DEWITTVILLE, NY

ALDEN

James L. Alden died Friday evening at the home of his daughter Mrs.
Albert J. Cross, at North Ellery, following a long illness, at the age
of 76 years 2 months and 13 days. Besides the daughter he is survived
by three grandchildren, Eleanor, Adelaide and Alberta Cross; a brother,
Charles D. Alden of Black Lick, Pa., and two sisters Mrs. Elvira Lewis
of Brocton and Mrs. Sabr Mosher of Ripley. The funeral will be held
Monday at 12:30 p.m. from the home followed by a service at 2 p.m. at
the Christian church at Dewittville. The interment will be in the
Dewittville Cemetery.

Ellery...The funeral of Mrs. Lillian Pickett Alden (wife of James L.
Alden) was held at the Dewittville Christian Church March 17th,
preceded by a prayer service at the home. The attendance of relatives
and friends was large. The pastor of the church, Rev. F. W. Chace spoke
words of comfort and cheer, dwelling especially on the Christian
character and life of the deceased. Mrs. N. W. Irwin and Mrs. C. G.
Lord sang very sweetly her favorite hymns, "Sometime We'll Understand"
and "Face to Face." The bearers were N. W. Pickett, A. F. Pickett,
Alfred F. Harvey and Albert J. Cross, all relatives. The floral
offerings were especially beautiful. She was laid to rest in the family
lot in the Dewittville Cemetery.
Mrs. Alden
was the only daughter of Whitfield W. and Janette Harris Pickett. She
attended the Mayville High School for some time and later became a
successful teacher. In November 1880, she was united in marriage to
James L. Alden. To this union two daughters were born, Alta, wife of
Albert J. Cross and Alma, who married Alfred Harvey and died in young
womanhood. For more than thirty years she was a member of the Mt.
Olivet Baptist Church at Denton and for many years was the organist and
a faithful Sunday School teacher there. During the later years of her
life, she was an invalid, still retaining her interest in passing
events and radiating cheer to a remarkable degree. She is survived by
an invalid husband to whom the sympathy of the community goes out, one
daughter, Mrs. Albert J. Cross, three grandchildren, Eleanor, Adelaide
and Alberta Cross and two brothers, W. W. and A. F. Pickett.

ARNOLD

PJ: Dec. 13, 1955: Dewittville: Claude N. Arnold, 74, a life-long
resident of this area, died at 2 a.m. today at his home, R. F. D.,
Dewittville.
Mr.
Arnold was born in the Town of Ellery, Dec. 31, 1882, the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Frank Arnold. At the time of his death, Mr. Arnold operated a
dairy farm. He had been a live long resident of this area, except for a
few years spent in Westfield, where he was employed on the railroad. He
is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Dortha Giles, Bemus Point; one son,
Kenneth Arnold, Dewittville; one brother, Guy Arnold, Mayville; one
sister, Mrs. Marjorie Darling, Niobe, and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral
services for Claude N. Arnold, Dewittville, were held at 2 p.m. Friday
from the Evans Funeral Home. Rev. Earl W. Mattison, pastor of the
Dewittville E.U.B. Church officiated. Burial was in Dewittville
Cemetery. Bearers were Fred Cook, Albert Cross, Joe Boswell, Leigh

ARNOLD

PJ: 3/6/1981: Dewittville: Kenneth "Red" Arnold, 68, of R. D. 1,
Dewittville, died at 3:16 a.m. today (March 6, 1981) in WCA Hospital,
Jamestown, following a week-long illness. He had been the former owner
of Arnolds Service Station in Dewittville, and had also been a farmer,
retiring in 1976.
He
was born Feb. 24, 1913 in Dewittville, the son of Claude and Emma
Arnold. Arnold was a life member and past fire chief of Dewittville
Fire Department, and was a member of Maple Springs Volunteer Fire
Department. He was a member of the Chautauqua County Fire Police and
Fire Chiefs Association, the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Association,
the Westfield Moose Lodge No. 118, and Dewittville Cemetery Assocition.
Surviving
are his wife, the former Gladys Giles, whom he married Nov. 2, 1932 in
Mayville; six children, Donald Arnold and Roxanna Maytum, both of
Dewittville, Ronald and Stephen Arnold, both of Bemus Point, JoAnne
Mosier of Kennedy, and Wendy Arnold, at home; nine grandchildren; and a
sister, Dortha Giles of Mayville.


 

ARNOLD GILES 

PJ: 10/8/1995: Dewittville: Gladys B. Arnold, 81, of 5173 Bayview Road, Dewittville,
died at 10:40 p.m. Friday (Oct. 6, 1995) in Brooks Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 4, 1914, in Dewittville, the daughter of Arthur and Lillian Dean Giles.
She is survived by three daughters: Roxanna Maytum of Dewittville, JoAnn Hitcomb of
Mayville and Wendy Fiorella of Ellington; three sons: Donald Arnold of Dewittville and
Ronald and Stephen Arnold, both of Bemus Point; 12 grandchildren; and 10
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth “Red” Arnold, whom
she marriedNov. 4, 1932, and who died March 1, 1981; two sisters: Alice
Penhollow and Mary Henry; and a brother, Arthur Giles.


 

BACKLAS

Edward Backlas Age 91, of Cheektowaga and Point Chautauqua, Thursday, March 11, 2004; 

He was born Dec. 13, 1912, in Buffalo, the son of Edward and Helen Lampka Backlas

Survived by one daughter, Gloria Rado of Marilla, NY, one son, James E.
Backlas of Dewittville; three grandchildren, Melissia, Timothy and
Lesley; one brother Conrad Backlas of Tonawanda and two sisters, Ann
Mioducki and Florence Riggs both of Lancaster. Predeceased by his wife
May Brenneman Backlas in 2001 and his brother Chester Baklarz. Burial
will be in the Dewittville Cemetery.

BOSWELL

P.J. clipping dated Thursday Evening, January 27, 1944: Dewittville -
The community was deeply grieved over the death of Miss Bessie
Bosworth, 63, who died at the family home Wednesday at 9:50 a.m. after
suffering a stroke at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Surviving are her uncle, Edward
Nichols; her sister, Miss Edna Bosworth, with whom she resided, and
other relatives at Pittsburgh. She was born in Pittsburgh, but had made
her home here for the past five years. Miss Bosworth was a member of
the United Brethren Church here and a faithful worker in the Red Cross,
the Red Cross meeting for this week being cancelled due to her death.
The remains will be at the family home until Friday, where a prayer
service will be held at 3:45 p.m. followed by funeral services at the
church at 4 p.m. with Rev. C. C. Akam officiating. Interment will be in

BROWNELL

Dewittville: The death of Simeon Brownell, a well known resident of
Dewittville, occurred at his home in that village Friday. He was born
Feb. 10, 1833 in the town of Ellery, and was united in marriage to
Julia Mason in 1863. He was a resident of the town of Ellery until
about 14 years ago, when he moved to Dewittville. He is survived by his
wife, Julia MASON Brownell and two sisters, Mrs. George Mason of Los
Angeles, Cal., and Mrs. Hulda Starr of Lakewood. He was a member of the
Dewittville grange. The funeral will be held from the Christian church
at Dewittville Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

BRYANT HUGO 

Harriett T. Bryant, 84, of E. Lake Road, died Friday (April 2, 2004) in her home. 
She was born Aug. 11, 1919, in Cleveland, the daughter of Harry and Mary Hayes Hugo.

She is survived by two daughters: Dee Ette Schumacher and Linda
Sandberg, both of Mentor, Ohio; a son, William G. Bryant of
Dewittville; eight grandchildren: Steven and Thomas Schumacher, Theresa
Franczak, Christopher and Kevin Bryant, Timothy, Brian and Scott
Sandberg; four great-granddaughters; and a sister, Marion Hawkins of
Cleveland. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Bryant,
whom she married July 3, 1942, in Cleveland and who died June 14, 2000.

