In 1860, John Cory, at the age 50, came to America from Ennistymon, County Clare, Ireland with his wife Johannah, who was 41, and their 20 year old daughter Catherine, born 15 September 1848. After his wife Johannah died, John married Elizabeth McCarty who he met in New Ireland. They exchanged vows in 1865. Soon after, his daughter Catherine married her step-mother's brother, Martin McCarthy. This may seem strange now but it was a common occurence at that time in such a small community.

New Ireland was located in Carrollton, New York. New Ireland is no longer in existence, but remnants of the houses and buildings are still visible.

In 1865, John's cousins Andrew and Patrick, immigrated to the United States and joined him in New Ireland. This was and still is a common practice among immigrants. Like John's family, his cousins also resided in New Ireland for a short period of time. Andrew's first wife died before the journey but his daughter Bridget was able to join him in western New York State. Patrick's wife Margaret, and their 3 children: Mary, Margaret and Michael also made the journey. Andrew and his daughter both married into the Murphy family (the Murphy's are one of the original families to settle in Limestone). Patrick and Andrew were laborers on John's farm. They raised a few dairy cows, poultry and grew enough crops to support the family.

The last known record I have of the Cory family in Carrollton is (circa) 1873.

In the many references that I have observed, the name Cory is spelled several ways: Cory, Corey, Cary, Carey, Carrey or even Karl. Genealogists we have worked with informed us that often nativist census takers didn't know how the foreign names were spelled, or couldn't understand the Irish brogue and wrote down what they phonetically thought they heard.

As far as I can tell, the Cory family moved out of New Ireland, as no record of the Cory family was found either in St. Patrick's cemetery or St. Patrick's Church in Limestone.

When and why did the Cory Family leave New Ireland?
According to Mrs. Betty Thrush, our Limestone/St. Patrick's connection, there is no record of any Cory in the church. If all the inhabitants of New Ireland belonged to St. Patrick's why didn't the Cory's?
There was a little girl by the name of Eliza Cory in the 1870 census. I know she was a related to the Cory's but I am curious to where her parents were? They were not listed with her in the census records.
On October 30, 1863 James Cory (one of the twins) deserted from the army in Jamaica, NY. Where did he go from there? That was the last known record I have of him.
In 1870, there was a record of the a James Cory family I am not really sure how they are related. James emigrated from Ireland and settled in the Limestone/New Ireland area.
In 1880, there was a Henry Cory who was boarding with the Benjamin Coates family. He was 21 years old, and his parents were from Ireland. How was he related to the family?

Patricia Hackett Nicola answered one of my questions as to where part of the Cory family moved to. Alice J. Murphy, the daughter of Bridget (nee Cory) and Michael Murphy moved to Sheldon, N.Y. Where she later married Sylvester Schwab. Alice and Sylvester were the grandparents of Patricia. Alice died of pernicious anemia shortly after Patricia mother was born in 1920.
