be several cases of families who knew each other getting the
"move urge" about the same time, and banding together for the move for the
purpose of security against misfortunes of nature, natives, or just plain
bad luck. The picture of Connestoga wagons crossing the prarie in long
trains was much more picturesque than sleds pulled thru the woods, but
chances are they both had the same purpose, security and direction.

Tom Clarke believes it possible that a total list of children is: Nicholas,
Needham, Emmanuel, Girl, Girl, Girl, Thomas, Eunice, Levi, Susanna and
Abiah.

Madison County Bios

A. V. BENTLEY, who is at present the oldest living lawyer in De Ruyter, was
born in that town July 15, 1816, and received the rudiments of an English
education at the common schools which were efficient educators of the young
at that date. With limited opportunities, as were those of most young men of
the time, he early developed a passion for books and by teaching in winters
acquired the means of further prosecuting his studies. In the higher schools
and academies he pursued the languages and natural sciences of which he
became especially fond. In this direction, he was aided and encouraged by
Dr. HUBBARD SMITH, an early physician of De Ruyter. Through a course of
seven seasons he was engaged at intervals in teaching school in Madison and
some of the adjoining counties. In 1839, Mr. BENTLEY entered the office of
his brother Z. T. BENTLEY, Esq., at De Ruyter, afterwards known as Gen.
BENTLEY, and commenced the study of the law with an allowance of four years
for classical studies in abridgment of the regular legal course which was
seven years. He was admitted to the bar in 1842, at the July term of the old
Supreme Court, the Hon. SAMUEL NELSON, Chief Justice, presiding, with ESEK
COWEN and GREENE C. BRONSON associate justices. Mr. BENTLEY opened an office
at De Ruyter, and at once entered into a vigorous but friendly competition
with his brother, Gen. BENTLEY, who kept a separate office, and with many
other well known lawyers of Cortland and Chenango counties. Within the next
four years Mr. BENTLEY was elected a Justice of the Peace, (which at that
time was a far more important office than at present,) by reason of his
acknowledged ability and familiarity with legal principles, and with the
exception of an interval of some two years, continued to be re-elected term
after term covering a period of about thirty years. During this time he was
elected and served as an Associate Justice of the County sessions. In the
meantime his health had become impaired through an early physical infirmity,
so that the field of more arduous practice became somewhat restricted; but
his office business greatly increased, and to that he gave a large share of
his attention. As a real estate lawyer and conveyancer his experience and
rapid business methods were proverbial, and as a safe counsellor his advice
was sought in the most important transactions. His ability, honesty and
integrity of character drew many clients, whilst his natural disrelish of
strifes and litigations caused him to advise in the interests of peace where
peace could be honorably obtained. His opinions as a legal counsellor and
friend have been largely called into requisition, and none the less
frequently by reason of his habit of often imparting advice without fee or
reward save the satisfaction of doing good.
Mr. BENTLEY is a ready and fluent speaker, is well read in the law and
possesses and continues to cultivate literary tastes and pursuits unusual
among business men. His apt and off-hand ability as a writer has often been
called into service by others who have many times received the credit due to
his quiet methods. In 1861, under the administration of Mr. Lincoln he was
appointed postmaster at De Ruyter, which position he has held ever since,
enjoying the respect and confidence of the people and their descendants
among whom he was born and has always lived. In the early days of the
anti-slavery cause he took a deep and active interest in the overthrow of
the slave power which ruled the nation. Throughout the rebellion his
sympathies and efforts were enlisted on the side of the Union, and his voice
was frequent and eloquent in its support. Mr. BENTLEY is a pronounced
republican; yet never obtrudes his opinions offensively on others. In
religion, he leans strongly to the free liberal sentiments of modern
thinkers. He discards authority and rests all questions of theology on their
intrinsic merits and reasonableness. His urbanity, dignity and courtesy
towards all, have secured him the kind regards and esteem of of his
neighbors and fellow men. If he has not accumulated as large a property as
some, he has the satisfaction of feeling that he has taken no man's farm for
his fee, nor robbed the widow or orphan of their inheritance In the sunset
of life, he deems it better to leave the world with the world's blessing,
rather than with the maledictions of those whose substance he has
confiscated to enrich himself. The likeness of Mr. BENTLEY does not appear
in this volume among the pictures of some of the prominent men of De Ruyter;
but the missing statue of Brutus was more remarked than the statues present
of the other illustrious Romans.