 

CADWELL

Dewittville....Ward Cadwell, 70, for the past 20 years engaged in the
manufacture of cheese here, died at his home Monday noon. He is
survived by his wife, Janie Carpenter Cadwell; a son, Ford Cadwell, at
home, and two nephews.
He
spent his entire life in the Town of Chautauqua and held the office of
Justice of the Peace at the time of his death. For many years he
formerly operated a livery stable at Point Chautauqua. He and his wife,
spent their winters, since 1934, in Florida, their wedding anniversary
on Jan 13, being celebrated annually. Next, Jan. 13, would have marked
their 50th anniversary.

CADWELL CARPENTER 

Committal services for Mrs. Janie Carpenter Cadwell, 84, of the Cadwell
Farm, Dewittville, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Dewittville
Cemetery. Rev. Wayne B. Ostrander, pastor of Dewittville EUB Church
will officiate. Mrs. Cadwell died in the Wilhelm Nursing Home,
Sarasota, Fla., Tuesday, april 9, 1963. She had been in failing health
since January and was admitted to the nursing home March 9. The Cadwell
family is well known to hundreds of people in this area who have
visited the Cheese House at the family farm. Mrs. Cadwell and her
husband, Ward Cadwell, who died in 1947, formerly were active in the
farm's operation.
Mrs.
Cadwell was born in Maple Springs, Jan 13, 1879, a daughter of Orlando
and Fannie Carpenter and was a lifelong resident of the area. She had
wintered in Sarasota for the past 30 years. A charming hostess, Mrs.
Cadwell was a woman of lovely character, domestic in her tastes and
endowed with a keen sense of humor and cheerfulness. A son, Ford
Cadwell, Dewittville; a granddaughter, Mrs. Jane Morell, Niagara Falls;
a sister, Mrs. Elton Hunt, Jamestown, and several nieces and nephews
survive. Besides her husband and parents Mrs. Cadwell was preceded in
death by two sister, Lelia Townsend and Belle Furlow. Many area
residents wintering in Sarasota attended funeral services there
Saturday in Roberts Funeral Home. Rev. J. Moody McNair, pastor of

CADWELL RASMUSSEN 

PJ: Thursday, July 12, 1956: Residents of the Dewittville area
underwent an unexpected shock this (Thursday) morning when news of the
sudden death of Mrs. Ford Cadwell circulated rapidly through the
community.
Mrs.
Cadwell, whom her husband said suffered a poor heart was found dead in
her bed about 6:30 a.m. She apparently had passed away in her sleep
during the night.
Alison Rasmussen Cadwell, 40, was born in England
and in addition to her husband and a daughter, Jane Currie, at home,
leaves a father and mother in England. They are: Mrs. Fred Bradshaw and
Adolph Rasmussen, both of London. Also surviving are three brothers,
Robert and Michael Bradshaw of England and Ernest, South Africa; and a
sister, Adeline Krough, Copenhagen, Denmark.

CHAPMAN

PJ: Oct., 1979: Dewittville: Lawrence C. Chapman, 80, of Dewittville,
died at 11 p.m. Wednesday (Oct 10, 1979) at his home. Before his
retirement in 1962 he had been a partner in Dieter and Chapman Tree
Co., Jamestown.He was born Sept. 10, 1899 in Olean, the son of Charles
and Dora Rheller Chapman. He married the former Irma R. Cook on March
27m 1928 in Buffalo. He had been a resident of Dewittville for 40
years. Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Jean C. Loomis
of Pittsfield, Mass. and Lois C. Browning of West Grange, N. J.; and
seven grandchildren.

COLLINS WHITTLE

Hildreth "Hildy" Collins, 81, of Lakeview Ave., Mayville, died Feb. 22
at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk. She was born in Jamestown on
Aug. 27, 1923, the daughter of the late William and Katherine (Kahler)
Whittle. Surviving are five children, Mike Luecke of Ft. Myers, Fla.,
Pat Milton of Brooklyn Park, Minn., David Luecke of Manchester, Barb
Kessler of Cottage Grove, Ore. and Howard Mark Collins of Mayville; 13
grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. 

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard
Collins, who died in 1968; and two sisters, Nancy Thayer Kelsey and
Margaret Kraemer. 

Burial will be in the Dewittville Cemetery.

 

COOK

PJ: Apr. 1970: Ashford Hollow - Donald DeForest “MUDGIE” Cook, 30, of
the Fluvanna-Townline Road, Gerry, was killed Saturday when his rented
plane crashed in a meadow off Neff Road near this Cattaraugus County
community.According to authorities, "Mudgie" Cook had rented the
aircraft from the Proudman Aviation Service at the Jamestown Municipal
Airport. Gordon Proudman, a company executive, declined to discuss the
accident pending the FAA investigation.
The
wrecked airplane was found shortly before noon on the Herman Hinney
farm, located between here and West Valley. Dr. John V. Anderson, a
Cattaraugus County coroner, was summoned to the scene.
Cook, who
held a private license, had only recently learned to fly. He had,
however, flown many hours with his father, Fred Cook of Dewittville.
Sheriff's deputies stated that the two-seater Citabra struck the ground so hard that it was literally torn apart by the impact.
Mr. Cook was born March 5, 1940, in Westfield, the son of Fred and Gertrude Holbrook Cook.
He was a truck driver for Hunkin Conkey Construction Co.
He had served with the U.S. Army at Ft. Knox, Ky., and Ft. Dix, N.J., in 1958.
Mr.
Cook was a member of the American Snowmobile Association; Ellery Rod
and Gun Club; Teamsters Local No. 649; the Gerry Volunteer Fire Dept.;
Lakewood Rod and Gun Club; and the American War Vets Club. Surviving
are his wife, Mrs. Beverly Samuelson Cook; two sons, Donald Jr. and
Douglas B. Cook, and a daughter, Kimberly Ann Cook, all at home; his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cook, Dewittville; and a sister, Mrs. David
Nickerson, Dewittville.


 

CRANDALL

PJ: Aug. 12, 1956: Dewittville: Esli Frank Crandall, 85, Dewittville,
died Sunday morning at Westfield Memorial Hospital. He was born Feb.
22, 1871, in Stockton, the son of James P. and Addie Barber Crandall.
He was married Sept. 5, 1888, in Sherman, to Minnie LEWIS, who preceded
him in death on Dec. 25, 1954. Mr. Crandall was a retired farmer and
had lived in Dewittville all his life. survivors include two sons,
Leland Crandall, Hartfield, and Hugh Crandall, Jamestown; two sisters,
Mrs. May Galloway, Dewittville, and Mrs. Alice Draught, Port Hueneme,
Calif.; four grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; five nephews and
three nieces.

 

CRANDALL LEWIS 

Mayville...Mrs. Minnie B. Crandall, 86, of Mayville, died at 8:15 A.M.
Saturday in Jamestown General Hospital. She was the wife of Esli
Crandall.
Mrs.
Crandall was born in Ellery, March 5, 1868, the daughter of Ira and
Kate Louis Lewis. She was married to Esli Crandall on September 5, 1888.
In
addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Leland F.
Crandall, Mayville; Hugh B. Crandall, Jamestown; four grandchildren, 12
great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

CURTIS

Charles A. Curtis, 82, of Route 430 died Wednesday (March 12, 2003) in
Westfield Memorial Hospital. He was born Dec. 8, 1920, in Busti, the
son of Roy and Beida Eden Curtis II. He was a veteran of World War II,
serving in the U.S. Navy He is survived by his wife, Doris ''Dolly''
Hippensteal Curtis; two sons: Charles A. Curtis Jr. of Fairbanks,
Alaska, and Robert J. Curtis of Dewittville; nine grandchildren; and
nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter,
Beverly Matteson; a sister, Pearl Shiverlier; and three brothers:
Claire, Donald and Roy H. Curtis.

