Arrangement made by the Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville. Veteran of World War II. PJ: 9/28/1992: Mrs. Persons was a graduate of Dunkirk High School and Fredonia Normal School. She graduated from nursing training in Bay City, Mich., in 1958. She and her husband operated Morey’s Inn and the Witch Kitch Inn, Sinclairville. After leaving the area, she was employed for many years as a private duty nurse in the Jacksonville area until her retirement in 1982. She was a member of the Prince of Peace R. C. Church, Jacksonville, past president of the LPN Nursing Association, Jacksonville and a past member of St. John the Evangelist R. C. Church, Sinclairville and the Sylvia Chapter 476, Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Leo and Aleck Adams; and two sisters, Mary Mescall Allenson and Dorothy Edwards.

Edwards, 75, of 369 Howard Ave., West Ellicott, died Friday (July 13, 1984) in Jamestown General Hospital. She was born April 8, 1909 in Dunkirk, a daughter of Marcy E. and Mabel Luce Adams. A Jamestown resident the past 11 years, she was previously a waitress in the employees dining room of the Prudential Insurance Co. office in Jacksonville, Fla. Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Ralph C. Edwards; two sisters: Mary Allenson of Jamestown and Berdena Persons of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother Aleck W. Adams of Bemus Point. She was preceded in death by a brother, Leo Adams in 1980. The funeral was at 2 p.m. today in Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville. The Rev. Stephen J. Parelli of Sinclairville First Baptist Church, officiated. Burial was in Red Bird Cemetery.

Anderson a 1951 graduate of Jamestown High School and was employed by Oakdale Dairy, Walgrens Seed Store and Busti Feed Mill. He retired from PRW in 1984, after being employed as a tool and die maker for 27 years. During the Korean Conflict he served as a sergeant with the military police. He was a member of American Association of Retired Persons, Chautauqua County Farm Bureau, Jamestown Pet Fanciers Club and Antique Equipment Association of Chautauqua County. He had served as a 4-H leader and a volunteer at WCA Hospital. He has sisters, Virginia Carlson of Lakewood, Marge Anderson of Buffalo, Patricia Ostrom of Busti, Nancy Anderson of Jamestown, Betty Anderson of New York City, and Gloria Morrison of Tidioute, Pa. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gordon Anderson, who died Jan. 1986. Grandchildren in 1988 included: Daniel S., Brian M., Richard N. and Amie Jo Anderson, of Sinclairville, step-grandchildren: Chrystal and David Schoeder, both of Sinclairville.

Becker, Arnold. b. Mar. 31, 1916 Frewsburg, NY. d. Mar. 21, 1967 as a result of a one-car accident near the Kabob Road. Age 50. s/o Joseph & Eleanor (Shaw) Becker. md. Sept. 5, 1936 Salamanca First Methodist Church - Doris G. Fuller Weiser. PJ: 3/21/1967: A 50-year-old Chautauqua County Highway Dept. snowplow operator was fatally injured following a one-car accident at 5:25 p.m. yesterday on Route 70 near the Kabob Road. Deputy Sheriff Ronald B. Hess said Arnold A. Becker, 50, R.D. 1,, Sinclairville, died in the WCA hospital, Jamestown, at 7:15 p.m. He was the fifth county highway victim this year to date compared with two as of Feb. 26, 1966. Mr. Becker had been employed for the past 16 years with the Chautauqua County Highway Dept. as a motor equipment operator, and had lived at R.D. Sinclairville for 26 years. Mr. Becker was born March 31, 1916, in Frewsburg, the son of Joseph and Eleanor Shaw Becker. He married the former Doris Wiser in the Salamanca First Methodist Church on Sept. 5, 1936. They marked their silver wedding anniversary in 1961. Besides his wife, Mr. Becker is survived by three sons, Arnold A. Becker Jr., Columbus, Ohio; Dennis A. Becker, Sinclairville, and Airman 1c Harry R. Becker, Presque Isle, Me.; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Faye Brandquist, Sinclairville; Mrs. Laura Goodwill, Jamestown; and Mrs. Gertrude Gens, Cassadaga; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Jordan funeral Home. The Rev. James E. Larkin of the Stockton Community Church, officiating. Burial will be in Red Bird Cemeterh, near South Stockton. PJ: 3/?/1967: Bearers at the funeral of Arnold A Becker were: Robert Little, Donald Joy, Bert Torrey, Loyd Barber, Carlyle Tilyou and Howard Derby. The Dunkirk Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 2447 conducted a memorial serivce at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A large group of Chautauqua County Highway Department employes attended the funeral services. .

