Family Album

The following pictures have been gathered by the students of Cleveland Hill High School's 1997 Advanced Placement History Class.

The Keough Family

Members of the Keough family. We suspect that the members of this
picture are(from left to right): Jim Keough, Sonel Ames, Patrick Townsell,
and Mary Fall Keough.

This is James Keough and his horses, Ned and Prince.

The above photo is of the school house that was located in the New Ireland Settlement. It was built in the mid19th century.  The children were taught up until the 8th grade. At one time, up to 60 students attended.  They were taught reading, writing, math and spelling.  The children in the picture are: Joe McCarthy, Mildred Marsh, Elmer Walker, David Watters, Fred Duchene, Richard Duchene, George Wexel, Eva Walker, Jim Keough, Rene Watters, Thelma Heingbaugh, Ann Hogan, Raymond Marsh and George Walker. Jim Keough, at the age of 9, in addition to being a student also became the janitor for three years.  In 1918, the school was closed because there were no teachers to keep it in session.

School Photo with Hogans

This is the school which existed on France Brook Road in what is now Allegany State Park.  We believe the picture was taken circa 1910.  The two teachers seen at the extreme right and left of the picture are Mary Hogan (rgt.) and Anna Hogan (lft.).  Mary taught at the France Brook school while Anna was the teacher in the New Ireland School.

This is a picture of Anne Kelly O'Laughlin, the wife of John O'Laughlin, both were original settlers of New Ireland.  The other people are Patrick O'Laughlin to the left of the photo and Leroy O'Laughlin to the right.  The baby in Leroy 's arms is Pauline, his daughter.

JILLIAN AND PAULINE This is Jillian Cherre, one of the historians working on the New Ireland Project and to her right is Ms.Pauline Hergenrother, the baby in the picture above .  Pauline attended the presentation made to the Allegany State Park Historical Society.  She informed us that the man holding her in the previous picture is her father, Leroy O'Laughlin and the man to the left is her grandfather, Patrick O'Laughlin.  It was a pleasure to meet a descendent of the original New Ireland families.

letter from descendent of the O'Laughlinsj

This is a letter we received from Pauline Hergenrother, who lives in Smethport, Pennsylvania. She is the grandaughter of John O'Laughlin, an original founder of New Ireland. She explains in this letter that she is the child in the photo. On the left is Patrick, her grandfather, and the man on the right is Patrick's son, Leroy who is Pauline's father. I located Pauline through another descendent, John Burroughs.

The men in this photo are Dan McCarty (lft) and Pat Townsell.  Dan McCarty was an original settler in New Ireland. He was born in 1853, estimating his age in the photo we believe it was taken between 1910 and 1920.

This picture shows three of the McCarty family members and Bridget Townsell O'Connell.  To the left is Martin McCarthy, seated next to him is Bridget Townsell O'Connell, Sadie McCarthy and to the extreme right is Dan McCarthy.

This is also Bridget Townsell O'Connell at an earlier time in her life.

This photo is of Bridget, Patrick(rgt), and James Townsell taken in1885.  The bottom of the photo indicates it was taken in the Frank Robbins Studio in Bradford, Pa.