 

DUDLEY

PJ: Dec., 1963: Mayville: Mrs. Effie May Dudley, 81, former resident of
Elm Street, died at 8 a.m. Monday (Dec. 23, 1963) in Dunkirk. She was
the widow of Wilbur Dudley, who died May 7, 1956.She was born July 15,
1882, in Ripley, the daughter of William and Sara Cook Osborne.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Dewittville
Cemetery Ellery Scrapbook E, pg 61

 

FLANDERS RUSS

PJ: Apr. 22, 1962: Dewittville: Mrs. Eva Russ Flanders, 102, Chautauqua
County's oldest resident who three weeks ago escaped uninjured when her
trailer home was destroyed by fire, died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday (April 22,
1962) at the home of Herbert Strickland here. Mrs. Flanders was born
Aug. 6, 1859, in the Town of Sherman where she lived with parents,
Joseph and Mary Russ, until they moved to Stockton, a short time after
she was born. She was next to the oldest of 13 children, and was the
last one to survive.
She
was married to Fred Flanders of Ellery Dec. 28, 1881, in Fredonia,
where they made their home for 26 years until moving to Dewittville in
1907. For 11 years, she and her husband were cheese makers in Ellery.
A
son Parker Flanders, Point Chautauqua, and a daughter, Mrs. Lena F.
Dorman, with whom she made her home for many years, were born in the
same house in Stockton in which Mr. Flanders was born.
In 1936,
following the death of her husband, she made her home with Mrs. Dorman.
Since that time, she has traveled in 22 states and in Mexico. She is
survived by one son, Parker Flanders, Point Chautauqua; her daughter,
Mrs. Lena Dorman, Dewittville; a grandson, Ernest Starr, Rochester; a
granddaughter, Mrs. Arlene Fuenzalida, Paris, France, and several great
grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Flanders had been ill the
past three months. She had lived at the Strickland home since March 29,
when fire destroyed her trailer home.
Mrs. Flanders continued to
take an active part in life of the community until very recently. She
was an honor guest at the Sesquirama in Jamestown Municipal Stadium in
1960 during the city's sequicentennial celebration, cast her vote for
Richard M. Nixon in the 1960 residential election, and last summer
attended the annual Funorama wrestling spectacle in War Memorial
Stadium, Buffalo.
In August 1959, at the time of her 100th birthday,
she received letters of congratulation from Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower and
from Rep. Charles E. Goodell.

FLANDERS FREEMAN

P.J. clipping dated Jan. 4, 1947: Dewittville: Mrs. Ella Freeman
Flanders, 88, formerly of this place, died on Thursday at the home of
her daughter, Mrs. Morris B. Sanford, Morrisville, Pa. She was the
widow of the late Matt Flanders. She is also survived by a son, Milton
W. Flanders of Washington D. C.; and three grandchildren, Richard
Flanders of Richmond, Va.; Robert Flanders of Norfolk, Va.; and Miss
Doris Sanford of Morrisville, Pa. Interment will be in the Dewittville
Cemetery.

The funeral of Ella Freeman Flanders who died at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Morris R. Sandford, Morrisville, Pa., Dec. 2, was held
at Mayville Monday. Rev. C. C. Akam of Dewittville officiating. She was
born at Dewittville in 1858, graduating from the Mayville High School
in 1875, joined the Methodist Church at an early age and taught school
for three yers prior to her marriage to Matt Flanders in 1879. She was
a member of the Pioneer Class of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific
Circle, graduating in 1882. During her long life she was a contributor
to numerous newspapers and wrote signed articles for numerous magazines
and publications. She was a member of Dewittville Grange for more than
50 years and took as active interest in all community affairs. She
attended the Dewittville church for many years. Surviving relatives are
a daughter, Mrs. Morris B. Sandford, Morrisville, Pa.; Milton M.
Flanders, Washington D. C.; three grandchildren, Robert Flanders,
Richmond, Va., Mrs. Raymond B. Arnold, Newark, N.J. and one great
grandson. A sister, Miss Henrietta B. Freeman is living at Los Angeles,
Cal.

FLANDERS

Jamestown newspaper clipping dated Dec. 25, 1952
Mrs.
Milton M. Flanders, 66, a former resident of Dewittville, died at her
home in Washington, D. C., Thursday night. She was born in the Town of
Stockton and lived in the area until her marriage in 1911. She is
survived by her husband, Milton M. Flanders, Washington; two sons,
Robert H. Flanders, Norfolk, Va., and Richard F. Flanders,
Philadelphia, Pa.; a sister, Mrs. Gifford C. Lawrence, Bemus Point; a
brother, Hugh M. Hall, Cassadaga, and four grandchildren. Burial was in
Dewittville cemetery.

 

FRANCIS SMITH

Alice M. Francis, 53, of Meadows Road, died at 5:25 p.m. Thursday (Nov.
6, 2003) in her home. She was born March 16, 1950, in Westfield, the
daughter of the late Ernest R. and Helen Furlow Smith.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel L. Francis, whom she married May
14, 1983, in Dewittville; a daughter, Susan A. Francis at home; a son,
Furlow Francis at home; six sisters: Kathleen Turpin of Decatur, Tenn.,
Esther Lawson of Mayville, Mary Smith and Ruth A. Frudd, both of
Westfield, Susan Hindman of Dewittville, and Peggy Kelwaski of Sherman;
five brothers: Allen Smith of Jamestown, Charles Smith of Westfield,
Herbert and Peter Smith, both of Mayville, and Larry Smith of Sherman;
and a foster brother, Chris Bemis of Brocton. Besides her father who
died Aug. 17, 1990, and her mother, who died May 13, 1999, she was
preceded in death by a brother, David Smith, who died Dec. 9, 2000.

Burial will be in Dewittville Cemetery.

 

GALLOWAY HARMELINK 

PJ: July, 1972: Dewittville: Mrs. Iva B. Galloway, 78, died at 1:10
p.m. Sunday (July 8, 1972) in WCA Hospital, Jamestown, following an
eight-week illness. She was the wife of Vincent J. Galloway. Born Nov.
3, 1893, in Sherman, she was the daughter of Derrick William and Alta
Jones Harmelink.
Mr.
and Mrs. Galloway were married Aug. 17, 1921, in Sherman. She had been
a resident of this area for 68 years.Besides her husband, she is
survived by one daughter, Mrs. Naomi S. Bloomstran, Bemus Point; one
son, Bruce Galloway, Plant City, Fla.; five grandchildren, two nieces
and one nephew.Burial will be in Dewitttville Cemetery


GALLOWAY CRANDALL 

PJ: Sept., 1965: Dewittville: Mrs. Nancy May Galloway, 92, Main Road,
died at 8:30 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 26, 1965) at her home, after a short
illness. She was born Sept. 18, 1873, in the Town of Chautauqua, the
daughter of James Paul and Adelaide Barber Crandall. On May 10, 1892
she was married to Hugh Grant Galloway in Brocton, who died Feb. 1,
1956. Mr. and Mrs. Galloway had celebrated their 63rd wedding
anniversary in May 1955.
Survivors
are three sons, Vincent Galloway of Dewittville, Mearl Galloway of
Holly Hill, Fla., and Harold B. Galloway of Lake George; 11
grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Her oldest son, LaVerne
Galloway, died in 1961. A sister and two brothers preceded her in death.

 

GALLOWAY

PJ: Feb. 2, 1956: Dewittville: Hugh Grant Galloway, 87, known by all of
his friends as "Bud", died at 10 p.m. Wednesday at his home, following
a recent stroke.

Mr. Galloway was born in LaPlatte, Minn., Jan. 31, 1869, the son of
James and Rachel Ann Crosgrove Galloway. He moved to Westfield at the
age of four, residing there until 1904, when he moved to Dewittville.
Mr. Galloway was in the feed and coal business, first with George S.
Griffith and later with his son, Vincent. Mr. Galloway and the former
Nancy May Crandall were married in Brocton, May 19, 1892 by Rev. W. C.
Wiltsie. For the past 23 years Mr. and Mrs. Galloway had spent their
winters in Florida.
Surviving
are his wife; four sons, LaVerne G. Galloway and Vincent J. Galloway,
Dewittville; Mearl A. Galloway, Dewittville and Holly Hill, Fla.;
Harold B. Galloway, Lake George, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; 14
great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A brother, John
Galloway, and two sisters, Nellie Galloway and Mrs. Eina Anderson,
preceded him in death.