He was born May 12, 1885, in West Ellery to Edward and Mary Wagner Briggs and had been a resident of Westfield 35 years. He worked as a painter. Mr. Briggs was a member of Westfield United Methodist Church; Westfield Fire Department; and Moose Lodge 118. Surviving are his wife, the former Carrie Teff, whom he married Nov. 26, 1906; a son, Lauros Briggs of Jamestown; a daughter, Mrs. Helen Wetsel of Westfield; four granddaughters, Mrs. Deloros Sampson of Greenhurst, Mrs. Patricia Trojillo of Jamestown, Mrs. Betty Russo of Ohio, and Mrs. Jennie Wolcott of Brocton; two grandsons, Larry Briggs of West Ellicott, and Michael Briggs of Jamestown; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Barber Funeral Home. The Rev. Douglas H. Garwood of the Brocton United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Red Bird Cemetery, South Stockton. .

Briggs, Carrie (Tefft). b. Sept. 26, 1885 Ellery, NY. d. July 3, 1975 Doctor’s Hospital, Erie, Pa. after a short illness. Age 89. d/o Lewis & Margaret (Smith) Tefft. w/o Merlin "Merl" Wagner Briggs. PJ: 7/?/1975: Mrs. Carrie T. Briggs, 89, of 210 N. Portage St., Westfield, died Thursday (July 3, 1975) in Doctors Hospital, Erie, Pa., after a short illness. She was the widow of Merl W. Briggs, who died Feb. 24 of this year. Mr. and Mrs. Briggs were married Nov. 26, 1906. She was born Sept. 26, 1885, in Ellery, the daughter of Lewis and Margaret Tefft, and resided in Westfield 35 years. In former years she had worked in the Coffee Shop of the former Hotel Samuels in Jamestown. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. Surviving are a son, Lauros Briggs of Jamestown; a daughter, Mrs. Helen Wetsel of Westfield; four granddaughters, Mrs. Deloros Sampson of Greenhurst, Mrs. Patricia Trujillo of Jamestown, Mrs. Betty Russo of Ohio, and Mrs. Jelnnie Wolcott of Brocton; two grandsons, Larry Briggs of West Ellicott, and Michael Briggs of Jamestown; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Barber Funeral Home. The Rev. Douglas H. Garwood will officiate. Burial will be in Red Bird Cemetery, South Stockton.

Brunson, Abel. b. Mar. 25, 1786 Green River, Saratoga, NY. d. Sept. 30, 1861 on his farm in South Stockton, NY. Age 75/6/5. s/o Barnabas & Charity (Huggaboom) Brunson. md. Jan. 15, 1809 Bridgewater, NY - Sarah Jane "Sally" Love. Abel was five years old when his mother died. When he was 9 he went to live with the family of Abner Ives. This was around the same time that Abel’s father Barnabas Brunson was immigrating to Canada. Abel had been 22 when he married 17 year old Sally Love. Mr. and Mrs. Brunson came to Chautauqua County with his father-in-law, John Love, along with their first two children, Horace and Huldah after a six week sleigh journey. Two cows tied behind the sleigh had furnished the family with milk and butter; the butter was churned by the motion of the sleigh. Evertually, Abel purchased 120 acres in the wilderness where South Stockton now is. Mr. Brunson used to remark that for a number of years after he began work on his farm, he pilied an axe with such unremitting stroke that he knew nothing of Sunday, nor hardly the day of the month. He was owing for his farm, and his hands and economy must pay for it, and support a fast growing family. As often as he got five dollars he would go on foot to the land office in Mayville and make a payment. On the 10th of January, 1831, he made his last payment and received his deed from the hand of William Peacock. To accomplish this he had labored twenty years, when the original debt was but $300, having articled the land at $2.50 per acre. Mr. Brunson was one in a hundred who was able to pay for his land according to contract. He with his oxen worked on the first dam at the "Rapids" (Jamestown) in 1811 and in building of the first bridge across the Cassadaga Creek, near the resident of William Barrows later the Red Bird tavern in June 1811. His milling was done at Kennedy’s Mill, on the Conewango Creek (now Kennedy). There was no road for full half the way, but with the grist slung across the yoke of the oxen, they proceeded over the logs and around the tops, keeping the direction by "blazed" trees, returning the following day, to be greeted with love and joy by the wife and children in the log cabin in the wilderness. In 1824, Mr. Brunson built what was for that day a commodious frame house about forty rods north of his log cabin; and opened a tavern. He continued in that business until 1838, when he took down his sign, and built a sawmill on the brook before mentioned. The tavern had not affected his temperate habits, but the sawmill, like all of its kind on dry brooks, proved a failure. Mr. Brunson died on his old farm September 30, 1861, having resided there a little over fifty years. His wife died on the same place December 25, 1867. Mr. Brunson was a kind man, remarkable for his attention to the sick and afflicted in his neighborhood.

