TOWN OF ALEXANDRIA

ICING ON THE ST. LAWRENCE RIVER

Notice the hay on the ice to give the men traction. Hay was more plentiful than the sawdust, which they might use instead. Ashes, since nearly every one burned wood, might make the ice messy, and this ice was used to chill food. Here John Taylor is just about to turn and go back to the ice hole for another cake, as his partner has already done. A pair of tongs lays on the ice, behind the truck. The two dogs, keeping their masters company as good dogs should, were Taylors' Laddie, in front, followed by the Wagoners' Mutz.
