TOWN OF ALEXANDRIA

ICING ON THE ST. LAWRENCE RIVER

Here John Taylor and an unseen man have used their pike poles to push a cake of ice up the slide to Evard Wagoner, on the truck, who is arranging the load to get the maximum number of cakes on the truck. By this time, horses have given way to motorized equipment. It took a minimum of four men to make up a gang, and more made the work go faster. One man was on the truck, loading; two men got the ice up on to the truck, and another man kept busy packing the ice carefully in sawdust in the ice house. The ice then would last all summer in those days before refrigeration had reached the common household. The blade of John's ice saw can be seen at the bottom right.