Notes for CHARLES WILLIAM BENTLEY:
Charles William Bentley was born in Northstonington Connecticut in 1815. He
was raised under a strick code of ethics which included labor as being the
most important duty of man. He worked on his father's farm until he turned
sixteen at which time he went to sea. After one voyage he returned home at
the request of his parents and took a job with a Norwich house building
company. Here he began studying machinery and completed an apprenticeship.
Charles first came to Baltimore in 1837 and was employeed by the Canton
Company. He was soon put incharge of the work of the company. When the
contract was finished he formed a partnership with the Canton company to
form the first sash and door company in the state. Unfortunately the company
was not successfully mainly do to the prejudice of factory made products.
In 1840 Charles started inventing a upright tubular steam boiler for cooking
and agricultural purposes. He obtained a patent for his invention and
started a machine and boiler making company in 1848. The company was called
Baltimore Steam Boiler Works and was located oat 25 S. Front St. in
Baltimore. His work was noted for its excelence and in 1850 the Maryland
Institute awarded him a gold medal for one of his steam engines. He
established the Baltimore Steam - Boiler works.
In 1858 he bought property on the North Central Railroad which is now known
as Bentley Springs. Here he he built a rail station, several houses and the
Glen House, which became a popular summer resort until its destuction in
1868.
Charles W. Bentley was one of the most active founders of the Maryland
Institute for the promotion of the Mechanical Arts. He served on the board
of managers from 1848 - 1874, on the Committee of the school of Desigh from
1851 - 1861 and again from 1869 - 1870. He was vice president of the
Maryland Institute from 1860 - 1864, 1866 and 1868. He was the school's
president from 1872 - 1873.
In 1862 the school's " Great Hall " was used as a hospital forseven hundred
men wounded in the Civil War.

62. JOSHUA6 BENTLEY (JOSHUA5, JOHN4, GEORGE3, WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was born
March 1786, and died June 29, 1851 in Cherry Creek Chautauqua Co NY. He

BENTLEY
Joshua, Jr son of Joshua and Abigail WILSIE
b 3/1786 d 6/29/1851
Wife Sally THOMAS 3/1789 died 6/24/1862
Second settler of Cherry Creek ;
Said to be Joshua BENTLEY Junior;
>From Stephentown, Rensselaer Co NY, settled on lot 15, Sept. 1, 1815. He was
one of the corps of surveyors that ran the lines in this part of the county
before settlement. The center of the township was found in the survey, to be
on a little island in the stream, where was a small red cherry tree. Mr.
Bentley, the axe man, cut it down, drove down a stake, and named the creek,
"Cherry Creek." Mr. Bentley, seemed to have a relish for forest life and
forest scenery, settling miles from any inhabitant. After several years of
enjoyment of "life in the woods", it was suddenly embittered by a most
distressing bereavement. On a clear Sabbath morning, the 2nd day of April a
little daughter in her 4th year, strayed into the forest, and was never seen
afterward. Mrs. BENTLEY, with 2 of the older children , started out to pick
some cowslips, the little girl at play in the doorway, her father asleep on
the floor. She was not missed until Mrs. Bentleys return about an hour
afterward. A search was commenced, and continued by the inhabitants of the
surrounding country, but without discovering the least trace of the child.
That she had been taken away by the Indians, or that she had wandered into
the woods and been devoured by wild beasts, was among the conjectures
concerning her fate.
Andrew W. Young,
History of Chautauqua Co. NY 1875

CHERRY CREEK-was formed from Ellington, May 4, 1829. It lies on the E.
border of the co., a little N. of the center. The surface is hilly in the N.
W., and rolling in the S.E. Along the S. border are several small swamps. It
is drained by Connewango Creek and several tributaries, flowing S. The soil
is clay and a gravelly loam. Cherry Creek, (p. v.,) in the S. E. part,
contains 3 churches, 2 sawmills, and a gristmill. Pop. 240. The first
settlement was made on Lot 15, in 1812, by Joshua Bentley, from Rensselaer
co. The first religious services were held at the house of Ward King, in
1817; the Rev. Mr. Hadley (Bap.) was the first preacher.