Lee Gravit's ( family at Mayville Cemetery ) mother - Jennie (Hawley)
Gravet was born Feb. 10, 1863 at French Creek. She died Sept. 1942 at
her home after an illness of several months. She is buried in the
Dewittville Cemetery. She had a brother William Hawley in 1942 of
Dewittville.
Lee's
brother - Claire Gravit was born Dec. 5, 1898 at Dewittville. He died
Jan. 13, 1977 WCA Hospital. He is buried in the Dewittville Cemetery.

 

GRAVIT

PJ: 1/14/1977: Bemus Point: Claire H. Gravit, 78, of Main street, Bemus Point, was
stricken at his home and pronounced dead on arrival at WCA Hospital, Jamestown, at
3:24 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 13, 1977). He was in business with his brother, Lee Gravit for
many years in the Gravit Vinegar Co. in Mayville. He later owned and operated a
combination gasoline station and grocery store at Shore Acres and also distributed fuel oil
and coal to the surrounding area from 1926 to 1953 when he retired. He was born Dec. 5,
1898, in Dewittville, the son of John and Jennie Hawley Gravit. He attended the United
Surviving are his wife, Julia Obuck Gravit. His first wife, Julia Sylvester Gravit died in 1958.

Burial will be in Dewittville Cemetery.

Mabel
K. Kofod Green, 94, of Bank Street, formerly of Dewittville, died
Wednesday (Feb. 27, 2002) in her home. She was born July 26, 1907, in
Blockville, the daughter of Peter and Anna Kofod. A Westfield resident
since 1956, she was a graduate of Chautauqua High School and WCA School
of Nursing as a registered nurse. She was employed as the evening
supervisor/charge nurse at Westfield Memorial Hospital from 1951 to
1976. She is survived by a son, James P. Green of Westfield; four
grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mildred Nelson of
Lakewood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson K. Green,
who died Feb. 1, 1989; a son, Richard Green; a daughter, Janice
Bensink; five brothers: Harold, Arthur, Donald, Theodore and Kenneth
Kofod; and two sisters: Agnes Simms and Ella Brennan. Interment will be
in Dewittville Cemetery

 

 

 

GRIFFITH BROWN 

P.J. clipping dated Friday Evening, Apr. 14, 1950: Funeral services for
Mrs. Etta Brown Griffith, 79, who died at her home in Dewittville at
8:30 a.m. Wednesday, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday from the
Evangelical United Brethren Church of Dewittville. Rev. Warren A.
Bugbee of Erie will officiate, assisted by Rev. F. R. Brooks. Interment
will be in Dewittville Cemetery. Mrs. Griffith was an honorary member
of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Dewittville Fire Department and a
member of the Dewittville Menders Club. She and her husband have
resided in Dewittville since their marriage on December, 56 years ago.
Surviving are her husband, George S. Griffith, three daughters, Mrs. E.
N. Wicander, Chicago; Mrs. J. V. Thomas of Cleveland, O. and Mrs. Frank
A. Phillips of Bay City, Mich.; four grandchildren and many nieces and
nephews.

buried in the Dewittville Cemetery. He was a lifelong resident of

Harold M. Hall, 95, of 5374 Centralia- Hartfield Road, died Tuesday
(April 30, 2002) in his home. He was born Dec. 23, 1905, in Erie, the
son of John and Rachel Logue Hall. He is survived by a son, Merlin D.
Hall of Mayville; four grandchildren: Philip M. Hall and Linda L.
Courtney, both of Mayville, Bradley A. Hall of Dewittville and Lori S.
Holder of Bemus Point; and six greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in
death by his wife, Bertha ‘‘Tug’’ Moon Hall, whom he married Oct. 22,
1932, in Gerry, and who died June 13, 1992; and a son, Richard A. Hall,
who died in 1961. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday

Norton.
Surviving are two daughters: Linda Haviland of Jamestown and Sandra
Cardot of SanPedro, Calif.; three grandchildren: Susan Lance and
Valerie Cardot of Lakewood, Calif.,Daniel Cardot of Scottsdale, Ariz.;
four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Flora Lamphearof Bemus
Point.She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Haviland, whom
she married Jan. 17, 1932 in Bemus Point and who died March 21, 1988;

been a life-long resident of the Dewittville area. Mr. Haviland is

Haviland, Bemus Point; Ross Haviland, Westfield; Linwood Haviland,
Maple Springs, and Donald Haviland, Fredonia; one sister, Mrs. Nellie
Bones, Central Point, Ore.; six grandchildren. He was born in the Town
of Ellery, February 21, 1879, the son of Ross and Margaret Bates
Haviland. Funereal services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Evans
Funeral Home, Bemus Point. Burial will be in Dewittville Cemetery.

Dewittville....G. William Hawley, 85, died Wednesday morning at the
home of Mrs. Edith Munson, Dewittville, where he had been residing.
Born
March 23, 1868, in French Creek, he was the son of Giles and Sarah
Garfield Hawley. Mr. Hawley came to Dewittville 31 years ago from
French Creek,. He was a member of the Macabees and the Dewittville
Grange.
He is survived by two daughters, Miss Ruth Hawley, Buffalo;
Mrs. Floyd Holmes, Frewsburg; two grandsons, one great-granddaughter,
and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2
PM Saturday from the Hemstreet Funeral Home. Rev. Earl W. Mattison,
pastor of the Dewittville E.U.B. Church will officiate. Burial will be

HAWLEY

Dewittville, June 25, 1934 Charles E. Jawley, a well known and highly
respected resident of Dewittville, died at his home there this
afternoon at 5:30 o'clock, aged 76 years. He had been ill several
weeks. Mr. Hawley, who was a carpenter by trade, had lived in
Dewittville for sixty years. Besides his wife, Mrs. Alice Brownell
Hawley, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mary Hawley Phillips of
Dewitville; a brother, George Hawley of Dewittville; a sister, Mrs.
Jennie Gravit of Dewittville; also six grandchildren, one great
grandchild and several nieces and nephews, all living in this vicinity.
Mr. and Mrs. Hawley celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary last April.

information pertaining to Charles Ernest Hawley. He was the son of
Giles and Sarah Garfield Hawley. He married April 8, 1800 at
Dewittville by Rev. S. H. Morse Alice M. Brownell, the daughter of

Marjorie Hoyt the daughter of Claud D. & Jessie Haskin Hoyt.
Everett and Marjorie's children were Joan, Rhoda and Charles.

PJ: Feb. 1966: Mayville - Lewis R. Higgs, 37, of the Portage Road,
Mayville, died at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 2, 1966) after a long
illness.
Mr.
Higgs has been employed as a route salesman for the Hall Baking co.,
until his illness. He was born Oct. 2, 1928 in Stockton, to Clarence
and Netta Rew Higgs.
He married the former Betty J. Holcomb on Nov. 18, 1950, in Westfield.
Besides
his wife he is survived by two daughters at home, Beverly and Beth
Higgs; his father, Clarence Higgs, Avon Park, Pla.; his mother, Mrs.
Betty Higgs, Jamestown; a sister, Mrs. Lawrence Rathburn, Mayville; and
several nieces and nephews.


 

HINDMAN

William D. ''Will'' Hindman, 33, of N. Cherry St., Elkins, W.Va.,
formerly of Dewittville, died Monday (Dec. 29, 2003) unexpectedly in
his home. He was born May 31, 1970, in Westfield, the son of David A.
and Susan J. Smith Hindman. Besides his parents, he is survived by one
sister, Dawn Swanson of Falconer; and one brother, Craig Hindman of
Dewittville. He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents,
Ernest and Helen Furlow Smith; and his paternal grandparents, Joseph
and Arlene Wilmarth Hindman.

