CLELAND, JOHN--Born in 1758. Died at Charlotte, Chautauqua County, N. Y.,
February 16, 1827. Grave in Pickett Cemetery, town of Charlotte. He enlisted
Feb., 1778, in Col. Williss' Reg't, Conn. troops, serving two and one half
years. His wife, Thankful Eaton, survived him, and was allowed a pension. In
March, 1811, accompanied by their sons, Nathan and Oliver, Mr. and Mrs.
Cleland settled in the town of Charlotte where another son, John, Jr., had
settled the previous year

Shapcott. She was a survivor of the London Blitz during World War II and, as
a young woman, served as a watch person from the rooftops in England to
report buildings that had been hit during bombing raids to the local fire
departments in England. She was a USO volunteer. A resident of Chautauqua
County since 1946, she was a 1972 graduate of and class president of WCA
School of Nursing. She was employed by the Chautauqua County Home as a
licensed practical nurse, retiring in 1987