She was a former resident of the Jamestown area and had formerly been employed at Truck Lite Co. of Falconer. Surviving are three sons, Floyd R. Carpenter Jr. of Brocton, James A. Carpenter of Portland, and David A. Carpenter of Fredonia; a brother, William Davison of California; a sister, Emma Lee Cusimano of Jamestown; and nine grandchildren. Her husband, Floyd R. Carpenter, died in 1974. She was also preceded in death by a son, Wayne Carpenter; and a brother, Ludwell Davison. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Morse Funeral Home, Brocton. The Rev. Larry Morrison will officiate. Burial will be in Red Bird Cemetery, Ellery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. today and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Ray Alton Carpenter worked for and boarded with Frank and Lana Persons for a time on Pickard Street. Also, he worked at the Pickard Hotel, Bemus Point, as a boy. In 1925, Ray worked for a construction company in Falconer, where the truck he was driving lost its brakes and he backed into a gravel pit and broke arm and a leg, and was seriously hurt. He spent some time in a Buffalo Hospital. One leg was permanently damaged and he was put on compensation. He walked with crutches or a cane for the rest of his life. Despite all of this, he usually was ready with a joke for anyone. At time of the accident he resided at Levant where he and his wife, Helen, owned two small farms. In 1931, he bought a 117 acre farm on Joslyn-Fenner Road, Town of Stockton, where his father George (who had resided with son, Ray, most of his life) and Ray’s sons, Geroge (who had just got out of the U.S. Army, after being in Hawaii) and Floyd "Spike", two daughters, Anna and Betty, moved to reside here until 1939, when he sold the farm and removed back to Levant, for a time. Later both places were sold there, and he resided with daughter, Anna and family for a number of years. He was with them at Roscoe, N. Y. when he became very ill, and wanted to be brought up to his son’s at Brocton, N. Y. as he felt that he would die soon. He died of cancer about one month later in Westfield Hospital. Ray was six feet tall, handsome man, blue eyes and dark hair, big frame, but not heavy.

Enlisted in American army at Southbury, Conn. in June, 1776 in Revolutionary War. Served as private in company of Capt. Rogers, Col. Gay’s Reg’t. Re-enlisted in Dec., 1776, again in 1777, 1778, 1779, 1780 and in 1781, serving under Captains David Hinman, Curtis and Johnson and Cols. Hinman and Preston, Connecticut Militia. The last six months of his service he was teamster. He applied for pension Feb. 13, 1834, while a resident of Ellery, Chautauqua County, NY. Pension was granted. He is also mentioned in the Pension List of 1840. His first six month’s service in the army was as substitute for his brother Andrew. Captain David Hinman, in whose Company he was attached, was his grandfather. The wife of John Coe, Lois, was granted a pension April 18, 1848, at which time she was residing in the Town of Ellery.

Besides Mrs. Sylvester, Mrs. Crandall is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Mertis Shutt of Jamestown and Mrs. Nellie Pickard of South Stockton, and nine grandchildren. Mrs. Crandall was born in Lyons and moved to Chautauqua County when 7 years old. She was a member of Centralia Grange, All Saints’ Guild of Sinclairville and the Ladies’ Aid Society of Centralia. The funeral will be held at the home of Mrs. Sylvester at 2 o’clock. Burial will be in Red Bird Cemetery.

PJ: 5/14/2000: Sinclairville: Clayton C. Cross, Age 88, of Crane Street, Jamestown, formerly of Towerville Road, Sinclairville, died Friday, May 12, 2000, in WCA Hospital. He was born Aug. 25, 1911, in Cassadaga, the son of Allen and Alta Halstead Cross. A county resident most of his life, he attended Sinclairville Schools. He was employed from 1827 to 1943 by Chautauqua County. He was then employed as a grinder at Marlin Rockwell in Jamestown for 10 years, the former Blackstone of Jamestown and Hughes Aircraft in Tuscon, Ariz. He then was employed by Ring Punch and Die of Jamestown for 15 years, retiring in 1976. He attended the Gerry Free Methodist Church. Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Marie E. Nieder Cross, whom he married Aug. 3, 1935; a daughter: Irene Higgs of Jamestown; six grandchildren: Robert Cross, Brian Cross and Steven Cross, all of Phoenix, Jeff Lawson of Batavia, Penny Dracup of Jamestown and Todd Lawson of Gerry; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Allen Cross; a brother, Clifford Cross; and a sister, Marie Niles. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville, with the Rev. H. Robert Mitchell, pastor of Gerry Free Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Red Bird Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to the Sinclairville 76ers.

She was born July 9, 1918, in Dunkirk, the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Bates Nieder. A Chautauqua County resident all her life, she attended Dunkirk schools. She is survived by her daughter, Irene Higgs of Jamestown, six grandchildren: Robert Cross of Fort Mills, S.C., Brian and Steven Cross, both of Phoenix, Ariz., Jeff Lawson of Batavia, Penny Field of Jamestown, and Todd Lawson of Gerry; four great-grandchildren; two sisters: Ruth O’Brien of Ashville and Frances Brown of Tucson, Ariz.; and three brothers: Charles "Bud" Nieder of Falconer, Paul Nieder of Jamestown and William Nieder of Jamestown. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Clayton C. Cross, whom she married Aug. 3, 1935, and who died May 12, 2000; a son, Gerald Cross on July 25, 1991; and two brothers: Gordon Nieder on Nov. 8, 1995, and Donald Nieder on July 22, 1997. Burial will be in Red Bird Cemetery, Ellery.