 

HUNT 

PJ: Dec. 1966: Elton C. Hunt, 92, a resident of the Warner Home for 17
years, died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 3, 1966) at Jamestown General
Hospital.
Mr. Hunt owned and operated the E. C. Hunt Candy Co. in Jamestown, for many years.
Mr.
Hunt was born Nov. 18, 1874, near Dewittville, the son of Francis M.
and Lucella Wood Hunt. Mr. Hunt and his wife, the former Edith
Carpenter, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Feb. 12, 1960.
Besides
his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Harold W. Fairbank,
Bemus Point, and Bradenton, Fla.; and Mrs. Clelia H. Underwood,
Oklahoma City, Okla.; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren: and two
great great-grandchildren.

Mrs.
Carrie Waterman Hunt, wife of Willard W. Hunt, died yesterday afternoon
at the home, 1602 Delaware Ave., Buffalo, aged 64 years. Surviving is a
son, Maurice G. Cole, and three grandsons, Gilbert, Willard and Daton
Hunt, all of New York City. Mrs. Hunt was the daughter of the late
Perry G. and Helen F. Waterman of Bemus Point. She had resided in
Buffalo for 21 years. The funeral will be held tomorrow (Wednesday) at
3:30 p.m. at the home in Buffalo with a service Thursday at 2 p.m. at
the Dewittville Church. Burial will be in Dewittville.
The funeral
of Mrs. Willard W. Hunt was held yesterday afternoon from the
Dewittville Church with Reader Anton Klee of Lakewood officiating.
Bearers were William Farrish, Vernell Hatch, Clarence Mahan, George
Griffith, E. C. Hunt, and Ward Cadwell. Burial was in Dewittville
Cemetery. From away were E. Van Dyne of Buffalo; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence
A. Mahan, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Waterman, Mrs. Elizabeth Waterman and Mrs.

Richard L. Hurlburt, 74, of Shisler Road, Clarence, N.Y., and Lewis
Road, Maple Springs, died Saturday (Jan. 31, 2004) in Millard Fillmore
Suburban Hospital, Buffalo. 
He was born Oct. 1, 1929, in Salamanca, the son of Lynn and Ava Bond Hurlburt. 

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean
conflict.He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Strickland Hurlburt; four
daughters: Shirley Roberts of West Falls, N.Y., Karen Bossert of
Clarence, Nancy Stoltenberg of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Debra Myers
of North Tonawanda; three stepdaughters: Cheryl Steele of Gerry, Karen
Vogt of West Seneca, and Rita Dickey of Buffalo; eight grandchildren:
seven stepgrandchildren; two sisters: Bea Ouria of Jamestown, and
Dorothy Kent of Ellicottville; and a brother, Raymond Hurlburt of
Daphne, Ala. 

He was preceded in death by two stepdaughter: Marcia Dickey and Anita Yount.

 

INGERSON

HARRY INGERSON SR., and his wife HANNAH SCOFIELD INGERSON and two
children, AZARIAH and BETSY came to Chautauqua County on June 10, 1806,
with an ox team by the way of Barcelona thru Mayville to Dewittville.
He
came from Hadley, Saratoga County, N.Y. His wife wearied by the long
drive, thinking it would rest her to walk for a while, took an
eight-month old child in her arms and walked to Mayville, a distance of
seven or eight miles before her husband and son Azariah caught up with
her. She and the child being annoyed by fleas and mosquitoes thought it
some better to keep in motion. They settled on what is now known as
Cobb Hill; the first hill on the left from the State Highway east of
Green Gables near Dewittville. There he built a log house.
Coming so
late in the season and being obliged to do some clearing before he
could get in any crops, his corn did not mature before the first frost
overtook it, it being so green it would neigh grind nor sift if ground.
Their breadstuff was made by hollowing out a hardwood stump for a
mortar and pounding the corn. When mixed with salt and probably baked
on a board before the fire -- constituted their bread or johnny cake.
They
lived at the above location until his seventh child - HARRY WILSON
INGERSON was seven years of age. Then he bought 40 acres a mile further
east on the same side of the road, and there built another log-house.
Here, Harry Sr. died in 1830.
The house that is there now was built
in 1846 by Dominic Williams, Grandfather of Glenn Williams. The log
house stood north of the house now on the place. When Harry Sr. died,
he left the old home to his son HARRY W., and to his two unmarried
daughters - RACHEL and NANCY.
HARRY INGERSON SR., was born in 1777
and died in 1830. His wife, HANNAH SCOFIELD INGERSON was born in 1779
and died in 1854, both are buried in Dewittville Cemetery.

George Wyman Ingerson was born Feb. 7, 1869 Town of Ellery (the Ira
Ingerson homestead). He died Dec. 9, 1947 at Fredonia, NY. Age 78.
Buried Dewittville Cemetery beside his wife and mother. George the s/o
Ira Uriah & Elizabeth LaBelle (Thompson) Ingerson. He married May
19, 1893 at Cassadaga, NY - Ida M. Harper. A little more information on
their children: 1. Gerald Lee Ingerson was born Apr. 10, 1894 in
Ellery. He md. 1st ________. md. 2nd Lena Mather. 2. LeRoy Hinsy
Ingerson was born June 15, 1900. He married Lena Mather Ingerson (his
brother's second wife). Lena was born Jan. 21, 1895 at Laona. She died
May 29, 1970. Age 75. She is buried in the Dewittville Cemetery. Lena
was the d/o Henry & Mary (Holland) Mather. 3. Ethlyn Maud Ingerson

death of Mrs. Ida M. Ingerson, 68, wife of George E. Ingerson, died
yesterday noon [ May 30, 1941 ] at the residence at Waterman's Corners,

Sinclairville; a daughter, Mrs. Ethelyn Tewinkle, at home; four
brothers, Harry Harper, Youngstown, O.; William Harper, Brocton, Henry
Harper, Chicago, Ill., and Robert Harper, Falconer; a grandchild.
The couple observed their 48th wedding anniversary on May 19.
She had lived in the town of Ellery for 47 years. A private funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. (EST) at the home."

home at Waterman's Corners, Ellery. Rev. A.J. Powell of Jamestown and
Rev. C.E. Gould of Dewittville officiated.

Anderson, Claude Arnold, Eugene Link, Albert Cross, Donald Bettes and
Ernest Hermanson. Music was by a quartet composed of Rev. Mr. Powell,
Walter Fosberg, Brooks Linn and Harold Bish.
Interment was in
Dewittville cemetery. Attending from away were Harry Harper,
Youngstown, O., Miss Arthur Fitch, Meadville, Pa., and Miss Marion
Nasftsker, Buffalo."

A. Ingerson, 74, of Tanglewood Manor, formerly of Ellery Center-Mahanna
Road, R. D. 1, Bemus point, died at 4:37 p.m. Monday (June 24, 1991) in
WCA Hospital. She was the widow of Merton C. Ingerson, who died March
11, 1989.
A lifelong area resident, she was born April 11, 1917, in
Stockton, a daughter of Albert and Mabel Seekings Penhollow. Surviving
are three brothers, James and Harold Penhollow, both of Jamestown, and
Louis Penhollow of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and two sisters, Beatrice
Nelson of Russell, Pa., and Patricia Gilbert of Pushkarr, Texas.
She
was preceded in death by a son, Merton C. Ingerson Jr.; four brothers,
Almon, Morris, Ernest and Theodore Penhollow; and a sister, Agnes Baker.

An area resident most of his life, he was born Jan. 15,
1905, in Ellery, a son of Eugene and Gertrude Rhodes Ingerson.Surviving
are his wife, Bertha A. Penhollow Ingerson, whom he married April 7,
1933; a brother, Marion Ingerson of Bemus Point; and three sisters;
Florence Murdock and Bernice Lipsey, both of Bemus Point and Clara
Kesby Werner of Frewsburg.
He was preceded in death by a son, Merton

PJ: Feb., 1971: Dewittville - Mrs. Eva Winchester Leet, 73, of this
community, died at 10:30 a.m. Monday (Feb. 15, 1971) at WCA Hospital
after an illness of several months. She was the wife of Alan G. Leet.
Mrs. Leet had formerly taught school in Falconer and Mayville for 21
years before her retirement. She was born Nov. 19, 1897, in
Dewittville, the daughter of Levi and Mary Winchester and had lived her
entire life in the community. Mr. and Mrs. Leet were married June 30,
1925 at Dewittville.In addition to her husband, she is survived by two
sons, Merwin A. Leet, Oconomewoc, Wisc., and Myron G. Leet,
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; and one daughter, Mrs. Doris A. Eggleston, Vestal,
N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and one brother, Gerald H. Winchester, Maple
Springs.

Dewittville, died Tuesday (Sept. 25, 1986) in Westfield Health Care
Center. She was born Sept. 25, 1898, in Sugar Grove, PA, the daughter
of Clyde & Dell MCKELVEY COOPER. A
resident of Dewittville all her married life, Mrs. LEET was a retired
postal clerk there. She was a member of the Dewittville-Hartfield
United Methodist Church for more than 60 years. Surviving are 3
daughters: Clydell ULMER of Brocton, Barbara THOMPSON of Erie, &
Helen BIEKERT of grandchildren; Sharon COOK ofJamestown, Dale LINDAHL

Link, 72, of Dewittville, a farmer until his retirement last year and a
resident here most of his life, died at his home at 4:10 PM Thursday
after a long illness.
The son of Milton and Estella Link, he was
born at South Stocton on March 13, 1880. Mr. Link was a member of the
Dewittville Grange. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Belle Parker Link; a
daughter Mrs. Clarence Harrington of Hartfield; four grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren; a brother, Henry Link of Sinclairville; a
sister, Mrs. William Briggs of Stockton; and several nieces and nephews.

Dunkirk, formerly of Dewittville, died Tuesday (April 9, 2002) in the
facility.
She was born July 14, 1928, in Ripley, the daughter of Floyd L. and Belle Reardon Farnham.
She
is survived by three daughters: Lorna Parker of Mayville, Marlene Curry
of Parker, Pa., and Brenda Yankoski of Sherman; seven grandchildrren:
Brian Curry of Laurel, Md., Scott and Mark Curry, both of Parker,
Victoria Parker and Shannon Biekarck, both of Mayville and Roy
VanVolkenburg and Tad Yankoski, both of Sherman; four
great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Pratt of Lakewood.
She was
preceded in death by her husband, Norman A. Loveless, whom she married
June 29, 1946, and who died Aug. 8, 1993; infant twin sons: infant twin
grandchildren; a sister, Lura Meeder; and three brothers: Calvin,
Gerald and William Farnham.

PJ: Apr., 1962: Westfield - Mrs. Edith Hunt Marsh, 84, of 25 McClurg
St., died at 2:20 p.m. Friday (April 27, 1962) in her home. The widow
of William A. Marsh who died Dec. 6, 1959, she had been in failing
health for three years. Mrs. Marsh was born May 27, 1877, in
Dewittville. She was a member of the Westfield First Presbyterian
Church.
Survivors
are two daughters, Mrs. Irving Burleigh, Tavares, Fla., and Miss Marion
Marsh, Fredonia; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister,

FERNANDO C. OWEN
Maple
Springs, June 19. - Fernando C. Owen died Saturday evening about 7
o'clock at his home at Dewittville, at the age of 70 years. The cause
of death was heart failure. He leaves a wife, Thankful Brownell Owen;
two daughters, Mrs. Fred Smith of Denton and Miss Addie Owen of
Dewittville, one son, Charles Owen of California and numerous cousins
in and about Detroit. Mr. Owen spent the greater part of his life as a
farmer in the town of Ellery but in 1905 he purchased the Dewittville
house, since which time he has been a successful hotel man. He was at
one time a liveryman in Jamestown and for a time sailed on the Great
Lakes in the employ of his uncle, Ira Owen of Chicago, who operated a
line of lake steamers. The time of the funeral will be set on the
receipt of a reply from Charles Owen.

at 3 p.m. from the family home at Dewittville, Rev. G. W. Strothard,

floral tributes were laid on and about the casket, among them a large
wreath of white roses from Pittsburg. Mrs. Louise Cheney Ely sang two

Mrs. Florence Heath of Victoria was called to Dewittville Sunday by the death of her brother-in-law, F.C. Owen.
The
funeral of Fernando C. Owen was conducted from his family home Tuesday
afternoon at 3 o'clock, the Rev. Geo. W. Strothard of Bemus Point
officiating. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends and
many flowers. Mrs. Louese (sic) C. Ely sang two beautiful pieces. The
bearers were Aaron Mason, James Cheney, Norman Irwin and George Wood.
Interment was in Dewittville cemetery.

DEWITTVILLE -- Miss Addie Owen, 95, of this community died at 1:05 p.m.
Monday (March 6, 1972) in Dunkirk. She was born Nov. 18, 1877, in the
Town of Ellery, the daughter of Fernando and Thankful Brownell Owen.
She
was a member of the Dewittville United Methodist Church and Dewittville
Grange No. 480. On Jan. 13, 1964, Miss Owen was honored by receiving
the Golden Sheaf certificate issued by the National Grange in
recognition of 50 years of continuous membership.
Surviving are a
niece, Mrs. Percy Secor, Jamestown, and five nephews, Leland Owen,
Hartfield, Raymond Smith of New Mexico[Ray Smith of Mesa,Arizona],
Ernest Smith, Centralia, Fernando Smith, Sherman, and Daniel Smith,
Fredonia.

PJ: Mar., 1982: Dewittville: Gorman A, Parker, 75, of Dewittville, died
at 11 a.m. Friday, (March 5, 1982) at his home after an illness of
several months.
He
had been a self-employed carpenter. A lifelong resident, he was born
June 20, 1906, in Dewittville, the son of Clarence and Julia Coon
Parker. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the
Pacific.He is survived by a sister: Genevieve Engdahl of Dewittville.
Military services will be conducted by the Westfield VFW. Burial will
be in Dewittville Cemetery.


 

PARKER
Mayville...Clarence A. Parker, former Postmaster
of Dewittville for 28 years and well known general store proprietor
there, died suddenly at his home in that village last evening at 6:30,
aged 58 years. A physician was summoned when Mr. Parker was taken ill
but medical aid was unavailing. A cerebral hemorrhage is believed to
have been the cause of death. Mr.
Parker was born at Beech Hill and had been a lifelong resident of the
town of Chautauqua. He had resided in Dewittville for the past 35
years, and had conducted a general store there for many years. He
served as Postmaster for 28 years until about two years ago, when he
was succeeded by Arlie Wilson.Besides his wife, Mrs. Julia Parker, the
deceased is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Geneva Engdahl and Mrs.
Genevieve Engdahl, both of Dewittville; two sons, Gerald C. Parker,
Greenhurst and Gorman A. Parker, Dewittville; two grandchildren; one
sister, Mrs. Belle Link, Dewittville.

Born
Jan. 19, 1930 in the town of Ellicott, he is the son of the late
Linwood and Pearl Seekings Penhollow.He was a veteran of WW II and the
Korean Conflict, serving with the U.S. Army infantry division. He was
recipient of two Bronze Service Stars.
He is the father of Linda
Libengood, Irvin Penhollow Jr., Richard Penhollow, all of Jamestown;
Also survived by 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother of
Chester Penhollow of Jamestown, and the late Raymond and Leland
Penhollow and Elizabeth Kepler and Betty Sheffield.

She was born Jan. 20, 1922, in the town of Poland, a daughter of the late Leo and Hazel Wensley Carlton.

are three daughters, Janice Penhollow of Stockton, Bonnie Covert of
Forestville, and Donna Wilder of Falconer; two sons, Glenn Penhollow of
Ripley, and Harvey Penhollow of Sinclairville; 13 grandchildren, 12
great-grandchildren and a brother, Joseph Carlton of Jamestown. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Morris Cecil Penhollow, whom she
married June 29, 1940 and who died Oct. 27, 1982; and one son, Albert
Penhollow, who died July 11, 1954.

PJ: Dec., 1979 - Orsell G. Peterson, 72, formerly of Ithaca, died at 3
p.m. Thursday (Dec. 20, 1979) in Fenton Park Nursing Home. He was
auditing supervisor for the New York State Electric and Gas in Ithaca,
retiring in January 1972.
A
veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Corps from April
1942 through June 1945 in the European and Pacific Theaters of War. He
was born in Jamestown Aug. 24, 1907, a son of Gilbert A. and Marie
Adena Nelson Peterson. Surviving are a brother, Charles G. Peterson of
Sheridan; and a sister, Mariel P. Walsh of Maple Springs.

 


 

RUSS

Walter A. Russ, 86, of 34 Wesleyan St., died Sunday (Aug. 15, 2004) in
the Corry Manor Corry, Pa. He was born June 16, 1918, in Bemus Point,
the son of Allen and Lorena Seaburn Russ.

He was a graduate of Bemus Point School and a veteran of World War II,
serving in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. He had been employed by the
New York State Conservation Department for 36 years He is survived by
his wife, Ruth Gerber Russ, whom he married July 1, 1942, in
Sinclairville; two daughters: Sandra Judson and Mary Cole, both of
Jamestown; six grandchildren: William Judson and Faith and Eleanor
Cole, all of Jamestown, Jeremy Judson of West Seneca, Hope Cole of
Rochester, and Grace Cole of Burlington, N.C. 

He was preceded in death by three brothers: Howard and Stuart Russ and his twin brother, James Russ.

6/11/2006: June E. Schutt, 85, formerly of 5185 Maple Springs-Ellery
Road, Bemus Point, and 86 Falconer St., Jamestown, died at 3:14 p.m.
Friday, June 9, 2006, in Heritage Green Health Care Center. A native of
Mayville, she was born on June 15, 1920, daughter of George H and Ethel
Weise Parker.Surviving are a son, David L. (Barbara) Schutt of
Ashville; three daughters: Bonnie (Vernon) Davidson of Bemus Point,
Nancy (Robert) Johnson of Sherman, and Cheryl Cusimano of Jamestown; 11
grandchildren: 23 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Gail Spinks of
Sherman.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Clare E. Schutt, with whom she celebrated their 61st
anniversary June 8, 2000, and who died Jan. 10, 2001; and a brother,
Beverly G. Parker, Feb. 23, 1000. Burial will be in Dewittville
Cemetery.

Clare E. Schutt, 80, of 5185 Maple Spring Ellery Road, formerly of 86
Falconer St., died at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, in Westfield
Memorial Hospital.
A native of Jamestown, he was born July 12, 1920, the son of Leslie H. and Adele E. Scholin Schutt.
He
attended Mayville High School and was a former member of the Christian
Missionary Aliance Church in Jamestown. He was founder, owner and
operator of Schutt's Saw and Mower Service from 1960 to his retirement
in 1987 due to ill health. Earlier he had been employed by the former
Art Metal Inc.
He is survived by his wife, June E. Parker Schutt,
whom he married June 8, 1939; a son, David L. Schutt of Ashville; three
daughters: Bonnie Davidson of Bemus Point, Nancy L. Johnson of Sherman
and Cheryl E. Cusimano of Ashville; 11 grandchildren, : 20
great-grandchildren: and a sister, Dorothy VanAtter of Mayville. Burial
will be in the Dewittville Cemetery.

SCOFIELD,
SEELY--Born July 22, 1758. Died June 15, 1843, aged 84 years, 10 months
and 23 days. Grave in Dewittville Cemetery, town of Chautauqua. He was
the son of Sylvanus and Hannah Seely Scofield, of North Stamford, Conn.
He enlisted in the Continental army at the age of 18 years and served
six years and six months. He was a private in the Company of Captain
Henry Ten Eyck's Light Infantry, Second Connecticut Reg't commanded by
Col. Zebulon F. Butler; was also in Capt. Jonathan Whitney's Company,
of Col. Mead's 9th Connecticut Militia; also served in Webb's Reg't
under General Wooster, going to the latter's command after the battle
of White Plains. He was married to Hannah Crissey, who was born March
24, 1766, at Stamford, Conn. With his family he moved to Saratoga
County, N. Y., about 1795, remaining there until about 1800 when they
moved to Onondaga County. He is mentioned in the Pension List of 1840
as living in the town of Ellery, Chautauqua County, at the age of 82,
and residing with Haran Scofield.

Obituary: Sarah (Maxham) Smith, 1864
“On
Thursday last the wife of Mr. Daniel D. Smith, of Ellery, an old lady
some 60 years, in returning home from Westfield, was taken with an
apoplectic fit when near the residence of Mr. H.B. Case, just east of
Hartfield. She was removed to Mr. Case’s house, where she expired
Saturday evening [ July 16, 1864 ], having never rallied sufficiently
to become conscious. Her remains were removed to her house in Ellery
for burial. – Sentinel.”

Daniel Nathan Smith who was born Aug 20, 1838 Ellery and died Dec 31,
1912 in Stockton? This Daniel is buried in Dewittville Cemetery. He was
the son of Daniel D. & Sarah R. Maxham Smith. He married Jan 25
1864 Rhoda F. Russell who was born July 13, 1842 in Ellery and died
Sept 2, 1932 in Stockton. She is buried in Dewittville Cemetery. She
was the daughter of Jeremiah and Esther Hill Russell.
Their
children were Sarah E. Smith born Jan 11, 1865 Ellery and died Mar 2,
1922. She married Henry Young.....Frank W. Smith born Mar 25, 1868 in
Ellery. He married Myra L. ______. Frank & Myra had children Frank

Dewittville - Mrs. Florence Owen Smith, 71, died at her home here on
Saturday at 4:30 P.M. She is survived by four sons, Ray Smith of
Clymer, Ernest and Fernando Smith of Dewittville, and Daniel Smith of
Fredonia; a daughter, Mrs. Luvilla Shearman of Fredonia; a sister, Miss
Addie Owen of Dewittville; a brother, Charles Owen of Santa Monica,
Cal., 26 grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Rhoda Smith, 90 years old, died Friday evening at the home of her son
Fred Smith, at Pleasantville. Beside the son at whose home she lived,
she is survived by a son, Frank, Dewittville; five grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2
o'clock (standard time) at the home of her son in Pleasantville."

DEWITTVILLE - The funeral of Mrs. Rhoda Smith was held Sunday at the
home of her son, Fred Smith at Pleasantville. Rev. Albert Loucks of the
local church spoke words of comfort and cheer concerning the long,
useful life of four score years and ten. She is survived by two sons,
Frank of Dewittville and Fred at whose home she passed away.
Her
only daughter, Sarah, died some years ago. Her five grandsons and
nephew bore her (to) the last resting place in the local cemetery. Thus
has passed a woman of sterling worth, who as a thrifty pioneer and
loving mother did her life work thru-out (sic) the long years. The
floral offerings were many and bore mute testimony to the love and
esteem of her friends.

PJ: Aug., 1966: Dewittville - Alton L. Stratton, 73, of Dewittville,
died at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 10, 1966) in Westfield Memorial
Hospital. He was caretaker for 38 years at the Dewittville Cemetery
before his retirement.
Mr.
Stratton was born Nov. 16, 1892 at Portland, a son of Edwin and
Dauphine Newbury Stratton. He had been a resident of the area for 58
years.
He is survived by one brother, Lee Stratton of Dewittville.

Bemus Point, died Friday(Dec. 29, 1995) in Heritage Village Health
Center, Gerry. She was born May 27, 1901, in Gerry, the daughter of
Fred and Anna Johnson Carlson.She is survived by a daughter, Evelyn
Hulburt of Clarence, N.Y.; a son, David Strickland of Bemus Point; 12
grandchildren: 27 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Elnora Gage of
Gerry.She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert T. Strickland,
whom she marriedMarch 31, 1922, in Jamestown, and who died Feb. 10,
1988; a son, Howard Strickland, who died in 1975; three granddaughters:
Marcia Dickey, who died in 1950, LucindaStrickland, who died in 1954,
and Anita Yount, who died in 1989; a great-grandson, Seth Strickland,
who died in 1988; two sisters: her twin sister, Ruby Olson, and
FlorenceCarlson; and a brother, Arthur Carlson. Burial will be in

Sunday, April 25th, 1926 , on his farm in the Town of ELLERY, Chautauqua Co. NY,
S.
Dwight THUM departed this life at the age of 76 years. He left a wife,
a brother Everett THUM of Dewittville and a sister , Miss Alberta THUM
of Jamestown, He was buried in the Dewittville Cemetery.
He was born
in the town of Ellery, May 24th, 1850. His education was gained in the
district school of Dewittville and the Union schools of Ellington and
Mayville. He engaged in farming on the land that had been cleared by
his grandfather. He was progressive and is credited with having built
the first silo in Ellery. When Dewittville Grange was organized, he
became the first Master.
He was at times, Postmaster, Supervisor, ,
a searcher of titles for the County clerk, and spent his later years on
his farm. On July 21, 1875 he married Miss Lillias A. IRWIN of
Chautauqua, of 2 daughters born to them, one died in infancy and the
other at the age of 6.

in North Haven, Conn. the oldest of seven children. Came to Chautauqua
County April, 1810. Settled on lot 33, near Centralia. Bela Todd died
September 23, 1862 at the home of his son Ora at Pleasant Valley
(Kabob) at age 77 years. He is buried in Dewittville Cemetery.
He
married in 1807, sixteen year old Lucy Hemmingway. Lucy was born Dec.
14, 1791 in Dewittville and died May 6, 1856. Bela Todd and Lucy
Hemmingway Todd had sixteen children, ten boys and six girls.

Thursday at his home in Dewittville, following a year's illness.
Mr.
Tyler was born July 28, 1877 in Dewittville, the son of Franklin and
Louisa Pullman Tyler. He had been a resident of Dewittville six years,
returning here from Buffalo.
Surviving are his wife, Josephine Bliss Tyler, Dewittville, and a brother William Tyler, Dewittville.

WARNER KESBY INGERSON

PJ: Oct., 1996: Dunkirk: Clara E. Kesby Warner, 82, formerly of the
Hotel Jamestown Apartments, died at 11:29 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 1996,
in the Chautauqua County Home.
A
lifelong Jamestown area resident, she was born July 10, 1914, in the
town of Ellery, the daughter of Eugene and Gertrude Rhodes
Ingerson.Surviving are two daughters: Beverly Reinbold of Fillmore and
Carole Pegan of Bemus Point; a son, Harold Kesby of Deland, Fla.;
several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Matrion
Ingerson, and two sisters: Florence Murdock and Bernice Lipsey, all of
Bemus Point.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert
Kesby on July 4, 1961; her second husband, Agney Warner; a daughter,
Shirley Swanson on April 29, 1996, and two brothers: Merton and Glenn
Ingerson.

ISABELLE LESHER and JOSEPH COBB Mrs Nettie E. Wife of N. (Norman) O.
WATERMAN died at her home at 311 Pine St, Jamestown NY at 3 o'clock
Tuesday of pneumonia, after an illness of about a weeks duration, She
was 50 years of age. A brief prayer service will be held at the home at
1 Thursday and the funeral will be at 4 pm at Dewittville Internment ,
Dewittville 
Nov 10, 1903 O. M. GREENMAN and wife attended the
funeral of Mrs N (Norman) O WATERMAN at Jamestown last Thursday. Mrs.
WATERMAN died of pneumonia instead of diptheria as reported last week.

Dr. Waterman: " Martin R (twin), b. 10 May 1875;
d.
at Rochester N.Y.Apr 6, 1934; Married Edith Cobb, who d. Sept. 1936. At
one time he was Principal of the Norman School at Champlain, N.Y. Later
he entered the Syracuse Medical College,and graduated (M.D.) For many
years he
practiced medicine in Brockport and Rochester, N.Y. He
enlisted in the Medical Corps in the World War, but was not called. No
children, but an adopted daughter, Dorothy. His twin sister was Mattie
E. He had another sister, Ruth Ellen Waterman

WARREN
- Funeral services for Mrs. Mary E. Wiggins, 88,(nee SPRING ) of the
Watson Memorial Home, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the
Lutz-VerMilyea Funeral Home.
The Rev. Richard H. Baker will
officiate. Burial will be in Dewittville Cemetery. Mrs. Wiggins, the
widow of Frank L. Wiggins, died at 2 a.m. Friday (April 4, 1969) at
Warren General Hospital where she had been a resident since 1955 at the
Watson Home.
She was born in Dewittville, (Chautauqua County) N.Y.,
July 21, 1888. Mrs. Wiggins was a graduate of Mt. Holyoke College,
South Hadley, Mass. She belonged to the Trinity Memorial Episcopal
Church and the General Joseph Warren Chapter of the Daughters of the
American Revolution.
Her son, Robert H. Wiggins, Erie; a grandson and a grand-daughter and four great grandchildren, survive.

Elizabeth A. Wilson of Dewittville, age 93, died on Friday, July 21,
2006, days before celebrating her 94th birthday, at home. She was born
July 29, 1912 in Lamberton, the daughter of the late Norman and Helen
Wright Peters. She is survived by two sons: Rexford C. Wilson of
Mayville and Leo S. (Mary) Wilson of Dewittville; ten grandchildren:
and nine great- grandchildren Besides her parents, she was preceded in
death by her husband, Ralph Courtney Wilson, whom she married July 15,
1933 in Dewittville and who died Sept. 18, 1978. Also her sister,
Marjorie Peters Heath, two brothers: Glenn Peters and Gene Peters, and
a daughter -in-law, Marilyn Thayer Wilson. burial in Dewittville

P.J. Aug. 7, 1945: Dewittville: A former rural delivery mail carrier
operating out of Dewittville for 27 years and widely known through this
region, Levi S. Winchester, 85, died at his home here Monday morning.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Winchester; a son, Gerald H.
Winchester of Maple Springs; a daughter, Mrs. Alan G. Leet of Point
Chautauqua; five grandchildren, Capt. Carlton A. Winchester, U.S. Army,
Panama Canal Zone; Lt. A. Richard Winchester, U.S. Army, Boca Ration,
Fla.; Merwin A. Leet, Doris Ann Leet and Myron G. Leet of Point
Chautauqua, and a brother, Leroy E. Winchester of Fredonia.
Born
at Stockton on April 30, 1860, he made his home there, engaged in
farming, until 1914, when he continued farming operations near here.
Later he became a rural delivery mail carrier.

Mary Higgs Winchester died April 1948 at her home in Dewittville, age
84. She is buried in the Dewittville Cemetery. Mary had brothers: Fred
Higgs of Stockton; Will Higgs of Charlotte Center and a brother-in-law
Leroy E. Winchester. Their daughter Eva Winchester Leet was the wife of
Alan G. Leet of Point Chautauqua.

YOUNG, SAMUEL--Born in 1762 at Middletown, Conn. Died July 17, 1848.
Grave in Dewittville Cemetery, town of Chautauqua. No record of his
service in the Revolutionary war. Married Elizabeth Hubbard Brainard,
at Old Haddam, Conn., in 1786. Moved to Vermont in 1793 and to
Chautauqua County, N. Y., in 1816, settling on lot 54 in the town of
Ellery. They had four sons, Samuel, Jr., David, Zenas and Enoch, and a
daughter, Phoebe Hubbard. He was locally known as a Revolutionary
soldier.

I could not find ANY War, pension, burial or DAR records for Samuel.

added note Samuel Young Sr. known locally as a Revolutionary War
soldier on the basis of traditionary evidence, always included in the
roster of the county soldiers of the Revolution. He marched with a
company of men from the town of Windham, Conn. for the relief of Boston
at the time of the Lexington alarm in Apr. 1775. He acted as Sergeant
of the Co. and was credited with four days active service. Beyond this
one brief tour of duty with Conn. Militia, nothing further is known
about his military career.
